تحقیق عربی لفظ باب تفعیل سے مصدر ہے جس کا مادہ ح-ق-ق ہے۔ تحقیق کے معنی ہیں چھان بین، تلاش و جستجو اور دریافت کے، اس کی وضاحت یوں ہوسکتی ہے کہ ”حقائق کو دریافت کرنے اور ان کی تصدیق کرنے کا نام تحقیق ہے۔ اردو کے اہم محققین عبدالودود کے مطابق ”تحقیق کسی امر کو اس کی اصلی شکل میں دیکھنے کی کوشش ہے “ پروفیسر گیان چند کے مطابق یہ تعریف مانع نہیں وہ کہتے ہیں کہ قاضی صاحب کو تحقیق کی تعریف دو چند الفاظ میں اس طرح پڑھانے چاہیے تھے کہ ”جب کسی امر کی اصل شکل پوشیدہ یا مبہم ہو تو اس کی اصلی شکل کو دریافت کرنے کا عمل تحقیق ہے“ جمیل جالبی کا کہنا ہے کہ ”تحقیق در اصل تلاش اور جستجو کے ذریعے حقائق معلوم کرنے اور ان کی تصدیق کرنے کا نام ہے “

جمیل جالبی مزید ترقی کرتے ہوئے یہ بھی کہتے ہیں کہ ”تحقیق ایک ایسا عمل ہے جس سے آپ صحیح اور غلط میں امتیاز کرتے ہیں اور پھر صحیح کی مدد سے اپنی منزل کی طرف بڑھتے ہیں “ ڈاکٹر سید عبداللہ کے مطابق ”تحقیق کے لغوی معنی کسی شے کی حقیقت کا اثبات ہے۔ اصطلاحاً یہ ایک ایسے طرز مطالعہ کا نام ہے جس میں موجود مواد کے صحیح یاغلط کو بعض مسلمات کی روشنی میں پرکھا جاتا ہے “ اسی طرح جدید تحقیق کی تعریفات میں پروفیسر عبدالستار دلوی کا کہنا ہے کہ ”تحقیق کسی مسئلہ کے قابل اعتماد حل اور صحیح نتائج تک پہنچنے کا وہ عمل ہے جس میں ایک ایک منظم طریقۂ کار، حقائق کی تلاش و تجزیہ اور تفصیل کاری پوشیدہ ہوتی ہے “

تحقیق کی مذکورہ تعریفات سے ایک بات واضح ہوجاتی ہے کہ اصل تحقیق وہ ہے جو انسان کے اندر سے سوال بن کر ابھرے،غیر شعوری یا غیر ارادی کوئی ادبی شے یا ادب پارہ مل گیا تو وہ تحقیق کے مفہوم کے ضمن میں آنا ذرا کار دارد ہے۔کسی نئی دریافت میں یا پہلے سے دریافت شدہ حقائق میں مزید اضافہ ارادی اور شعوری طور پر ہونا چاہیے۔ جدید محققین کا یہ بھی ماننا ہے کہ حقیقت ایک ہی ہے، اس کی تعبیر مختلف ہے اور حقیقت تعبیر طلب ہوتی ہے اور تفسیر طلب ہوتی ہے۔ لہٰذا اپنے موضوع کی مناسبت سے تحقیق کا طریقہ کار طے ہوتا ہے۔

اب ہم بات کرتے ہیں کہ تحقیق کا بنیادی طریقہ کار کیا ہے اور وہ کس طرح اپنے سفر نظریات سے عملیات کی جانب شروع کرتی ہے۔ اس حوالے سے قاضی عبدالودود نے تحقیق کے لازمی اجزاء کو چار حصوں میں تقسیم کیا ہے؛

• 1. موضوع کا انتخاب
• 2. مواد کی فراہمی
• 3. پیرایہ اظہار
• 4. اخلاقیات

لیکن جدید محققین کے مطابق تحقیقی مراحل جو بہت ہی اہم ہیں جن کے وسیلہ سے ایک معیاری تحقیق وجود میں آ سکتی ہے وہ اس طرح ہیں:

• 1. تحقیق کا موضوع
• 3. مواد کی فراہمی
• 4. مطالعہ اور نوٹ لینا
• 5. مواد کی پرکھ اور حزم و اختیاط
• 6. مقالہ کی تصویر
• 7. زبان اور بیان

(1)تحقیق کا موضوع:

(1) تحقیق میں اہم شے یا مرکزی نقطہ موضوع کا انتخاب ہے۔اس میں سندی اور غیر سندی تحقیق کے لحاظ سے خیال رکھا جانا چاہیے۔ انتخابِ موضوع کے حوالے سے تین پہلوؤں پر غور کیا جانا چاہیے۔ اول: موضوع کیسا ہو۔ دوم: موضوع کیسا نہ ہو۔ سوم: موضوع کیوں کر تلاش کیا جائے۔

(١) سب سے پہلی بات تو یہ ہے کہ محقق کو موضوع سے دلچسپی ہونی چاہیے۔ موضوع محقق کے رجحان اور اس کے اختصاصی میدان کے مطابق ہو۔ مثلاً فکشن، شاعری، (شاعری میں عروض، بیان و معانی، یا صنائع، جدید ادب / بین العلومی وغیرہ وغیرہ۔ (٢) دوسری اہم بات یہ ہے کہ موضوع ایسا ہو کہ جس پر تحقیق کی جا سکے۔ نہ زیادہ وسیع ہو کہ سمیٹا نہ جا سکے اور نہ اتنا تنگ ہو کہ کھولا نہ جا سکے۔ (٣) تیسری ضروری بات یہ ہے کہ موضوع ایسا ہونا چاہئے کہ جس سے علم میں کچھ نہ کچھ اضافہ ہو۔ آجکل جامعات اور کلیات میں تعلقاتی تحقیق زیادہ ہو رہی ہے۔تحقیق کرنے والوں کو یہ اندیشہ رہتا ہے کہ ہمارے دنیا سے گزرنے کے بعد کہیں ہم ادبی طور پر واقع مر نہ جائیں، کیونکہ ان کی تخلیقات یا ادبی خدمات برائے نام ہوتی ہیں جو ان کے راہی عدم ہونے کے بعد ان کو کوئی نہ دیکھے گا اس لیے وہ اپنی زندگی میں ہی چاپلوسی وغیرہ کرکے خود پر تحقیق کے نام کا ایک غیر معتبر کام کروا لیتے ہیں۔ ایسے موضوعات ادبی تحقیق میں زہر ہلاہل کا کام کرتے ہیں۔

موضوع کے بعد اس کا عارضی خاکہ تحقیقی کام کو منظم طریقے سے اپنے اختتام تک لے جاتا ہے۔ خاکے سے مراد ہے” خاکہ مختلف تصورات کی تقسیم ترتیب اور باہمی رشتے کا نام ہے“ ڈاکٹر عندلیب شادانی کے مطابق ”خاکہ بنانے کے بعد ذہنی طور پر مقالہ کی ایک ہئیت متعین ہو جاتی ہے۔ اس نقش پر عمارت بنانا آسان ہے۔ اس سے فائدہ یہ ہوتا ہے کہ جب ابواب بندی ہو جاتی ہے تو موضوع کی حدود متعین ہو جاتی ہے اور موضوع کی مناسبت مواد اس میں شامل ہوجاتا ہے اور غیر ضروری، غیر اہم اور ربط و یاس سے تحقیق پاک ہو جاتی ہے۔

(3). مواد کی فراہمی:

ادبی مواد کئی قسم کا ہوتا ہے۔ بنیادی طور پر مواد کی دو قسمیں ہوتی ہیں۔ (١) اولین(Primary) اور ثانوی (Secondary) (١) داخلی اور خارجی

مفرد ادیب پر اگر تحقیق کی جائے تو اولین مواد زیرتحقیق ادیب کی جملہ تخلیقات اور دوسری تحریروں مثلاً مسودوں، ڈائری، خطوط وغیرہ پر مشتمل ہوتا ہے۔ ان کے علاوہ تاریخی دستاویزات، قانونی دستاویزات، طبی ریکارڈ، تعلیمی ریکارڈ، ملازمت کا ریکارڈ، ٹیپ ریکارڈ وغیرہ بھی اولین ماخذ ہے۔ بقیہ مواد ثانوی ہے۔داخلی اور خارجی مواد یا شہادت کا تعلق کسی متن سے ہوتا ہے۔داخلی مواد کسی مصنف کی نگارشات کے مشمولات ہوا کرتے ہیں بقیہ سب خارجی مواد ہے۔ ماخذی مواد کو بھی کئی قسموں میں بانٹا جا سکتا ہے جس کی تفصیل یہاں نہیں لکھی جا سکتی۔

(4). مطالعہ اور لوٹ لینا:

اس ضمن میں فراہم مواد کا مطالعہ کرنا ہے اور اپنے موضوع کی مناسبت سے نوٹ لینا ہے۔ لیکن کتابوں سے نوٹ لیتے وقت یہ خیال رکھنا ضروری ہے کہ آپ کو ایک نیا مقالہ، نئی کتاب لکھنی ہے۔اس لیے کہیں تحقیق دیگر کتابوں کی تلخیص نہ بن جائے۔

(5). مواد کی پرکھ اور حزم و احتیاط:

پروفیسر گیان چند جین لکھتے ہیں کہ ”یونان میں فلسفے کا ایک دبستان تحقیق کا تھا جس کا عقیدہ تھا کہ حقیقت تک پہنچنا ممکن نہیں۔ ایلٹک نے کہا ہے کہ اچھا محقق ہونے کے لئے اچھا مشکک ہونا ضروری ہے یعنی جب ہم مواد کو لیں تو خوب پر رکھ کر اور غیر جانبداری، تعصب، عقیدت سے اوپر اٹھ کر مواد کو دیکھیں اور پھر معروضی پیرائے میں اس سے نتیجے اخذ کریں۔ہر بات کو شک سے دیکھا جائے اور صرف تحقیقی اصولوں کی کسوٹی پر ہی اسے پر رکھ کر اپنے دلائل میں شامل کیا جانا چاہیے۔ گیان چند جین کے مطابق ”مواد کی فراہمی اور تسوید کے درمیان کی منزل ہے مواد کا جائزہ لینا یعنی تحقیق کا مرکزی کام یہی ہے، معتبر اور غیر معتبر کو الگ کرکے حقیقت تک رسائی حاصل کی جائے۔

(6). مقالے کی تسوید

مقالہ کو لکھنے کے جو تحقیق کا مقصود ہے، اس آخری عمل کی دو منزلیں ہوتی ہیں۔ (١) تسوید یعنی مقالے کا پہلا مسودہ تیار کرنا۔ (٢) تبئیض یعنی پہلے مسودے کی ضروری ترمیم و اصلاح کے ساتھ صاف نقل۔ اس کو نقل مبیضہ کہتے ہیں۔ مقالہ کن خطوط پر لکھا جائے یہ مقالہ نگار کی کی صواب دید پر منحصر ہے۔

(7). زبان اور بیان:

زبان ہمارے اظہار کا وسیلہ ہے۔ تحقیق میں جو ہمارا مفروضہ ہوتا ہے اور ٹھوس دلائل کے ذریعے تھیس (Thesis) کی منزل طے کرتا ہوا حقائق کی آخری دریافت تک آتا ہے۔ لہذا اس مفروضے، تھیسز اور دلائل کو واضح اور قطعی زبان میں ہونا چاہیے۔تحقیق میں تخلیقی زبان کی گنجائش نہیں ہے۔ اس میں محقق کی جو منشا ہے وہ بالکل صاف اور قطعی طور پر قارئین تک پہنچنی چاہیے۔یہاں اگر استعارتی رمزیہ یا مبہم زبان اور مبالغات کی زبان کا برتاؤ ہوا ہوگا تو تحقیق اپنا مقصد کھو دے گی کیونکہ کوئی واضح اور قطعی چیز قارئین پر واضح نہیں ہو گی بلکہ یہاں علمی، استدلالی اور معروضی زبان ہونا چاہیے تاکہ حقائق پوری طرح روشن ہو سکیں۔تحقیق کی ان منزلوں کو اگر دیانتداری کے ساتھ اپنایا جائے تو یقیناً ایک معیاری تحقیق وجود میں آسکتی ہے اور تحقیق اپنے ان مقاصد کو پورا کر سکتی ہے کہ کسی بات کی تہہ تک پہنچے، حقائق کو صحیح تناظر میں پیش کرے، مفروضے کو حقیقی جامہ پہنائے۔بکھرے ہوئے خیالات اور تجربات ترتیب دے، کسی حقیقت کو اس کے صحیح حوالے اور ماخذ تک لائے۔ اس طرح معیاری تحقیق وجود میں آ سکتی ہے۔

URDU STUDIES, being published since 2019, is an annual peer-reviewed bilingual (English & Urdu) international research journal of the the Department of Urdu, Jai Prakash University, Chapra, India. Its thrust areas are (all with reference to Urdu Language, Literature & Culture): Postcolonial Debates related to Urdu Language, Literature & Culture Contemporary Eastern & Western Critical Theories, and their reception in Urdu Colonial & Postcolonial Studies South Asian Cultural & Historical Studies Psychological Humanities Urdu and Contemporary Western Scholarship Intercultural & Comparative Studies Urdu Theatre & Cinema Translation Studies Urdu Studies is an attempt to bring together academic papers by scholars engaged in Urdu Literature, Language and Culture studies in universities around the world. In this paper I put forward the assumption that English language as a lingua franca is not endangering Urdu in Pakistan. Colonization played a vital role to sow the seeds of English and even after the departure of colonizers it exists. I argue the proposition by emphasizing Urdu as our national identity and a binding agent embracing all provinces in its lap. English is helplessly trying to blur the face of Urdu for the last sixty six years. Its a hanging sword on our culture that has shaken our national faith. Consequently giving birth to unrest, Chaos, demoralization and instability, but remained simply unable to uproot Urdu as a mode of national and cultural integrity from our country. Qualitative methodology would be applied by the researcher. As a researcher I am of the opinion to improvise English as optional curricula after matriculation and make Urdu compulsory till degree level.

The tradition of Urdu literary research goes back to the writing of Tazkiras. The first Tazkira was written in 1752. It was followed by a stream of Tazkira writing. In the next phase Sir Syed and his companions introduced modern style of research. Afterwards objective scientific style of literary research was introduced by Hafiz Mehmood Shirani on the break of 20th century. Henceforward, Urdu research went on the pace and reached at the edge of 21st century. During this journey it saw many changes. In the beginning, most of the works were past-oriented. While in the last 50 years, it has turned towards future. Now both of the streams are going side by side and focus is going to shift towards futurization.

Symbol, the subsequent stride in metaphorical expression and also known as an emblem or sign, holds a pivotal role in literature, particularly in poetry. Within the realm of modern Urdu poetry, it assumes a foundational status, serving as the bedrock of manifold ambiguity. Scholars of Urdu literature harbor diverse and myriad interpretations regarding symbolism. While some perceive it as latent within the text yet integral in meaning, others attribute its essence to the fluidity of meanings inherent in literary compositions. By synthesizing the perspectives of various critics, this article endeavors to elucidate the essence of symbolism. Such elucidation aids in unraveling the structural and formative underpinnings of literary works, thus guiding readers toward a comprehensive grasp of the profound connotations enshrined within the text.

Like every evolving language of the world, the Urdu language also has made many developments in its nature through the course of time. The early history of the Urdu language shows a variety of different dialects, styles, and diction. Deccan period in the history of Urdu language and literature reflects this situation especially. Along with this fact, we find many efforts to resolve the peculiarity of the language of the above-mentioned era through lexicography. Masood Hussain Khan, Ghulam Umar Khan, Jamil Jalibi, Agha Haider Hassan, Javaid Vaishisht, Sayeda Jafar, and some others have made some remarkable efforts through their lexicographical works about the Deccan and early period of Urdu. These works help us better understand the Deccan’s or early literature. This article comprises an overview of such works. It also presents a comparison of these dictionaries.

Akhtar Ul Emaan is an important poet of modern Urdu poetry, but Urdu criticism and research has not given him the attention he deserves. Undoubtedly, his name will continue to be mentioned along with Faiz, Rashid, Mira ji and Majeed Amjad. His poetry made the subject of the external and internal tragedy of the present era very well. Here in this article, an attempt has been made to study the evolution of his poems and try to find out how the themes and styles of his poetry changed over time and how his thoughts matured.

The 21st Century Urdu fiction has witnessed the dramatic rise of the theme of female voice in Urdu fiction. Numerous Urdu fiction writers are playing their part in promoting the said discourse through their works. Amongst them stands out the novella “Mother Daughter” by Hasan Manzar in which the female voice is given power. The beautifully crafted novella faithfully portrays the wounds inflicted upon the women subjugated by patriarchy. The present paper analyses Manzar's “Mother Daughter” in the same perspective to highlight the growing sense of feminine agency.
