Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

Dr. Wood

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) represents the highest level of formal education for a career in nursing research and the scholarship of discovery. It prepares scholars for expression and communication of the knowledge base in the profession of nursing. PhD graduates develop the scientific foundation, steward the profession, define its uniqueness, maintain its professional integrity and educate the next generation of nurses. The PhD in Nursing program at Stony Brook University (SBU) School of Nursing (SON) will have a strong scientific emphasis within the discipline of nursing and an understanding of the science of related disciplines and translation science. The program is designed in a broad, cross-functional perspective to prepare nurse scientists to collaborate across disciplines to solve complex problems and address multiple issues facing individuals, families, communities and populations. Translational and innovative research, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration at the highest level, will be foundational to the program. The PhD program in nursing will attract candidates oriented towards developing new nursing knowledge who will select an area of research congruent with interdisciplinary faculty expertise in basic and clinical sciences. A key strength to this program is the School of Nursing’s research partnerships with the five health professions schools of Stony Brook Medicine as well as partnerships with biomedical engineering and computational science, biomedical informatics, and basic sciences. Key areas of nursing science in which potential PhD students may focus include, but are not limited to; symptom science, health promotion and illness prevention, and self-management.

To foster success and promote transformational, far-reaching opportunities, students will engage in a diversified curriculum. The 54-credit curriculum is designed for Master’s-prepared nurses who aspire to research and academic roles within health care and educational settings. It will build on the foundation of research and scholarship gained at the master’s level. The full-time, cohort-based program, to be offered on-site (one day/week) with web- enhanced technologies, contains three phases: Coursework, Proposal Development and Dissertation. Coursework and proposal development will take two and one-half years to complete with an additional minimum of one year for dissertation completion. The PhD candidate will select an area of research congruent with interdisciplinary faculty expertise. The SBU intensive research environment provides opportunities for mentorship by faculty within and outside the SON. Our Office of Nursing Research assists faculty and doctoral students in meeting research goals by providing administrative support, grant preparation support and management, statistical consultation, and dissemination of research findings through poster/podium presentation and manuscript preparation.

Why Become a Nurse in New York?

Choosing a nursing career in New York offers rewarding opportunities, job security, and the chance to make a significant impact on public health. Here's why New York is a compelling choice for aspiring nurses:

  • High Demand for Nurses: New York offers an excellent opportunity for nurses seeking job security and career advancement due to its ongoing nursing shortage. With a growing demand for healthcare professionals, particularly in hospitals and underserved areas, nurses are in high demand. Recent data from the Center for Health Workforce Solutions shows that over 50% of patient care nurses work in hospitals, where younger nurses are essential to maintaining care standards. The state is taking steps to address high turnover and burnout, making it an ideal environment for nurses looking to make an impact and secure a stable, rewarding career.
  • Improved Working Conditions:  New York is addressing its nurse retention challenges by implementing initiatives to reduce burnout and enhance support. Programs that focus on leadership development, mentorship, and preceptor training aim to improve nurse satisfaction and reduce turnover. Efforts to promote work-life balance through flexible scheduling and career advancement opportunities further contribute to making nursing a more sustainable and fulfilling profession across the state.
  • Public Health and Community Impact: New York faces critical healthcare shortages in areas designated as He alth Professional Shortage Area s (HPSAs). These underserved regions often lack access to primary care, mental health, and dental services, resulting in poorer health outcomes. Nurses are key to filling these gaps by delivering essential care and addressing chronic health conditions. Nursing professionals in New York have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by improving healthcare equity across these underserved communities.
  • Diverse Clinical Settings : New York offers nurses diverse clinical settings suited to varied career goals. In NYC, dynamic, specialized environments at top hospitals like NewYork-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai allow nurses to manage complex cases in trauma and oncology. Upstate, smaller facilities focus on community-centered care, addressing the needs of underserved populations.
  • Career Advancement Opportunities:  New York provides robust career advancement opportunities for nurses with graduate programs at prestigious institutions such as Columbia University School of Nursing and NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing . These programs equip nurses for higher-level positions such as Nurse Practitioners (NP), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), and Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA).
  • Financial Advantage:  Nursing salaries in New York are above the national average, helping to offset the state's higher cost of living, particularly in urban areas like NYC. For nurses who prefer to work in rural settings, programs like the Nurses Across New York Loan Repayment Program offer financial support to those working in underserved communities. This not only helps compensate for the lower salaries in non-urban areas but also strengthens support for underserved populations. With competitive wages and targeted financial incentives, New York presents a strong option for nurses seeking a financially stable career while contributing to healthcare improvements across the state.

With its high demand for healthcare professionals, varied clinical settings, and robust educational pathways, New York is an excellent state for those looking to start or advance their nursing careers.

Steps to Become a Nurse in New York

Becoming a nurse in New York involves several key steps, each designed to ensure that you are well-prepared to provide high-quality care to patients. Whether you aim to become a Registered Nurse (RN) or advance your career as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), following the right educational and licensure pathways is crucial.

RN Requirements in New York

  • Complete an Accredited Nursing Program: Earn an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing school.
  • Pass the NCLEX-RN Exam: After completing your nursing degree, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to obtain licensure.
  • Apply for RN Licensure: STo submit an application for RN licensure to the New York State Board of Nursing (BON), you will need to provide your academic transcripts, proof of passing the NCLEX-RN exam, and complete a background check. Additionally, New York State mandates that nurses complete an approved infection control course as well as a child abuse reporting education requirement. For specific details, guidelines, and application procedures, visit the New York State Education Department (NYSED) website  to ensure compliance with all licensure requirements.
  • Obtain a Nursing License: Once your application is approved, you will be issued an RN license, allowing you to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York.
  • Pursue Continuing Education:  In New York, RNs must complete the NSYED approved infection control continuing education (CE) if they do not qualify for an exemption.

APRN Requirements in New York

  • Obtain and Maintain an RN License: Before pursuing APRN certification, you must be a licensed RN in New York.
  • Earn a Graduate Degree: Complete a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program with a specialization in an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) role — e.g., Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse Midwife.
  • Gain Clinical Experience:  APRN programs require specific clinical hours based on your specialty and degree. All graduate-level nursing programs mandate a minimum of 500 clinical hours post-graduate. The National Task Force Standards for NP Education requires at least 750 hands-on clinical hours for NP graduates, while DNP programs require a minimum of 1,000 hours. These hands-on experiences are crucial for developing advanced nursing skills.
  • American Midwifery Certification Board  (AMCB)
  • National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists  (NACNS)
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
  • American Association of Nurse Practitioners  American Nurses (AANP)
  • National Board of Certification CRNA (NBCRNA)
  • Apply for APRN Licensure: Submit an application for APRN licensure to the New York Board of Nursing. This may require documentation of your active RN license, advanced nursing degree, APRN certification exam results, and clinical experience. APRN license requirements vary by state, as each state has its own scope of practice regulations for APRNs. Be sure to check your New York's specific guidelines to understand the requirements and scope of practice.
  • Maintain Certification and Licensure:  APRNs in New York must maintain both their national certification and state licensure. National certification must be upheld according to the specific requirements of the certifying body for the APRN specialty. For state licensure renewal , APRNs are required to maintain their RN license and CEs as well as an additional three hours of pharmacology CEs to maintain prescriptive authority.

Always verify nursing license requirementswith the state board of nursing, as application requirements may change or include additional steps.

How to Choose a Nursing Program in New York

Selecting the right nursing program depends on various personal preferences. Some students emphasize tuition costs, while others prioritize pass rates, academic reputation, or other considerations. Although it will vary by individual, a  survey by allnurses  revealed the top 11 reasons nursing students chose their programs:

  • High NCLEX-RN Pass Rates
  • Academic Reputation
  • Availability of Financial Aid and Scholarships
  • Length of Time to Obtain Degree
  • Flexibility of Schedule
  • Campus and Surroundings
  •  Nursing Clinicals Location
  •  Availability of Online Course

For prospective doctorate and master's degree nursing students, additional considerations include:

  • Specialization: Ensure the program offers the right focus for your chosen specialty concentration.
  • Certification and Licensure: Meets APRN certification and state licensure requirements.
  • Certification Pass Rates: Check program national certification success rates.
  • Clinical Training: Diverse, high-quality clinical placements and/or clinical placement support.
  • Faculty Expertise: Qualified and experienced faculty.
  • Support Services: Mentoring, career services, and academic support.
  • Technology and Resources: Access to advanced technology and resources.
  • Alumni Network: Strong network for job placement and growth.
  • Interprofessional Education: Collaborative learning with other healthcare professionals.
  • State Regulations: Ensure your program is approved by the state Board of Nursing in the state where you want to work.

Choosing the right program should be based on your personal preferences and learning style. If you prefer a more flexible schedule and a longer duration for coursework and clinical practice, consider a traditional nursing program. Conversely, if you are eager to complete your education quickly and thrive in an intensive, fast-paced learning environment, an accelerated nursing program might be the better choice.

Importance of Picking an Accredited Nursing School in  New York

Choosing to attend an accredited nursing school in New York is important for several reasons:

  • Assurance of Educational Quality: Accredited nursing schools undergo rigorous evaluations to ensure their curriculum, faculty, and clinical training meet high standards. This guarantees that students receive a comprehensive and up-to-date education, equipping them with the skills needed for successful nursing careers.
  • Licensing Requirements: Graduation from an accredited program is often necessary to meet state licensure requirements. Without attending an accredited school, students may find it challenging or even impossible to obtain the necessary credentials to practice as a registered nurse.
  • Enhanced Career Opportunities: Employers prioritize hiring graduates from accredited nursing programs because these programs are recognized for maintaining high educational standards. This preference can lead to better job prospects and career advancement opportunities in the nursing field.
  • Ease of Credit Transfer: Credits earned at an accredited nursing school are more likely to be recognized and accepted by other institutions. This is particularly important for students who may wish to transfer schools or pursue further education, such as a Master's or Doctoral degree in nursing.
  • Professional Credibility: Completing a program at an accredited nursing school adds to a nurse's professional credibility. It demonstrates that their education aligns with national standards, which is essential for advancing in the nursing profession.
  • Eligibility for Financial Aid: Accreditation is often a prerequisite for accessing federal financial aid, including grants and loans. Attending an accredited school ensures that students can receive the financial support they need to complete their education.

Given these points, it's important prospective students research whether their choice of nursing school is accredited by a recognized body such as the  Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) ,  Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) , or the NLN Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).

Frequently Asked Questions About Nursing in New York

Q: Is it possible to enroll in a BSN program in New York without patient care experience?

Patient care experience is not always required for direct-entry BSN programs, but it can enhance your application. Some undergraduate nursing programs, particularly RN to BSN and accelerated and second-degree BSN (ABSN) tracks, may prioritize applicants with healthcare experience.

For master's programs and other graduate-level programs in nursing, patient care experience is a standard prerequisite.

Q: Can out-of-state students enroll in New York nursing programs?

Yes, out-of-state students can enroll in New York nursing programs, though they may encounter higher tuition rates compared to in-state residents. New York's residency requirements for in-state tuition generally involve living in the state for at least 12 months prior to enrollment.

It is important for prospective students to verify licensure eligibility in the state where they plan to work after graduation, as not all nursing programs automatically qualify graduates for RN or APRN licensure in certain states. This information can typically be confirmed on both the school's website and the state Board of Nursing.

Q: Are there online options for completing a bachelor's degree or master's degree in New York?

Many online nursing programs in New York cater to non-entry-level students, such as the following online nursing program options:

  • RN to BSN No Clinical
  • RN to MSN
  • Nurse Practitioner

These online programs are designed for nurses with clinical experience and often allow students to complete their clinical requirements near their homes. By offering a blend of online coursework and flexible clinical placements, these programs make it easier for working nurses to advance their education without needing to attend full-time, on-campus classes.

Q: How much does it cost to attend a nursing program in New York?

Nursing program tuition in New York varies widely by program and institution. Advanced Graduate Certificate programs may cost under $10,000, while more comprehensive programs like BSN-to-DNP Nurse Practitioner can approach $200,000. To estimate the cost of your chosen program, refer to the data provided above. The wide variation in nursing school tuition makes  financial planning essential when evaluating which nursing school is best for you.

Kelly Foltz-Ramos

BUFFALO, N.Y. – University at Buffalo nursing instruction-simulation expert Kelly Foltz-Ramos was selected for the inaugural class of the State University of New York (SUNY) Nursing Simulation Fellowship.

This opportunity offers a platform to expand the impact of her work across the SUNY system.

Foltz-Ramos, PhD, assistant professor and director of simulation and innovation in the School of Nursing, was also chosen as one of two co-conveners to lead the development of the SUNY Simulation Shared Resource Library, a repository of vetted simulation scenarios, teaching strategies and troubleshooting guides, available SUNY-wide to simulation professionals.

The fellowship, which includes 10 other SUNY simulation experts, empowers UB and other SUNY institutions to further enhance simulation skills and collaborate with other campus fellows. The group aims to set the stage for the future of simulation-based learning across SUNY nursing programs.

“I am honored to help lead the development of a shared resource that will elevate simulation-based learning across SUNY,” says Foltz-Ramos. “This library will empower faculty with new tools and expand the scope of simulation for students, ultimately preparing them to meet the demands of an evolving health care environment.”

Foltz-Ramos described the fellowship as “an incredible opportunity” to advance simulation education and build a shared library “that truly supports our faculty and enriches student learning across SUNY. By collaborating on high-quality resources, we are not only enhancing our programs but also shaping the future of nursing education for all SUNY students.”

SUNY calls its Nursing Simulation Fellowship Program a “key initiative” aimed at further advancing SUNY nursing licensure programs system-wide in adopting simulation-based education. The program aims to elevate members of SUNY to the forefront of understanding and experience within the field.

SUNY hopes this initiative will ultimately foster effective partnerships of simulation spaces across the system.

Contact the Office of Admissions

For any questions regarding the DNP Program, please contact NYU Meyer's Office of Admissions at [email protected] or 212-998-5317.

There are currently three entry points for the DNP Program:

Post-BS to DNP

Post-Baccalaureate (BS) to DNP option for those who are registered nurses with a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

(Population foci: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP, Family NP, Psychiatric-Mental Health NP, Pediatric NP)

Students entering the  Post-BS DNP program for a population foci begin the program by taking a combination of graduate-level advanced practice nursing (APN) courses as well as DNP core courses. Once students begin their advanced leadership component courses they begin a clinical placement to complete the DNP Scholarly Project. Students can complete an individual or team project at the placement site supported by a project team comprised of a faculty mentor, faculty reviewer, and a clinical mentor from the practice setting.

Students are guided by the project team in developing the competencies necessary to assess research and evaluate the impact of the research on practice in order to implement evidence-based practice changes to improve the quality and safety of healthcare. The DNP curriculum capitalizes on the research and clinical expertise of NYU Meyers faculty in gerontology, chronic disease prevention and management, workforce strategy and capacity, infectious disease/global public health, translational research, and quality improvement.

Graduate-level core and specialty courses for the Post-BS to DNP are held on campus and predominantly offered in the evening. Clinical hours for NP or nurse-midwifery specialty courses are arranged by faculty assignment with a preceptor. The advanced leadership component of the program is offered in an executive hybrid format which includes on-site half-day classes on four Fridays during the semester in addition to online coursework.

Advanced Standing DNP

Advanced Standing option for those who have earned a master’s degree and are nurse practitioners (NPs) or certified nurse-midwives (CNMs).

The Advanced Standing option is designed for nurse practitioners (NPs) or certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) who are expert clinicians and leaders in their communities. The Advanced Standing DNP curriculum offers courses that aim to develop skillsets for clinical leadership. NYU Meyers requires a minimum of 36 credits and 400 clinical hours devoted to the DNP Project for completion of the advanced standing DNP degree.

Advanced Certificate to DNP

Post-master’s option for those nurses who have a master’s degree but are not NPs or CNMs and would like to become a direct care advanced practice nurse. These individuals can apply for a post-master's advanced certificate program in order to become an NP or CNM and obtain the DNP degree .

The Post-Master’s option is for master’s prepared nurses who are not NPs or CNMs, i.e., clinical nurse specialists, and nurse administrators, educators, or informatics specialists. It requires that the student obtain a post-master’s certificate in one of the NP population foci or in nurse-midwifery in addition to completing the advanced leadership courses and the DNP Project in a clinical agency. Students’ previous graduate coursework will be reviewed on an individual basis to determine the number of credits that would be transferable into the DNP program. In order to be conferred the DNP degree, 1000 clinical hours are required, spread across the master's and DNP-level coursework.

Nurse Clinician and Educator Named to New SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship

Nursingsimlab23

STONY BROOK, NY, November 7, 2024 –  Debra Giugliano , RN, PhD, a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, was selected by the State University of New York (SUNY) to be a member of the inaugural class of the SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship, an initiative for the 2024-25 academic year that will further advance all SUNY nursing programs to adopt simulation-based education for students.

Deb g

Announced by the SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr., the Fellowship is also part of a larger effort to prepare more nurses for New York State’s health care workforce – a major objective of Governor Kathy Hochul and SUNY. It was developed based on recommendations from the  SUNY Future of Health Care Workforce Task Force , a group organized to guide SUNY in addressing the critical health care workforce shortage and Governor’s goal of increasing this workforce in NYS by 20 percent. Nursing simulation is one of four priority areas identified by the Task Force.

The 11 Fellows of the inaugural class will advance their knowledge and skills in simulation training by completing a six-month continuing education and simulation training program, attending monthly virtual meetings and in-person retreats on the topic led by SUNY, and attend the International Meeting on Simulation Healthcare from January 10-14 in Orlando, Fla.

As of May 2023, SUNY nursing students can complete as much as one-third of their clinical training through simulation education.

“We are excited for the School of Nursing and for Dr. Giugliano with her selection for this inaugural Nursing Simulation Fellowship,” says Pat Bruckenthal, RN, PhD, Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing. “This opportunity will enable Dr. Giugliano to bring our student learning experiences to the forefront of innovation and impact the preparation of our next generation of nurse leaders.”

A long-time clinician and educator in the School of Nursing, Giugliano is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner and pediatric oncology nurse. Her clinical specialties include caring for children with cancer and blood disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The recipient of numerous awards in nursing clinical care and training, Giugliano is also the Founder and Director of the internationally recognized School Intervention and Reentry Program at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

Nursingsimlab23

“I am honored to have been chosen for this Fellowship and look forward to gaining the necessary expertise to elevate nursing simulation and create a nursing simulation network within SUNY,” says Giugliano.

She and other fellows will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of simulation-based learning across the SUNY system. Through their expertise, they will contribute to the development of the SUNY Simulation Shared Resource Library, a central repository of nursing simulation resources that will benefit nursing education programs system-wide.
