I never thought it would happen to me.

I know — cliché, famous first words that so many of us use to preface these stories that are, sadly, all too common. But I truly never imagined myself being one of the 1 in 3 women who experience abuse by an intimate partner . It’s not because I’m naïve or think I’m better than anyone else. I just grew up with the picture-perfect model of a happy, functional marriage and nuclear family, so I assumed that the phrase, “you’re attracted to men like your father” would hold true for me too. Boy, was I very wrong.

How it all started

My story starts out the way many other domestic violence cases do — with non-physical abuse . When I was 15, I met my first boyfriend. Our puppy love was cute, but my adult therapy years revealed that he actually abused me psychologically and emotionally. He cheated on me any chance he got — whether that was in the stairwell after school, or on the train seat in front of me during a school trip — but he also always came running back to me on the few occasions that I tried to say “enough is enough.”

Could I have walked away instead of hoping each time was the last time? Absolutely. But I was a kid, and he was the first guy who’d ever pursued me and my first everything (first kiss and beyond). He didn’t say extremely mean things — I now know that any words that put me down or made me feel poorly about myself counted as “mean” — and he never placed his hands on me. If you took away all the drama, we were genuinely great friends. So I clearly didn’t yet have the mental maturity to fully understand the impact that these “he’s just being an asshole” moments of teenage heartbreak could have on my future romantic relationships.

I stayed with him, and kept sleeping with him, until I graduated high school and went away to college. I lost a ton of weight during that relationship because I felt I had to look “prettier and better” than all the other girls he was showing attention to; that set the stage for a lifetime of insecurity in all facets of life, not just appearance, and played a big part in why I put up with certain things in future relationships. I just never felt like enough.

A not-so-fresh start

Fast-forward through my college years. Most of them were spent having meaningless sex with more guys than I care to admit, because as I know now, my brain had become trained to think that my body was my worth. A few of those experiences were downright dangerous and more than unsettling, but I brushed them off as “no big deal.” That was my way of coping with something I was intrinsically uncomfortable with, and plus, dysfunctional “intimacy” was all I knew. In a way, the psychological and emotional abuse I’d endured led me to abuse myself, without realizing that’s what I was doing.

When I was 23, I finally met someone who seemed interested in both my brain and my body. At first things were exciting, fun, great! We laughed easily, had the best time doing nothing, and couldn’t keep our hands off each other. Then one night about a year in, the cycle started all over again — except this time, it quickly escalated.

First, I caught him cheating on me. There were a few months of him promising it would never happen again and me convincing myself that he meant it. I was used to this type of behavior, and almost expected it. But he didn’t mean all the “I’m sorry, I’ll change,” and things didn’t get better. He kept cheating (and stopped apologizing for it), and the verbal confrontations soon became physical ones.

A dangerous turn

I’ll never forget the first time he put his hands on me. I had asked him about a pair of women’s underwear I’d found next to his bed, when all of a sudden his hands were around my neck and my feet were dangling six inches above the ground. I froze, I didn’t even try to fight. I just waited for him to finish yelling and put me down, then I calmly said, “What the f--k is wrong with you,” and left his apartment — but I didn’t leave him . I had finger bruises for several days, and it hurt to turn my head for weeks.

The next time things turned physical, he threw me into a metal radiator — after which he gave me a pack of frozen chicken breasts to ice my back and side with (aww, chivalry), and helped me into the car because I was in so much pain. Those fractured ribs made it hurt to breathe for over a month, and to this day, I can still see myself crashing into that radiator.

Over the next couple years, he’d punch my thighs or shove me into things or lift me up by my neck anytime I pissed him off. I now realize that all the times he’d make me have sex with him when I wasn’t in the mood, all the sexually transmitted infections he passed to me, all the times he’d make me do sexual acts I wasn’t comfortable with and the countless sexual photos or videos he demanded (and then regularly threatened me with) counted as sexual abuse , too.

It wasn’t all physical

Often, emotional, psychological or verbal abuse precedes physical violence , but in my case, he began abusing me with his words after he’d already started with his hands. He constantly caused me to doubt certain scenarios, my feelings or things that I knew to be true — classic gaslighting and manipulation . He told me I was ugly, fat and my butt wasn’t big enough. I was boring, then the next second I was crazy and stupid and over-emotional. And how dare I wear mascara when I knew he didn’t like makeup?! All of those things (and many more) were the reason that he just had to cheat on me, then had to hurt me when I brought it up.

Now I know that I was “accepting” that bad behavior because I was trauma- bonded to him.

I should have walked away after the first or fifth time, but I spent 3 ½ years with him before I finally found a reason to leave. While it was happening, I never knew why I found any of it acceptable — I’m not a meek person, and I did realize that his actions weren’t right — but I didn’t fight back. Now I know that I was “accepting” that bad behavior because I was trauma- bonded to him. Yes, he abused me, but he had also isolated me from my friends (they were sick of the constant drama and the fact that I stayed with him) and conditioned me to think that there were so many things wrong with me that nobody else would ever want to be with me. So I stayed, until something happened that finally pushed me over the edge.

A big turning point

I found out I was pregnant. I had an inkling that something was off when I couldn’t keep anything down or started gagging at smells that had never bothered me before — then eight positive pee sticks told me it was true. Our relationship was clearly awful, but experiencing pregnancy and being a mother is something I’d always dreamed of, so I was cautiously hopeful that maybe this was the one thing that would finally cause him to change. The reality: he blocked my number and all of my social media accounts. His friends tried to help me reach him, but even they couldn’t get him to respond.

The text he finally sent about six weeks later is when that final straw broke, and everything clicked. “Did you get rid of that thing yet?” I read those words on my way to work, and even though they hurt just as bad as his punches did, I didn’t cry or turn around to go home. I think I was in shock — at the cruelty, at the fact that this was my life — so I got myself to work and scheduled an emergency appointment with my doctor.

Later that afternoon, I got an abortion. That’s when I broke down and cried, uncontrollably. In front of my kind, compassionate doctor when she confirmed that I was pregnant through a urine test, then on a heartbreakingly clear ultrasound. Alone in the exam room after she handed me the first of the two pills I had to swallow. In front of strangers on the whole train ride home. Then alone in my bathroom and bedroom while I weathered the physical and emotional pain. Later that evening, my best friend came to spend the night with me. But it was one of the hardest and most isolating things I’ve ever been through (I still think about it all the time), even though I know it was the right decision.

The aftermath

I blocked his number, all of his social media accounts and then I tried to figure out how to heal. But healing didn’t come quickly, or easily. The man who did nothing but abuse, disrespect and ignore me suddenly wanted to talk to me all the time. He had found a new way to abuse me. A few times a week, I’d get text messages from unknown numbers, some of them lovey dovey, others mean and harassing; apparently, he had downloaded a free text message app that allowed him to create as many random numbers as he wanted, in order to get around the blocks. I also suspect he created fake social media accounts to keep tabs on me. This went on for months, and my blocked numbers list grew to be dozens of digits long. After that, he only reached out once a week, then once a month, then every few months. To this day, all these years later, I’ll still get an occasional cryptic text from an unknown number that I know is him, or a private message on social media with a detail only he would know, and I never pick up a call that’s not in my address book. I guess it’s his way of trying to hold on to that power and control that he once had over me.

Stronger today

I vowed I would never allow myself to be physically abused again. And I haven’t. But because anything feels better than being berated and hit, I’ve still found myself entangled in relationships with unhealthy patterns. I also navigate complex trauma responses daily, even when nothing has triggered me — I have a lot of habits, tendencies, quirks, and ways of moving through the world that most people probably assume is “me being me,” and I know these things don’t always make sense to the people around me. In reality, I’m simply trying to cope and maintain my functional adult life. Life during and after abuse is a journey, and I’ve learned that it’s OK to sometimes not be OK. But with lots of therapy and work looking inward, I’m on the path to breaking the cycle of abuse — all types of abuse —once and for all.

Domestic violence against women: Recognize patterns, seek help

Domestic violence is a serious threat for many women. Know the signs of an abusive relationship and how to leave a dangerous situation.

Your partner apologizes and says the hurtful behavior won't happen again — but you fear it will. At times you wonder whether you're imagining the abuse, yet the emotional or physical pain you feel is real. If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing domestic violence.

Recognize domestic violence

Domestic violence — also called intimate partner violence — occurs between people in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence can take many forms, including emotional, sexual and physical abuse and threats of abuse. Abuse by a partner can happen to anyone, but domestic violence is most often directed toward women. Domestic violence can happen in heterosexual and same-sex relationships.

Abusive relationships always involve an imbalance of power and control. An abuser uses intimidating, hurtful words and behaviors to control a partner.

It might not be easy to identify domestic violence at first. While some relationships are clearly abusive from the outset, abuse often starts subtly and gets worse over time. You might be experiencing domestic violence if you're in a relationship with someone who:

Calls you names, insults you or puts you down
Prevents or discourages you from going to work or school or seeing family members or friends
Tries to control how you spend money, where you go, what medicines you take or what you wear
Acts jealous or possessive or constantly accuses you of being unfaithful
Gets angry when drinking alcohol or using drugs
Threatens you with violence or a weapon
Hits, kicks, shoves, slaps, chokes or otherwise hurts you, your children or your pets
Forces you to have sex or engage in sexual acts against your will
Blames you for his or her violent behavior or tells you that you deserve it

If you're in a same-sex relationship or if you're bisexual or transgender, you might also be experiencing abuse if you're in a relationship with someone who:

Threatens to tell friends, family, colleagues or community members your sexual orientation or gender identity
Tells you that authorities won't help you because of your sexuality or gender identity
Justifies abuse by questioning your sexuality or gender identity

Pregnancy, children, family members and domestic violence

Sometimes domestic violence begins — or increases — during pregnancy. Domestic violence puts your health and the baby's health at risk. The danger continues after the baby is born.

Even if your child isn't abused, simply witnessing domestic violence can be harmful. Children who grow up in abusive homes are more likely to be abused and have behavioral problems than are other children. As adults, they're more likely to become abusers or think abuse is a normal part of relationships.

You might worry that telling the truth will further endanger you, your child or other family members — and that it might break up your family. But seeking help is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Break the cycle

If you're in an abusive situation, you might recognize this pattern:

Your abuser threatens violence.
Your abuser strikes.
Your abuser apologizes, promises to change and offers gifts.
The cycle repeats itself.

The longer you stay in an abusive relationship, the greater the physical and emotional toll. You might become depressed and anxious, or you might begin to doubt your ability to take care of yourself. You might feel helpless or paralyzed.

You may also wonder if the abuse is your fault — a common point of confusion among survivors of domestic abuse that may make it more difficult to seek help.

Don't take the blame

You may not be ready to seek help because you believe you're at least partially to blame for the abuse in the relationship. Reasons may include:

Your partner blames you for the violence in your relationship. Abusive partners rarely take responsibility for their actions.
Your partner only exhibits abusive behavior with you. Abusers are often concerned with outward appearances and may appear charming and stable to those outside of your relationship. This may cause you to believe that his or her actions can only be explained by something you've done.
Therapists and health care providers who see you alone or with your partner haven't detected a problem. If you haven't told your health care provider about the abuse, they may only take note of unhealthy patterns in your thinking or behavior. This can lead to a misdiagnosis. For example, survivors of intimate partner violence may develop symptoms that resemble chronic disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome or fibromyalgia. Exposure to intimate partner violence also increases your risk of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
You have acted out verbally or physically against your abuser, yelling, pushing or hitting your partner during conflicts. You may worry that you are abusive, but it's much more likely that you acted in self-defense or intense emotional distress. Your abuser may use such incidents to manipulate you, describing them as proof that you are the abusive partner.

If you're having trouble identifying what's happening, take a step back and look at larger patterns in your relationship. Then review the signs of domestic violence. In an abusive relationship, the person who routinely uses these behaviors is the abuser. The person on the receiving end is being abused.

Unique challenges

If you're an immigrant , you may be hesitant to seek help out of fear that you will be deported. Language barriers, lack of economic independence and limited social support can increase your isolation and your ability to access resources.

Laws in the United States guarantee protection from domestic abuse, regardless of your immigrant status. Free or low-cost resources are available, including lawyers, shelter and medical care for you and your children. You may also be eligible for legal protections that allow immigrants who experience domestic violence to stay in the United States.

Call a national domestic violence hotline for guidance. These services are free and protect your privacy.

If you're an older woman , you may face challenges related to your age and the length of your relationship. You may have grown up in a time when domestic violence was simply not discussed. You or your partner may have health problems that increase your dependency or sense of responsibility.
If you're in a same-sex relationship , you might be less likely to seek help after an assault if you don't want to disclose your sexual orientation. If you've been sexually assaulted by another woman, you might also fear that you won't be believed.

Still, the only way to break the cycle of domestic violence is to take action. Start by telling someone about the abuse, whether it's a friend, a loved one, a health care provider or another close contact. You can also call a national domestic violence hotline.

At first, you might find it hard to talk about the abuse. But understand that you are not alone and there are experts who can help you. You'll also likely feel relief and receive much-needed support.

Create a safety plan

Leaving an abuser can be dangerous. Consider taking these precautions:

Call a women's shelter or domestic violence hotline for advice. Make the call at a safe time — when the abuser isn't around — or from a friend's house or other safe location.
Pack an emergency bag that includes items you'll need when you leave, such as extra clothes and keys. Leave the bag in a safe place. Keep important personal papers, money and prescription medications handy so that you can take them with you on short notice.
Know exactly where you'll go and how you'll get there.

Protect your communication and location

An abuser can use technology to monitor your telephone and online communication and to track your location. If you're concerned for your safety, seek help. To maintain your privacy:

Use phones cautiously. Your abuser might intercept calls and listen to your conversations. An abusive partner might use caller ID, check your cellphone or search your phone billing records to see your call and texting history.
Use your home computer cautiously. Your abuser might use spyware to monitor your emails and the websites you visit. Consider using a computer at work, at the library or at a friend's house to seek help.
Turn off GPS devices. Your abuser might use a GPS device on your vehicle or your phone to pinpoint your location.
Frequently change your email password. Choose passwords that would be difficult for your abuser to guess.
Clear your viewing history. Follow your browser's instructions to clear any record of websites or graphics you've viewed.

Where to find help

In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number or law enforcement agency. The following resources also can help:

Someone you trust. Turn to a friend, loved one, neighbor, co-worker, or religious or spiritual adviser for support.
National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE (800-799-7233; toll-free). Call the hotline for crisis intervention and referrals to resources, such as women's shelters.
Your health care provider. A health care provider typically will treat injuries and can refer you to safe housing and other local resources.
A local women's shelter or crisis center. Shelters and crisis centers typically provide 24-hour emergency shelter as well as advice on legal matters and advocacy and support services.
A counseling or mental health center. Counseling and support groups for women in abusive relationships are available in most communities.
A local court. A court can help you obtain a restraining order that legally mandates the abuser to stay away from you or face arrest. Local advocates might be available to help guide you through the process.

It can be hard to recognize or admit that you're in an abusive relationship — but help is available. Remember, no one deserves to be abused.

The last Special Edition of Policing, dedicated to Domestic Abuse, was published in 2016. This edition presented research centred on the practicalities of police and law enforcement agencies when dealing with domestic abuse. The issue included papers on risk assessment, the use of technology to improve investigations, perpetrator profiling, and police culture. In the issue’s editorial the guest editors’ note that, ‘Despite a great deal of research over the last 30 years, we still have major gaps in understanding the most effective strategies, in developing and implementing the best risk assessments and delivering the best victim and offender approaches’ ( Baldry and Sebire, 2016). There was a call for researchers and practitioners to support an evidence base for understanding ‘what works’ when policing domestic abuse.

Since there is still no comprehensive global database, we are unable to measure the number of lives lost to domestic abuse over the 8 years since that last Special Edition. A conservative and somewhat sobering estimate is approximately 376,000 women ( United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2021). However, public awareness, researcher understanding, and practitioner expertise have continued to develop at pace in the interim, adding to the evidence base of what works. Seismic global events have also impacted the research and policing of domestic abuse. Coronavirus disease 2019 and its associated lockdowns, restrictions on movements, and service provision have developed our understanding of domestic abuse within the context of a global pandemic ( Kourti et al. , 2023). The #MeTo movement opened up public debate and awareness of gender-based violence ( Wilcox et al. , 2021). However, despite these new insights, the perennial challenges associated with policing domestic abuse, such as risk assessment, best use of technology, and what works recognized in the 2016 issue, remain very much on the research agenda.

Domestic violence is one of the worldwide crises which are affecting marriage and families. This poses the greatest threat to the general behavior of the people’s lives. The society in which we live has for many decades endeavored to conceal the reality of domestic violence. Although in the past, people were traditionally well behaved and thus leniency and respect that quenched the anger was abundant. This is not meant to mean that torture and family abuse were things and acts unheard of. Family violence could be provoked by either one of the parents or even a child of that family. This family violence is commonly associated with men, and research has given more evidence on this. This is quite well articulated to the greatest obstacle related to gender inequality. (McIntyre, 1984)

Nowadays, family violence is quite a common phenomenon for both old and younger married men and women. Younger married women at the age of thirteen and twenties are at great risk of family violence. Men’s violence toward their wives has impacted their families’ progress mostly. Family violence takes many forms which include sexual abuse, physical assaults, and murder, emotional as well as restriction of freedoms and rights, coercion, and threats. Most of these violent acts have been reported to have been as a result of misuse of alcohol or drugs. High percentages of violent reports have been due to excessive drinking or from people addicted to alcohol.

The majority of rape cases have been observed to be a pre-planned projects. it occurs as indoor raping exclusively by men towards their wives. This is termed violence against women because there is no desire for mutual feeling. The perpetrator may either want to show that the woman is subordinate to him i.e. He tries to demonstrate how powerful over his wife. (Grann & Fazel 2004)

Family violence portrays a bad image of a family. Psychologically, men and women involved in family violence find disturb by negative questions in their daily life. They are seen to be neurotic and poor coppers. They become obsessed with things that are happening to their partner’s lifestyle rather than getting engage with developmental projects. This leads them in controlling the behavior of the other partner and this deters personal concentration on the matter of paramount importance. They are also affected such that they partner with those individuals with quake behaviors so that they may satisfy their comfort and steal their minds from the family problem realities.

While there are enormous reports of intimate partner homicides, murders, rapes, and assaults, it is important to note that victims of all this violence find it very difficult to explain the matter and incidents to their friends. They view this as something shameful of disclosing family issues to the public. This is most very common with men because the man in his thinking capacity does not admit to overpowering always by his counterpart female partner. This makes it very hard for men victims to air their problems for assistance. (Morrell, 2004)

Furthermore, children are not exceptional about the psychological effect due to family violence. When husband and wife expose the violent action to their children, they make the child learn the kind of life that they lead. The emotions of the children may be triggered and this causes either to develops a negative attitude against his /her parents. The picture that is formed back in his medulla oblongata remains a stumbling block for his future reasoning and planning. (McIntyre, 1984)

As I conclude, family violence should be discouraged for its impacts are enormously and pervasively destructive. So partner should get into controllable action which would not lead to violence.

Watching It Ends With Us as a Domestic Violence Survivor, I Saw Myself Onscreen (Exclusive)

As someone who's experienced intimate partner violence, I was nervous about seeing the film. But the experience surpassed my expectations

When I went to an early screening of I t Ends With Us , the screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling book, I packed as many tissues as I could stuff in my pockets. I twisted my fingers around each other as Blake Lively’s Lily met Justin Baldoni’s Ryle, silently mouthing the mantra my therapist taught me. You’re safe. You’re loved. You’re strong.

And when the eponymous Casserole Scene splashed across the screen, I recognized the terror in Lily’s face, the flash of anger on Ryle’s. My chest tightened and I couldn’t help but flash back to a similar scene from my own past.

As Ryle and Lily debriefed his outburst, her injuries and both of their rationalizations for the way things went down, I remembered sitting at a not-so-different kitchen counter, having a conversation that mirrored theirs so closely, it brought tears to my eyes.

I recalled giving my abuser’s photograph to the receptionist at my job and warning her not to let him in, checking every few years to make sure I still have his threatening emails and voicemails, that the old police reports are still tucked in my safe. Just in case the saga that tried to ruin my life isn’t over, because that’s the thing about trauma: It never really goes away.

I’m not going to name my abuser in this essay because my story isn’t about him. I’m bigger than the way he tried to control me, stronger than the fear that strangled my voice for years after he put his hands on me for the first time in 2007. Back then, he swore he didn’t know what he was doing, didn’t mean it, wouldn’t do it again. He did. He did. He did.

I eventually got out from under his influence, got enough therapy to practically open my own practice, swore I’d never let anyone direct the trajectory of my life ever again. As Hoover writes in the book, “We break the pattern before the pattern breaks us.”

Watching It Ends With Us as a domestic violence survivor was hard. I won’t sugarcoat it, because I don’t believe in doing that anymore. But it was also profoundly healing to see my experience mirrored onscreen. I texted my own real-life version of Lily’s best friend Allyssa when it was over. “I survived,” I wrote. “And I loved it.”

As a writer who finds solace in words, I’ve sought out books about trauma since before I realized I was doing it. I’ve cried my way through In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, texted passages of Hunger by Roxane Gay to my therapist and underlined almost the entirety of Know My Name by Chanel Miller.

But I’ve hesitated to watch intimate partner violence portrayed on the big screen, surrounded by hundreds of other people. I can put a book down when the words start to swim, walk away from a TV show when it feels like too much. But watching It Ends With Us at Colleen Hoover’s Book Bonanza in June, I couldn’t escape what was happening in front of me or between my ears. And that turned out to be a good thing.

I could tell Hoover, Baldoni, Lively and the rest had taken deep care with the production, just like the author did with the book that’s based, in part, on her own mother’s relationship. "Seeing these characters come to life on the big screen is a dream come true," the author told PEOPLE, in advance of the film. "The power of visual storytelling is undeniable, and it can evoke even stronger emotions and empathy from the audience by bringing a sense of immediacy and intensity to the story. I definitely felt so much while watching the adaptation."

Watching the film surrounded by fellow Hoover fans (the official name for her fan club is the CoHort, for those newly seeking membership) very much bore that out. We laughed, gasped and swooned together and at more than a few moments, sniffles and even some muffled sobs could be heard throughout the pin-drop quiet theater.

Afterward, we all emerged with smeared mascara, puffy eyes and the kind of emotional hangover that only comes from wringing out your heart like a wet dishrag. We boarded buses to take us back to the hotel, chattering about our favorite parts, that beautiful score, the outfits (the outfits!) and how closely it hewed to the book. What I didn’t feel was exploited, or alone. I fell back into bed after midnight, my heart full. That’s the beauty of watching art in community, I realized. Even if it’s hard, everyone around you is experiencing some version of the same thing.

The film version of It Ends With Us reminded me of my favorite lines from the book: “Naked truths aren’t always pretty.” In this case, the truths aren’t pretty, but the portrayal is. It felt like another step on my lifelong road to proving to myself that you can knock me down, but I’m strong enough to get back up, dust myself off, and keep on walking.

It Ends With Us is in theaters nationwide on Aug. 9.

Physical Abuse: This form of abuse involves physical harm inflicted upon the victim. It includes acts such as hitting, kicking, slapping, choking, or any other form of bodily violence. Often, the physical scars are visible, serving as a grim reminder of the trauma endured.
Sexual Abuse: Sexual abuse within abusive relationships involves non-consensual sexual activities imposed upon the victim. This may range from unwanted sexual advances and coercion to sexual assault. Victims often grapple with profound feelings of violation and shame.
Psychological and Emotional Abuse: Psychological and emotional abuse is insidious, leaving no visible marks but causing severe psychological harm. It encompasses tactics like manipulation, verbal threats, humiliation, isolation, and control. The scars of emotional abuse run deep, eroding the victim's self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
Financial Abuse: Abusers often exercise control over their victims' financial resources, leaving them financially dependent and powerless. This form of abuse may involve withholding money, preventing employment, or sabotaging the victim's financial stability.
Digital Abuse: In the digital age, abusers have found new avenues to exert control. Digital abuse includes actions like cyberbullying, stalking on social media, or using technology to monitor and intimidate the victim.

The Complex Dynamics of Abusive Relationships

Cycle of Abuse: Abusive relationships often follow a cyclical pattern. The cycle typically begins with a period of tension building, characterized by escalating conflict and tension. This tension culminates in an acute abusive incident, such as physical violence. Following the abusive episode, an abuser may display remorse and offer apologies, initiating a phase of reconciliation. However, this reconciliation phase is often short-lived and eventually gives way to renewed tension, perpetuating the cycle.
Isolation: Abusers frequently isolate their victims, cutting them off from friends and family. Isolation serves to control the victim's social interactions and limit their support network, making it harder for them to seek help or escape the relationship.
Gaslighting: Gaslighting is a manipulative tactic used by abusers to make victims doubt their reality. Abusers may deny their actions, trivialize the abuse, or shift blame onto the victim, causing them to question their perception of events.
Dependency: Abusers often foster financial and emotional dependency, making it challenging for victims to imagine a life outside the relationship. This dependency can be a significant barrier to leaving the abuser.
Emotional Bonding: Paradoxically, abusive relationships may involve moments of intimacy and affection. These intermittent displays of love can create a strong emotional bond that keeps victims attached to their abusers, hoping for change.
Patterns of Escalation: Recognizing patterns of escalating abuse is essential. Victims and their support networks should be vigilant about increases in the frequency or severity of violence, as this can signal a heightened risk.
Isolation and Control: Assess the extent to which the abuser isolates and controls the victim. Isolation tactics and increased control can indicate a greater risk, as they may signify the abuser's desperation to maintain dominance.
Access to Weapons: Determine the abuser's access to weapons. The presence of firearms or other deadly weapons can significantly elevate the risk of lethal violence.
History of Violence: Consider the abuser's history of violence. If they have a documented history of violent behavior, including previous arrests or restraining orders, this should be taken seriously as a predictive factor.
Escalation of Threats: Monitor any escalation in threats made by the abuser. Expressions of intent to harm the victim or themselves should be treated as urgent warning signs.
Support System: Assess the strength of the victim's support system. A robust support network can be a protective factor, potentially reducing the risk of further violence.
Legal Intervention: Evaluate whether legal interventions, such as restraining orders, have been sought or granted. Understanding the legal measures in place can provide insights into the victim's safety.

Holt man who led police on chase through swamp after domestic incident sentenced

CHARLOTTE — A Holt man who ran from police following a domestic incident in Eaton Rapids in January, prompting school children to shelter in place, has been sentenced to probation.

Jesse Wayne Babcock, 33, pleaded guilty in April to resisting or obstructing police and three other charges in connection with the incident with an agreement he would receive no upfront jail time, court records indicate.

On Thursday, Eaton County Circuit Judge Kelly Morton placed him on probation for 18 months and assessed more than $860 in fines and costs, according to online records.

The incident in January started with a 911 call about an intoxicated and possibly suicidal man who had threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend. Police spotted the suspect in the area of West Vermontville Highway and North Bradley Road and chased him through a swamp and the river.

Michigan State Police troopers in a small watercraft eventually pulled Babcock from the Thornapple River east of Vermontville after authorities had asked area residents to shelter in place. Maple Valley Schools placed its elementary school under a shelter-in-place order but lifted it after Babcock was caught.

Babcock was taken to a hospital for treatment of hypthermia before being lodged in the jail, police said at the time.

When his book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” was published in 2016, JD Vance sent an email apologizing to a close friend from his Yale Law School days. The friend identified as transgender, but Mr. Vance referred to them in the book as a lesbian.

“Hey Sofes, here’s an excerpt from my book,” Mr. Vance wrote to his friend, Sofia Nelson. “I send this to you not just to brag, but because I’m sure if you read it you’ll notice reference to ‘an extremely progressive lesbian.’”

“I recognize now that this may not accurately reflect how you think of yourself, and for that I am really sorry,” he wrote. “I hope you’re not offended, but if you are, I’m sorry! Love you, JD.”

Nelson wrote back the same day, calling Mr. Vance “buddy” and thanking him for “being sweet,” adding, “If you had written gender queer radical pragmatist, nobody would know what you mean.” Nelson asked for an autographed copy, then signed off with, “Love, Sofia.”

That exchange is from a series of emails between two friends, part of a close-knit group of 16 students who remained together throughout their first law school semester in the fall of 2010. As now-Senator Vance seeks the vice presidency, Nelson has shared about 90 of their emails and text messages, primarily from 2014 through 2017, with The New York Times.

Thousands of anti-racism protesters have descended on cities across the country - outnumbering anti-immigration demonstrators for the fourth day in a row.

Lucy Connolly, the wife of a Tory councillor, has been remanded in custody ahead of a crown court appearance over publishing written material intended to stir up racial hatred;
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has warned the impact of the riots on the judicial system will be felt for years to come;
The parents of six-year-old Bebe King, who was killed in the Southport stabbings, have paid tribute to their "precious daughter" and revealed her older sister saw the attack and escaped.

Police have been granted enhanced stop and search powers in part of Yeovil tonight.

Avon and Somerset Police said the powers allow officers to search people who they consider "at risk of violence", without reasonable suspicion.

The force said the technique has already resulted in arrests being made this evening.

It comes after it reported a small number of people had gathered in the grounds of a church for a peaceful demonstration.

Four men have been charged following the riots in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough last week.

Cleveland Police said a 24-year-old man had been charged with burglary over the unrest in Middlesbrough last Sunday.

Another 24 year-old was charged with violent disorder and a 27-year-old was charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker.

A 19-year-old was charged with violent disorder in relation to the riots in Hartlepool on 31 July.

All four men have been remanded in custody and are due to appear in court on Monday.

The impact of the riots could be felt for months or years to come, the justice secretary has warned.

Writing a piece for The Observer, Shabana Mahmood said the justice system has shown it can act swiftly, but its work has been made more difficult due to the state it was left in by the Conservatives.

Courts have been working extended hours to deal with rioters who were charged by police during the week-long disorder.

"The justice system has shown it can rise to this challenge. Should further criminality and disorder ensue, we will continue to deliver justice, until the last offender languishes in one of our jails," Ms Mahmood said.

"But we must make no mistake. Rising to this challenge has been made harder by doing so within the justice system we inherited from the Conservatives."

She pointed out that there are "record crown court backlogs" and prisons "close to overflowing".

"The impact of these days of disorder will be felt for months and years to come. They make the job of rebuilding the justice system harder," she added.

The parents of a six-year-old girl who was killed in the Southport stabbings have paid tribute to their "precious daughter" and revealed her older sister saw the attack and escaped.

Bebe King died along with nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar and Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged seven, after the stabbings at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in the Merseyside town on 29 July.

The deaths of the three girls sparked anti-immigration protests and riots across UK towns and cities after false information circulated on social media that the attacker was an illegal migrant.

In a statement issued by Merseyside Police, Bebe's parents Lauren and Ben said their daughter "was full of joy, light, and love, and she will always remain in our hearts as the sweet, kind, and spirited girl we adore".

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Chris Taylor said: "This order will give officers on the ground the ability to direct people suspected of being involved in or planning criminality to leave the designated area for a period of 48 hours, and to arrest them if they return."

A Section 60 order, which gives officers enhanced stop and search powers, is already in place in the area.

"Both orders are extra tools at our disposal to help keep the public safe, and highly visible police patrols will enforce them in the next 48 hours," Mr Taylor said.

A total of 779 people have been arrested over rioting, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) has said.

Of those, 349 have been charged, it added.

Suspected rioters have continued to appear in court today, including the wife of a Tory councillor who has been accused of publishing written material intended to stir up racial hatred.

Lucy Connolly, 41, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning and did not enter a plea.

The NPCC said specialist officers have been tasked with pursuing suspected online offenders and so-called influencers, who they say are responsible for "spreading hate and inciting violence on a large scale".

Across the country, teams have been investigating "hundreds of leads".

"This abhorrent activity didn't happen by itself. Large crowds and gatherings didn't mobilise spontaneously," said Chief Constable Chris Haward, the NPCC lead for serious and organised crime.

"It was the result of dozens of so-called influencers, exploiting the outpouring of grief from the tragic loss of three young girls in Southport.

"They knowingly spread misinformation, stoked the flames of hatred and division and incited violence from the comfort of their own homes, causing chaos on other people's doorsteps."

The leader of Newcastle City Council has said he is "angry" that some residents were made to "feel unsafe" by "right wing agitators".

In a post on Facebook, Councillor Nick Kemp praised police for their work in the city, and urged people to stay "united".

Protests organised by Enough Is Enough have been taking place today, but passed without any violence or disorder breaking out.

"Northumbria Police have done a phenomenal job in preparing for today and their swift actions throughout the entire week have acted as a deterrent," Cllr Kemp said.

"Across the country, we have seen right wing agitators looking to divide our city and sow seeds of hatred. Today, Newcastle showed them what we are about.

"However, I am angry that they have made some of our residents feel unsafe. That their actions have caused doubt among those who call our city home."

The territory of the region has been inhabited since ancient times. Numerous sites of ancient people were discovered, dating from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age. In the 1990s, the Oblast's population was distinguished by relatively high support for parties and candidates of the right and democratic persuasion. In the 1996 presidential election, Boris Yeltsin , a native of the region who lived in Sverdlovsk until the 1980s, won over 70% of the vote. The first people settled here in the Stone Age. At the end of the 16th century, the Russian kingdom gained control of the region. In the 17th century, the most significant stage of the initial development of this area happened, when Russian settlers began a massive advance to the east. In 1598, the first settlers founded the town of Verkhoturye on the territory of the present Sverdlovsk region.

Verkhoturye became the first capital of the Urals because of its strategic location on the Babinov road - an important crossroads of trade routes. Sverdlovsk oblast acted as a transshipment base between the central part of the country and the actively developed regions of Siberia and Central Asia.

The presence of strategic reserves of iron and copper ore, as well as large forest areas, predetermined the specialization of the region (ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, wood processing, mining, etc.). Exploration of minerals in the Sverdlovsk region began at the end of the 17th century.

In the 18th century, the Demidov dynasty founded several plants in the region that turned into large production and economic complexes. Sverdlovsk Oblast received its name from its administrative center - the city of Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinburg). The name appeared on January 17, 1934, together with the formation of the region. After renaming Sverdlovsk back to Yekaterinburg, the region was not renamed and retained its Soviet name.

The territory of Sverdlovsk Oblast stretches from west to east for 560 kilometers, from north to south - for 660 kilometers. The climate is continental. The average temperature in January is about minus 16-20 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19-30 degrees Celsius.

The Sverdlovsk region, being one of the oldest mining regions of Russia, is rich in a variety of natural resources. Sverdlovsk Oblast is known for its traditional International exhibition of armament in Nizhny Tagil, annual Russian Economic Forum in Yekaterinburg. Yekaterinburg is the 4th largest scientific center in Russia after Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and Novosibirsk.

It is one of the most important industrial regions of Russia. The structure of the local industrial complex is dominated by ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, enrichment of uranium and iron ore, engineering.

The largest enterprises of ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy are the Nizhnetagilsky Metallurgical Combine, the Kachkanar GOK Vanadiy, VSMPO-Avisma, the Pervouralsky Novotrubny Plant, the Bogoslovsky and the Ural Aluminum Smelters, the Kamensk-Uralsk Metallurgical Plant, the Sinarsky Pipe Plant, the Seversk Pipe Plant, as well as enterprises of the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company (Uralelectromed, Sredneuralsky Copper Smelting Plant, Metallurgical Plant named after A.K. Serov, etc.).

The most important enterprises of the machine-building complex are Uralvagonzavod, Ural Heavy Machinery Plant, Uralelectrotyazhmash, Uralkhimmash, Ural Turbine Plant, Ural Civil Aviation Plant. Uralkhimplast, which produces synthetic resins, is the largest chemical plant in Russia.

Attractions of Sverdlovsk Oblast

Coniferous forests and numerous rivers make the nature of the Sverdlovsk region attractive for tourists. There is a number of reserves and nature parks: Visimsky State Nature Reserve, Denezhkin Kamen National Nature Reserve, Pripyshminsky Bory National Park, Oleny Ruchi Nature Park, Chusovaya River Nature Park, Bazhovskiye Places Nature Park, Rezhevskoy Nature and Mineralogical Reserve.

Some of the most interesting sights located outside of Yekaterinburg:

Nevyansk Tower - a leaning tower in the center of the town of Nevyansk, built by the order of Akinfiy Demidov, the founder of the mining industry in the Urals, in the first half of the 18th century;
Cathedral of the Savior’s Transfiguration in Nevyansk;
Battle glory of the Urals - an open-air museum of military equipment in Verkhnyaya Pyshma;
Automotive equipment museum in Verkhnyaya Pyshma - one of the largest collections of Russian cars, special equipment, motorcycles, bicycles;
Obelisk symbolizing the border between Europe and Asia in Pervouralsk;
Verkhoturye - a historical town with a kremlin and a lot of churches called the spiritual center of the Urals. The Cross Exaltation Cathedral of the St. Nicholas Monastery is the third largest cathedral in Russia after the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg;
Mount Kachkanar located near the border between Europe and Asia. At the top of the mountain there is the Buddhist Monastery of Shad Tchup Ling;
Monastery in the name of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers on Ganina Yama standing on the site of the extermination and the first burial of the remains of the family of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II and his servants;
Museum Complex Severskaya Domna in Polevskoy, 52 kilometers from Ekaterinburg - an industrial and architectural monument (1860);
Open-air museum in Nizhnyaya Sinyachikha - Ural wooden architecture and the richest collection of the Ural house painting;
Severskaya Pisanitsa - a monument with rock paintings and images of the Neolithic Age located near the village of Severka.

Yekaterinburg & Sverdlovsk Oblast

History, Politics, and Economics

Yekaterinburg lies at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, east of the slopes of the Ural Mountains in central Russia. The continental divide is 30 kilometers west of the city. Yekaterinburg is Russia’s third or fourth largest city with a population of 1.5 million. It was founded in 1723 and is named for Peter the Great’s wife, Catherine I. Peter recognized the importance of Yekaterinburg and the surrounding region for the rapid industrial development necessary to bolster Russia’s military power.Today, Yekaterinburg is primarily known both as a center of heavy industry and steel-making, the Russian equivalent of Pittsburgh, and as a major freight transportation hub. Its major industries include ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, chemicals, timber, and pulp and paper. Yekaterinburg has long been an important trading center for goods coming from Siberia, Central Asia and Europe. The city also has a reputation as a center of higher education and research. The Urals Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located there with its 18 institutes and numerous research facilities linked to industry. Yekaterinburg is also well known as a center for the performing arts. Its Opera and Ballet Theater dates back to 1912. The Urals Philharmonic Orchestra is the largest symphony orchestra in central Russia.

Yekaterinburg is the capital of Sverdlovsk Oblast (an oblast is the equivalent of a American state). Economically, Sverdlovsk is among 10 of the 89 administrative subdivisions of the Russian Federation that are net contributors to the federal budget. Sverdlovsk has produced many prominent political figures, including Russia’s first President, Boris Yeltsin, and Russia’s first elected Governor, Eduard Rossel. Since the establishment of the Russian Federation, Sverdlovsk Oblast has been one of the nation’s leaders in political and economic reform. In 1996, Sverdlovsk became the first oblast to conclude agreements with the Federal Government granting it greater political autonomy and the right to conduct its own foreign economic relations.

Economic reform has gathered momentum in Sverdlovsk Oblast. The majority of Sverdlovsk’s industries have been privatized. 75% of enterprises are at least partially owned by private interests. About three-quarters of retail sales and industrial output is generated by private enterprise. Services have grown to 40 percent of oblast GDP, up from only 16 percent in 1992. About 25,000 small businesses are registered in the oblast. Small businesses make up about one-third of the construction, trade and food service.

Industry and Natural Resources

Sverdlovvsk Oblast, like most of the Urals region, possesses abundant natural resources. It is one of Russia’s leaders in mineral extraction. Sverdlovsk produces 70% of Russia’s bauxite, 60% of asbestos, 23% of iron, 97% of vanadium, 6% of copper and 2% of nickel. Forests cover 65% of the oblast. It also produces 6% of Russia’s timber and 7% of its plywood. Sverdlovsk has the largest GDP of any oblast in the Urals. The oblast’s major exports include steel (20% of its foreign trade turnover), chemicals (11%), copper (11%), aluminum (8%) and titanium (3%). In terms of industrial output, Sverdlovsk ranks second only to Moscow Oblast and produces 5% of Russia’s total. Ferrous metallurgy and machine-building still constitute a major part of the oblast’s economy. Yekaterinburg is well known for its concentration of industrial manufacturing plants. The city’s largest factories produce oil extraction equipment, tubes and pipes, steel rollers, steam turbines and manufacturing equipment for other factories.

Non-ferrous metallurgy remains a growth sector. The Verkhnaya Salda Titanium Plant (VSMPO) is the largest titanium works in Russia and the second largest in the world. A second growth sector is food production and processing, with many firms purchasing foreign equipment to upgrade production. The financial crisis has increased demand for domestically produced foodstuffs, as consumers can no longer afford more expensive imported products. Many of Yekaterinburg’s leading food processors — including the Konfi Chocolate Factory, Myasomoltorg Ice-Cream Plant, Myasokombinat Meat Packing Plant and Patra Brewery — have remained financially stable and look forward to growth.

Foreign Trade and Investment

Sverdlovsk Oblast offers investors opportunities mainly in raw materials (metals and minerals) and heavy industries (oil extraction and pipeline equipment). There is also interest in importing Western products in the fields of telecommunications, food processing, safety and security systems, and medicine and construction materials. Both Sverdlovsk Oblast and Yekaterinburg city officials have encouraged foreign investment and created a receptive business climate. The oblast has a Foreign Investment Support Department and a website which profiles over 200 local companies. The city government opened its own investment support center in 1998 to assist foreign companies. Despite local efforts, foreign investors face the same problems in Yekaterinburg as they do elsewhere in Russia. Customs and tax issues top the list of problem areas.

Sverdlovsk Oblast leads the Urals in attracting foreign investment The top five foreign investors are the U.S., UK, Germany, China and Cyprus. About 70 foreign firms have opened representative offices in Yekaterinburg, including DHL, Ford, IBM, Proctor and Gamble, and Siemens. Lufthansa airlines has opened a station in Yekaterinburg and offers three flights per week to Frankfurt.

America is Sverdlovsk’s number one investor with $114 million in investment and 79 joint ventures. The three largest U.S. investors are Coca-Cola, Pepsi and USWest. Coca-Cola and Pepsi both opened bottling plants in Yekaterinburg in 1998. USWest has a joint venture, Uralwestcom, which is one of Yekaterinburg’s leading companies in cellular phone sales and service. America is Sverdlovsk Oblast’s number one trading partner. In 1998, Boeing signed a ten-year titanium supply contract valued at approximately $200 million with the VSMPO titanium plant. Besides the U.S., Sverdlovsk’s top trading partners include Holland, Kazakhstan, Germany and the UK.

Yekaterinburg, like most of Russia, has a continental climate. The city is located at the source of the Iset River and is surrounded by lakes and hills. Temperatures tend to be mild in summer and severe in winter. The average temperature in January is -15.5C (4F), but occasionally reaches -40C (-40F).
