OxThesis is a LaTeX template for an Oxford University thesis, originally published on the Oxford Echoes blog .
Feel free to submit issues or push requests here, or comments on the blog post there. And of course, happy thesis-writing!
When writing my thesis in 2014, I was lucky enough to find a template that Sam Evans adapted for social sciences use based on the original maths template by Keith Gillow . I wound up making my own modifications, and re-packaged the template for posterity. This template is distributed under an MIT License with each of their permissions. It's also worth pointing out that Danny Price has developed a LyX template based on the maths template as well.
Some of the features of OxThesis are:
Fantastic chapter pages. The template retains Sam Evans’s use of the quotchap and minitoc packages to (optionally) include an epigraph and brief table of contents at the beginning of each chapter. I found this a great way to inject a bit of personality into the thesis (via the epigraph) and ensure that my reader wasn’t getting lost (table of contents). My modifications cleaned up some of the spacing, ensuring single-spaced tables and slightly more compact chapter headings.
Table of Contents refinements. Careful attention was paid to spacing and page headings in the table of contents as well as other heading sections. This can get tricky in documents using lots of packages. This template also inserts an “Appendices” page (and ToC entry) between chapters and appendices.
Table of abbreviations. Many science and engineering theses use lots of abbreviations. Humanities and social sciences theses often need glossaries. While there are some dedicated LaTeX classes that meet these needs in complex cases, I decided to create a simple list environment to handle the routine cases.
Highlighted corrections. Most Oxford theses go through a round of corrections, as time-honored a tradition as the viva itself. Minor corrections generally just involve sending a PDF of your revised thesis to your internal examiner. (Major corrections often require a more exacting process.) This class allows you to designate text (or figures, etc) as a correction. You can then toggle between generating a document in which these corrections are highlighted in blue (ideal for sending to your examiner for a quick read-through) and just printing them without any adornment (for generating your final copy).
Page layout, draft, and spacing options. In a few keystrokes, you can switch between a double-spaced, single-sided, binding-margin document (ideal for submission), a 1.5-spaced, double-sided document (for your parents’ copy), or a version with equal left and right margins (for submitting as a PDF). An optional draft notice (with date) can be included in the footer — just remember to turn it off before submitting!
Master’s thesis title page. Some masters’ degrees require title pages with a candidate number and word count rather than a name and college, to ensure anonymity for the examinees. They also require a statement of authenticity / originality on the title page. This template has a quick option to switch to this master’s submission format. And, just as importantly, it can be turned off when you want to print a version for yourself.
Full details with pictures can still be found at the Oxford Echoes blog post . Feel free to submit push requests or issues.

Searchable abstracts of theses & dissertations from around the world are available via ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global - many are available for full text download.
The EThoS service from the British Library contains information about UK doctoral theses and there is increasing availability of full-text downloads, which are available once a library or individual has paid for digitisation.
Oxford University theses are not available in full online format via EThos but some are available in ORA (the Oxford Research Archive) - these will show in your SOLO search results, you do not need to search ORA separately.
When consulting an Oxford thesis or dissertation recognise that the copyright of the thesis rests with the author and that no quotation from it or information derived from it may be published without the prior consent of the author.
A thesis or dissertation is an unpublished work therefore no copyright exceptions apply which let you copy. However, for the MSc dissertations held in the Education Library, the authors have agreed to permit limited copying of their thesis by individuals (no more than 5% or one chapter) for personal research use.
Dphil theses.
Copying from an Oxford thesis, even of a single page, may require the author's written permission. For more information about the copyright of Oxford theses and how to obtain copies of or from an Oxford thesis please follow the links or ask us .
Limited copying is possible (no more than 5% or one chapter) for personal research use. No quotation or information derived from an MSc dissertation may be published without the written consent of the author of the dissertation. The Higher Degrees office may be able to help you wish to contact an author, but usually you can find possible contact details via an internet search.
To find theses and dissertations in oxford.
On SOLO - just add the word thesis to your searches. For instance, if you search for oxford thesis education and then use the Resource Type filter to choose Theses (Oxford) , you will get a large selection of theses & dissertations on educational topics. The results will include both Masters dissertations and Doctoral theses and come from various departments including the Department of Education.
If you add "department of education*" then the search will bring back theses & dissertations produced in the Department of Education prior to 2020. The asterisk at the end of 'education*' ensures the results will include older theses dissertations from when the Department was called Educational Studies. NB. More recent dissertations are not tagged with information about the Department
You could try adding particular research methods, but be aware that most older dissertations have not been catalogued with any information about research methods used.
A growing number of Oxford theses & dissertations are available online. These will be included in the results of your SOLO searches once the thesis or dissertation has been deposited into ORA . You can also search ORA directly using course codes, e.g. ALSLA, CIE2021 etc.
On the open shelves in the Education Library you will find older printed copies of MSc Education, ALSLA and ALLT dissertations. Some years we were able to indicate which dissertations which received distinctions by marking these with a red dot on the spine. Please note that very few dissertations are available from 2020 as the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic meant the requirement for students to submit a hard copy was waived (and only a few students chose to submit online copies to the library). Since 2021 dissertations are primarily submitted online with optional donation of a hard copy to the library shelves. Submission is voluntary so the library does not have every dissertation submitted each year.
MSc dissertations are shelved on the far wall of the Front Reading Room. These are for consultation in the library only and cannot be borrowed.
MSc dissertations are grouped first by course, e.g. ALSLA, Higher Education, and within each course are arranged alphabetically by author’s surname.
To search for MSc dissertations on SOLO type: "department of education*" thesis M.Sc. using the Oxford Collections search filter. Most of the results will be our dissertations.
You could also include author surnames or keywords in your search.
A list of the titles, authors and supervisors of the more recent Department of Education MSc Education and ALSLA dissertations is available from this page. A printed list is also available within the library.
Older MSc dissertations are stored offsite in the Collections Storage Facility. They can be requested to the Education Library (or any other Bodleian Library) and consulted there (not borrowed).
MSc Learning & Teaching (MLT), MSc Teacher Education (MTed), MSc Educational Assessment (MEA) and MSc Medical Education (MedEd) students are asked to submit an online copy of their dissertation. Exemplar dissertations are chosen to be made available online via ORA - simply type the course code, e.g. MLT
Please note that very few dissertations are available from 2020.
DPhil theses are stored offsite in the Collections Storage Facility. They can be requested to the Weston Library and consulted there (not borrowed).
To search for departmental DPhil theses on SOLO type: "department of education*" thesis D Phil using the Oxford Collections search filter.
Note that it is important to include a space between the 'D' and the 'Phil'. You could also include author surnames or keywords in your search.
In recent years DPhil candidates have been required to deposit an online copy of their thesis with ORA. These can be found via SOLO . Occasionally a thesis may be embargoed so that the full text is not available for a few years.
A list of the titles, authors and supervisors of the more recent Department of Education DPhil theses is available from this page. A printed list is also available within the library.
Supervisors in the Department have also made a short list of ‘recommended theses’ that students can draw on for inspiration about layout, format and more substantive issues. The list includes some DPhil and MSc theses with the reason for recommendation, e.g. substantive, methodological, well written etc.

Introduction, case report, author contributions, conflict of interest statement, data availability, ethics approval and consent to participate, role of three-dimensional printing and laser scanning in aesthetic restoration of parry romberg’s disease using de-epithelialized anterolateral thigh flap: a case report.
Anupama Kumari, Veena Singh, Ansarul Haq, Sarsij Sharma, Niraj Bhalara, Role of three-dimensional printing and laser scanning in aesthetic restoration of Parry Romberg’s disease using de-epithelialized anterolateral thigh flap: a case report, Journal of Surgical Case Reports , Volume 2024, Issue 8, August 2024, rjae469, https://doi.org/10.1093/jscr/rjae469
Parry Romberg syndrome also known as progressive hemifacial atrophy is an uncommon degenerative condition, characterized by unilateral, slow, and progressive atrophy of face. Patient presents with loss of facial symmetry and neurological manifestations. After the degenerative process settles, reconstructive surgeries are performed to address facial asymmetry. For accurate assessment of volume deficit, laser scanning and three- dimensional printing can be used which offers the advantage of precise surgical planning and good aesthetic outcome. We present a case of soft tissue reconstruction in Parry Romberg syndrome with anterolateral thigh flap with use of three- dimensional laser scanning.
Parry Romberg syndrome also known as progressive hemifacial atrophy (PHA) is an acquired, typically unilateral distortion of face, due to atrophy of skin, soft tissues and muscles with occasional bony involvement. [ 1 ] It was first described by Parry in 1825 [ 2 ] and Romberg in 1846 [ 3 ]. Disease manifestation starts in first or early second decade of life affecting women slightly more than men [ 4 ]. True incidence of disease is unknown due to its rare presentation, overlapping features with linear scleroderma and lack of standardized diagnostic criteria [ 5 ]. Exact etio pathogenesis is yet not defined, however, various theories like auto-immunity, viral infections, trauma and inflammation of brain has been proposed [ 6 ]. Patients usually require aesthetic restoration of underlying soft tissue and bony defects. Reconstructive options include autologous fat grafting and tissue transfer, depending on severity of disease, degree of deformity, patient compatibility and surgeons’ preference.
A 17-years-female presented to our tertiary center concerned for her left sided facial deformity. At birth no such deformity was noticed by the parents ( Fig. 1A ), However, -gradual change in contour and sunken in appearance of left side of face was appreciated at age of 2 years. Parents also gave history of accidental fall of an iron box over left side of her face and history of epileptic episodes during sleep, for 5 years of age. Physical examination revealed marked facial asymmetry with hypoplasia of left side of face and deviation of nose, lips, and chin to left side ( Fig. 1 B and C). Facial nerve examination was normal. Patient was investigated and parents were counselled regarding the nature of disease, treatment options and outcomes. Three -dimensional computed tomography scan (3 D- CT) revealed, shortened ramus of left hemimadible with subcutaneous fat atrophy of left anterior maxillary, zygomatic, left parotid, buccal, and masseter space ( Fig. 2 A). Laser scanning and 3 D printing was done for accurate defect analysis and planning of volume restoration ( Fig. 2 B). The atrophic area was ~10 cm × 5 cm with a volume discrepancy of 299 ml between the left and right face. A free anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap was planned and counselling was done for additional corrective surgeries if required.
(A) Patient at 6 months of age without any deformity. (B, C) At presentation front and left oblique facial profile.
(A) Preoperative CT showing shortened left hemimandible. (B) 3 D model.
Marking of atrophied site of face was done and template of defect was made using 3 D laser scanning ( Fig. 3 ). For perforator mapping, a line drawn from superolateral aspect of patella to the anterosuperior iliac spine on the ipsilateral thigh of affected site ( Fig. 4 A). A 3-cm-radius circle was drawn, centered on midpoint of this line and with use of a handheld Doppler probe; perforators inside the circle were identified followed by marking of the desired flap. A 12 cm × 6 cm flap based on single musculocutaneous perforator was harvested ( Fig. 4 B). The flap was planned larger than estimated dimensions, due to the retractile properties of skin and to compensate for contraction. It was done so because, if a flap is stretched after harvest to fit the defect, it may reduce its viability leading to necrosis [ 7 ]. Preparation of the facial pocket was done and skin and subcutaneous tissue was elevated towards the nasolabial fold along with dissection of recipient vessels (facial artery and facial vein). The harvested flap was de-epithelialized and secured to periosteum of zygoma and infra-orbital rim and mandible. Primary closure of donor site was done. Flap settled well without any complications. Post-operatively no seroma, wound dehiscence or flap necrosis was seen. Donor site healed well. A second stage surgery for contour restoration was done after 18 months in form of flap debulking. There was dramatic improvement in facial contour and symmetry which was satisfactory for the patient.

PHA results in marked facial asymmetry which leads to psychological upset [ 8 ]. The condition is self- limiting and progresses for years to decades before cessation [ 9 ]. Diagnosis is based on detailed history, clinical examination and certain specialized tests based on individual disease manifestation. Hemifacial atrophy following trauma is rare. In our case, asymmetry was noticed by parents following trauma. Surgical treatment is usually done after the cessation of atrophic process and options include autologous fat grafting, pedicled, or free flaps depending upon the defect. At times, more than one treatment modality or a combination may be required [ 10 ].
For moderate to severe fat atrophy associated with bony hypoplasia, free tissue transfer is usually warranted. Various free flaps have been discussed in literature including latissimus dorsi [ 11 ], radial forearm, scapular and parascapular and ALT flaps. Since its first description by Song et al., ALT flap has been one of ideal donor site for soft tissue reconstruction as the flap bulk can mask underlying bony hypoplasia and the donor site closure is possible with inconspicuous scar. Literature review describes a large series of ALT flap for facial contour restoration in case of PRS with its various modifications. Recently, use of laser scanning and 3 D printing for good aesthetic outcome has also been illustrated. In our case 3D printing was used to achieve our reconstructive goal of normal fullness and contour. We did address mandibular hypoplasia by bulk of ALT. Recent advancement in computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques has made feasibility of custom-made artificial bones possible. While these procedures have specific advantages, their use is limited due to stability and strength of implants. Also, use of any artificial material is associated with the risks of damage and infection, along with expulsion of implant. Hence, Brawn et al., has preferred autologous tissue reconstruction due to their long-term outcome [ 12 ]. In a recent case series of three patients by K.F. Abdullaev et al ., defects resulting from PRS and hemifacial microsomia were addressed with ALT flap, good and satisfactory aesthetic results were obtained. In third patient, with 3-D visualization, detailed analysis of defect and proper preoperative planning good contour restoration was achieved after first surgery only [ 13 ].
Facial contour restoration is a challenge for reconstructive surgeon in PRS. Proper planning, analysis of components of defect and discussion of various reconstructive options with patient is mandatory. 3 D printing reduces number of procedures required and results in good aesthetic outcome.

Nowadays, inkjet printers are widely used all around the world. But how do they transfer the digital image to a map that can control nozzle firing? In this preliminary report, we briefly illustrate that part of the printing pipeline that starts from a halftone image and ends with Hardware Ready Bits (HRBs). We also describe the implementation of the multi-pass printing method with a designed print mask. HRBs are used to read an input halftone CMY image and output a binary map of each color to decide whether or not to eject the corresponding coloranr drop at each pixel position. In general, for an inkjet printer, each row of the image corresponds to one specific nozzle in each swath so that each swath will be the height of the printhead \cite{torpey1997multipass}. To avoid visible white streaks due to clogged or burned out color nozzles, the method called multi-pass printing is implemented. Subsequently, the print mask is introduced so that we can decide during which pass each pixel should be printed. Once we figure out how to transfer the digital image to our printing signals. We start to think about improving the color performance for the inkjet printer. In one of our previous papers \cite{wang2020developing}, we described the color management pipeline that was applied to our nail inkjet printer, which is used to map the source gamut to the destination printer gamut. However, the resulting prints are not as vivid as we would like to have, since those prints are not well saturated. To obtain more saturated prints, we propose a saturation enhancement method based on image segmentation and hue angle. This method will not necessarily give us the closest representation of the colors within the input image but could give us more saturated prints. The main idea of our saturation enhancement method is to keep the lightness and hue constant, while stretching the chroma component.
In one of our previous papers \cite{hu2021improving}, we mostly focused on the color saturation problem in our inkjet printer. However, our partner reported that there are some boundary noise pixels on the background, which are quite visible when the background is white. By checking the pipeline of our printing procedure, we realized that the noise stray dots are generated during the halftoning procedure. This part of the dissertation is dedicated to separating the white background from the foreground, which enables us to constrain the error diffusion process inside the white background. The main idea is to apply image segmentation, which could help us to precisely extract the background.
Lastly, inspired by the paper \cite{smith2023chiral}, we decided to design an aperiodic clustered-dot screen, which may have better performance compared to the current DBS screen. This screen generation method is offline, so the time cost is not our main consideration. The output halftone result is what we concentrate on. This screen is generated based on a polygon shape, which is called tile(1,1) defined by the paper \cite{smith2023chiral}. We keep extending this single polygon shape to obtain the combination aperiodic shape that is called a supertile. After obtaining the final supertile, we assigned each tile(1,1) shape to either a dot or a hole based on the complementary symmetry property. Finally, based on some interpolation methods, we generate the threshold matrix.

Islamabad [Pakistan], August 19 (ANI): Jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has applied to become the next chancellor of Britain’s Oxford University, his party said on Monday.
The Oxford alumnus “formally submitted” the request via Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, the London-based spokesman for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party said on the social media platform X.
“Pakistan’s national hero and Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, founder and chairman of Pakistan’s biggest political party PTI, a cricketing legend, a philanthropist and an alumnus of Oxford University, is running for the position of Chancellor of Oxford University, all while being imprisoned,” the PTI post read.
“Despite being unlawfully incarcerated for over a year, Khan remains committed to his principles and the causes he champions. Zulfi Bukhari has confirmed that the application has been formally submitted,” it added.
Khan’s party’s announcement comes after Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong, announced in February that he would be stepping down as Oxford chancellor, Al Jazeera reported.
However, the list of candidates for the 10-year term will not be made public until October, according to the university’s website, and voting is to take place at the end of that month.
Khan graduated from the university in 1975 after studying philosophy, politics, and economics.
He then reportedly led a playboy lifestyle during his career as one of Pakistan’s greatest cricket players, regularly gracing the pages of Britain’s gossip magazines, according to Al Jazeera.
The former Pakistan premier married three times in his life, including to British socialite and filmmaker Jemima Goldsmith. He also served as the chancellor of the University of Bradford from 2005 until 2014. Khan later turned to philanthropy and politics, serving as Pakistan’s prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
Khan was ousted from premiership in 2022 when he lost a vote of confidence, following which he launched a strong comeback campaign attacking Pakistan’s military, whose leading generals had once backed him, and drew massive crowds onto the nation’s streets.
Khan was imprisoned in August last year on various charges from corruption to inciting violence. He recently completely one year in jail.
The PTI founder has called these charges “politically motivated” and designed to keep him from power, Al Jazeera reported. (ANI)

Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has applied to become the next chancellor of Britain’s prestigious University of Oxford, his party said.
Khan, prime minister from 2018 to 2022, has just marked one year in prison on various charges from corruption to inciting violence that he said are politically motivated and designed to keep him from power.
“Imran Khan had given instructions that he would like to submit his application and now the application scrutiny will take place,” said Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari, the London-based spokesman for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
“It’s a ceremonial post but one with utmost prestige and importance and Imran Khan, being one of the larger or more popular names coming out of Oxford, it would be brilliant to see him as chancellor,” he said.
Conservative peer Chris Patten, the last British governor of Hong Kong, announced in February he was stepping down as Oxford chancellor.
The list of candidates for the 10-year term will not be made public until October, according to the university’s website, with voting taking place at the end of the month.
Khan graduated from Oxford in 1975 after studying philosophy, politics, and economics.
He led a playboy lifestyle during his career as one of Pakistan’s greatest cricket players, regularly gracing the pages of Britain’s gossip magazines.
Married three times, including to British socialite and filmmaker Jemima Goldsmith, he later turned to philanthropy and politics.
He faced a backlash from women’s rights groups while prime minister for linking Pakistan’s high rates of sexual violence to the clothes that women wear.
Khan was ousted in 2022 and then launched a comeback campaign in which he criticised Pakistan’s powerful military, whose leading generals had once backed him, and drew massive crowds onto the nation’s streets.
“If he does become the chancellor, he would be the first of Asian descent. It wouldn’t be something only for Pakistan, but it would be a great achievement for all of Asia and the rest of the world,” Bukhari said.
Other prominent applicants and Oxford alumni include former foreign secretary William Hague and former EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson, according to British media reports.
