Experts say AI is the new social media — and parents are not prepared

“parents and teachers are pretty much out of the loop, so that young people are using ai platforms with virtually no guidance,” says jim steyer of common sense media, by rosie colosi | today • published september 18, 2024 • updated on september 18, 2024 at 5:27 pm.

According to a new study, there is a gap between what parents think their kids are doing when they do homework online and that they're actually doing.

Common Sense Media , a company that aims to build a more healthy, equitable and empowering future for all kids in the digital age, talked to more than 1,000 teenagers to find out how they are interacting with AI, or Artificial Intelligence, on a daily basis.

📺 24/7 South Florida news stream: Watch NBC6 free wherever you are

The  company's research  found that 7 out of 10 teens between ages 13 and 18 use at least one type of generative AI tool that take a question or prompt and provide an instant answer.

Most often, teenagers are using these tools to do their homework.

"Parents and teachers are pretty much out of the loop, so that young people are using AI platforms with virtually no guidance," says Jim Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media. In fact, only 37% of parents whose kids use AI actually knew their children were using it.

Steyer said that parents have learned valuable lessons about technology from the introduction of the social media craze. At the time, it had few guardrails and kids had unfettered access to a variety of outlets.

This time around, parents have a chance to get ahead of the wave.

The upside of ai.

A growing number of experts, like  Jonathan Haidt  who wrote “ The Anxious Generation , have expressed concern with the abundance of technological resources kids have access to.

But teens and technology aren't always a bad combination.

NBC's Kate Snow talked to Savannah Hill, a junior in high school who takes dance classes four days each week. Her busy schedule was "one of the reasons why I ended up resorting to ChatGPT," Hill says.

When she had trouble catching up on her work in physics class, Hill says she "would go to ChatGPT to understand the topic that was being taught."

Like many overwhelmed parents, Hill's mother, Muna Heaven, said she didn't know her daughter was using ChatGPT and felt "disappointed that the pace of the class got to the point where she had to find her own resources."

The discovery wasn't all bad, however. "I'm very proud that she found a way to teach herself independently." She added, "I think that aspect of AI is great."

Here's what parents need to know about AI

Nearly half of parents haven't talked to their teenage children about AI and the vast majority of parents say that schools haven't communicated with them about AI policies, says Common Sense Media.

So far, teens have been left to figure out their own rules about AI, which is why Steyer said, "It's essential for parents to take test drives with their kids, and learn with their kids how AI works."

For kids who utilize AI for schoolwork, Common Sense Media recommends teaching kids how to form the right prompt and fact check AI's responses.

It's also important to teach children not to rely on AI for all the answers.

Heaven noted how important it is for teenagers to "hold fast" to their "authentic voice," and that "the magic is in the creativity" that comes directly from the kids themselves

"And I think that maybe just raising their awareness of what's not good, having more conversations around the dinner table is what I see as one of the mechanisms to get our children through," she added.

So let’s jump in!

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

body-five-star-best-number-one

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

What 570 Experts Predict the Future of Work Will Look Like

  • Nicky Dries,
  • Joost Luyckx,
  • Philip Rogiers

the homework experts reviews

How to make sense of divergent perspectives — and shape a better conversation about what comes next.

No one knows exactly what the future of work will look like, but many people have opinions. Research involving Belgian newspaper articles and experts shows that public commentators on the topic tend to fall into three buckets: optimists (largely tech entrepreneurs), skeptics (largely economists) , and pessimists (authors and journalists). So, who’s right — should the future involve accelerated progress, degrowth, or something in between? Because each group uses different research and has different points of view, it’s impossible to tell. But it is possible to better understand all three arguments, and to think critically about what you, personally, want the future of work to look like. A robust public debate involving every citizen, policy maker, manager, and CEO is the best way to ensure all voices are heard; after all, the future is what we make it.

Who’s right about the future of work?

  • Nicky Dries is a full professor of Organizational Behavior at KU Leuven and at BI Norwegian Business School. Her research focuses on re-politicizing the future of work and stimulating democratic debate, using methods aimed at triggering people’s imagination about the future like media analysis, robotic art and design, virtual reality, and science fiction movies.
  • Joost Luyckx is an associate professor of Business and Society at IESEG School of Management and a research fellow at KU Leuven. His research focuses on legitimacy struggles over multinational companies in the global public debate, more desirable futures of work, alternative organizations, and neutralization of social movement activism.
  • Philip Rogiers is an assistant professor of organizational behavior and organizational theory at University Ramon Llull, Esade. His research focuses on the transformation and deconstruction of jobs, along with the exploration of alternative organizational forms that support a more human-centered future of work.

Ensuring electronic safety in the US following pager explosions in Lebanon, Syria

by GEOFF HARRIS | The National Desk

WASHINGTON (TND) — Following the electronic explosions in Lebanon and Syria this week, security experts tell us the U.S. might want to review its policies, especially when it comes to importing similar electronic devices.

Experts say both explosions in Lebanon and Syria were sophisticated, long-planned operations possibly carried out by infiltrating the supply chain and rigging the walkie-talkies and pagers with explosives before being imported.

Dr. Craig Albert, a professor of political science at Augusta University said members of Hezbollah were using pagers to communicate out of fear that Israel could track their cellphones and carry out a targeted attack.

Hezbollah made the option to move to low-grade technology, older technology. Israel said ok, that's great, we'll intercept the technology and plant explosives in it," Albert said.

The attack Tuesday was possibly carried out by infiltrating the supply chain and arming the pagers with explosives before being imported to Lebanon, the Associated Press reports. Michael Wallace, a professor at Tulane University said this would take a lot of planning.

This was a very surgical operation. You know the only people that should have had these pagers on themselves were Hezbollah operatives," said Wallace.

When it comes to ensuring the safety of electronics coming into the U.S., Albert said America has different regulatory controls and authorities in place to check if anything was planted in certain devices.

"Especially explosive materials through port authorities and things of that nature," Albert said.

This is why he believes it's highly unlikely a third-party country could intercept the supply chain and interfere with the U.S. infrastructure similarly.

"Not everything is checked but it's checked enough where most people haven't thought of this type of action on such a large scale against the United States," said Albert.

The Cult of Homework

America’s devotion to the practice stems in part from the fact that it’s what today’s parents and teachers grew up with themselves.

the homework experts reviews

America has long had a fickle relationship with homework. A century or so ago, progressive reformers argued that it made kids unduly stressed , which later led in some cases to district-level bans on it for all grades under seventh. This anti-homework sentiment faded, though, amid mid-century fears that the U.S. was falling behind the Soviet Union (which led to more homework), only to resurface in the 1960s and ’70s, when a more open culture came to see homework as stifling play and creativity (which led to less). But this didn’t last either: In the ’80s, government researchers blamed America’s schools for its economic troubles and recommended ramping homework up once more.

The 21st century has so far been a homework-heavy era, with American teenagers now averaging about twice as much time spent on homework each day as their predecessors did in the 1990s . Even little kids are asked to bring school home with them. A 2015 study , for instance, found that kindergarteners, who researchers tend to agree shouldn’t have any take-home work, were spending about 25 minutes a night on it.

But not without pushback. As many children, not to mention their parents and teachers, are drained by their daily workload, some schools and districts are rethinking how homework should work—and some teachers are doing away with it entirely. They’re reviewing the research on homework (which, it should be noted, is contested) and concluding that it’s time to revisit the subject.

Hillsborough, California, an affluent suburb of San Francisco, is one district that has changed its ways. The district, which includes three elementary schools and a middle school, worked with teachers and convened panels of parents in order to come up with a homework policy that would allow students more unscheduled time to spend with their families or to play. In August 2017, it rolled out an updated policy, which emphasized that homework should be “meaningful” and banned due dates that fell on the day after a weekend or a break.

“The first year was a bit bumpy,” says Louann Carlomagno, the district’s superintendent. She says the adjustment was at times hard for the teachers, some of whom had been doing their job in a similar fashion for a quarter of a century. Parents’ expectations were also an issue. Carlomagno says they took some time to “realize that it was okay not to have an hour of homework for a second grader—that was new.”

Most of the way through year two, though, the policy appears to be working more smoothly. “The students do seem to be less stressed based on conversations I’ve had with parents,” Carlomagno says. It also helps that the students performed just as well on the state standardized test last year as they have in the past.

Earlier this year, the district of Somerville, Massachusetts, also rewrote its homework policy, reducing the amount of homework its elementary and middle schoolers may receive. In grades six through eight, for example, homework is capped at an hour a night and can only be assigned two to three nights a week.

Jack Schneider, an education professor at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell whose daughter attends school in Somerville, is generally pleased with the new policy. But, he says, it’s part of a bigger, worrisome pattern. “The origin for this was general parental dissatisfaction, which not surprisingly was coming from a particular demographic,” Schneider says. “Middle-class white parents tend to be more vocal about concerns about homework … They feel entitled enough to voice their opinions.”

Schneider is all for revisiting taken-for-granted practices like homework, but thinks districts need to take care to be inclusive in that process. “I hear approximately zero middle-class white parents talking about how homework done best in grades K through two actually strengthens the connection between home and school for young people and their families,” he says. Because many of these parents already feel connected to their school community, this benefit of homework can seem redundant. “They don’t need it,” Schneider says, “so they’re not advocating for it.”

That doesn’t mean, necessarily, that homework is more vital in low-income districts. In fact, there are different, but just as compelling, reasons it can be burdensome in these communities as well. Allison Wienhold, who teaches high-school Spanish in the small town of Dunkerton, Iowa, has phased out homework assignments over the past three years. Her thinking: Some of her students, she says, have little time for homework because they’re working 30 hours a week or responsible for looking after younger siblings.

As educators reduce or eliminate the homework they assign, it’s worth asking what amount and what kind of homework is best for students. It turns out that there’s some disagreement about this among researchers, who tend to fall in one of two camps.

In the first camp is Harris Cooper, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University. Cooper conducted a review of the existing research on homework in the mid-2000s , and found that, up to a point, the amount of homework students reported doing correlates with their performance on in-class tests. This correlation, the review found, was stronger for older students than for younger ones.

This conclusion is generally accepted among educators, in part because it’s compatible with “the 10-minute rule,” a rule of thumb popular among teachers suggesting that the proper amount of homework is approximately 10 minutes per night, per grade level—that is, 10 minutes a night for first graders, 20 minutes a night for second graders, and so on, up to two hours a night for high schoolers.

In Cooper’s eyes, homework isn’t overly burdensome for the typical American kid. He points to a 2014 Brookings Institution report that found “little evidence that the homework load has increased for the average student”; onerous amounts of homework, it determined, are indeed out there, but relatively rare. Moreover, the report noted that most parents think their children get the right amount of homework, and that parents who are worried about under-assigning outnumber those who are worried about over-assigning. Cooper says that those latter worries tend to come from a small number of communities with “concerns about being competitive for the most selective colleges and universities.”

According to Alfie Kohn, squarely in camp two, most of the conclusions listed in the previous three paragraphs are questionable. Kohn, the author of The Homework Myth: Why Our Kids Get Too Much of a Bad Thing , considers homework to be a “reliable extinguisher of curiosity,” and has several complaints with the evidence that Cooper and others cite in favor of it. Kohn notes, among other things, that Cooper’s 2006 meta-analysis doesn’t establish causation, and that its central correlation is based on children’s (potentially unreliable) self-reporting of how much time they spend doing homework. (Kohn’s prolific writing on the subject alleges numerous other methodological faults.)

In fact, other correlations make a compelling case that homework doesn’t help. Some countries whose students regularly outperform American kids on standardized tests, such as Japan and Denmark, send their kids home with less schoolwork , while students from some countries with higher homework loads than the U.S., such as Thailand and Greece, fare worse on tests. (Of course, international comparisons can be fraught because so many factors, in education systems and in societies at large, might shape students’ success.)

Kohn also takes issue with the way achievement is commonly assessed. “If all you want is to cram kids’ heads with facts for tomorrow’s tests that they’re going to forget by next week, yeah, if you give them more time and make them do the cramming at night, that could raise the scores,” he says. “But if you’re interested in kids who know how to think or enjoy learning, then homework isn’t merely ineffective, but counterproductive.”

His concern is, in a way, a philosophical one. “The practice of homework assumes that only academic growth matters, to the point that having kids work on that most of the school day isn’t enough,” Kohn says. What about homework’s effect on quality time spent with family? On long-term information retention? On critical-thinking skills? On social development? On success later in life? On happiness? The research is quiet on these questions.

Another problem is that research tends to focus on homework’s quantity rather than its quality, because the former is much easier to measure than the latter. While experts generally agree that the substance of an assignment matters greatly (and that a lot of homework is uninspiring busywork), there isn’t a catchall rule for what’s best—the answer is often specific to a certain curriculum or even an individual student.

Given that homework’s benefits are so narrowly defined (and even then, contested), it’s a bit surprising that assigning so much of it is often a classroom default, and that more isn’t done to make the homework that is assigned more enriching. A number of things are preserving this state of affairs—things that have little to do with whether homework helps students learn.

Jack Schneider, the Massachusetts parent and professor, thinks it’s important to consider the generational inertia of the practice. “The vast majority of parents of public-school students themselves are graduates of the public education system,” he says. “Therefore, their views of what is legitimate have been shaped already by the system that they would ostensibly be critiquing.” In other words, many parents’ own history with homework might lead them to expect the same for their children, and anything less is often taken as an indicator that a school or a teacher isn’t rigorous enough. (This dovetails with—and complicates—the finding that most parents think their children have the right amount of homework.)

Barbara Stengel, an education professor at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College, brought up two developments in the educational system that might be keeping homework rote and unexciting. The first is the importance placed in the past few decades on standardized testing, which looms over many public-school classroom decisions and frequently discourages teachers from trying out more creative homework assignments. “They could do it, but they’re afraid to do it, because they’re getting pressure every day about test scores,” Stengel says.

Second, she notes that the profession of teaching, with its relatively low wages and lack of autonomy, struggles to attract and support some of the people who might reimagine homework, as well as other aspects of education. “Part of why we get less interesting homework is because some of the people who would really have pushed the limits of that are no longer in teaching,” she says.

“In general, we have no imagination when it comes to homework,” Stengel says. She wishes teachers had the time and resources to remake homework into something that actually engages students. “If we had kids reading—anything, the sports page, anything that they’re able to read—that’s the best single thing. If we had kids going to the zoo, if we had kids going to parks after school, if we had them doing all of those things, their test scores would improve. But they’re not. They’re going home and doing homework that is not expanding what they think about.”

“Exploratory” is one word Mike Simpson used when describing the types of homework he’d like his students to undertake. Simpson is the head of the Stone Independent School, a tiny private high school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, that opened in 2017. “We were lucky to start a school a year and a half ago,” Simpson says, “so it’s been easy to say we aren’t going to assign worksheets, we aren’t going assign regurgitative problem sets.” For instance, a half-dozen students recently built a 25-foot trebuchet on campus.

Simpson says he thinks it’s a shame that the things students have to do at home are often the least fulfilling parts of schooling: “When our students can’t make the connection between the work they’re doing at 11 o’clock at night on a Tuesday to the way they want their lives to be, I think we begin to lose the plot.”

When I talked with other teachers who did homework makeovers in their classrooms, I heard few regrets. Brandy Young, a second-grade teacher in Joshua, Texas, stopped assigning take-home packets of worksheets three years ago, and instead started asking her students to do 20 minutes of pleasure reading a night. She says she’s pleased with the results, but she’s noticed something funny. “Some kids,” she says, “really do like homework.” She’s started putting out a bucket of it for students to draw from voluntarily—whether because they want an additional challenge or something to pass the time at home.

Chris Bronke, a high-school English teacher in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, told me something similar. This school year, he eliminated homework for his class of freshmen, and now mostly lets students study on their own or in small groups during class time. It’s usually up to them what they work on each day, and Bronke has been impressed by how they’ve managed their time.

In fact, some of them willingly spend time on assignments at home, whether because they’re particularly engaged, because they prefer to do some deeper thinking outside school, or because they needed to spend time in class that day preparing for, say, a biology test the following period. “They’re making meaningful decisions about their time that I don’t think education really ever gives students the experience, nor the practice, of doing,” Bronke said.

The typical prescription offered by those overwhelmed with homework is to assign less of it—to subtract. But perhaps a more useful approach, for many classrooms, would be to create homework only when teachers and students believe it’s actually needed to further the learning that takes place in class—to start with nothing, and add as necessary.

Ending the Homework Debate: Expert Advice on What Works

After exploring the case against homework as well as the ways homework benefits students , it’s clear that both sides have valid arguments. After examining the evidence, we’ve come up with recommendations for both teachers and parents for homework that contributes to students’ academic growth.

What kind of homework is beneficial?

While some research points to homework increasing test scores, what researchers, parents, teachers, and even students want is homework that deepens content knowledge and thus understanding, critical thinking, and the ability of students to bring those to the classroom.

Homework must focus on quality, not quantity

In the research journal article “When is Homework Worth the Time?”, co-author Robert H. Tai summarizes the analysis of 18,000 tenth-grade transcripts by saying, “The results of this study imply that homework should be purposeful, and that the purpose must be understood by both the teacher and the students.” The authors determined that in order to be worthwhile, homework should meet the following criteria:

  • Eliminate specific quantities of homework, such as the common suggestion of 10 minutes per night per grade.
  • Instead of length, assignments should focus on making analytical connections.
  • Math homework should consist of a small number of different types of exercises instead of large quantities of similiar problems.
  • Science assignments should ask students to explore concepts rather than answer prescribed questions.

The study concluded with a call for further research in order to pinpoint the most effective type of homework.

Homework should meet the needs of each student

Another important factor in homework quality has to do with the needs of the recipients. Professor Gerald LeTendre discussed this in Penn State University’s article “Is Homework Bad for Kids?”, saying that young children do not benefit from homework as much as older students, because they lack the awareness and reflection required for good study habits.

Additionally, LeTendre points out that homework must address a child’s “actual academic problem.” In order to discuss these individual academic problems, differentiation, a key term in classroom management, must also be used in out-of-classroom work. LeTendre suggests that homework should be assigned at the individual level and reviewed with the student regularly to ensure its effectiveness.

One differentiation strategy: Flipped classrooms

Of course, differentiated homework leads to questions of fairness and the very real problem of teachers’ time. With increasingly large class sizes, creating individual homework plans for every student could be an insurmountable task. One alternative to such problems is the flipped classroom, where students engage the lecture material outside of the classroom and then classroom time is dedicated to what would have been homework under the traditional setup.  Teachers are then free to allow students to work in groups or individually, visiting each group and testing their mastery along the way.

Skills developed through effective homework: Spaced repetition, retrieval practice, desirable difficulties, deliberate practice

Changing the entire functionality of the course isn’t necessary, though, if instructors remember key features of effective homework as identified by the emerging field of Mind, Brain, and Education, says Annie Murphy Paul. In the article “How Can We Make Homework Worthwhile?”, Paul identifies important characteristics such as spaced repetition, retrieval practice, and desirable difficulties.

Spaced repetition

Spaced repetition covers and revisits material over time in ways that traditional homework has not, revisiting material that has been covered in the recent and distant past to reinforce a student’s knowledge base.

Retrieval practice

Retrieval practice can lead to interesting assignments like the role-playing homework described in “How to Create Effective Homework,” in which students adopted a historical persona. Their drive to maintain their character extended into their motivation for completing homework.

Desirable difficulty

Additional and sometimes fun strategies include working with what researchers call “cognitive disfluency” by breaking convention in order to more fully gain the attention of students via changes in fonts or sizes, intentional grammatical errors, and even breaking free of categorically organized homework. A math worksheet that combines division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction problems randomly, for example, garners more attention from the brain than one that focuses on a single skill.

Deliberate practice

Finally, homework must be what Paul calls deliberate practice. Students and teachers must both be fully aware of homework’s purpose and point. This leads to one of the most important points about homework: it is not effective without student buy-in. Both common sense and research show that the only chance a student has to benefit from homework is when the student actually attempts completion — meaning that in addition to being effective, students have to be motivated to complete it.  That motivation only comes when students understand how and why homework is important.

I would definitely use your platform again. I saved hours on statistical analysis thanks to my expert, Jim.

Amazing. I was given a set of equations to solve using various methods such as substitution and elimination. I had to show my work step-by-step and provide a final solution for each equation. Every time I tried to do it on my own, it just didn't add up. Thanks to additional study sessions, I'm no longer behind.

Best Homework Service!

I spent a lot of time doing my research on different homework services. I didn't want to get scammed or blackmailed when giving my school login credentials. I saw the other testimonials for Homework Guy and tried it out. I ended up giving him my login info for my school's assignments website and he handled two classes for me from start to finish. Paying was weekly so that eased my worries of being scammed. He completed all assignments on time, gave me constant updates, and got me an A in both classes. Very happy with the service and highly recommend!

“Only few could match,,!”

The work and assistance provided by best home work helpers are matchless. Its of high quality indeed. They not only help u in completing ur task but also provides ample tutorials to contemplate ur studies. Must try once,!

“Writer does not understand English!”

Well, at least you saved me the trouble of combing through the various texts required to complete my work. It is however clear that my project was not completed by a native English speaker, going by the awful grammar that was used to write my essay. I am very disappointed by their services and would never recommend this company to anyone!

Is Brainly the answer to your child's homework woes?

We tested the peer-to-peer learning platform to find out.

When was the last time you contemplated a Pythagorean theorem—or any other high school math concept, for that matter? We’re the first to admit that when it comes to helping our kids with homework, time has dulled our ability to recall arcane concepts—particularly in math and science—and has basically rendered us useless as homework helpers.

The concept of an online-peer-to-peer learning platform piqued our interest, so we—along with a couple of teachers—dove in to see just how useful Brainly is and if it’s your child’s answer to remote-learning woes.

What is Brainly?

Brainly is, essentially, a crowd-sourcing platform where users can post questions regarding their homework and get answers from anonymous users. Geared towards middle, high school, and college students, it’s a peer-to-peer crowdsourcing information site that functions similarly to Quora: A homework or test question is posed and other members can offer answers. Simple as that.

What we thought of Brainly

We spent a week using Brainly and solicited input from a high school history teacher and Advanced Placement facilitator, a college physics professor, and a high school freshman. Here is what we thought.

Image from Brainly site of sign-up process

Posting questions is easy as posting on Facebook or Twitter.

Overall, it’s pretty easy to get started on Brainly. It’s a rapid sign-up process and, if you’re looking for answers for something specific, the search function is simple to use and gives instant gratification. We also like that you can quickly scan for verified answers, which have been vetted by Brainly expert volunteers and are determined to be correct and accurate. In terms of posting questions, it’s as easy as posting on Twitter and Facebook; you can add files for easy uploads from worksheets.

The quality of the verified answers were pretty good, however if your question doesn’t have a verified answer, there is a lot of garbage to wade through, and that’s where the site gets confusing to new users and lost points with all of the testers overall.

As a parent scanning for whether or not it's a site I'd want my child on, initial use of the site had some confusing aspects. The site is riddled with random questions that have nothing to do with school or learning, there are more incorrect answers than correct ones to wade through, and it’s initially difficult to get your bearings as a parent figuring out just how useful the site is without an actual aim or specific question at hand. If you're just coming to roam around without a clear intent, the site can look like a wasteland of random posts. However, for students who arrive with a purpose and an actual question, it's very user friendly and easy to rapidly find what you need—you just have to exercise due diligence and be ready to determine the accuracy of the answers you find.

A major bonus to this site is it's a 24/7 repository of information. If your child waited until the last minute to do their homework, no worries! There's still homework help to be found and an answer may appear for them within literal minutes. The question is, will that answer be correct and error-free? That's up for debate.

Image from Brainly site of user questions

Verified answers yield the best results. Other answers are hit-or-miss.

This is where things get problematic. While the verified answers are generally correct ones, there is a whole lot of misinformation to wade through with error-laden responses, or answers that have no bearings on the original question. Since users gain points and add to their positive profile ranking for every question answered, incorrect or irrelevant answers are ostensibly posted to help the user increase their ranking on the site. This is something that Brainly works to remedy with a force of volunteer moderators, but those answers can still be up for a while before they are addressed.

Christopher Duston, a physics professor at Merrimack College in North Andover, MA, says that he looked at a variety of college-level math and physics questions and found many of the answers to be incorrect. He questions the usefulness of the site and found the number of nonsensical answers and non-subject-related interactions to be frustrating. What he did mention as a positive, however, is that you can upvote answers that are actually useful and the ease of reporting erroneous content was simple. We tested the reporting system as well and we were pleased with how effortless it was.

Luca D., a 15-year-old high school freshman in Massachusetts, says that, as a rule, he doesn’t post questions to Brainly, for fear of getting the wrong answers. He has used the site for a while now but says he only uses it to search for basic information, and then he cross-references the answers he finds to verify accuracy.

“I wouldn’t say that the quality of the answers is all that great. You have to go in with an amount of critical thinking and you have to have some knowledge of a subject, otherwise you can find some pretty bad answers,” he says, adding that, for most people he knows, Brainly is a place for copy and pasting. He says “it’s not a place that inspires critical thinking,” but he does find it useful as a jumping off point.

Educational benefits

Image from Brainly site of non-academic questions asked by users

Sometimes questions are less than academic.

A quick run through and we found users talking about dating preferences, asking to meet new people on Zoom, and posting discount codes for sunglass purchases. For better or for worse, students are using this as a new social networking opportunity—and that’s important for parents to know. While you may think your kids are spending time crowdsourcing for answers to their French homework, they may actually be connecting with faceless strangers online.

We asked Jakub Piwnik, communications director at Brainly, how the site plans to address issues like this. He says that the company relies greatly on a diverse group of Brainly volunteers to help vet information and ensure that it’s a safe environment for users. He says non-education-based activity makes up “a fractional percentage of platform engagement” and that most questions not related to study are promptly removed from the platform

“Brainly volunteers are a… diverse group, comprised mostly of students, but also include current and former educators as well—all united by a passion for education. They support our community… and [help] moderate content when it falls outside our guidelines. Our volunteers embody the spirit of learning and helpfulness that drives our community," says Piwnik.

Is it worth it?

Overall grade: C+ Brainly has a noble goal to be a helpful resource for a diverse group of learners and it's filling a much-needed niche, however we wouldn't say it's an online gathering of intellectualism quite yet. It's a useful site and, as it grows, we are hopeful it will work out the kinks, but—as it currently functions—I'd be wary of my child using it as a dependable place for answers or educational growth.

Annmarie Stackhouse, a high school history teacher and an Advanced Placement facilitator in Gloucester, MA, says that, in terms of using the site for what it’s actually meant for, she’s wary of “honor code”, which cautions against plagiarism—both in posts and with users taking information from the site.

“If people are giving answers it is my experience as a veteran teacher that most will copy and paste that answer without changing it,” she says. “I may sign up as a teacher just to see if my kids are cheating.”

They're as fake as a three-dollar bill, my friends. You see, these sneaky scammers used to go by the name "codinghomeworkhelp.com" on their previous website. 2024 Homework Help Site Reviews

Top Homework Helper Review

  • Top Homework Helper
  • Pricing based on quotes
  • Tutors at "Ph.D. Level”
  • Asynchronous Q&A style

Top Homework Helper is a site that operates around the clock to offer personalized solutions to your homework challenges. Top Homework Helper emphasizes delivering excellent solutions to help students make a positive impression on their professors. However, a potential concern emerges as Top Homework Helper seems geared toward providing answers rather than facilitating a deep understanding of the subject matter. The FAQ section raises questions about hiring someone to complete assignments, with affirmative responses suggesting a focus on completing tasks rather than fostering learning.

Submit your question and wait

Three straightforward steps guide you through the process of utilizing Top Homework Helper's services. First, you need to submit your homework questions, specifying the subject and attaching relevant documents. Following this, payment is made using PayPal, a debit card, or a credit card, although the pricing details remain undisclosed. An expert then reaches out to provide a solution before the specified deadline.

Get answers on 100+ subjects

Top Homework Helper covers over 100 subjects, including geography, math, biotechnology, humanities, language arts, computer science, and more, typically aligning with 6th- through 12th-grade coursework, including essay writing. In terms of using the services, you can set your own deadlines when submitting homework questions to Top Homework Helper. You'll usually get a solution promptly, with some answers available in as little as 24 hours. However, if you're looking for free online resources or synchronous tutoring, you're out of luck here.

Best Homework Help Sites

Tutors hold PhDs

While we struggled to find any details about the qualifications for working at Top Homework Helper, the online chat feature let us find out super quick. The chat representative told us that the tutors at Top Homework Helper are all "Ph.D. level”. This was highly impressive compared to some companies that hire those with high school diplomas. However, the chat rep also used some pretty broken English in our communication which raised some eyebrows. We're not sure if "Ph.D. level” means that the tutors hold Ph.D.s or if this is just a "level” of knowledge that employees have.

Pricing lacks transparency

Another place we weren't particularly impressed with was the lack of transparency regarding prices. Top Homework Helper uses a quote-based payment system where you pay for each question you ask. While this avoids paying monthly for tutoring services you may or may not need, it does leave a lot of questions. The only statement on the website is that the prices are "reasonable.” But to see any pricing, you'll have to make an account and submit a homework request.

One free revision

Top Homework Helper doesn't appear to offer refunds or guarantees. However, the company does offer a free revision if the original solution to your question is insufficient or unhelpful. This is particularly beneficial when you have writing assignments you need Top Homework Helper's assistance with.

Top Homework Helper lacks recognition from the Better Business Bureau and has gotten lots of student complaints on third-party review sites. On Sitejabber, for example, Top Homework Helper has an average rating of 1 star out of 5. Reviews highlight issues such as grammatical errors in assignments, delayed expert responses, and unclear pricing structures. The absence of transparent pricing until after discussing homework details makes us doubt the platform's reliability and commitment to clear communication.

Too many red flags

There are a lot of red flags to watch out for at Top Homework Helper. On top of the abysmal 1-star review average, you'll find broken English on several pages of the website. Plus, the lack of transparency on pricing is a huge downside since you don't know what you're getting into before you get your quote. Given these factors, it's safer to choose one of our higher-rated options over Top Homework Helper for homework assistance.

There are tons of exceptional online resources and websites that stand ready to assist students with their homework at any time. These platforms cover hundreds of subjects - ranging from math and science to literature, music, art, and even specialized college-level courses. The beauty of these online lifesavers lies in their ability to connect students with experts who are adept at navigating the intricacies of academic challenges.

Late-night study sessions can quickly turn into a frustrating experience when you're grappling with a perplexing assignment. And, not all subjects are easily comprehensible. Every student has a unique learning style. When the classroom explanations fail to provide clarity, the homework can become an uphill battle.

Online homework help services offer tons of different learning tools and features. Imagine having access to personalized tutors, vocabulary flashcards, textbook solutions, searchable essays, and much more. The primary focus isn't merely on solving homework problems but on providing comprehensive, step-by-step assistance that aids in grasping the fundamental concepts.

Whether you're looking for one-on-one help in a tutoring session or a database to find answers specific to your textbook, there's a service out there that will serve your study needs. The best part is that many of these services operate 24/7, so you have a reliable homework lifeline whenever the need arises.

Since there are so many sites out there that offer homework help, making the right choice can be daunting. Before committing to a membership or a pay-per-question service, be sure to check out these criteria:

  • Subjects offered. Make sure the platform you choose has the subjects and level that you need to get your homework questions answered. Some only offer K-12 whereas others offer all grade levels (even for graduate degrees).
  • Cost. Pricing can play a huge role in which service you select. While some companies offer free homework help services, others charge per service or per month. Knowing how much you want to spend and balancing that with the quality of homework help can make sure you find the right company.
  • Reputation. Real user experiences can provide valuable insights into whether or not a service is right for you. Are other students succeeding at getting answers to their homework problems? Are there concerns about payments or security? Check customer reviews and a company's reputation with the Better Business Bureau to get a clear look at how each business operates for students just like you.
  • Variety of services. Everyone has a different learning style. Make sure that your chosen platform has the learning tools you need. Are you looking for resources, such as video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and practice problems? Or do you want one-on-one interaction with a tutor to help explain the homework to you? Whether you want synchronous learning opportunities or asynchronous work at any time of the day, make sure the platform you choose supports that learning style.

To make sure you find the best homework help on the market today, Top Consumer Reviews has meticulously reviewed and ranked the top services. We hope this helps you stop worrying about how you're going to complete your complex homework and begin focusing on getting the answers you need to move forward with your course or degree program. Happy learning!
