What is Prodigy for Education? Best Tips and Tricks

Prodigy makes math fun for students in class or at home

Prodigy

Prodigy is a math-focused blended learning tool that connects in-class and at-home learning for a hybrid system. It does this by gamifying learning.

This game-based learning tool uses a role-playing adventure to engage students in math-focused games. As they learn and understand the math, showing this by completing the tasks, they can progress through the game and improve their learning.

Despite being a very much game-focused platform, Prodigy allows teachers to select from a variety of curricular standards when setting up a class. They can even select specific skills for certain students as needed.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about Prodigy for teachers and students.

What is Prodigy?

Prodigy is a role-playing fantasy adventure game in which the student creates and controls an avatar wizard character who is battling through a mystical land. The battles involve answering math-based questions.

The idea is to get students, usually in home time, so into the game that they are playing out of choice and learning as a result. Of course this can also be played in class, and can even act as a common point of communication for students.

Prodigy

The planner tool allows the parent or teacher to assign specific topics for each student. This game is curriculum setup with Common Core, Ontario Math, NCERTS, and National Curriculum (UK) all included.

Prodigy is both app and web-based so it can be used on nearly any device. Since it's a low impact game, it doesn't require a lot of processing power, making it accessible on even older devices.

How does Prodigy work?

Prodigy is free to sign-up for and to use. Students can access the platform to play while the parent or teacher can set up how the gaming works. This even includes a co-teaching option in which multiple teachers can work within the same dashboard.

Once the app is downloaded on iOS or Android, or the game is signed into on a browser, students can start deciding how they want their wizard character to look and more. Once this creative process is complete, they can start their quest, with a math magic level showing how well they are doing at levelling up their character.

This is when the paid version can make a difference as students using that are able to level up faster with more in-game rewards available. The makers of Prodigy say that this has proven to improve math progress at a faster rate than those using the free version. To keep things fair, it's probably advisable to have the whole class on the free or paid version.

The game lets wizards chat with other characters through pre-written comment choices, challenge friends to battle in an arena, or take on monsters and special bosses through the story mode. The more math progress that is made, the more powers and abilities the wizard avatar develops.

Prodigy

What are the best Prodigy features?

Prodigy features a useful Focus mode that increases the amount of time that students are doing actual math within the game itself - ideal if using this in class to practice a skill that's just been taught.

Students are able to see one another's progress and play together, both in class and remotely. This can help to promote progress as groups work to develop at similar levels without falling behind. The downside here is that the paid version allows for faster progress, creating an unfair balance for those that can't afford the paid version.

The multiplayer mode is invaluable as even after the story mode may have become less enthralling, this mode allows students to play together and progress.

The game adapts to the needs and abilities of the student, allowing them to learn what they need and at a rate that's encouraging. The game keeps offering new worlds and special items to discover so as to keep students engaged and progressing.

How much does Prodigy cost?

Prodigy is free to download and start playing. However there are adverts, but they're only promotions of the paid tier of the game and can be quite easily ignored.

There is a paid tier, charged at $8.95 per month or $59.88 per year. This doesn't offer any additional educational content but it does mean there are more in-game items, treasure chests, and pets – all of which can help progress the student quicker.

Prodigy best tips and tricks

Create a tournament Teachers can set up tournaments or specific challenges to allow for healthy competition and the chance to work toward a goal.

Build a story While the game itself is about progressing math skills, teachers can set the task of creative writing background stories for the wizard characters for a creative expansion of the fantasy world, potentially leading to deeper involvement.

Take it into reality Use the game for real-world connections, such as looking at the geometry of the magical crystals to lead into discussing crystals in class. Or explore the magical potions to introduce a lesson on chemistry.

4 Ways to Use Prodigy Math Game in the Classroom

prodigy math game in classroom

Prodigy Math Game is a free online game covering math standards from kindergarten through eighth grade. The game-based learning platform has been a staple in my classroom for several years. I love the game so much, I became a Prodigy Global Ambassador to help onboard other educators to the system. Depending on the amount of technology and instructional minutes of your classroom, you can use Prodigy as:

1. Bellwork – Before and/or After

If your classroom is one-to-one , try using Prodigy as a warm-up to your lesson or on the tail end as an exit ticket. First, log in to your teacher dashboard and make a learning plan. With a few clicks, you’ll then schedule topics and specific skills to cover through in-game questions. The whole thing takes maybe a minute to set up.

I really like using the game as a pre- and post-assessment. Prior to teaching a concept, I assign Prodigy. As students play, Prodigy collects data. The reports tell me where individual students are struggling. This helps me craft my instructional approach to address misconceptions. Towards the end of the unit, I’ll reassign the standard and evaluate student understanding.

2. Learning Center Station Rotations

In classrooms with limited technology , using Prodigy as center work allows all students a chance to play. When my class only had access to four iPads, this is the route I went. I’d set up the iPads for my technology center and have students rotate throughout the week until each group got a turn. On the iPad, you can download the app for easier login. On computers, you would simply use the website: play.prodigy.com

3. Independent Practice – Homework

Don’t have the technology or a single instructional minute to spare? That’s okay; send Prodigy home! By using the assignment feature, students will receive custom work for independent practice. Helloooo, differentiation! You can choose the questions based on skill/difficulty. Then, decide if you’ll assign the work to specific students or the entire class. Prodigy is awesome like that!

4. Individualized Education Plans

Lastly, use Prodigy for specialized education, be it for intervention or advancement. As the game determines a student’s struggles, Prodigy automatically adapts to deliver content that builds prerequisite skills. In areas where Prodigy sees student excellence, the system introduces elevated concepts.

As a teacher, you also have the ability to override this feature and deliver your own questions that focus on the desired material. Being a teacher of students with learning disabilities, I assign coursework aligned to my student’s IEP goals.

Euro 2024: Spain 16-year-old Lamine Yamal becomes youngest player in tournament history

Spain forward Lamine Yamal became the youngest player in European championship history on Saturday.

Yamal was in the starting 11 for Spain's Group B match against Croatia in Berlin at the age of 16 years and 338 days old. He beat the previous record set by Poland's Kacper Kozlowski, who was 17 years and 246 days old when he made his debut at Euro 2020.

The forward has been somewhat of a child prodigy in soccer since he arrived with FC Barcelona when he was age 7. He was clearly ahead of the rest of the players in his age group, and by the time he was playing in the U19 stage, he began training with FC Barcelona's first team at the request of coach Xavi Hernández, according to the club .

At the age of 15, Yamal made his first-team debut in April 2023 when he came in as a substitute in a La Liga match against Real Betis. While he isn't the youngest La Liga player in history, he is the youngest player to ever appear in a match for the storied club. In the 2023-24 season, Yamal has scored five goals.

This isn't Yamal's first appearance with the national team. He made his debut in September in a Euro 2024 qualifying match against Georgia, and he scored a goal to become the youngest goalscorer in Spain history.

Yamal recently said he brought his homework to do while playing in Euro 2024.

How to Use Prodigy as an Engaging Station Rotation Activity

A teacher supporting her student as they engage in station rotation activities.

Written by Maria Kampen

  • Prodigy School

Station rotations  are a tried-and-true  blended learning  technique for classrooms with limited technology. Students receive all the benefits of technology-based learning, and teachers don’t need to source devices for every student.

Other benefits of using stations in your classroom include:

  • Student independence and ownership of various tasks
  • Opportunities for small group instruction and student collaboration
  • The chance for students to stay actively engaged and facilitate their own learning
  • Easy differentiation and multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding

Using online, offline and small-group instruction, station rotations keep students engaged in learning.

Stations have many benefits, but how do you make sure that the content your students receive at each station is differentiated to meet the needs of your learners? And how do you know if it’s working?

Prodigy is an online math tool that you can use in your station rotation activity!  In under five minutes you can set up an engaging online math station that delivers custom assignments to your students  and  provides you with a clear picture of student achievement and understanding.

How to set up a rotation station with Prodigy using Assignments

It’s easy to use Prodigy for your station rotation setup!

Here’s how:

1. Log in to Prodigy! Go to  prodigygame.com  and enter your username and password.

2. Select your classroom and click  Reports.  Use the  Curriculum Coverage  report to:

  • Pinpoint  class-wide strengths and trouble spots
  • Analyze  individual student understanding and achievement
  • Measure  student progress through curriculum across domains and strands

Got all your data?

Now it’s time to use that data to make your station rotation even more effective — and fun!

3. Click  Assessments  on the left side of your teacher dashboard.

Screenshot of teacher dashboard in Prodigy Math Game.

4.  At the top of your screen, click the green  Create  button.

Screenshot of dashboard showing math assessments in calendar form.

5. Select  Assignments .

6. A screen will load that allows you to choose curriculum-aligned domains and standards. Although your grade and curriculum are pre-set, you can change them at the top of this screen to deliver foundational or advanced skill practice during station rotations.

Use the data from your  Curriculum Coverage  report to make sure your students are receiving targeted math practice that builds their skills!

8. Choose a start and end date for your  Assignment .

9. Repeat this process to deliver targeted questions to individual students or groups of students.

10. Give students time to play during your station rotation!

But wait! There’s one more important step: Once students have completed the Assignment , go back to your Assessments tool and click on the Assignment in the calendar.

Screenshot of 'View Report' in Prodigy Math Game's Assessment tool.

Select  View Report  to:

  • See individual student results
  • View a question-by-question breakdown of the results
  • Understand which students need more practice with the material

You can use this data to set up your next  Assignment , inform your small-group instruction time, or plan your next lesson!

Final thoughts: Using Prodigy for station rotation

Don’t just set one  Assignment  — keep sending students in-game questions aligned with your classroom instruction to build personalized math practice.

There are other ways to use Prodigy as part of a station rotation, too:

  • Assign a  Test Prep  to get students ready for your state’s standardized test.
  • Set a  Plan  — where students work through expectations at their own pace — to prepare for learning important concepts or give students extra practice on the unit they just learned!
