10 Great Resources for Young Writers

A fun fact: young writers at the Centauri Arts Academy have been published in many of these places, and have also been short-listed for several of these awards! Writing Summer Camps for Youth and Teens

SUMMER WRITING CAMPS IN TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA

CREATIVE WRITING CAMPS IN TORONTO AND ON-LINE

A specialty Creative Writing summer camp is a great way to grow your skills as a writer, while enjoying the company of other young people who love to write as much as you. Creative Writing campers try their hand at different genres as they participate in writing challenges, in the company of published authors and other young people equally passionate about words. Writing workshops take place outside, under the trees or by the side of a river, and in a specially designed Writer's Workshop Room, so this feels nothing like school! Lively discussions, readings and critiquing sessions encourage young writers to articulate what makes a great read, whether fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Campers are encouraged to experiment with genres they may not have tried before, but each participant is welcome to bring along works in progress, for the purpose of feedback. Creative Writing summer camp is all about the freedom to express yourself, in an atmosphere of encouragement and inspiration... but along the way, you can also expect to learn how to edit your work, and where to go to see it published. Centauri Summer Writing Camp is located in Bloor West Village, Toronto Canada and has been offering Creative Writing Summer Camps for children and teens since 1994. Instructors are published poets, playwrights, screenplay writers and authors from Toronto and Montreal, all with extensive previous teaching experience. A range of programs are offered each summer for ages 11-18. Centauri offers a range of arts programs alongside creative writing, including film, music and theatre... so collaborations are always possible. Write a short movie and see your work come alive on screen. Create a monologue for performance, and workshop it in rehearsal. Work with a musician to creative lyrics for an original song... the possibilities are endless. While some campers take Centauri’s creative writing programs for interest only, others have gone on to take writing courses in university, and to build careers for themselves as writers.

What do children learn in writing camps?

You’ll find different kinds of writing featured in camps above. In creative writing camps , kids venture into the world of fiction and nonfiction writing. They learn about literary devices, the narrative structure, and characterization.

Academic writing courses focus on writing essays of all styles, including argumentative, expository, or persuasive essays. Some camps even specialize in test preparation , such as the SATs or the OSSLT. Here, kids adopt test-taking strategies and learn to write long and short-answer test questions within a certain time.

Both creative and academic writing camps teach students about grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and enhance children’s vocabulary in the process. Children learn to brainstorm, research, draft, and edit their work with every piece they write. Over time, kids discover a personalized writing process that works for them, which makes writing essays, stories, and tests simpler.

Prices for writing camps start at $100, though some can rise to $700 or even $1,000+.

About advanced writing camps

At advanced writing camps, children learn to write for ‘traditional’ writing styles such as essays or short stories, as well as niche styles including journalistic articles, poetry, or even emails. Both collaboration and constructive criticism are encouraged. In writing workshops, children share creative or academic written pieces with their peers to receive feedback and edit their writing.

Camps also offer kids the opportunity to submit their writing to contests and competitions, where  they gain exposure in the professional world of writing. Some programs above require previous writing experience or a certain level of writing before enrollment.

What are the benefits of writing camp?

  • Improved academic performance . Writing camps give students the skills necessary to excel in school subjects in which essays and written assignments are part of coursework.
  • Balance mechanics and stylization . As kids perfect the mechanics of writing (spelling, parts of speech, punctuation, structure, etc.), they develop their personal writing style. They uncover their own voice and find what makes their writing stand out from others.
  • Self-discipline. Most writing camps assign homework outside of camp time, encouraging students to maintain a disciplined writing routine, even when they’re off school.
  • Small course sizes help children receive personalized feedback from their teachers and peers to improve specific writing skills.
  • Critical thinking skills . With writing practice, children learn to read better, improving their comprehension skills and critical thinking.

The Young Authors Collective, or YAC, is a group of talented, word-obsessed high school writers dedicated to experimenting with new creative forms, collaborating with other arts organizations, and writing a ton. We meet once a week at Lighthouse to generate new pieces, give friendly feedback, and work towards publication.

Support Young Writers

Our Future Scribes Depend on Your Support. Nearly all of the workshops and projects that will engage 2,300 students this year are free to attend, and for the sessions that do have tuition, such as summer writing camp, financial aid is available for any student who needs it. We want all young people who want to write to be able to do so and for them to be nurtured by the best instructors and mentors available. This only happens with the support of generous donors like you.

HIGH SCHOOL Grades 9-12 next school year

Session 1 June 26 – July 7 Session 2 July 10 – July 21

INTERMEDIATE Grades 7-9 next school year

Session 3 July 24-August 4 Session 4 August 7 – August 18

Students today are creating more text than any other generation in history, and for young writers who want to harness that flood of language to create art, Blue Lake’s Writing Camp is the ideal setting to pursue their discipline.

Young boy marking grammar on a dry erase board

Henry David Thoreau wrote that he “went to the woods because [he] wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life,” and to see if he “could not learn what it had to teach.” Blue Lake provides a peaceful, wooded setting that helps students tune out the distractions of daily life and tune into their own inner worlds. Unplugging from the glare of computer screens, Blue Lake Creative Writers use pencils and paper to write, which not only allows them to reap the well-documented benefits of writing by hand, but also allows them to be highly mobile and write in different scenic locations on our lakeshore campus.

The Creative Writing program is a place for writers both new and experienced. Creative Writing faculty provide individualized attention in small class sizes. Students write and attend classes daily in our classroom and frequently foray onto camp to seek inspiration for their writing by responding to dance, orchestra, band, vocal, and other exhibitions in writing. Collaboration between Creative Writing and other departments is rich, and students may have opportunities to practice ekphrastic writing with the Visual Art department or broadside production with the Printmaking department.

Through multiple drafts, every Creative Writing student works toward the creation of one or more polished pieces of writing to include in a bound anthology produced by Blue Lake faculty. These anthologies contain work from Creative Writing students in the session and are theirs to keep. This process-based approach helps students to engage deeply with revision as a form of “seeing again,” allows them to begin to envision their readers, and encourages deeper reflection about the use of white space, typographical and grammatical conventions, and more.

Creative Writing students can complete their instructional day and enrich their writing lives by choosing a  Minor , allowing them to experience another area of interest while at camp. Students also have the opportunity to attend Summer Arts Festival performances, as well as participate in recreation, camp activities, and attend arts-focused educational events in the evening.

All sessions conclude with a celebratory live reading designed to get students thinking about the expectations of audiences, hone their verbal delivery skills, and boost their confidence in their written work. Students read from their anthology piece and have the opportunity to debut a new piece for their audience as well. Families are welcome to attend these rich Final Sunday Readings.

Sessions 1 & 2: Genre Studies

Students in Session 1 or 2 will take courses in craft elements of poetry and prose. In addition to several hours of intensive workshops, students will also have the opportunity to read and discuss the work of living writers as viable craft models. Upon enrollment and subject to availability, students may have the opportunity to state a genre preference to serve as their major area of focus. Students can expect to partake in several hours of discussion-based class time followed by two or more hours of independent writing studio time per day.

Sessions 3 & 4: Cross-Genre Approaches

Students in Sessions 3 or 4 will take courses in multiple writing genres and focus on play and experimentation. These students make a deeper exploration of the sensory world in order to boost their grasp of image and detail, and engage in process-based techniques like erasure, musical accompaniment, and curated nature walks. Students will have several hours of class time focused on hands-on exercises punctuated by hour-long stretches of supervised independent work time per day.

[My Son] loved the time he spent this week on creating new projects. He woke up early and he looked forward to his day. I usually need to wake him up and force him to sign in for school. Thank you for organizing this Zoom camp class during this week! Melissa H.

About the Camp

How does Online Art Camp work?

  • Registered campers will sign on to a daily Zoom session to participate in daily online art activities.
  • Daily sessions will start promptly at 9:00 am and end at 12:00pm.
  • Each weekly camp will have its own individual Zoom link (Sent in the week prior to camp)

What will I be doing at camp?

  • Participants will create 1-2 new artworks each day using different techniques and mediums, such as drawing, painting, or mixed media work.

Do I need to purchase my own art supplies separately?

  • The Art Kit is a required one-time purchase. This means that once purchased, you only pay the camp fee for any additional weeks. For example: If you register for one week, you pay: $110 + $50 = $160. If you register for two weeks, you pay: $220 + $50 = $270.
  • This Art Kit contains specific non-toxic, quality supplies needed for every project: painting, drawing, collaging and sculpting. All paint and drawing supplies are full-size, art-store quality and will last well beyond camp.
  • Art Camp Kits will be available for pick-up at our studio location after registration. A delivery option is available in the GTA for an extra fee.

Do I need any special equipment to participate in Art Camp?

  • Since this is an online camp, participants will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone, with a working camera and microphone.
  • Participants will need to have the free Zoom app downloaded and ready to use before class begins.
  • Participants will need a dedicated space at home to work on art projects daily.
  • Participants are asked to have paper towels and water containers for painting ready for use

Online Art Camp Gallery: Once camp is over, campers will celebrate a fun week of artmaking and exploration with an online gallery of their work on our website.

The number of participants will be limited so that everyone can get individual attention. Parental supervision is of course welcome, but not necessary for our young campers to participate. All participants will be asked to respect art camp rules of behaviour throughout the duration of the camp, such as respectful interaction with everyone and keeping their camera on while in session.

Online sessions will be led by Rima Koleilat or Yasmine Barrage.

A FRUIT-ful Experience: Students Speak!

I learned the six most needed qualities of writing and I know these qualities will be SUPER helpful with writing in the future. It is an awesome camp!” Evelyn Kim, 11 ————– “It was fun! And I was able to get outside my shell!” Miranda Bustos, 13 – Middle School ————– “I love this camp. I liked all the fun exercises and how we paired up and met new people. I like that it’s really small so you don’t just feel like another kid. The snacks are great!” Sofia McDonald, 13 ————– “This camp has really made me a better writer, and has instilled in me very important values that I hadn’t had before, such as respect, trust, loyalty, and kindness.” Melissa Hua, 11 ————– I learned how to be more descriptive in my writing such as using all the senses and six qualities of writing with new vocabulary and how to use them. The collaborative poem was awesome.” Shinee Batsaikhan, 12 ————– I” learned how to “steal” words form poetry to expand my vocabulary. I loved looking at a piece of art and writing about it. The camp was perfect!” Hana Rudoff. 12 ————– “I learned that there is no good and bad writing. There are only words with energy. You always need the writing faith: you will always write what you need to write.” Cate Wang, 11 ————– “What I liked best were the fun exercises that helped us improve a certain writing skill.” Ava Elizabeth Jo, 13 ————– “I am in love with this camp!” Arianna Love, 13
I enjoyed writing different types of fiction and sharing important details with the group. It was fun discovering how each person had their ways of writing and I enjoyed hearing all of it. I feel like I’ve learned a lot of things the past week. From ways to improve your short stories to making poems out of fragments in free writing! As the school year starts, I’ll be sure to think back to the things I learned in camp. I’ve gotten so many ideas in my head, I don’t think it’ll be too hard to think of something to write about for a story. This experience was different from other experiences I’ve had because some of the things taught I’ve never done before. Such as the activity we did with cutting out fragments and arranging them into poems. Also the first thing we did, when we put all of our phrases together and made one poem. (I thought those were pretty fun) I loved meeting and gathering with the people there, and getting to know them. Overall, it was a fun and FRUIT-ful experience! NANCY LIU, will be a freshman at Lowell    8/2013
