šŸ¬ Halloween Essay: 100 Words Example

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because it gives me many opportunities to be creative and have fun with my family and friends. I love decorating my house with fancy carved pumpkins and watching my neighbors do the same.

Halloween is a holiday with mysterious roots that originate in ancient Celtic culture, but I donā€™t find it scary at all! The modern holiday is mostly about having fun in the costumes of childrenā€™s beloved heroes and walking in the neighborhood to collect treats and have a good time together.

I always look forward to the next Halloween as a warm autumn festivity that unifies people in our community and gives them moments of fun, fear, and fellowship.

šŸ§™ Halloween Essay: 500 Words Example

If you need a more extended Halloween essay, 500 words may be an optimal word count to cover your topic. Here is an example of what such an academic paper may look like:

The holiday of Halloween is one of the American children’s favorite autumn festivities, filled with fun preparation and celebration. Every US household has spooky orange-and-black decorations, carved pumpkins, and scary costumes arranged for children and adults. They put these costumes on to wander the neighborhood and seek treats. Though the festivity includes creepy references to supernatural forces, ghosts, witches, and demons, all these features are commercialized and sanitized in the modern American context of Halloween celebrations. Yet, the holiday has mysterious, pagan roots dating back over 2,000 years, which every Halloween lover would be interested to know about.

Initially, this holiday was celebrated by ancient Celts , who lived in the modern territory of the UK, Ireland, and northern France two millennia ago. They had a pagan festival called Samhain, which literally means “summer’s end.” That festivity was initiated to mark the end of summer and nature’s transition to autumn. Among its traditions was a ceremony honoring the dead with crop and animal sacrifices. Therefore, one can easily trace the holiday to the bloody sacrifice rituals that the Celts conducted on that day to soften the attitude of spirits and protect the people from ghosts and evil.

The next historical epoch of Halloween celebration started in the early 7th century AD when the Romans, who conquered the Celts and settled in their territories, invented a new celebration for honoring the saints and martyrs . The Romans called that holiday All Saints’ Day or All Hallows’ Day and presented it as a Christian alternative to the pagan fest of Samhain. The eve before All Saints’ Day was called All Hallows’ Evening. These holidays were meant to substitute the traditional Celtic holiday. They included the same festive elements as Samhain involved, like bonfires, dressing up in the costumes of devils and angels, and other decorations. However, they were now named in compliance with the emerging Christian tradition. The holiday took its current form only in the 19th century.

Initially of Irish origin and celebrated in various European states, Halloween traveled to the United States with European immigrants. Early European settlers mixed with Native Americans inhabiting the continent and created a unique blend of festive Halloween attributes for the US. Halloween’s present-day celebration still retains many original elements, such as celebrating harvest yields, telling ghost stories near the fire, dancing and singing in the streets, and dressing up in the costumes of supernatural creatures.

The holiday has undergone a secular transformation on the verge of the 19th and 20th centuries . More Americans began spending this holiday in a family circle with little concern about ghosts, demons, and witches. By the middle of the 20th century, Halloween became a children’s holiday. Therefore, the current Halloween tradition practiced by all cities and towns of the US every year is far from the original fest held by the Celts and medieval Europeans . It has lost most of its religious and supernatural flair and has become a fun celebration that gives every child a chance to have a good time and get sweets from the neighbors.
