Random Color Generator

Use this color generator (a.k.a. colour generator) to randomly pick a color from a color palette. Pick a color at random from the whole color wheel, or from limited palettes of distinct ones (red or blue, red or black, primary and secondary colors only, etc.). Pick 1, 2, 3, 4, or more random colors at once.

    Using the random color generator

To randomly generate a color (or 'colour' in British English) simply load this page. Press the "Pick a Random Color" button if you want the random color generator to produce another color for you. Our software uses a strong random number generator to produce the values of red, green, and blue that comprise each color. The output is the color, visualized, and its unique code in HEX, RGB and HSL.

If you want to pick more than one colour simply enter the number required in the first field. For example, to pick two random colors, enter "2". To pick three random colors, enter "3".

If using the random color wheel to generate distinct unique colors i.e. for players in a game, first input the number of players in the first field, then select an appropriate color palette. The color generator supports randomly choosing between red and blue, red and black, and black and white. Additionally you can use the 3-color wheel consisting of the three primary colors ( red , yellow , blue ), the 6-color wheel which has the three secondary colors ( orange , green , violet ) on top of these, or the 12-color wheel which contains the six tertiary ones in addition to the primary and secondary ones. Ideally, use a palette with as many colors as the number of unique ones that you need, or slightly more. The maximum supported number of unique colors is twelve, regardless from which palette they are being picked.

What are HEX, RGB, and HSL colors?

These are various systems for presenting colors in a technical and uniquely identifiable way. Three of these are supported in our random color picker:

  • HEX is just a group of six hexadecimal digits and is a representation often used in web design. For example, the HEX code for the color black is #000000 while the HEX code for a color in the purple range is #8f0f8d.
  • RGB stands for "Red, Green, Blue" and mostly applies to digital displays, computer monitors, television screens and so on. A color written in RGB consists of three numbers, each signifying the amount of red, green and blue light that needs to be mixed in to produce the desired end color.
  • HSL stands for "Hue, Saturation, Lightness" which is an alternative way of encoding colors. Roughly speaking, hue refers to the part of the light spectrum (0-360°), saturation to its intensity (0-1, 0-100%), and lightness to its brightness (0-1, 0-100%).

Our random color generator will output the randomly chosen color in all three systems , for your convenience.

How many colors does the random color picker choose from?

As colour is simply visible light at a certain frequency, there are, for practical purposes, an infinite number of colors since the frequency range can be divided almost infinitely. The human eye is pretty good at what it does and can distinguish between about 10 million colors [1] . In theory, we could draw a random color from that infinity.

However, most modern screens and monitors can reproduce over 16 million colors and so this is also the range of colors our color generator picks between. It's virtual "color wheel" consists of 16,777,216 colors, to be precise.

    How the color generator works

The basis of the functionality is a random number generator which produces random numbers in a specified range which depends on the selected color palette. If the entire colour wheel is specified then it produces numbers from the entire range of each of the hex triplets which are six-digit hexadecimal numbers used in computing applications to represent colors (e.g. HTML colors, CSS colors, SVG, and various other image formats). Since the numbers are picked at random the end result is that it functions as a color randomizer, so basically it is picking colors at random.

The randomness of the RNG means that there is equal probability of picking any of the possible colors. As result, the color generator is unbiased in its selection of a random color from the palette.

Random Color

What is random color generator.

A random color generator is a tool that creates colors in an unpredictable and random fashion. It finds utility in a range of creative and design scenarios, including web design, graphic design, and art. Instead of manually hand-picking colors, a random color generator swiftly offers a diverse array of colors for various purposes.

Red, green, and blue (RGB), HEX and Hue, Saturation, Lightness (HSL) values are typically randomised as part of these generators' operation. Additionally, some generators could enable users specify special standards or limitations, like limiting the colour palette's range or adjusting the level of unpredictability. The generated colours can be shown using several colour schemes or formats, such as hexadecimal colour codes (red is represented by #FF0000, for example).

Let's have a look at what RGB, HEX and HSL are:

RGB, an acronym for "Red, Green, Blue," primarily pertains to digital displays, such as computer monitors and television screens. Within the RGB model, a color is defined through three numerical values, each denoting the proportion of red, green, and blue light needed to create the desired end color.

HEX serves as a format composed of six hexadecimal digits, commonly utilized in the realm of web design. For example, in this format, the color black is represented as #000000, while a shade within the purple spectrum might be symbolized as #8f0f8d.

HSL stands for "Hue, Saturation, Lightness," which offers an alternate approach to represent colors. To simplify, hue corresponds to the segment of the light spectrum (ranging from 0 to 360°), saturation indicates the intensity (measured from 0-1 or 0-100%), and lightness represents the brightness (also measured from 0-1 or 0-100%).

How does the Random Color Generator work?

To get a sample of your target color, simply click on “Generate Color” and you will obtain a code that would be in alphabets or numbers as the "random color". This free online color generator will generate a random code of your target color and showcase it on the screen.

Why use Random Color Generator?

Random color generators comes in handy for developers while developing websites or applications by adding a variety of visual interests and designs to make them look more aesthetic and enticing. These generators are also helpful in generating a set of color themes that work well together.

Random color generators are often used to test the robustness of a design. It allows developers to test their designs with different color combinations and by creating random color effects. This tool is also helpful for presenting statistical data more aesthetically by using unique color codes that make it easily readable.

Random color generators are commonly used in design for tasks like:

  • Creating color schemes: Designers can use random colors as a starting point for creating unique and visually appealing color palettes.
  • A/B testing: Randomly assigning different colors to elements on a website or app to test which color performs better in terms of user engagement or conversion rates.
  • Artistic inspiration: Artists and illustrators might use random colors to spark their creativity and experiment with unconventional color combinations.
  • Randomized data visualization: In data visualization, random colors can be used to assign colors to data points or categories when there is no specific order or meaning to the colors.

These generators can be found as online color generators, or integrated into design software and development libraries. They provide a quick and convenient way to explore color possibilities and can be a helpful resource in the creative process.

Generate a Random Color

There are a variety of reasons for generating random colors. One may want to generate colorful backgrounds or foregrounds, they might be looking for fun color palettes in which to design their next project, and one might be playing around with various styles of geometric art and wants some more interesting shapes.

For these reasons I have written a small tool that generates random colors. This tool is easy to use and doesn't require downloading any additional software.

To use the tool, simply click on the big "Generate" button repeatedly, until you find a color you like.

Once you like a color, select and copy its value from the column on the right, in the color space of your choice (currently supports Hex, RGB, RGBA, CMYK, HSL, HSV, LAB and more.)

The Algorithm

Random rgb color.

To generate a random RGB color, first generate a random number between 0 and 255.

In JavaScript, this can be done by using the Math.random() function which returns a random number between 0 (inclusive) and 1 (exclusive). We then multiply this number by 256 to get a number between 0 (inclusive) and 256 (exclusive). For example, if the number generated is 0.1, the resulting number will be 25.6. Next, we need to convert this number to an integer value. To do this, we use the Math.floor() function. This function rounds down the number to the nearest integer. For example, if the number is 25.6, the result will be 25.

Let this be the value of the Red channel of the color in RGB Color Space.

Generate 2 more random integers between 0 and 255 and make them the Green and Blue channel values respectively.

This gives us 3 numbers in total and therefore the RGB color.

Random Hex (Hexadecimal) Color

First, generate a random RGB color as described above.

Then, convert each channel's integer value into a 2 character hexadecimal number (if it's a single character number, prepend a "0") and concatenate them to form the random hexadecimal color value.

For example, if the Red channel value is 25, the Green channel value is 255, and the Blue channel value is 7, the hexadecimal color value would be #19FF07.

Tints and Shades

Tints and Shades are colors that are used to lighten or darken other colors.

The purpose of adding a tint or shade is to make the color more pleasant, either lighter or darker. This can be done by adding white (tint) or black (shade) to the color.

Our tool automatically adds tints and shades to the randomly generated color, so you don't have to worry about it!

P.S. If you want more control, you can check out our other tool: the RGBA Color Picker . With the color picker, you can choose any color you want and get tints and shades for that specific color.

If no colors are locked Colormind will generate color palettes at random.

If you have a specific starting color in mind, pick that color and lock it. The location of the color does matter, so experiment with different placements.

If you have two complementary colors, try placing them at the opposite ends of the palette. Colormind will tend to generate nice intermediate values.

If you want more variety try placing contrasting colors closer together, colormind will then tend to create triadic and other more complex color schemes.

You will get to see the name of the color, the hex color code for the color, and the RGB color code. Which of these will be more useful to you will depend on why you need the random color, but you can use any of them depending on your needs.

The default is to display a single random color, but you can choose to generate up to 50 colors depending on the number of colors your want to see. Once you choose the optimum number of colors to be displayed each time, all you need to do is to click on the generate button, and the random different colors will instantly appear. It really is that simple.

While you likely found the random color generator for a specific reason, there are actually a number of different reasons people come to this website to use it. We've listed a few of the more common ways people use this random color picker and we hope that by reading through them you may find some other uses for it that you may have never before considered.

Artistic Inspiration

Sometimes it's helpful to have some inspiration to get the creative juices flowing. A wonderful way to do this is to look through random colors. Since the random color picker will choose the colors randomly, you have no idea what color it will choose. This unknown can be beneficial as it will help you look at the color in a different way than if you were specifically looking for it. The randomness can inspire you to look at the color in a different way and possibly help inspire you to use it in a way that you'd never considered in the past.

Artistic Challenge

It's also possible to use the random color generator to artistically challenge yourself. For example, you could generate a single random color and then use that as the main color in an artistic project. If you want even more of an artistic challenge, you could use the random color picker to choose five or more different random colors and force yourself to incorporate all of them into your project. There are a large number of ways you can adjust this idea to your specific needs, but having to use random colors creates the opportunity for you to expand your artistic repertoire as it's likely you'll be given colors you wouldn't necessarily choose on your own.

There's something tremendously relaxing about looking at random colors. Don't believe us? Give yourself five minutes to use the random color picker to see how relaxing it can be. It's incredible how relaxing it can be and how far your mind will wander as you do it. If you're looking for a wonderful way to unwind and relax at the end of the day or before bed, using the random color generator can be an unexpectedly good way to do this.

Color Refresh

If you're painting a room or need to choose a color for a project, it can sometimes be difficult to make the final choice. This is especially true if you have been looking at the same colors for a long period of time. Using this random color tool can help refresh your mind and help you ultimately choose the best color. By having random colors displayed, your mind is able to break away from the colors you've been spending so much time with allowing you to look at them from a fresh perspective. You might even be surprised by the random color picker and find a color that works that you hadn't been considering.

We're quite interested in knowing why you made your way to this random color generator and how exactly you use it. The better we understand how people are using this tool, the more opportunities we have to make improvements to it to make it more useful for everyone who comes by. If you're using the random color picker in a way not mentioned above, please take a few minutes to contact us and explain how you use it so we can share it with others. If you have ideas on how to make it better or have issues that you would like to see changed, we'd love to hear them as well. We hope to make this the best random color generator on the Internet and to do that, we'd love to get your help.

Color-assignment-generator, how to get it.

Run npm install color-assignment-generator

Include the following in your file: var myColorGenerator = require('color-assignment-generator')

How to Use It

To get new RGB color use the getColor() method. This will return an object with keys r , g , and b , whose values are the corresponding RGB values.

If you are worried about loosing your place in color assignment if/when your application stops running, call the getSavedValues() method. This method returns a dictionary that you may save in a persistant store.

When your program resumes running, simply pass the saved object to the setSavedValues(savedDict) method. It is not advised to use this method to adjust settings manually, as values not generated with the algorithm and it's starting values can yield undefined behavior.

If you want to allow more or fewer colors before repitition of colors begins, use the setMinimumDifference(newMin) , passing a new number.

Color Mixer

What is color mixer.

Color mixer or Color Blender is one of many browser tools available on the ColorDesigner website. It allows users to blend two or more colors in different quantities and see the color that the mixture will result in after blending as well as the proportions and colors used to create it. In addition to displaying the resulting color, the Color Mixer also allows the user to display and use colors in different modes such as HLC, HSL, and LAB as well as RGB and LRGB.

Color Mixer page greets the user with a basic selection of primary and secondary colors which the user can then mix and blend freely as they see fit. Start by choosing colors that you want to blend. You can either chose your colors from the already existing shades offered on the website or add your own custom color that you created. Once you have all the colors that you want to mix, add each color in the desired quantity. The resulting color will be displayed along with the proportions of colors used for the mixture and keep changing based on the colors that the user adds. Keep mixing colors until you are satisfied with the result. Your color will also be displayed in different modes and formats, so you can easily recreate them at a later point in time.

Custom Colors

Users can add custom colors of their choosing by using either the Color Picker which will display the color palette and allow the user to choose the desired color by clicking on it from the color wheel, or by entering either the colors Hex Code, the RGB decimal code, or the values of the hue, saturation, and brightness. Additionally, the user can swap to the swatches tab which will, in turn, display the color swatches for both primary and secondary basic colors. From there, once the user settles on the basic color, he or she will be able to pick one of the many shades of the desired color which will be displayed on the screen. Once the user is happy with their choice, they can confirm their selection, and their color will be added to the main color selection from which they can decide on the mixing quantity.

The four main types of color palettes are monochromatic, analogous, complementary, and triadic. These categories are based on how colors are chosen and combined according to their positions on the color wheel, each offering a different approach to creating color harmony and visual interest.

A color palette consists of a curated set of colors selected to be used together for a design or art project. It typically includes primary and secondary colors and provides specific values for each color, such as HEX codes, RGB values, or CMYK values, to ensure accurate reproduction across different mediums.

The seven color schemes include monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split-complementary, triadic, tetradic (or double-complementary), and square. Each scheme utilizes colors in specific ways based on their positions on the color wheel to create visually appealing and harmonious combinations.

Choosing a color palette involves considering the project's purpose, desired emotional impact, and the target audience. You can play around with different color schemes using Pixelied, applying principles of color theory.

A color palette typically includes three to nine main colors. The range allows for a primary color to dominate, secondary colors to support, and an additional color or two for accents. The exact number can vary depending on the project's complexity and design needs.

The most common color scheme is the complementary color scheme, which pairs colors opposite each other on the color wheel. It is popular for its strong visual contrast and the ability to make elements stand out, ideal for creating focus and visual interest in a design.

Pixelied is the best color palette maker for generating color schemes for your brand or project. It allows for quick generation, customization, and sharing of color palettes, making it a favorite among designers and artists.

Pixelied’s color combo generator is compatible with mobile and desktop devices. It also works on all popular browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari.

How to cite ChatGPT

We, the APA Style team, are not robots. We can all pass a CAPTCHA test , and we know our roles in a Turing test . And, like so many nonrobot human beings this year, we’ve spent a fair amount of time reading, learning, and thinking about issues related to large language models, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-generated text, and specifically ChatGPT . We’ve also been gathering opinions and feedback about the use and citation of ChatGPT. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and shared ideas, opinions, research, and feedback.

In this post, I discuss situations where students and researchers use ChatGPT to create text and to facilitate their research, not to write the full text of their paper or manuscript. We know instructors have differing opinions about how or even whether students should use ChatGPT, and we’ll be continuing to collect feedback about instructor and student questions. As always, defer to instructor guidelines when writing student papers. For more about guidelines and policies about student and author use of ChatGPT, see the last section of this post.

Quoting or reproducing the text created by ChatGPT in your paper

If you’ve used ChatGPT or other AI tools in your research, describe how you used the tool in your Method section or in a comparable section of your paper. For literature reviews or other types of essays or response or reaction papers, you might describe how you used the tool in your introduction. In your text, provide the prompt you used and then any portion of the relevant text that was generated in response.

Unfortunately, the results of a ChatGPT “chat” are not retrievable by other readers, and although nonretrievable data or quotations in APA Style papers are usually cited as personal communications , with ChatGPT-generated text there is no person communicating. Quoting ChatGPT’s text from a chat session is therefore more like sharing an algorithm’s output; thus, credit the author of the algorithm with a reference list entry and the corresponding in-text citation.

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

You may also put the full text of long responses from ChatGPT in an appendix of your paper or in online supplemental materials, so readers have access to the exact text that was generated. It is particularly important to document the exact text created because ChatGPT will generate a unique response in each chat session, even if given the same prompt. If you create appendices or supplemental materials, remember that each should be called out at least once in the body of your APA Style paper.

When given a follow-up prompt of “What is a more accurate representation?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that “different brain regions work together to support various cognitive processes” and “the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors” (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

Creating a reference to ChatGPT or other AI models and software

The in-text citations and references above are adapted from the reference template for software in Section 10.10 of the Publication Manual (American Psychological Association, 2020, Chapter 10). Although here we focus on ChatGPT, because these guidelines are based on the software template, they can be adapted to note the use of other large language models (e.g., Bard), algorithms, and similar software.

The reference and in-text citations for ChatGPT are formatted as follows:

  • Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
  • Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023)

Let’s break that reference down and look at the four elements (author, date, title, and source):

Author: The author of the model is OpenAI.

Date: The date is the year of the version you used. Following the template in Section 10.10, you need to include only the year, not the exact date. The version number provides the specific date information a reader might need.

Title: The name of the model is “ChatGPT,” so that serves as the title and is italicized in your reference, as shown in the template. Although OpenAI labels unique iterations (i.e., ChatGPT-3, ChatGPT-4), they are using “ChatGPT” as the general name of the model, with updates identified with version numbers.

The version number is included after the title in parentheses. The format for the version number in ChatGPT references includes the date because that is how OpenAI is labeling the versions. Different large language models or software might use different version numbering; use the version number in the format the author or publisher provides, which may be a numbering system (e.g., Version 2.0) or other methods.

Bracketed text is used in references for additional descriptions when they are needed to help a reader understand what’s being cited. References for a number of common sources, such as journal articles and books, do not include bracketed descriptions, but things outside of the typical peer-reviewed system often do. In the case of a reference for ChatGPT, provide the descriptor “Large language model” in square brackets. OpenAI describes ChatGPT-4 as a “large multimodal model,” so that description may be provided instead if you are using ChatGPT-4. Later versions and software or models from other companies may need different descriptions, based on how the publishers describe the model. The goal of the bracketed text is to briefly describe the kind of model to your reader.

Source: When the publisher name and the author name are the same, do not repeat the publisher name in the source element of the reference, and move directly to the URL. This is the case for ChatGPT. The URL for ChatGPT is https://chat.openai.com/chat . For other models or products for which you may create a reference, use the URL that links as directly as possible to the source (i.e., the page where you can access the model, not the publisher’s homepage).

Other questions about citing ChatGPT

You may have noticed the confidence with which ChatGPT described the ideas of brain lateralization and how the brain operates, without citing any sources. I asked for a list of sources to support those claims and ChatGPT provided five references—four of which I was able to find online. The fifth does not seem to be a real article; the digital object identifier given for that reference belongs to a different article, and I was not able to find any article with the authors, date, title, and source details that ChatGPT provided. Authors using ChatGPT or similar AI tools for research should consider making this scrutiny of the primary sources a standard process. If the sources are real, accurate, and relevant, it may be better to read those original sources to learn from that research and paraphrase or quote from those articles, as applicable, than to use the model’s interpretation of them.

We’ve also received a number of other questions about ChatGPT. Should students be allowed to use it? What guidelines should instructors create for students using AI? Does using AI-generated text constitute plagiarism? Should authors who use ChatGPT credit ChatGPT or OpenAI in their byline? What are the copyright implications ?

On these questions, researchers, editors, instructors, and others are actively debating and creating parameters and guidelines. Many of you have sent us feedback, and we encourage you to continue to do so in the comments below. We will also study the policies and procedures being established by instructors, publishers, and academic institutions, with a goal of creating guidelines that reflect the many real-world applications of AI-generated text.

For questions about manuscript byline credit, plagiarism, and related ChatGPT and AI topics, the APA Style team is seeking the recommendations of APA Journals editors. APA Style guidelines based on those recommendations will be posted on this blog and on the APA Style site later this year.

Update: APA Journals has published policies on the use of generative AI in scholarly materials .

We, the APA Style team humans, appreciate your patience as we navigate these unique challenges and new ways of thinking about how authors, researchers, and students learn, write, and work with new technologies.
