Sample Question 1

Sample answer.

Foreign education has become one of the most sought-after ventures in this day and age. A majority of students plan on pursuing higher education in a foreign nation, especially when it comes to a master’s degree. One of the reasons why studying abroad has become such a popular phenomenon is the relaxation of travel laws and procedures across the world. However, there are pros and cons to studying abroad and the following paragraphs will explore the topic and elaborate on why the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

One of the primary reasons for studying abroad is the presence of a more refined and sophisticated education system in several first-world countries. It is common for students from underdeveloped or developing countries like Brazil, China, India, Argentina and other countries to look for better opportunities than the ones available in their native country in terms of academics. Also, residing in a foreign country helps individuals to gain international exposure and also helps them develop social and interpersonal skills, which are extremely important for being eligible for lucrative job opportunities.

Nevertheless, there are numerous drawbacks to travelling abroad for education. First of all, from the beginning of applying to a foreign university to staying in the host country for the entire duration of your degree, it is an exorbitant affair. Such a costly endeavour is often unaffordable for the household of many people. That being said, becoming accustomed to the norms and conventions of an unfamiliar country can be a tough ordeal for many due to differences in culture and social traditions.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that foreign education can be a blessing if it is financially feasible for aspiring students. That being said, the benefits of studying abroad surpass the drawbacks for the same.

Sample Question 2

Globalization has been one of the most significant phenomena in the last few decades, and it has changed several aspects of human society both economically and socially. There has been remarkable progress in terms of economic and financial development for developing countries due to the expansion of global organizations. However, there are several drawbacks to this rapid progress that need to be addressed. Evidently, globalization has more advantages than disadvantages and the following paragraphs will elaborate on the topic and justify these views.

First of all, the most advantageous aspect of globalization is the advent of numerous international companies and franchises in developing countries. Ever since global brands and corporations have expanded their operations in countries such as India, China, Sri Lanka and many more, there has been a notable increase in employment in these countries. Additionally, due to the remarkable rise in the number of imports and exports, people from third world countries now have access to a vast catalogue of products and services that were previously unattainable.

That being said, there are drawbacks to globalization that create concerning issues for a sizable portion of the global population. One of the most disturbing consequences faced is the exploitation of labour. Many corporations are known to outsource their operations to developing countries due to cheap labour costs. This enables them to accomplish their manufacturing operations without having to provide proper remuneration. Also, due to the use of inexpensive labour, the quality of products is diminished, and customers receive inferior products.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that the effects of globalization are not entirely positive or negative. Nonetheless, the benefits brought by this occupation outweigh the drawbacks.

There is no doubt that you are preparing for the IELTS Writing Task 2. So, we would recommend you to take up advantage and disadvantage essay topics regularly. The more you practice, the better you will become at solving the IELTS Writing test and answers within the dedicated timeframe.

From there, you’ll describe the advantages and disadvantages of the idea you were presented with. For more background info and advice on this particular question type, you can go to my post on the Task 2 question types in IELTS Writing.

In this article, I’ll show you a sample advantage/disadvantage prompt and a model essay that responds to the prompt. The model essay is an example of band 9 level writing—this is the highest score you can get on the Writing section. I’ve patterned the essay after this IELTS Writing Task 2 template , which was created by Magoosh IELTS expert Rachel Kapelke-Dale.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Advantages and Disadvantages Model Essay (Band 9)

Nowadays, both work and study can easily take a person out of their home country. This can be good because people can explore new cultures now more than ever. At the same time, world travelers may become disconnected from their own home countries. In this essay, I will take a closer look at the aforementioned key advantage and key disadvantage.

To be sure, ordinary people now have unprecedented access to life abroad. It is easier than ever to work or study in a foreign land for months and even years. Many large international corporations offer overseas work to their employees, just as nearly all universities provide study abroad options at partner campuses overseas. Ultimately, nearly any adult anywhere in the world can potentially immerse themselves in another language or culture, with support from their bosses or teachers.

The problem is that international workers and students sometimes become unconcerned with the affairs in the nations they are from. This kind of apathy can prevent people from doing their civic duty. As one example, people from countries with compulsory military service may spend years abroad and even renounce their citizenship to avoid protecting their homeland. Even more commonly, people who go abroad may choose not to vote in elections back home, failing to make their voice heard on important matters. So modern mobility can undermine one’s ability or desire to make a difference back home.

Learning about other cultures by actually living abroad is a powerful tool for better intercultural understanding. However, as valuable as this is, sometimes going abroad can cause people to ignore the importance of their own culture and country. Not all students and workers should go abroad, and the ones that do should not forget their role in their country of origin.

Scoring Rationale

This IELTS Writing Task 2 advantages and disadvantages sample essay is held to the same standards as any other Writing Task 2 essay. These standards are listed in the official rubric for IELTS Writing Task 2 . If you read the level 9 description carefully and compare it to this essay, you should see the reasons it has a top score. But I’ve also included scorer commentary immediately below.

Scorer Commentary (Advantage/Disadvantage IELTS Essay Sample, Band 9)

The score report below is based on the official IELTS Writing Task 2 rubric . This report also looks very similar to the Magoosh IELTS essay scoring service .

Overall Band Score: 9

CATEGORY Task Achievement/Response Coherence and Cohesion Lexical Resource Grammatical Range and Accuracy
SCORE 9 9 9 9

What was done well in the essay:

  • This essay has over 250 words. This is a small but important way to avoid needlessly losing points due to the IELTS Writing word count penalty .
  • The essay does a good job of covering both the advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of easy access to foreign experiences is explored in the first body paragraph. The disadvantages of becoming too distant from one’s home community is similarly explored in the second paragraph.
  • Each paragraph has a clear topic sentence, followed by supporting details, examples, and a concluding sentence that wraps things up nicely.
  • Transitional phrases such as “to be sure” and “even more commonly” are used to clearly link ideas between paragraphs and within paragraphs.
  • Vocabulary and grammar are used very fluently; this essay is free of any serious errors in this aspect of English.

Hi Paromita,

If you can support these ideas in the essay and explain why they are disadvantages, then that could work if your reasoning is sound.

Hope that helps! 😀

IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer Essay: Advertisements & Needs (Real Past IELTS Exam/Test)

Some believe that people will purchase a product based on their needs and advertising is not needed. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many have argued that advertisement serves no real purpose as necessity motivates all purchases. I disagree with this completely because ads give consumers a minimum guarantee of quality and also develop wants into needs.

First of all, advertising is the most direct way to inform customers of a given product’s quality. The content of the ad is less important than the fact they were able to produce, distribute and, oftentimes, get a celebrity endorsement. For example, KFC typically signs the most famous football players to massive sponsorship deals, thereby evidencing the continued relevance and quality of their food. When a lesser known company premiers an advertisement this is evidence that they are generating enough revenue to validate whatever product they sell or service they provide.

Secondly, advertising does not simply meet needs; it creates them. Most people could live more fulfilling lives with fewer products but advertising stimulates desires by appealing to consumer psychology and those initial wants eventually become habitual. A good example of this would be the rise of Apple products in the last two decades and the role of advertising in making them popular. Apple phones and computers are famed not only for their quality but also the sense of being part of a community of users. Stylish ads like the ‘think different’ campaign helped foster their dominance. Now the desire to become part of the Apple community and appear cool has become a basic need for many users hooked into the Apple ecosystem of high-quality consumer electronics.

In conclusion, advertising serves an important role in society. This does not mean that it should not be regulated, simply that consumers and officials should be mindful of the full contribution of advertisers.

When a lesser known company premiers an advertisement this is evidence that they are generating enough revenue to validate whatever product they sell or service they provide .

Secondly, advertising does not simply meet needs; it creates them. Most people could live more fulfilling lives with fewer products but advertising stimulates desires by appealing to consumer psychology and those initial wants eventually become habitual . A good example of this would be the rise of Apple products in the last two decades and the role of advertising in making them popular. Apple phones and computers are famed not only for their quality but also the sense of being part of a community of users . Stylish ads like the ‘think different’ campaign helped foster their dominance . Now the desire to become part of the Apple community and appear cool has become a basic need for many users hooked into the Apple ecosystem of high-quality consumer electronics.

In conclusion, advertising serves an important role in society. This does not mean that it should not be regulated , simply that consumers and officials should be mindful of the full contribution of advertisers.

This structure is very different from your other essays. Where you talk about both the views. Which is your preferred way? Personally I like discussing both the views because varying grammar structure could be used easily.

Dave

Yes, I strongly agree – I prefer writing about both sides because then I can have distinct main ideas and it feels more balanced.

I write essays like this every once in a while because sometimes students want to see a fully agree/disagree essay.

Hi.I’ve written this essay and I stand in partially agree position. Do you think it answers the task and is it consistent throughout this essay? Need some feedbacks and thank you in advance.

It is often said that the advertisements are no longer needed since customers buy goods only when they need it. While I accept people may purchase certain things based on their needs, I also believe that advertising still essential to attract shoppers. People buy basic necessities regularly to fulfil their daily needs. It can be food or household equipment that most people do not need to watch its advertisements before making purchases. It is because these things have general functions that the public already knows. As an example, people would buy vegetables, fruits and meats when they run out of stock or purchase pans and plates when these have broken. Thus, advertising does not have significant impacts on customers regarding daily and basic things. Admittedly, advertisement plays a vital role in business. Companies need to promote their latest products along with its specifications to shoppers through advertisements. For instance, a new smartphone company from China, Realme, advertises its up-to-date mobile devices and exposing its flawless design and its distinctive features. Although this producer just has been established three years ago, because of its unique and eye-catching advertisements, it becomes the second-highest sales of smartphone across the world. It proves that advertising also encourages economic growth through customers’ demand. Moreover, in this technological era, advertisements are published on social media and streaming websites, such as Facebook, Netflix and Youtube, in order to reach potential buyers globally. Thus, advertisements are still needed. In conclusion, the majority of people will directly buy daily needs whenever they need it, but I also perceive that advertising will still exist due to its importance.

I think that there is some confusion about ‘partial agreement’ essays. First of all, don’t write them at all because they are risky!

It is possible to write one but hard to make it a clear opinion and the risk is that you get an automatic band 5 or lower for task achievement.

If you really want to write in that style then you must alter your opinion a bit. Your support and examples are really strong and I would advise you to just choose an overall side.

Rewrite your opinion in the intro and conlusion and I will check it again and let you know if it is ok.

Hoang

Hi Dave, I agree with your idea about the risk of unclear viewpoint when the writer adopts this stand – partial agreement. But i did notice one more point. The writer seems to have lost focus in the 2nd body para as the FOCUS of this essay should be about the NEED of advertising for SHOOPERS rather than other people. Please tell me if i am right, here.

Hi Hoang, I don’t think there is a real distinction – the question just mentions ‘people’ and naturally everyone fits into the category of a consumer so it is fine to write about people/consumers/shoppers interchangeably.

Does that make it clearer for you?

Shinzo

Many are of the view that products are bought based on requirements of consumer regardless of advertisement. In my opinion, although technology assists the buyer to make an informed purchase, promotions are essential to creating a brand image.

Those who cite advertisement are redundant and shopping is driven by the necessity highlight the usage of technology. Most of the consumers usually know what they are looking for in a product and they are well-informed about the advantages and the disadvantages of it because of various internet tools available on e-commerce websites. For example, if a passionate buyer wants to buy a smart-phone or a computer, he can compare different models offered by different companies side by side and weigh one against the other and make a well-informed choice, without being influenced by any celebrity endorsements.

Despite the aforementioned reason, I believe advisement is paramount how a brand is perceived by the customer. Many times, advertisements do not highlight features of a product, it just wants to make an association with something else. There are numerous examples of this, Coca-Cola a billion dollars company is successful in coupling a sugary drink with the “happiness” all because of persistent advisement, clever product placements in TV shows and charm of its brand-ambassadors. A result of it is that a summer party is incomplete without a bottle of soft drink.

In conclusion, I disagree with this opinion because repeated advertisement imprints on human subconscious mind and we are unknowingly attracted towards well-marketed products. However, the government should keep on regulating misleading ads and aware customers about the mal-practices by the large corporations.

Well written Shinzo!

Your opinion is a bit unclear in the intro – make it cleare by saying that technology has replaced the need for advertisiting in some ways…

Really good examples and support – keep writing in that style!

Careful with your referencing of plural pronouns: it/they.

As well as your use of the definite article ‘the’ to reference: ‘The results of this is that…’

Work on your referencing a lot because your ideas and support are really strong – I’m jealous even!

Thank you! For your comments. Earlier, I used to think ‘it’ and ‘this’ are interchangeable. :p All because of your sample essays and Facebook video I am able to think in right direction. I follow your golden tip: An example is the meat of body paragraph.

Thanks so much – I’m really happy to help and really enjoyed reading your essays because the ideas flowed and built so beautifully!

I hope your examiner feels the same way as me…

Please assess this

It is argued by some people that there is no need of telecasting adverts as they will buy things as per their requirement. While exaggeration of product in adverts convince buyers to purchase the product, I feel that these are necessary to make people aware and give introduction about products.

Advertisements, these days, are usually exaggerated and attractive, which persuade consumers to buy their product that they do not need. Fair and lovely, for example, a very famous beauty cream, claims that it can fair people’s skin color in 15 days. Although this brand has to confront with many cases due to its false promise, it is still earning significant amount of profit by casting beautiful models and showing varied results of the product. Hence, people end up purchasing those products.

Nevertheless, adverts make people aware about the products and their respective choices that are available in the market. For instance, these days, several brands of mobile phones are available and with the help of advertisements one can choose their cellphone according to required features as well as budget. This results satisfaction among consumers, which is less likely to be possible without advertisements.

Moreover, customers can get a glimpse of the product’s features that they want to buy. This makes the process of choosing product easier. Advertisements of cosmetic products, for example, render the skin type at which these would be most suitable, which assist consumers to buy the appropriate one.

In conclusion, even though adverts can make people buy unwanted products, I believe that these are instrumental in customers’ life.

Some small mistakes with articles, over-paraphrasing, nice development of your ideas but some small issues with the vocabulary – clear opinion – keep working hard!

Dave, is this less than 7 band essay?

Yes, probably a bit below at this point.

Merve

Hello Dave, How do you thing is my essay can achieve band 6.5 ? I’m new a new starter , thank you for your help.

The world we live in today is fully invaded by advertisements. Therefore, a lot of people do not prefer being affected by ads while purchasing a merchandise and so they will be able to buy what exactly necessary for them. In my opinion, although there are some useful advertisements, still it causes excessive expenses due to it encourages buying products which is not needed or unnecessary.

We see ads in all part of our life in consequence of marketing improvement techniques. There are advertisements on television, in the street and on any devices, which has connection to the internet. If someone needs any product, he can search it on the web without having a difficulty and compare features among numerous of brands. For instance, if someone needs a car, searching brands’ advertisements on their websites gives opportunity to find everything they need easily and fast, furthermore he can make a comparison between models which is submitted.

On the other hand, advertisements manage people feelings to be bought by them. Almost all baby advertisements we see if the mother supply the advertised merchandise to her child, the mother herself and the baby are smile and become happy. Therefore, families inevitably find themselves in an extravagant expenditure. Moreover, in case of families not able to afford these products to their children that may damaged them emotionally.

Being exposed to all these advertisements will have been continue in our society. In spite of some advantages of marketing, it is still a controversial issue. However, in many cases advertisements use people weakness thus encourage them to buy unnecessary, unreliable, and even unhealthy products that cause a vast expenditure by people.

Good effort Merve!

mary

sorry teacher what do u mean by the last sentence>>> officials should be mindful of the full contribution of advertisers.???

Hi Mary, it means that people in the government should be worried/concerned about the effect of advertising.

Is that clear?

Jashan

Hi Dave, To be honestly frank, i had a thing with the second body para as i find it hard to EMBRACE the idea of TURNING WANTS INTO NEEDS as the ideas the to words suggest are different. The desires to join the APPLE ecosystem – as given in the example – is still the WANT rather than the NEED. For me, your choice of THIS kind of product demonstrates yourpreferences, so it s more toward the WANT end . Anither thing is about the conclusion, the mentioning of REGULATION of ads seems out of place to me as the task does not ask us to write about this, and the body of the essay does not mention this idea.

Could you help me make it clear, pls.

Thanks a million in advance.

Hi Hoang, I think the idea is a little complex but it basically means that people start to consider their ‘wants’ as ‘needs’ – for instance, people feel they need the newest phone.

That means the desire becomes so strong that, in the consumer’s mind, a want has become a need.

The last one is just a final thought and isn’t that strict.

Is that clearer?

Many thanks, Master.

No problem, Hoang!

Nhat Hoang

Hi Dave, please have a look at this essay and give your comments. i have tried to keep it to the time limit of under 40 mins.

many thanks in advance.

Recently, people have witnessed the prevalence of advertising which seeks to persuade them to consume more. However, some hold the idea that it is people’s needs that will prompt purchases, and thus there is no need for advertising. I do not totally agree with this notion. It is true that there are some products that people buy regardless of the existence of advertising. A case in point is the consumption of bare essentials, such as food, clothes, household appliances; when people run out of these products at home, they must buy them. This proves that advertising may not be relevant here.  Having said that, consumers can enjoy great benefits from product promotions. First, they can make the best possible buys by comparing features and specifications to finalise their decisions according to their needs. For example, if a shopper wants to buy a new smartphone and has a choice between Iphone and Samsung, it is the advertisements that can help them get more information about the products and make more informed choices. More importantly, it is the financial aspect that concerns many people. Indeed, advertising provides people with mechanical information as well as the price. People can compare the prices of different products from different companies, suppliers or shops before making their choices. For example,  a phone shopper can make comparisons of prices of the same phone from different shops to get the best deal. Therefore, advertising helps consumers financially. In conclusion, while there are certain products that demand no advertising, this activity still benefits shoppers with regard to their needs and financial means. Hence, I believe that there is still high demand for advertising in society.

It won’t just give you a clear understanding of the answer structure, but it will also equip you with valuable skills to develop coherent and cohesive responses. So, let’s dive into some sample answers and see how to tackle these questions effectively.

Sample 1

  • Question: These days, many people like to watch live performances (like shows or concerts) at home, either on TV or on a computer, instead of attending in person. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh its disadvantages?

Ans: The advent of technology has revolutionised the way we consume entertainment with a growing trend of watching live performances, such as concerts and shows, at home through TV or computer, instead of attending in person. This essay will explore the advantages and disadvantages of this trend and evaluate whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

To begin with, the most significant advantage of watching live performances at home is convenience. With busy schedules and geographical constraints, attending a live performance in person can be challenging for many. Watching these performances at home eliminates travel time and costs, and allows viewers to enjoy the show at their own pace. Moreover, it provides an opportunity for people living in remote areas or those with mobility issues to experience performances they might otherwise miss. Another advantage is the potential for a larger audience. Performances broadcasted on TV or streamed online can reach millions of viewers worldwide, far exceeding the capacity of any physical venue. This not only benefits viewers who get to enjoy a wider variety of performances but also performers who gain increased exposure and potential revenue.

However, this trend is not without its disadvantages. The most notable one is the lack of atmosphere and communal experience that attending a live performance offers. The energy of the crowd, the immediacy of the performance, and the shared experience with fellow attendees are unique aspects that cannot be replicated in a home setting. Furthermore, there is a risk that this trend could lead to a decline in traditional performing arts venues. If more people choose to watch performances at home, these venues might struggle to survive, leading to potential job losses in the industry and a loss of cultural heritage.

In conclusion, while watching live performances at home offers numerous advantages such as convenience and accessibility, it also has its drawbacks including a diminished atmosphere and potential harm to traditional venues. However, considering the increasing globalisation and digitalization of our world, it seems that the advantages do outweigh the disadvantages. The key lies in finding a balance – leveraging technology to make performances more accessible while still preserving and supporting traditional venues.

Question: In many cities, problems related to overpopulation are becoming more common. Some governments are now encouraging businesses and individuals to move out of cities to rural areas. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?

Ans: In recent years, the issue of overpopulation has become a pressing concern in many cities around the world. As a result, some governments are encouraging businesses and individuals to move to rural areas. While there are some benefits to this trend, it also has its drawbacks. In this essay, I will discuss how the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages.

On the one hand, there are several advantages to encouraging businesses and individuals to move to rural areas. First and foremost, it can help to alleviate the problem of overpopulation in cities. With fewer people living in urban areas, there will be less strain on infrastructure and resources such as housing, transportation, and water. Moreover, moving to rural areas can lead to a lower cost of living. Land, property, and goods tend to be cheaper in rural areas, which can save people money in the long run.

Additionally, moving to a rural area can offer a more peaceful and tranquil way of life, away from the noise, pollution, and stresses of city living.

On the other hand, there are also several disadvantages to this trend. One of the biggest drawbacks is the lack of infrastructure and services in rural areas. Many rural areas do not have the same level of access to healthcare, education, and other essential services as urban areas do.

This can make it difficult for businesses and individuals to thrive and succeed. Furthermore, moving to a rural area can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, especially for those who are used to the hustle and bustle of city life. Finally, for those who depend on urban jobs or have family ties in cities, moving to a rural area may not be a feasible option.

In conclusion, while there are some benefits to encouraging businesses and individuals to move to rural areas, the disadvantages should not be overlooked. It is essential to consider the lack of infrastructure and services in rural areas, as well as the potential feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Therefore, governments need to strike a balance between encouraging people to move to rural areas and ensuring that there are adequate resources and services available to support them.

So that was all about IELTS Advantages and Disadvantages essays. Hope the blog could have covered all your queries regarding the topic.

Ans: These essays require students to state the negatives and positives of the given topic.

Ans: These essays are segregated into three segments, i.e., introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Ans: The IELTS writing section takes around 60 minutes to complete.

IELTS essay, topic: Advertising affects what people think is important and has a negative effect on their lives (agree/disagree)

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8
  • by Simone Braverman

Today people are surrounded by advertising. This affects what people think is important and has a negative impact on people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

With the advent of the Internet, advertisements, originally displayed only on TV, billboards, posters and so on, are becoming increasingly ubiquitous and commonplace for the general public. In my view, this kind of impact could be both crucial and, on a certain level, detrimental.

On the one hand, this phenomenon could denote that although we have already had a diverse range of , people are still capable of inventing innovative approaches catering for all kinds of requirements of advertising. It is a symbol that demonstrates the creativity rooted in human beings. Apart from that, it also represents that the speed of spreading information is conspicuously escalating. More purposeful is, therefore, the fact that, besides booming of the advertising, it constitutes a major reason why people could be so prosperous in this digital age.

advantages and disadvantages of advertising essay ielts

On the other hand, there are various unpleasant consequences as well. Firstly, with the omnipresent , it could potentially cause people to do impulsive shopping. Secondly, the , if regulated in a mismanaged , could make people constantly feel uncomfortable or annoyed. In this sense, instead of being an instrumental tool to promote amenities, advertisements could be considered a hindrance when people are frequently blocked by them. Furthermore, it would cost one precious time to have to sift the helpful ad from a host of others.

In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, advertising is a beneficial phenomenon for all with a number of insignificant drawbacks. I believe that in the future we can improve the way advertising is done at present, and embrace the positive influence of advertising even further in the long run.

This essay is another example of what Band 8 writing may look like. It’s weak point is that the author goes slightly off-topic while trying to discuss whether advertising affects what people view as important and instead talks about the reason advertising is spreading and about human creativity. However, the other part of task type (negative effects of advertising) is covered well, the ideas are well-developed and supported. There is a clear logical flow of information and a range of transitional words is used appropriately to sequence ideas. The way author uses synonyms to rephrase the task topic in the intro paragraph demonstrates their lexical skill, which is also evident in other parts of this essay. There are many complex sentences and very few errors. Overall, this essay seems worthy of IELTS Band 8.0.

Advertisement has the main role of developing countries. advertisement is shown on the internet ,tv or radio .it has good aspects as well as bad aspects.it gets more income for the company All the company dont show their products or facilities on tv or internet .for example, one company show his product and gets more money but another company dont show his product and dont get money. On the other hand ,it helps purchasers to know the quality of the product before they buy it .also ,the company and tv or radio benefit of advertising the product In conclusion, advertisment has more advantage than disadvantage ,it helps people enjoy todays life in the world

Nowadays, people are enveloped with the advertisements of many product and services offered by the companies as well as individuals. Modern marketing techniques has impacted the public on a high scale to decide what is good, bad, essential and important to them. Necessarily, in my opinion, advertising is required to reach out to the customers while keeping them authentic. In this ever-growing competitive world, organizations as well as local sellers find it challenging to sell their products due to the availability of many alternatives. One of the best ways to promote their services are through novel publicizing ideas that should reach the target customers. On the other end, the needy customer may not know about an existing item if it doesn\’t appear in their day to day activities, and so, it is imperative to bring them to their doorsteps. When many commercials persuade the audience to buy their product with false and incorrect information, others do it truthfully whose core business ethics is strong. Finding a difference between a bogus and genuine advertisement lies within the audience\’s virtue. Easily manipulative people often end up losing their hard-earned money and trust in these fake companies & their products. Moreover, the public often think or enquire less, when an instant application of that product is necessary. For instance, a diabetic patient who falls short in his/her daily supplies would opt for an alternative medicine without looking deep into its credibility that can exacerbate their medical condition. In conclusion, the media board of the country should step up their measures to ensure the authenticity of the advertisements before they reach the public regardless the medium, whether it is through television, digital media, postures, banners, etc.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of advertisements

Recently it has been seen that advertising is getting very popular in all fields of trade. With the advent of technology, there is a huge trend of publicity of different brands all over the world. Although there are tremendous advantages of advertisement but there are some drawbacks too. This essay will elaborate both points of views with final conclusion. It is seen that advertisement is becoming an important part of setting news buisness. Many resources like social media and television are helpful for publicity. One of benefit of advertisement is that it helps for better selling of a trade . For example tourisam is effected with good and attractive publicity. People are more informed about the product. Another attraction of advertisement is that it provides more options for buyers. This is good way of saving time too. For example someone can make more choices to buy a computer even without wondering around in markets. Thus it seems that advertisement has benefited seller and buyer both. At the same time advertisement has some disadvantages too . This can cause a competition between different trades. For example some people can spend more money to attract buyers for their low quality products. This way people can be fooled with fake publicity. Secondly too much advertisement make confusions for buyer for selection of products. Sometimes people buy un necessary stuff . This way there is waste of money. So some people think that advertisement has more negative effects on buisness. In conclusion, although advertisement is getting popularity but it has its own problems. It is recommended that if an advertisement is done with real honesty it will show more better results and will be more beneficial for everyone.

Preparation for the IELTS Exam

IELTS advantage disadvantage essays

Three types of advantage disadvantage essays.

Updated: June 2022

Not only are there 5 types of essay questions in academic IELTS but there are 3 types of Advantage Disadvantage essays, here are some examples below and ideas on how to approach them.

Before we go further let me make something clear. IELTS tasks will ask in an advantage disadvantage essay something like:

  • Do the advantage s outweigh the disadvantage s ?
  • What are the advantage s and disadvantage s of this?

Notice the plural form here, advantage s and disadvantage s. Many students (and IELTS teachers) think they have to write more than one advantage and disadvantage. Yes, you can certainly do this but you can also make it much simpler by writing about one advantage and one disadvantage. I have heard from examiners that this is ok as long as you are able to support and fully exaplin your ideas. With this approach you can still write over 250 words.

The problem is that you will run out of time if you write 2 of each. You will have only 40 minutes for the essay. Planning time is around 10 minutes so that means 30 minutes of writing. Another danger of writing about 2 of each is that the word count will go well over 300 words and you could include irrelevant information.

One of the consequences of improved medical care is that people are living longer and life expectancy is increasing. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Make sure you analyse the question well and then paraphrase it in the introduction. This kind of question asks about the advantages and disadvantages and an important word here is “ outweigh “. The question asks if the advantages are stronger than the disadvantages so you need to give your opinion here.

Some students just write about the advantages only but this is a wrong approach and you could lose marks. The essay needs to have balance. The first body paragraph could be about the advantages and the second body paragraph can be about the downsides with your opinion throughout the whole essay.

A lot of students fail to give their opinion in this type of essay, or maybe they just give their opinion briefly in the conclusion. Your position must be clear throughout the essay.

Let’s Review

1. analyse the question well then paraphrase it. write your opinion in the thesis statement. 2. make sure you state your opinion in the introduction, main body and also the conclusion. 3. give specific examples throughout the essay but be careful of giving too much information. keep it simple and do not overly complicate it. 4. make sure the essay is balanced and you are not just writing about advantages only., here are 2 possible structures for this type of task:.

Note: Structures are just guidelines to help you plan out your essay, there is no special magic structure that can get you a Band 7, there are many ways to structure an essay.

advantages and disadvantages of advertising essay ielts

Some people think that consumption tax on food items is a good way to raise revenue for the government. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this policy

This type of essay does not ask for your opinion, it is more like a discussion essay so you need to write about pros and cons, you can see that the question does not ask : Do you think…? or Do you agree or disagree…? / What is your opinion ? So this is not asking a direct opinion.

First analyse the question and then paraphrase it. The essay needs to be well balanced just like in example 1 with explanations about how it’s an advantage or disadvantage. Don’t just write about advantages, give both sides in the essay. The conclusion is just a summary of the points that you made in the body paragraphs.

1. Analyse the question well then paraphrase it. 2. Give one example of the advantages in main body paragraph 1, after that give one example of the disadvantages in main body paragraph 2. 3. Do not give your personal opinion because the question does not ask for it. 4. Give good examples throughout the essay but be careful of giving too much information. Keep it simple, be careful about giving too many examples too. 5. Make sure the essay is balanced, not just writing about advantages only.

Here is a good structure for this type of task:

advantages and disadvantages of advertising essay ielts

These days with advances in technology more and more people are working from home. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this and give your own opinion

This essay type is quite similar to example 1, here you must give your opinion and discuss the pros and cons, the main difference compared to example 1 is that it does not mention the word outweigh. The main thing to look out for is the words Discuss and Give your own opinion. Just like in example 1 you need to paraphrase the question, give a balanced approach in the main body paragraphs and give your opinion in the introduction and again in the conclusion.

The examiner needs to see your opinion throughout the whole essay.

1. Analyse the question well then paraphrase it. 2. Give an example of the advantages in main body paragraph 1, after that give an example of the disadvantages in main body paragraph 2. 3. Make sure you state your opinion in the introduction, main body and the conclusion. 4. Give specific examples in the essay but be careful of giving too much information. Keep it simple. 5. Make sure the essay is balanced, not just writing about advantages only.

What structure should i use.

Structures are just guidelines to help you plan out your essay, there is no special magic structure that can get you a high score. I recommend 2 body paragraphs for this kind of essay but you can use 3 main body paragraphs if you wish, no more than that.

  • In main body paragraph 1, you can write about the advantages and explain further. Always remember to give an example. If possible write about the outcome of the advantages (prediction statement). Main body 2 is the same, write about the disadvantages with an example.
  • You must give your opinion in the introduction if the question asks for your opinion. You can also use the main body paragraphs to back up your opinion. You should rephrase your view in the conclusion also.

Key point to remember . Do not give too many examples or you may go off track. You can also go with one advantage and one disadvantage as long as it is well supported, relevant and explained. You haven’t got time to go into too much detail or into tangents. Don’t try to impress the examiner with too much information.

Plan your essay well, set aside 10 minutes planning time , think of at least one supporting point for your topic sentence in each main body paragraph.

IELTS Advantages and Disadvantages Essay Lesson

IELTS advantages and disadvantages questions normally give you a statement and ask you to comment on the advantages and disadvantages of that statement.

The problem is that there are 2 different types of advantages and disadvantages essays, each requiring a different approach. If you answer them differently, you risk losing many easy marks.

This lesson will look at each of the three question types and suggest a standard sentence-by-sentence structure for each of them.  There will also be sample answers for each of the three questions to help you compare and understand the two approaches.

In some countries, young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.

Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary schools rather than secondary schools.

Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Question 1 simply asks us to discuss the advantages and disadvantages. It does not ask for our opinion or says which side is better or worse, so we should not include this information in our answer.

This requires a simple structure in which the student will look at the advantages in one paragraph and the disadvantages in the other.

Question 2 is different because we have to say if the advantages are stronger than the disadvantages. Notice I didn’t say ‘if there are more advantages than disadvantages’. The question is not asking you to talk about numbers but comment on the overall weight of the advantages or disadvantages.  For example, there are many advantages to travelling by private jet, but there is one huge disadvantage (the cost) that stops most people from flying that way, and therefore the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

In this example, we will have to decide which side (advantages or disadvantages) is stronger, affecting our structure. If you choose advantages, you will have to say why these are much stronger than the disadvantages and why the disadvantages don’t hold much weight. You would also have to make this clear in your thesis statement.

Question 1 Advantages and Disadvantages Sample Answer

Before college, many young people are advised that a year of working or travelling may be a good option. This essay will suggest that experience gained and money saved are the biggest advantages of this, but delaying careers and reducing motivation to study are the primary disadvantages.

The main advantages of a gap year are learning more about the world and earning money. For students who have just finished secondary school, working or travelling for a year will allow them to learn what life is like outside of the education system. Also, third-level education is very expensive, and many students decide to work for 12 months and save money before they begin their studies. The average student at a UK university requires over £10,000 per annum to survive, and many drop out because they cannot afford to stay.

Despite these advantages, students lose a year that could have been used to advance their future careers, and they often get used to working or travelling and don’t want to return to a life of study. As job markets are very competitive, an extra year of experience can make a massive difference when applying for jobs, and those who took a gap year are at a disadvantage. Moreover, some decide to bypass university altogether and go straight into a job that is beneath their capabilities or may not offer the same prospects their future career might have. For instance, jobs in the service industry are easy to get without a third-level education, and many gap students fill these roles only to be stuck in them for the rest of their lives.

In conclusion, taking a break from studies can be advantageous if it allows people to accumulate savings or learn more about the world. However, they should also be careful that it does not delay the start of their careers and lead to disillusionment with education.

Question 2 Advantages and Disadvantages Sample Answer

Some authorities think that it is more favourable for pupils to begin studying languages at primary school instead of secondary school. This essay will argue that the advantages of this outweigh the drawbacks. The essay will first demonstrate that the earlier someone learns an additional language, the more likely they are to master it and that it brings added cognitive benefits, followed by an analysis of how the primary disadvantage, namely confusion with their native tongue, is not valid.

The main reason to start kids off with foreign languages early is that this increases the likelihood they will achieve fluency in adulthood. That is to say that they will have far more years to perfect their skills, and speaking bilingually will seem perfectly normal. For example, in countries such as Holland and Norway, where English is taught from a very young age, most adults speak it at an advanced level. Learning a second language also helps to improve overall cognitive abilities. In other words, it benefits the overall development of a child’s brain. It is well known that bi-lingual children are significantly more likely to score higher in Mathematics and Science.

Those opposed to this say that it causes the child to become confused between their mother tongue and the other language. However, there is actually no evidence to support this view and children from bilingual families do just as well in both languages. My son was brought up speaking both Vietnamese and English and outperforms most of his classmates in both.

On balance, the fact that early foreign language learning leads to higher fluency and improved brain function clearly outweighs the flawed argument that it impairs the uptake of native languages.

Band 8+: Many people choose to travel abroad to learn a foreign language instead of studying in their hometown. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of people traveling to foreign countries to learn a new language. Consequently, many individuals are choosing not to stay in their home country. While this trend has numerous benefits, I believe the negatives should also be considered.

Travel expenses can lead to several advantages. First and foremost, studying abroad creates excellent opportunities to enhance various skills, such as speaking and listening. It is one of the best ways to achieve fluency. Therefore, learning a foreign language alongside international students can result in the sharing of new experiences and extensive knowledge about overseas cultural heritage. Undoubtedly, interacting with native residents every day makes the learning process more exciting and enjoyable.

However, studying abroad can also present disadvantages that many learners face. First, it may require students to pay more for certain courses or accommodation, even if they have part-time jobs to help address these issues. Second, in most cases, students who live far away from their families experience homesickness, which can lead to feelings of isolation. Additionally, culture shock is a key factor that affects the adjustment to a new environment. In contrast, individuals studying in their hometown do not encounter these challenges and can also achieve a high level of learning with the support of professional teachers.

In conclusion, despite some drawbacks of this trend, such as the challenges of adjusting to a new culture and financial issues, there are also significant advantages. I believe that the benefits of this trend outweigh its drawbacks.

Nuclear Power Essay IELTS Sample Answer

Nuclear power is a very debated topic in every convention and has always been questioned for the bad it does rather than its good. In my opinion, nuclear power needs to be used, and the user should also be controlled and hedged with renewable energy sources as they are the only viable solution. Nuclear plants currently provide 11% of the world’s electricity. With an ever-increasing demand for electricity being seen everywhere and the fossil fuels reducing each day, it is now more important than ever that major decisions should be made. In the upcoming decades, energy consumption will only increase and meet the rising demand; nuclear power plants will be required as they are the best source of traditional energy-producing sources. Although nuclear power plants are required, it is also necessary to gradually push renewable energy sources and promote them to create a sustainable future for future generations. Nuclear power plants’ waste disposal and radioactivity are the concerning factors that have been the hot topic of most debates at conventions and meetings. In addition to that, a single misuse of this tremendous power can result in the disruption of life for all mankind. Striking a balance between the two will be crucial in the coming time as global warming and the energy crisis are on a constant rise. If nothing is done in the near time, countries could get submerged underwater within the coming decades, and the entire world will have to fight for survival.

Writing Task 2

The writing section of the IELTS exam consists of two sections. Writing task 2 is an essay writing task that requires deep thinking and coherence. This task will be our focus for this blog, as the rules and guidelines of the IELTS exam can be confusing for students appearing for the first time. Writing task 2 has the subsequent guidelines:

  • The essay should have a minimum of 250 words. An essay written in less than 250 words will be penalised and negatively marked. There is no penalty for writing a longer essay, but it will cause you to stray off-topic and waste time.
  • 40 minutes is a good enough time to complete this task and will leave you with time to recheck your answer.
  • The essay’s contents should be written with perfect grammar and solely focused on the topic.
  • You can be penalised if you stray off-topic while writing your essay. All the sentences must be related and formed to provide a clear view and information.
  • The content must be well structured to fetch the best results and have proper cohesion between the sentences.
  • The tone of your answer must be academic or semi-formal and should discuss the given topic at length and focus on proper and sophisticated language.
  • Using bullet points and notes is not allowed in the IELTS exam . The real answer must be written together and broken into paragraphs to better examine your writing style and structure.

Structure of Essay in Writing Task 2

The structure of the essay in writing task 2 is the base of your essay, and a clear idea of the structure will make it much easier for you to finish the essay on time. The structure of the essay can be broken down in the following way:

  • First Paragraph
  • Second Paragraph
  • Third Paragraph
  • Fourth Paragraph

The first paragraph of your essay should provide a small introduction to the topic and provide an opinion of yours about what side you are on about the topic. The first paragraph should be minimal and to the point. A clear and concise introduction leaves a good impression on the examiner. The second paragraph should begin with your stance on the topic. The first sentence should provide clarity on your stance. The second sentence should build on that idea and delve deeper into the specifics. The next sentences are suitable for providing an example and developing it in detail. You can make up research studies and quote them in your essay to support your point. At the end of the paragraph, end with a statement that sums up the overall idea of the paragraph and supports the idea you started with. The third paragraph is very similar in structure to the second paragraph. The main objective of this paragraph is to provide either the opposite view of the topic or discuss new ideas that touch on a different perspective of the topic but ultimately support your opinion. The structuring is the same as in the second paragraph, with minute changes. The fourth paragraph is the conclusion of your essay and, just like the introduction, should be minimal. Summing up your essay with a statement supporting your opinion and overall idea is best advised.

Frequently asked questions, 1. what are the pros and cons of nuclear power.

Ans: Nuclear energy is a widely used method of production of electricity. The benefits of nuclear technology and the main advantages of nuclear power are: a. No production of harmful gases that cause air pollution b. Clean source of energy c. Low cost of fuel d. Long-life once constructed e. A massive amount of energy produced f. Unlike most energy production methods, nuclear energy does not contribute to the increase in global warming

Disadvantages: a. Very high cost of construction of the facility. b. Waste produced is very toxic and requires proper and safe disposal, which is costly. c. If any accident happens, it can have a major impact on everyone and can be devastating. d. Mining of uranium 235, which is nuclear fuel, is very expensive.

2. Does Japan have a plan for dealing with its own nuclear waste problem?

Ans: As per the latest news and research, Japan does not have a proper nuclear waste dumping structure even after the Fukushima disaster in 2011. The Fukushima disaster was caused by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 and caused meltdowns and hydrogen explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactor. It was the worst recorded nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Japan is said to have enough nuclear waste to create nuclear arsenals. In April 2021, Japan declared they would be dumping 1.2 million tonnes of nuclear waste into the sea. This is the same Japan that called the 1993 ocean dumping by Russia “extremely regrettable.” The discharges are bound to begin by 2023, and various legal proceedings and protests have been going on inside Japan against this inhuman decision that would destroy marine life.

3. How many countries have nuclear power plants?

Ans : Currently, 32 countries in the world possess nuclear power plants within their boundaries.

4. Why do people oppose nuclear power?

Ans: Opposition to nuclear power has been a long-standing issue. It is backed by a variety of reasons which are as follows:Nuclear waste is hard to dispose of, and improper disposal affects the radioactivity levels and can disrupt the normal life of people as well as animals. Nuclear technology is another concern of people as the usage of nuclear power plants leads to deeper research into the nuclear field. In today’s world, anything can be weaponised, and the threat of nuclear weapons is one of the drawbacks of nuclear power. This brings the threat of nuclear war and disruption of world peace. Any attack on nuclear power plants by terrorist organisations can result in a massive explosion that can disrupt and destroy human life and increase radioactivity to alarming levels around the site of the explosion.

5. What is the best way to dispose of nuclear waste?

Ans: Nuclear waste needs to be disposed of properly to prevent radioactive issues in the environment. The best methods to dispose of nuclear waste are as follows: a. Incineration : Radioactive waste can be incinerated in large scale incinerators with low production of waste. b. Deep burial: Nuclear waste can be buried deep into the ground as the radioactivity of nuclear waste wears off over time. This method is used for waste that is highly radioactive and will take a longer time to lose its radioactivity. c. Storage: Nuclear waste with low radioactivity is stored by some countries in storage. This is because their radioactive decay takes lesser time and can be disposed of safely once the radiation wears off.

6. Is it possible to produce electricity without using fossil fuels?

Ans: At the moment, 11% of the world’s electricity is produced by nuclear power plants alone. Replacing fossil fuel-based energy with renewable needs to be done gradually and properly. Renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, and wind will have to be promoted and pushed to create a sustainable future. Renewable energy sources provide cheap energy, do not use up natural resources and fossil fuels and are much cheaper to construct than a nuclear power station.
