Importance of Education Essay

Education is one of the key components for an individual’s success. It has the ability to shape one’s life in the right direction. Education is a process of imparting or acquiring knowledge, and developing the powers of reasoning and judgement. It prepares growing children intellectually for a life with more mature understanding and sensitivity to issues surrounding them. It improves not only the personal life of the people but also their community. Thus, one cannot neglect the significance of Education in life and society. Here, we have provided an essay on the Importance of Education. Students can use this essay to prepare for their English exam or as a speech to participate in the school competition.

Importance of Education

The importance of education in life is immense. It facilitates quality learning for people throughout their life. It inculcates knowledge, belief, skill, values and moral habits. It improves the way of living and raises the social and economic status of individuals. Education makes life better and more peaceful. It transforms the personality of individuals and makes them feel confident.

Well said by Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world”. To elaborate, it is the foundation of the society which brings economic wealth, social prosperity and political stability. It gives power to people to put their views and showcase their real potential. It strengthens democracy by providing citizens with the tools to participate in the governance process. It acts as an integrative force to foster social cohesion and national identity.

In India, education is a constitutional right of every citizen. So, people of any age group, religion, caste, creed and region are free to receive education. An educated person is respected everywhere and well-treated in society. As a kid, every child dreams of being a doctor, lawyer, engineer, actor, sportsperson, etc. These dreams can come true through education. So, investment in education gives the best return. Well-educated people have more opportunities to get a better job which makes them feel satisfied.

In schools, education is divided into different levels, i.e., preschool, primary, secondary and senior secondary. School education comprises traditional learning which provides students with theoretical knowledge. However, now various efforts are being made to establish inbuilt application-based learning by adding numerous experiments, practicals and extracurricular activities to the school curriculum. Students learn to read, write and represent their viewpoints in front of others. Also, in this era of digital Education, anyone can easily access information online at their fingertips. They can learn new skills and enhance their knowledge.

Steps Taken By Government To Promote Education

Education is evidently an important aspect that no government can ignore in order to ensure the equitable development of a nation. Unfortunately, some children still do not have access to education. The Government has thereby taken initiatives to improve education quality and made it accessible to everyone, especially the poor people.

The Government passed the Right to Education Act 2009 (RTE Act 2009) on 4 August 2009. This Act came into effect on 1 April 2010, following which education has become the fundamental right of every child in India. It provides free and compulsory elementary education to children of the age group of 6-14 years in a neighbourhood school within 1 km, up to Class 8 in India. On similar lines, there are other schemes launched by the government, such as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan , Mid-Day Meal , Adult Education and Skill Development Scheme, National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme, National Program for Education of Girls at Elementary Education, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Scheme for Infrastructure Development in Minority Institutions, Beti Bachao , Beti Padhao, etc.

For our country’s growth, we require a well-educated population equipped with the relevant knowledge, attitude and skills. This can be achieved by spreading awareness about the importance of Education in rural areas. There is a famous saying that “If we feed one person, we will eliminate his hunger for only one time. But, if we educate a person, we will change his entire life”. Henceforth he will become capable of earning a livelihood by himself.

These ideas come from a variety of online sources and links have been provided in case you need to provide references in your essay .

This article lists ideas on the importance of education to a person’s life (Points 1 – 16) and to society (Points 17 – 27).

Importance of Education to a Person’s Life

1. education helps people out of poverty.

Poverty is linked to low education . Families that are poor are usually less educated than families that are rich. Plus, if you are born into a low educated poor family, chances are high that you too will end up low educated and poor.

One way poverty affects education is through the direct costs. Even when school is free, the costs of uniforms, travel, and so on can be very difficult for families to cover.

To escape the poverty trap cycle , people need to gain a higher education than their parents and find upwardly mobile employment (this means: jobs that help you get from the working class into the middle class).

Here’s some facts to back up this point.

A recent report found that people with a college education are statistically less likely to be in poverty. Of people over the age of 25, only 2% of college graduates were in poverty. That compares to 13% of high school graduates over 25.

2. Education helps People make More Money

Jobs that require a higher education are usually more highly paid than unskilled jobs. This is because the jobs are more difficult and require a more specialized skillset. If you get an education in a skill area where there is a shortage of available workers, your wages will increase.

To underscore this point, Brookings presented findings that show:

“An individual with a college degree is nearly nine times more likely to make over $100,000 than someone with only a high school diploma and 13 times more likely to make more than $200,000 per year.”

Today, jobs that are in demand, require a high education and pay quite well include:

  • Software developer (USD $101,000)
  • Health care administrator (USD $98,000)
  • Medical Technologist (USD $51,000)

3. Highly Educated People have a Better chance of Getting a Job

Jobs are not that easy to come by these days – even for people with degrees. But there’s statistically a higher chance of you getting a job if you have a higher education.

The 2017 report Education Pays: The Benefits of Higher Education for Individuals and Society found that people with higher education have lower rates of unemployment.

In 2015, younger people (ages 25 – 34) with bachelor’s degrees had an unemployment rate of 2.6%. High school graduates of the same age range had an unemployment rate of 8.1 percent.

That’s a huge difference that underscores the correlation between education and employability.

4. Highly Educated People are Statistically Healthier

Statistically, the higher your education, the healthier you are. This could potentially be due to a few factors including:

  • Stable jobs with regular hours allow you to plan exercise;
  • Cultural differences between working-class and middle-class people;
  • More money to participate in recreational activities.

Whatever the reason, the facts stand for themselves. One of the major facts is this:

In 2014, 26% of high school graduates smoked cigarettes. In the same year, only 8% of college graduates smoked cigarettes.

5. Highly Educated People Volunteer More

Educated people tend to do better when it comes to volunteering. The reasons for this may be very similar to the reasons for being more fit. Reasons could include:

  • Stable jobs with regular hours allow time to plan regular volunteering hours;
  • Highly educated people are less likely to work two jobs;
  • People who are well educated have more money to travel to and from their volunteering locations.

Again, it’s a good idea to back this claim up with some facts.

In 2015, 39% of college graduates reported that they volunteered that year. Among high school graduates, it was just 16% who reported that they volunteered.

6. Education helps People make Better Decisions

We have already established that people with a higher education have more job security and more money.

The flow-on effect of this is that they can make better decisions.

When you are more certain that you have money coming in every week, you’ll be able to plan our your budget more. You’ll also have the money to make decisions about living in safer neighborhoods with more public services.

Furthermore, higher education usually teaches critical thinking skills . This means people who’ve been trained in critical thinking may have an advantage when making tough decisions. They will have the education to know how to handle complex decision-making processes.

7. Education helps People make Long-Term Decisions

Not only will highly educated people have the skillset to make tough decisions, they will also have the money to make long-term decisions.

If you have a stable job with a high income each month, you’re more likely to get a loan for a home. You also have the freedom to start investing into your retirement funds.

As you can see, the correlation between high education and high incomes has huge flow-on effects for quality of life.

8. Education can increase Social Status

An education from a respected educational institution can open lots of doors for you.

Many students from around the world flock to nations like the United Kingdom, United States and Australia to get degrees from top-ranking education nations.

Similarly, if you make it to a higher-ranking school or university such as Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, Oxford or Princeton you’ll get a lot of social status just for having attended the university.

Even at compulsory school age there are elite institutions. For example, the private school named Eton College in the UK is known for producing no less than 19 British Prime Minsters .

When you get social status from going to a good school or university, we say you have institutional or cultural capital .

This degree from a well-respected university may get you that job interview you were looking for. But, it could also get you social status amongst family, friends and – yes – potential future partners!

9. Education makes People better Conversationalists

Have you ever had a conversation with a person and they were just really interesting? They seemed to know a lot of things and be able to talk to you about anything.

Well, that person is likely very well educated.

In fact, we have some words to describe people who are well-educated in a broad range of topics. You could call them:

  • A renaissance man
  • A renaissance woman

There is also a type of education designed to help you become a polymath. It’s called a Liberal Education and you get it by doing a Liberal Arts Degree from a university.

10. Education helps People get Access to Important Information

In the dark ages in Europe very few people had the ability to read.

This meant that knowledge held in books was only available to very few people.

When people don’t have access to knowledge, they’re in a very vulnerable situation. They can’t educate themselves on important information and have a harder time making decisions.

Nowadays, most people in the developed world can read. This huge advance in education levels has enabled any of us to go out there and access information.

In fact, you’re doing that right now! Aren’t you glad you can read?

Educated people also have the knowledge about how to access important information. We’re taught at school about encyclopaedias and libraries. At university we’re taught about scholarly sources and how to access them .

Combine the ability to read with the skills to access information and anyone can help educate themselves on anything. You just need a basic level of education to get started!

11. Education enables People to Critically Analyze ideas

At school, you’re not just being taught facts.

You’re also being taught how to think.

This ability to think involves some pretty advanced strategies like:

  • Skepticism: The reluctance to believe something until you see the facts;
  • Critical Thinking : the ability to look at something from multiple perspectives;
  • Analytical Thinking : the ability to investigate something deeply to find answers.

With these fantastic skills, you can go a long way! You’re less likely to be tricked into believing something that’s not true. You’ll also be able to think things through and come to reasonable, rational conclusions.

12. Education can Help People (especially Women) become Independent and Powerful

Women’s education is a major focus of the United Nations.

This is because many women who are not educated are dependent on their families or husbands to make money.

When women become educated, they can become independent . They can work in better paid jobs, move into more powerful positions in workplaces, and earn an income that’s independent of their husbands.

In the long run, this will mean that women have an equal say in the development of our world.

Furthermore, women with jobs can contribute financially to their families which can help move the whole family out of poverty and give them a better standard of living.

13. Education reduces Unplanned Pregnancies and Sexual Diseases

Basic education on sex and relationships can dramatically reduce sexual diseases and unplanned pregnancies.

Here’s some facts:

The Borgen Project cites that completion of primary school will reduce a person’s chances of getting HIV. In fact, it reduces girls’ chances of contracting the illness 3-fold.

Educated people also have smaller families and they have them later in life. In Mali , women with a high school education have an average of 3 children. Women without a high school education have an average of 7 children.

14. Education helps us Realize our own Potential

Through education, we learn about what we like and don’t like. We learn all about things from science, math, languages and history.

After contemplating all of these different topics, we’ll be more capable of living our best life.

If you don’t get educated, you won’t open up your horizons and learn about the world. You may end up being stuck in an insular life without having experienced all the great things life has to offer.

You don’t need to go to school for this. Maybe being educated for you is just about reading books on a lot of different topics.

Either way, by educating yourself, you can realize your potential and live a more meaningful life.

15. Education can bring Enjoyment to People’s Lives

Unfortunately, it’s often overlooked that education can be pleasurable for its own sake.

I’ve talked all about how education can help people out of poverty, get them jobs, make them more powerful and less sick.

But it’s also important to remember that education can simply be enjoyable and therefore be important for helping you be happy.

Have you ever learned something really cool and just been glad you know that information now?

That’s what I mean by education being a fun activity on its own.

When people are learning just because they love learning, we say they are intrinsically motivated . This is the opposite to extrinsic motivation where people learn things so they can get a reward like a better job.

16. Education makes you more Tolerant

There is some evidence that highly educated people may be more tolerant than lowly educated people.

To take just one example, people from Latin America with a high school education are 45% more tolerant toward people with HIV than Latin Americans with only an elementary school education.

Similarly, Lorelle Espinosa argues that colleges are ideal locations for teaching tolerance. She argues:

The foundations of tolerance run deep in the college classroom, where students learn and confront new ideas, issues and experiences at times vastly different than their own.

This is, of course, if you have a good teacher who’ll teach you different people’s perspectives!

Importance of Education to Society

17. education prevents diseases in society.

Health education in classrooms can make an entire society healthier and live longer.

Health care education helps people avoid risky activities and behaviors, conduct basic first aid when someone is injured, and learn when they need to see a doctor.

The Population Reference Bureau argues that education of women on matters of health is especially important because they often set the standards for household behaviors like regularly washing your hands.

Educating children on health is also very important for the future health of a society.

That’s why Save the Children spends a lot of money on health education in developing countries. Here’s what they say the benefit of education is for children’s health:

Most importantly, through education, students learn how to adapt their daily habits to improve their health, nutrition, hygiene and prevent HIV and AIDS, gaining these important skills and behaviors for life.

18. Education helps a Country’s Economy Grow

When the population of a country is more educated, the whole country gets wealthier. This surely highlights the importance of education!

Here’s some facts that might be useful for you:

Hanushek and Wobmann (2010) looked at the evidence on the links between economic growth and education. They found that good quality education systems have a strong connection to long-term economic growth in a society.

Here’s their conclusion:

Economic growth is strongly affected by the skills of workers. What people know matters.

Hassan and Rafaz (2017) looked at economic growth in Pakastan between 1990 and 2016. They argue that:

[A] 1% increase in female education, female labour force participation, education expenditure and fertility rate causes 96% increase in GDP of Pakistan

Woah! Education of women appears to be a powerful way of increasing the wealth of entire societies.

19. Education can attract High Paying Jobs of the 21 st Century

You might have heard that manufacturing and factory jobs are becoming pretty rare in developed nations.

Because the high paying jobs of the future won’t be in unskilled labor. Those jobs are disappearing and going to poorer nations.

Instead, all the good jobs of the future will require a very high education level.

Often teachers like me talk about skills for the 21 st Century . These are skills like:

  • Creative thinking ;
  • Critical thinking;
  • Communication;
  • Collaboration;
  • Digital literacy

If children today aren’t educated on these important skills, they’ll have trouble finding the best jobs. And if a whole society falls behind in education, those good jobs will move overseas to where the most highly educated workers can be found.

20. Education can Prevent Wars and Conflicts

History lessons can be very powerful for helping is prevent the mistakes of the past.

If you want to avoid the mistakes of history, you have to learn about how they were made. By educating people about the events leading up to World War 1 and 2, we might be able to teach people how to avoid the same mistakes again.

Similarly, if a society is well educated on the dangers and heartbreak of wars, those wars might be prevented.

This happened during the Vietnam War when students on college campuses began protesting the war . These students worked hard to teach people all over the United States about what was really happening in Vietnam.

War journalists were also instrumental in educating the public on the terrible effects of the war. Video footage, photos and news reports sent back to the United States helped educate the population and helped boost the anti-war efforts.

21. Education is good for Democracy

Most first world nations ensure children are taught democratic citizenship .

Teaching the values of democratic societies – like the fact that we should elect our leaders – helps to keep democracy going.

If we don’t teach about how good democracy is for our freedom and prosperity, we may sleepwalk into an evil dictatorship!

Democracy is about more than voting. It’s about learning the importance of treating each other respectfully, volunteering in our community, and respecting each other’s liberty.

I think Senator Michael Bennet sums this one up well when he says in his blog post :

With education, the common man would be able to select leaders wisely and fight back against the tyrannical instincts of those in power.

22. Education leads to Medical and Technological Breakthroughs

Before we became obsessed with the link between education and money, societies still invested heavily in public universities.

Because strong higher education systems can lead to technological and medical breakthroughs.

Here’s a few things that people invented while learning and researching at universities:

  • The Seat Belt: Invented at Cornell University
  • Gatorade: Unvented at the University of Florida
  • Ultrasound: Developed at the University of Vienna
  • CAT Scans: Developed at Georgetown University
  • GPS: Developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Polio Vaccine: Developed at the University of Pittsburgh

23. Education can lead to Entrepreneurship

The online website Talk Business argues that entrepreneurs are always in need of more education. They argue:

…at their core [Entrepreneurs] are problem solvers and spend their time investigating potential solutions.

In order to solve problems, entrepreneurs enroll themselves in courses, read books, listen to podcasts and pay for mentors. In other words, they’re huge self-educators.

The article goes on to explain that entrepreneurs often don’t seek out a formal education from a school or university. Instead, they seek out answers to their questions from people who have already solved the problems.

So, education is good for business – but don’t narrow your definition of education. Education can come in all shapes and sizes.

24. Education may be the Solution to Global Problems like Climate Change

There’s two ways education can help us get out of the problem of climate change.

Firstly, educating people about sustainability can help us to reduce our ecological footprint on this world. If we recycle more, consume less goods, and ensure we’re cleaning up after ourselves, we can do a lot to help the environment.

Secondly, educating future environmental scientists is vital for finding the solutions to our current environmental problems.

Scientists of the future might find ways to dramatically reduce carbon emissions, reduce the temperature of the globe, or come up with better ways to produce energy.

In the race against time to solve the climate crisis, education may just be the thing that saves us from ourselves.

25. Education is important for Creating a Cohesive Society

Education helps us learn how to behave appropriately.

Emile Durkheim is a major theorist who came up with this concept.

According to Durkheim, schooling is all about ‘socialization’.

By this, he means we go to school to learn about more than maths and science. School has a hidden curriculum . The hidden curriculum is all the things we learn above and beyond our textbooks.

The hidden curriculum includes:

  • Learning manners;
  • Learning to get along with each other;
  • Learning to respect other people’s privacy;
  • Learning to follow the rules for the good of society;
  • and many more things besides!

So, without schools teaching us how to get along, there may be many more conflicts in our communities.

26. Education passes on Cultural Values, Heritage and Information from one Generation to the Next

How did you learn about Christmas? How about the 4 th of July? How did you learn about Native Americans?

We learn a lot of these things from school.

So, education also teaches us about our culture and who we are.

This usually takes place in history classes where we learn about the history of our nations and our world.

But we also learn cultural values from the hidden curriculum (If you haven’t read point 25, I talk about the hidden curriculum there).

For example, in western culture it’s polite to look people in the eyes and shake their hands. We also respect our elders. These are cultural values that are taught to us in everyday conversations at school.

27. Education can lead to Gender Equality

There is a lot of evidence that says education is the key to creating a more equal world.

For example, UNESCO states that women tend to be less educated than men in developing countries. However, women overall show more concern for the environment.

Why is this a problem?

Because at the moment women aren’t empowered enough (through education) to create change. More educated women means more power for women to effect change.

Here’s an example:

“Women constitute almost two-thirds of the 758 million adults who are unable to read or write a sentence – a vast pool of people we are not empowering to help us fight environmental shifts” ( UNESCO )

There is also the problem of gender stereotypes, which can be challenged through education . If we educate more people about justice and equality, gender stereotypes will diminish which will be good for gender equality.

Purpose of Education Essay: Writing Guide & Essay Ideas

The picture provides the introductory information about an essay about education.

“The more you read, the more things you will know, the more you learn, the more places you’ll go.”– these were the words of famous American poet Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Indeed, how do we go anywhere without knowledge, at least of basic notions?

Nevertheless, in the 21st century, people often ask themselves: “What is the purpose of education if I can Google anything?” It may seem you can get any piece of knowledge whenever needed. However, the answer to this question is much bigger than one can imagine.

🗣️ Education Essay: Top 5 Issues to Discuss

First, let’s see what the most discussed topics about education are. We’ve collected the five most popular themes you can use for the essay.

  • We’ll start with the primary purpose of education and the benefits it gives. Why should people get educated?
  • Our next stop is the value of education : is education a precious gift? What perspectives does it open?
  • We cannot miss the issue of unequal access to education . Why is education a privilege that not all people have? What is done to change it?
  • Another essential question is the cost of education : should education be free?
  • Finally, we’ll speak about multicultural education : what borders does it break?

Let’s dive in!

What Is the Purpose of Education?

A pretty exciting notion is that education is multifunctional. Even the questions like “why should education be free?” incline one of the purposes of education. Let’s call it enlightenment: coming out of the darkness of ignorance.

Here are a few more significant goals that education pursue:

  • Creating conscious, informed citizenry. A state can function properly when its residents know how to live in the community framework. Otherwise, chaos is unavoidable.
  • Intellectual development and broad-based knowledge have several benefits. They activate the power of reasonably high self-esteem and self-respect.
  • Finally, the basic knowledge of school subjects allows us to understand how the world works.

What Is the Value of Education?

What was once said by Kofi Annan perfectly fits at this point:

“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.”

Developing multiple skills through the education process, a person also learns how to think and make decisions. And these skills can hardly be overestimated: considering people determine how society develops. Education contributes significantly to building up one’s character and mindset. If one realizes the value of practical knowledge and not just the degree, one is destined to succeed.

This is why people need to have equal access to education.

The picture introduces the main values of education.

Equal Access to Education. Main Problems

Education is one of the spheres where inequality remains intensive. For example, the USA is considered one of the most advanced countries in the world. Still, the educational gap between the white population and minorities is too vast to ignore. Analysts think the position of students of color is disturbing . This inequity in education predictably leads to a gap in life quality.

The factors contributing to the increase of this gap are:

  • Low-quality schools,
  • Impoverished neighborhoods,
  • Lack of parents’ attention in the upbringing process,
  • Discouraged teachers.

Low quality of education leads to an intimidating number of unskilled workers who cannot earn decent amounts of money. That causes increasing crime rates, including petty crimes like thievery and much more severe crimes.

Activists in the field of education equity claim the following regulations to be asserted:

  • Better quality schools and more experienced teachers should be integrated with minority communities and neighborhoods.
  • The study process should be implemented in smaller groups to increase its quality.
  • Children should get access to education earlier. The amount of time spent on learning should be increased, too.

The picture introduces the main problems of unequal access to education.

Why Should Education Be Free? Or Shouldn’t?

The tuition fee has been constantly and dramatically growing. The overall student debt in the USA overcomes the amount of a trillion dollars. Low-income families cannot provide an appropriate education for their children.

Still, the question if education should be ultimately free is a pretty debatable issue.

On the one hand, the benefits of free education may seem completely apparent.

  • Many talented young people from impoverished households could potentially contribute to society. As we know, university study gives a degree and subject skills and develops networking. It helps promote one into desirable communities or positions.
  • Education fee immunity could allow students to focus on gaining knowledge and developing skills necessary for work and social life.

But what is an unobvious side of the question?

  • The most fundamental reason against free high education is the tremendous cost of that venue for the government budget. It’s assumed to be more than 70 billion annually.
  • Besides, various grants and scholarship programs allow low-income but gifted students to enroll in college. The only problem with it is that not all students have open access to such programs. This issue could be solved by spreading knowledge on available sources such as college websites, for instance.

The picture summarizes the main arguments for and against free education for everyone.

Why Is Multicultural Education Important?

When we try to answer the question “What is the purpose of education?” we should embrace one of the most valuable education purposes in general—tolerance. The feature is provided by the spaciousness of mind and acceptance of diversity.

We all are different – and that’s great. However, cultural and racial diversity demands various approaches. And sometimes, it can be challenging for educators to achieve this balance. A multicultural society has a chance to flourish when its members experience joint development. This is where the importance of multicultural education becomes evident.

However, this sphere is especially vulnerable. Students’ academic achievement, who belong to minorities, frequently depends on teachers’ attitudes and beliefs. At the same time, any extremities are destructive in this question. To feel happy and encouraged, each society member should be able to express themselves freely. However, it shouldn’t bring harm to others.

Value of Education Essay

Value sounds like a measurable concept. In other words, this notion is close to the materialistic world – something to be applied. Benjamin Franklin once said: An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” And who knew better about it all than America’s famous founding father? So, education in the life of a person possesses quite real value. The “investment” we make in it influences our success in life. And the “interest” that is at the same time the result of education depends on dedication and involvement. Education is precious because it opens up so many perspectives. By receiving it, we also learn how to build relations with the inner and outer world, live in the community, think, and make decisions. If we imagine a perfect society, its primary feature would be the large percentage of educated and conscious people. When one understands the cause-and-effect link of different things, it’s easier to accomplish goals. Another primary goal of our life is to grow human personality and upgrade the quality of our world-view. Finally, our ultimate goal is to know ourselves, and this we can implement in the form of education. All this adds to the whole picture of what a person is. And this knowledge is the most incredible value.

Why Is Education Important Essay

The world has been existing for thousands of years but is still suffering from ignorance. Statistics tell there are around 775 million illiterate adult people in the world today. Education is vital because it’s the means of getting the necessary skills for work. It embraces a lot more aspects, such as moral framework, humanity, critical thinking. Should people from South Africa have the same opportunities for education as those of the United States or the UK? Yes. This way, they would be able to make a more outstanding contribution to the world. The members of a more educated society would better embrace the differences between people because they would be aware of the close interconnection between phenomena. A law of human nature is that it’s easier to accept something when it gets to be clearly understood. In contrast, ignorance leads to aggressiveness and violence. Education, incredibly multicultural, allows people of diverse beliefs, religions, and nations to achieve the same goal. That is – the improvement of the world. Education is a power that breaks walls between different people, uniting the global community. And amidst the pandemic, we realize how badly the borders can restrict the freedom of existence.

Philosophy of Education Essay

If we spoke of philosophy, it would be the most appropriate to refer to its very basis. A well-known Greek philosopher Aristotle claimed: “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” Indeed, any learning process takes time and effort, but the benefits are always worth the struggle. Of course, if enough dedication is put into it. I would assume that understanding the central philosophy of education lies in its perception as a non-stop process. Every generation is brighter than the previous one. Here, we must credit the modern technologies and social media that make information lay on the surface where anyone can get it. Knowledge is the nourishment that supports our existence. It’s wrong to assume that education must stop after graduation because knowledge is not only the degree and skills for work. Indeed, it can be exhausting and complex enough for a person to learn constantly. But another philosophical idea of education is that it should be integrated into life naturally. Thus, education is not an easy path to go. It requires awareness and involvement. But this way is exciting, although challenging. All we need is to understand the value of education and see precisely why we want it in our lives.

Importance of College Education Essay

In the 21st century, the attitude towards higher education is changing. Generation Z representatives are starting to assume that it is not the most necessary option in life. The arguments seem pretty straightforward: smart enough can achieve success and go places using other means. There are many opportunities to do well that social media platforms provide. People get extremely rich and famous in no time. However, a college education does still possess great importance. Not everyone is destined to make it through the Internet. First of all, we still live in a real world where real people communicate and go through real challenges. College life is a special time in the whole framework of our lives. It can be compared with a training period during which one gets prepared for functioning in the big world. A strong network is also being built at a college. Besides the point, college study is about acquiring skills needed for work. The education system is not flawless at all. Still, it is a structure that has been established for hundreds of years, developing and perfecting. We can conclude that a college education is a highly vital experience that shouldn’t be underrated. It gives opportunities, broadens your mind, and eventually improves your life quality.

Well, it seems like education is a broad topic itself, isn’t it? By learning about education, people can bring their awareness to the next level.

Introduction

Understanding the notion of education, the purpose of education, reasons to have education, features of an educated person, works cited.

Education has always been regarded as a significant part of the life of every individual. People had developed a particular understanding of education since the first civilizations appeared. Nowadays, primary education is mandatory for children in most of the countries. This necessity is predetermined by the fact that the individual should have the education to become a full value member of society. Also, education is vital for both personal and professional growth. The importance of education cannot be overestimated because it improves one’s potential and knowledge, promotes the development of society, and enhances the understanding of the surrounding world.

As it has been already mentioned, education became an important part of life since the beginning of humanity. Every epoch and civilization, starting from the Antiquity, shared the particular understanding of the notion of education and relationship between teachers and students. For example, the Ancient Greek understanding of the relationships between educators and learners may be described as follows: “The instructor is not noticeably older than the boys, but they appear to give him the respect and deference that would be due an honored teacher” (Austin 7). Such view of the learning process demonstrates the belief that the relationships between teachers and students should be based on the mutual respect. However, other ancient civilizations shared different views.

Hsun Tsu, a disciple of Confucius, saw education as a strict process of alternation. “He compared the process of educating a child to the process of straightening a piece of wood against a board or sharpening a piece of metal with a stone” (Austin 8). Such an approach is more teacher-centered in comparison to the other. Understanding of the notion of education is connected with its definition as well.

In Wikipedia, education is defined as “the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits” (“Education” par. 1). Such understanding of education usually presupposes that the individual studies at school or any other educational establishment to receive particular knowledge. Austin writes about Okakok’s argument that the word “education” should not be used interchangeably with the word “schooling” (79). The author writes that people are tended to speak about an educated person when they mean somebody who has received an official education. “Since all of our traditional knowledge and expertise is of this latter type, the concept of an ‘educated person’ has worked against us as a people, creating conflicting attitudes, and weakening older and proven instructional methods and objects of knowledge” (Austin 79). However, the controversial nature of education is described not only in the meaning of the word.

An interesting view on the nature of education was expressed by Paulo Freire in 1970. According to Freire, education reflects the political situation in the country. In authoritative countries, teachers have the absolute authority over learners who have to follow their orders. Freire considers that the interaction between the teacher and learner has a narrative character. Thus, the teacher is a person who narrates while the student listens. “Education is suffering from narration sickness” (Austin 63). Freire believes that the teacher should let students express their opinions and participate in the process. Ideas of Freire vividly describe one of the purposes of education.

It is difficult to understand and appreciate the significance of education without knowing its purposes. Many students are reluctant to study because they see no point in studying formulas and learning poems by heart. The problem is that not only students but many people are confused when they try to define the purpose of education. Philip Guo writes that many individuals use clichés (e.g. education teaches us how to learn) to explain the purpose of education. “The main purpose of education is to strengthen your mind” (Guo par. 1). Guo considers that permanent learning makes one’s mind strong. Thus, education lets people be prepared to challenging situations in life. Guo provides analog from sport to demonstrate his point of view. He writes that a good player has to work on his or her body all the time. The same is with mental conditioning. Mary Wollstonecraft, one of the first advocates of the rights of women, realizes that all people need to develop the strength of mind. Wollstonecraft writes that people always react to something new or unusual “because they want the activity of mind, because they have not cherished the virtues of the heart” (Austin 37). By asserting the rights of women, Wollstonecraft recognizes the importance of education to become an active member of society.

Education comprises a significant part of the social life. The purpose of education was explained by Nick Gibb, the Minister of Education in the United Kingdom in 2015. Gibb dwelled on that education formed a cornerstone of the economy and social life (Gibb par. 10). This statement describes the second significant purpose of education. Proper education is necessary for being able to live in society. When people study at schools, universities, or other institutions, they happen to be involved in various social situations. Also, educators provide students with knowledge concerning the proper behavior in society often. Seneca wrote, “they [liberal arts] are raw materials out of which a virtuous life can be built — such as they are indispensable to the functioning of a free society” (Austin 16). Thus, education is what makes people prepared to the life with others. It makes everybody familiar with the concepts of justice, equity, and freedom. Such identification of the purpose of education is rather limited at the same time if take into account that education is a much broader concept.

Kim Jones writes that when it comes to finding the solution to the particular problem, education becomes inevitable aspect of the proper decision. Education is crucial for addressing poverty issues or environmental problems. For example, Douglas contemplates that education is directly connected with freedom. The author takes slavery as an example. He writes, “Education goes hand in hand with freedom, and the only way to keep people enslaved is to prevent them from learning and acquiring knowledge” (Austin 46). Jones considers that there is no universal purpose of education because it is a too diverse phenomenon (par. 8). The aim of education is connected with the reasons to have it.

The importance of education cannot be overestimated. It is necessary to evaluate the reasons to have education in various spheres of life. First, education is vital for individual development. When the individual receives knowledge, it alters his or her vision of the world. Also, education promotes the development of critical skills. Thus, educated people know how to analyze different situations (“Why is Education So Important” par. 3). In addition, education is useful for the improvement of character. Education teaches individuals how to become civilized citizens and behave properly. Hsun Tzu uses the word “gentleman” to describe an educated man. Confucius’ follower believes that a proper education is necessary for staying human and making right choices in life. “Therefore, a gentleman will take care in selecting the community he intends to live in, and will choose men of breeding for his companions. In this way he wards off evil and meanness, and draws close to fairness and right” (Austin 10). Education makes the individual aware of the way the world works. An educated person does not believe in illusions.

The second reason to have the education is connected with the professional development. College graduates are more likely to find an interesting job in comparison to those who neglect education. People with education have the possibility to build careers and improve their financial situation (“Importance of Education in Society” par. 4). One may argue that education brings purely material rewards. Still, the feeling of personal growth from career achievements should not be overlooked as well. As Tzu states, “If you make use of the erudition of others and the explanations of gentlemen, then you will become honored and may make your way anywhere in the world” (Austin 12).

The third reason to have education refers to its significance to societies and nations. Kurniawan dwells on the connection of the lack of education with large scale problems such as poverty (1). The writer provides insights from the macroeconomic theory arguing that government’s investment in education results in a better productivity of the labor force. Consequently, people can perform better activities and receive high wages. Also, education makes the whole society aware of the challenges and ways of their overcoming. Even more, education leads to the achievement of the higher level of awareness. “It epitomizes the special characteristics of consciousness: being conscious of , not only as intent on objects but as turned in upon itself in Jasperian “split” — consciousness as consciousness of consciousness” (Austin 65).

The importance of education may be understood after the evaluation of the features of an educated person. Many people consider that an educated person knows a lot of facts and can remember information easily. Knowing facts does not make somebody an educated person. For example, one may memorize numerous things but fail to use them in practice. An educated person should have imagination and the ability to think and use acquired knowledge. Otherwise, no efficient result will be achieved. Al-Ghazali thinks that “effort to acquire knowledge is the worship of mind” (Austin 25). Thus, an educated person enjoys the process of learning something new and knows rationales for all efforts. An educated individual comprehends that education is not about having a diploma or certificate (Burdick par. 5). It is about learning how to live and become a better person.

McKay provides an interesting description of three features of educated people. The author believes that educated people do not wait for someone to entertain them. They always know what to do. Second, any educated person may entertain his or her friend. As far as such individuals know a variety of information, they face no difficulty in amusing others (McKay par. 8). The last distinctive feature of an educated person is open-mindedness. Such an individual is open to new suggestions and ideas. Educated people are not prejudiced or biased against something. They always enjoy learning something new even from the extremely different perspective because it broadens their scope of knowledge.

The role of education has always been important for people. Philosophers and educators of ancient civilizations realized the significance of knowledge acquisition. Nowadays, education has become an integral part of modern life. Education is often defined as the process of acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and habits. However, some scholars argue that such a definition does not reveal the true nature of education because it is more than having certificates or diplomas. Numerous views exist about the purpose of education, but most of them recognize the fact that education aims to improve lives of people. Reasons to have education also predetermine its significance. Thus, educated people are aware of many things in the surrounding world. They cannot be easily tricked. Also, they know the true value of knowledge. Besides, educated people have better opportunities for the professional development in comparison to those who do not have the education. Finally, education brings benefits to the nations. An educated society is a substantial advantage of every country. It is also important to be aware of what makes educated people better and different. Educated people are not only those who know a lot of facts. An educated individual realizes that being able to use knowledge is as important as having knowledge. All these factors demonstrate the significance of education in the modern society.

Persuasive Essay: Why is Education Important in Our Society?

Introduction.

Education is more than just learning from books, and it is a shame that a lot of schools do not see that it is more than just a curriculum and school score. A good education can teach a child how to learn so that the child may take up independent learning as an adult. Education may also teach a child how to reason so that a child does not grow up to be ignorant.

I will show you the two best reasons why education is important in our society.

Persuasive point 1

The biggest selling point for education in our society is the fact that it helps people learn “how” to learn. It is not about the knowledge they accumulate, it is the way a child is taught how to “learn” things. A child may come away from school not knowing a lot of the course, but if that child has been taught how to learn, then that child may become an adult that learns everything he or she needs in life. Otherwise, that child may grow up to be a person that cannot see the obvious because he or she cannot reason and consciously learn new things.

Persuasive point 2

Education teaches people how to reason, and if they are taught how to reason well, then they help subdue their own thoughts of ignorance. For example, there are lots of posts and websites on the Internet about childhood vaccinations and how dangerous they are. Ignorant people than never learned how to reason will look at them, believe them and support them. If a person is taught how to reason then he or she will know how to recognize empirical evidence.

That person would look at all the people in the US that have had childhood injections (most of them) and then look at all the people with autism. They would reason that if childhood vaccinations caused autism then most of the people in the US would have autism. If a person is taught how to reason then that person may see how people that smoke seem more likely to develop emphysema than people that do not smoke. They would then reason there is a link between smoking and emphysema. This sort of reasoning can be taught in schools, and if children are not taught it then they walk around risking their children’s lives by not vaccinating them, and walk around smoking because their daddy smoked for years and it never hurt him.

If education is not seen as important, then one day it will just be all about school scores and hitting the factors of a curriculum. There will be a day when children start to hate learning because school put them off it for life (this already happens in some cases). Plus, without education teaching people how to reason things out and teaching them how to separate what is fact from what is faulty evidence, then our society will become more and more ignorant until a smarter country simply marches over and takes our country from under out ignorant noses.

importance of education for essay writing

The Importance of Education – Education gives us knowledge of the world around us. It prepares us to face the world. It changes us for the better and provides us with a perspective of life. When you are educated, you know when to speak and when to remain silent.

The entire progress of the nation is dependent on her literacy rates. But unfortunately, education is not free of cost today. Education, for all, remains a distant dream. Education is the foundation of the progress of a country. Let us see in detail below:

  • Education alleviates poverty:

People who have necessary skills like reading, writing, and numerical skills have more opportunities than those who lack it. They can explore the world and find their purpose in life. Educated people are health conscious and are more productive in their work. With the right education, people do not get addicted to harmful drugs and alcohol.

Education can help people choose their desired skills and career paths. With high literacy rates, we can have happy and healthy citizens.

  • Education reduces crime rates:

Education can improve the law and order situation of a place. People are more aware of fraudulent practices and have the courage to fight against crooked people. They become reluctant in giving bribes and do not fall in the traps of cons and criminals.

Primary and secondary education, if made free and compulsory, can prevent lots of children from committing crimes such as robbery, rape, and murder. After completing school education, children who go to universities,

have better employability scope, and will not consider crime as an option for survival. Thus, education plays a crucial role in making society safe and secure.

  • Education reduces inequality in society:

Our society was patriarchal in nature, and women were not allowed to earn money. Moreover, they did not have the right to own property and were utterly dependent on men. They were made helpless and often faced discrimination and oppression. But all these can change if women go to schools and colleges. They get to know about their rights and have the courage to fight for justice.

When women in low-income families go to work in industries, they get fewer wages as compared to men. Education can bring in the system where one has to pay equal wage for equal work.

  • Education is the only way to bust myths and superstitions:

We live in a diverse world with a plethora of cultural and traditional norms. But sometimes our ancestral beliefs can ruin a person’s life. For example, some people are considered ill-fated right from birth.

We have even grouped people as untouchables and denied them their fundamental rights.

The illiterate people believe in miracles where a simple prayer can make a blind person see, a dumb person talks, and a lame person walk. They end up wasting precious money by following such myths.

There are many fraudsters who take advantage of the ignorance of the people.

Education promotes scientific reasons for the occurrence of all the events in the world. So educated people alone can quash the existing black market based on religion and faith.

  • Education can prevent wars and terrorism:

Education sows the seed of hope in young minds. They imagine, dream, and proceed towards a brighter future. Education alone teaches us that waging wars could lead to nothing but a complete loss for everybody involved.

Some lose their families, their youth, and their future in the name of protests and fights. Some innocent people lose their lives, their properties, and their loved ones too.

A lot of natural resources are depleted in the name of war, and it is nothing but irreversible damage to Mother Nature by humankind. A sound education system can teach us ways to communicate and compromise. Knowing about all these losses through education; we can resolve our issues peacefully.

Related – Essay on Demonetization

  • Education promotes health and hygiene:

In primary schools, kids are taught about the significance of cleanliness and eating a balanced diet. We are also told about the advantages of recycling and reuse. We get to know about the scarcity of natural resources and the importance of conservation of nature and the environment.

We make judicious choices in everyday life. Lessons on living in harmony with nature and keeping the environment pollution free, when applied practically, could improve the quality of air, water, and soil.

It will also enhance the aesthetic beauty of the environment, and we will be able to attract more tourists.

Problems in the education sector:

Education is not available free of cost in our country. We don’t have enough reforms in primary education that represents the grassroots level. Poor people cannot afford to pay high tuition fees in private schools.

The sad part of our education system is the lack of quality in government schools. There is a lack of punctuality, discipline, and motivation among the teachers and management too.

So the number of dropouts from schools keeps increasing. Such children end up working as laborers and remain in poverty for the rest of their lives. In order to progress as a nation, the government has to set right the condition of all primary schools in the country.

Related – Essay on Digital India in English

Moreover, the exams conducted today test bookish knowledge. Students don’t have any skills that can fetch them some money. Once they move to colleges, students are not ready to accept low paying jobs. This results in unemployability and fuels the problem of poverty further.

Education then, and now:

Even in ancient India, people were given different kinds of knowledge based on the occupation of their families. Some were sent to Gurukul while others had to learn skills from their parents.

But today, we live in a world where classrooms can be virtual; and distance learning has become the norm. A simple device with an internet connection could bring a sea of change in one’s life.

Thus, providing high-speed internet services to all citizens might help us curb the menace of illiteracy. And, the Digital India initiative aims to achieve the same.

So, we can conclude that an exciting and motivating environment in schools along with practical in-demand skills would help many youngsters unlock their true potential.

Writing the Personal Statement for the Common Application

Today, the Common Application opens for the 2024–25 application cycle. As the platform opens, officially signaling the start of the college admissions season, many students are starting the daunting process of crafting their personal statements. The personal statement is a crucial opportunity to showcase individuality, character, and intellectual depth. In only 650 words, students should seek to encapsulate their authentic voice and perspective through a compelling and creative narrative. The process requires thorough brainstorming, strategy, and editing in order to produce an essay that is distinct from those of thousands of other applicants vying for seats at top colleges.

As students choose a prompt and begin brainstorming essays, here are the key points to consider in order to create a stellar essay for each prompt:

1. The Meaningful Background Prompt

Prompt: Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

This prompt invites you to share an aspect of your identity or experience that is central to who you are. Start by thoughtfully considering aspects of your identity that are unique to you; then, try to think of a specific anecdote or experience that provides a portrait of those qualities. While detail and specificity are critical for all engaging essays, they are particularly important in this one, as you should show (rather than tell ) admissions committees the things that are quintessential to who you are.

Your essay should also have a takeaway—aside from just telling admissions officers what the background, identity, interest, or talent is, you should also focus on what you’ve learned from this piece of your identity, how it has developed over time, and how you will apply it in college and beyond.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, 2. the overcoming obstacles prompt.

Prompt: The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

This prompt is an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and the capacity to learn from adversity—qualities that elite universities value highly. Begin by choosing a specific incident where you faced a significant challenge or failure—this could be an academic setback, a personal loss, or a time when you were out of your comfort zone. Students often fall into one of two common mistakes when tackling this question. First, many students rely on cliches and overused tropes. Keep in mind that admissions officers will likely read hundreds of essays recounting stories of students missing the game-winning goal or flunking a test in sophomore English. Try to select a story that only you can tell, and if you choose a topic you worry might be popular among other students, consider how you might recount it in a unique and unexpected way. On the other hand, some students fall into the opposite problem, sharing about a particularly personal, traumatic, or triggering experience that impacted them. Though it should convey personal insights, the personal statement is still a professional document, and you should not make your reader uncomfortable or unsettled by the information you share.

Finally, note that admissions officers are not primarily interested in the challenge itself, but in how you responded to the challenge. Focus on the steps you took to overcome the obstacle, what you learned about yourself in the process, and how this experience has shaped your future actions and mindset. Highlight any new skills, perspectives, or motivations that emerged from this experience, demonstrating your ability to grow and adapt in the face of adversity.

3. The Changed Perspective Prompt

Prompt: Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

Top colleges seek to admit students who are willing to engage in critical thinking and who possess the intellectual courage to question norms or ideas. For this essay, consider beginning with an anecdote—starting the essay in media res can be an engaging way to catch the reader’s attention and quickly establish the stakes of your narrative. As you share your story, remember that the essay’s focus is to demonstrate your open-mindedness, your commitment to seeking the truth, and your willingness to engage deeply with complex issues. It also shows your ability to respect differing viewpoints while developing your own reasoned stance. As such, you should take the admissions committee through your process of growth and change step-by-step, clearly articulating how the experience impacted you and how your changed perspective will enhance their campus community should you enroll.

4. The Gratitude Prompt

Prompt: Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?

Like the two prior prompts, this prompt requires students to share a particular anecdote, and students should consider beginning with their narrative before zooming out to explore the broader theme of gratitude. Start by recounting a specific instance where someone did something for you that made you feel unexpectedly grateful. This could be a small act of kindness, a significant gesture, or a moment of support that made a lasting impression on you. Then, explore how this experience of gratitude has affected your actions or attitude. As you do so, be sure to avoid platitudes or vapid buzzwords—rather than expressing that the experience made you feel “good” or “appreciated” or the equivalent, share how it has affected your perspective or actions going forward. The best responses are those that illustrate actionable change rather than fuzzy feelings.

5. The Personal Growth Prompt

Prompt: Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

A student’s college years are all about growth and transformation, and this prompt invites students to demonstrate their capacity for self-reflection and teachability. Thus, while this prompt might invite you to describe a major event or accomplishment, what you really want to show is a transformative period and the resulting reflection. Don’t feel as though the accomplishment, event, or realization needs to be especially earth-shattering or ground-breaking—sometimes the small things can make an impression in a big way. Finally, if you do choose to write about an accomplishment, be sure that you are not bragging. The prompt is an opportunity to show self-awareness, rather than to tout your achievements.

6. The Captivating Concept Prompt

Prompt: Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

Intellectual curiosity and authentic passion are distinguishing characteristics in the landscape of top college admissions. For this prompt, zoom in on a particular topic that genuinely fascinates you, whether it’s a specific academic subject, a philosophical idea, or a creative pursuit. Many students manufacture a response to this prompt based on what they assume will impress admissions officers—but if you aren’t truly interested in Kantian ethics, an admissions officer will be able to tell. However silly, mundane, quirky, or bizarre your “captivating concept” may be, if it’s true to you—write about it!

While your response should describe how a specific aspect of this topic captivates your interest and why it resonates with you on a deeper level, it should also demonstrate how you have taken the initiative to explore this topic in unique ways. Have you sought out books on the topic? Taken an online course to elevate your knowledge? Started a club to connect with others who share your interest? Developed a passion project that mobilized your interest in service of your community?

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

If none of the above prompts allow you to effectively express yourself, remember that the Common App includes an open prompt, wherein you can write on a topic of your choice! This is an excellent opportunity to share a story that doesn’t fit neatly into the other prompts but is crucial to understanding who you are. If you choose to pursue this prompt, make sure your essay is well-structured and cohesive, with a clear theme or message that ties everything together.

The Common App essay is more than just a component of your application; it’s a chance to speak directly to admissions officers and present your authentic self. Taking the time to brainstorm and edit will allow you to submit an essay that showcases your unique voice and original perspective to admissions officers at top colleges.

From essays to tweets: Writing education for the digital generation

Shruti Singhal

I finished school (class 12) in 2008, having chosen English literature as one of my main subjects, while English language was the mandatory subject. I loved both subjects: reading the classics and learning about the different eras in poetry in the literature classroom and persevering to get better at the mechanics of grammar and creative writing in the language classroom.

Library narratives, integrating sustainable development goals with school education.

Writing essays, letters or emails, and summaries – exercises that began at the middle school level – continued up until class 12, with the form and content increasing somewhat in complexity. A quick look at the CBSE 2024 syllabus for English writing shows that not much has changed in the years since I finished school. Although now, in addition to essays, and letters, and summaries, children are also taught to write messages and notes.

A part of me felt validated to see the practices of essay composition, letter-writing, and diary-entries continue to provide generations of students with opportunities to hone their language skills, express their thoughts and emotions, and connect with others through the written word. And yet, I wondered if we were missing something crucial. A majority of our communication today is nearly instantaneous and occurs through digital platforms. So, even if the traditional writing exercises remain useful in helping students structure their thoughts, it is important to recognize that digital communication has given rise to new modes of literary expression and communication. Doing so would urge us to rethink our approach to teaching writing in ways that are relevant for our digital and socially mediated world.

Digital literature for a digital world The world of digital literature is a vast expanse of creativity and connection, beyond the limitations of pen and paper. Think of posts on your WordPress blog or Substack, tweets on X (formerly, Twitter) as Twitterature, posts or carousels of poetry on Instagram, and so forth, where people use technology to write as well as present a piece of writing. Interestingly, where and how the writing is presented determines whether a piece of work can be considered digital writing. For example, if you wrote a novel on a blogging platform or any of the aforementioned microblogging platforms, and interacted with your readers and audiences, your work would be labelled as ‘digital literature’. However, if you merely wrote your novel on your laptop or computer (or any other digital device), and printed it, you wouldn’t necessarily be credited for creating digital literature.

importance of education for essay writing

I would also be remiss not to mention the sundry ways in which people write or create “content” today. There’s hypertext fiction, flash poetry, interactive fiction, locative narrative, text adventure, visual novel, video poetry, and generators (see box). You’ll notice that the content or literature is not limited to text, but includes sounds, visuals, images, charts, graphics, videos or moving images. I’m told there are several platforms (beyond social media platforms) for interactive storytelling and collaborative writing to explore, experiment, and engage with the written word in newer and more creative ways. Twine, for instance, is an open-source tool that allows users to interact and share non-linear stories, and Playfic is an online community that lets users write, play, and share text-based games with each other. Wattpad and Storybird are other web-based platforms that allow users to share their creative works.

Alongside these, Twitterature and Instapoetry have garnered popular attention and emerged as prominent examples of digital literary forms. Several authors have tweeted out entire novels, while others share their romantic musings or pearls of wisdom on Instagram. Small Places by Nicholas Belardes and The Good Captain by Jay Bushman, tweeted in 2007 and 2008, are considered the first Twitter novels. The popularity of Lang Leav’s poems on Instagram was noticed by Andrews McMeel Publishing. Widely regarded as the first success story of Instapoetry, Leav signed a deal with the publishing house for her book, Love and Misadventure . More recently, Rupi Kaur’s collection of poems was published in her book, Milk and Honey , which sold more than 11 million copies! These successes have inspired countless authors and poets to share their digital writing with their friends and followers.

Lay the foundation, and then innovate Introducing digital literature to the classroom would free today’s children from the constraints of traditional formats, especially since they are digital natives, having grown up in an era when digital media are commonplace. Their communication practices involve a persistent exchange of images, voice notes, videos, GIFs, memes through a variety of instant messaging apps. And so, wouldn’t it be severely limiting if the extent of their writing education was writing essays and formal and informal letters?

By introducing children to digital literature, we encourage them to think and express themselves in different ways, fostering students’ creativity. However, I do realize that we must remember to balance the allure of technology or digital communication with the timeless value of classic literature. Because it’s not about abandoning the tried and true methods of writing education, but rather about expanding our toolkit to include the digital tools and techniques that are reshaping our literary landscape. It’s about striking a balance between embracing the latest trends and ensuring our pedagogical choices remain rooted in tradition. And finally, it’s about cultivating in children a deep and lasting appreciation for literature in all its forms.

For instance, alongside writing descriptive essays or opinion pieces on a given topic, children can be asked to write Twitter threads, captions and carousels for Instagram, and voiceovers for a podcast or radio show.

Rethinking our existing approach in this manner will enable tomorrow’s writers to express the thoughts, sounds, and visuals of their imagination. The entire process of writing then becomes an immersive exercise for the writer as well as the reader.

A non-linear style of storytelling, this genre uses hypertext links and allows readers to choose the links they follow and the form the story takes. An interesting example is , by J Yellowlees Douglas.

Using gaming software, this is a real-time storytelling format that allows users to make decisions for their characters and move along in the story. An example is Emily Short’s .

This form takes users or readers through an immersive experience by having them listen to audio tapes about a specific location. Janet Cardiff’s is a locative narrative that users experience while taking a tour of London.

A form of digital interactive fiction with multiple storylines and more than one ending, this genre is often associated with video games. This genre is especially popular in Japan, where it originated. An example is Key’s Japanese visual novel, .

A poem accompanied by a video, this audio-visual genre involves the use of video recordings or graphics to complement the narration of a poem. An example is published on YouTube.

Telling a story through an algorithm or code, this genre enables readers to choose between their preferred words, phrases, and media that come together to form unique stories. Some examples are Nick Monfort’s , a poetry generator, and , an online novel about writing that combines text, audio, and video.

Also known as ‘cyber poetry’, this form used the once-popular software, Flash, to animate a word, a line, or an entire poem into a work of animation. Today, it denotes the use of interactive features and multimedia elements like graphics or animation. Komninos’ cyberpoetry site has a few notable examples.

Enabling users to write and share prose as well as poetry, this form is confined to the 280-character limit of the microblogging site, X.

A sub-genre of poetry that uses typewritten fonts and drawings, this form is popularly used on Instagram where users write their poems.

UPSC CSE Mains 2024: Finding essay-writing difficult? Experts show how to write impactful essays effectively

Upsc cse mains 2024: it is essential for candidates to know the art of essay writing, and secure the maximum number of marks. check what experts suggest..

With just a little over a month left for the UPSC Civil Services (Mains) Examination, 2024 to begin, candidates are probably racing against time to complete the syllabus to crack the country’s most prestigious exam. However, proper planning and practice can help candidates prepare for the exams effectively, thereby ensuring best results.

UPSC CSE Mains Preps 2024: Experts suggest easy hacks to learn the art of essay writing. Check out below. (Pxabay)

Clearly, the UPSC CSE Mains 2024 will be a litmus test for candidates who qualified for the preliminary exams, the results of which was declared on July 1, 2024.

PRELIMS VS MAINS: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

While the preliminary exams consisted of two papers, the Civil Services (Main) Examination will consist of a Written Examination and an Interview/Personality Test. It will consist of 9 conventional essay-type papers of which two papers will be of qualifying nature.

Now Paper I of the CSE Finals 2024 consists of Essay writing, which will carry a total of 250 marks, and candidates will get three hours to attempt the paper. As seen in the previous year’s question paper, there are two sections – Section A and Section B, with four essay topics in both the sections. Candidates were asked to choose any one topic in each of the sections, and write an essay in 1000 to 1200 words.

The commission states, “Candidates may be required to write essays on multiple topics. They will be expected to keep close to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in an orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.”

For a clear understanding, candidates can refer to the previous year’s question paper given below:

As such it is essential for a candidate to know the art of essay writing, and thereby secure the maximum number of marks out of the total 250.

Now it is understandable that writing an essay may not be as easy as it sounds, especially for an exam as crucial as the UPSC civil service exams. To make it easier for the candidates, team Hindustan Times spoke to experts from academic circles who have substantial experience in the field, and here’s what they recommend:

1. A POWERFUL INTRODUCTION

The first significant point about an essay is its introduction. The success of the essay lies in its ability to place the matter at hand in a way that it immediately arouses the curiosity of the reader. Dr Gautam Sarma, former HOD of English at Cotton University, said “It is imperative that the introduction of an essay carries, as it were, a gist of the entire argument that is going to be presented in the essay.

“While there are different ways of beginning an essay, an appropriate quote or a proverb stands to make the introduction impressive. A good introduction always sets the tone and tenor of the argument,’ added Dr Sarma.

2. FOCUS ON ORGANIZATIONAL HARMONY

Dr Sangeeta Goswami, a retired teacher of English, said “ What is most important while writing an essay is the fact that the subject of the essay should be understood properly so that a unified logical and coherent argument can be built up. It should be kept in mind that a streak sense of organizational harmony be observed without allowing any irrelevant or unnecessary details nearly in order to increase the length of the essay.

Dr Goswami, who has more than three decades of experience in teaching, added the points of the essay should be so organized that they appear to come automatically to establish themselves as inevitable and integrated elements of the essay itself.

3. PRACTICE WRITING FOR EFFECTIVE LANGUAGE

The language of the essay is what can make or mar the prospect and quality of the essay, believes Dr Mayuri Pathak, a former faculty of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM). She said, “Language plays an important role while writing an essay. While the language when used should be simple and free from glitches, it should also be at the same time appropriate and capable of conveying the sense of what is meant to be said.”

“I suggest candidates who are preparing for the Civil Service examinations to practice writing simple yet effective English, free from bombast and jargon,” she added.

4. CLARITY OF THOUGHT

The style of an essay is also responsible for maintaining the quality of the essay. Depending on the context of the essay, the candidate may take recourse to various styles such as formal, candid, argumentative, or analytical. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Champak Goswami, faculty at the Department of English at University Law College, and a researcher, said, “It is imperative that the essay in question is guided by a clarity of thought, aptness of diction and lucidity of expression. Slang and colloquial expressions are to be completely avoided while writing a formal essay.

5. EFFECTIVE CONCLUSION

Dr Gautam Sarma stated further, “Having written all the important points of the argument in the body of the essay, it now remains to be seen as to how the essay is concluded in a manner convincing and satisfactory to the reader. It should sum up the argument in a way that nothing important is left out, nor any superficial details added. In all, the conclusion should be both intellectually stimulating and emotionally gratifying.”

It may be mentioned here that the UPSC Civil Services (Mains) Examinations 2024 is scheduled to be held for five days, starting from September 20, 2024. Candidates who qualify in the written examination will appear for the personality test (interview round).
