Bone markings are the patterns on the bone surface that provide the attachment sites, joints and openings. Bone markings include projections (Processes) that are the markings that grow out from the bone and the depressions, which form cavities and openings in the bone.
Condyle refers to a round bump or projection at the end of many bones. These act as a site for attachment to another bone so as to form a joint. For example, present in the femur, knee, tibia, humerus, elbow joint, mandible, and occipital bone.
Crest refers to moderately raised, but prominent surface on a bone. They tend to form a ridge or a border, which acts as sites form the attachment of muscles and connective tissues. For example, the iliac crest present in the iliac bone.
Fissures are a long opening for the blood vessels and nerves. For example, Tympanomastoid fissure mainly segregates the temporal bone ‘s tympanic portion from the mastoid portion; it provides a site for the auricular branch of the Vagus nerve.
The foramen is a round opening in the bone that provides space for the muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, and ligaments so that they can connect one part of the body with another. For example, vertebral foramina in the spine and Foramen magnum of occipital bone in the skull.
Head of a bone is the rounded projection at the proximal end of the bone that provides the attachment site for a joint between two bones. For example, Head of the femur bone present at the proximal end.
Meatus refers to a tube-like channel that forms through the bone. It’s a natural body opening. For example, the external auditory meatus in the temporal bone that forms the portion of the skull behind the ear or the urinary meatus that forms the opening of the urethra.
Ramus refers to the curved surface of a bone. It’s a small branchlike structure. For example, the inferior pubic ramus as well as the superior pubic ramus present in the lower region of the pelvis bone.
The spine is a sharp, slender and bony projection present at the back of each vertebra. It is also known as spinous processes. It is similar to a crest, but is much more raised. These provide a site for the attachment of muscle and connective tissues. For example, the spinous processes of the vertebra.
