‘Ustaad’ movie review: An imperfect yet warm coming-of-age story of a boy and his bike 

Debut director phanideep, actors simha koduri and kavya kalyanram make an impression in the telugu film ‘ustaad’, a slightly overdrawn story of a boy, his dreams, and his bike .

In the opening sequence of the Telugu movie Ustaad , written and directed by first-timer Phanideep, a young father (Venkatesh Maha in a cameo) tells his wife Gayathri (Anu Hasan) that it is important to give their son moments to cherish. The setting is Jadcherla in Telangana, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The father pronounces moments as ‘movements’ and is charmingly corrected by his wife who is a teacher. The boy is fascinated by a kite flying high but discovers that he has a fear of heights. Can that hold him back from dreaming? Ustaad is the story of this boy, Surya ( Sri Simha Koduri ), who conquers acrophobia to become a pilot with his bike ‘Ustaad’ playing a catalyst in his journey. There’s another love story — between Surya and Meghna ( Kavya Kalyanram ) — but the Surya-Ustaad story is the spine of the film.

Ustaad is a film that is aware of its limitations of scale. It is also aware that its strength lies in characters that are relatable. There is no glossing over everyday situations. The households, neighbourhoods, streets, and bazaars have a lived-in and close-to-real quality. 

Ustaad (Telugu)

Phanideep unravels the story through a flashback, narrated by first officer pilot Surya to captain Joseph D’Souza ( Gautham Vasudev Menon ). A fleeting scene later in the film reveals Surya’s full name as Surya Sivakumar. Perhaps this was Phanideep’s way of doffing his hat to director Gautham Menon and one of his favourite actors, Suriya Sivakumar. 

Like a few other Telugu films in the last couple of years, Phanideep too chooses to set his story at a time before the overdose of digital communication. He chooses the mid-2000s to show the charm of letters, landline phones, and SMS to add warmth to the Surya-Meghna romance. The 2000s setting also lets him tip his hat to Mani Ratnam’s Alaipayuthey (Sakhi in Telugu) by conjuring up an entire sequence in which Surya travels to Araku Valley just to tell Meghna how much he loves her. The segment comes across as cinematic rather than as an organic trajectory of events, but manages to retain some charm.

The narrative establishes that Ustaad is Surya’s first love by designing a love-at-first-sight sequence when the 19-year-old Surya first spots the bike at a scrapyard. Who ever thought a bike would get a heroine-like introduction with a rain sequence? Maybe this harks back to the director’s memories of his bike and is his ode to boys and their favourite bikes. One of the best segments of Ustaad is the bike halting in the middle of nowhere and the situation prompting Surya to scale the rocky terrain, unmindful of his acrophobia, and learning that he wants to conquer the skies.

The story appears simple on the surface but as the layers get peeled, it delves deeper into the mindsets of its characters. Anu Hasan is endearing as a level-headed, progressive single mother who adores her son but never hesitates from showing him the mirror to his shortcomings. Simha is convincing, portraying the transformation of a boy prone to aggression to one who matures up to take the rough things in his stride. 

After Balagam , this is another impressive performance by Kavya Kalyanram. Though the romance could have benefitted from better writing to make us empathise with the characters, Kavya makes good use of the material given to her and portrays a determined yet vulnerable young woman with finesse. Ravindra Vijay as an alcoholic mechanic who is Ustaad’s only hope, and Ravi SivaTeja who plays Simha’s friend, also deserve a mention.

The drama loses steam after a point and the writing resorts to cinematic overtures and convenient coincidences in the final segment. Had this portion been conceived better, it would have been a befitting end to the coming-of-age story. Ustaad also feels overdrawn and could have benefitted with some trimming. 

Such missteps prevent Ustaad from soaring high. Nevertheless, the crux of the narrative is engaging and has moments to savour.

Ustaad movie review: a positive-spirited conversational drama.

'Ustaad', produced by Rajani Korrapati, Rakesh Reddy Gaddam, and Himank Reddy Duvvuru, was released in theatres today. In this section, we are going to review the latest BO release.

The film opens with a young pilot named Surya (Sri Simha Koduri) making a debut in the pilot's seat. He starts narrating the saga of his rise from nobody to somebody to his accomplished Captain (Gautham Menon).

Cut to the past, Surya was considered a dimwit in studies. He struggled to complete his graduation but a good-looking yet semi-defunct bike named Ustaad inspired him to dream big. When his relationship with his girlfriend Meghana (Kavya Kalyanram) turned tumultuous, the going got tough. The crux of the second half is about how Surya rose to become a pilot despite emotional hardships.

Performances:

As an optimistic yet emotionally vulnerable youngster, Sri Simha Koduri gives a thorough performance. He is a surprise package in the second half, where director Phanideep (who is a fan of Gautham Menon) burdens him with heavy-duty scenes. The youngster was subpar in the recent comedy caper 'Bhaag Saale'. While his previous three films reduced him to one-note acting, 'Ustaad' gives him the opportunity to deliver a worthy performance. This is also the first film in which budding comedian Ravi Siva Teja gets to share screen space with the male lead in a full-fledged manner for half the running time.

This film belongs to supporting artists more than the female lead. While Kavya Kalyanram is apt, it is Ravindra Vijay and Gautham Menon who are better. Anu Haasan (as the male lead's mother) is good. Sai Kiran Yedida is seen as the lead man's uncle.

Technical aspects:

Debutant composer Akeeva B deserves a pat on the back for enhancing the dramatic portions. No song feels forced, as almost all the songs are montage songs built on the situations (both pleasant and tense). The background score is uplifting as well. The cinematography by Pavan Kumar Pappula and the Production Design by Pravalya D fit the bill.

Conversational dramas are not easy on the mind, especially if you are selling your film to an impatient audience that prefers masala elements for the most part and emotional monologues only in the climax. That's why conversational love stories are rarely made in Telugu. 'Ustaad', which might find traction when it arrives on OTT, is a courageous attempt in this context.

The bike that Surya owns becomes the symbol of his aspirational journey. Lucky coincidences, feel-good montage stretches and a mother who motivates her son to embrace his flaws define his journey. Ravindra Vijay's mechanic character asks Surya to trust machines as they never cheat humans. Through and through, Surya realizes that he can't escape the gifts the bike wants to bestow on him. These are the kind of elements that you can expect the multiplex audience to appreciate.

The coming-of-age story is packed with moments where the protagonist strives to overcome his fears and inefficiencies. He is not your practical-minded person but a dreamy, clean-hearted guy who privileges experiences and memories over materialism. He appreciates his mother's fighting spirit, leaving her in tears.

All said, the script is not wholesome enough to make us feel Suriya's mental and emotional transformation, and what it feels like to undergo life-altering experiences. The love story takes precedence in the second half. The 'love at first sight' trope hasn't been deployed effectively. There are quite a few areas where the film feels too self-indulgent.

Closing Remarks:

'Ustaad' is a well-meaning film with strong performances and excellent music. Its multiplex sensibilities make it a niche film.

Ustaad Movie(2023): What's Behind

Sri Simha Koduri's upcoming flick Ustaad directed by Phanideep is appealing to all with the unique title and interesting teaser and trailer. The film is releasing on 12 August 2023. The way the makers slated the film after two biggies Rajinikanth's Jailer and Chiranjeevi's Bholaa Shankar, speaks volumes about their confidence. The film's OTT rights are yet to be finalised and streaming will be after the end of its theatrical run.

Ustaad Telugu Movie: Story Review

Ustaad's story is all about a hot-blooded young man who overcomes all obstacles and fears and wins over his love and also realizes his passion. First Officer Surya (Sri Simha Koduri) is about to take off his flight with Captain Joseph D Souza( Gautam Menon) who is a tough task master. Surya suffers from  Acrophobia and it all boils down to whether Surya managed to land the plane safely.

In the process, one gets to know the connection between Surya with his mother Gayatri (Anu Haasan), beautiful girl Meghana (Kavya Kalyanram), Mama (Sai Kiran Yedida), mechanic Brahmam(Ravindra Vijay) in the life of Surya and also about Ustaad and his relation with him.

Ustaad Movie: Artists Review

Sri Simha Koduri performed in the role tailormade for him. It is known that Sri Simha is known to live in the role of a underdog who has some problem and then overcomes and accomplices the task. He showed good expressions and emotions, highlighting the friendship and son-mother sentiment and emotions with his lover. He scored full marks for his performance. Except for few minute slips, he did well in his role.

Kavya Kalyanram looked chubby on the screen. She impressed all with her Telangana accent and dialogue delivery. The romantic track between Sri Simha and Kavya came out well. Anu Haasan played the role of Sri Simha's mother and she lived in the role. She came up with subtle expressions dn emotions and did not overdid herself.

Sai Kiran Yedida in the important character of Mama made a good impact. Ravindra Vijay as mechanic performed well showing good emotions and also highlighting the importance of treating machines with love. Gautam Menon as the captain takes the story forward and he made his presence felt. Samy who played the role of Sri Simha's friend performed well.

Ustaad Movie: Technicians Review

Ustaad's story directed by Phanideep through routine touched a new point and highlighted the bonding between man and a machine. To a simple feel-good love story, he added the bonding between the man and the machine, a bike called Ustaad, and generated interest among movie lovers. The first half goes off smoothly with entertaining, emotional, romantic, and hilarious scenes. The first half ends on a sedate note setting the stage for the second half.

However, Phanideep seems to have gotten excited with the first half, and in his excitement, he included many repetitive scenes that impacted the film. Phanideep's story is just ok but the way he highlighted the bonding between the man and the bike, not only visually but also in dialogue, excited all. Even the romantic track between the lead pair generated interest though after a point everything turned routine. Phanideep's screenplay is quite good and the direction is just ok. Dialogues are entertaining and at times thought provoking. But at times, dialogues faded bringing down the intensity.

Akeeva's  music is melodious and melancholic. It highlighted the right feel and mood of the story. A couple of songs are shot in the exotic and beautiful locations. He made a good impact with his BGM. BGM elevated the soul of the film. The cinematography of Pavan Kumar Puppala beautified the film. He showed the natural and realistic locations of coastal Andhra and Araku in an appealing way. Carthik Cuts' editing is good in the first half but he left many repetitive scenes in the second half and this adversely affected the film. Production values of Vaarahi  Chalana Chitram are good.

Ustaad Telugu Movie: Rating Analysis

Altogether, Ustaad is a feel-good emotional romantic entertainer. Phanideep planned Ustaad with Sri Simha Koduri and he got the right kind of role for him. He got the optimum out of the cast and crew coming up with a decent story. Though he lost the plot in between with repetitive scenes and stretched scenes, he struck to the point. His screenplay and direction is on the mark. A little bit of fine-tuning of the story and script would have done wonders for the film. Considering all these points, Cinejosh goes with a 2 Rating for Ustaad.

MM Keeravani’s younger son Simha Koduri made a decent debut with Mathu Vadalara. However, his subsequent attempts turned futile. Yet he hasn’t given up. He is trying his best. Simha is now back with Ustaad. Let’s check whether he breaks the jinx or not.

Surya (Simha) is extremely passionate about his bike Ustaad. He wants to prove himself as a pilot and win his love Meghana (Kavya Kalyanram). What are the odds and struggles he faces both externally and internally? How is his Bike Ustaad connected to his life? Will Surya achieve his dream? Will he win his love? The film has answers for these. 

Thumbs Down

Youth have two favourites – Bikes & Girls. Protagonist Surya has love for his vintage bike and this girl Meghana whom he calls her as “Bamma”. Yes, you heard it right. This is the tip of the iceberg. The film has this old touch seen here and there. 

The idea of Ustaad on paper seems to be good. But this gets totally lost in its translation to the big screen. Ustaad tests patience. The lack of clarity and inconsistency are what boggle down the film. The protagonist has a flawed character – he is scared of heights, he is hyper, has no control over him, gets angry instantly (like Arjun Reddy), damages his own things. Despite all this, he successfully achieves his dream to become a pilot. He narrates the story to the chief pilot Captain Joseph (Gautham Menon). The screenplay is back-and-forth. All these sound good, but the director Phanideep failed miserably in using these ably. 

The characters suddenly get emotional, suddenly fights and suddenly gets burst. Sometimes, the story moves at snail pace. At portions, the film turns intense. And amidst all this, there is mother sentiment. There is a bike mechanic Brahmam (Ravindra Vijay) who gets so emotional about this old bike and names it Ustaad. What is his connection to the bike isn’t portrayed well.

Audience may not relate to the bike sentiment. Both the bike and love have failed to connect the audience emotionally. This is where director Phanideep failed. Simha tries his best with his acting. But he does over-acting and gets over-emotional which pisses off. Kavya is alright. Ravindra Vijay, Anu Haasan and Gautam Menon did show their mature performance as actors. 

The stress is largely on the bike and less on the love. The love track between the hero and heroine lacked the punch. The pre-interval portions are dragged. The climax is written well but fails in the execution. On the whole, Ustaad has no engaging moments. It bites the dust too.

What it's about

With whole franchises dedicated to cars and motorcycles, cinema has often regarded these individually-piloted machines as intrinsically linked with masculinity. Ustaad is the latest Telugu love letter to motorcycles and planes, as these have shaped protagonist Surya Sivakumar’s life. In debut writer-director Phanideep’s hands, Surya’s journey to becoming a commercial airline pilot is a long one, as Ustaad details Surya’s first motorbike, first romantic relationship, and the way he overcame his fear of heights. It’s a fun drive, and there’s plenty of moments where Phanideep’s style feels free and unrestrained. However, it’s a drive that takes too long, with predictable beats that have been seen before.

What stands out

Ustaad feels too long because it tackles two stories. The first half is dedicated exclusively to Surya and his bike, while the second is his journey to becoming a pilot. However, what makes this film watchable is how in awe Phanideep seems to feel about motorcycles in general. The very first scene of Surya’s motorcycle feels like Surya has met the love of his life, with wind fans blowing dust off metal, and the rain slowly falling onto the chrome, as he pulls away the tarp covering the bike. The film easily excuses it as a random rainstorm, but the treatment feels very familiar. In another life, Phanideep must have been a bike commercial director, because the way these vehicles are portrayed makes me want to buy one.

Ustaad Movie Review: Motorcycle Diaries

More often than not, when we stumble across objects, be it toys or books or any miscellaneous relics from our childhood, we experience a benign, but also sharp twang of pain. Yes, things were simpler and better back then but also, why did we ever grow up? How did we have the heart to abandon these objects and move on? As much as they are objects, they have meant as much, and probably even more, than people at one point. “People may cheat you, machines will never cheat you. Treat them well and they will teach you a lot,” says a character from Ustaad , and that is a good starting point for us to understand this film at large.  

We are quickly introduced to two very different parts of our protagonist Surya (Sri Simha)’s life. In one, he is a child, throwing up after going up on a ferris wheel ride. In another, he is a pilot, ready to fly for the first time. The contrasts stretch a little more when we learn that Surya will be flying for the first time with Captain Joseph D’Souza (Gautham Vasudev Menon), who is flying for the last time, just before his retirement. Surya, scared of this senior who keeps referring to him with an unprintable B-word, thinks of telling his life story to distract this somewhat unlikeable man.

The nostalgia around objects also extends to an unspecified period in the 2000s it is set in, which makes the film populate its story with dabba phones, PCO booths and a domestic airport (Hyderabad got its international airport in 2008). The 2000s setting also reflects in Joseph calling a female cabin crew member sweetheart and love, something downright offensive (for all good reasons) in today’s time and age. We are also introduced to Meghana (Kavya Kalyanram), who loves writing and receiving handwritten letters. Ustaad itself doubles up as a tiny love letter towards Surya s/o Krishnan/ Vaaranam Aayiram , what with Gautham Menon’s casting and the names of his leads. But one of my favourite parts has to be the majority of the film being set in a town close to Hyderabad. There is no mention of the area’s name, but we do see some affecting and poignant B-roll of trains and this giant, beautiful rock with foliage all over. It is a small detail, which goes a long way in making the story more authentic and heartfelt. The rocks later play a major role in Surya discovering his passion, not to mention the highway stretches, where the protagonist rides his bike named Ustaad. 

If the MacGuffin device of storytelling, popularly seen in Citizen Kane , and closer home in Mahanati and Sita Ramam , revolves around a set of characters in pursuit of an object, Ustaad pulls a reverse MacGuffin with an object leading a character to, first his overall transition from boyhood to manhood, followed by journeys, quite literally, to his passion and lady love. While I was already inclined to believe that this is a very real and believable story, the director credits/thanks his old bike in the end credits, which makes this film all the more beautiful. 

While Surya’s love for Ustaad is easily persuasive, it is his story with Meghana that I particularly enjoyed. It is not only believable, but you also keep rooting for them throughout the film. Phanideep has taken particular efforts in ensuring that the depiction of their relationship rises above cliches. Kavya plays a role quite similar to the ones she has earlier played in Masooda and Balagam, but here she gets a meatier role. She displays reluctance, anger and confusion at different points in the film, all of which come from a place of assured maturity. The role of Surya’s mother, played by Anu Haasan, is another interestingly written character, throwing refreshing surprises uncharacteristic of a Tollywood mother. 

As much as there is a lot to love about Ustaad, including some decent shot composition (ably assisted by cinematographer Pavan Kumar Puppala) — Ustaad the film, much like Ustaad the bike stops along at some places when it should have raced on. The film tries to interlink memory and experience at different places, but the montages don’t match up to the level of sentiment. A lot of the film remains on paper, in theory, and the reason it did not translate into emotion has to do with the performances of the film, which are amateurish at best and ineffectual at worst. And the way the film closes. Ah, well. Lets just say the director pulled a Ye Maaya Chesave ending, when a Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya ending would have arguably been better. It still feels good, but should it, though? Loss is about as inevitable as joy, in the many journeys we take in life.

Ustaad review: This ambitious premise doesn’t have the wings to fly high

Despite arresting visual metaphors and impressive performances, most of the film’s good ideas are lost in translation

Surya is a youngster living in a suburb outside Hyderabad, who loses his father early, and is raised by his mom. He experiences the first brush of freedom through a second hand bike - which his mechanic names Ustaad - a constant companion in his life. He falls in love with Meghana, a fiesty girl with big dreams. How far will he go to overcome his fears and succeed in love and his career?

Ustaad is a love story between Surya and his bike - the girl Meghana is just another passenger in his journey. When Surya goes to a garage to buy a second hand bike, there’s magic in his eyes, the cover comes off due to the wind, there’s rain and it’s love at first sight. The bike calms him, is a mute witness through his highs and lows. It’s literally an avenue that paves the way to his dreams.

The director Phanideep exhibits a taste for visual storytelling with his plot points - the film unfolds through a flashback while Surya begins his duties as a pilot. Through his journey on a flight, we go back in time to see his rags-to-riches story. The protagonist’s character is layered and equally flawed - he is largely directionless, has the fear of heights, doesn’t have a control on his emotions.

Through his love life with Meghana, Surya realises the importance of holding onto things, fighting for those who mean much to him. Ustaad is a film documenting his fight for love and his dreams and the various obstacles that come his way. While it is like poetry in motion till it establishes the importance of the bike in Surya’s life, it’s the romance chapter where it loses track.

A bulk of the director’s ideas with Surya-Meghana’s track appear quirky on paper but lack spunk in execution. He meets Meghana on a road in the middle of a funeral procession, communicates with her secretly through letters, over landline calls, SMSs (the film is set in mid 2000s) and drives all the way from Hyderabad to Araku to woo his love. The relationship appears more cinematic than earnest.

While the film wants to showcase the youngster’s psychological evolution through love, it doesn’t translate convincingly enough on the screen. However, there’s a superb sequence capturing Surya’s motivation to chase his dreams. He forgets about acrophobia as he spots a flight standing atop a rock, treats it like a kite, imagines a manja in his hand, hops onto his bike and playfully chases the flight on the road - he finds bliss, loses track of time and makes up his mind.

Such mini-sparkles where you sense the storyteller’s determination to capture the essence of the moment are far few and between. Beyond a point, the director is obsessed about the bike - he tries to reemphasise its significance through various characters. The romance angle - except for the well-filmed confrontation scene between Meghana’s father and Surya - lacks meat.

In a story about a character’s ambition and self-transformation, you don’t get to witness Surya’s evolution enough. The film needed better sequences to portray his struggles at the aviation academy - you see his notorious side but you don’t get a sense of how he overcomes his limitations (the paragliding sequence is poorly executed). Budgetary issues may have been a reason though the writing too needed more imagination.

Ustaad gives decent screenspace to the people in and around Surya’s life - his friend, girlfriend, mother and the mechanic, but the characterisation is vague. You want to know more about Meghana’s interests to pursue her MBA, how Surya’s mother goes about her profession and struggles to raise her son, what his friend does beyond boozing around and accompanying him wherever he goes.

The connection between Surya’s bike and the magical cupboard in The Chronicles of Narnia during his conversation with his superior is intriguing. Ustaad is ultimately an imaginative script with many promising ideas but it needed some fine-tuning for better results. On the technical front, what the team manages to achieve within its limitations is quite impressive.

The cinematographer Pavan’s finesse reflects in the wide expanses, panoramic shots and his visual detailing to showcase Surya’s love for flying. Akeeva’s music has a certain recall value, though the song placement leaves a lot to be desired. With the background score, he gives a rustic touch to the proceedings while more sophistication could’ve enhanced the impact better. The narrative structure is apt, generates intrigue, but the film overstays its welcome by at least 30 minutes.

Sri Simha Koduri’s unconventional script choices may/may not have yielded the right results to date, but they’re definitely helping him progress as a performer with each outing. Kavya Kalyanram is impressive though it’s time that writers looked beyond her spunky persona and give her different roles. Anu Hasan is aptly cast as the strong, friendly single parent.

Ravi Sivateja displays a good knack for comedy while Ravindra Vijay’s potential is underutilised in the brief role.Venkatesh Maha, Gautham Menon’s special appearances make a considerable impact in the story.

Ustaad is a coming-of-age story depicting the transition of a directionless teenager to a pilot where a bike is a metaphor to portray his journey. The film struggles to keep you invested in the protagonist’s journey despite the impressive performances, visual detailing and technical finesse.

Simha Koduri, son of MM Keeravani is trying hard to impress with back-to-back films. His new movie has been titled Ustaad and has been released today. Read our review here.

Story: Surya(Simha Koduri) is a carefree youth who buys his first bike in life. He names it Ustaad and as time passed by, he falls in love with Meghana(Kavya Kalyanram). But a slight disturbance in the love story changes Surya’s life. The bike also helps him to aim big and become a pilot in life. How all this happens is the story of Ustaad.

Performances: Sri Simha Koduri has improved vastly as an actor. When compared to his previous films, Ustaad is a lot better. Simha gets to play a character in three age groups and he does so well in it. All his scenes with the bike and Kavya have come out quite well. Talking about Kavya Kalyanram, she is great in the film. Her performance and character bring an edge to the film. Her chemistry is also great with Simha. Gautam Menon plays a key role and he was great in the film. The rest of the supporting cast was ordinary.

Technicalities: The writing is decent and the backdrop chosen and the manner in which the youngster gets inspired from his bike is handled in a good way. But the screenplay does not arrest you with its narration. The editing is pathetic as the film is slow and takes a lot of time to get going. Also, the camerawork and locations chosen are very good and so were the production values as well. The production design and the simple setup of the bike are also great. The musical compositions by Akeeva B struggle to leave an impact, and the background score feels out of sync with the narrative.

Analysis: Phanideep’s narrative showcases a decent story. While it follows the familiar underdog theme of a carefree youngster aspiring to be a pilot aided by his motorcycle, the context and environment in which he weaves this tale provide a refreshing touch. The story is enriched with authentic drama interwoven with light-hearted humor, and it also features a charming romantic subplot between the lead characters.

However, the screenplay falls short of its potential. The unfolding drama maintains a leisurely pace, lacking significant climactic moments crucial for such a storyline. The handling of marriage discussions and break-up sequences in the latter half is skillful, but the climax fails to deliver the anticipated tension. Phanideep’s directorial debut displays both strengths and weaknesses. Some scenes are executed with maturity, while others leave loose ends.

The film’s pacing is a drawback, with the screenplay lacking depth in places. The music, particularly the forgettable songs, the absence of significant high points, and the middling visual effects and graphics contribute to a less-than-optimal viewing experience. The film will impress you at places but for the most part, it is slow and has a story that has been showcased in many films before.

Verdict: Overall, Ustaad has the premise and performances but is very slow to digest. The screenplay lacks the spark and the length is also an issue. If you love coming-of-age dramas, give it a shot, or else take it easy this weekend.

Ustaad Movie Review: A Mounted Ride With A Unique Idea

Making a grand entry on the silver screens, the movie Ustaad came under the spotlight on August 12, 2023. 

Ustaad – The Story Beyond the Screen

At the heart of this movie is Surya, an aimless youngster portrayed impressively by Sri Simha Koduri. His life takes a sharp turn when he purchases a bike, a mechanical wonder named Ustaad. 

This purchase awakens in him the ambition of becoming a pilot. But does he succeed in achieving this dream? Adding a love thread, Surya also falls for Meghana, played by Kavya Kalyanram. What are the trials they face? How do Surya and Meghana manage these obstacles? This forms the backbone of Ustaad’s storyline.

What Worked About Ustaad?

Ustaad offers the audience a fresh viewpoint of Sri Simha as an actor. His performance exhibits a wide spectrum of emotions, making the audience connect with his character. The relationship Surya forms with his bike, personifying it as “Ustaad,” serves as an interesting premise.

His childhood memories and the bike acting as a propeller towards his dreams is an aspect cleverly woven into the plot.

Despite the slow-paced start, the first half bears some engaging moments. Newcomer Ravi Siva Teja’s portrayal as the protagonist’s friend and his comedic timing offers light-hearted entertainment.

What Could Have Been Better?

The film’s pacing, particularly in the second half, hampers its dynamics. The romantic escapades between Surya and Meghana initially add some charm but quickly become disappointingly dragged and monotonous.

Ustaad fails to integrate an absorbing second half and frequently loses track with unnecessary scenes. The editing could have been sharp and concise, trimming down repetitive sequences. 

The story stagnates, circling around monotonous details that test viewers’ patience.

While Ustaad has a promising plot and commendable performances, it unfortunately stumbles with its screenplay and pace. The film has its moments but falls short in delivering a captivating storytelling experience. Sri Simha Koduri’s performance is applause-worthy, yet the narrative failures overshadow his efforts.

Ustaad pulls off a coming-of-age drama infused with a sprinkle of romance and comedy. However, the stretched romantic angle and snail-paced narrative make it a lukewarm watch. Will the film’s narrative shortcomings hinder your movie-watching experience? It’s up to you to decide.

సూర్య(శ్రీ సింహా)కి అతని చిన్నతనం నుంచే ఎత్తైన ప్రదేశాలంటే భయం. పెద్దయ్యాక కూడా అతనిలో ఆ ప్రభావం ఉంటుంది. ఐతే, సూర్య డిగ్రీలో ఉన్నప్పుడు ఉస్తాద్ అనే బైక్ మీద అతనికి ఇష్టం ఏర్పడుతుంది. ఆ బైకే ప్రపంచంగా బతుకుతాడు. ఆ బైక్ ద్వారానే మేఘన (కావ్య కళ్యాణ్ రామ్) పై ప్రేమ కలుగుతుంది. ఆ బైక్ ద్వారానే సూర్య పైలెట్ కావాలనే గోల్‌ పెట్టుకుంటాడు. ఈ క్రమంలో జరిగిన నాటకీయ పరిణామాలు ఏమిటి ?, ఫైలట్‌గా మొదటిసారి ఫ్లైట్‌ ని సూర్య ఎలా హ్యాండిల్‌ చేశాడు ?, తన కెప్టెన్‌( గౌతమ్ వాసుదేవ్‌) సారథ్యంలో సూర్య ఫ్లైట్‌ ను ఎలా ల్యాండింగ్‌ చేశాడు ?, ఇంతకీ మేఘన (కావ్య కళ్యాణ్‌ రామ్‌)తో సూర్య లవ్‌ స్టోరీ ఎలా సాగింది ? అనేది మిగిలిన కథ.

మనుషుల మీదే కాదు, వస్తువుల మీద కూడా ఎమోషన్ ఉంటుంది, అవి కూడా మనుషులకు చాలా అనుభవాలు, జ్ఞాపకాలు ఇస్తాయి అనే కోణంలో సాగిన ఈ ఉస్తాద్ లో కొన్ని ఎమోషన్స్, మరియు కొన్ని కామెడీ ఎలిమెంట్స్ వర్కౌట్ అయ్యాయి. సూర్య అనే కుర్రాడి ఉస్తాద్ అనే బైక్ వల్ల వచ్చిన సంతోషం, బాధ, ముఖ్యంగా ఓ లక్ష్యం.. ఆ లక్ష్యం తాలూకు ప్రయాణం.. ఇలా ఎమోషనల్ డ్రైవ్ కొంతవరకు బాగానే ఉంది. శ్రీ సింహా కోడూరి గత తన సినిమాల్లో కంటే ఈ సినిమాలో కొత్త లుక్ తో ఫ్రెష్ గా కనిపించాడు. తన కామెడీ టైమింగ్‌ తో అక్కడక్కడా నవ్వించే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తూనే, ఇటు సెటిల్డ్ పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ తో హీరోగా తన పాత్రకి పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశాడు.

ఇక కథానాయికగా నటించిన కావ్య కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ తన స్క్రీన్ ప్రెజెన్స్ తో పాటు తన గ్లామర్ తోనూ ఆకట్టుకుంది. ముఖ్యంగా హీరో హీరోయిన్ మధ్య వచ్చే ప్రేమ సన్నివేశాలు, హీరోయిన్ ఫాదర్ కు హీరోకు మద్య సాగే సీన్స్ బాగానే ఉన్నాయి. హీరోకి తల్లి పాత్రలో నటించిన అను హాసన్ తన నటనతో ముఖ్యంగా కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ లో ఆమె చాలా బాగా నటించారు. గౌతమ్ వాసుదేవ్ మీనన్, రవీంద్ర విజయ్, వెంకటేష్ మహా మరియు మిగిలిన నటీనటులు కూడా తమ పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు బాగా చేశారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ ‘ఉస్తాద్’లో కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు బాగా స్లోగా సాగడం, అలాగే కాన్ ఫ్లిక్ట్ కూడా ఆకట్టుకునే విధంగా లేకపోవడం, ఇక మెయిన్ క్యారెక్టర్స్ సరిగ్గా కనెక్ట్ కాకపోవడం, దీనికి తోడు హీరో శ్రీ సింహా కోడూరి క్యారెక్టర్ తాలూకు గ్రాఫ్ కూడా బాగాలేకపోవడం వంటి అంశాలు సినిమాకి మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ గా నిలిచాయి. దర్శకుడు ఫణిదీప్ రాసుకున్న కాన్సెప్ట్, కొన్ని ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాలు బాగున్నప్పటికీ.. కథ కథనాలు మరీ స్లోగా సాగడం, సినిమాలో ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ మిస్ కావడం, దీనికితోడు రిపీటెడ్ సీన్స్ ఎక్కువవడం వంటి అంశాలు సినిమాకి మైనస్ అయ్యాయి.

మొత్తమ్మీద దర్శకుడు ఫణిదీప్ సినిమాని ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ గా మొదలు పెట్టి.. ఆ తర్వాత అనవసరమైన సీన్స్ తో కథను డైవర్ట్ చేశాడు. మొదటి భాగంలో కొన్ని చోట్ల సరదాగా సాగినా, రెండవ భాగం మాత్రం నెమ్మదిగా సాగుతూ బోర్ కొట్టిస్తోంది. దానికి తోడు కొన్ని సన్నివేశాల్లో నాటకీయత ఎక్కువవడంతో కథలో సహజత్వం లోపించింది. మొత్తానికి ఈ ఎమోషనల్ లవ్ స్టోరీలో కొన్ని లవ్ సీన్స్, కొన్ని సెంటిమెంట్ సీన్స్ మాత్రమే బాగున్నాయి. ఇక మిగతా పార్ట్ అంతా ప్రేక్షకులు ఓపిక తెచ్చుకుని చూడాలి. ఓవరాల్ గా సినిమాలో మంచి స్టోరీ లైన్ ఉన్నా, సినిమాలో విలువైన భావోద్వేగాన్ని పండించే సన్నివేశాలకి స్కోప్ ఉన్నా, దర్శకుడు మాత్రం ఆ దిశగా సినిమాని మలచలేదు. స్క్రీన్ ప్లే కూడా చాలా ప్రెడిక్టుబుల్ గా నడుస్తుంది.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం :

సినిమాలో చెప్పాలనుకున్న ఎమోషనల్ కంటెంట్ బాగున్నా.. కథనం ఆసక్తికరమైన ప్లోతో సాగలేదు. ఇక సంగీత దర్శకుడు అకీవ బీ సమకూర్చిన పాటలు పర్వాలేదు. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ విషయానికి వస్తే.. లొకేషన్స్ అన్ని న్యాచురల్ విజువల్స్ తో ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి. కెమెరామెన్ పవన్ కుమార్ పప్పుల వాటిని తెరకెక్కించిన విధానం బాగుంది. ఎడిటింగ్ బాగానే ఉంది. కాకపోతే సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లోని సాగతీత సన్నివేశాలను ఇంకా కొంత ట్రిమ్ చేసి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. ఈ చిత్ర నిర్మాతలు రజనీ కొర్రపాటి, రాకేష్‌ రెడ్డి గడ్డం, హిమాంక్‌ రెడ్డి దువ్వూరు పాటించిన నిర్మాణ విలువలు చాలా బాగున్నాయి.

దర్శకుడు ఫణిదీప్ ఈ ‘ఉస్తాద్’ స్క్రిప్ట్ ను ఇంకా పగడ్బందీగా రాసుకొని ఉండి ఉంటే…ఈ చిత్రం ఓ ఫీల్ గుడ్ లవ్ స్టోరీ అండ్ ఎమోషనల్ జర్నీ అయ్యి ఉండేది. కానీ, స్క్రిప్ట్ లో లోపాలు కారణంగా ఈ సినిమా ఆకట్టుకోలేకపోయింది. కథాకథనాలు స్లోగా సాగడం, సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ మిస్ అవ్వడం వంటి అంశాలు సినిమాకి మైనస్ అయ్యాయి. ఓవరాల్ గా ఈ సినిమాలో కొన్ని ఎమోషన్స్ మాత్రమే కనెక్ట్ అవుతాయి.

‘మ‌ త్తువ‌ద‌ల‌రా’ చిత్రంతో హీరోగా తొలి అడుగులోనే ఓ చ‌క్క‌టి విజ‌యాన్ని ఖాతాలో వేసుకున్నారు శ్రీసింహా కోడూరి (sri simha koduri). ఆ త‌ర్వాత  జ‌యాప‌జ‌యాల‌తో సంబంధం లేకుండా వైవిధ్య‌భ‌రిత‌మైన క‌థ‌ల‌తో ప్ర‌యోగాలు చేస్తూనే వ‌స్తున్నారు. ఈ క్ర‌మంలోనే ఇప్పుడాయ‌న ‘ఉస్తాద్‌’గా ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని ప‌ల‌క‌రించారు. క‌థేంటంటే: మ‌న‌సుకు న‌చ్చింది చేసుకుంటూ వెళ్లే కుర్రాడు సూర్య‌ (శ్రీసింహా). చిన్న‌ప్పుడే తండ్రి మ‌ర‌ణించ‌డంతో.. త‌ల్లే (అను హాస‌న్‌) అన్నీ తానై పెంచి పెద్ద చేస్తుంది. సూర్య‌కు ఎత్తైన ప్ర‌దేశాలంటే భ‌యం. అలాగే విప‌రీత‌మైన కోపం. ఏ భావోద్వేగాన్నైనా అప్ప‌టిక‌ప్పుడే చూపించేయ‌డం త‌న నైజం. జీవితంపై ఏ స్ప‌ష్టతా ఉండ‌దు. డిగ్రీ చ‌దివే రోజుల్లో ఓ పాత కాలం నాటి బైక్‌ను ముచ్చ‌ట‌ప‌డి కొనుక్కుంటాడు. దానికి ఉస్తాద్ అని పేరు పెట్టుకుంటాడు. అది జీవితంలోకి వ‌చ్చాక త‌న ఆనందం.. బాధ‌.. క‌ష్టం.. సుఖం.. ప్ర‌తిదీ దానితోనే పంచుకోవ‌డం మొద‌లు పెడ‌తాడు. ఆ బైక్ వ‌ల్లే మేఘ‌న (కావ్యా క‌ల్యాణ్ రామ్‌) సూర్య జీవితంలోకి వ‌స్తుంది. ఇద్ద‌రూ ప్రేమించుకుంటారు. ఆ త‌ర్వాత సూర్య‌కు పైల‌ట్ అవ్వాల‌న్న ల‌క్ష్యం ఏర్ప‌డుతుంది.  మ‌రి ఎత్తైన ప్ర‌దేశాలంటే భ‌య‌ప‌డే సూర్య పైల‌ట్ అవ్వాల‌న్న త‌న క‌ల‌ను ఎలా నెర‌వేర్చుకున్నాడు? ఈ క్ర‌మంలో త‌న‌కెదురైన స‌వాళ్లేంటి? (ustaad telugu movie review) త‌న వ్య‌క్తిత్వం వ‌ల్ల ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌లో వ‌చ్చిన చిక్కులేంటి?  వీట‌న్నింటినీ సూర్య ఎలా ప‌రిష్క‌రించుకున్నాడు? ఈ ప్ర‌యాణంలో ఉస్తాద్ అత‌ని జీవితాన్ని ఎలా ప్ర‌భావితం చేసింది? ఈ క‌థ‌లో బైక్ మెకానిక్ బ్ర‌హ్మం (ర‌వీంద్ర విజ‌య్‌), పైల‌ట్‌ జోసెఫ్ డిసౌజా (గౌత‌మ్ మేన‌న్‌) పాత్ర‌ల‌కున్న ప్రాధాన్య‌త ఏంట‌న్న‌ది తెర‌పై చూసి తెలుసుకోవాలి.

ఎలా సాగిందంటే:  సూర్య అనే ఓ మ‌ధ్య‌త‌ర‌గ‌తి కుర్రాడి జీవిత క‌థ ఇది. పాతకాలం నాటి ఓ డొక్కు బైక్ అత‌ని జీవితాన్ని ఎలా ప్ర‌భావితం చేసింది.. ఎత్తైన ప్ర‌దేశాలు చూస్తే భ‌య‌ప‌డే ఆ కుర్రాడు ఆకాశంలో ఎగ‌రాల‌ని ఎందుకు అనుకున్నాడు? త‌న క‌ల‌ని నెర‌వేర్చుకునే క్ర‌మంలో ఎదురైన స‌వాళ్ల‌ను ఎలా అధిగ‌మించాడు? అన్న‌ది క్లుప్తంగా ఈ చిత్ర క‌థాంశం. ఈ మొత్తం క‌థను మూడు ద‌శ‌ల్లో తెర‌పై చూపించాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. సూర్య కాలేజీ జీవితం.. మేఘ‌న‌తో అత‌ని ప్రేమ ప్ర‌యాణంతో ప్ర‌ధ‌మార్ధం సాగుతుంది. ఆకాశంలో ఎగ‌రాల‌న్న త‌న క‌ల‌ను నెర‌వేర్చుకునేందుకు సూర్య ఏం చేశాడు..  త‌న ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌ను ఎలా గెలిపించుకున్నాడ‌న్న‌ది ద్వితీయార్ధంలో చూపించారు. ఈ మొత్తం క‌థ‌ను ఓ బైక్‌తో ముడిపెట్టి భావోద్వేగ‌భ‌రితంగా చెప్పిన తీరు మెప్పిస్తుంది. అయితే చాలా నెమ్మ‌దిగా సాగే క‌థ‌నం ప్రేక్ష‌కుల స‌హ‌నానికి ప‌రీక్ష పెడుతుంది.(ustaad telugu movie review) సూర్య బాల్యం.. తండ్రితో ఉన్న అనుబంధాన్ని ప‌రిచ‌యం చేస్తూ సినిమాని ఆరంభించిన తీరు ఫ‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తుంది. అత‌ను కాలేజీలోకి అడుగు పెట్ట‌డం.. సీనియ‌ర్లు ర్యాగింగ్ చేయ‌డం.. వాళ్ల‌పై కోపంతో బైక్ నేర్చుకోవాల‌నుకోవ‌డం.. ఈ క్ర‌మంలో బండి నేర్చుకునేందుకు త‌ను ప‌డ్డ అవ‌స్థ‌ల‌తో తొలి 30నిమిషాలు సాగుతుంది. ఈత‌తంగ‌మంతా సాగ‌తీత వ్య‌వ‌హారమే. మేఘ‌న‌తో సూర్య ఎప్పుడైతే ప్రేమ‌లో ప‌డ‌తాడో.. అక్క‌డి నుంచే క‌థ‌లో కాస్త క‌ద‌లిక మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. వీళ్లిద్ద‌రి ప‌రిచ‌యం.. ఒక‌రినొక‌రు ఇష్ట‌ప‌డ‌టం.. ఇద్ద‌రూ క‌లిసి చేసే ప్ర‌యాణం ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా ఉంటుంది.  ఈ ల‌వ్ ట్రాక్‌ను ఎంతో స‌హ‌జంగా ఆవిష్క‌రించే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు.

ఇక మ‌ధ్య‌లో ఉస్తాద్‌కు.. బైక్ మెకానిక్ బ్ర‌హ్మంకు మ‌ధ్య వ‌చ్చే ఎపిసోడ్స్ కూడా మ‌న‌సుల్ని హ‌త్తుకుంటాయి. సూర్య‌కు ఆకాశంలో ఎగ‌రాల‌న్న ల‌క్ష్యం ఏర్ప‌డ్డాక క‌థ మ‌రో మ‌లుపు తిరుగుతుంది. విరామ స‌న్నివేశాలు ద్వితీయార్ధంపై ఆస‌క్తి పెంచేలా ఉంటాయి. ఓవైపు సూర్య పైల‌ట్ అవ్వ‌డం కోసం ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు ప్రారంభించ‌డం.. మ‌రోవైపు మేఘ‌న తన తండ్రి ద‌గ్గ‌ర‌ ప్రేమ విష‌యాన్ని బ‌య‌ట‌పెట్ట‌డం.. ఒక్క‌సారిగా క‌థ ర‌స‌వ‌త్త‌రంగా మారుతుంది. (ustaad telugu movie review) మేఘ‌న తండ్రితో సూర్య మాట్లాడే స‌న్నివేశాలు.. ఆ సంద‌ర్భంలో అత‌ను ప‌లికే సంభాష‌ణ‌లు యువ‌త‌రాన్ని మెప్పిస్తాయి. సూర్య - మేఘ‌న ప్రేమ‌క‌థ‌లో స‌మ‌స్య‌లు మొద‌లైన‌ప్ప‌టి నుంచి క‌థ కాస్త గాడి త‌ప్పిన‌ట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. మేఘ‌న ప్రేమ‌కు దూర‌మైన సంద‌ర్భంలో సూర్య ప‌డే ఆవేద‌న.. ఆ స‌మ‌యంలో అత‌ని  త‌ల్లి స్ఫూర్తినింపే తీరు ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. సూర్య పైల‌ట్‌గా మారే తీరు..  ఈ క్ర‌మంలో ఎదుర్కొన్న స‌వాళ్లు ఏమాత్రం ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా అనిపించ‌వు.

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే:  సూర్య పాత్ర‌లో శ్రీసింహా చ‌క్క‌గా ఒదిగిపోయారు. ఇది న‌టుడిగా త‌న‌ని మ‌రో మెట్టు పైకి ఎక్కించే పాత్ర‌. ఆ పాత్ర‌లోని మూడు కోణాల్ని ఆవిష్క‌రించ‌డానికి సింహా శ‌క్తిమేర‌కు కృషి చేశాడు. భావోద్వేగ‌భ‌రిత స‌న్నివేశాల్లో త‌న‌దైన న‌ట‌న‌తో క‌ట్టిప‌డేశాడు. మేఘ‌న పాత్ర‌లో కావ్యా కల్యాణ్ రామ్ ఎంతో స‌హ‌జంగా క‌నిపించింది. న‌ట‌న‌కు ప్రాధాన్య‌మున్న పాత్రిది. ఆ పాత్ర‌ను ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు రాసుకున్న తీరు బాగుంది. ఆమెకు.. సింహాకు మ‌ధ్య వ‌చ్చే ప్రేమ స‌న్నివేశాలు చాలా స‌హ‌జంగా ఉన్నాయి. ఇద్ద‌రి మ‌ధ్య కెమిస్ట్రీ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. హీరో త‌ల్లిగా అను హాస‌న్ త‌న‌దైన న‌ట‌న‌తో క‌ట్టిప‌డేస్తుంది. ఆ పాత్ర‌ను కూడా ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు చ‌క్క‌గా తీర్చిదిద్దుకున్నాడు.(ustaad telugu movie review) బైక్ మెకానిక్ బ్ర‌హ్మం పాత్ర ప్రేక్ష‌కుల మ‌దిలో ప్ర‌త్యేకంగా గుర్తుండిపోతుంది. ఆ పాత్రను ముగించిన తీరు భావోద్వేగ‌భ‌రితంగా ఉంటుంది. గౌత‌మ్ మేన‌న్, వెంక‌టేష్ మ‌హా ప్ర‌త్యేక పాత్ర‌ల్లో క‌నిపిస్తారు. ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు త‌న నిజ జీవితంలోని అనుభ‌వాల ఆధారంగా ఈ క‌థ‌ను అల్లుకున్నారు. దాన్ని అనుకున్న‌ట్లుగా నిజాయితీగా తెర‌పై ఆవిష్క‌రించే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశాడు.   What’s it about?

Surya (Sri Simha Koduri), a rookie pilot, spends his first day on the job alongside his senior pilot (Gowtham Menon). While it is Simha’s first day on the job, it is his senior’s last. When Surya makes an error, the senior pilot chastises him for being impulsive.

Then Surya tells his story of how his impulsiveness got him thus far.

Surya is raised by his single mother (Anu Haasan) after the death of his father in a small town near Hyderabad. He buys an old bike and christens it Ustaad. The bike causes numerous changes in his life, including the arrival of Meghana (Kavya Kalyan Ram). However, his short temper and uncompromising attitude cause problems in his love life.

The rest of the story is about how he overcame all obstacles and became a pilot.

  Analysis

On paper, the idea of a bike changing a man’s life and propelling him to become a pilot is interesting. “Ustaad” has this line. When the protagonist’s bike breaks down, something nice happens to him, such as the opportunity to meet his girlfriend for the first time, witnessing a runway outside of a hillock and being inspired to become a pilot, and so on. On the other hand, he is stubborn and impulsive. The director juggles these aspects to tell the “Ustaad” plot.

However, the director Phanideep (likely a first-timer) has struggled to narrate it in an engaging manner. The entire first half has us fidgeting in our seats.

I’ve noticed that most current young directors (mainly newcomers/upcoming directors) lack the capacity to evaluate whether content is appropriate for a feature film or short film. Furthermore, the majority of them are creating stories based on their personal experiences (which is a good thing. Actually, the screenwriting gurus always encourage writers to write about the world they know), but they lack the abilities to adapt those highly personal experiences into a captivating narrative. Many scenes in “Ustaad” made me feel the same way. Some of the occurrences in the film may have had a deep resonance for the director, but they make for an uninteresting viewing experience for us.

For example, the romantic scenes between Sri Simha and Kavya Kalyan Ram are interesting at first, but the later portions, as well as Kavya’s and Sri Simha’s unexpected actions, do not make sense to us. Another thread of a mechanic has the same problem. The mechanic’s behavior becomes increasingly unrealistic and stagey.

Among the nicest scenes for me were hero’s mother (a single parent) and hero speaking on the roof of their house. It’s a beautiful moment when the son realizes her mother’s resilience.

Sri Simha Koduri passes the muster as an impetuous youngster. Anu Haasan also does a good job as a mother. Kavya Kalyanram, best known for her role in Balagam, has a commanding screen presence. Ravi Siva Teja brings some laughs.

The technical departments performed just okay.

Bottom line: “Ustaad” is a coming-of-age story with a few pleasant moments but a monotonous viewing experience on the whole. The amateurishness with which the narration is handled can be seen throughout.

"Ustaad" is the latest film featuring Sri Simha Koduri, the son of MM Keeravani. In an eleventh-hour effort to promote the film, director SS Rajamouli and Nani engaged in promotional activities. 

Now, let's delve into its strengths and weaknesses.

Story: The story is set in United Andhra Pradesh a decade ago. Surya (Sri Simha Koduri) is a pilot who grew up in a small town near Hyderabad. On his first day in the cockpit, he runs into the pilot (Gautam Vasudev Menon) who will be retiring that day.

They start talking, and Surya tells him about how his life was altered by his motorcycle, Ustaad, how he came to be in love with Meghana (Kavya Kalyan Ram), and how his mother instilled in him the confidence to succeed in life.

The film runs for over two hours and tells the story of his struggles in love as well as the true motivations that led him to become a pilot.

Artistes’ Performances: Sri Simha Koduri comes across as sincere, and he does a neat job of playing an impulsive young man. ‘Balagam' fame Kavya Kalyan Ram's performance in a relatively simple role is good. There are some good scenes for Anu Haasan, who plays the hero's mother, and she delivers.

As a fascinating mechanic, Ravindra Vijay holds his own. Ravi Siva Teja as the hero's pal provides some comedic relief.

Technical Excellence: The film seems to have made on a low budget. The technical and production qualities are just barely adequate. The music goes unnoticed.

Analysis Moment-driven stories like 'Ustaad' require a compelling narrative to maintain the audience's interest. Filmmakers such as Gautham Menon and Sandeep Vanga have employed this technique to create timeless works.

Director Phanideep, seemingly inspired by these directors, has penned a script about an impulsive young man and attempted to chronicle his journey, but he lacks the verve to do so.

On paper, the concept of a motorcycle transforming a man's life and propelling him to become a pilot is thrilling. However, the director has struggled to convey it in an engaging manner.

The story unfolds in a small town near Hyderabad before the state was divided, an era devoid of smartphones. As a result, we witness the hero and heroine conversing on the porch and engaging in simple yet charming romantic sequences.

A significant subplot involves a drunken mechanic, an expert in bikes, who mentors the hero on trusting machines. He posits that machines remain faithful whereas humans deceive. However, this extended thread becomes tiresome after a certain point and would have benefited from brevity.

It's only after the interval that the film starts to find its footing, offering moments of enjoyment. The final half-hour, in particular, surpasses the preceding drama.

The decision to depict the protagonist as a pilot adds a positive dimension to the film. Thus, we partake in the Youngman's inaugural piloting experience. Additionally, two sequences involving the hero and his mother leave a lasting impression.

While the intentions are commendable and the efforts sincere, the narrative fails to grip. Overall, 'Ustaad' doesn't deliver an engaging experience, despite sporadic moments of brilliance.

‘Ustaad’ movie review: A slow drive

Sri SimhaKoduri, who has been entertaining audiences with his different scripts, has now come up with the film “Ustaad.” Directed by Phanideep, the film has Kavya Kalyanram as the female lead. “Ustaad” hit the screens, and let’s see how it fares at box-office.

The film is about Surya (Sri SimhaKoduri), an aimless youngster. His life takes a complete turn after he purchases his first bike. It is named “Ustaad” by a mechanic played by Ravindra Vijay. Surya gets emotionally attached to his bike, which stimulates him to become a pilot. Also, he falls in love with Meghana (Kavya Kalyanram). But Surya faces roadblocks in his love life. What are they? How did Surya sort them out? Did Surya achieve his dream? This forms part plot of the story.

Performances

Sri SimhaKoduri plays the role of Surya in “Ustaad,” who dreams of becoming a pilot and fights against all the odds in life to achieve his dream. He effortlessly pulls off scenes where he shows anger and other emotions to the other characters in the story. The actor has once again proved that his plot selection is not only versatile but also has great scope for performance. He is natural in his appearance and performance, both as the boy next door and as the first officer. This will be remembered as one of his finest performances.

Kavya Kalyanram shines in the role of a bright and simple girl in love with Surya. The chemistry worked out well on the big screen.Gautham Vasudev Menon’s cameo appearance as Captain Joseph D’Souza was crisp in acting level and had well-maintained emotion throughout his screen time.All the other extended cast members have put forth good performances, which have made the film stand out.

Technicalities

Debutant director, Phanideep, he chose a very good point but didn’t succeed in translating the same onto the screen effectively. The idea of making a bike act as a catalyst agent for the protagonist’s dream is fine, but the main issue is with the narration. The first half had some decent moments, but the entire second half is filled with repetitive scenes that damper the film’s soul.

Coming to other technical aspects, a couple of songs composed by Akeeva B were good on screen. The background score is fine. The cinematography by Pavan Kumar Pappula is neat. The production values are nice. Editing can be more sharp and runtime can also be reduced.

It is the story of a man lacking a clear goal who experiences a significant shift after obtaining his first motorcycle. The bike fuels his desire for adventure, Encouraging him to rekindle his passion to become a pilot. Is passion alone enough to fulfill dreams? His family stands as a hindrance along with the financial constraints and personal struggles.

Star Performance

The lead characters were amazing in their roles. Performances of Sri Simha Koduri Gautham Vasudev Menon and Ravindra Vijay are noteworthy in the film, bringing their characters to life. The supporting roles were equally good in their respective roles. The cinematography of the film is excellent. The soundtrack of the film is good.

The movie has a new storyline with the same old concept, this new approach seems to work but still lags in some areas of the script. Sidelining the plot, the actors delivered an excellent performance. The cinematography and the soundtrack of the film are appreciatable. The editing of the film could’ve been better.
