Dussehra is the most significant festivals celebrated in the Hindu community. It falls after Navratri in October or November. It is a festival that denotes triumph over wicked. The word Dussehra also means ten evil faces were beheaded in order to maintain peace and harmony. The celebration of the festival originated from the below-mentioned stories from Mahabharata, Ramayana and assassination of Demon Mahishasura. These stories are meant to be the most prevalent and widespread.

Ramayana: Dussehra celebrates the success of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. The Ramayana narrates the tale of Lord Rama who marries Sita at the bridegroom tournament. After Rama is banished from his kingdom, he retreats to the forest along with his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita to spend fourteen years in the woods. King Ravana plays a prominent role in Ramayana. His sister Shoopranakha fells in love with both the brothers and wishes to marry them. But Lakshmana refuses to marry her and Rama could not marry her because he is already married.

On hearing this, she gets infuriated and threatens to kill Sita and rushes towards her. At that moment, Lakshmana cuts off her nose. She cries in pain and leaves to tell her brother. To avenge his sister’s distress, Ravana abducts Sita and carries her off to his kingdom named as Lanka. Rama and Lakshmana get help from monkey God Hanuman to save Sita. A fierce battle is fought between Ravana and Rama. Thus Ravana is beheaded and gets defeated, and Sita is rescued.

Mahabharata: As per the tale from the epic Mahabharata, the Pandavas lose their kingdom in the game of gambling against Kauravas. So, they are exiled from their territory and had to spend twelve years in the forest and one year in disguise. Since nobody can see them and know their identities, they hid their holy and powerful weapons under the Shami tree. After the year ended, they arrived back and took their weapons and worshipped Goddess Durga. They used these weapons in the war against Kauravas and emerged victoriously.

Demon Mahishasura: Mahishasura was known to be an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. So, to please him, Mahishasura observed meditation for many years. Lord Shiva was pleased by his devotion and granted him magical and superpowers which were unbeatable. But, Lord Shiva told him that he would be killed only by a woman. The demon started feeling invincible and harassing people who worshipped other Gods besides him. The gods were terrified and pleaded the trinity of God-Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh to find a solution.

Hence they created Goddess Durga to kill the demon. Her beauty was divine and angel-like that’s why the devil madly fell for her and wished to marry her. She accepted his proposal under one condition that he has to win a battle against her. He agreed. The battle lasted for nine days, and o tenth day he was killed by Goddess Durga.

North India: In Northern India, the festival holds a great significance as it signifies good over evil. The Ramayana is depicted through stage plays, drama and theatre ten days before the festival. South India: In Tamil Nadu, the nine days are considered to be holy and prosperous. The entire nine days is dedicated to the three principal deities. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped for the first three days to bless them with wealth. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped the next three days to seek knowledge and art, and lastly, Goddess Durga is worshipped to seek Shakti (energy). Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashmi or Dasara , is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India, falling right after Durga Puja. Since time immemorial, people have been celebrating this divine occasion by immersing clay statues of major hindu deities into the river. These deities include Durga Saraswati, Lakshmi, Ganesha and Kartekeya. These deities are immersed in water to bid them farewell.

दशहरा का अर्थ - दशहरा शब्द दो हिंदी शब्दों ‘दस' और 'हारा 'से मिलकर बना है, जहाँ 'दस' गणिता के अंक दस (10) और हारा शब्द 'सत्यानाश/पराजित' का सूचक है। इसलिए यदि इन दो शब्दों को जोड़ दिया जाए तो 'दशहरा' बनता है, जो उस दिन का प्रतीक है जब दस सिर वाले दुष्ट रावण का भगवान राम ने वध किया था।

दशहरा समारोह - पूरे देश में दशहरा का पर्व बड़े ही उत्साह और धूमधाम के साथ मनाया जाता है। भारत में विभिन्न संस्कृतियां होने के बावजूद, यह किसी भी तरह से इस त्योहार के उत्साह को प्रभावित नहीं करती है। दशहरा/विजयदशमी के पूरे त्योहार में सभी का उत्साह और जोश एक समान रहता है।

रावण दहन - रामायण में कथित छंद का पालन करते हुए, वे रावण, मेघनाद और कुंभकर्ण जैसे तीन बड़े राक्षसों के विशाल आकार के पुतले बनाए जाते हैं। इसके बाद पुतलों को जलाने के लिए उनमे विस्फोटक पदार्थ भरा जाता है और जमकर आतिशबाजी की जाती है। इस दौरान एक आदमी भगवान राम की भूमिका निभाता है और जलाने के लिए पुतलों पर आग लगे हुए तीर चलाता है। लोग आमतौर पर किसी मुख्य अतिथि को भगवान राम की भूमिका निभाने और उस पुतले को जलाने के लिए आमंत्रित करते हैं। यह आयोजन हजारों दर्शकों के मौजूदगी में खुले मैदान में सुरक्षा को ध्यान में रख कर किया जाता है।

रूपरेखा : प्रस्तावना – दशहरे से संबंधित पौराणिक कथाएँ – यह त्योहार मनाने का ढंग – दशहरा त्योहार का महत्व – उपसंहार।

हमारे देश एक त्योहारों का देश है। दशहरा हमारा एक गौरवपूर्ण त्योहार है। यह आश्विन मास में शुक्ल पक्ष की दशमी को मनाया जाता है। शरद ऋतु के स्वच्छ और मोहक वातावरण में यह त्योहार भारत के जनजीवन को आनंद और उत्साह से भर देता है।

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार इसी दिन श्रीराम ने लंका के राजा रावण पर विजय प्राप्त की थी। इस विजय की खुशी सारे देश में मनाई गई थी। इसी दिन की स्मृति में विजयादशमी या दशहरे का त्योहार मनाया जाता है। यह भी मान्यता है कि पांडवों के अज्ञातवास के दौरान इसी दिन अर्जुन ने शमी वृक्ष पर रखा अपना धनुष उतारकर दुर्योधन की सेना को भगाया था और राजा विराट की अपहृत गायों को छुड़ाया था।

मंगल कार्यों का प्रारंभ करने के लिए दशहरे का दिन बहुत शुभ माना जाता है। इस दिन लोग अपने घरों और दुकानों के दरवाजों को तोरणों से सजाते हैं। लोग अपने औजारों और कल-कारखानों की पूजा करते हैं। किसानों के जीवन में दशहरा नए रंग भर देता है। दशहरे के बाद ही वे रबी की फसल बोने की तैयारी करते हैं। दशहरे के पूर्व नौ दिनों तक सारे देश में रामलीला का आयोजन किया जाता है। दशहरे के दिन रामलीला समाप्त होती है और मेघनाद, कुंभकर्ण और रावण के पुतले जलाए जाते हैं। इस प्रकार दशहरा बुराई पर भलाई की तथा अधर्म पर धर्म की विजय का प्रतीक है। इसीलिए इस त्योहार को ‘विजयादशमी’ कहते हैं।

आजकल लोग दशहरे के महत्व को भूलकर बाह्य आडंबर को ही प्रधानता देने लगे हैं। इस दिन कुछ लोग शराब पीते हैं और जुआ खेलते हैं। दशहरे जैसे पवित्र पर्व को सुंदर ढंग से मनाना चाहिए। अपने हृदय को स्वधर्म, स्वदेशप्रेम, बलिदान, तपस्या, दान और वीरता जैसे उत्तम भावों से भर देना ही इस त्योहार को मनाने का सही तरीका है।

सचमुच, विजयादशमी हमारा राष्ट्रीय, ऐतिहासिक, धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक पर्व है। दशहरे का त्योहार हमें धर्म, न्याय और मानवता की रक्षा करने तथा हर शुभ कार्य में विजयी बनने का संदेश देता है।

President Biden has repeatedly and rightfully described the stakes in this November’s presidential election as nothing less than the future of American democracy.

Donald Trump has proved himself to be a significant jeopardy to that democracy — an erratic and self-interested figure unworthy of the public trust. He systematically attempted to undermine the integrity of elections. His supporters have described, publicly, a 2025 agenda that would give him the power to carry out the most extreme of his promises and threats. If he is returned to office, he has vowed to be a different kind of president, unrestrained by the checks on power built into the American political system.

Mr. Biden has said that he is the candidate with the best chance of taking on this threat of tyranny and defeating it. His argument rests largely on the fact that he beat Mr. Trump in 2020. That is no longer a sufficient rationale for why Mr. Biden should be the Democratic nominee this year.

At Thursday’s debate, the president needed to convince the American public that he was equal to the formidable demands of the office he is seeking to hold for another term. Voters, however, cannot be expected to ignore what was instead plain to see: Mr. Biden is not the man he was four years ago.

The president appeared on Thursday night as the shadow of a great public servant. He struggled to explain what he would accomplish in a second term. He struggled to respond to Mr. Trump’s provocations. He struggled to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his lies, his failures and his chilling plans. More than once, he struggled to make it to the end of a sentence.

Mr. Biden has been an admirable president. Under his leadership, the nation has prospered and begun to address a range of long-term challenges, and the wounds ripped open by Mr. Trump have begun to heal. But the greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election.
