In 2024, the most common resume format remains the “reverse-chronological” format. So this is your best bet.

  • Functional Resume - This format is a lot more about your skills as opposed to professional experience. It’s good if you don’t have a lot of experience, are transferring to a new industry, or have gaps in your employment history.
  • Combination Resume - As the name suggests, a combination resume is a mix between “Functional” and “Reverse-Chronological.” Meaning, it focuses both on skills AND work experience. You can use a combination resume if you have a lot of work experience or changing industries.

Once you’ve decided on the format, you need to get your resume layout right.

Here’s what we recommend…

  • Margins - One-inch margins on all sides
  • Font - Pick a font that stands out, but not too much. Do: Ubuntu, Roboto, etc. Don’t: Comic Sans

The answer is simple: use a resume summary or objective .

As a quick intro, both the resume summary and objective are sections that go on top of your resume, just under the contact information section.

The main difference between the 2 sections is that…

A resume summary is a 2-4 sentence summary of your professional experiences and achievements.

  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse with more than five years experience working in emergency care. Compassionate, ethical health-care provider with a proven ability to stay calm during crises. Hold a Master’s of Science in Surgical Nursing. 

A resume objective , on the other hand, is a 2-4 sentence snapshot of your professional goals and aspirations.

  • Patient-focused nursing student with 2 years of healthcare experience. Pursuing internships as part of career goal to become Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse.

So, which one do you pick? A summary, or an objective?

As you can see from the above examples, the key difference between the two is that a Resume Objective is better-suited to those who are new to a field (student, graduate, or switching careers). Always go for a Resume Summary if you have already established your career path.

How to Make Your Nurse Work Experience Stand Out

Work experience is the most important section in your resume.

Sure, your medical skills are super important, but so is your professional experience. Here’s how to structure your work experience section…

Now, if you really want to stand out, you should focus on talking about your achievements instead of responsibilities.

Instead of saying:

“Screen patients upon arrival at emergency ward.”

“Administered emergency ward intake evaluations for up to 25 patients each hour by measuring vital signs and prioritizing cases accordingly.”

So, what’s the difference between the two?

The second one is more specific . You know exactly what the person did, and you can say that he/she can work efficiently. 

The first example, on the other hand, is too generic. Screening patients could be as basic as checking whether they have health insurance and entering their personal information into the hospital system. There is also no mention of how many patients this person is used to handling.

What if You Don’t Have Work Experience?

Maybe you’re a current student trying to land an internship or a recent graduate looking for your first full-time nursing job?

Fortunately, nursing students or graduates gain plenty of practical experience as they navigate their way through their studies. Only so much of the medical field can be taught in the classroom. 

By the time you are in your second year of school, chances are high you’ve been in a health-care facility helping evaluate and treat patients. You may not be a registered nurse at this point, you can absolutely include the skills and procedures you’ve learned in school on your resume.

As part of their career development, many nurses will participate or even speak at nursing conferences. These are great to list on a resume because they highlight your dedication to the profession.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has developed recommendations regarding the order of your formal credentials and where they are placed in relation to other sections.

  • If you're an experienced nursing professional, the education section can go either above or below your employment history . This can be at your discretion, or according to local standards or employer preference.   
  • If you're a new nursing graduate with no work experience, place your education section first, right below the summary.

Nurses at the Front Line of COVID-19: Roles, Responsibilities, Risks, and Rights

Nurses have critical roles and responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. They will continue to be at the front line of patient care in hospitals and actively involved with evaluation and monitoring in the community. Nurses have to ensure that all patients acquire personalized, high-quality services irrespective of their infectious condition. They will also engage in planning for anticipated COVID-19–related outbreaks, which increase the demand for nursing and healthcare services that might overload systems. 1 Moreover, nurses must maintain effective supply and usage of sanitation materials and personal protective equipment and offer screening information, confinement guidelines, and triage protocols based on the latest guidance. A global pandemic needs strong nursing staff engagement in clinical management, awareness and knowledge exchange, and public safety.

The American Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Nurses (2015) is the definitive professional conduct norm for the nursing field. Clause 2 of the code specifies that “the sole responsibility of the nurse is toward the patient.” Clause 5 of the code notes that the nurse has the same obligation to themselves and to others. During outbreaks, these equitable responsibilities can clash as nurses have to constantly care for contagious patients, especially in pressing situations with scarce or unavailable resources and unrestrained contagion. Nurses and their coworkers will have to determine how much care they could give to others in times of pandemics, while still taking care of themselves. 2

As nurses are at the front line of the COVID-19 outbreak response and are exposed to hazards that put them at risk of infection, it is vital that they are supported to protect themselves with specific infection prevention procedures and sufficient provision of protective gear at their practice settings, including ventilators, masks, robes, eye cover, face shields, and gloves. 3 Nursing managers and instructors must include guidance to nurses and support personnel on emerging COVID-19 problems and hazards that are unique to their field of work.

Currently, there has been substantial confusion about the methods of transmission of COVID-19, who is at risk of spreading or catching the virus, and where spreads originate. 4 These misconceptions may circulate across mainstream media, on social networking platforms or in society, and they can conflict with attempts to respond to public health issues. Nurses hold a vital function, as one of the most distinguished health service teams, in delivering public awareness regarding disease prevention and in decreasing the dissemination of myths regarding the epidemic. This involves countering myths, guiding people to available health services, and supporting evidence-based patient management and infection reduction initiatives. 5 , 6

Nurses are now actively involved in COVID-19 interventions, and they will remain key players in stopping the pandemic with adequate assistance. Thus, they must be provided with a healthy work environment to empower their efforts to control and manage the outbreak. Such a work environment should be a judgment-free atmosphere for staff, where they will feel free to comment on accidents such as exposure to body fluids, other infection control risks, or reports of abuse, and to take prompt follow-up action such as providing counseling for staff members. First and foremost, occupational safety is key to nurses’ work during COVID-19, as they are face-to-face with danger on a daily basis. The overarching duty of nurse leadership will be to ensure that the appropriate prevention and security steps are taken to reduce the dangers of the workplace. In this respect, it is important that hospitals have appropriate infection control procedures and personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, goggles, gowns, hand antiseptics, soap and water, and cleaning materials) in ample amounts for personnel who care for suspect or verified COVID-19 patients. Nursing supervisors should offer knowledge on workplace security, in addition to instruction and guidance regarding infection prevention and control and how to properly don, doff, and discard personal protective equipment. In this regard, staff members should also be guided on how to carry out regular self-assessments, and directed on how to follow quarantine or isolation measures, when indicated, to protect them, their families, and their community, as well as to safeguard their mental health and well-being. 7

As for the contractual side of this issue, nursing managers and supervisors are expected to enable nurses to assert the right to withdraw from a job arrangement if they have fair reasons to conclude that their assignments require a significant threat to their life or safety. If a health worker practices this privilege, then they should be shielded from any adverse effects. Furthermore, nurses should be owed the right to reimbursement, psychological counseling, and therapeutic care if they are diagnosed with COVID-19 through contact at work.

Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that can cause symptoms from common cold to more severe disease such as pneumonia and eventually it may lead to death especially those in vulnerable groups such as the elderly , the very young, and people with an underlying chronic health condition.

  • Limited information is available to characterize the spectrum of clinical illness associated with COVID-19.
  • The CDC clinical criteria for a COVID-19 patient under investigation (PUI) have been developed based on what is known about MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV and are subject to change as additional information becomes available.
  • Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread.
  • However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring.

Coronaviruses are common in many different species of animals, including bats, camels, cats, and cattle.

  • COVID-19 is a betacoronavirus, like MERS and SARS, all of which have their origins in bats.
  • The sequences from US patients are similar to the one that China initially posted, suggesting a likely single, recent emergence of this virus from an animal reservoir.

  • Chinese health authorities have confirmed more than 40 infections with a novel coronavirus as the cause of the outbreak.
  • Reportedly, most patients had epidemiological links to a large seafood and animal market; the market was closed on January 1, 2020.
  • Globally, there are 5,030,914 confirmed cases and 326,182 deaths confirmed as of May 21, 2020.
  • The United States has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the world with more than 1.5 million cases (New York City being the most affected).
  • Most countries have declared nationwide lockdowns and have restricted travel.
  • International conveyance cases identified on the Diamond Princess cruise ship currently in Japanese territorial waters have reached 712.

For confirmed COVID-19 infections, reported illnesses have ranged from people being mildly sick to people being severely ill and dying ; these symptoms may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 after exposure based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS viruses.

At this time, diagnostic testing for COVID-19 can be conducted only at CDC

  • To increase the likelihood of detecting infection, CDC recommends collection of three specimen types: lower respiratory, upper respiratory, and serum specimens for testing.
  • CDC has deployed multidisciplinary teams to Washington, Illinois, California, and Arizona to assist health departments with clinical management, contact tracing, and communications.
  • CDC has developed a real-time Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (rRT-PCR) test that can diagnose COVID-19 in respiratory serum samples from clinical specimens.
  • Currently, testing for this virus must take place at CDC, but in the coming days and weeks, CDC will share these tests with domestic and international partners.
  • CDC uploaded the entire genome of the virus from all five reported cases in the United States to GenBank.
  • CDC is also growing the virus in cell culture, which is necessary for further studies, including for additional genetic characterization.

Medical Management

The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this coronavirus.

  • Hand hygiene . Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; if water and soap are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Keep hands off your face. Avoid touching the eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Maintain social distancing. Avoid close contact with people at least 3 feet (1 meter) who are sick, and stay at home when you are sick.
  • Proper cough and sneeze etiquette. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Supportive care. People infected with COVID-19 should receive supportive care to help relieve symptoms.
  • Severe cases. For severe cases, treatment should include care to support vital organ functions.

Healthcare workers are the very people who will be working day-and-night to treat and assist coronavirus patients are among the most exposed population for becoming infected. The protection of vulnerable members is one of the priorities for the response to COVID19 outbreaks. Occupational health services in healthcare facilities play a vital role in helping, supporting, and ensuring that workplaces are safe and healthy and addressing health problems when they arise. WHO emphasizes the rights and responsibilities of health workers, including explicit criteria required to preserve occupational safety and health.

Health worker rights include that employers and managers in health facilities:

  • Assume overall responsibility to ensure that all necessary preventive and protective measures are taken to minimize occupational safety and health risks.
  • Refresher training on infection prevention and control (IPC)
  • Use, putting on, taking off and disposal of personal protective equipment ( PPE ).
  • Provide adequate IPC and PPE supplies (masks, gloves, goggles, gowns, hand sanitizer, soap and water, cleaning supplies) in sufficient quantity to healthcare or other staff caring for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients, such that workers do not incur expenses for occupational safety and health requirements.
  • Familiarize personnel with technical updates on COVID-19 and provide appropriate tools to assess, triage, test and treat patients and to share infection prevention and control information with patients and the public.
  • As needed, provide appropriate security measures for personal safety.
  • Provide a blame-free environment for workers to report on incidents, such as exposures to blood or bodily fluids from the respiratory system or to cases of violence, and to adopt measures for immediate followup, including support to victims.
  • Advise workers on self- assessment , symptom reporting and staying home when ill.
  • Maintain appropriate working hours with breaks.
  • Consult with health workers on occupational safety and health aspects of their work and notify the labor inspectorate of cases of occupational diseases.
  • Not be required to return to a work situation where there is continuing or serious danger to life or health, until the employer has taken any necessary remedial action.
  • Allow workers to exercise the right to remove themselves from a work situation that they have reasonable justification to believe presents an imminent and serious danger to their life or health. When a health worker exercises this right, they shall be protected from any undue consequences.
  • Honor the right to compensation, rehabilitation, and curative services if infected with COVID-19 following exposure in the workplace. This would be considered occupational exposure and resulting illness would be considered an occupational disease.
  • Provide access to mental health and counseling resources.
  • Enable co- operation between management and workers and/or their representatives.

Health workers should:

  • Follow established occupational safety and health procedures, avoid exposing others to health and safety risks and participate in employer-provided occupational safety and health training.
  • Use provided protocols to assess, triage and treat patients.
  • Treat patients with respect, compassion, and dignity.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality .
  • Swiftly follow established public health reporting procedures of suspected and confirmed cases.
  • Provide or reinforce accurate infection prevention and control and public health information, including to concerned people who have neither symptoms nor risk.
  • Put on, use, take off and dispose of personal protective equipment properly.
  • Self-monitor for signs of illness and self-isolate or report the illness to managers, if it occurs.
  • Advise management if they are experiencing signs of undue stress or mental health challenges that require support interventions.
  • Report to their immediate supervisor any situation which they have reasonable justification to believe presents an imminent and serious danger to life or health.

There is no specific antiviral medication yet is recommended for COVID-19 infection, and no current vaccine to prevent it.

Nursing Management

Nursing management for patients with COVID-19 infection include the following:

Assessment of a patient suspected of COVID-19 should include:

  • Travel history. Health care providers should obtain a detailed travel history for patients being evaluated with fever and acute respiratory illness.
  • Physical examination. Patients who have fever, cough, and shortness of breath and who has traveled to Wuhan, China recently must be placed under isolation immediately.

Based on the assessment data, the major nursing diagnosis for a patient with COVID-19 are:

  • Infection related to failure to avoid pathogen secondary to exposure to COVID-19.
  • Deficient knowledge related to unfamiliarity with disease transmission information.
  • Hyperthermia related to increase in metabolic rate.
  • Impaired breathing pattern related to shortness of breath .
  • Anxiety related to unknown etiology of the disease.

The following are the major nursing care planning goals for COVID-19:

  • Prevent the spread of infection.
  • Learn more about the disease and its management.
  • Improve body temperature levels.
  • Restore breathing pattern back to normal.
  • Reduce anxiety .

Listed below are the nursing interventions for a patient diagnosed with COVID-19:

  • Monitor vital signs. Monitor the patient’s temperature; the infection usually begins with a high temperature; monitor the respiratory rate of the patient as shortness of breath is another common symptom.
  • Monitor O2 saturation. Monitor the patient’s O2 saturation because respiratory compromise results in hypoxia.
  • Maintain respiratory isolation. Keep tissues at the patient’s bedside; dispose secretions properly; intsruct the patient to cover mouth when coughing or sneezing; use masks, and advise those entering the room to wear masks as well; place respiratory stickers on chart, linens, and so on.
  • Enforce strict hand hygiene . Teach the patient and folks to wash hands after coughing to reduce or prevent the transmission of the virus.
  • Manage hyperthermia . Use appropriate therapy for elevated temperature to maintain normothermia and reduce metabolic needs.
  • Educate the patient and folks. Provide information on disease transmission, diagnostic testing, disease process, complications, and protection from the virus.

Nursing goals are met as evidenced by:

  • Patient was able to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Patient was able to learn more about the disease and its management.
  • Patient was able to improve body temperature levels.
  • Patient was able to restore breathing pattern back to normal.
  • Patient was able to reduce anxiety.

Documentation guidelines for a patient with COVID-19 include the following:

  • Individual findings, including factors affecting, interactions, nature of social exchanges, specifics of individual behavior.
  • Cultural and religious beliefs, and expectations.

I’m an RN in California, and I’m also a dialysis pt, I’m struggling with the fact that my dialysis center is not following CDC guidelines, for COVID 19, for infection control. For one, pts, visitors are all sitting next to each other in the waiting area. Pts and visitors get screened for coronavirus, once they have entered the door leading to the patient treatment area. Instead of prior to passing the door.

Patients are not instructed on washing hands and how hands should be washed, even though there is a sign to wash hands but is not at eye level. Nor are they offered sanitizer. Also in the waiting area. I spoke with the administrator, which is an LVN, the clinical coordinator which is an Rn(who is lower on the chain of command), and the coordinator of operations( don’t know his credential) regarding my concerns that guidelines are not being followed and pts were at risk. Told them they should be checking everyone at main entrance and not when inside the treatment area. Separate the waiting area chairs, as much as possible. Instruct pt verbally not only on signs but on proper handwashing and to demand hands to be washed or use sanitizer before and after treatment.

I got upset because they said they couldn’t monitor everyone because not enough staff to do so. I got upset and told them it was their responsibility to do so. They got upset at me and told me to leave. I left but told them they will be liable and them will hear from my lawyer for telling me to leave for advocating for myself and for other or

TS. As I Nurse it is my responsibility to do so. Tithe administrator and clinic coordinator followed to be out to have me be dialyzed and said they will implement what I had suggested. I went back to get dialyzed but called the health department the next day to file complaint. Even the health department didn’t want to do much but offered to transfer me to another center. That really got me upset because I told them that that action on their part would not solve the situation. And that it is there responsibility if nothing was done, now that they were informed by a licensed professional.

It was to be taken seriously during the pandemic and when the President, Governor, CDC, WHO, have all stated the seriousness of infection control. In order to try to prevent the spread and more deaths. What do you think and did I follow the correct step. The Governor of California said today to first make the person or facility what they are doing wrong, so they can correct the action and learn from it and they if they continue with the same action, one should then notify the health department so they can then investigate and have the license revoked. I’ve been dealing with this for two weeks. I have dialysis tomorrow and if no changes I will have to proceed with further action. The health department told me I should expect a call tomorrow. Wish me luck. I would like feedback and is any nurse has dealt with similar issue.

Totally and strongly agree with you ! For all we know this facility has not been following proper protocols from beginning. Staffing issue is not a logical reason to break proper rules of infection control and care of patients. There may be one too many of like-minded institutions and if un-monitored by local health officers or administrators this spawns uncontrolled spread of infection. THEN WE SEE THE INEVITABLE OUTCOMES OF ILLNESS AND DEATH !! I APPLAUD YOU FOR YOUR ACTIONS !! WE DO THIS WITH RESPECT AND GENUINE CONCERN FOR ALL ! BLESSINGS ALONG YOUR WAY !!
