Cricket is a game between two teams of eleven players. Each team bats once to score as many runs as possible, while the other team bowls to restrict the number of runs scored. Cricket is usually played on a circular or an oval field with a pitch placed in the middle of the field. The pitch has three sticks at each end, known as the wickets. The pitch is 22 yards in length. The bowler bowls from one end of the pitch while the batsman (striker) tries to hit the ball from the other end. There is another batsman (non-striker) waiting at the bowler’s end. The batsman scores the run by hitting the ball. The aim of the bowler is to get the batsman out while giving away the least runs possible. At the same time, the batsmen want to make as many runs as possible. The team which makes the most runs wins.

The popularity of sports in India is largely driven by Cricket. Cricket is a game that has its own unique appeal as it is played within the rules and laws, and it creates the Spirit of the Game among the players. Any action that indicates any abuse or unfair play causes injury to the game itself. Playing a cricket match is a very enjoyable experience which involves a great deal of physical activities.

The Popularity of Cricket in India

Cricket is the most popular sport in India and has a large fan following. Television and media coverage has also contributed to its popularity. One hundred and fifty years ago, the Parsis, who were the first Indian cricketers, had to struggle to find an open space to play a cricket match. Now, the global market is supporting cricket players. Currently, the Indian players are the best paid and are supported with all facilities so they can play the game at their best.

Children from small villages and towns can easily watch cricket matches on television and they imitate their heroes. This has also increased the youth’s love and passion for cricket. That’s why we can see that in every street, children play cricket matches on Sundays. Early exposure to cricket is a great help in the making of a successful player. We never know who will be the next Kapil Dev or Sachin Tendulkar.

“Cricket to us was more than play; it was a worship in the summer sun.” ~ Edmund Charles Blunden

Two things have made their place in the heart of Indians forever; Shahrukh Khan (The King Khan of Bollywood) and the sport of cricket. In our country, cricket is a religion and players like Sachin Tendulkar are considered as god. This game is enjoyed by small children as well as office going adults. It never fails to amuse us. You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

Cricket’s become more of a religion, where every house has a few members who just can’t get enough of the game. So, it’s really no surprise that teachers will ask the students to write an essay on cricket, as practice. Essay writing is an important skill students need to learn, so they can organize their thoughts and present them coherently. Cricket is a topic most students will love to write about, since they themselves will have so much to share! In this article, you can look at how to write an essay on Cricket in English, for classes 1,2 and 3, with increasing difficulty levels.

Remember these important tips before you write a paragraph on cricket:

  • Cricket is a sport that most people know and love. Therefore, give more weightage to the ‘feel’ of playing the game rather than obvious facts.
  • When writing short-form essays, keep the details about the sport very simple.
  • When wiring short essays concentrate on why cricket is your favorite game, merge the introduction and conclusion with the first and last paragraphs.
  • When writing a long-form essay, split the words into an introduction, the main body of the essay, and a conclusion.
  • Start the introduction with some simple facts about the game, and talk about relatable aspects in the body of the essay. Conclude with a summary of how cricket evolved.

The essay for class 1 and class 2 students are often in the form of one-line essays. These are easy to write and build the foundation for essay writing. Here is an example of a 10-line essay on cricket:

  • Cricket is truly the most popular sport in India, and is an outdoor game that is enjoyed by everyone.
  • The game is played by two teams of 11 players, each with a bat and a ball.
  • Cricket is usually played in a big playground. But people love it so much that small teams and groups play it on the roads and wherever there is enough space!
  • Cricket is also my favorite sport to watch. I always sit and watch cricket with my family.
  • In the evenings I go out to play cricket with my friends. We can play cricket all day without getting bored.
  • My favorite cricket player is Virat Kohli. He is inspiring and one of the best cricket players in the world.
  • In cricket, I am good at batting and bowling. I always get the first chance to bat when I play with my friends.
  • I got a cricket set for my birthday last year, and I clean it and take care of it every day.
  • It is everyone’s dream to become a top cricketer and play for the Indian cricket team.
  • Someday I am sure I will become the best cricketer in my school.

A small paragraph on cricket is a simple essay. Children can write about what makes cricket their favorite game and some general facts about the sport. Here is an example for a short cricket essay:

Cricket is my favorite sport in the world. It is played by everyone in my school and every school in the country. It is the most exciting game in the country, and everybody loves watching cricket matches. Indian people have so much zest for cricket that they can play it anywhere – in small fields, roads, gullies, and anywhere they can bowl and bat! I never get tired of playing cricket, and it is the only game we play after school and during the holidays.

Although cricket is the most beloved game in the country, its origins are in England. Two teams play the game with 11 players each. The team that wins the toss can then make the choice to bat or to bowl. Two players from the batting team are on the pitch while 11 players from the opposing team surround them in the field. People who play cricket outside the fields don’t always have 11 players each. When I play with my friends, the group splits into two teams. If only 8 friends show up to play, each team will have 4 boys.

To summarize, cricket is a game loved by children and adults alike. Whether it is played in a stadium or on the street, the thrill of the game is always high.

While writing long essays, it’s important to have the content pre-planned to maintain the narrative. Here is an example of a long paragraph essay on cricket for class 3:

If you live in India, chances are you are a huge cricket fan! No other game in the country is as loved, or no other sport is as popularly played as cricket. Despite originating in England, cricket found its home in modern-day India. This game was once played by high-ranking officials, expats, and royalty. Now it is the most played sport in stadiums, playgrounds, and even the local streets!

Cricket’s popularity in the media is also one of the reasons the game became so successful in the country. Every young boy, at some point, would have dreamed of becoming a cricket superstar who plays for the Indian cricket team. Not surprisingly, the competition to join the regional, state, and national teams is also high. All schools have cricket teams and cricket clubs that play in the Interschool competitions. Outstanding players also become little celebrities in schools, colleges, and institutions. Everybody loves the person in class who can play great cricket!

Coming to the game, cricket is played by two teams with 11 players each. The match is set in a large stadium, and the captain from each team steps forward for the coin toss. The winning team can choose to bat or to bowl. The batting team sets a score that the bowling team has to chase. The game is watched by thousands of spectators on the venue and millions more on TV. Over the years, cricket duration has changed from 50 overs to 20 overs.

The sport attracts many people and is loved by everyone. Children play it in the streets while grownups play it in the playgrounds. The game has almost a magical allure to people of all ages. Every time a match is going on, everybody wants to stay updated on the scores of their favorite team. Whether it is a victory or a loss, the fans take it personally. Families spend a lot of quality time together glued to the TV while kids get plenty of healthy exercise playing cricket outdoors. In the recent past, even women’s cricket teams have gained popularity showing just how much everybody loves it.

Cricket is a favorite essay topic among many students as it is a fun game they can relate to. By studying these essays, they can learn how to write about the game in the form of an interesting essay. The examples show how facts about the game can be combined with the perspective of the players to write a highly relatable essay.

Cricket is a game that is loved by all. An essay on this topic should cover basic facts about the game, and little details that people who have played the game can relate to. As an essay writing topic, cricket is a highly enjoyable topic, and the examples above give students a clear idea about how to write an essay that readers can enjoy.

This type of cricket match is played for the longest duration of time. It is played over a span of five days. It is played in innings and consists of a total of four innings. In each of these innings one team bats and the other bowls/ fields. Since test cricket is played for four innings, each team gets a chance to bat and bowl twice during the match. The team with the highest score in both the innings wins the game.

It is said that test cricket is the ultimate test of a team’s performance.

One Day International (ODI)

This match is played for a fixed number of overs between two teams of international status. The game is mostly limited to 50 overs per team. The team that bats first sets a target score. The other team chases the target. The team that manages high score among the two emerges winner. Each bowler in this cricket format is allowed to bowl for a maximum of 10 overs.

These matches are also referred to as Limited Over Internationals (LOI).

This is the shortest and most exciting cricket format. Each team plays for a total of 20 overs. The one with the highest score wins the game. All the other rules of the game are the same as the ODIs. Twenty20, also known as T20, has received immense appreciation owing to its short and crisp matches. The game begins and ends quickly and hence the players need to be on their toes throughout the match.

While most cricket fans follow all types of cricket tournaments, some are picky about certain formats and enjoy watching only those. There has been a growing inclination towards the Twenty 20 matches.

Difference Between Cricket and Football (And Some Similarities!)

While playing or watching various sports, it is natural for one to register differences or similarities among them. Some similarities and differences are subtle, while some are more prominent and the key distinguishers between the sports. Have you ever wondered if there are any similarities between cricket and football? Or what are the key factors that fundamentally separate football from cricket?

While you must be knowing the basics of both the games, the following article presents quite a few key differences between football and cricket while highlighting some similarities as well!

The Differences between Cricket and Football

1. popularity, playing countries, and viewership.

Football, also known as Soccer (mainly in America) or Association Football, is the most popular game going by the viewerships across the world. FIFA World Cup, the most prominent football tournament was followed by 3.5 billion fans in the year 2018. Almost all countries play football.

Cricket, the second most followed game has a vast global reach as well, but international cricket matches are played among a handful of countries.

At present, there are only 12 teams who have got the affiliation to play Test matches, while 20 countries play One-Day International matches. Though, the Twenty-20 format is gaining popularity and global reach,  as 85 countries play Twenty-20 games .

Table Tennis850 MillionAfrica, America, Asia, Europe.
Baseball500 MillionAmerica, Japan.

2. Ground Shape and Size

The size of the football field varies between 100-130 yards (90-120 meters) long and 50-100 yards (45-90 meters) wide. Irrespective of the size of the field, the penalty area or the box, where most of the action takes place, is 18 yards (16.46 meters) away from the center of the goal line, while the penalty spot is 12 yards (10.98 meters) from the goal.

The diameter of a cricket field varies between 137 meters and 150 meters as per the ICC Test Match Standard Playing Conditions (October 2014) Law 19.1 . The law states the distance from the boundary-to-boundary square of the pitch should be at least 137.16 meters, while the shorter of the two square boundaries cannot be less than 59.43 meters. The straight boundary at both ends of the pitch should be at least 64 meters. Also, the boundaries cannot exceed 82.29 meters from the center of the pitch.

3. Uniform and Color

In cricket, clothing includes a collared shirt with short or long sleeves depending on the climate or personal preference and full-length trousers, sun hat or cap, spiked shoes. The players can use a jumper or a pullover. The Test matches are played with white clothes, while limited over games are played with colorful clothes.

4 – Protective Equipment and Playing Gear

To play cricket, you primarily need a bat, a ball, and stumps, while football is played with a ball, bigger and softer compared to a cricket ball. In cricket, batsmen hit the ball with the wooden bat to score runs, while in football, the players score goals by pushing the ball into the goalpost using any body parts other than hands.

Difference in Material and Dimensions of the Ball used

The cricket balls are made from leather, Cork, and a stitching thread. For men’s Cricket, the diameter of a Cricket ball is between 7.13 cm (2.80 inches) to 7.29 cm (2.86 inches), and its circumference is between 22.4 cm (8.81 inches) to 22.9 cm (9 inches). It weighs between 155.9 grams to 163 grams.

Protective Equipment

5 – playing and scoring formats.

A typical football match is played in two halves of 45 minutes each. At the end of each half, a few minutes of stoppage time (injury time) is added. The team that posts the most goals at the end of the match wins the match.

In limited-over formats (50 overs in One-Day matches/20 overs in Twenty-20 matches), the team batting first posts some runs called as the target. If the other side achieves the target in the designated overs, then they win the match.

6 – The Rule of Substitutes

You must have noticed a substitute player in football scoring a goal, goalkeeping, or even captaining the side. In FIFA 2014 world cup final , Mario Gotze who was brought in as a substitute in the 88th minute scored the world championship-winning goal in the 113th minute.

7 – Red/Yellow Penalty Cards

A yellow card is used as a warning for minor misconduct, while a red card results in the player’s dismissal from the field of play, and the side is forced to play with a player less.  Also, if a player receives two yellow cards in one game, it is as good as receiving a red card.

What are the Similarities between Cricket and Football ?

Yes, there are a few similarities between the two sports. Cricket and Football are the two most popular sports in the world . Both are outdoor or field games.

Both are team games with 11 players a side actively playing in the match. Use of the toss, balls, substitute players, keepers (goalkeeper and wicketkeeper) who save or grab the ball using gloves are among the other similarities.

The referees in football are similar to umpires in cricket . In football, there is one referee and two assistant referees, while in cricket we have two field umpire and one television-umpire or the third umpire.

Final Thoughts

While the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar is treated like a god by cricket fans, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo have got incredible popularity and respect through football. Players like these contribute to the increase in the worldwide popularity of any sports to a great extent. No wonder these are the two most followed sports across the globe!

Afghanistan vs New Zealand: Why is Greater Noida stadium hosting a Test match?

Afghanistan vs New Zealand: Why is Greater Noida stadium hosting a Test match?

It's extremely distressing that no cricket could be played on two consecutive days, despite the absence of daytime rain on both days. This betrays a lack of foresight and absence of planning in hosting a Test match on a ground with such poor drainage facility, that too in the peak of monsoon. Authorities must take responsibility for this fiasco - as well as for the other shortcomings of the stadium - and carry out the upgrades. Test teams as well as every cricket lover deserve better.

Elm tree stands in way of redevelopment of Launceston's York Park stadium

By Ashleigh Barraclough

Topic: Local Government

A report to the council recommended the Dutch elm be removed and four other trees be planted nearby. ( ABC News: Morgan Timms )

A Launceston City Council motion to remove an old elm tree to make room for the redevelopment of the city's football and cricket stadium, York Park, has failed.

Some community members and councillors have argued the elm should be protected, while others say the redevelopment of the stadium should take precedence.

What's next?

The Department of State Growth says it is considering its options following the council decision, and construction timelines will need to be reviewed.

A decades-old elm tree standing in the way of an upgrade to Launceston's York Park stadium has led to an impasse within the local council over its removal.

The architects of the stadium redevelopment said the tree would need to go to build the new centre-west stand, which would provide additional spectator seating , change-room facilities, coaches' boxes, and media and broadcast facilities.

But at Thursday's council meeting, Launceston City councillors were split over the decision, meaning the motion to remove the tree failed.

As the developer, the Department of State Growth will need to appeal to the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) for a result.

The stadium hosts AFL and cricket matches, and will serve as the home ground for the Tasmania AFL team in 2028, alongside Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

If built, the proposed Macquarie Point stadium will become the side's home ground in the state's south.

Tree's arborist 'vexed'

The 17-metre-high tree is estimated to be 70 to 80 years old, with an arborist's report confirming it is "in good shape".

Internationally, elm species are considered at risk due to a fungal disease that has devastated populations. The disease has not yet been detected in Australia.

As the consulting arborist for the Launceston City Council, Frank Rosol from Australian Tree Care has cared for the elm for 12 years.

He would like to see an alternative solution found so the elm can remain in place.

"I'm a keen football supporter and I actually applaud that the stadium is being upgraded," he told councillors.

"It's vexing to me that that actually means, potentially, the removal of this particular specimen of elm tree."

He said York Park was originally intended as a stadium surrounded by gardens and trees, so the elm played a significant role in the stadium's heritage.

"If you have a chance to view the tree, you will just see how significant and valuable this tree actually is in its place," he said.

Rosie Mackinnon, co-chair of the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Garden History Society, agreed with Mr Rosol's comments.

"It creates a greening canopy, and I believe the council has a very high priority right now for its greening urban strategy," she said.

"This tree is part of our history."

Developers to face TASCAT after councillors split

The application to the council to remove the tree was brought by consultant ERA Planning and Environment, which is representing the Department of State Growth on the redevelopment.

"The application is supported by detailed studies, including heritage, site contamination and an arborist report," Patrick Carroll from ERA said at last week's council meeting.

He said the council's infrastructure and heritage teams had assessed the proposal and were supportive of the tree's removal.

"Any amendments, however, may jeopardise the project's timelines and may have funding implications," he said.

Under the proposal, four mature trees would be planted near the location of the removed elm.

The elm's wood would be reused on-site.

Councillor Alan Harris urged his colleagues to pass the motion so the architects of the redevelopment could proceed with certainty.

"If we're going to have the new stadium, the tree will have to go," he said.

Councillor Alex Britton said while it would be ideal to keep the tree and upgrade the stadium, he could not see that happening.

"I don't want to dismiss the importance of the tree or any tree," he said.

"However, to me, this investment in our cities is more important than this tree."

The motion to remove the tree was split down the middle, with five councillors to five, meaning an appeal with TASCAT will need to be lodged to continue.

A spokesperson for the department said it was considering its options following the council decision.

The Tasmanian and federal governments have each contributed $65 million for the redevelopment of York Park to increase the stadium's capacity by about 2,000 seats, make it more accessible to people with disabilities, and bring its facilities up to standard.

The department has raised concerns about budget and timeline blowouts to the $130 million redevelopment due to the delay.

Construction on the stadium was set to begin next month and finish by early 2027.
