January 11, 2022 //  by  Kay Bancroft

As the popularity of student-led learning grows, so does the importance of providing our learners with safe and accurate research sources. While we want to encourage school students to explore their interests, we have to remember that the internet offers a vast supply of information, some of which is unregulated.

We want to help you guide your students to accurate and trusted resources, which is why we've done the hard work for you and found 17 of the best websites for student research.

Along with written content, the site also has a collection of games for students to play.

Internet Safety

It's worth noting that while these sites are designed for children and teenagers, advertisements may still pop up or students may be tempted to stray to different sites. We recommend that you always check out a site yourself before recommending it to your students. It might be wise to consider teaching an online safety lesson before starting any kind of online research project with your students.

You could reach out to your technology department for help with this. There are also some great ideas for lessons on sites such as Teachers Pay Teachers.

The Library

Don't discount your school library for excellent resources and access to texts! Connect with your school librarian and provide them with a list of research topics. They are usually more than happy to dig out some age-appropriate texts and check them out for you to use in your classroom.

However, we all know that one student with a super-specific and obscure interest, and that's when the internet can be an invaluable tool! Online resources are also excellent for when students don't have access to hard copy books, such as during remote learning.

Librarians can also tell you about any sites or databases your school subscribes to and how to navigate online texts you may have access to.

Taking Notes and Plagiarism

Along with teaching students about internet safety, it's also imperative to teach them how to take notes properly and avoid copying straight from the text.

Again, there are some great lessons and videos out there on how to take notes and write research in our own words. Students will definitely need some time and practice with it, but it's a useful topic on which to have a class discussion before they get started.

Reference management. Clean and simple.

Crafting a top-notch school website will help keep everyone in the loop, from students to parents and everyone involved. This is why, we’ve put together 10 handy tips for designing a school website that gets the job done from making your homepage easy to navigate to integrating social media.

✔️1. Make the homepage user-friendly

Keep things simple and easy to find. Put important info like news, events, and links to key pages right up front. For example, you could have a big banner with the latest news, a calendar showing upcoming events, and a menu with quick links to things like admissions and curriculum.

✔️2. Make it accessible

Your website should be easy for everyone to use, even if they have disabilities. Use clear fonts, describe images for people who can’t see them, and make sure the colors work well together. You could even try using a screen reader to check how accessible your site is.

✔️3. Get Social

Add buttons for sharing and following your school’s social media accounts. This helps people spread the word and feel more connected. You could let visitors share articles or events on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

✔️4. Keep navigation simple

Organize your menu so it’s easy to find what people are looking for. Use clear labels and categories like About Us, Academics, Admissions, and Contact Us. That way, visitors can quickly find the info they need.

✔️5. Highlight important pages

Put popular pages like contacts, curriculum, admissions, and the calendar front and center. This makes it easy for everyone to find the most important stuff. You could have a “Quick Links” section on the homepage for fast access.

✔️6. Use a CMS to update your site more easily

Choose a content management system (CMS) that’s easy for anyone to use. That way, staff can keep the website up to date without needing technical skills. Platforms like WordPress or Squarespace are great options.

✔️7. Show your calendar

Make sure your school’s calendar is easy to find. This helps everyone stay in the loop about events, holidays, and other important dates. You could have an interactive calendar on the homepage that lets people filter events by date or category.

✔️8. Celebrate student success

Create a section of your website dedicated to showcasing student achievements. This lets everyone see the awesome things your students are doing. You could feature profiles of outstanding students and their accomplishments.

✔️9. Add some flair

Use photos, videos, and other multimedia to make your website more interesting. This helps bring your school’s story to life and gives visitors a glimpse into campus life. Share photos from events, take people on a virtual tour, and include testimonials from students and parents.

✔️10. Get feedback and get better at it

Ask parents, students, and staff for feedback on your website. Use their suggestions to make it even better. Add a feedback form or survey to your site so people can easily share their thoughts. Then, review the responses regularly to see where you can make changes.

Eleven faculty in the MIT School of Architecture and Planning have been recognized with promotions for their significant contributions to the school, effective July 1. Five faculty promotions are in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning; four are in the Department of Architecture; and two are in the program in Media Arts and Sciences.

“Whether architects, urbanists, historians, artists, economists, or aero-astro engineers, they represent our school at its best, in its breadth of inquiry and in its persistence to improve, by design, the relationship between human beings and their environment,” says Hashim Sarkis, dean of the School of Architecture and Planning. “Collectively, they add considerable strength to our faculty.”

  • Department of Architecture

Azra Akšamija  has been promoted to full professor. An artist and architectural historian, she is the director of the Art, Culture, and Technology program. She also directs the Future Heritage Lab. Akšamija is the author of two books, and her artistic work has been exhibited at leading   international venues, including the Generali Foundation and Secession in Vienna; Biennials in Venice, Liverpool, Valencia, and Manila; Manifesta 7; museums of contemporary art in Zagreb, Belgrade, and Ljubljana; Sculpture Center and Queens Museum of Art in New York; the Royal Academy of Arts London; and Design Festivals in Milan, Istanbul, Eindhoven, and Amman.

Brandon Clifford has been promoted to associate professor with tenure. Clifford is the director and co-founder of Matter Design, which leverages ancient construction techniques to shape transformative architectural visions. Known for animating megalithic sculptures, he pioneers “projective archaeology,” merging historical events with imaginary futures. Clifford’s speculative works redefine architectural practice, paving the way for new constructive opportunities.

Timothy Hyde   has been promoted to full professor. Hyde is an historian of architecture whose research has expanded the understanding of the ways in which entanglements of architecture and law have shaped buildings and cities from the 18th century to the present. In numerous articles, and in books such as “Constitutional Modernism and Ugliness and Judgment,” he has explored buildings — and more recently building sites — in the Americas and in Europe to reveal the participation of architectural discourse in the legal formulation of social techniques of the modern city.

Lawrence “Larry” Sass has been promoted to full professor. Sass is a designer and researcher in the Department of Architecture at MIT. He is a pioneer within the field of design and digital fabrication for low-cost housing. He discovered a low-cost method of single-family home construction using computation and digital fabrication. The impact of his research has been knowledge construction related to the idea that digital fabrication can automate construction. His methods reduce the number of steps in the production of a home. He was the first to publish the idea of digitally fabricated wooden housing in 2006 and exhibited his idea at the Museum of Modern Art in 2008.

Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP)

devin michelle bunten  has been promoted to associate professor. Bunten is a teacher, writer, and urban economic theorist. Her research uses economic theory and empirical tools to study a range of urban topics, including gentrification and neighborhood change, restrictive zoning, and the white supremacy at the root of American housing.

Catherine D’Ignazio has been promoted to associate professor with tenure. D’Ignazio is a scholar, artist/designer, and “hacker momma” who focuses on feminist technology, data literacy, and civic engagement. She is the director of the Data + Feminism Lab, which uses data and computational methods to work toward gender and racial justice, particularly as they relate to space and place.

Jeffrey Levine has been promoted to associate professor of the practice. Involved in land-use planning on the local and regional level for 25 years, Levine is interested in how to apply best practices in theory and research in local and municipal settings. His research interests are in the areas where public finance, private equity, and land-use planning intersect, as well as how transportation, housing, and sustainability interact in small- to mid-sized cities and regions.

Elisabeth Reynolds has been promoted to professor of the practice. Reynolds’s research is focused on systems of innovation, manufacturing and industrial competitiveness, and regional economic development. Her recent academic and applied work has focused on growing innovative companies to scale, digital technology adoption, and inclusive growth.

Andres Sevtsuk has been promoted to associate professor with tenure. Sevtsuk is the head of the City Design and Development Group in DUSP and director of the City Form Lab. His research focuses on public qualities of cities, and on making urban environments more walkable, sustainable, and equitable, bridging the fields of urban design, spatial analytics, and mobility research. He is the author of the Urban Network Analysis framework and software tools, used by researchers and practitioners around the world to model pedestrian activity in cities and to study coordinated land use and transportation development in ways that reduce transportation carbon emissions.

Program in Media Arts and Sciences

Kent Larson has been promoted to professor of the practice. Larson is an architect, director of City Science at the MIT Media Lab, and co-director of the Norman Foster Institute on Sustainable Cities based in Madrid. His research is focused on urban and architectural design, urban modeling and simulation, transformable micro-housing, living laboratories, ultralight autonomous mobility, and algorithmic dynamic zoning.

Danielle Wood has been promoted to associate professor. Wood is the founding director of the Space Enabled Research group, which seeks to advance justice in Earth’s complex systems using designs enabled by space. Prior to serving on the faculty at MIT, Wood held positions at NASA Headquarters, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Aerospace Corp., Johns Hopkins University, and the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs.

DOD Awards $57 Million Grant to North Chicago School District 187 for Forrestal Elementary School at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois

The Department of Defense announced today the award of a $57,701,575 grant as the Federal share of a larger $72,126,969 project to North Chicago School District 187, from the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation that replaces Forrestal Elementary School at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois.

The project will address facility capacity and condition deficiencies that placed Forrestal Elementary School as the 68th school on the 2019 Deputy Secretary of Defense "Public Schools on Military Installations Priority List" (Priority List).  Upon completion, 580 kindergarten through fifth grade students will be supported through the project.

Funding for this grant is provided under the Department's Public Schools on Military Installations Program.  In making these funds available, the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation must give priority consideration to military installations that have schools with the most serious capacity and facility condition deficiencies, as determined by the Priority List.

A multi-disciplined Federal Evaluation Team, with representatives from the Assistant Secretaries of the Air Force, Army, Navy, and the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation reviewed the school project to ensure the award appropriately addresses the noted capacity and facility condition deficiencies.

In correcting the identified facility condition and capacity issues at Forrestal Elementary School, this grant keeps faith with service members, improves the quality of education for defense-connected students, aids in the recruitment and retention of vital skills at Naval Station Great Lakes, and enhances partnerships between the communities and the installation.

Why Schools Are Racing to Ban Student Phones

As the new school year starts, a wave of new laws that aim to curb distracted learning is taking effect in Indiana, Louisiana and other states.

Cellphones have become a school scourge. More than 70 percent of high school teachers say student phone distraction is a “major problem,” according to a survey this year by Pew Research .

That’s why states are mounting a bipartisan effort to crack down on rampant student cellphone use. So far this year, at least eight states have passed laws, issued orders or adopted rules to curb phone use among students during school hours.

The issue isn’t simply that some children and teenagers compulsively use apps like Snap, TikTok and Instagram during lessons, distracting themselves and their classmates. In many schools, students have also used their phones to bully, sexually exploit and share videos of physical attacks on their peers.

But cellphone restrictions can be difficult for teachers to enforce without schoolwide rules requiring students to place their phones in lockers or other locations.

Now state lawmakers, along with some prominent governors , are pushing for more uniform restrictions in public schools.

Certification and Non-Discretion: A Guide to Protecting the 2024 Election

  • February 12, 2024

In the wake of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, lawmakers and advocates focused significant attention towards reforming the Electoral Count Act—an 1887 law that governs the counting of Electoral College votes in Congress. After almost two years, Congress passed reforms to the Act that will make it more difficult for partisan actors to manipulate the outcome of future presidential elections. While this achievement is no doubt critical to prevent another insurrection, partisan attacks on election outcomes remain most likely to occur at the state and local level where the bulk of election administration takes place, long before Congress meets to ratify the Electoral College results. The 2022 election cycle previewed one such attack with alarming frequency: Rogue officials in several states refused to certify election results or attempted to otherwise interfere with certification—the statutory process by which election officials attest to the accuracy and completeness of election results.

While efforts to impede certification are not new, never before have they been deployed on such a large and coordinated scale. For this reason, little academic attention has been paid to the mechanics of state certification frameworks. This Article fills that gap to demonstrate why, and how, state certification frameworks can combat the ongoing threats against them. It begins by providing a detailed overview of how election certification works and how recent attacks on the process have targeted and disrupted certification using false claims of widespread election fraud. It then delves into the rich but often overlooked history of certification as a non-discretionary duty to demonstrate that those attacks flouted hundreds of years of well-established American legal history; recognizing that discretion created opportunities for crises and election fraud, early courts and legislatures purposefully shaped certification into a mandatory, non-discretionary duty. The Article concludes with a roadmap for election officials, candidates, and advocates to resolve future attacks on the certification process in eight key battleground states likely to play significant roles in the 2024 election cycle.

There are 8 million teens eligible to vote. These high school students are trying to make sure more do.

New Voters team members pose for a photo

Every year, Jessie Cai would shadow her mom on “take your kid to work day.” At the Maryland Social Security office, where her mom was a systems analyst, she was struck by the lack of Asian American faces in the room. “I walked around and got the distinct impression that not many people in public service looked like me or my mom,” said Cai, a 17-year-old rising senior.

That experience set her on a mission to understand Asian American civic engagement. In 2023, she joined  New Voters , an organization that helps high schoolers host voter registration drives. A consequential Maryland primary election was on the horizon, and she wanted to make sure young people — including the Asian Americans in her community — made their voices heard. “In Maryland, you can pre-register to vote at age 16, so I knew we could cast a wider net to register younger students,” she said.

Collin Wang, right, hosted five voter registration drives at his high school in Pennsylvania.

New Voters paired Cai with a mentor, who gave her step-by-step guidance for hosting a registration drive. Cai set up meetings with school administrators, convinced her statistics teacher to sponsor her club and partnered with the National Social Studies Honor Society to set up the weeklong initiative in April. She and her friends tabled outside of the cafeteria, where they handed out doughnuts to students who dropped by to learn more about voting.

In the end, she managed to register 186 students. “We drove home the point that voting is the best way to hold people in power accountable,” she said. “We reminded them that we take our right to vote for granted. It’s a privilege that other teens around the world sometimes don’t get.”

This is how New Voters, a nonpartisan nonprofit, operates — by connecting high school students passionate about civic engagement to the resources they need to galvanize their peers. Founder Jahnavi Rao, 24, registered 85% of eligible voters at her high school as a senior in 2017. Soon after, high schoolers across the country were reaching out to her to ask how they can do the same.

Since 2018, the organization has registered over 80,000 high schoolers to vote across 400 high schools in 39 states. Each election, the organization builds on itself — New Voters has worked with over 2,000 high school student drive leaders and volunteers, who then go on to mentor new recruits.

“We’re a youth-led, issues-first organization,” Rao said. “When we talk to students, we always lead with, ‘What do you care about?’ That’s the best practice for canvassing across the board, because young people care so much. It’s just a matter of tying that care to voting.”

Amplifying high school voices in politics

In the 2022 midterm elections,  12% of ballots  were cast by young adults ages 18-29, even though they make up approximately  18%  of the electorate.

However, these numbers have been  trending upward  in recent years. According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University, Gen Z voters  turned out at higher rates  than previous generations during their first midterm elections in 2022.  Fifty-one percent of voters ages  18-24 are expected to vote this November.

One way to engage the  8 million  youth who are newly eligible to vote this year is to appeal to the issues they are  more likely to care  about: the climate crisis, gun violence and racism, said Rao.

Jessie Cai holds a sign that reads, "Register to Vote"

Another key factor in youth voter turnout is ease of access to the ballot box. States that  lowered barriers to voting  by allowing same-day voter registration and student IDs as documentation had much higher rates of voting in 2022.

Michael Hanmer, a professor of government and politics and the director of the Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement at the University of Maryland, noted that about  39% of high school graduates  don’t go on to attend college. He emphasized the benefits of registering students during high school as soon as they turn voting age. “After high school, disruptions in life can make it more difficult to register,” he said. “If you build habits of civic engagement earlier while students are in their home communities, voting is much more likely to stick.”

Hanmer believes that voting is culture-based, and that school administrations, teachers and students can all take part in building a voting-positive culture. “Schools as an institution can play a large role in encouraging civic engagement by working with organizations like New Voters that train students to build cultural roots and transfer their skills to incoming students,” he said.

Cai’s mentor, Collin Wang, hosted five drives to register more than 300 students at his high school in Wexford, Pennsylvania, before becoming a New Voters mentor. He says one of the greatest challenges his mentees have faced is convincing school administrators to get on board with the drives. Some principals weren’t keen on supplying lists of eligible voters; others were hesitant about being accused of partisanship. In these instances, Wang and New Voters provided message templates that explained the nonpartisan nature of their work and the state laws that  mandated  high schools host voter registration drives. In the end, administrators came around.

While Wang offers guidance to his mentees, he also lets students tailor their own approaches to registering their peers. “We want to give the students their independence because each school is different,” Wang said. “The students know what strategies will work best at their schools.”

Building a coalition around high school civic engagement

Over the past year, the work of New Voters has expanded beyond school drives. In early 2022, the organization launched the New Voters Research Network, which matches high school students with university and nonprofit researchers and trains them to develop a study on civic engagement. “When students present their projects to professors, they’re blown away at the impact and quality of the research that high school students can produce,” said Sydney Fahn, the director of the initiative. Currently, the network is running around a dozen research projects.

Sydney Fahn presents her New Voters Research Network results to the Maryland Civic Education and Engagement Leadership Summit in April.

For his project, Wang reached out to all 600 Pennsylvania public high school principals to analyze which messages received the most engagement. While his team is still waiting on the results, Wang is confident the research network will fill an important knowledge gap. “There’s really no reported information on the potential of high school civic engagement,” he said. “I hope all these findings could lead to change-making policies in the future.”

After establishing the research network, Rao shifted her attention to the November election. In February 2023, she organized a virtual listening tour of 40 organizations in the high school space — from other voter-focused initiatives like My School Votes  to general youth nonprofits like the YMCA and Scouting America — to ask them about whether they were involved in voter registration efforts. She found two common sentiments among the groups: One, there wasn’t enough data available on how to increase voter registration, and two, there wasn’t enough collaboration among high school-serving organizations. “I had an idea — what if we could bring together everybody who’s working with high schoolers to the table, whether they’re state-based, county-based, national or issue-based, to share best practices and build trust?” Rao said.

This led to the group’s latest project, the  New Voters Collaborative,  which brings 30 high school-serving organizations together for monthly meetings to discuss issues like how to encourage voting in high school civics classes and write op-eds for local papers. “We’re building out a map of where each organization works, where the gaps are and supplementing the schools that need resources,” she said. “The ultimate goal of the collaborative is to support voter registration at every high school in the country.”

With the general election approaching, New Voters is targeting 400 drives and 40,000 new registrations across the swing states of Pennsylvania and Arizona. Katie Walters, a high school government teacher in Pennsylvania and a New Voters faculty adviser, said her students began strategizing as early as this spring, tabling during graduation rehearsals and planning homeroom class visits in the fall. “We have students go into every classroom and explain how to register,” Walters said. “A grassroots, student-to-student interaction is key.”
