Ancient Greek mythology is a vast group of legends about gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters, warriors and fools, that were an important part of everyday life in the ancient world. Greek myths explained everything from religious rituals to the weather, and gave meaning to the world that people saw around them. While many of these myths are fanciful tales, such as the legends of greedy King Midas or heroic Hercules, other stories like the Trojan War epic have a basis in historical fact.

Sources of Greek Mythology

There is no single original text, like the Christian Bible or the Hindu Vedas, that introduces all Greek myths’ characters and stories. Instead, the earliest Greek myths were part of an oral tradition that began in the Bronze Age , and their plots and themes unfolded gradually in the written literature of the archaic and classical periods of the ancient Mediterranean world.

The poet Homer ’s 8th-century BC epics, The Iliad and The Odyssey , for example, tell the story of the Trojan War as a divine conflict as well as a human one. They do not, however, bother to introduce the gods and goddesses who are their main characters, since readers and listeners would already have been familiar with them.

Around 700 BC, the poet Hesiod’s Theogony offered the first written cosmogony, or origin story, of Greek mythology. The Theogony tells the story of the universe’s journey from nothingness (Chaos, a primeval void) into being, and details an elaborate family tree of elements, gods and goddesses who evolved from Chaos and descended from Gaia (Earth), Ouranos (Sky), Pontos (Sea) and Tartaros (the Underworld).

Later Greek writers and artists used and elaborated upon these sources in their own work. For instance, mythological figures and events appear in the 5th-century plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides and the lyric poems of Pindar. Writers such as the 2nd-century BC Greek mythographer Apollodorus of Athens and the 1st-century BC Roman historian Gaius Julius Hyginus compiled the ancient myths and legends for contemporary audiences.

Many high school, college and professional sports teams (Titans, Spartans and Trojans, for instance) also get their names from mythological sources.

At the center of Greek mythology is the pantheon of gods and goddesses who were said to live on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. From their lofty perch, they ruled every aspect of human life. Olympian deities looked like men and women (though they could change themselves into animals and other things) and were — as many myths recounted — vulnerable to human foibles and passions..

The twelve main Olympians are:

  • Zeus (Jupiter, in Roman mythology): the king of all the gods (and father to many) and god of weather, law and fate
  • Hera (Juno): the queen of the gods and goddess of women and marriage
  • Aphrodite (Venus): goddess of beauty and love
  • Apollo (Apollo): god of prophesy, music and poetry and knowledge
  • Ares (Mars): god of war
  • Artemis (Diana): goddess of hunting, animals and childbirth
  • Athena (Minerva): goddess of wisdom and defense
  • Demeter (Ceres): goddess of agriculture and grain
  • Dionysus (Bacchus): god of wine, pleasure and festivity
  • Hephaestus (Vulcan): god of fire, metalworking and sculpture
  • Hermes (Mercury): god of travel, hospitality and trade and Zeus’s personal messenger
  • Poseidon (Neptune): god of the sea

Greek mythology does not just tell the stories of gods and goddesses, however. Human heroes — including Heracles (aka Hercules), the adventurer who performed 12 impossible labors for King Eurystheus (and was subsequently worshipped as a god for his accomplishment); Pandora, the first woman, whose curiosity brought evil to mankind; Pygmalion, the king who fell in love with an ivory statue; Arachne, the weaver who was turned into a spider for her arrogance; handsome Trojan prince Ganymede who became the cupbearer for the gods; Midas, the king with the golden touch; Narcissus, the young man who fell in love with his own reflection; and Kratos, a god of strength and power—are just as significant.

Monsters and “hybrids” (human-animal forms) also feature prominently in the tales: the winged horse Pegasus, the horse-man Centaur, the lion-woman Sphinx and the bird-woman Harpies, the one-eyed giant Cyclops, automatons (metal creatures given life by Hephaestus), manticores and unicorns, Gorgons, pygmies, minotaurs, satyrs and dragons of all sorts. Many of these creatures have become almost as well known as the gods, goddesses and heroes who share their stories.

The Legacy of Greek Myths

The characters, stories, themes and lessons of Greek mythology have shaped art and literature for thousands of years. They appear in Renaissance paintings such as Botticelli ’s Birth of Venus and Raphael ’s Triumph of Galatea and writings like Dante ’s Inferno ; Romantic poetry and libretti; and scores of more recent novels, plays and movies. Much of the mythology was recorded in D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths , published in 1962 and still in print today.

Myths and Legends: Concepts of Ancient Myths and Modern Scientific Thoughts Essay

Mythology is an interwoven and complex subject, which is most often seen as fictional, unreal, and fabulous. However, modern scientific thoughts sometimes have a lot in common with myths that prove the fact that mythology is not only a fairy tale, but it also contains an important message from previous generations to their offspring. The examples of myths that are supported by modern historical, astronomical, medical, physical, economic, and even philosophical findings are multiple including the myth of Ramayana, the creation story of Zuni’s emergence, the Native American myths, the myths by famous storytellers of ancient times such as Homer, Ovid, and Hesiod, etc. In the following paper, common patterns and concepts of Ancient myths and modern scientific thoughts will be observed to identify the objectives that people from previous generations had when they created myths.

Although today, the very word “myth” is seen as an unreal story, something not to be believed in, and something having a romanticized nature, there exist common patterns and messages in Ancient methodology and modern scientific thoughts that suggest a different point of view on myths. First of all, modern literature has its origin in ancient myths. For example, myths help explain the movement of the Sun and changing of seasons in the creation story of Zuni’s emergence (Thury and Devinney 95). It is the source of the cultural rituals that exist until now and is mostly practiced by different religions like the burning of effigies on pyre for Heracles in commemoration of his burning on a funeral pyre on Mt. Seat (Thury and Devinney 496). It is also considered as the source of societal expression of social practices like the patriarchal tradition in the myth of Ramayana, where King Dasaratha as a father hesitates at first to send his son Rama to interact with the Titans because he wants to protect his son from danger (Thury and Devinney 245).

Next, the incorporation of ancient mythology to modern scientific thoughts tends to discuss not only the story of an individual, time or place, but also beliefs, and lifestyle importance. This means that it does consider not only what can be seen, but also the things unseen. Every myth has a basis of its creations, characters, and adventures including destruction or victory that may be represented by the duality of our reality, yet most share common patterns and thoughts causing the existence of similar modern thoughts and patterns. Some common patterns and messages shared by the ancient cultural mythological stories to the modern tales are individual characters, journeys, facts of existence, place, and object.

Further, myths offer the popular idea that an individual is sometimes concerned about the model of “god or goddess”, the concept of a hero, and the perception of natural objects or animals, which are shown as personages. For example Odysseus as a hero character in the myth Iliad and Odyssey by Homer is also indicated in the work of James Joyce Ulysses based on Homers epic (Thury and Devinney &729). In the relationship of narrative to a myth, “James Joyce’s Ulysses showed incorporation of its own, the figure and theme of traditional mythology” (Thury and Deviney 727). The pattern tends to exist because modern writers show great respect to old themes, but use the modern literary devices, which their audience expect, and create narratives from their own belief system, and alter them as aspects of that system change (Thury and Devinney 728). One more illustration of the personified natural objects or animals is “the raven” similar to the man “Silva” (Thury and Devinney 370; 718). These two Native American mythical characters are similar figures as a trickster and mythological animals. The writers of the Native American oral myths in a contemporary context enrich their storytelling using the concepts from their mythic heritage (Thury and Devinney 714). This means that the Native American writers tend to give voice to a diverse and changing cultural value, identity or belief. The concept of “god” and “goddess” characters can be considered as metaphors for elements of human society. In the myth of Heracles, Zeus is considered a patriarch, a father, and a husband, and Hera is a mother, and a wife. Their family is a reflection of our families; their hierarchies establish a relationship of a tale to myth in the modern society (Thury and Devinney 549).

In addition, journeys may deal with heroic endeavors or mythical events. In the incorporation of tale to myth, this pattern may be shown in the work of Vladimir Propp, who “classified characters according to their actions and analyzes each tale into series of plots called function” (Thury and Devinney 551). Like in the myth of Odyssey, Odysseus underwent series of hardships before going home to Ithaca (Thury and Devinney 11).

Besides, the Fact of existence may be concerned about commemorative cultural rituals and celebrations or as a standard of conduct. According to Turner, “ritual is not just only a symbolic language but also series of actions performed by participants” (417). His work The Forest of symbol: Aspects of Ndembu Ritual focuses on the rite of passage (419), which can be seen in the work of Joseph Campbell as an element to a heros journey by “crossing of the threshold” (185) like the myth of Heracles who underwent the same rites of passage in a period of his military training for becoming a soldier (496), and in order to become immortal, he would have to undergo series of labors (497). As ritual patterns, in a fairytale-like myths, there are origins of the collective “folk” mind (546). The essential similarities indicate collective authorship to attempt to make earth-conscious of itself. For example of ritual pattern is the Odysseus itself a literary hero and a mytho-religious figure, whose journey is rooted in a ritual pattern involving loss, descent, and rebirth (14). This is similar to humanity’s story of loss and rebirth, leading to inversion of social roles in The Goose Girl in society (581). As standard of conduct, Freud believes that all men are subject to the “Oedipus complex” based on myth of King Oedipus (406). Freud’s view of myth became a part of the explanation or rationalization for why the story had retained its significance throughout centuries ( Thury and Devinney 406).

Finally, stories of mythical places and objects exist within many cultures today, and are used as sources of entertainment and research. Like mythical place, the archeological evidence of the Trojan War called “Troy Villa” suggests that it is not just a false story. Archeologist Carl Blegen believes that this confirmed Homers account of the Trojan war (Thury and Devinney 11). All in all, ancient mythology shared different characteristics to modern thoughts according to Freud and Jeung:

Folktales are related to dreams like myth may represent something that is essential to what it is to be human. Fairy tales share similar characteristics to myths like handed down orally rather than being written like the Native American myths. They are related to rituals and that they are stories that give meaning to the pattern of action practiced in the society that tells them (547).

As a final point, mythology and modern science often have common concepts and patterns. For example, myths help explain the movement of the Sun and changing of seasons in the creation story of Zuni’s emergence, and establish a relationship of a tale to reality in the modern society in the myth of Heracles, where Zeus is considered a patriarch, a father, and a husband, and Hera is a mother, and a wife, which reflects modern concepts of a family. The presence of numerous similarities between ancient myths and modern scientific thoughts can be explained by the fact that mythology is not just a piece of ancient fiction, as it is accepted by many people, but it is a powerful message containing eternal wisdom that ancient people aimed to communicate to their descendants.

WHERE DO MYTHS, LEGENDS AND FOLKTALES COME FROM?

The British Isles have a very long history, stretching back well before written records began. Much of what we might think of as early history is really legend – tales about the Druids, the story of Cædmon (the ‘father of English poetry’, who lived at Whitby Abbey) and the exploits of King Arthur for example. Interwoven with our understanding of history are the threads of myth, legend and folklore; these shape and colour our understanding of both our past and our present.

WHAT ARE MYTHS, LEGENDS AND FOLKLORE?

Myths  are usually understood as stories about gods or divine figures. They answer big questions such as: how was the world created? Where do humans come from? How did we learn to make fire, or to smith metal? What is the origin of the gods? The term ‘myth’ may be used more loosely to cover whole cycles of tales, like the stories of the Irish gods or the Four Branches of the Mabinogi, dealing with Welsh semi-divine characters. Stories that explain where certain peoples come from are known as ‘origin myths’; the most important and enduring origin myth for Britain is the legend of Brutus, a refugee from Troy who sailed to these shores and slew all the giants who were then the only inhabitants, giving his name to the British Isles.

Legends  deal with heroes, imagined as human or superhuman, such as St George, Robin Hood, or Hereward the Wake. Sometimes there is a semi-historical basis for these stories. Hereward was a real person, descended from Viking lords on the one hand and English nobility on the other, who led a resistance movement to the Normans after  the Conquest . Legends usually have a close connection with a particular place, such as Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood, or  Tintagel , where King Arthur is said to have been conceived,  Stonehenge , or  Dover Castle , where the skull of Arthur’s famous knight, Sir Gawain, was long preserved.

Folklore  covers a range of beliefs, from the existence of fairies who dance in certain places when the moon is full, to the habits of the Loch Ness Monster, to the belief that witches can turn into hares and steal milk from cows. Many of our most familiar stories, of dragons, black dogs, kelpies or hobs, are folkloric; they contain motifs which are commonly found in other stories told across Europe, or they tap into beliefs that are widely held across the British Isles.

Myths and legends have the remarkable property of often being rooted in particular places, and yet their general outlines tend to be surprisingly universal. Similar stories occur all over the world, varying only in particular details. So, versions of Cinderella or the Three Men who went to Search for Death can be found in places as far apart as China, India, Britain and North America. Sometimes it’s clear that these stories spread through migration, and were then passed down by word of mouth across the generations – thus, quite a few English folktales and ballads made it to North America and are still in circulation to this day.

WHY ARE THEY SHARED?

The explanation for these internationally shared tales may be that they are rooted in general human experience. Our shared biology and universally similar life-cycles, from birth, marriage, child-rearing, ageing and death, may generate broadly similar stories: about true love or the perils of raising children, or futile attempts to surmount the barrier between life and death. Such dilemmas and difficulties are common to humans wherever they live, giving rise to universal patterns in the world’s store of traditional tales.

Experts are divided about exactly how stories develop and spread from place to place, but it is clear that myths and legends have always had important roles in our culture. Short tales are crucial in imparting vital information or life lessons in a memorable form – think of The Boy Who Cried “Wolf”, for example. Useful lore is transmitted from generation to generation in a brief and comprehensible form. They explain why small children shouldn’t be allowed to stray near a dangerous body of water or why it may be a bad idea to go up into the mountains alone. Groups that know how to pass on such stories improve the life-chances of those who hear them, and those folk in turn pass on the stories to their children.

Traditional tales often hinge on ethical or moral issues, or they permit insight into the way other people think. So they insist that you should keep your promises – and should avoid making rash ones; that courage and perseverance will be rewarded and that the wicked do not prevail in the end. It’s not always the big, beefy hero that is lauded in such tales; cunning and quick-wittedness, associated very often with the youngest child, or with a poor person can solve the immediate problem and win the day for the hero.

FAMOUS BRITISH MYTHS

The British Isles have their myths and legends, preserved in some of our earliest written records. The story of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who battled monsters and a dragon, probably originated in eighth-century Northumbria, although it was not written down until the early eleventh century. Irish legends of gods and heroes were also written down in the twelfth century or later. In Welsh there are heroic poems from as early as the sixth century; one such poem contains the first ever reference to the hero Arthur.

England’s most famous heroes are probably King Arthur and Robin Hood.

KING ARTHUR

Arthur is a blended type of heroic figure. Some of his characteristics stem from a legendary Welsh hero who fought monster-cats and dog-headed men and who went off to the Underworld to steal a magic cauldron. Yet Arthur also takes inspiration from a British war-leader, mentioned in early chronicles, who led his people against the invading Saxons. Arthur’s first full biography was related by Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1138, but elements of the story were already widely known across Europe. In the mid-fifteenth-century, Sir Thomas Malory who was confined as a prisoner in the Tower of London, wrote down the best-known version of the Arthur story, incorporating into it tales of the Knights of the Round Table, and the Holy Grail. Malory included the ancient mythic ending, in which Arthur does not die after his last battle, but rather is borne away by boat to the Isle of Avalon. He will return to come to the country’s aid in Britain’s darkest hour.

There are references to various men called Robin Hood in thirteenth-century records, though it is not until 1377 that we hear of tales of ‘Robin the Outlaw’ being told in the tavern. Legends about Robin and his men, clad in Lincoln Green, who haunt Sherwood Forest, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, are first printed in the late fifteenth century. Later still, Robin is transformed from a thuggish and immoral thief to a dispossessed nobleman in exile in the greenwood.

These two myths became very popular once again in the Victorian period. Both stories were mobilised for political and ideological purposes. Arthur, the great king who ruled over much of the west and whose knights battled evil, rescued maidens and sought the Holy Grail, served as a model for Britain’s imperial and enlightened rule. Wherever the British went, the myth suggested, they tried to behave nobly, to establish law and order, and to bring Christian values to ‘less civilised’ peoples. Robin Hood and his Merry Men spoke to ideas of a peculiarly English democratic tradition and independence of mind. Robin stood for fairness and justice, for a certain amount of distribution of wealth, and he hated the hypocrisy and corruption of the establishment: the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and the bloated and greedy churchmen whose treasures Robin regularly stole. Robin came to stand for the sturdy average Englishman, mistrustful of authority, but loyal to his rightful king, gallant towards women and with a marked sense of humour. Both these mythic figures had important work to do in the contemporary culture of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

HOW DO WE KNOW ABOUT THESE STORIES?

British myths, legends and folktales have survived in all kinds of different contexts. Some – like the stories of Brutus or Hereward the Wake – are recorded in medieval chronicles that purport to be ‘actual’ history. Others were written down as entertaining tales in early manuscripts, and from there were put into book form once the printing press was invented. Still other stories were not written down until the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries, when people captured legends and folktales that were on the verge of dying out; many of our best sources for traditional stories are to be found in late eighteenth-century books of ballads or in Victorian folk-tale compilations.

Myths and legends began to be recorded just as soon as humans mastered the technology of writing. Often the very first texts were hymns to the gods or collections of mythological stories that became organised into cycles, explaining how the world was created, how humans came into existence or why Death is necessary. Such stories are recorded in the Bible – the Fall, Noah’s Flood, for example – and in Greek myth. Hero-tales are also among the most ancient of story-types.

In contrast to these very ancient written sources, most of the world’s myths and legends have been preserved in oral versions, passed on by word of mouth from one generation to the next. The recording of these tales began only in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when explorers, scholars and anthropologists became interested in tradition, and were motivated to learn tribal languages and to record with pen and ink (and subsequently electronically) the vivid and unfamiliar tales they were told.

MYTHS AND THE MODERN WORLD

Over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries myths, legends and folktales began to be seen as the province of children. They could be retold in simple and wholesome ways, shaped in order to point up important morals and to recommend particular models of behaviour. The King Arthur myth became a staple of children’s literature, and the Knights of the Round Table, in particular such figures as Sir Galahad or Sir Lancelot, were held up as exemplifying the ideal of chivalry.

In the twentieth century, writers such as J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and after them, Alan Garner, Susan Cooper, Philip Pullman and J. K. Rowling seized on the myths and legends of the British Isles to inspire new fantasy worlds for both children and adults. The Old English epic of Beowulf, the first dragon-fighter in our tradition, inspired Tolkien’s Smaug in The Hobbit. The legend of King Arthur and the Sleeping Knights features in Garner’s stories about Alderley Edge; he also transposes a story from the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi to contemporary Wales in The Owl Service. Susan Cooper melds together Welsh legend, Arthurian myth and the tradition of Herne the Hunter. Pullman and Rowling appropriate both English and wider European folk-tradition in the worlds of their novels: house-elves and black dogs jostle with giants, witches and fairies, talking bears and hippogriffs.

These authors wrote initially for a young adult audience, but the children and teenagers that learned to love this kind of story-telling grew up to appreciate – and to write their own – fantasy of various kinds. From the Star Wars films, which depend on classic models of the hero and the princess, good and evil, quests and family identity, to the powerful mythological elements that underlie the work of George R. R. Martin and the hit HBO TV series ‘Game of Thrones’, the elements of traditional story have crossed over into popular culture. ‘Game of Thrones’ contains elements of Old Norse myth – the ravens and direwolves, the Long Winter and the wights. The tale of Atlantis is reflected in the history of Valyria, and Westeros has its very own King Arthur, the lost heir who must reclaim his kingdom, in the form of Jon Snow.

Vampires and werewolves, creatures from European tradition symbolise contrasting elements in human nature: violence and desire, beauty and horror, featuring in titles such as the Twilight series and Buffy the Vampire-Slayer. Also drawing on myth from Scandinavia is the Thor franchise, while other superhero series use similar tropes of hero and monster, re-tooling and modernising many of the characters, themes and stereotypes of myth and legend. They are staples of video games that are often set in fantasy universes and structured around the quest as a framework.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLACE IN MYTH

Alongside the grand figures of gods, demi-gods, heroes and monsters that feature in the great myths and legends of the British Isles, there are many less well-known stories that often adhere to particular landscapes and places. One such is the story of how Merlin came to magic the Giant’s Dance stone circle away from Ireland across the sea to form  Stonehenge  as a monument to the great Romano-British battle leader Ambrosius Aurelius.

Many  famous historic sites  of the British Isles have long and fascinating pasts, and have played their part in the events that have shaped the nation. But just as many – perhaps even more – are linked to myths, legends and folktales, from the great legendary cycles of Arthur or Robin Hood, to figures such as Wayland of  Wayland’s Smithy  on the Ridgeway. He was a legendary smith, the most skilled craftsman of all, whose brutal story of maiming and cruel vengeance is retold in Anglo-Saxon sculpture and poetry, and in Old Norse legend. Britain’s landscapes and historic buildings form the backdrop to the vivid and exciting myths, legends and folktales of our spoken and written heritage; stories that fascinate, astonish and move us still today.

Myths are the stories created by the humans of ancient civilizations in order to explain how the world and nature work. Since, for the ancient civilizations, it was almost impossible to explain how certain natural events occur all around the world. Human nature, inherently, needs to feel safe and secure in the midst of mysterious chaos and the unknown; therefore, some stories, which describe mighty Gods that protect humans as well as the underworld of evil, are made up by humans to calm their anxieties and fears, stemming from what they call evil. After that, these stories spread amongst people and, finally, become an integral part of the culture of their society.

This paper aims at exploring myth as a phenomenon of culture. The authors have used anthropological integrative approach, semiotic method of representing myth as a language of culture, as well as phenomenological method. Myths provide meaning and purpose to all elements of culture. Myth underlies cultural reality – it is a core of culture. If we imagine culture as an onion comprised of different layers (the “onion” model of culture), than myth is the center of it – it is a core beyond articulation. It generates our beliefs and assumptions that are rarely explicated, however there beliefs and assumptions shape both the structure of personality and culture. They are taken for granted, but support any culture. They manifest themselves in an explicit form in values, purposes, goals, strategies, philosophies, which motivate us and shape our reality. Mythology is one of the ways to comprehend and interpret the world around us. Its basic concepts are the “world” and “human”. Through the lens of these concepts, people realized their destiny in the world and formed life attitudes during the early stages of human development. Giving place to philosophy and science, mythology has not lost its important place in human history. Mythological narratives were borrowed by many religions. In recent decades, representatives of literature and art have intentionally used myths to express their ideas. They have not only rethought ancient myths, but have created new mythological symbols. Nowadays, an interest in myths and mythologies has dramatically increased, and it is not by chance. The famous researchers of the primitive cultures and mythologies as the ways of mastering and interpreting the world have demonstrated the creative power and heuristic potential of myths that will be manifested in the future.

Humans have always speculated about their past. As a result, traditions of mythology exist in every society around the globe, with most cultures having developed their own independent foundation myths to explain why society is as it is. Their abundance throughout human history argumentatively embodies the notion that myth provides the underlying essence of human culture and social organization.

Generally mythology is understood as the collection of stories of deities, superhuman beings and contains several miracles. The term is a combination of two words- ‘mythos’ and ‘logos’. ‘Mythos’ is the utterance prone to imagination, rather than truth and ‘logos’ is the meaning conveyed by this utterance. But the term ‘mythology’ goes even beyond a simplistic meaning and connotes a systematic study of myths. Myths take us to the remote period when the world was young and when the humans were close to nature. The myths are the innocent expressions of the perceptions of human minds. There are several types of myths. Nearly every civilisation has myths about the origin of universe. Since there was awe about phenomena of nature many myths were connected to performance of rituals- the rituals being considered as solutions to natural calamities. Myths about the divine origin of dynasties offered legitimacy to their political rule. The incident of death has been a riddle to humans because of the inquisitiveness as to what happens to the soul when it departs from the body. Consequently, myths sprang on the life-after-death world. In the absence of development of science, human body was considered to be under the vigilance of divine and superhuman powers and any disobedient behaviour on the part of human beings was ascribed to the wrath of these powers. Hence myths were formed on the theme of diseases. With the renaissance and reformation during medieval times and mainly with the advance of science myths seemed to evaporate. But the quest of human mind for the universe is unending and hence the process of myth-making continues. Myths have not vanished but have assumed many forms like science- fictions or the movies picturing the mysteries of other worlds.

If there is anything that radically set the 20 th century apart from what had gone before, it is the two unprecedented developments: the birth of psychology and the rise of the fantastic. The two processes were not unrelated: psychology came in the wake of discovering that the human mind contains a dimension that is only partially accessible to consciousness. The literary fantastic, in turn, was an attempt to explore this dimension and its influence on the human mind. Both psychology and the fantastic identified myth to be foundational for their fields, either as a record of alternative modes of thought or as a narrative strategy hardwired into human cognitive architecture. One result of this rediscovery of myth has been the proliferation of myth theories. In this chapter I look at four approaches to myth that have not made it into the myth theory canon. These include Immanuel Velikovsky's euhemerist reading of world myths as a memory of cosmic catastrophes and near-extinction events witnessed by various human societies in the past; Julian Jaynes' proposal about Greek myths—especially those recorded in the Iliad—as narrative accounts of bicameral consciousness that preceded our modern subjective consciousness; Sean Kane's comparative perspective on world mythtelling traditions as forms of humanity's dialogue with nature; and Jonathan Gottschall's social Darwinist reading of the Iliad and the Odyssey that positions these texts as narrative testimonies of a struggle for Darwinian fitness within an exacting eco-cultural niche. Starting with a brief taxonomy of myth theories, their types, and contexts in which they emerged and functioned, I call attention to the fact that any theoretical approach to myth is inescapably mythopoeic. Departing from the proposition that the formation of myths is a typical feature of being human, their truth or falsehood is explored. Referring primarily to classical mythology, a myth is defined as a story which attempts to make sense of our inner and external environments. Supernatural agents are the main actors. Various theories about the functions of myths are discussed. Their basic embeddedness within the premodern three-storeyed vision of the cosmos, is set out. The value of myth analysis is illustrated by referring to New Testament Studies, Political Studies, Film Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Communication Studies, and the Science of Management. The article concludes by demonstrating the dangers of reading myths literally, as in fundamentalist Christianity, undermining free and open critical inquiry and leading to mind-control, manipulation, and persecution.

Despite his initial disbelief, King Augeas, who owned the stables, refused to honour his agreement to reward Hercules. This myth illustrates Hercules’ wit and problem-solving skills, showcasing that strength alone is not always the solution. It also highlights the theme of justice as Hercules faced an unfair situation and ultimately demonstrated his capabilities through intelligence and resourcefulness.

  • Backstories : Provide backgrounds for your characters. What events or experiences have shaped them into who they are at the beginning of the myth?
  • Motivations : Explore the motivations driving your characters. What do they desire, fear, or hope to achieve? Motivations often propel characters forward in the face of adversity.
  • Flaws : Characters with flaws are relatable and dynamic. What imperfections or internal struggles do your characters grapple with? How do these flaws contribute to their arcs?

By extension from this primary religious meaning, the word myth may also be used more loosely to refer to an ideological belief when that belief is the object of a quasi-religious faith; an example would be the Marxist eschatological myth of the withering away of the state.

While the outline of myths from a past period or from a society other than one’s own can usually be seen quite clearly, to recognize the myths that are dominant in one’s own time and society is always difficult. This is hardly surprising, because a myth has its authority not by proving itself but by presenting itself. In this sense the authority of a myth indeed “goes without saying,” and the myth can be outlined in detail only when its authority is no longer unquestioned but has been rejected or overcome in some manner by another, more comprehensive myth.

The word myth derives from the Greek mythos , which has a range of meanings from “word,” through “saying” and “story,” to “fiction”; the unquestioned validity of mythos can be contrasted with logos , the word whose validity or truth can be argued and demonstrated. Because myths narrate fantastic events with no attempt at proof, it is sometimes assumed that they are simply stories with no factual basis, and the word has become a synonym for falsehood or, at best, misconception. In the study of religion , however, it is important to distinguish between myths and stories that are merely untrue.

The first part of this article discusses the nature, study, functions, cultural impact, and types of myth, taking into account the various approaches to the subject offered by modern branches of knowledge.
