Assessment of Listening and Speaking, or ASL, is introduced as part of the curriculum for classes 11 and 12  in CBSE schools to evaluate students’ listening, speaking, and communication skills in the English language.

The growth of industries has given rise to the problem of proper disposal of waste material of the industries. Many a times, the waste products of these industries contain poisonous elements which if disposed without being properly treated, pollute the rivers and other water bodies. Thus, we face the problem of water pollution.

The poisonous water and waste product of the factories mingles with the water bodies and poisons them. Resultantly, the aquatic life gets affected. Fish die, disturbing the ecological balance. The water too is rendered useless which can neither be used for drinking or washing. This also results in the reduction of the area of water bodies. Such a situation arises when non-degradable products are dumped on fallow land or on the banks of rivers and sea shores.

Waste materials such as plastics, polythene, bottles etc cause land pollution and render soil infertile. Moreover, dumping of dead bodies of men and animals, washing of clothes and utensils too add to the problem. In recent surveys, Sabarmati river in Gujarat, Yamuna and Ganga rivers have been found to be excessively polluted. Yamuna has been described as an ‘Open Drain’.

Another major problem of pollution is the air that we breathe in being polluted by the smoke pouring out of chimneys and automobiles. No doubt, air pollution takes place even by volcanoes, cyclones, forest fires etc. But human activities are more responsible for causing air pollution. Gases like CO 2 , CO, SO 2 , are emitted which mix with air and cause great harm to the human body, flora and fauna.

The use of dry farm waste, dry grass, leaves and coal used as domestic fuels in our villages also produce harmful gases. Acid rain occurs due to excess of SO 2 in the air. The most tragic incident of air pollution is the Bhopal Gas Tragedy when the dangerous Methyl Isocyanide was emitted from Union Carbide Fertiliser Factory in 1984 which killed thousands of men, women and children, and rendered thousands of others handicapped.

Fire crackers, nuclear explosions, air conditioners, refrigerators, organic solvents, pesticides etc also contribute significantly in polluting air. Air pollution not only causes various kinds of allergies, respiratory problems and other health problems but also affects the vegetation, animal life and the environment. The soot which contains high concentration of hydrocarbons proves very harmful for monuments like the Taj Mahal.

Another very subtle form of pollution is noise pollution. Technology has given us comfort along with a cacophony of harsh and unharmonious sounds. This problem is extremely severe in big towns and cities. The maddening horns, loud speakers, music systems etc cause metabolic, hearing and other kinds of disorders. Noise pollution may also lead to a nervous breakdown or madness. Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) recently revealed that even silence zones, such as hospitals, schools and residential areas are suffering from high decibels of sound.

Thus, we see that there are various kinds of pollutions which need to be checked in time. Problems like ozone depletion, global warming, greenhouse effect, change in climatic and weather conditions, melting of glaciers etc have arisen due to pollution. Strict and serious measures should be taken to control it. Industrial waste should be properly treated in special treatment plants before letting it flow into the water bodies or dumping it. The pollution department of Farrukhabad issued directives to close all textile dyeing units, polluting the Ganga river.

Use of organic manures should be encouraged instead of chemical fertilisers to prevent soil pollution. Planting of trees should be encouraged and cutting down of green trees should be strictly checked. Unleaded petrol should be used in vehicles. The directions of the Supreme Court to manufacture cars as per Euro I and Euro II norms should be strictly enforced.

Air pollution is one of the major challenges faced by humanity in recent times. In simpler terms, it can be defined as the mixing of external harmful gases and particles in the atmosphere. Such dangerous gases mix with the air we breathe, which ultimately passes into our bodies through inhalation and causes respiratory disorders and death.

Have you ever heard the term ‘pollutants’? Pollutants are the substances that cause pollution. There are mainly two types of air pollutants – one is the primary pollutant, and the other one is the secondary pollutant. Primary pollutants are the substances that directly cause air pollution. For example, Sulphur dioxide discharged from industries. It requires no other substance to react and produce pollution. The secondary pollutants are the substances formed by the combination and reaction of the primary pollutants. We are all familiar with the substance – ‘smog’, right? Smog, formed by the mixing up of smoke and fog, is a perfect example of a secondary pollutant. To eradicate air pollution from our planet, we have to control the production of pollutants. For our better future, let’s join hands – to limit the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, avoid unwanted plastic usage, stop using personal vehicles to travel shorter distances, use clean energy resources like wind, solar, and geothermal energies, manage industrial wastes effectively, minimise the use of fire products, try to follow the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, and conserve and plant more trees. Other than all these, there are numerous measures that can be taken to reduce air pollution. The foremost thing is to be a responsible human being. Realise that protecting our home is never a duty but our responsibility.

‘Air Pollution in Delhi’ has been a grave concern for a long time now. But still, there has been no solution to this problem. Delhi is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Delhi has been ranked as the world’s worst pollution hotspot. The magnitude of pollutants present in the ‘Capital of India’ is massive. Contaminated air present in the atmosphere is causing devastating impacts on the health of the individuals and the environment. It is shocking to perceive the truth that the quality of air in Delhi is six times more polluted than the quality of air that is safe for human beings.

Do you know which are the 30 worst polluted cities in the world? It is really shocking to find that nearly 20 cities on the list are in India. Population explosion is one of the major reasons responsible for air pollution. As per the records, the number of people living in cities has increased dramatically over these years. There is a rise of about 25 per cent in the total population, making it hard for the nation to control pollution. Some of the main sources of air pollution in Delhi include the exhaustion of gases by vehicles, open waste mismanagement and burning, discharge of wastes from industries, combustion of fuels for cooking, etc. Apart from all these above-mentioned sources, the smoke and contaminants discharged during a public festival is also a major contributor to air pollution.

COVID19 pandemic has taught us many lessons in our lives. One such lesson is that it made us realise that the intensity of pollution can be controlled if people are ready to act responsibly for preserving nature. So let us plan and act together for a better future.

Air pollution causes an imbalance of gases in the atmosphere, and global warming is one of the aftereffects of such loss of balance. As we all know, our atmosphere is well balanced with different gases in it. A slight variation in the arrangement of these gases is enough for the disintegration of the balance of our ecosystem. Greenhouse gases act as pollutants and result in the contamination of the air. It traps the heat produced by the sun inside our planet and ultimately results in the global temperature rise.

Other than global warming, the catastrophic effects of air pollution include acid rain, depletion of the ozone layer, loss of ecosystem, respiratory diseases, increase in infant mortality rate, extinction of wild species, drought and so on. So the responsibility to maintain the balance of a certain percentage of gases in the atmosphere is ours. For our survival, it has to be controlled.

“Polluting the air is even more foolish when it is done through a fire that is fuelled by the trunk or branches of a tree.” These are the words said by Mokokoma Mokhonoana, an author from South Africa. It’s high time to stop our irresponsible behaviour towards our mother nature. So let’s join hands for a fresh and safe future.

Water Pollution 

Air and water are two most essential ingredients necessary for the existence of life. Air is unlimited. But there is limitation of fresh water, required for the human beings’ consumption. So, there is need to conserve water, by its judicious use and by protecting it from the pollutants. Our water resources are depleting very fast. We need to take action. It has been predicted that the future wars would be fought due to water problem.

All around the world, countries are fighting to keep their water clean. Whether it’s streams, rivers, lakes, or the ocean, countries have taken great measures to maintain a high quality of water for both human consumption and as a key component to the environment. It is the contamination of water by foreign matter such as micro-organisms, chemicals, and industrial or other wastes, or sewage. Such matter deteriorates the quality of the water and renders it unfit for its intended uses.. We deal with the pollution problems and then decide on ways to clean it up. This valuable resource is the key to survival. Both plants and animals depend on water for their growth, so the water must be kept clean. The major contributors to water pollution can be classified in three categories, industrial, agricultural and municipal.

Examples of industrial wastes that can contaminant bodies of water are oil spills, acid rain, and waste runoff from industrial buildings and factories. Oil spills, even though they do not happen that often, can spill millions of gallons of its crude oil cargo into the ocean causing long-term damage. The oil spreads out over the surface of the water, creating a deadly coating. It kills fish and animals and washes on shores polluting the beaches, shutting them down to the public. Once the oil has contaminated the water, immediate action must be taken to clean it out of the water. The most common procedure is to contain the oil with oil absorbent plastic booms and then skim the oil off the top of the water.

Waste or industrial runoff from factories can pollute streams that are near the place of discharge. Oils, inorganic minerals, and chemical compounds are the primary types of waste runoff. In the case of industrial runoff, there are three ways the water can be treated to solve the pollution problem before it ever reaches the water source. First, control over the discharge can take place at the point of generation within the plant itself. Second, the polluted water can be sent to water treatment plants before it is released into the surrounding water sources. Third, the waste water can be I treated within the plant and recycled again, or treated in the plant and released.

Another form of industrial waste that contributes to water ” pollution is acid rain. Acid rain is a product of industries burning coal. The burning of coal produces sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide, and when these chemicals combine with the earth’s atmosphere it forms acid rain The Northeastern part of the United States has the worst acid rain levels in the world. More specific, the states with the highest concentration are Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and some boarding parts of Canada and New England area. The falling acid rain can destroy plants and animals in several different ways. The acidification of a lake, river, or stream because of the high acidic levels in the water kills algae. Since algae are the main source of food, for many species of fish, they will also suffer from the high acid levels. Acid rain also soaks into ground and dissolves nutrients from the soil. When the plants call upon these nutrients to grow, the absence kills the vegetation. Over a short period of time plants 11 begin to die, harming surrounding animal life. The second main category is agricultural pollution. This type of pollution occurs when ‘erosion of crop land dispenses sediments into nearby streams, affecting the clarity of the water and killing the food source of the fish. Another form of agricultural pollution is field run- off. It Is caused when a farmer spreads animal wastes and fertilizers onto fields to replenish the lost nutrients, the waste contains high levels of nitrogen. This nitrogen, an oxygen-robbing agent, will deprive the water of its oxygen, causing harm to the plants living in and near the water. The third major source of contamination is municipal wastes. These wastes include household wastes that run into the water treatments plants. A three-step process is implemented to clean the waste water. The first step is to remove   all the solids and then screen out any smaller particles. The second is the oxidation of organic matter that is then filtered off. The third step uses nitrogen removal and other methods like granular filtration and carbon absorption. The oil spills in the Persian Gulf in 1983, during the Iran-Iraq conflict, and in 1991, during the Gulf War, when up to 8 million barrels were released, resulted in enormous damage to the entire area, especially to the marine life.
