If the human nutrition community has learned anything from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, it is that many of our advances in preventing or understanding the double burden of malnutrition are far more tenuous than we ever imagined ( 1 ). Seeing the prevalence of food insecurity continue to increase while witnessing “parallel pandemics” of diet-related chronic diseases and infectious diseases continue almost unabated is of serious concern ( 2 , 3 ). Although a great number of significant advances in human nutrition have occurred in the past 30–50 years, we remain humbled in the face of deadly diseases that are exacerbated by the ever increasing “inflammatory” diet ( 4 , 5 ). Thus, more field studies of diets, nutrient and energy metabolisms, body compositions, and maternal-infant health are urgently needed. To address this, The Journal of Nutrition issues a call for papers for studies using nuclear techniques, including stable isotopes, to demonstrate how the use of these techniques can contribute to a better understanding of underlying issues of complex nutritional problems and how investigators across boundaries and economic differences work together to improve our understanding of human nutrition and health.

Use of Nuclear and Stable Isotope Techniques in Nutrition Research

Nuclear and stable isotope techniques can be used to study a number of important nutrition outcomes, such as protein or energy metabolisms, body compositions, vitamin and mineral metabolisms, and breastfeeding practices. For example, the doubly labeled water (DLW) method is a well-validated technique to measure total daily energy expenditure in the free-living state using isotopically labeled water ( 2 H 2 18 O) ( 6 ). Experimentally, the DLW method has a relatively low burden for participants and can also be used as an indirect estimate of total energy intake ( 7 ). In addition, either of the 2 isotopes can be used to estimate total body water and calculate body composition, such as body fat mass and fat-free mass. Likewise, providing breastfeeding women a dose of deuterium can allow for maternal body composition assessments, along with measuring breast milk intake ( 8 ). A newly developed dual stable isotope tracer technique can help determine protein quality and amino acid digestion from foods ( 9 , 10 ). This is of particular importance in populations that rely mostly on plant-based protein sources. The digestibility data gathered from this method can be used to better understand amino acid and protein requirements and protein quality in the context of nutrition transition, as well as to aid in the search for alternative protein sources.

Micronutrient bioavailability can be assessed using stable isotopes of iron and zinc, which are important in the context of dietary diversification, food fortification, and supplementation programs ( 11 ). Vitamin A labelled with a stable isotope allows for the assessment of total body stores of vitamin A both in individuals and within a given population across the entire spectrum of vitamin A status ( 11 , 12 ). By assessing whether individuals or population groups are getting too little or too much vitamin A, decisions on when it is appropriate to modify or withdraw ongoing vitamin A interventions can be made. Carbon-13 breath tests have become useful, noninvasive tools to measure gastrointestinal function and to monitor pharmacological and nutritional interventions. The exhaled breath can provide important information about biochemical, physiological, and pathological processes within the body, such as in the urea breath test to detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach ( 13 ).

International Atomic Energy Agency and Nutrition Research Using Nuclear Applications

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supports the use of nuclear techniques, including stable isotope techniques, in nutrition assessments to develop and evaluate interventions aimed at addressing malnutrition in all its forms ( 14 ). These techniques are being used to assess nutrient bioavailability, carbohydrate and protein digestion, vitamin A body stores, body compositions, energy expenditures, bone health, breastfeeding practices, and how adverse environmental exposures impact nutritional status. The IAEA’s work has a strong focus on early life nutrition, the prevention and management of noncommunicable diseases, and diet quality. Besides building capacity in the application of well-established nuclear techniques for nutrition assessments through its Technical Cooperation Programme, the IAEA supports Coordinated Research Projects that optimize and adapt existing nuclear techniques or assist in the development of new nuclear nutrition techniques to better understand and address emerging and complex nutritional issues.

Need for Interdisciplinary Research Using Nuclear Technique

As the world moves forward following the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a renewed and urgent need to study human nutrition, now in the context of how to prevent another “parallel pandemic,” especially in low-resource communities and countries. Research in human nutrition will advance more rapidly if interdisciplinary studies, either through clinical or cohort approaches, use a combination of nuclear and related techniques to accurately measure nutritional status along with studies of specific nutrient metabolisms, thus allowing for multiple questions to be answered at the same time.

Call for Papers

The Journal of Nutrition invites submission of high-quality, original research manuscripts, reviews, perspectives, and systematic reviews with meta-analyses on studies that have used nuclear techniques (including stable isotopes) to advance human nutrition research. Papers must be submitted by 15 September 2022 to be considered for this special collection. To be included in the collection, select the appropriate Article Type for your manuscript. Nature Microbiology and Nature Communications are issuing a joint call for papers to highlight research focused on microbiome and nutrition.

Every year each Nature research journal Editor reads many hundreds of manuscript submissions, and in so doing gains a bird’s-eye view of research trends. One of the most rewarding aspects of being an Editor at a selective research journal is that we can nurture, foster and help to grow emergent or multi-disciplinary research communities, by publishing key papers that shape those fields.

One way we can highlight fields is to convene collections of content that enable interested researchers, be they policymakers, educators or clinicians, to readily access the very best research and commentary across the breadth of a topic in one place. To support the growing, interdisciplinary community of microbiome researchers that are interested in nutrition, we are launching a joint call for papers in microbiome and nutrition, led by our Senior Editors who focus on microbiome research, Emily White from Nature Microbiolog y and Javier Martinez-Vesga from Nature Communications .

Since the 1800s we’ve been told that ‘we are what we eat’. Nowadays we understand that nutrition is multifaceted and highly complex. Nutrition is of vital importance to human and animal health. This broad discipline attracts practitioners in medicine, dietetics and clinical nutrition, public health, food policy and sustainable development. Microbiologists form an important part of this diverse network of researchers. Fermented foods have been produced by humans for more than 10,000 years, and interest in probiotic supplements for health or to treat diseases has been magnified by the multitude of links between the composition of gut or skin microbiomes and disease. It’s only more recently, however, that research into the roles of the gut microbiota in human and animal nutrition has been reported. For example, microbiologists have been disentangling the effects of the gut microbiota on nutrition in rodent models of human diseases, in human cohorts, and in livestock and poultry including sheep, chickens and pigs. To mark the importance of microbiomes in nutrition, World Microbiome Day 2023 has the theme microbes and food .

We are interested in submissions of primary basic and clinical research, systematic reviews, policy and best practice papers, and computational tools that tackle any aspect of nutrition relevant to microbiologists, including the microbial metabolism of food and dietary components, human and animal health and disease related to nutrition, including overweight and obesity and eating disorders, microbial foods and microbiome-based dietary interventions. All submissions we select for further consideration will be peer reviewed, and published papers from Nature Microbiology and Nature Communications will be prominently highlighted on our joint Collection page.

You can submit to our Collection by using the online submissions systems for either of our journals. Research papers will be read by one of our Editors, who will send selected articles out for peer review at either Nature Microbiology or Nature Communications . Published articles will be featured in the Collection and on our journal homepages. Editors from Nature Microbiology and Nature Communications will, with your permission, discuss any submissions that don’t meet the criteria for either title with a view to finding the best-suited journal for your research from across the Nature Portfolio. For example, there are microbiology Editors at our Communications journals, Nature partner journals (including npj Biofilms and Microbiomes ) and Scientific Reports , which means that, with your permission and our transfer system, all articles submitted to the ‘Microbiome & Nutrition’ Collection will receive a recommended journal suggestion, as long as the science is sound.

We hope that a curated set of content will help to showcase diverse interests in nutrition research, serve to raise awareness of work carried out by microbiome researchers to the broader nutrition field and facilitate partnerships and collaborations among researchers from different communities. Our Collection will be accompanied by commissioned content including Reviews, Comments and News & Views, for example.

Our Microbiome & Nutrition Collection will remain open for six months. Submissions are welcomed on a rolling basis. We’re excited to read and publish submissions in this important area.

Using digital technologies to strengthen food fortification and dietary diversification

Posted on December 8, 2021

Sign up for our Newsletter

A sustainable food system is at the core of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that call for major transformations in agriculture and food systems to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition by 2030 [1] .

The elements of food systems, nutrition, and health are intricately linked. To achieve the SDGs, the global food system needs to be reshaped to ensure the inclusiveness of low-income and marginalized populations and guarantee the capacity to provide healthy and nutritious diets to everyone.

Food-based nutrition interventions have a strong potential to enhance food security by improving food production and availability, processing, supply, and commercialization, all while facilitating its access and consumption [2] for improved nutrition outcomes. Food fortification (including large-scale food fortification and biofortification) and dietary diversification are interventions that can modify diet quality and diversity to address multiple micronutrient deficiencies and possibly help reduce the risk of diet-related non-communicable diseases [3] .

Rapidly evolving and expanding technologies offer key opportunities to address this global grand challenge and. in doing so, create positive impacts on the food system and environment – and ultimately the global population.

With the incredible growth of digital technologies over the last decade, there is tremendous potential to strengthen and improve initiatives and outcomes, especially in low-resource settings and communities which may have been previously unreachable. In fact, several development sectors have already made efforts to incorporate digital technologies into their programs, including health, agriculture, education, and others.

While there is little literature available detailing how digital technologies can be leveraged across food-system nutrition interventions to improve nutritional outcomes, it is evident that its integration is increasing worldwide as it can improve effectiveness and efficiency across the entire food supply chain.

The Unit of Multisectoral Action in Food Systems, Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, World Health Organization (WHO), and Nutrition International are jointly exploring the potential of leveraging digital technologies to strengthen food-system nutrition interventions for food fortification and dietary diversification for improved nutrition outcomes. The overall objective of this collaboration is to explore the potential for digital technologies to strengthen food-system interventions for food fortification and dietary diversification that address undernutrition and/or overweight and obesity.

Nutrition International and WHO will co-commission six review papers on the use of digital technologies to strengthen food fortification and dietary diversification. The papers call for review of only published evidence/information.

Get connected to the Library’s large and diverse collections related to science, technology, and business through our Inside Adams Blog. This blog also features upcoming events and collection displays, classes and orientations, new research guides, and more.

The Library of Congress is completing a project to update and modernize Library reading room websites. As a part of the process, “The Technical Reports and Standards Collection” is in the process of being updated and migrated to this new platform. The process has not yet been completed and the guide remains subject to change.

Researchers with questions about the collection are encouraged to contact a science or business librarian using the Ask-a-Librarian: Science and Technical Reports or Ask a Librarian: Business online form, by phone, at (202) 707-5639, or in person, at the reference desk, in the Science and Business Reading Room, on the fifth floor of the Library's John Adams Building.

Technical Reports

nutrition research call for papers

Technical reports are designed to quickly alert researchers to recent findings and developments in scientific and technical research. These reports are issued for a variety of purposes:

  • to communicate results or describe progress of a research project
  • to convey background information on an emerging or critical research topic
  • to provide lists of instructions or procedures for current practices
  • to determine the feasibility of a technology and recommend if research should be continued (and how to evaluate any further progress made)
  • to detail technical specifications (materials, functions, features, operation, market potential, etc.)

Technical reports first appeared in the early part of the 20th century. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) published a series of professional papers beginning in 1902, and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) issued its first report in 1915. But, the format gained importance during World War II, emerged in the postwar era, and remains, to this day, a major tool for reporting progress in science and technology, as well as in education, business, and social sciences research. The names given to series of these publications vary, but are often such generic terms as "technical reports," "working papers," "research memoranda," "internal notes," "occasional papers," "discussion papers" or "gray (or grey) literature." In the physical and natural sciences, "technical report" seems to be the preferred designation. For reports dealing with business, education, and the social sciences, on the other hand, the terms "working paper," "occasional paper," and "memorandum" are often the designations of choice. Other, more specific types of technical reports include "preprints" and "reprints." Preprints generally are versions of papers issued by researchers before their final papers are published by commercial publishers. Preprints allow researchers to communicate their findings quickly, but usually have not been peer reviewed. Reprints are typically released to heighten awareness of the research being conducted in a particular field or at a single institution. The term, "technical report" encompasses all of these designations.

Since many of these publications are intended to provide just a temporary snapshot of current research in a particular field or topic, they may contain the some of following distinctions:

  • Rapid communication of new research results
  • Dissemination to a targeted audience.
  • Detailed methodologies, in order to facilitate review of research results by others
  • No peer review, though there is often another selection process for publication (grant, contract, or institutional affiliation)
  • Not published by typical commercial publishers (instead reports are issued or sponsored by government agencies, professional associations, societies, councils, foundations, laboratories, universities, etc.)
  • Corporate authorship, where present, is typically emphasized

Unfortunately, uncertain availability, limited print runs, and decentralized distribution patterns with little bibliographic information are also often characteristics of this literature.

The Federal Government issues many different types of technical reports. An overview of some of these can be found in a May 2001 GAO report, " Information Management: Dissemination of Technical Reports ." Government issued or sponsored reports contain an additional characteristic - they may be subject to distribution restrictions linked to their classification status. Although references to classified reports may be found in technical reports literature, the security status or limited distribution of reports may make them unavailable to the general public and to the Library as well, as the Library holds only titles in the public domain. Those interested in locating such materials can consult the U.S. Department of Justice's Freedom of Information Act  site for guidance in obtaining these reports.

To enable them to be identified and located, technical reports are assigned report codes by agencies or organizations involved in their production or distribution. These codes may be referred to as "accession numbers," "agency report series numbers," "contract numbers," "grant numbers" or by other names, and include dates and individual report numbers. Typically, reports are assigned multiple codes and these codes help to identify the sponsoring agency, the organization performing the research or the organization disseminating the report.  Most technical reports held by the Library of Congress are not cataloged, and, for these reports, one or more report codes is required for Library staff to check the collections for a report or to locate and retrieve it. For more information about the current Standard Technical Report Number format (STRN) see ANSI/NISO Z39.23- 1997 (S2015) Standard Technical Reports Number Format and Creation .

Standards are specifications which define products, methods, processes or practices, and are known to have existed as early as 7000 B.C., when cylindrical stones were used as units of weight in Egypt. According to  Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-119 , as revised in 2016, the term "standard" or "technical standard" refers to:

  • common and repeated use of rules, conditions, guidelines or characteristics for products or related processes and production methods, and related management systems practices;
  • the definition of terms; classification of components; delineation of procedures; specification of dimensions, materials, performance, designs, or operations; measurement of quality and quantity in describing materials, processes, products, systems, services, or practices; test methods and sampling procedures; or descriptions of fit and measurements of size or strength; and
  • terminology, symbols, packaging, marking or labeling requirements as they apply to a product, process, or production method.

Technical standards are not "professional standards of personal conduct; or institutional codes of ethics." (p. 15).

Standards are typically generated by governments or by professional associations and organizations interested in or affected by the subject matter of particular standards. For example, U.S. government standards mandated by the  Fair Packaging & Labeling Act (FPLA)  have standardized the labeling required for packaging in which consumer commodities is sold. Standards set the basis for determining consistent and acceptable minimum levels of reliability and safety, and are adhered to either voluntarily or as mandated by law. For a more complete overview, see the NIST report  " The ABC's of Standards Activities " by Maureen A. Breitenberg (2009).

The Library of Congress standards collection includes military and other federal standards, industry standards, and a few older international standards from Russia, China, and South Africa. Material from the collection is available in various formats, including digital, print, and microform materials. The majority of the Library's standards collection held in the Science Section's Technical Reports and Standards Collection. The collection remains largely uncatalogued, and as a result, most items from this collection are not discoverable in the Library's online catalog. Inquires on Library holdings can be sent to the Science Section using the Science and Technical Reports Ask-a-Librarian form . Some standards, however, are housed in the Library's general collections and discoverable by searching the  online catalog -- the ASTM standards are one example. Other standards are in custody of appropriate specialized research centers, such as the Law Library , which maintains  OSHA standards and some building codes.

Title: hybridrag: integrating knowledge graphs and vector retrieval augmented generation for efficient information extraction.

Abstract: Extraction and interpretation of intricate information from unstructured text data arising in financial applications, such as earnings call transcripts, present substantial challenges to large language models (LLMs) even using the current best practices to use Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) (referred to as VectorRAG techniques which utilize vector databases for information retrieval) due to challenges such as domain specific terminology and complex formats of the documents. We introduce a novel approach based on a combination, called HybridRAG, of the Knowledge Graphs (KGs) based RAG techniques (called GraphRAG) and VectorRAG techniques to enhance question-answer (Q&A) systems for information extraction from financial documents that is shown to be capable of generating accurate and contextually relevant answers. Using experiments on a set of financial earning call transcripts documents which come in the form of Q&A format, and hence provide a natural set of pairs of ground-truth Q&As, we show that HybridRAG which retrieves context from both vector database and KG outperforms both traditional VectorRAG and GraphRAG individually when evaluated at both the retrieval and generation stages in terms of retrieval accuracy and answer generation. The proposed technique has applications beyond the financial domain

RAISE 2025: Requirements engineering for AI-powered SoftwarE

Call for papers.

The rapid rise of Foundation Models like GPT-4 has transformed AI-powered software (AIware), presenting unprecedented opportunities and challenges in Requirements Engineering (RE). This workshop addresses the need to rethink and enhance RE practices to keep pace with AIware’s capabilities. AIware democratizes software creation via natural language prompts, requiring new RE strategies to ensure these systems are fair, transparent, and trustworthy.

RAISE 2025 brings together researchers working on requirements engineering, Software engineering for AI, Human-centered software engineering, and AIware. The aim is to enable cross-pollination and knowledge sharing between those software engineering communities across academia and industry to tackle a critical challenge of our time, engineering AI-powered systems that seemingly collaborate with humans, satisfy stakeholders’ needs, and align with society’s values.

RAISE 2025 provides a venue for researchers and practitioners to exchange and discuss trending views, ideas, state-of-the-art, work in progress, and scientific results highlighting aspects of requirements engineering for AIware. Specifically, RAISE 2025:

Brings together the greater community of researchers and practitioners in RE, SE4AI, AIware, and AI4SE in an interactive program that encourages discussion and scholarly debate on how to undertake RE for AIware from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Identifies and explores emerging and new research challenges in eliciting, modeling, analyzing, verifying, adapting, and aligning requirements for AIware for and by different researchers, with a variety of expertise and needs.

Generates a new research agenda, identifies topics of interest for this community, and how future editions of the workshop may explore these topics.

Outlines and deeply discusses changes to SE curriculum with the future of RE for AIware.

RAISE 2025 invites submissions for its inaugural workshop focused on rethinking Requirements Engineering (RE) in the context of AI-powered software (AIware). Key topics include:

  • Requirements as Code. Exploring how natural language prompts can effectively specify requirements for AIware, ensuring desired outcomes and avoiding negative impacts.
  • RE for AIware. Establishing new RE practices for the AIware lifecycle, including data and model alignment, cognitive architecture design, and performance engineering.
  • Dual Training of AI Agents and Software Makers. Investigating how to train software makers (i.e., to interact with AI agents and design AI agents to understand and meet user needs.
  • Collaboration Between AIware Agents and Humans. Understanding the interaction dynamics between humans and AIware to improve regulatory compliance, safety, security, and user experience.
  • Rethinking RE Curriculum. Redesigning RE education to prepare the next generation of engineers for the challenges of AIware development.

While these topics are of main interest, we welcome any relevant submissions in the area of RE for AIware.
