My Teacher Maternity Leave Experience

From classroom to cribside: my teacher journey through maternity leave.

As a momma of three, I have survived three maternity leaves. Each time, I learned a little more and did things a little better. I have been fortunate that each time, I have had my kiddos right near the end of the school year, so I created maternity leave plans that took my substitute out to the end of the year. While I was able to miss most of the craziness of May in the classroom, I needed to ensure that my substitute survived the end of the school year.

Giving up control of my classroom and ensuring that my students are getting what they need is critical. I had to create a system that would help me get everything ready. Getting everything out of my brain and implementing was really overwhelming the first time. However, by this third time, I knew what needed to be done. Plus, I should add that each time, I have left on maternity leave, it was during our state-mandated testing time. If I can trust a substitute during such a critical time in my classroom, then you can totally do this! 

For each pregnancy, I create a vision for what I want my maternity leave to look like. I want to be able to just focus on my new baby and nothing else. That means that I get time off from all my other responsibilities. I do not need to worry about school at all. I give myself grace and ask others in my life to give me grace during my maternity leave. This is truly how I enjoyed my time.

I was able to walk away from my classroom confident that I was able to just focus on my baby and my family during that time. And that’s the vision that I want for you! I want you to envision what would make your maternity leave the best. Once you have that vision, let’s get ready to make that a reality. If you want step-by-step instructions, this guide will help you be prepared so you too can walk away on your last day and know it’s in good hands.

How to Prepare for Maternity Leave as a Teacher

Step #1: Understanding Your Maternity Leave Benefits

As a teacher, it is important to understand your maternity leave benefits in order to make informed decisions about your time away from the classroom. This includes understanding your legal rights, as well as any benefits that may be available to you through your employer. 

Start by reviewing your employment contract to understand your school’s policies and procedures related to maternity leave. You should also review any applicable state or federal laws related to maternity leave. 

By knowing what maternity leave benefits you have, you can make an informed decision as a family about how much time to take off. You want to consider how much paid time off you get, how much unpaid time, disability benefits, or others. One of the hard parts for me is that I have only paid time off for as many sick days and personal days as I have available. By my third kiddo, I did not have many days which is why I am so fortunate to be at the end of the school year. 

Find what is best for you and what your family can afford as you determine what benefits you have so you can have a number of days in mind. Once you have an estimated number, you can start working on your maternity leave plan.

Step #2: Communicating with School Administration and Colleagues

Another important aspect of taking maternity leave as a teacher is communicating with your school administration and colleagues. This can help to ensure that your transition is as smooth as possible and that you have the support that you need during your absence. You know your administration, so make sure you keep them informed. I always make sure to meet with my principal before I publicly announce my pregnancy. I would hate for the administration to find this information out through social media. 

By notifying your school administration and colleagues as early as possible about your anticipated leave of absence. This will help to ensure that they have enough time to make any necessary accommodations or modifications.

Next, work with your school administration to identify a qualified substitute teacher who is knowledgeable in your subject area. If you know anyone that you trust or who has been in your classroom before is a great start. For two of my maternity leaves, I had a returning education student teacher who had a college degree and became my substitute the day I went on maternity leave. If you are not fortunate enough to have a student teacher, think about those colleagues you know in your content area. Do you know any former students who are now a teacher looking for a job? How about a retired teacher you trust? While it is not your responsibility to find a substitute, your suggestion could help set up your classroom for success.

Step #3: Develop a Maternity Leave Plan for Your Classes

Now that you know your dates roughly and maybe who might be in your classroom, you are ready to start planning. Think about all the important information that you need to share with your substitute. The first document I create is my classroom procedures and expectations for each class. This plan should outline all the aspects of what makes your classroom run each day. Here are the things that I include in my document: attendance, independent reading, technology usage, learning platform procedures, grading, policies, and student notes. 

Additionally, you should also consider strategies for managing your classroom and student behavior in your absence. This could include developing a behavior management plan, providing clear expectations and routines, and ensuring that your substitute teacher has access to all the resources they need to manage your classroom effectively.

Step #4: Creating Lesson Plans and Activities for Your Substitute

One of the keys to successful maternity leave as a teacher is to ensure that your students continue to make progress in your absence. This requires careful planning and organization of lesson plans and activities for your substitute.

Start by creating a comprehensive overview of the curriculum that you will be covering while you are away. This should include a detailed outline of the topics and concepts that your students will be learning, as well as any necessary materials or resources. 

One of the best things that I do is plan out my units to end right before I leave. By ending a unit, I will have all the grading done for the last unit I teach. Also, my substitute can start on a stand-alone unit while I am gone. If you aren’t sure where to start, check out my Independent Novel Study Unit . Allowing students to read a novel as a class allows for flexibility and independent reading as a substitute. Finally, create a series of daily lesson plans and activities that align with your curriculum. Be sure to provide your substitute with detailed instructions for each lesson, including objectives, materials, and assessment strategies. I also include links to resources and even points for grading any assignments. You want to make sure that your substitute does not have any questions or concerns because you are not expected to answer your email while on leave. Making everything clear helps to ensure your peaceful maternity leave.

Step #5: Preparing Your Students for Your Absence

You’ve spent a good amount of time creating a community feeling in your classroom and now you are leaving. Your students might be sad, disappointed, anxious, or maybe a little happy. Acknowledging their feelings and preparing them for the transition is essential to setting your substitute and your students for success. 

After the fun announcement of you being pregnant, you need to set aside time to prepare your students. I had a countdown to Baby Rice in my classroom. Students could then see how close we were approaching my exit. We discussed frequently when I would be leaving and what that would look like for them. 

We held multiple conversations where students shared their fears and concerns. We also brainstormed as a class what they could do to make the substitute feel more welcome. We also spent time reviewing my policies and expectations as a reminder to my students of what I want from them while I was gone. 

I was fortunate that my district provided two transition days where my substitute came into my classroom while I was still there. I was able to give her a rundown of what my classroom looks like each day. The students were able to meet her and get to learn more about her while I was still there. Plus, after those two days, we as a class had a conversation about what they wanted my substitute to know about them. Don’t be afraid to ask for at least one transitional day to help get your students and your substitute on the same page. 

Finally, be honest and open with your students about your maternity leave. Explain to them the unknowns that could occur and the things that they can control. Encourage them that this change is something that they can do, and that change can be good. Let your students know that you are already proud of them and they are helping you out by taking the new substitute under their wing. Make them feel like they have some control in the situation and they will impress you.

Step #6: Enjoy Your Time Off with the Baby

Perhaps the best part is the start of maternity leave. If you can, select your last day (I know babies come when they want to). This date gives you and your students an end date to help prepare everyone. At the end of the day, set your automatic reply on your email, take home your personal items, say farewell to your classroom, and shut that door. Momma, you are now ready to focus solely on that beautiful baby. 

Remember that vision that you created for yourself. Even if things don’t go to plan and some parts are harder than you expected, your focus is on the baby. Maternity leave is all about you! The biggest thing to remember for this time is that you are not required to do anything related to school during this time. Set that boundary for yourself and make it clear to your administration, your colleagues, and your substitute. Do not look at your school email and certainly do not feel obligated to answer any communication with your school. Gently remind them that you are on maternity leave and trying to focus on keeping a tiny human alive. 

Enjoy your time off with your baby and let the rest go!

Step #7: Returning to Work: Transitioning Back into the Classroom

As your maternity leave comes to an end, it is important to prepare for your transition back into the classroom. This can help to ensure that you are able to resume your teaching duties with confidence and ease. I recommend starting this transition  the week before you return. 

Start by communicating with your school administration and colleagues about your return to work. This should include a detailed plan for transitioning back into your teaching duties, as well as any necessary accommodations or modifications. Now is the time to check your email and sort through the tasks that you need to complete. 

Next, take time to review your curriculum and lesson plans to ensure that you are prepared to resume teaching. Consider meeting with your substitute teacher to discuss any changes or updates that may have occurred during your absence.

Finally, be sure to take care of yourself during this transition period. Remember that it may take some time to adjust to your new roles as both a mother and a teacher, and that it’s okay to ask for help and support as needed.

You may have already talked to the folks in the main office or the teacher’s union, or maybe you haven’t, and you’re wondering how much maternity leave teachers get or if you even qualify for time off. The good news: The US  Family Medical Leave Act is federal, and it guarantees all new parents (moms or dads) 12 weeks of time off after the birth or adoption of a new baby.

There are some states that require employers to give even more time off to new parents. For example, California law states that private employers with 50 employees or more and all public sector employers must provide up to 12 weeks unpaid family leave plus 4 months of maternity disability leave. That works out to a total of 28 weeks of parental leave per year.

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., the law protects employees who take up to 16 weeks of unpaid leave during a 24-month period.

Is Teacher Maternity Leave Paid?

Now for the not-so-good news: The federal law does not require employers to pay their employees during those 12 weeks, and that includes teacher maternity leave pay. The law just stipulates that employers have to allow the time off, and they can’t fire them for taking a maternity leave.

With no federal mandate, paid maternity leave and paternity leave are both up to your local laws and individual school district. Some districts do offer paid time off for new parents , while in others, district contracts allow teachers to use their accrued sick leave to ensure they can still get a paycheck during time out of the classroom with a new baby.

Again, you’ll want to check out the laws for your state, as they may be on your side. As of 2024, 13 states and the District of Columbia have enacted mandatory paid family leave policies. Those states include:

  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island

Just how much teachers can be paid during a maternity leave or a paternity leave varies from state to state. California teachers, for example, are eligible for coverage from the California Paid Family Leave insurance program, which provides up to eight weeks of paid leave to care for a seriously ill child, spouse, parent, or registered domestic partner or to bond with a new child. You won’t get your full salary — the benefit works out to about 55 percent of your weekly wage — but it’s certainly better than no pay at all!

Once you’ve determined how much time you’ll be able to take off, it’s time to get planning.

Teacher Maternity Leave Planning Guide

First trimester teacher maternity leave checklist.

The first trimester is defined as conception to 12 weeks.

  • Start a paper or electronic file for all of the emails, documents and forms you’ll receive about your pregnancy or adoption. There is a lot of paperwork coming your way!
  • Research your rights for maternity leave (talk to your union rep).
  • If you have a partner, look into what they might be able to do for leave also.
  • Think about when you’d ideally like to finish work. It’s great to have a tentative end date in mind when you’re planning, and this can definitely be adjusted.
  • Think about when you’d like to inform your principal that you’re expecting. You are not obligated to disclose your pregnancy in the early stages, but you will eventually need to have the conversation so they can hire a leave replacement teacher.
  • Pop lots of healthy, high-protein snacks in your desk drawer.
  • Look into childcare options in your area if you expect to need it, as some areas have very high demand and long waitlists.
  • Set up or update your substitute teacher folder to prepare for absences for appointments during the pregnancy.

Second Trimester Teacher Maternity Leave Checklist

The second trimester is from weeks 13-27.

  • Organize assessment and grading data. Keep everything up to date in case you need to make a swift exit.
  • Enjoy announcing your pregnancy to your students and their families.
  • Tidy up your classroom and desk area, and begin taking home or storing personal items.
  • Do some serious classroom decluttering — recycle old paper and dispose of resources and equipment that are no longer useful and your long-term sub won’t need.
  • Check in with your teaching team or teaching partner about your plans.
  • Check in with specialist teachers and learning support. Schedule meetings to discuss students with IEPs and other needs before you go.

Third Trimester Teacher Maternity Leave Checklist

The third trimester is from weeks 28-40.

  • If you know who will be replacing you, make contact and arrange a “handover” meeting.
  • If your long-term sub is a certified teacher, check with admin to see how detailed your lesson plans need to be. Some admins want full lesson plans for the entire time, while some are okay with a general outline for the sub to follow.  If needed, create lesson plans for your leave replacement.
  • Complete all of your paperwork for your administrator to lodge on your behalf.
  • Catch up on grading, and check with admin about grading while you are on parental leave. Most subs do not get access to grading systems, so they won’t be able to enter grades. You may be asked to do it, but remember, you’re on leave! You’re not supposed to work (and doing so may put any pay in jeopardy). You may need to ask a teacher to input the grades while you are out.

  • Clear off your work laptop if you will have to hand it in to IT.
  • Choose a last day (if possible), and let your colleagues know when this is.
  • Let your students know when you’re planning to finish work, and remind them as the time approaches.
  • Send an email to parents and guardians letting them know you’re finishing up, and (if known), include an introduction and picture of the new classroom teacher.
  • Set up an automated reply from your work email to begin the day you start your family leave.
  • If your classroom has a fridge, clear it out.
  • Pack up and take home all of your personal belongings from your classroom and common areas.
  • Set up a teacher account for your sub and provide access to student messaging systems (ClassDojo, Remind, etc.) Once you’re out on leave, turn off your notifications.

And that’s it! Feel free to copy and paste this list of teacher-specific preparations for maternity leave into your planner or spreadsheet. You can add it to your existing (non-teacher) checklist or keep this one separate.

Maybe you’re a successful businesswoman, rising to new heights in your career. Or maybe you’re a young professional, just starting to get a feel for your workplace environment. Wherever you are on your professional journey, pregnancy might seem like a roadblock to your career. How do you handle your pregnancy and childbirth in a professional way without losing the progress you’ve made?

If telling your boss you’re pregnant in person isn’t your style, the next best alternative is to write a maternity leave request letter.

Getting this letter to your boss in a timely manner is an effective way to communicate your commitment to the company, your plans for leave, and your hopes for the future.

It’s also a great idea to attach your maternity leave plan to your request letter, so you look super prepared and dedicated to your company.

Together we will walk through how to write a stellar maternity leave request letter that shows your devotion to your company and passion for your career.

When you’re writing your maternity leave request letter, there is some essential information you’ll want to include. This will allow your boss to have the details of your maternity leave clearly laid out and easily accessible. A strong maternity leave letter includes:

  • Your name, title, and employee number if applicable. In big companies, your boss might need a reminder of who you are or which department you work for. Adding these details helps keep things professional.
  • Your due date and how many weeks of leave you’re planning to use. It can also be helpful to schedule your last day in the office a week or two before you’re due so your office can better plan for your absence. Babies come when they want to, but scheduling your last day can give you some peace of mind.
  • The name of a trusted colleague or teammate who will be handling your duties and responsibilities. If you trained someone to help while you’re gone, be sure to mention it in your maternity leave request letter!
  • Clear boundaries for maternity leave . Are you ok receiving work emails while on leave? What about phone calls? Letting your boss know what you are or aren’t comfortable with in writing can help with possible disputes in the future.
  • Excitement about returning to work. Your employer wants to know that they aren’t going to lose a valuable employee. Showing that you are excited about coming back to work gives your boss an extra boost of confidence about your commitment to the company.

Helpful tip: Attach your complete maternity leave plan to the letter for bonus points with your company!

After you’ve included these important details, submit your request letter as soon as possible. If your leave falls under FMLA guidelines, you will need to provide your employer at least 30 days notice. However, more notice is always better, since this will give your office time to prepare. Once you’re in a pregnancy safe zone (generally after 12-15 weeks), anytime is a good time to bring up maternity leave with your boss!

By highlighting a clear plan and timeline for your maternity leave, you are assuring your boss that you are committed to your company and willing to do everything you can to make your time away as smooth as possible.

Every office is different, so it’s important to know the environment of your workplace. Some offices have employee handbooks that might give you insight into the HR policies in place for maternity leave. Company culture also plays a huge part in what type of maternity leave request letter you should write to your employer.

Below I have included three maternity leave request prompts that vary in formality. Feel free to pick one that fits your company best and adapt it for your needs.

If you work for a small company where you know your boss well, you can write a more casual maternity leave letter. You can include less information since your boss likely knows you better. An easy way to send this is via email. Be sure to cc your HR representative on your email to your boss.

Subject: Maternity Leave Request

Dear Mr./Mrs. [Recipient’s Name],

As you know, I am now approaching the end of my pregnancy. I am due [due date] and plan to start my maternity leave on [starting date] and return to the office by [tentative joining date]. Barring any unforeseen issues regarding my pregnancy and delivery, I expect to be back to work at my previous position and workload.

I have been working closely with [colleagues name] and they are prepared to handle my responsibilities while I am away.

If my plans change for any reason, I will let you know as soon as possible. Thank you for allowing me this time to spend with my newborn.

If you work for a larger company and are less comfortable having a casual conversation with your boss, you will likely want to print out a physical letter to hand to your boss and HR director. Including more information can help you feel confident asking for maternity leave.

My due date is [date] and I plan to continue working until [date or suggest working from home until your due date or delivery]. I plan to take [number] weeks of maternity leave. I don't expect to have any problem returning to my current position and delivering the same quality of work I do now.

While I'm on leave I suggest [name] be in charge of [specific parts of your job]. If you have any concerns, please let me know so we can address them.

While I'm on maternity leave, I am happy to reply to emails in my available free time, however I ask that phone calls please be avoided. Please let me know if there are any forms you require from me before I go on maternity leave. Thank you for allowing me to take this time to physically recover and care for my new baby.

If you work for a large company with many supervisors, it can be tricky to know the correct way to write a maternity leave request letter. Your corporation will likely have a much clearer guideline for maternity leave than smaller companies. Be sure to let your boss know who you are and that you are aware of your allowed leave. This is also a good letter to print out and hand deliver.

The purpose of this letter is to apply for maternity leave as mentioned in our organization’s policy. I would like to use my maternity leave for a period of [number of weeks] weeks, beginning [start date] with my return to the office being [end date]. I hope that this request will be approved in a timely manner.

During my time away, I have asked [colleague’s name] to assist with handling my responsibilities and duties. In the case of an unmanageable emergency, please contact me at [contact number].

If my plans change, or unforeseeable circumstances arise, I will be sure to let you know. Please let me know of any information or forms, such as a doctor's note, that you will require from me before or during my maternity leave. I look forward to working with you to ensure a smooth transition to maternity leave and back to work.

7 Tips to Prep for a Blissful Maternity Leave for Teachers

I felt compelled to write this blog post on maternity leave for teachers for all you mamas, soon-to-be mamas, or anyone with hopes to start a future family of their own. Also, I wanted to shout out the mamas trying to get pregnant without success and who’ve struggled with infertility. We see you, and we stand with you. In this post, I want to share a little bit about my first fully planned maternity leave with my fourth child and how I’ve never taken one before because I was a slave to my job.

I don’t want this to be you. 

I want to share what I’ve learned after three failed teacher maternity leaves and what I did this time to make it better. Plus, teacher maternity leave is significantly different than most jobs because it requires a lot of work and preparation. It’s not as easy as saying, “Okay guys, see y’all in 6-8 weeks, hope it works out”. You’ve got an entire room of students, other teachers, parents, administrators, and more wondering how long is maternity leave for teachers or is she going to write a teacher maternity leave letter. So I wanted to put everything in order for you today and give you a teacher maternity leave checklist to get started.

My First Maternity Leave as a Teacher

Three days – 3 d.a.y.s..

– that’s how long I took for maternity leave with my firstborn and second-born baby boys. I entered into my junior and senior year of college nine months pregnant.  I was told when I enrolled that we could only miss one day each semester because we were in a cohort through Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW). I used to not share where I went to school, but looking back, I think it’s important to know the strict and ridiculous guidelines we had. Because I’m from a tiny rural community, four colleges are a pretty good driving distance away. If I wanted to get an education degree from GSW, it would have been nearly a 3-hour drive one way each day. 

That year, GSW decided to do a cohort through Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), so the professors would drive Monday through Thursday and teach us all day. Literally, all day – sometimes from 8 am to 6 pm and other days from 9 am to 4 pm. ABAC was about 45 minutes from my home, so in August 2009, I drove to my first day of school at nine months pregnant. I have this thing when I say I’m going to do something and nobody thinks I can. I tell them, “Watch this.” Even though no one except my mama and husband believed I could manage a newborn and my coursework, I decided to go all in.

Going All-In Even When It Meant Just Three Days of Leave

My son was born on a Friday, and I was told I had to go to a mandatory class on Monday for a Code of Ethics training. If I did not attend, I would be kicked out of the program. And, to make matters worse, I couldn’t bring my baby. They told me, “You cannot bring your baby.”  I barely could walk at that point, and the thought of sitting at a desk made me cry. So I stood for three hours in the back of a huge auditorium as my mom sat in my car with pumped breast milk feeding my 3-day-old baby. 

At the end of the training, one of the professors walked up to me and said, “Why are you here? You didn’t have to come.” 

I broke into tears. “Didn’t have to come? You all told me if I didn’t come, I couldn’t be in the program any longer.” 

We continued making the drive where my mom would sit in the car, and I’d breastfeed during my breaks. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. When he was three weeks old, my father was in a nearly fatal car accident where my mom could no longer watch after my baby because she had to take care of my daddy.

At four weeks old, my son had to start daycare.

Daycare that was paid for by student loans. 

Round Two of Less-Than-Ideal Teacher Maternity Leave

Then, much to my surprise, one of the hardest days I can ever remember happened when my son was three months old. I found out I was pregnant again. Make no mistake, I love my children, and I’ve been so blessed to have kids , but being 23 years old and broke and finding out you’re pregnant with another child while you’re going to college isn’t something you can really mentally prepare for.

My senior year of college was like Deja Vu when I walked in for orientation at nine months pregnant. My sons are 12 months and 11 days apart. I went into labor early with my second son on a Sunday and went to school on a Thursday. This time they let me miss three days (Ha! Thanks for that GSW), and we did the vicious cycle all over again. Thank God for my sweet mama.

Don’t Do What I Did

I tell you this story to say, I don’t want you to do what I did. I want you to be prepared, I want you to be ready, and I want you to enjoy your babies and maternity leave as a teacher because I didn’t get that with my first two. So when I found out at 30 that I was pregnant again, I was elated. God had given us another chance (although we tried for years and years to get pregnant again) to enjoy a baby. That baby boy has been one of the greatest gifts. 

But here’s the thing. I launched my first course two months before our last boy was born. And although I said I was on maternity leave, I wasn’t. I was working around the clock with my baby on my lap on my laptop to help students because I was a one-woman show. I’m thankful that I don’t have to do that this time.

How to Navigate Maternity Leave for Teachers

I vowed with this baby girl to make sure my hiney sat in that rocking chair for a million miles so that I could enjoy every single second. I want to enjoy and soak up every second of those newborn snuggles! Here’s what we did to prepare for my maternity leave as a teacher.

Organize What Needs to Be Done Before You Go on Maternity Leave for a Teacher

Don’t procrastinate or act like you aren’t pregnant and go on with live business as usual as your teacher maternity leave approaches. Hello, that’s exactly what I used to do. I used to legit act like I didn’t know there was an ending here. Most of us are pretty close to our due dates when we deliver, so we all are very aware of when this will happen, and yet, it tends to sneak up on us if we aren’t careful.

So, in the beginning, once the sickness leaves and you start to get a little energy back, organize what needs to be done for your teacher maternity leave. Chunk it into categories by priority. Ask yourself what the most important thing you need to do is so you can forget about school or your side hustle while you are drowning in sweet baby kisses and not moving your butt from a rocking chair.

Although I don’t need extra motivation, it’s important to remember this while you're preparing for maternity leave for teachers: every second of work you do to prep for this baby means every second you gain time and freedom once they arrive. I wrote this blog post to go live 2 months before it was time.

I didn’t want to do it, but my blog posts and podcast episodes were preloaded through the end of my pregnancy so that I could have two full months of my business on autopilot and my first baby girl and last baby in my arms . When I don’t feel like it, I just close my eyes, think of how long is teacher maternity leave, and say, “This is for you, baby girl. It will all be worth it.” 

Now, you could look at that and say, “Why don’t you just not work at all and not have anything preloaded for your business and just take time off?” 

And to that, I say, well done. If that’s your personality, please do that! But it just isn’t mine. I want to be still teaching and serving my community even if I’m on vacation.

Make a Preparation Plan

Once you’ve organized what needs to be done, it’s time to make a plan. Whip out that calendar or calendars, and let’s get busy. I use a digital calendar, Google Calendar, and a paper planner. The most important thing for my life I ever did was take two weeks to dig down deep and understand Google Calendars. Now, I have color-coordinated calendars based on children, and activities for work, life, time off, and more. If my kids say, “Hey mama, is my game on field five tonight? Are we the home or visitors?” I can easily say, while I’m driving, just check the calendar. However, now they don’t even have to ask. They grab my phone, open up Google Calendar, and know their color so they can see all the details of baseball games, field trips, days off from school, summer camps, and more. 

I want you to spend some time making a plan for your maternity leave like that – a runway to the baby’s arrival. This should be where you can see everything leading up to your time off for teacher maternity leave at a glance, but in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming because there’s so much to do and so little time. Each day turns into a stepping stone for success. Our dogs get groomed once a month, and they are orange on the calendar, I share every activity with my husband, and he checks yes if he takes the responsibility (which at nine months pregnant is almost everything, to be honest). That way, I don’t even have to say, “Hey baby, are you taking the dogs, or am I?”

It may sound over the top, but it allows us to live a life in love rather than stress about the daily to-dos. As a teacher, your color-coordinated calendar for teacher maternity leave could look something like this:

I’m in the thick of podcast writing and recording with only three left! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! And once it’s done, I don’t think about it again until four months from now! 

Yeehaw! That’s what I want for you, your classroom, and your business. Write all of your weekly emails to your teacher list and schedule them to send each week while you’re on maternity leave. Write blog posts to go live throughout your time away. Automate your Facebook posts to go out while you’re doing all of the new mom things. And the same goes for your classroom. I want you to miss your students, but I don’t want you to have to check an email while you’re gone if you don’t want to. Speaking of email and setting boundaries, let’s jump to our next one.

Set New Boundaries Right When You Find Out You’re Pregnant

Read that again. I think some people confuse setting boundaries with being rude or inconsiderate, and I completely disagree. I put my phone away from 6 pm to 6 am every night, and those first few weeks were rough. I would have 45 new text messages each morning I had to sift through and answer, but now – I have zero or just a couple. Why? Because people know when they can reach me. If my mama needs me, she calls my house phone. Setting that boundary has been so vital to my family. Losing 43 text messages a day gave me hours of endless conversations with my kids that I’ll never get back. 

What boundaries can you start implementing now, so it won’t be such a shock when your baby arrives? First, start answering emails during one designated time. I check my email once a day. That’s it. Once a day, and I’m never in there longer than 20 minutes unless we are in our busy season. I never check it on the weekends, and sometimes I miss a day because we have a 48-hour return policy. Set up an auto-responder on your email that explains your boundaries and ways they can reach out to someone if it’s an emergency. We often don’t say anything and go months or years being uncomfortable inside when all we had to do was push through 15 minutes of awkwardness. If I ever say, “Ugh, I don’t want to do it or call them or tell them that because I feel bad,” I immediately pick up the phone and call instantly without second-guessing. If I don’t, I won’t sleep for weeks until I finally work up the courage to go for it.

Bake in Time to Rest as You Prepare for and Go On Maternity Leave for Teachers

You never know when the waves of exhaustion are going to hit you. One week you’re at CrossFit four days in a row, and the next, you are drooling on your teacher’s desk during your lunch period because you can’t keep your eyes open. You never know when your energy will come and go, so bake in time to rest and give yourself some grace . The template above will serve great for those who have a specified amount of days allotted to them as maternity leave. However, not every employer has that luxury. Some depend on flexibility and good understanding between all in the work environment.

The template above is good for a person who has a purely official relationship with his boss. The letter is merely a courtesy; the superior has no authority to refuse. As mentioned in the introduction, it is highly unlikely that a maternity leave application will be refused. This is because the employer or superior has already seen your protruding tummy, and so knows what to expect. The sample maternity leave application is almost romantic; the very basis of the application is the good, friendly rapport between the employee and boss. This is common in small businesses where everything is on a first name basis. However, in the template below, the writer does not even know who she is writing to. This happens in very big offices, or government establishments.

In the template above, the writer may be a senior member of staff in the organization, probably having an office junior or assistant working with her. In any case she has the power to assign a person to cover for her while she is away. This makes life a lot easier for the person in charge.

In the template below, it is assumed that she does not have that power. The good rapport with the superior officer will nevertheless produce the desired results, even if the work must suffer for some time.

What To Remember When Applying For Maternity Leave

A maternity leave request is mostly a complementary gesture to your superiors. In most well organized establishments it is clearly spelt out in the employment contract, and so it is a right that cannot be denied.

In most organizations, a maternity leave request simply goes into the record. It may be used for future reference purposes, and to ensure reciprocity which is an important part of ensuring a cordial work atmosphere.

Your colleagues and employer has already seen that you are pregnant, and will be unavailable for some time. Writing to request a leave of absence shows professionalism and respect.

Even small businesses will be happy to give time off; however this is greatly helped when you have a good working relationship with your employer and colleagues.

Some times when a person is a team leader or heads a section of an office you have the knowledge of who can best fill your shoes in your absence. Taking the step to train the person ahead shows that you are proactive, and that you have the best interest of the office at heart.

However, sometimes it is not your position to select the best person to fill in your shoes. Sometimes capacity is not the only quality that your superior is looking for; it may be honesty, transparency, or flexibility. Sometimes, your boss may even feel insulted when you assign your duties to someone else without his consent. Therefore, it may be best to consult your boss first before making such a step. Another way to show you have the best interest of the organization at heart is to volunteer to assist the office via phone if necessary. This is especially so when you hold a sensitive position in the establishment.

Teachers Are Pushing for Paid Parental Leave. How It’s Going

Kathryn Vaughn has dedicated her career to teaching other people’s children. When it came time to have her own children, though, she experienced what felt like a significant lack of support.

After years of unexplained infertility, Vaughn and her husband were thrilled to learn they were expecting their first child, due September 2021. But Vaughn soon turned her attention to the practical business of figuring out how much time she could afford to stay home with her newborn.

Like teachers across the country, Vaughn, an elementary art teacher for the Tipton County Schools in Brighton, Tenn., received no paid maternity leave. She had to use her accrued sick days, which she began “hoarding,” sometimes forfeiting prenatal health care visits to maximize time at home with her newborn after the birth. Ultimately, Vaughn had just a 13-day maternity leave before returning to work.

“I returned to work before my body was able to heal,” she said. “It was pretty awful.”

The following summer, Vaughn became pregnant again. On the first day of the new school year, she miscarried. But with less than two weeks of paid time off (between sick and personal days), she chose to work through her loss . She and her husband planned to try to get pregnant again right away, and she wanted to reserve those days for another potential maternity leave.

Vaughn’s experience is not unique. Only a fraction of the nation’s public school teachers receive paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child. A 2022 National Council on Teacher Quality analysis of 148 large districts across the nation in 2022 found that just 18 percent provided full or partially paid parental leave of some kind.

Heather Peske, NCTQ’s president, said the council’s analysis found few trends among the types of districts that offer paid parental leave. “We did not see patterns. Just lots of variation,” she said. “Overall, not enough districts are offering paid family leave.”

That is changing, albeit slowly. Since NCTQ’s 2022 analysis, the push for paid parental leave has gained traction around the country. In the spring of 2023, for instance, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and South Carolina enacted new laws offering some form of paid maternity leave for educators.

This year, activity on the paid parental leave front continues, with uneven results.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, signed a bill in April doubling paid parental leave for public school employees from three to six weeks.

Meanwhile, in May, a measure in Alabama that would have required local boards of education to provide eight weeks of paid parental leave for birth, adoption, miscarriage, or stillbirth passed overwhelmingly in the state senate, before being blocked by the senate president, who cited budget concerns.

The move incensed the bill’s sponsor, state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures, a Democrat, who told legislators: “None of you are pregnant, ever will be pregnant, nor will have a baby. You have no idea what it’s like; not only the physical things we have to go through, but the mental and emotional things we have to go through.”

Following is a look at who has championed some of the recent efforts to enact paid parental leave, the obstacles that prevent or slow implementation, and what advocates see as the ramifications of failing to provide paid parental leave to educators.

Who’s championing paid parental leave

Many of the educators who have pushed for paid parental leave in their state or district have been motivated by their or their colleagues’ personal experience.

Vaughn began advocating for legislative change in Tennessee in the throes of teaching full time, caring for her young son, and reeling from a miscarriage. She took to social media; wrote an impact statement about working through the loss of a pregnancy on behalf of A Better Balance , a national nonprofit with an office in Nashville, Tenn., that advocates for family-friendly reforms; and spoke directly to state politicians about the issue.

Ultimately, Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, signed into law last July the Teacher Parental Leave Act , which provides eligible public school educators and administrators six weeks of paid parental leave within a year of a birth, adoption, or stillbirth.

Former New York City public school high school math teacher John Troutman McCrann, who now works full-time for the United Federation of Teachers, advocated along with other colleagues for paid parental leave at the nation’s largest school district.

The initiative gained traction when nearly 85,000 teachers and other supporters signed a petition calling for the city’s teachers’ union to fight for paid parental leave. From there, formal advocacy efforts by the United Federation of Teachers led to a June 2018 agreement with the city that guaranteed educators six weeks of paid time off for the birth, adoption, or fostering of a child.

Last year, the UFT negotiated a more generous paid parental leave policy for New York City public school teachers, McCrann said. Now, if two parents in the same household are employed by the city’s department of education and meet eligibility requirements, they can each take six weeks paid parental leave, as opposed to sharing the allotted six weeks between the two of them.

McCrann recalled how he started advocating for paid parental leave after becoming aware of the challenges his colleagues experienced as they balanced caring for newborns, returning to work, and affording their new circumstances. “It was me and a bunch of women who were pregnant [who initially advocated for a policy],” McCrann said. “At the time, my wife and I were thinking about [having] kids.”

While teachers’ unions frequently drive advocacy for parental leave policies, McCrann said that’s not always the case. “A school board could just do the right thing,” he said, pointing out their power to initiate parental leave policies on their own.

The cost of providing paid parental leave

Cost rises to the forefront of any negotiation that involves paid leave, McCrann said. It also tends to be the deciding factor when lawmakers vote against providing paid parental leave, like in Alabama this year.

In California, efforts to provide teachers with paid leave have stalled over the past several years, with Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, citing the financial burden on school districts as the stumbling block.

“Providing every California worker with paid family leave is a noble goal and a priority for my administration,” Newsom said when vetoing legislation that would have provided educators with paid parental leave in 2019. “However, this bill will likely result in annual costs of tens of millions of dollars that should be considered as part of the annual budget process and as part of local collective bargaining.”

State legislators have introduced a similar measure this year. Currently, California Assembly Bill 2901 , which would provide educators with 14 weeks of paid disability and parental leave, is pending in the state senate’s education committee.

McCrann argues that the cost of paying teachers when they’re on leave with a new child might be overestimated. “School boards are going to try to say: ‘We can’t afford to hire a new teacher,’” he said. “But by me taking leave as a teacher, that doesn’t cost [the school system] double, because substitute teachers get paid less.”

And paid leave can help improve teacher retention and morale, experts say.

“If teachers are not given access to paid family leave, the choices they have are pretty slim,” NCTQ’s Peske said. They can hoard their sick days, try to have a child in the summer, take unpaid leave, go back to work before they’re emotionally or physically ready, or decide that they don’t want to return to teaching after having a child, she notes. None of these are necessarily attractive options for expectant parents or the school system where they work.

“Without acknowledging or implementing family-supportive policies, we do stand to lose people who are strong teachers,” Peske said.

At least one estimate places the total costs to replace a teacher between $9,000 and $21,000.

Unquantifiable costs of providing paid parental leave—or not—are also at stake.

Peske notes several proven positive health outcomes to all family members when parents receive sufficient time to care for children in the early stages of their lives. Evidence links paid leave to improved parental and infant health and well-being, improved long-term father-child relationships, and even lower divorce rates.

“The ability that I had to be at home with my son for six weeks was transformative for our relationship. And that matters to the public school system,” McCrann said. “There must be a way to factor that cost in.”

Vaughn, who is expecting another child in September, will have fewer tough choices to make this time around. “I feel so much better knowing I have this paid leave,” she said. “I feel more free to go to doctors appointments. Before I would try to skip them.”
