GOD (2023) Telugu Movie: What's Behind

Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara, who previously delivered an enthralling thriller in Thani Oruvan, have sparked significant anticipation for their latest collaboration, GOD. The movie had already premiered in Tamil under the title "Iraivan" a couple of weeks ago. Now, let's delve into what GOD has in store for movie enthusiasts. Additionally, it's worth noting that the film's OTT rights have been secured by Netflix, with streaming details set to be announced at a later date.

The plot of GOD revolves around the chilling tale of a psychopathic killer running amok in the city, instilling fear in the hearts of its residents. The central question is whether the dedicated police force can apprehend this murderer before more lives are taken. Arjun (Jayam Ravi) and Andrew (Narain), both resolute cops with strong camaraderie, lead content lives until tragedy strikes in the form of the enigmatic Bramma (Rahul Bose).

This unexpected turn of events profoundly impacts not only the officers but also innocent civilians, weaving a complex web of connections that link the gruesome murders of young women, including Andrew's wife Jasmine (Vijayalakshmi), their daughter Sophia, and Andrew's sister Priya (Nayanthara), into the fabric of the unfolding narrative.

Jayam Ravi's Telugu Dub Movie GOD: Artists Review

Jayam Ravi delivered a commendable performance in his role as a resolute and unyielding police officer. His portrayal showcased strong body language and adept emotive skills, captivating the audience with his on-screen presence. Rahul Bose, though given limited screen time, effectively instilled fear in the minds of viewers, leaving a memorable impact. Similarly, Vinod Kishan also made the most of his limited role, adding to the tension and intrigue of the narrative. Narain's portrayal as the other police officer was noteworthy, contributing to the ensemble cast's quality.

On the other hand, Nayanthara played the quintessential girlfriend character who remained oblivious to the challenges and turmoil in Jayam Ravi's life, effectively executing her role within the confines of the character's archetype.

Iraivan Telugu Version GOD: Technicians Review

In GOD, director I. Ahmed attempts to craft a psycho-thriller narrative that revolves around the complex dynamic between a hero and a villain who both believe themselves to be almighty. However, beyond this intriguing premise, the film falls short on several fronts. The storyline is disappointingly straightforward, devoid of the unexpected twists and turns that keep audiences engaged. It fails to establish an emotional connection with the viewers, opting instead to rely on graphic violence as a means of shock, which ultimately proves ineffective.

While the screenplay shows promise to a certain extent, the conflicting ideologies and thought processes of the protagonist and antagonist come across as incredibly implausible. The investigation and resolution of the case appear predictable, and numerous scenes defy logic. The film's portrayal of senior figures granting Jayam Ravi unwarranted authority and taking orders from him raises eyebrows.

The movie commences on an intriguing note but rapidly loses steam, with forced fight sequences contributing to a decline in interest. Rather than emphasizing the threat of the psycho killer at large, the director shifts the focus towards a personal vendetta between the cop and the antagonist, detracting from the central plot. Regrettably, the storyline bears a resemblance to previous films and fails to introduce anything novel. The dialogues, while passable, don't leave a lasting impact.

Hari K. Vendantam's cinematography stands out as a highlight, enhancing the narrative's seriousness. Yuvan Shankar Raja's background music is serviceable but fails to leave a lasting impression. The editing by Manikanda Balaji could have been more polished. Production values, on the other hand, meet the expected standards.

Altogether, GOD disappoints as it turns out to be a heartless and soulless thriller. Director Ahmed missed the opportunity to bring out the best in Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara by failing to create powerful, engaging characters. Instead, the film overly fixated on showcasing the brutality of the murders on the big screen. This approach to glorification and sensationalization ultimately backfired, as the film's plot lacked originality, and the screenplay and direction seemed aimless. Taking all these aspects into account, Cinejosh gives GOD a rating of 1.5.

Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara’s God has hit the screens today. The film is directed by I. Ahmed. Let’s see how it is.

Arjun (Jayam Ravi) is a cop who takes the law into his hands and kills criminals. He has a dear friend, Andrew (Narain), who also is a police. Meanwhile, a psychopath killer named Brahma (Rahul Bose) creates havoc by killing young women. Arjun catches Brahma, but the psychopath kills Andrew. Arjun leaves the police job and takes care of Andrew’s family. One day, Brahma escapes from police custody, instilling fear in the public. What happens next? Did Brahma get caught? This is what the film is about.

Plus Points:

Jayam Ravi is too good in the cop role, and he shoulders the film all the way. His intense and fierce performance as Arjun is superb. His body language and expressions are spot-on. Jayam Ravi played similar roles in the past as well and hence brought his experience to the table.

Narain, Vijayalakshmi, and Ashish Vidyarthi are good in their respective roles. Music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja gave it his all and tried to create maximum impact with his stunning background score.

Minus Points:

Films based on serial killers have started to lose their charm of late as the makers are resorting to the same tried and tested formula in this genre. God also has joined the list of those movies. Ratsasan has set a standard among crime thrillers, and filmmakers must come out of Ratsasan’s hangover as soon as possible. It is high time that makers must come up with fresh narratives to impress the audience.

There are two categories in these kind of films. A few directors wish to reveal the killer in the first place, while a few wish to reveal in the end. God belongs to the first category, and there is absolutely no issue as long as the proceedings are thrilling. But the screenplay is dull in God with bland and repetitive scenes.

Nothing excites us, as there aren’t any gripping moments. The police investigation angle is poorly showcased as they fail to catch the criminal every single time. There is a key twist in the film which introduces us to a new character. Though the role is played by a good actor, the way it is written causes irritation completely.

The very reason why the killers commit crimes is the most essential aspect of these crime thrillers, but that has been showcased in a poor manner. Also, God has a lot of resemblance to a recent blockbuster that has come in the same genre. A great actress like Nayanthara doesn’t have much to do in the film. The climax is stretched for no reason.

Technical Aspects:

Music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematographer Hari K. Vedanth gave their best to the film. The film’s colour palette is very good, and the production values are fine, too. The editing is decent. The Telugu dubbing is excellent.

Coming to the director Ahmed, he did a poor job with God. He has chosen a template-based story and narrated it in a boring and unexciting manner. There are absolutely no edge-of-the-seat moments, and even the main twist lacks the punch.

On the whole, God is a boring crime thriller that has a tried and tested storyline. The movie offers nothing new and is filled with monotonous scenes. The psychopath’s character and the police investigation angle are poorly designed. On top of that, the main twist and an another key character are annoying. Jayam Ravi’s honest performance and solid technical values stand out in this lackluster crime thriller.

క‌థేంటంటే: అర్జున్ (జ‌యం ర‌వి) అసిస్టెంట్ పోలీస్ క‌మిష‌న‌ర్‌. భ‌య‌మంటే ఏమిటో తెలియ‌ని వ్య‌క్తిత్వం త‌న‌ది. కోపం.. దూకుడు రెండూ ఎక్కువే. నేర‌స్థుల్ని శిక్షించే క్ర‌మంలో అవ‌స‌ర‌మ‌నుకుంటే చ‌ట్టాన్ని మీర‌డానికైనా వెన‌కాడడు. త‌న‌ మిత్రుడు, స‌హోద్యోగి ఆండ్రూ (న‌రైన్) అంటే అర్జున్‌కు చాలా ఇష్టం. అత‌ని కుటుంబాన్ని సొంత కుటుంబంలా భావిస్తుంటాడు. వృత్తిప‌రంగా సాఫీగా సాగిపోతున్న వారి జీవితాల‌కు స్మైలింగ్ కిల్ల‌ర్ బ్ర‌హ్మ (రాహుల్ బోస్‌) రూపంలో స‌వాల్ ఎదుర‌వుతుంది.సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ అయిన అత‌ను న‌గ‌రంలో అనేక మంది యువ‌తుల్ని కిడ్నాప్ చేసి.. వారిని అత్యంత పాశ‌వికంగా హ‌త్య చేసి త‌ప్పించుకు తిరుగుతుంటాడు. (God Movie Review) దీంతో అత‌ని ఆట‌క‌ట్టించేందుకు అర్జున్ బృందం రంగంలోకి దిగుతుంది.  అయితే బ్ర‌హ్మ‌ను ప‌ట్టుకునే క్ర‌మంలో అనుకోకుండా ఆండ్రూ ప్రాణాలు కోల్పోతాడు. ఆ బాధ‌లో అర్జున్ డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్ నుంచి త‌ప్పుకొంటాడు. కానీ, బ్ర‌హ్మ జైలు నుంచి త‌ప్పించుకోవ‌డంతో క‌థ మ‌ళ్లీ మొద‌ట‌కొస్తుంది. న‌గ‌రంలో వ‌రుస హ‌త్య‌లు మ‌ళ్లీ మొద‌ల‌వుతాయి. అయితే ఈసారి బ్ర‌హ్మ.. అర్జున్ స‌న్నిహితుల్నే ల‌క్ష్యం చేసుకోవ‌డం ప్రారంభిస్తాడు. మ‌రి ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఏమైంది?  సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ బ్ర‌హ్మ‌ను ప‌ట్టుకునేందుకు అర్జున్ ఏం చేశాడు? ఈ క్ర‌మంలో అత‌నికి ఎలాంటి స‌వాళ్లు ఎదురయ్యాయి?  వాటిని త‌నెలా ప‌రిష్క‌రించాడు? ప్రియాతో అత‌ని ప్రేమాయ‌ణం ఏమైంది? అన్న‌ది మిగతా క‌థ‌.

ఎలా సాగిందంటే:  ఓ సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్‌.. న‌గ‌రంలో వ‌రుస హ‌త్య‌ల‌కు పాల్ప‌డ‌టం.. అత‌ని ఆట క‌ట్టించేందుకు క‌థానాయ‌కుడు రంగంలోకి దిగ‌డం.. త‌న తెలివితేట‌ల‌న్నీ ఉప‌యోగించి ఆఖ‌రికి సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్‌ను అంత‌మొందించ‌డం.. ఇలా సైకో థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ క‌థ‌ల‌న్నీ ఇంచుమించు ఒకే మూస‌లో సాగుతాయి. (God Movie Review) దీంట్లో నేరం జ‌రుగుతున్న తీరు.. వాటి చుట్టూ అల్లుకున్న మైండ్ గేమ్‌.. దాన్ని క‌థానాయ‌కుడు ఎంత తెలివిగా ఛేదించాడ‌న్న అంశాల‌పైనే చిత్ర విజ‌యం ఆధార‌ప‌డి ఉంటుంది. ఇందుకోసం బిగిస‌డ‌ల‌ని స్ర్కీన్‌ప్లేను సిద్ధం చేసుకోవాలి. అప్పుడే ఇంత‌ చిన్న పాయింట్‌తో ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని రెండున్న‌ర గంట‌లు థియేట‌ర్ల‌లో కూర్చోబెట్ట‌గలుగుతారు. అయితే ఈ చిత్ర విష‌యంలో ఆ ప్ర‌య‌త్నం స‌గమే విజ‌య‌వంత‌మ‌య్యింది. నేరం జ‌రిగే తీరు.. దాన్ని చూపించిన విధానం ఉత్కంఠ‌భ‌రితంగా ఉన్నా.. దాని చుట్టూ అల్లుకున్న మైండ్‌గేమ్ అంత ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా ఉండ‌దు. దీంతో ఇదొక స‌గ‌టు థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌గానే మిగిలిపోతుంది.  అర్జున్ పాత్ర‌ను ప‌రిచ‌యం చేస్తూనే.. క్ష‌ణం ఆల‌స్యం చేయ‌కుండా అస‌లు క‌థ‌ను మొద‌లు పెట్టాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. న‌గ‌రంలో 25ఏళ్ల లోపు అమ్మాయిలు ఒకొక్క‌రిగా కిడ్నాప్ అవ్వ‌డం.. వారు సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ బ్ర‌హ్మ చేతిలో అత్యంత దారుణంగా హ‌త్య‌కు గుర‌వ‌డం.. అత‌న్ని ప‌ట్టుకునేందుకు హీరో గ్యాంగ్ రంగంలోకి దిగ‌డం.. ఇలా తొలి 10నిమిషాలు క‌థ‌నం చ‌క‌చ‌కా సాగిపోతుంది. కానీ, ఆ త‌ర్వాత నుంచి క‌థ‌లో ఎలాంటి వేగం క‌నిపించ‌దు. (God Movie Review) సైకో హ‌త్య‌లు చేసే తీరును చూపించ‌డానికి ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు మ‌రీ ఎక్కువ స‌మ‌యం తీసుకున్నాడు.  ఆ హ‌త్య‌ల‌న్నీ ఒళ్లు గ‌గుర్పాటుకు గురి చేసేలా ఉంటాయి. అయితే అవి మ‌రీ సుదీర్ఘంగా సాగ‌డంతో ఓ ద‌శ త‌ర్వాత స‌హ‌నానికి ప‌రీక్ష‌లా తోస్తాయి. పోలీసులు పెద్ద‌గా క‌ష్ట‌ప‌డ‌కుండానే సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ వాళ్ల‌కు చిక్క‌డంతో అప్ప‌టి వ‌ర‌కు ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్లో సినిమాపై ఉన్న కాస్తంత ఆస‌క్తి కూడా పూర్తిగా చ‌చ్చిపోతుంది.  ఎప్పుడైతే బ్ర‌హ్మ పోలీసుల నుంచి త‌ప్పించుకుంటాడో అప్ప‌టి నుంచి క‌థ‌లో మళ్లీ క‌ద‌లిక మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. విరామానికి ముందు క‌థానాయ‌కుడు సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్‌ను మ‌ట్టుబెట్ట‌డం.. అదే స‌మ‌యంలో అతని వెన‌క మ‌రో సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ ఉన్నాడ‌ని తెలియ‌డంతో ద్వితీయార్ధంపై ఆస‌క్తి పెరుగుతుంది.

ప్ర‌థమార్ధంలాగే ద్వితీయార్ధం కూడా సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ చేసే వ‌రుస హ‌త్య‌ల‌తో మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. అయితే ఈసారి ఆ నేర‌స్థుడు క‌థానాయ‌కుడు స‌న్నిహితుల్నే ల‌క్ష్యం చేసుకుంటుండ‌టంతో క‌థ‌లో సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. అంత‌కు ముందు వ‌ర‌కు వ‌రుస హ‌త్య‌లు చేసింది చ‌నిపోయిన బ్ర‌హ్మ‌నా.. అత‌ని వెన‌కున్న మ‌రో కిల్ల‌రా? అనే విష‌యంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు న‌డిపిన డ్రామా బాగుంది. జైలులో సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ బ్ర‌హ్మ త‌న‌లా మ‌రో వ్య‌క్తిని త‌యారు చేసే తీరు ఆస‌క్తిరేకెత్తిస్తుంది. (God Movie Review) అయితే ద్వితీయార్ధంలోనూ హీరో బుర్ర‌కు ప‌దును పెట్టే స‌న్నివేశం ఒక్క‌టీ క‌నిపించ‌దు. బ్ర‌హ్మ వెన‌కున్న మ‌రో సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్‌ను ప‌ట్టుకోవ‌డం కోసం అత‌ను పెద్ద‌గా క‌ష్ట‌ప‌డ‌డు. అలా చూసీ చూడ‌గానే త‌నే వ‌రుస హ‌త్య‌లు చేస్తున్నాడ‌ని హీరో క‌నిపెట్టేయ‌డం.. సైకో కిల్ల‌రే త‌న క‌థ‌ను అత‌నికి స్వ‌యంగా చెప్ప‌డం ఏమాత్రం ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా అనిపించ‌వు. ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాలు ఆద్యంతం ఉత్కంఠ‌భ‌రితంగా ఉంటాయి. హీరో.. సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ త‌ల‌ప‌డే తీరు బాగుంటుంది.

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: అర్జున్ పాత్ర‌లో జ‌యం ర‌వి ఆద్యంతం సీరియ‌స్ లుక్స్‌తో క‌నిపించారు. సినిమా మొత్తం ఆయ‌న చుట్టూనే తిరుగుతుంది. దూకుడైన స్వ‌భావం గ‌ల పోలీస్‌గా స‌హ‌జ‌మైన న‌ట‌న‌తో మెప్పిస్తాడు. ఈ క‌థ‌లో న‌య‌న‌తార పాత్ర రెండు మూడు స‌న్నివేశాల‌కే ప‌రిమిత‌మైంది. ఇందులో ఆమె పాత్ర లేకున్నా క‌థ‌కు వ‌చ్చే న‌ష్ట‌మేమీ లేదు. ఆమె పాత్ర‌ను పెట్ట‌డం అన‌వ‌స‌రంగా సినిమాలో ఓ పాట‌ను కూడా ఇరికించాల్సి వ‌చ్చింది. (God Movie Review) సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్స్ పాత్ర‌లు చేసిన ఇద్దరు న‌టులూ తమ‌దైన న‌ట‌న‌తో క‌ట్టిప‌డేశారు. ఆశిష్ విద్యార్థి, న‌రైన్‌, వినోద్ కిష‌న్‌, విజ‌య‌ల‌క్ష్మీ త‌దిత‌రుల పాత్ర‌లు ప‌రిధి మేర‌కు ఉన్నాయి. ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు క‌థ‌ను ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా తీర్చిదిద్దుకోవ‌డంలో త‌డ‌బ‌డ్డాడు. సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్స్ బ్యాక్ స్టోరీస్‌ను చూపించ‌లేదు. అలాగే వాళ్లు అత్యంత పాశ‌వికంగా హ‌త్య‌లు చేయ‌డానికి వెన‌కున్న కార‌ణాన్ని వివ‌రించ‌లేదు. అయితే వారు హ‌త్య‌లు చేసే తీరును మాత్రం గ‌గుర్పాటుకు గురి చేసేలా చూపించారు. యువ‌న్ శంక‌ర్ రాజా నేప‌థ్య సంగీతం సినిమాకి బ‌లాన్నిచ్చింది. ఛాయాగ్ర‌హ‌ణం, నిర్మాణ విలువ‌లు బాగున్నాయి.

God Movie Review and Rating:  Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara starrer God Movie released on October 13 (today) for the Telugu audiences. 

Story:  Arjun (Jayam Ravi) works as an Assistant Commissioner.  He believes that it is right to kill the wrongdoers. Arjun takes on the responsibility of catching the killer Brahma (Rahul Bose). Arjun’s best friend Andrew (Narain) dies while trying to arrest the psycho killer Brahma. Even after catching the killer, the girls are not only kidnapped one after the other, they are brutally killed. Who actually kills them? Why is that psycho killer doing that? How Arjun caught them is the rest of the story.

 Performance:  Jayam Ravi has done full justice to the role of a very angry police officer.  His performance in the role of a police officer who is desperate to save his loved ones from the clutches of a psycho killer is impressive. Nayanthara’s role in the film is short. Her character has no importance. Rahul Bose’s villainy and looks are good as a psycho killer. Vinod Kishan impresses in the negative shades role. Rest of the cast performed accordingly.

Technical:  Music is the main weapon of thriller movies. Because it has less songs and has just background score. Yuvan Shankar Raja gave his 100% in this regard. Even though it is only a two hour movie, the second half felt very slow. It would have been better if the editor and director had discussed this matter more. Cinematography work is very good. Production values are good. It seemed that director Ahmed concentrated on the first half and left the second half. If there was a more tight screenplay, the movie would have definitely been impressive.

 Analysis:  Psycho killer stories are not new to the Telugu industry. Many movies have already come out in this format. But there is no such thing as a new story in such movies. It must be said that the director of God movie Ahmed was not completely successful in this regard. Ahmed told the already familiar story with a more routine screenplay. The story progresses slowly till the climax as he guesses who the villain is. The ending creates some interest but not the edge of the seat.

God Movie Review: నయనతార `గాడ్‌` మూవీ రివ్యూ, రేటింగ్‌

జయం రవి, లేడీ సూపర్‌ స్టార్‌ నయనతార కలిసి నటించిన మూవీ `గాడ్‌`. ఇది తెలుగులో నేడు (శుక్రవారం) విడుదలైంది. మర్దర్‌ మిస్టరీ నేపథ్యంలో సైకో థ్రిల్లర్‌గా రూపొందిన ఈ చిత్రం ఆకట్టుకుందా? అనేది రివ్యూలో తెలుసుకుందాం. 

లేడీ సూపర్‌ స్టార్‌ నయనతార ఓ వైపు స్టార్‌ హీరోల సినిమాల్లో హీరోయిన్‌గా నటిస్తూనే లేడీ ఓరియెంటెడ్‌ చిత్రాలు చేస్తుంది. హీరోలకు ధీటుగా సినిమాలు చేస్తూ సత్తా చాటుతుంది. తాజాగా ఆమె జయం రవితో కలిసి `గాడ్‌` మూవీలో నటించింది. ఐ అహ్మద్‌ దర్శకత్వం వహించిన ఈ చిత్రాన్ని సుధన్‌ సుందరం, జి జయరాం, సీహెచ్‌ సతీష్‌ కుమార్‌ నిర్మించారు. తమిళంలో రూపొందిన ఈ చిత్రం అక్కడ గత వారం విడుదలైంది. తాజాగా నేడు(శుక్రవారం-అక్టోబర్‌ 13)న తెలుగులో రిలీజ్‌ అయ్యింది. మరి సినిమా ఎలా ఉందో రివ్యూలో (God Movie Telugu Review) తెలుసుకుందాం.   

కథః సీటీలో సైకో కిల్లర్‌ వరుస హత్యలకు పాల్పడుతుంటాడు. అమ్మాయిలను టార్గెట్‌ చేస్తూ అత్యంత దారుణంగా చంపేస్తుంటాడు. న్యూడ్‌గా చంపివదిలేస్తుంటాడు. తన సింబల్‌గా స్మైల్‌ గుర్తులను వదిలుతాడు. అలా స్మైలీ సైకో కిల్లర్‌గా పాపులర్‌ అవుతాడు. ఆ కేసుని పోలీస్‌ ఆఫీసర్స్ అర్జున్‌(జయం రవి), ఆండ్రూ(నరేన్‌) డీల్‌ చేస్తుంటారు. అనేక హత్యల అనంతరం ఎట్టకేలకు కిల్లర్‌ని పట్టుకుంటారు. అతడు స్మైలీ కిల్లర్‌ బ్రహ్మా(రాహుల్‌గా బోస్‌) గా గుర్తిస్తారు. కానీ అతన్ని పట్టుకునే సమయంలో జరిగిన గొడవలో ఆండ్రూ చనిపోతాడు. ఆ తర్వాత అంతా ప్రశాంతంగా ఉందనుకునే సమయంలో కొన్ని రోజులకు ఆ కిల్లర్‌ ఆసుపత్రి నుంచి తప్పించుకుంటాడు. మళ్లీ వరుసగా అమ్మాయిలను కిడ్నాప్‌ చేసి హత్యలు చేస్తుంటాడు. టార్గెట్‌ అర్జున్‌ ఫ్యామిలీ మెంబర్స్ అవుతారు. అలా బంధువు కూతురు కిడ్నాప్‌ చేసి చంపేస్తాడు. ఆ కసితో బ్రహ్మాని పట్టుకుని చంపేస్తారు అర్జున్‌ అండ్‌ పోలీస్‌ టీమ్‌. కానీ మళ్లీ అదే స్టయిల్లో అమ్మాయిల హత్యలు జరుగుతుంటాయి. మరి కొత్తగా జరిగే హత్యలకు కారకులు ఎవరు? ప్రాణంగా ప్రేమించే ప్రియా(నయనతార)ని అర్జున్‌ ఎందుకు దూరం (God Movie Review) పెడుతున్నాడు? ఆ తర్వాత చోటు చేసుకున్న ట్విస్ట్ లేంటి? అనేది సినిమా.

విశ్లేషణః మర్డర్‌ మిస్టరీలు, సైకో కిల్లర్‌ చేసే హత్యల నేపథ్యంలో అనేక సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్‌ చిత్రాలు, సైకో థ్రిల్లర్‌ మూవీస్‌ వస్తూనే ఉన్నాయి. వాటిలో కొన్ని హిట్‌, మరికొన్ని ఫట్టు. ఇలాంటి సినిమాల్లో ఎంగేజింగ్‌ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే ముఖ్యం. ట్విస్ట్ లు వాహ్‌ అనిపించాలి. ఆడియెన్స్ ని థ్రిల్‌కి గురి చేయాలి. సినిమా రేసీగా సాగాలి. అప్పుడే సినిమా ఆడియెన్స్ కి కనెక్ట్ అవుతుంది. సక్సెస్‌ సాధ్యమవుతుంది. లేదంటే రొటీన్‌ మూవీ ట్రాక్‌లో పడిపోతుంది. జయం రవి, నయనతార కలిసి నటించిన `గాడ్‌` చిత్రం కూడా ఈ విషయంలో రొటీన్‌ ట్రాక్‌లోనే పడిపోయిందని చెప్పొచ్చు. నెక్ట్స్ ఏం జరుగుతుంది? ఎలాంటి సీన్లు ఎదురవుతుంటాయనేది ఊహించేలా, అర్థమయ్యేలా ఉండటం (God Movie Review) ఈ సినిమాకి మైనస్‌. నయనతార, జయం రవి నటించిన సినిమా అంటే ఆడియెన్స్ లో మంచి అంచనాలుంటాయి. బలమైన కంటెంట్‌ ఉంటుందనే భావనలో ప్రేక్షకులు ఉంటారు. కానీ ఈ సినిమా మాత్రం ఈ విషయంలో నిరాశ పరిచింది. రొటీన్‌ సీన్లు, రొటీన్‌ హత్యలు, ఇన్వెస్టిగేషన్‌ ఎంతకూ ముందుకు సాగకపోవడం విసుగు తెప్పిస్తుంది. కిల్లర్‌ ఎవడో తెలిసినా పోలీసులు ఏం చేయలేని స్థితిలో ఉండటం, ఇన్వెస్టిగేషన్‌ సీన్లు రేసిగా లేకపోవడంతో బోర్‌ తెప్పిస్తుంది.   

దీనికితోడు స్లో నెరేషన్‌ కూడా సహనాన్ని పరీక్షించేలా ఉంటుంది. హీరో జయం రవి ఏం చేయలేని స్థితిలో కనిపిస్తుంటాడు. ప్రతి విషయంలో ఆయన స్లో రియాక్షన్‌ నిరాశ పరుస్తుంది. ఆయన పాత్రలో ఏమాత్రం హీరోయిజం (God Movie Review) కనిపించదు. అలాగే నయనతార పాత్రని కేవలం ఆయనకు లవర్‌గానే పరిమితం చేశారు. మరోవైపు కిల్లర్‌కి సంబంధించిన ట్విస్ట్ ని రివీల్‌ చేసేటప్పుడు కిక్‌ ఇవ్వలేదు. బలమైన ట్విస్ట్ లు లేవు. దర్శకుడికి పోలీస్‌ ఇన్వెస్టిగేషన్‌కి సంబంధించిన అవగాహన లేదని ఆయా సీన్లని చూస్తే అర్థమవుతుంది. అయితే సినిమాలో కొన్ని సీన్ల వరకు బాగున్నాయి. ఎంగేజ్‌ చేస్తాయి. హత్యలకు సంబంధించిన కొన్ని డ్రామా సీన్లు బాగున్నాయి. మరో హంతకుడు ఎవరు? అనేది ఎంగేజ్‌ చేస్తుంది. అలాగే కిడ్నాప్‌కి గురైన అమ్మాయిలను పట్టుకునే సమయంలో వచ్చే సన్నివేశాలు ఆద్యంతం ఉత్కంఠభరితంగా సాగుతాయి. హత్యలు చేస్తున్నది ఎవరనేదానిపై వచ్చే ట్విస్ట్ లు ఆడియెన్స్‌ లో ఉత్కంఠ రేకెత్తిస్తాయి. కానీ చివరగా దాన్ని తగ్గట్టుగా కిల్లర్‌ లేకపోవడం, పైగా కిల్లర్‌కి (God Movie Review) బలమైన కారణాలు లేకపోవడం కన్విన్సింగ్‌గా అనిపించదు. దీంతో ఇదొక రెగ్యూలర్‌ సైకో కిల్లర్‌ నేపథ్యంలో సాగే మర్డర్‌ మిస్టరీ చిత్రంగా నిలుస్తుంది. హత్యలకు సంబంధించిన ఎంచుకున్న అంశాలు కొన్ని కొత్తగా ఉంటాయి.

In this harrowing true story of faith, passenger Doug White (played by Dennis Quaid) sets out on what seems like a routine flight to fly home from a funeral with his family. During the flight, the pilot unexpectedly dies mid-flight. Doug has to figure out how to fly the plane and land it safely.

On A Wing And A Prayer is based on a series of true events that took place in 2009 when Doug White and his family were returning home from a funeral in Marco Island. Their pilot Joe Cabuk suddenly died of a heart attack. Doug had logged 150 hours of flying a single-engine plane, but he had never flown a King Airplane, nor had he ever flown over 7,000 feet.

3) Miracle at Manchester

Miracle At Manchester revolves around the true story of Bryce Newman who battled an aggressive form of brain cancer as a schoolboy back in 2015. At just 15 years old, Bryce endured multiple brain surgeries, a staph infection that nearly killed him, and temporary paralysis of his entire right side, among other things. Yet, he trusted the Lord throughout it all and received a miraculous healing.

“I always had that confidence and that faith that God’s got this, and I’ve just got to focus on doing what I can, but I know that He had the bigger picture,” Bryce recalled . He also said, “I knew I was going to be healed. Whether it was a miracle or not, I knew the healing was going to happen.”

The community rallied around Bryce in prayer. And this Christian movie from 2023 shows how during his battle, two other men “find their own restoration in his healing journey and a father finds his faith again.”

4) Sound Of Freedom

The film is based on the true story of a government agent, Tim Ballard, played by Jim Caviezel. While working for the Department of Homeland Security, Tim rescues a young boy from child traffickers. However, he learns the boy’s sister was kidnapped and is being held captive in another country.

The film is about one man, Rickey Hill, who despite his obvious physical challenges, persisted and persevered to achieve his dream of playing Major League Baseball.

17) God’s Country Song

In God’s Country Song , a young man by the name of Noah Bryan (Juston Gaston) has dreams of being a famous country singer when his hopes are dashed by his own poor choices. Not only does he fall from stardom because of fighting and drinking, he thinks his life is over when he discovers he is a father to six-year-old JJ whose mother passed away.

With his dreams seemingly as broken as the relationship he has with his own father, Noah discovers grace and what it means to be loved by his earthly father and heavenly father. Juston spoke about what his character Noah was going through.

He said, "It's easy to get caught up in earthly, worldly things. [Noah is] so caught up in, quote-unquote, ‘make it' that he's forgotten where he came from and his moral compass a bit. Which is very easy to do, I feel, when you're not grounded in [a] community," He added, "He's having trouble getting right with God because he and his father are having an issue. That's hindering his openness to God."

18) Camp Hideout

Release Date: September 2023 | Rating: PG

This new Christian movie in 2023 promises to deliver something of a rare treat: a live-action comedy that is appropriate for the whole family.

Camp Hideout follows a troubled teen named Noah who goes to camp in an attempt to escape from two clueless “bad guys.” However, they end up tracking Noah down. The film has been likened to a cross between Home Alone and Ernest Goes to Camp. And by the end of the movie, Noah comes to realize “there are people that love him, that care about him and that it’s not too late for him to be saved.”

19) Journey To Bethlehem

Release Date: November 2023 | Rating: PG

The story of the birth of Jesus has been told in many ways but never quite like this. Journey To Bethlehem weaves classic Christmas melodies into new pop songs in a music-infused retelling of the timeless story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus.

This live-action musical with Antonio Banderas promises to be an epic Christmas musical unlike any before it!

20) The Shift

Release Date: December 2023 | Rating: Not rated by the MPAA

The Shift is definitely not your typical Christian film. It falls into the realm of science fiction and explores a “multiverse” of alternate realities. It is the first original theatrical release by Angel Studios (the studio behind The Chosen) and hosts a star-studded cast: Neal McDonough ( Band of Brothers ), Sean Astin ( Lord Of The Rings ), Kristoffer Polaha ( Wonder Woman 1984 ), Rose Reid ( Finding You ), John Billingsley ( Star Trek: Enterprise ) and Emily Rose ( Haven ). Liz Tabish, Paras Patel and Jorden Walker Ross from The Chosen will also be featured.

The fast-paced thriller centers around a man named Kevin Garner. He finds himself faced with infinite worlds and impossible choices after encountering a nefarious adversary known as The Benefactor. Kevin declines The Benefactor’s offer to work with him spreading chaos and now must fight to escape an alternate totalitarian reality and make it back to the world he knows and the woman he loves.

“If you are a fan of The Chosen , it's going to make sense spiritually, and also artistically," said Dallas Jenkins, creator of The Chosen and executive producer on The Shift . " The Shift is a project in which truth is dominant and God is present, and we desperately need that."

NEW YORK (OSV News) – Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan can be credited with a certain degree of originality in the crafting of his thriller “Trap.” And, though the film as a whole turns out to be an odd mix of interesting plot twists and yawning improbabilities, there’s little on screen that would bar older teens from reaching into this cinematic grab bag.

Can a brutal serial killer successfully double as a suburban family man? As far as seemingly devoted dad Cooper (Josh Hartnett) is concerned, the answer is yes. Among those buying into his act is his typical-teen daughter, Riley (Ariel Donoghue).

To reward Riley for an outstanding report card, Cooper brings her to a concert by her favorite pop star, Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan). As Riley enthuses over the music, Cooper notices that an unusual number of police officers seem to be present at the event.

He eventually discovers that the authorities, led by profiler Dr. Josephine Grant (Hayley Mills), had obtained a clue indicating he would be there and now have him completely surrounded. Time for some quick thinking.

Is the idea that a psychopath could carry on healthy loving relationships such as Cooper has with Riley, his wife Rachel (Alison Pill) and his young son Logan (Lochlan Miller) intriguing or merely absurd? Certainly the origin story of Cooper’s madness – he’s haunted by visions of his overbearing mother (Marcia Bennett) — is straight out of Freud’s bargain basement.

So the proceedings come across as more than a bit muddled. And the concert scenes go on too long as well. But the action is restrained, objectionable elements are few and, to the extent that any message is conveyed, it’s that decent people can be almost as resourceful as a homicidal maniac.

The film contains mature themes, brief harsh violence, a few gory images, a couple of instances each of profanity and crass talk, numerous milder oaths and a single rough term. The OSV News classification is A-III — adults. The Motion Picture Association rating is PG-13 — parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

The Ten Best Films of 2023

How does one sum up a year that felt as tumultuous and unpredictable as 2023? It honestly did feel like an artistic turning point as franchises once deemed too big to fail fell apart, giving way to unpredictable blockbusters and heartfelt cinematic statements from some of the world’s best filmmakers. The list below is really a portrait of the year, one in which two debut films stand alongside works from acknowledged masters. A list that includes films that made millions of dollars alongside ones that are only now building an audience. A list that travels the world to elevate stories that resonate with universal truth and undeniable specificity at the same time. These are the films selected by the regular film reviewing staff of RogerEbert.com as the best of the year. 10. “ All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt “

Watching Raven Jackson ‘s debut feature film, “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” (produced by Barry Jenkins and developed through the Indie Memphis Black Filmmaker Residency for Screenwriting), is one of those startling cinematic experiences calling into question how filmmakers typically tell stories. We don’t realize the dominance of visual cliches until a filmmaker comes along and does it her own way. Chantal Akerman did it with “Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles,” Julie Dash did it with “ Daughters of the Dust ,” Lynne Ramsay did it with “ Morvern Callar “. Their cinematic language is as distinct as a fingerprint. 

The kaleidoscope of images in “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” shows the past existing alongside the present, memories bleeding forwards and backwards. Repeating sensory motifs rush forth in this story of a young girl growing up in the rural South: hands touching the dirt, preparing a fishhook, braiding hair, trailing through the river water, a mother’s hands washing her daughter’s back, loved ones clasped in wordless embraces. You get to know everyone through their hands, as radical a style as Terrence Malick’s sunlight-through-tree-leaves and whispering voiceovers. “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” is a kinesthetic experience. You see smells, feel sounds, dirt roads are to be tasted. Of course, Jackson also gives us memorable characters, steeping us in the family’s grief and joy, loss and sweetness. 

Raven Jackson is also a published poet. One of her poems, “After the Fire,” opens with:

Plants Mama should have swallowed as seeds swelled from mud like legs.

She’d sit on the porch, a green jar of pickles bouncing on her knees, tires eating stone.

The sensibility of “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” are in those evocative words. Jackson has made a film only she could make. It can’t be duplicated. It is hers and it is to be treasured. ( Sheila O’Malley )

9. “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret.”

Sincerity is what shines through brightest in “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.”

Adapting a book that’s meant so much to so many for so long might have been a daunting task, but writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig tapped into the truth in Judy Blume ’s classic and treated it with the complete respect it deserves—not reverence, mind you, because she made a few tweaks to inventively expand the beloved story. Those changes only made the experience richer, more emotional and hilarious, with moving results.  

What’s so enduring about the film, and the 1970 coming-of-age novel that inspired it, is its relatability across generations. When I read the book as a tween, I saw myself in 11-year-old Margaret (played with awkward charm and deep authenticity by Abby Ryder Fortson ) as she navigated the many obstacles of adolescence. When I watched the movie as an adult—as the mother of a teenager—I saw myself in Margaret’s mom, Barbara, as she did her best to guide her child through this hormonal minefield. Rachel McAdams gives the best performance of her lengthy and varied career here: She’s earthy, funny, sexy and heartbreaking. The supporting performances that get a lot of attention during awards season tend to be the big, showy ones, but what McAdams is doing here is exquisitely subtle in every moment.

The whole cast is terrific, including Benny Safdie as Margaret’s sweetly dorky dad, Kathy Bates as her quick-witted grandmother and Elle Graham as the frenemy who’s more complicated than she initially seems. These all feel like real, interesting people in a real, lived-in place. That’s one of the other miracles about “Margaret”: the way it vividly depicts its 1970s setting without going over the top into period kitsch (thanks to the detailed work of production designer Steve Saklad .) In a movie in which couch shopping serves as a symbolic subplot, “Margaret” lets you sink into a familiar feeling of comfort. ( Christy Lemire )

8. “ Barbie “

For once, the advertising tagline got it exactly right: “If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.” 

Barbie encompasses multitudes because she reflects all of the conflicted feelings that we have about who we want to be. Is she empowering because there is a Barbie in every possible aspirational profession or is she dooming us to despair because we can never live up to her airbrushed pink perfection? America Ferrara ’s frustrated speech about the impossible standards expected of women encapsulates many of the movie’s themes. 

But, like Barbie herself, the film is irresistibly enticing, with gorgeous settings and delightful songs.  In Barbie world, every day is perfect, and all problems are solved—for the Barbies. The smart script by Noah Baumbach and director Greta Gerwig shows us that characters can be isolated and unsatisfied even in an outwardly perfect world. We can laugh at the insecurity of Ryan Gosling ’s pitch-perfect Ken or the played-with-too-hard but somehow therefore wiser Weird Barbie, but they demonstrate the intensity of the wishes we project onto our toys. Then there’s the unloved Allan and quickly discontinued puberty Skipper, to remind us that as much as we may decry the commercialism of dolls like Barbie, consumers cannot be persuaded to buy everything corporations think up. The movie is so much fun it is easy to overlook how smart it is about humans and how our toys help us define our dreams. ( Nell Minow )

7. “ Poor Things “

A sexually liberated, lightly sci-fi Art Nouveau period piece is strange enough on paper. Filter that concept through the stylized performances and aggressive fisheye lensing of Yorgos Lanthimos , and you’ve got a true oddity of a film. “Poor Things” isn’t weird just to be weird, however. Every eccentric touch, from the anachronistic costuming to fairytale settings that unfurl like the pages of a pop-up book, reflect a stage in the evolution of our heroine, Bella Baxter ( Emma Stone ), from the reanimated corpse of a suicidal London housewife to a feminist firebrand and a true woman of the world. Bella is a singular force, and the world around her reflects that.

In a lesser actor’s hands, an environment this fantastic might threaten to swallow a character. But Emma Stone’s performance unfolds in stages, too, from the hesitant movements and sudden flashes of understanding of a newborn baby to the cool, bemused confidence of an undaunted woman. The men around Bella all exist on a spectrum, from Jerrod Carmichael ’s hardened cynic to Mark Ruffalo ’s hilariously fragile lothario who’s finally been beaten at his own lusty game. And each of them has something to teach Bella, although her journey—and “Poor Things,” for all of its much-ballyhooed sex scenes—isn’t really about them. Bella, being a Frankenstein’s monster type, doesn’t have a soul to worry about. And her explorations and adventures are free from the conventional restraints of Judeo-Christian morality. 6. “The Zone of Interest”

In recent interviews, Jonathan Glazer , the writer and director of the eerie, cold-blooded Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest,” sometimes emphasizes how unsure he was, both about what motivated him as well as if he could even complete the project. You might be uncertain, too, if you chose to make a disturbing fictional drama—and sometimes black comedy—about real-life Nazi Commandant Rudolf Höss ( Christian Friedel ) and his wife Hedwig ( Sandra Hüller ), who lived with their family in a well-maintained home at the Auschwitz concentration camp, with a vegetable garden and a pool.

“I genuinely don’t know why it’s in me,” Glazer told Screen Daily ’s Mark Salisbury . “There must be something in it that’s driving me forward. And often I’m not even sure what that is.” In pursuing his artistic compulsions, Glazer has captured the surreal disconnect between the life that the Hösses clearly preferred to be living and the one that was literally outside their door.

Glazer’s cast sometimes improvised with his encouragement. They were also filmed by Polish cinematographer Łukasz Żal , mostly with ten hidden cameras. The soundtrack, featuring a nightmarish sound design by Johnnie Burn and a typically bracing score by Mica Levi , adds another layer of disorienting, hyper-real dissonance.

The point of “The Zone of Interest” may be to confront us with its grotesque, bourgeois protagonists’ behavior, but the resulting drama often feels like a Kubrickian horror movie about the divide between what we recognize as human and what we’d rather not think about. ( Simon Abrams )

5. “ Asteroid City “

In the second half of his nearly 30-year career, Wes Anderson has continued to refine and evolve his style, often by taking lessons that he learned while directing animated movies (“The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “ Isle of Dogs ”) and applying them to his live-action projects, which increasingly embrace a not-meant-to-be realistic, almost-storybook aesthetic (“ Moonrise Kingdom ,” “ The Grand Budapest Hotel ,” “ The French Dispatch ”). He’s become more formally radical with each new project, using framing devices, multiple narrators, nods to other media, and other techniques to comment on storytelling at the same time that he tells the audience a story. That the story is often quietly devastating is a testament to Anderson’s understanding of his own methods—you’d think that a director who conspicuously foregrounds his technique would be incapable of moving audiences, yet here we are, wiping a tear away. “Asteroid City” might be the most innovative and quietly mysterious film Wes Anderson has ever made. 

It alternates a 1950s, black-and-white, squarish-format “televised theater” production (about the short life of a playwright who never finished a play titled Asteroid City ) with a widescreen Technicolor-ish fable, also called “Asteroid City,” set on a military base that gets locked down due to an extraterrestrial visitation, trapping a group of genius kids and their parents. The dialogue and production design amount to a cinematic encyclopedia of mid-20th century art and pop culture references, from the New York Method school of theater and the heyday of live TV drama to the “spiritual death in small-town America” genre of fiction, theater and film drama, represented by touchstones like “ The Misfits ,” “ Picnic ,” and “ The Last Picture Show ”. As the movie unfolds, the viewers begin to realize that neither the black-and-white nor the color sections are intended as “reality,” and that they aren’t going to get any explanations or summations, or for that matter, any hand holding at all. It’s up to you to meet the film halfway, give yourself over to it, and make it make sense to you, on your own level and in your own way. You know, art. ( Matt Zoller Seitz )

4. “ May December “

It’s fascinating to watch people try to put Todd Haynes’ latest masterpiece in a box. Is it camp? Is it a drama? A comedy? There’s almost a meta level to this conversation because it’s a film about an actress who thinks she can put people in a box too. The Juilliard trained Elizabeth Berry ( Natalie Portman ) comes to visit a woman named Gracie ( Julianne Moore ), who she thinks she’s figured out by researching her crime and its tabloid coverage. The lesson of “May December” is that no one is that easy, especially people who don’t operate in what we would call the normal world. 

Much has been made of Charles Melton’s brilliant turn as a man named Joe caught in a vulnerable eternal adolescence because he was forced to grow up too quickly, but Moore’s predator is just as removed from reality as she manipulates her husband and her children constantly for her own selfish needs. These are people moving in emotional quicksand—Joe reaches for any branch that could pull him out while Gracie pushes away any potential safety for either of them.

The fact that Elizabeth ends the film with no better understanding of Gracie and Joe than when she arrived in Georgia is essential to this film’s success and the daring tone of Samy Burch’s script, the year’s best. No wonder she can’t figure out who Gracie and Joe are—they have no idea themselves. ( Brian Tallerico )

3. “ Oppenheimer “

Christopher Nolan ’s epic follows its titular character, J. Robert Oppenheimer ( Cillian Murphy ), through the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II. As Oppenheimer trudges through scientific discovery and battles of ideology and ambition, what ensues is a three-hour orchestra of personal and professional histories, troubling tangos of guilt and pride, and a novel look at the horrors of war. “Oppenheimer” is both a searing political portrait of the United States colonial machine and a damning dossier of its titular character’s actions and interiority. 

Nolan’s filmmaking is trademarked by his penchant for grand-scale storytelling. Through each second of its extensive runtime, “Oppenheimer” delivers feats of narrative, performance, cinematography, and, ultimately, pathos. It’s a mammoth film, spanning multiple timelines and a broad array of characters. Yet there’s not a single detail within its complex and wide-ranging web that feels extraneous. And this is not only a testament to the mastery of Nolan’s writing, but also a deeply emotional consequence of how one of history’s most notorious events had no small players. 

There are shots in “Oppenheimer” that should never be forgotten. Intense portraiture backed by an award-worthy performance from Murphy is now woven into this year’s filmic memory. With various tensions building on every side of its story, Nolan doesn’t cast his lead in a definitive light, allowing the audience to engage with history and draw their own impossible conclusions. Questions of discovery and culpability collide with fierce uncertainty in “Oppenheimer,” a staggering achievement in character, context, and execution. ( Peyton Robinson )

2. “ Past Lives “

There is a knowing slipperiness to writer-director Celine Song ’s debut “Past Lives.” Though Nora ( Greta Lee ) and her family leave South Korea, moving away from her childhood best friend Hae Sung ( Teo Yoo ), this film is not about immigration. Though Nora and Hae reconnect years later via Skype, this film is not about longing. And even though Hae eventually ventures to New York City for one last chance with Nora—despite Nora being married to Arthur ( John Magaro )—this, dismayingly, is not a romance. Desire without lust; flirtation without consummation; these are the ambiguities that some have assumed are pesky glitches rather than intentional features. 

It’s why I cringe whenever I see someone refer to “Past Lives” as a love story. It’s not, and knowingly so. Because “Past Lives” works on a far trickier, subtler spectrum than many have interpreted. This is a film about the act of mourning. Its complications arise not from a character discovering the inevitable; but from them grieving the unavoidable. Within that tight boundary, imposed by Song, an aching Yoo and a tender Magaro must navigate a frightening uncertainty: What if the woman they love adores another? Lee’s Nora, of course, is wrestling with a separate, abstract struggle. She is in a different film, a different time, and unlocking a different deadlock—balancing losing what she never had and what she may never experience. “Past Lives” is Nora’s elegy for her past, present, and future. It’s a film whose poeticism is written in the finite space between acquiescence and acceptance and in the tension between a creator’s desire to depict her life’s reality and in the daydream possibility film so often demands. 1. “ Killers of the Flower Moon “

Martin Scorsese ’s monumental adaptation of David Grann ’s non-fiction bestseller contains a bounty of viewing pleasures, but in the main it is something like an anti-entertainment. For the first two hours or so of its 206-minute running time, Scorsese forges a form of slow cinema. The machinations and sins of Ernest Burkhart and William “King” Hale (Scorsese stalwarts  Leonardo DiCaprio  and  Robert De Niro ) are laid out in studious and merciless detail, and often conveyed in static-camera tableaux that evoke not just Griffith and DeMille but Straub and Huillet. The crimes against the Osage Nation members who were the rightful owners of oil-rich Oklahoma land are committed in practically plain sight, and with almost droning repetition. Why isn’t anybody doing anything? Well, yes, that’s a good question. 

Whether you think Scorsese is making you uncomfortable in order to contend with man’s inhumanity to man or to make you undergo a form of white guilt depends on where your head is at, and your response might not be the one you’d prefer. It’s all about the perspectives the filmmaker chooses. Lily Gladstone ’s performance as Mollie is a sonata of stillness and indignation—“No investigation,” a reprise repeated in voiceover early in the film, is said with her voice—and Mollie’s kiss-off of Ernest is the greatest of its kind since Alida Valli walked away from Joseph Cotten in “ The Third Man .” But while in “The Third Man,” the viewer gets to digest the look of utter disdain on Valli’s face as she walks on by, here we don’t have the option of sharing any kind of satisfaction or vindication with Mollie. Here, as all through the movie, form serves function. Because Mollie isn’t merely walking away from Ernest but from us. We are obliged to sit with Ernest in his befuddlement, and with the subsequent knowledge that this criminal will, in real life, die a free man, as will his mentor in murder. ( Glenn Kenny )
