Abstract:  Researcher and mathematics educator Deborah Loewenberg Ball has spent over 30 years researching effective practices for teaching mathematics. Her research is an expansion of research done by educational psychologist Lee S. Shulman (1896) on teacher knowledge.

Deborah Ball’s cumulative research efforts resulted in what she calls Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching. Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching “encompasses abilities such as analyzing the student thinking that led to an incorrect answer, identifying the mathematical understanding a student does not yet have, and deciding how to best represent a mathematical idea so that it can be understood by students” (Chapman, 2017). In other words, Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching acknowledges that math teachers need to be dually equipped with subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge for the most effective delivery of content (Ball, Thames & Phelps, 2008, p. 391). Ball classified both, subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, into 3 distinct subdomains, respectively. This capstone paper will thoroughly define each of those subdomains. After defining each subdomain I will take a math lesson that I have taught and analyze it through the lenses of the Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching framework.

Abstract:  Let V = {p_1, · · · , p_k} be a finite set of points in P^2. Then, it is a general fact that there is a finite set S of polynomials with the following properties: every point in V lies on an intersection of all of the curves and all of the curves’ intersection points are in V. There exist many such sets fulfilling those conditions, but this paper is particularly interested in finding the one with the least amount of elements, given a set V with five points all on a line or else. The main result is that, if the five points lie on the same line, only two polynomials are needed to form an intersection of just those points. Further, when the points are not all on a line, it can be constructively shown that only three polynomials are needed to form the intersection, provided the points lie in a plane over an infinite field.

Abstract:  In the spring of 2020, I studied measure theory under professor Mark Elmer’s advisement. I read and did problems from ”A User-friendly Introduction to Lebesgue Measure and Integration” by Gail S. Nelson. We reviewed Riemann integration, then studied outer measure, Lebesgue measure, measurable functions, and finally Lebesgue integration.

This paper will review the concept of Lebesgue measure and Lebesgue integration as presented by Nelson, followed by my proposing a different way of setting up Lebesgue integration while simultaneously being equivalent.

Abstract:  Separating systems and covers deal with both graph theory and combinatorics. Taking an n-element vertex set V, we will present what is means for a pair A and B of subsets of V to separate two given vertices, and extend that definition to a family of such pairs, separating any two vertices of V, creating what we call a separating system. We will consider two optimization problems related to separating systems, first trying to minimize the number of pairs of subsets in our separating system, and then examining a weighted version, minimizing the total number of vertices in the separating system. We will then show a technique that can be used to build an optimal separating system with regards to both problems. Finally, we will extend these concepts to hypergraphs and covers, and discuss a connection between the problems of finding an optimal cover and finding a family of perfect hash functions.

Abstract:  From a simplicial complex ∆ we can build a chain complex C(∆) which gives an algebraic encoding of information about ∆. We will recognize a fundamental connection between simplicial complexes and commutative algebra through C(∆), which enables us to understand a result of Bayer, Peeva, and Sturmfels that gives an effective way to describe some resolutions in terms of labeled simplicial complexes.

Abstract:  The simple pendulum is one of the most studied cases of non-linear motion. At small angles its motion appears linear, however, is non-linear at large angles. This caused by the simple pendulum’s differential equation having a non-linear term (sine of the angle). This term can be approximated using the small angle approximation which linearizes the differential equation resulting in a linear solution. This solution is accurate at describing a simple pendulum’s motion at small angles but fails at large angles, which is described by Jacobian elliptic functions. Approximate solutions for the motion of a pendulum have been developed to describe a simple pendulum’s motion at large angles. Three such approximations are were developed in Bel ́endez, A. et al., Borghi R. et al., and Johannessen, K. et al using an ansatz, Fourier series and homotropy perturbation method respectively. These methods may be used to describe the motion of a pendulum at large angles and converge for smaller angles with the exact and small angle approximation solutions.

Abstract:  In my final semester here at SUNY Oswego, I worked with Dr. Gregory Churchill contemplating what I will call the triple-double problem, an exercise in empirical as well as theoretical probability. That is, what is the probability that an NBA player will acheive double-digit averages in points, rebounds, and assists over the course of an NBA season. With our findings I develop an argument for why Oscar Robinson is the most underrated player in NBA history.

Abstract:  A scenario in which an unbiased coin is tossed until two consecutive heads are achieved results in a probability distribution containing Fibonacci numbers in its numerator. The probability for a sequence of n spaces and with specific place holders, called strings, of heads and tails patterns will be derived. Also, formulas to explicitly and mathematically provide reasoning for the appearance of the Fibonacci numbers will be investigated, even extending the scenario to three consecutive heads to look for patterns. Exploring the expected value, variance, skewness, kurtosis, and moment generating functions for both the two consecutive heads scenario and the three consecutive heads scenario will give insight on the distributions’ characteristics.

We find that this situation applies to four and five heads and then extends to n consecutive head scenarios as well. We will use an R program to confirm the statistical properties derived from each coin tossing scenario and also provide a basis to look at how further “n-acci” sequences compare to our two and three consecutive head scenarios.

Abstract:  This semester I worked with Dr. Zheng Hao studying the obstacle problem. Throughout the semester I studied a numeric method to solve this problem and explored a solution to the obstacle problem using the Primal-Dual Method and MATLAB code to run this algorithm. I then compared the work Junwei Lu did on approximating the 2D obstacle problem with the Finite Difference Method, under the advisement of Dr. Hao, with my work on the 2D obstacle problem.

Faculty Sponsor: Elizabeth Wilcox Abstract:  A cubic spline is a piecewise smooth cubic polynomial that interpolates a set of ordered data points. Cubic spline interpolation is often chosen over polynomial interpolation because of better behavior controls and often less computational overhead. While cubic spline interpolation is often viewed as a way to interpolate data points, it can also be used to model the curve of natural or man-made objects. This was the premise of Roel J. Stroeker’s paper “On the Shape of a Violin,” in which Stroker derived a cubic spline to describe the shape of a violin, which could then be made.[3] Likewise, other interpolation methods such as thin plate spline interpolation appear to be useful modeling tools for real life objects, as seen in fields such as morphometrics. The purpose of this project though was to learn about cubic spline interpolation, and write a program that could model real world inputs, and produce graphics to potentially fabricate a model.

For this, we split a ring into an infinite sequence of vector spaces, which yields an infinite sequence of dimensions. We then use the growth of this sequence as the dimension of the ring. We quantify this growth using objects called Hilbert series, and our main tool to compute Hilbert series is an advanced form of linear algebra.

The first woman elected president of the National Academy of Sciences, Robinson’s career in mathematics spanned over thirty years. Her love for both number theory and recursion as a young college student led her to study Hilbert’s tenth problem, commencing her life’s work. It is her conjecture, namely the J.R. Hypothesis, that ultimately led to the groundbreaking solution to Hilbert’s tenth problem, proving her invaluable to the math community. In this paper, I will discuss not only her personal life, but I will also expound upon her famous hypothesis, discussing the key terms and theorems in her work.

Abstract:  This paper is description of the Obstacle problem. The obstacle problem is one of the main motivations for the development of the theory of variational inequalities and the problematic of free boundary problems.

Abstract:  This project aims to study the probability distributions that are involved in analyzing collision related data. The monthly data collected over a period of three years by a local body shop was used in this study. The data showed that the amount of collisions related damages is normally distributed while the number of parts needed to repair these vehicles (which is nested within the number of damaged vehicles) is Poisson distributed. Goodness-of-fit tests were performed to confirm the distributional patterns.

Abstract:  The directional data is very common in meteorology, spatial modeling, geology, dentistry etc. For example, wind speed and wind direction form a bivariate directional data. The project considered the descriptive and inferential aspects of bivariate directional data.

Abstract:  This research encompasses the use of many statistical software programs to fit four different copula models on data that measures the Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation. We first discuss basic copula theory and its applications. Next, we talk about the techniques of data classification used and the results from this procedure. We then move on to fitting copula models and how to do so. We conclude with a discussion of how we analyzed and proved a suspected break in data at the point of X=1.

Existing Research . For any new piece of scholarship, it’s crucial to thoroughly understand and acknowledge the current knowledge and findings that exist around your thesis. As an advancing practitioner in your field of study or profession, you should already have a sense of what other scholars and experts have said about your capstone project idea, but this is a moment to fully explore: Who are the major players in this professional or scholarly conversation? What are the most important pieces of research that ground this field of study? What recent innovations have been made in this topic?

Stakes . If you’ve ever been involved in a debate or had to write a persuasive speech , you know that an important question to answer is: “So what?” Why is this capstone project idea important? What will be affected if the ideas in your capstone do or do not come to pass? What exactly is at stake here?

Examples Continued

Stakeholders . The stakeholders of a capstone are those who will be affected by the information in your project. Perhaps you’ve already engaged in community service and have seen a gap that can be filled by your particular area of expertise. Maybe you are one of the stakeholders in your research. In every capstone project, your readers should know who will be most important to your work.

Identify a gap or problem . If you’ve done your research properly, then you now know what current holes or gaps exist in your field. Make sure you frame your capstone so that your audience is aware of the work that needs to be done.

Fill the gap . This is your moment to shine! What is your specific hypothesis? What kind of research will you conduct to prove it? Specifically, how is your work contributing to this field of study? To this profession?

Feasibility and Scope . The last question you need to ask yourself is: Can I actually do this project? Do you have the time and resources to complete the work you’re proposing? Is your capstone actually doable? If you find that your project seems too big, don’t despair! Many capstone project ideas can be narrowed down for specificity and feasibility. Take a look at the example below:

More specific and feasible:

“What are the most current findings on early diagnostic testing and maternal health outcomes amongst American women?”

Each student in the secondary teaching concentration will complete a capstone project (MAT 5520). The preliminary work involved in selecting a topic, learning about human subject research, and building a literature review should be completed during enrollment in Investigations in Teaching Mathematics (MAT 5910). The project must be carried out in a high school mathematics classroom, with the active participation of a practicing teacher if the student is not currently teaching.

Paperwork : Directed Research/Capstone Project Application - A qualtrix form (request the link from the program director) should be filled out after you identify your research mentor; once the form is approved by your mentor, you will need to complete the  Special Course form  to request registration from the graduate school.

Goals and Guiding Principles

The Capstone Project (the focus of MAT 5420 Capstone Project in Secondary Education) is designed to be a culminating experience for students in the MA in Mathematics, Secondary Teaching concentration, integrating the knowledge and expertise gained over the course of the program with their work in the classroom. The project is typically completed near the end of the program, after successful completion of MAT 5910 Investigations in Teaching Mathematics. The teacher will apply their knowledge of mathematics, of teaching, and of mathematics education research to the systematic investigation of their classroom practice. 

Goal: Candidates demonstrate and apply knowledge of research-based practices in a project that impacts high school mathematics teaching and learning.

During completion of MAT 5420, students will build upon their efforts in MAT 5910 to:

develop familiarity with research on mathematics teaching and learning along with techniques for finding, understanding, critically analyzing, and applying that research;

develop techniques for sustainably assessing, understanding, and improving one’s own practice in teaching mathematics.

The specific Student Learning Outcomes to be assessed are as follows:

SLO 1: Candidates design and implement a project exemplifying one or more of the following CAEP Standard A.1 focus areas, with direct involvement of high school mathematics students, teachers and/or administrators.

  • Use of research and implementation of appropriate research methodologies to examine an issue that arises in the mathematics classroom;
  • Employment of data analysis and evidence to develop supportive mathematics classrooms;
  • Development of professional activities designed to impact the mathematics classroom, and implementation with others such as peers, colleagues, teachers, administrators, community organizations, or parents;
  • Supporting appropriate applications of digital media and/or technology in the mathematics classroom.

 SLO 2: Candidates explain their approach to and appraise the results of their project through the lens of research related to their project.  

SLO3: Candidates disseminate their results through a professional report and presentation, including a summary of their project plan, research foundation, implementation, results, and conclusions.

These outcomes will be assessed through a research-based investigative project in which the teacher investigates an aspect of his or her mathematics teaching practice. The investigation will be research-based in the sense that it will be informed and inspired by high-quality mathematics research. However, it is not meant to imitate the formal research procedures of a thesis. Rather, emphasis shall be placed on systematically analyzing one’s own practice in a manner that allows the teacher to develop a deeper understanding of teaching and learning, ultimately leading to improved student learning.

Professional Standards Satisfied

The capstone project or thesis will be used as evidence in the student’s Product of Learning. It will demonstrate evidence of North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards, 

Standard 3: “Teachers know the content they teach,” particularly those elements of the standard that indicate knowledge of “content appropriate to their teaching specialty, recognition of “the interconnectedness of content areas/disciplines, and making “instruction relevant to students.” 

Standard 4: “Teachers facilitate learning for their students.” The capstone project or thesis may also serve as evidence in the Product of Learning of other standards, depending on the particular topic and investigation. 

Paper and Oral Presentation

Every capstone project will include both a paper and an oral presentation. Because formats of the project may differ, the specific format of these products may differ somewhat from student to student. However, each should communicate the following:

  • Familiarity with the relevant research that serves as a basis for the project, communicating important results or frameworks and their relationship to the work undertaken in the capstone project. The paper, in particular, should articulate how this research has led to the decisions made in the capstone project.
  • A discussion of the design of the project, justifying methodological choices.
  • A communication of the results and implications, with emphasis on what was learned about student learning and how the project will impact classroom practice.
  • A plan for extending the project for continued growth in teaching practice.

Possible Formats

The capstone project may take a variety of forms, some of which are discussed at the end of this document. However, all projects must:

  • focus on the mathematics classroom and student learning of mathematics
  • include an examination of relevant literature and provide evidence of understanding the research methodologies that influence the design of the project.
  • include both a paper and an oral presentation/defense of the product in an open forum of university faculty, student peer, and/or professional practitioners

The specific capstone project is to be developed in by the student beginning in MAT 5910 and in consultation with the student's capstone advisor. The following are recommended formats, although other formats, based in or originating from high-quality mathematics education research, are possible. Any format should be based on a formal research methodology, of which the student is expected to convey understanding.

Thesis Option

At the student's discretion, and in consultation with the graduate coordinator and capstone advisor, he or she may choose to develop the capstone project into a Master's Thesis. The thesis will satisfy the requirements of the capstone project but should embody high-quality mathematics education research. The goals and aims of the project are similar, but a thesis option student assumes greater responsibility for defining a conceptual basis for their project, identifying epistemological assumptions and their consequences, and for examining and utilizing relevant literature in order to justify and precisely define their methodology. In short, whereas a capstone project is described as informal research, a thesis should follow the principles of formal mathematics education research.

Relevant Standards

Informal Action Research

Action research is often used as a catch-all term for teachers investigating their own practice, but it does have a well-defined theoretical basis in literature. In one of the earliest descriptions of the process, Corey (1954) introduces the term as follows: " Action research in education is research undertaken by practitioners in order that they may improve their practices. The people who actually teach children or supervise teachers or administer school systems attempt to solve their practical problems by using the methods of science" (p. 375). The important defining characteristics of action research then, are the definition of a practical problem related to improving professional teaching practice and the systematic collection of data to address the problem and improve practice (Parsons & Brown, 2002). A student engaged in a capstone project utilizing informal action research should begin by defining an issue they would like to address, then investigate relevant sources in the research literature in order to design a process for collecting and analyzing data – quantitative, qualitative, or both – that will offer insight into the problem at hand.

Curriculum Development and Analysis

In a curriculum development project, the teacher-researcher plans and enacts a curriculum in the classroom, analyzing its impact and effectiveness. Curriculum here is defined according to Clements (2007) definition: "a specific set of instructional materials that order content used to support pre-K-grade 12 classroom instruction" (p. 36). The field of curriculum design and assessment is extensive, and a student undertaking a curriculum development project should expect to develop familiarity with important principles before working to design curriculum. Clements (2007) identifies a Curriculum Research Framework consisting of three phases:

  • A priori foundations : In this phase, the subject matter and pedagogical bases of the curriculum are established. The guiding principles and reasons for decisions are well-established.
  • Learning model : Here, existing research and prior knowledge are consulted in constructing a model for student thinking and learning specific to the particular subject addressed in the curriculum.
  • Evaluation : In the evaluation phase, curriculum standards, guidelines, standards, and audience factors are considered, and field tests are conducted to refine the curriculum.

It should be noted that these phases are not distinct but part of an interwoven cycle. For instance, some evaluation will take place even during the foundations stage, and each phase will be revisited multiple times. A student engaging in a curriculum development project might choose a unit or topic for the focus of the project. Limiting the subject matter focus of the project permits a sufficient level of detail and analysis. The project should address all three phases of Clements' (2007) framework, justifying curricular decisions through established research knowledge, developing learning models, and evaluating the curriculum. It is possible that a student may choose to devote more attention to a certain phase if they develop more original or unique approaches to a specific aspect of curriculum development. For instance, if a student develops new models for learning a particular subject instead of drawing on previously-established models, the project may address that phase in more depth than others.

Informal Teaching Experiment

A teaching experiment is a method for investigating the impact on teaching techniques or approaches on students' learning and understanding of mathematics. Steffe and Thompson (2000) describe the methodology as follows: "It is primarily an exploratory tool, derived from Piaget's clinical interview and aimed at exploring students' mathematics ... the teaching experiment is directed toward understanding the progress students make over extended periods. ... In this, it is a living methodology designed initially for the exploration and explanation of students' mathematical activity" (p. 273).

Teaching experiments are based on the understanding that individual students construct their own conceptions of mathematics independent of the mathematical understandings of teachers and other students (though a students' conceptions are certainly shaped by interactions with others). A teaching experiment, then, is an opportunity to investigate and analyze students' mathematical understanding. It differs from a curriculum development project in focus. A curriculum development project is primarily focused on analyzing the curriculum and instructional approach, whereas a teaching experiment is primarily focused on analyzing student thinking and knowledge. In many cases, this is done by an in-depth analysis of student cognition as students engage in learning mathematics in a single classroom, or by comparing student learning in two classes where different approaches are taken. In either case, attention should be paid to the fact that the lack of randomized assignment of students and other factors contributes to problems of generalizability. Nevertheless, teaching experiments provide valuable information to those who teach mathematics. A capstone project that adopts a teaching experiment approach will identify a domain of mathematical knowledge that is of particular interest and design a method for investigating and analyzing how students come to learn or understand a particular topic or in a particular context.

In-depth analysis of a single, well-bounded case can often provide a level of detail that isn't available with other types of projects. Though there are a variety of ways of conceptualizing case study, a prototypical case study may be defined by characteristics listed by VanWynsberghe and Khan (2007):

  • Intensive and in-depth focus on a small sample, such as a single classroom or a very small number of students,
  • Highly detailed context, carefully descriptions of the particular instance,
  • Natural settings where the researcher does not exert control over organization or behavior. VanWynsberghe & Kahn note that "case study is uniquely suitable for research in complex settings because it advances the concept that complex settings cannot be reduced to simple cause and effect relationships." (p.4)
  • Bounded by a specific time frame or particular context.
  • Working hypotheses are constructed during data collection and analysis. A case study is not designed to test a hypothesis, but understanding of a phenomenon emerges over the course of the study.
  • Drawing from multiple sources of data.

Critics of case study research point to the fact that the reliance on a single case means the conclusions of such a study are not necessarily generalizable. While true, this does not mean that case studies do not produce generalizations. Indeed, much of our individual knowledge is drawn from specific cases, and case studies can be instrumental in generating theories and disproving theories (Flyvbjerg, 2001). See Erlwanger's (1973) case study of a student's fraction arithmetic rules in a self-guided curriculum or Raymond's (1997) case study of a teacher's practice mirroring her own experience as a student instead of her teacher preparation program for two excellent examples of how case studies have served such a role in mathematics education research.

A capstone project adopting a case study approach will identify a phenomenon (perhaps a lesson, a class, a few students, a single student, a single teacher) that is of interest, justifying the focus on that particular case. The project should then seek to collect a variety of data in order to describe the case and generate working hypotheses throughout the process. The final product will include a rich description of the case along with supporting evidence and lessons learned from the research.

Senior Capstone

The purpose of the senior capstone is to engage each senior in the exploration and communication of mathematical ideas encountered in 300+ level mathematics/statistics coursework and beyond.

Basic Components

The student independently studies a topic of interest and creates a poster covering their topic. The student gives a 20-minute presentation of the poster to an audience of mathematics and statistics faculty and later participates in the Senior Mathematics & Statistics Poster Symposium, where they share their work with the wider Kenyon community.

Requirements and Important Dates

  • Student selects a topic .
  • Student submits a formal proposal describing the proposed topic for their poster and presentation .
  • Student presents the background and preliminaries of their topic to peers in the Senior Seminar .
  • Student presents their main results and the implications of those results to peers in the Senior Seminar .
  • Student completes and submits an electronic version of their poster .
  • Student presents their poster to mathematics and statistics faculty members .
  • Students participate in the Senior Mathematics & Statistics Poster Symposium .

1. Student selects a topic.

As this is the capstone experience for the mathematics major, we expect the work to build on earlier intermediate and advanced work in the discipline. In choosing a topic, the student has four options:

  • Historical Approach to a Contemporary Research Problem: The poster presents a contemporary open problem in mathematics or statistics, discusses historical approaches to the problem, and reports on progress that has been made.
  • Summary of Research or Internship: The poster summarizes mathematical or statistical results stemming from the student’s experience in an undergraduate research program or in an internship involving mathematical or statistical ideas at the 300+ course level.
  • Introduction to a 300+ Level Math/Stat Course Topic: The poster provides a lively presentation of a specific topic from a 300+ level mathematics or statistics course that is accessible to a junior/senior-level mathematics major who has not taken the course.
  • Presentation of a Topic Leading into Honors Study: The poster describes material the student has learned in preparation for a spring-semester Honors project in Mathematics or Statistics.

The student's topic should be of suitable difficulty — not too easy and not too hard. If in doubt, the student should consult with faculty members about this. Once the student has a topic and a few print resources (books or articles) in mind, they should approach one or more faculty members to consult on the suitability of the proposed topic and to discuss ideas for the proposal.

Students should have topic ideas and some resources in hand no later than the first week of the fall semester. (Classes begin Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024.) We encourage students to begin thinking about possible topics in the spring of their junior year.

2. Student submits a formal proposal describing the proposed topic for their poster and presentation.

Even though the proposal itself is fairly short, the amount of work that goes into it is much greater. Writing a good proposal requires a reasonably good understanding of the major ideas and technical material involved in the topic. Before attempting to write the proposal:

  • The student needs to understand the general motivation behind the topic.
  • The student needs to identify the end-goal(s) for the senior capstone. 
  • The student needs to make sure they have the necessary background and appropriate resources for completing the topic. 
  • The student needs to be fairly sure the project is doable in the given timeline. 

In other words, the student cannot write a reasonable proposal without studying their major resources enough to get a good sense of the topic, its difficulty, and its feasibility. All of this requires a substantial amount of reading and background work prior to writing the proposal. Therefore the preliminary work needs to begin several weeks in advance of this first deadline.

In addition to extensive reading, the student should be consulting with one or more faculty members who will be able to give guidance on end goals and feasibility. It will ordinarily take several discussions with faculty members to really narrow down the goals of the project.

Students should not underestimate the importance of the preparation step or the amount of work that goes into it. This is a big part of the overall senior capstone project and a big deadline.

The proposal must include:

  • a description of the topic: this is more than the mere title of the topic. The description should include motivation and describe the basic ideas underlying the topic. It should also state specific end-goals and the nature of the mathematical material that is needed and will be covered. The description should also explain how the topic fits the students’ background and interests in mathematics. The student should also be careful to choose a topic that has substantial content and that is also doable in the timeline given for the senior capstone. 
  • an annotated bibliography saying generally what is in each source and how the student expects the source to contribute to the eventual poster, (these annotations need not be extensive; keep them general and short, but writing them will require the student to have done some reading in the source.)
  • a list of courses the student has had that will support study of the topic, and
  • a summary of the discussions the student has had with faculty members concerning the topic.

Deadline for the Proposal:  Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, by 4 p.m. Departmental Response by:  Friday, Sept. 13, 2024

3. Student presents background and preliminary information to peers in the Senior Seminar.

Students present the mathematical background information and preliminary results for their projects in 7- to 10-minute talks to a subset of the seminar class. Seminar students in the audience and the seminar instructor will provide constructive feedback based on this presentation.

Background/Preliminary Presentations:  during seminar on the week of Monday, Sept. 16, 2024.

4. Student presents main results and the implications of those results to peers in the Senior Seminar.

Students present main results and implications (with significant mathematical content) from their projects in 7- to 10-minute talks to a subset of the seminar class. Seminar students in the audience and the seminar instructor provide constructive feedback based on this presentation.

Results/Implications Presentations: during seminar on the week of Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.

5. Student completes and submits an electronic version of their poster.

Students submit complete, electronic but print-ready, versions of their posters. Each poster should be designed to facilitate an accessible, efficient and engaging presentation of the topic to an audience of peers. To this end, the poster should include all components necessary to tell a complete story about the student’s project. This may include, but is not limited to, definitions, examples, theorems (and their proofs), applications, and any other critical content.  Visualizations should be incorporated to support the story line and to convey key concepts, when appropriate. The poster will be submitted to the Senior Seminar Moodle page.

General Poster Instructions:

  • The poster will be formatted using a template provided in Senior Seminar.
  • The poster should be self-contained. The necessary background, basic definitions, and useful examples must be explicitly included so that the audience can understand it without consulting other sources. The poster may, however, assume the general background covered in the core courses in mathematics and (if necessary) the material covered in other math courses the student has taken at Kenyon.
  • The poster text should be written so that it is understandable to junior/senior-level mathematics majors. 
  • The poster should include graphics, data, and/or calculations that facilitate understanding of the topic.
  • When using multiple sources for the project, the student will be expected to coordinate and systematize material from these sources. This includes standardizing the notation, which often varies from one source to another.
  • Information presented on the poster should be well-organized with appropriate headings, and the student is expected to use correct English and mathematical grammar throughout.

Deadline for Electronic Poster:  Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, by 4 p.m.

6. Student presents their poster to mathematics and statistics faculty members.

Each student gives a 20-minute oral presentation of their poster to an audience of Mathematics and Statistics faculty at an assigned date and time. This will be followed by a question and answer session with the faculty members. In this presentation, the student will tell a complete story about the topic they have selected, highlighting the components of their poster.

Poster Presentations: Wednesday, Nov. 13, Thursday, Nov. 14, and Friday, Nov. 15, 2024, at times to be specified.

General Presentation Instructions:

  • Like the poster, itself, the presentation should be a self-contained story of the student’s results. Any background information necessary to understand the story should be included, beyond the core course content for the mathematics major.
  • The student should practice their presentation to ensure that they meet the 18- to 20-minute time requirement.
  • After the formal presentation, the student should be prepared to respond to questions posed by the mathematics and statistics faculty members in attendance.
  • The presentation will be evaluated on the correctness, completeness, and clarity of the presented material.

7. Student participates in the Senior Mathematics & Statistics Poster Symposium.

All students will participate in the Senior Mathematics & Statistics Poster Symposium. At the Symposium, students will present their work to the wider Kenyon community.

Poster File:  Final poster files must be submitted by Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at 4 p.m.

Poster Symposium:  Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024, from 11:10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Evaluation of the Capstone

The department will evaluate each senior capstone poster and presentation (the result being either distinction, pass, or failure) using the criteria on this rubric.

The student's work will be rated as exemplary, acceptable, marginally acceptable or unacceptable in each category. An evaluation of "unacceptable" on any component of the senior capstone may be considered grounds for failure. To achieve distinction on the senior capstone, each component of the evaluation must be judged “exemplary.”

Second Chance to Pass the Capstone

College policy provides each student who fails their senior capstone the first time with a second chance. If the senior capstone poster and/or presentation was found to be unacceptable, the student will be required to construct a poster and make a presentation on a topic chosen by the department. The second poster and presentation will be due during the penultimate week of classes in the spring semester. Other (preliminary) deadlines will be imposed by the department in consultation with the student.
