Image Resolution
There is an inverse relationship between print size and resolution (if you increase the print size the resolution decreases and vice-versa).
To get good results when inserting an image into a research poster, the image should be printed at a resolution of at least 200 pixels per inch (ppi) or 300dpi.
Images that look good online may not be high enough resolution to look good in print at the size you want them to be.
Copyright Concerns
If you use images from the web, make sure you are not breaking copyright. You can ask permission from the source or use images that are licensed as Creative Commons .
Creative Commons / Public Domain Images
- Creative Commons Search A tool to search multiple Creative Commons sites at once. Can limit to type of CC license. Searches images, audio and video
- Flickr - Creative Commons Flickr users may choose to allow others to use their photos under Creative Commons. Conduct a regular Flickr search, and then choose License: Creative Commons to find only those that have permision. You will often need to review the Creative Commons licensing to be sure you are using the photo appropriately.
- Flickr: The Commons A collective of institutions that have uploaded publicly held photography collections. Images found in Flickr Commons site have “No Known Copyright Restrictions."
- Google Images To filter your search to Creative Commons / Public Use images: Search Tools, Usage Rights, Labled for Noncommerical Reuse
- Citing creative commons images - best practices
Images - Library Resources
- Colourbox Colourbox offers over 4 million images and videos that can be used by students, faculty and employees of the University of Calgary for any non-commercial purpose. This includes presentations, web pages, assignments, and non-commercial publications. You must set up an account to download images. 30 free image downloads are permitted per month.

In general, use colours sparingly; use a maximum of 2 or 3.
Use contrasting colours to draw attention to specific text or areas of your poster.
- Adobe Color Chooser
- Paletton.com Also allows you to simulate colour-blindness - click "vision simulation".
- Coblis - Color Blindness Simulator Upload or drag-and-drop your image. Choose from several views.

Our laws come from the land, and our practices of granting rights and privileges is a process we were born with, that ties us to this land.
Piikani Elder Dr. Reg Crowshoe, Hon. LLD’01, Cultural Advisor at UCalgary
Basic Territorial Land Acknowledgement
The basic acknowledgement is recommended for the opening remarks at small, internally focused events, like meetings and small gatherings:
[Welcome to the University of Calgary]. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).
Standard Territorial Land Acknowledgement
The specific territorial acknowledgement is recommended for opening remarks at larger internal meetings or small public events:
The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).
Extended Territorial Land Acknowledgement
The extended territorial acknowledgement is recommended for opening remarks at large public events, such as University of Calgary Convocation, building openings and conferences.
The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
Pronunciation
Siksika is pronounced “Sik-sik-a” (please use the short i for both vowel sounds in pronunciation)
Piikani is pronounced “Pē-gun-ē” (please use the long e for both vowel sounds in pronunciation)
Kainai is pronounced “K ī -n ī” (please use the long i for both vowel sounds in pronunciation)
Tsuut’ina is pronounced “Soot’ ina” (Please use the long o and short i for the vowel sounds in pronunciation)
Chiniki is prounounced “Chin-i-kee” (Please use the long i for the last vowel sound and short i for the first two vowels)
