Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan resumes his much-anticipated comeback with “Jawan” (Hindi for “Soldier”), a high-toned action-adventure about a well-meaning terrorist and his crack team of hostage-taking girls with guns.

Khan’s revival began a year ago with a prominent cameo in the otherwise meh mythofantastic superhero pic “ Brahmastra Part One: Shiva .” Then in, January, he stormed the box office with the lead role in “ Pathaan ,” a manic spy thriller and the most recent installment in the Yash Raj cinematic universe. “Jawan” will probably delight Khan’s established fans, and maybe uninitiated viewers, too, if only because he’s comfortably playing the hits, now with somewhat greater conviction and a little more polish.

“Jawan” was produced by the star and his wife Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production company, so it’s not surprising to see how well-worn and carefully navigated the movie’s contrived plot and conventional mood swings tend to be. This is a Shah Rukh Khan vehicle, and by now, that conjures certain formulaic expectations. Still, the makers of “Jawan” spend a little too much trying to convince viewers that we don’t really know Khan’s mysterious antihero, who, after an overproduced but still rousing flashback action sequence, takes a train-ful of commuters hostage.

Khan’s character, soon revealed to be Azad, the warden of a women’s prison, seemingly executes a woman in a burqa, all while wearing a goofy bald cap, which he soon rips off. Khan, in character, rasps out his expectations-flouting demands to the generically incensed negotiator Narmada (Nayanthara): get the Agriculture Minister to pay off starving farmers’ extortionate loans, or more people will die.

“Jawan” careens from one twist to the next, fast enough that it almost doesn’t matter how familiar and ultimately staid its story and set pieces often are. A few plot twists are also easy enough to anticipate. Azad romances Narmada and charms her impressionable ten-year-old daughter Suji (Seeza Saroj Mehta). He denounces various government officials and combats their corruption with a handful of bloody, media-amplified demonstrations. Azad speaks for the common people but behaves erratically, performing a little soft-shuffle dance surrounded by terrified commuters. He proudly and laboriously explains that he’s actually a good guy fighting the real enemy: public servants who do not serve the republic.

There’s an involved and agreeably goofy subplot that ties Narmada and Azad’s story with the movie’s opening scene, set 30 years prior in an unnamed village that may or may not be Tibet (somewhere near “India’s border,” terrorized by Asian soldiers in white star-studded green caps). If you’ve seen Shah Rukh Khan movies before, you won’t be especially surprised at how these two subplots tie together, though you may be delighted anyway. It’s a major plot twist that predictably takes over the back half of the plot and re-orients Azad’s plot so that viewers know that this time, unlike all the other times, it’s personal.

This time, there’s a nefarious weapons dealer, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi), who is as malicious as he is violent. There’s also a surprise cameo from a big Bollywood star, whose presence isn’t really a spoiler if you pay attention during the opening credits. And be on the lookout for a duet dance number led by Khan and Deepika Padukone, who have great chemistry, possibly because they know that, by now, they don’t have to really compete for viewers’ affection. Oh, and a couple of the fight scenes are maximalist show-stoppers despite being over-edited and under-directed. Loud and rote, sure, but never boring.

The main reason “Jawan” doesn’t deliver more than what Khan has previously delivered is because its creators seemingly included every masala-style subplot they could think of. Still, “Jawan” is unlike Khan’s last two comeback trail stops because its creators are better at navigating its many hairpin twists and turns. Kudos to director Atlee, a former assistant director whose credits include the Rajinikanth vehicle “Enthiran” and its sequel “ 2.0 ,” and his creative team.

Most importantly, in “Jawan,” Khan looks more relaxed than in years past, toggling leisurely through his repertoire of tics and poses. He looks especially comfortable in undemanding musical numbers, and he still gives great Blue Steel looks every time he turns on a slow-mo heel to pout at viewers’ and/or co-stars. Shah Rukh Khan is still a star, baby, and “Jawan” uses him about as well as his fans might hope.

Khan even looks good delivering a corny but impassioned speech later in the movie. As Azad, Khan reminds us that he’s just like you and me, the apathetic public who, despite our best intentions, have not always exercised good judgment when voting for government officials. There’s a general election in India next year, and while the makers of “Jawan” could have otherwise taken bigger risks, their efforts are appreciated.

Now playing in theaters.

It was a great cinema that I enjoyed watching fighting scenes that Vikram Rajput fought all the terrorist and soldiers wanted to guard them. As SRK fought inside a metro train departing at Subway Station and the bulb doesn't work inside the tunnel that Gaikwad wanted to check wire electricity and the min scene that people wanted to tell the news of Vikram Rathore. But soldiers went to hunt inside the jail and find that evil terrorists wanted to die by killing. The main scene is Shah Rukh Khan wanted to dress like a bald man. As there are bomb blasting around the police station. One fascinating scene is people who are getting handcuffed and shot by bullets from Sethupathi.

While fear may have governed Jawan’s handling of political issues, there is not even that excuse for the gender prejudice in its scripting and casting.

Jawan Review: Strikingly Meta Vehicle Taps The Magnetism Of Shah Rukh Khan

Jawan review: in the final act, srk and vijay sethupathi (who is as brilliant as ever) square off in a scene that caps a magnificent crowd-pleaser that blends some sharp writing and a high level of technical finesse..

Jawan Review: Strikingly Meta Vehicle Taps The Magnetism Of Shah Rukh Khan

A young South Indian director with a 100 per cent success rate - every one of his four previous films has been a humongous hit - and a Bollywood superstar with an enduring fan following like nobody else's combine to unleash a Hindi mass movie that is as good as any we have seen in recent times.

Jawan , which also has Tamil and Telugu versions released nationwide, brings together the best of two worlds in a manner that borders on the delightfully frenzied and consistently captivating. Shah Rukh Khan, coming off the box-office record-smashing Pathaan, makes the most of a screenplay that has things to say and the wherewithal to making its pertinent points without losing its focus on the primary purpose of providing unalloyed entertainment.

Packed with all the ingredients that you would expect in a high-octane action film, Jawan is a strikingly meta vehicle in which a star communicates directly with his fan base and holds forth on themes that are crying out to be addressed. To that extent, it is somewhat like the 2017 Vijay starrer, Mersal, Atlee's third directorial venture.

In his first Hindi film, Atlee, who has written Jawan with his Theri and Mersal collaborator S. Ramana Girivasan, taps the magnetism of Shahrukh Khan and the spirit of the hot-button themes of the times in a superbly crafted potboiler that mixes big explosive action sequences with intimate emotional scenes.

Jawan tells the affecting story of a soldier without resorting to jingoistic bluster. If anything, the film does the exact opposite. It speaks up on behalf of the masses and touches upon issues that matter to people at the mercy of the politically and economically powerful.

Without naming names or specifying real-life parallels, Jawan weighs in on crony capitalism, bad loans, farmer suicides, neglected government hospitals, malfunctioning military weapons, election fraud and the plight of a citizenry stripped of access to resources that are rightfully theirs.

Jawan turns the spotlight on apathetic ministers, falsehood-peddling politicians and incompetent and compromised bureaucrats, none of whom are willing to be held accountable for a rotting system. The film delivers its message with great flair but without succumbing to gratuitous grandstanding.

Who is better equipped to do all this than SRK, who, even when he plays a larger-than-life action hero on a mission to take down a powerful industrialist who has wronged him and his nation in more ways than one, can stay rooted in the real world and animate the canvas with humanity even as he projects an invincible, superhero-like persona?

Jawan , produced by Gauri Khan under the Red Chillies Entertainment banner, erases the line that separates the actor playing a fictional figure and the star engaged in a conversation with his audience. The latter is inevitably one-way but as one watches the film in a packed hall its resonance with significant swathes of the audience is palpable.

SRK carries off the onerous task with such phenomenal panache that one barely notices when one entity gives way to the other. The narrative is never in danger of losing its balance even as the performer and the character shorten the distance between them.

On one level, Jawan is a fan service masala film. On another, it is a tale of revenge that is also a political statement, and a loud and clear one at that. Jawan ends with the hero looking straight into the camera - it is positioned in a way that represents the eye of the audience - and tangentially echoing what SRK's character had said more than once in the action-comedy from a decade ago, Chennai Express ("Don't underestimate the power of a common man").

Ask questions, seek answers and use the power of your vote wisely, he exhorts the audience with all the solemnity that he can muster following an act of daring that compels the head of state to accept his demand to intervene.

Jawan opens in a hilly village on India's border - the exact location isn't specified - where a badly wounded soldier is nursed back to physical health. A few months later, he springs to the defence of the hamlet when it is attacked by a band of murderous infiltrators. He repels the aggressors but the brave warrior does not remember who is. A little boy who he saves from certain death promises to find out when he is old enough.

The film cuts to three decades later. A Mumbai Metro train with more than 300 passengers is hijacked by a group of six women (played, among others by Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) and an ageing man (Shahrukh Khan) in the guise of an Army Captain. He demands that he will negotiate only with one particular police officer, Narmada Rai (Nayanthara, who hits all the right notes).

The parleys over the next few minutes brings an unlettered agriculture minister and a wealthy businessman, Kali Gaekwad (Vijay Sethupathi), into the picture. At one end of the spectrum, we hear the story of a farmer (Omkar Das Manikpuri) forced to kill himself because he has defaulted on a Rs 40,000 loan for a tractor. At the other end is the case of a bank waiving off an industrialist's Rs 40,000 crore loan.

The captain's first encounter with the law gives way to scenes in a woman's prison where he reappears as a jail warden, Azad, a man who has revolutionised life for the inmates with boldly progressive initiatives. The jailer, with the help of six women who have suffered at the hands of those who wield power, is determined to change how the prison - and the nation - functions.

The first half of the 170-minute film is fast-paced and replete with stylishly executed fight sequences and a track that witnesses Azad and Narmada, a single mother, entering into wedlock. Post-intermission, Jawan recounts the story of Azad's birth, the fate of his mother (Deepika Padukone in a memorable special appearance) and his relationship with the former women's prison jailer Kaveri (Riddhi Dogra).

The flashbacks out of the way, the film returns to the thick of the action around the villainous tycoon whose misdeeds extend to trying to influence the electoral process with money power. The hero and his supporters fan out to stop the baddie and his accomplices in their tracks.

In the chase sequences in the run-up to a rousing climax, director Atlee and his team pull out the stops and come up eye-popping action passages. In the final act, SRK and Vijay Sethupathi (who is as brilliant as ever) square off in a scene that caps a magnificent crowd-pleaser that blends some sharp writing (the Hindi dialogues by Sumit Arora are almost always on the ball) and a high level of technical finesse.

Jawan hits the bull's eye both as a movie that is out to entertain and a vehicle that demonstrates the power of a superstar endowed with a voice that is anything but ordinary. It manifests itself as much on the screen as it does outside its fictive confines.

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan packs a punch in this massy, meaningful actioner

Jawan review: shah rukh khan is undeniably massy in this atlee directorial co-starring nayanthara..

A Shah Rukh Khan film releasing is nothing short of a festival, and I say this with utmost surety because it's not everyday that you see a theatre housefull for a 6am show. After starting the year with a bang with a blockbuster Pathaan, SRK's Jawan goes one level up - both on being overtly dramatic and loaded with high-octane action. Writer-director Atlee presents Khan in an all-new avatar - rough, tough, gritty yet not without his impeccable wit. (Also read: Jawan review and release live updates )

Jawan review: Shah Rukh Khan brings more drama and action with his new film.

Jawan is an SRK show from start to end, and it's double the treat watching him in a dual role. From his heroic entry scene to the fights to dance numbers, there's nothing that he can't do and makes you believe in it as well. At 57, turning 58 in November, SRK bowls you over with his action. Given the amount of action he has done in Jawan, it appears that Pathaan was a mere teaser. Atlee makes sure he doesn't disappoint audiences in his Hindi directorial debut, as he blends all the elements of commercial cinema to build a massy entertainer.

Jawan doesn't conform to any set templates or tropes and mixes everything that makes for an engaging and entertaining watch. Mention commercial, masala potboiler with action, drama, song and romance and Jawan has it all in abundance. I won't even say don't apply brains, please do because it highlights some important topics. The nearly 3-hour long film tells a compelling tale of prevalent corruption at various levels in the system that affects the common man in the most brutal ways. Thankfully, at no point it gets preachy, though it goes into a social commentary zone for a while, especially with a monologue from SRK towards the end.

Jawan's non-linear narrative starts in the present day and moves 30 years ahead and then uses flashback to explain the why and how. I won't share highlights of the plot for they may get spoilery. But, one can safely say that Jawan is not entirely a revenge drama but every sequence is a short story in itself with an elaborate flashback reasoning the current actions. Somehow, that also seems to be a problematic thing for I missed the consistency in storytelling. Jawan doesn't let you stay on one story for too long and hops on to the next too soon, thus breaking the flow.

What's consistent in Jawan is the top-notch and intricately choreographed action that offers an absolute cinematic experience. All the hype about Bollywood meets South makes sense when you see so much south ka tadka, especially in slo-mo shots, gravity-defying action with men flying and hero with his demigod status. A full-on actioner, it takes on the burning topic of farmer suicides over non repayment of smallest of bank loans. Given what the country went through in the past year witnessing mass farmer protests, the subject instantly strikes a chord, and makes you think hard. There this one moment showing a farmer hanging himself from a tree, and that spine-chilling scene leaves you heartbroken.

Another time, Jawan touches upon the corruption in healthcare system and the sad conditions of government hospitals. The film switches tone from being an actioner to a lighter tale in no time. There are two parallel stories running simultaneously. In one, Narmada (Nayanthara), head of Force Once is looking for Vikram Rathore (SRK) who put the lives of 376 passengers at risk while pulling off a perfect hijack. The second story shows Narmada and Azad Rathore (also SRK) falling for each other. Meanwhile, the baddie, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi) an arms dealer, has a history with Vikram Rathore and Azad gradually becomes a part of their story.

SRK's army of girls is the backbone of Jawan and it's heartening to see that each of them get enough screen time to shine and form an integral part of the film's story and screenplay. Doctor Eram (Sanya Malhotra) was wrongly framed in the killing of 57 innocent kids and ends up in prison while Kalki (Lehar Khan) as a farmer's daughter wants to avenge her father's death. Helena (Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) the ethical hacker and Lakshmi (Priyamani) as the girl-next-door have interesting character arcs. Along with their chief, all these girls showcase determination, conviction and grit.

For each stunt he plans, SRK dons a new look and much to the delight of his fans, he aces them all. Especially that metro hijack sequence where Khan sported a bald look that created enough buzz after the teaser dropped, shows him like never before. As a young Azad, he wooed with his lover-boy image and as Vikram with grey hair and a cigarette in his mouth, he carries unmatched swag.

Matching SRK's stardom, Vijay Sethupathi brings his own charm and gravitas. His portions are powerful and menacing. In his young as well as aged avatar, Sethupathi doesn't let go of the fear he evokes with his presence. His confrontation scene with Vikram ahead of the climax is brilliantly written and shot with a tinge of humour. Nayanthara brings freshness and is greeted with a slo-mo shot each time she comes on screen. Sadly though, her chemistry with Khan fails to ignite any sparks and it's quite bland. Deepika Padukone, on the other hand, as Vikram Rathore's wife Aishwarya, in a special appearance, is a treat to watch. There's even a dance number featuring the two, giving full-on Chennai Express nostalgia. Sunil Grover as officer Irani is a revelation and you wish there was more of him on screen and more for him to do.

Jawan's screenplay by Atlee and S. Ramanagirivasan is engaging and gripping but Sumit Arora's dialogues are quite forgettable and average considering the scale the movie is mounted on. Other than the one line when SRK says, 'Bete ko haath lagane se pehle baap se baat kar' nothing really stays with you for long.

Nevertheless, Jawan is a wholesome watch that won't give you any dull moment. Keep your eyes and mind focused on screen for there's a lot to take in and you don't want to miss the action or know why it's happening in the first place. Watch out for a climax that's one paisa vasool moment.

Jawan Movie Review: Atlee's 'Jawan' has a terrific Shah Rukh Khan in full-on 'mass' mode, but the film itself is far from terrific

 • 07 Sep 2023
 • Release Date: 07 Sep 2023

Jawan Movie Review

Jawan Movie Cast & Crew

In the same year, Shah Rukh Khan has given us a masala movie with Pathaan and a "mass" movie with Jawan . Everything tied together in Pathaan . Everything – the Dimple Kapadia character, the reason the villain became a villain – was tied to the nation. In other words, we had a screenplay that entertained us by telling us an organic story, whose every emotional beat rose from a central idea. Atlee's Jawan could have been a similar masala movie – but then, with the exception of Bigil , Atlee does not do coherent masala movies. He makes "mass" movies that showcase the hero, and few hero-showcasing scenes have topped the one in Jawan , where an ailing, bandaged Shah Rukh Khan is roused by the sound of bullets at the beginning of the film. Just like an amnesiac gets his memory back (at the end) through the sound of a gun, this mummified Shah Rukh is revived by these bullet sounds. We get a sensational silhouette – bandages flying, the sky streaked with lightning. And the hero is back in action.

The action hero really seems to be back in Hindi cinema, after Pathaan and Gadar 2 and now Jawan . But (again), where Pathaan and Gadar 2 (except for the comical last half-hour) were proper films, Jawan is what I call "a cartoon for undemanding adults". The "mass" movie is the grown-up equivalent of the colourful, hyper-cut animated shorts you'd play for your kid in the car to keep them occupied. And that is not a diss. Not everyone goes to the theatre to make sense of narrative arcs and character arcs and marvel at set pieces and performances. Sometimes, you just want something to keep playing on screen while munching on popcorn and looking at your phone. And sometimes, you want to treat the theatre like a temple and step inside simply to worship your star. In that opening scene with the mummified Shah Rukh, his shadow is projected on the statue of a local god. The devotees in my theatre were in throes of ecstasy.

Shah Rukh is in fine form, playing to the gallery as a mysterious bald man who hijacks a train, with his army of six women. He is even better in his second role, as a spaced-out older man who kicks serious ass but just doesn't want to be kissed. What drains the joy from the film is the very southern trait of wanting to message-ify everything. Atlee has often been accused of repackaging older films. Here he repackages the entire oeuvre, the entire sensibility of his guru Shankar. The man dispensing vigilante justice, the man with the half-mask, the man fighting for farmers, the man fighting the broken healthcare system, the man fighting the broken electoral/political system, the man fighting a corrupt arms dealer (an ill-at-ease Vijay Sethupathi) who is responsible for the deaths of Indian soldiers and who wants to make India the base for factories that pollute the environment – it's all in here. And along with the one big, patented Shankar flashback, we get several mini-flashbacks, too.

Because it tries to pack in so much (instead of following a single thread of villainy), Jawan lacks the focus and the emotional impact of the odd-numbered Shankar films ( Gentleman , Indian , Muthalvan… ). But then again, I am making an unfair comparison. Shankar believed in organic screenplays. He believed in the masala movie. Atlee is servicing a new generation, and maybe the way to look at his work is to see Shankar's films as reshaped for the attention-deficit Tiktok generation (as one of my blog readers put it). Several scenes are so hyper-edited that you think the filmmakers are saving OTT viewers the trouble of fast-forwarding through them. Even the emotions with the super-glamorous Nayanthara and her daughter are barely allowed to linger. She plays the negotiator out to get the vigilante. It's a nice twist to have this character played by a woman, a single mother. But her "strength" soon falls away, and she gets in line with the plan.

The things happening on screen – that is, the reasons for all this sound and fury – sound very emotional, but they are all showcased in quick bursts of quick-cut scenes and the tragedies barely register. And as a result, none of the women in Shah Rukh's gang (Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, etc.) come alive as characters. They are all interchangeable. Apart from the hero, the one actor who makes an impression is the radiant Deepika Padukone. In this "screw the old farts who want the movie to breathe, just move to the next highlight" approach, it was a relief for at least this old fart to get to the main flashback with Deepika's old-world character. I loved the way she is written. On the surface, she is playing what Nithya Menen played in Mersal – but this woman has a lot more agency and dignity.

For a brief while in this Deepika Padukone portion, we are back in the realm of solid masala cinema again. We learn about a boy raised in a women's prison, who is told that they are all mothers. And we realise that Shah Rukh's all-woman gang is no gimmick. He is a man raised by women. The situation (and Irshad Kamil's lyrics) for the beautiful song Aararaari Raaro took me back to 'Chanda hai tu' from Aaradhana , and it's a wonderful device to have snare drums in the interludes to hint at the missing father who was/is in the army – a man so mythical that his face-reveal happens through fire. The film's scale is big, and the on-screen grandeur helps us really savour the larger-than-life flavour of these moments. And Anirudh's electrifying background score helps. It makes us feel things are more exciting than they really are.

At some parts, we get a chant that sounds like "massy massy massy oh" – and it's as though we are being reminded that we are inside a "mass" movie and should not be analysing anything. If you are that person, good for you! Otherwise… The portion where a sketch artist draws a suspect's face while a wedding is in progress had such potential for suspense. But why bother? This is a "mass" movie? The portion with Shah Rukh and Nayanthara and her daughter had such potential for romance and drama. But why bother? This is a "mass" movie? (For a good masala version of how such a track can play out, see Yennai Arindhaal .) Jawan definitely has its moments, like a car and bike chase that's staged grandly (at least by our standards) or the whistle-worthy baap/beta line that works superbly even if you've already seen it in the trailer. But as always with these "mass" films, some of us will come away with this feeling: all those crores, and they couldn't buy themselves a decent script. (PS: "mass movies" need good writing, too.)

Jawan movie review: Shah Rukh Khan film has received a big thumbs up after its screening on Thursday night.

Jawan Movie Review: Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara, is an out-and-out massy film with a powerful message.

Jawan FIRST Review Out: The early review of Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, is finally out, and it’s extremely positive. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra, who attended the screening of Jawan last night, is raving about the “massy” movie, directed by Atlee. Jawan also features a special cameo appearance by Deepika Padukone, who co-starred with SRK with Pathaan.

Sharing the review on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mukesh wrote: “Jawan was an emotional roller coaster. Thank you for making me a part of this film @iamsrk and @Atlee_dir and @_GauravVerma. Even if I wasn’t a part of this film, it moved me and gave me goosebumps. One of the best Bollywood and Pan india films I have seen. Massy with a message.”

Jawan has already created a history at the box office as the film has sold more than one million tickets in India. If advance sales are anything to go by, Jawan has earned over Rs 37 crores gross globally. Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu sent his best wishes to SRK for the release of Jawan and said that he’d be watching the movie in a theatre with his family. Jawan is likely to feature special cameos by South superstars Thalapathy Vijay and Allu Arjun of Pushpa fame.

Jawan is a Red Chillies Entertainment presentation directed by Atlee, produced by Gauri Khan, and co-produced by Gaurav Verma. The film releases worldwide today in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages.

Jawan Review: SRK Shows Who's Baap !

Jawan springs a real surprise when it boldly and directly points fingers at the ineffective government and appeals to recognise the power of the finger and vote. Just months before the next general Indian election, this is no coincidence, observes Sukanya Verma.

jawan movie review film companion

Shah Rukh Khan responding to criticism through his movies is a triumphant act.

When they said he's playing the same version of Raj and Rahul over and over again, he parodied his romantic monotony and signature pose to hilarious results in Om Shanti Om .

When they bullied him and called for his boycott and played dirty, divisive politics, he fought hate with Pathaan 's patriotism of love that had India swarming to theatres in thundering unison.

When his kid was caught in the crossfire intended to shut him down, pats comes a rejoinder in Jawan 's crackling line (dialogues by Sumit Arora), ' Bete ko haath lagane se pehle, baap se baat kar' .

Like Pathaan , his brand new action masala is a product of hype and hoopla that relies on SRK's stardom on screen and fandom off it to show what makes him King Khan.

As expected from an event movie of this stature, Jawan plays on the 'mass' sentiment, bells, whistles et al intended for people flocking the screens and having a good time.

Things aren't all popcorn.

Bollywood's ongoing blockbuster trend is telling of our desperate desire for a leader, a rescuer, a problem solver, which only epic extravaganzas high on fantasy fulfillment and escapist zing can provide.

Written and directed by Tamil film industry's whiz kid Atlee, Jawan 's world is akin to comic book reality that rewards lawbreakers and disruptors with extraordinary support and sympathy from the authorities.

His villains versus vigilantes clash ticks off the Mersal and Bigil filmmaker's penchant for an anarchist brand of justice-seeking, frequent flashbacks, leading men in multiple avatars and grand entry scenes tailor-made for applause.

Only this time, instead of his go-to hero Vijay, it's Shah Rukh Khan playing a character, um characters, that evoke everything from a bandaged shinobi like Dosu Kinuto in the Naruto universe, a Western cowboy in a vintage cravat and Burt Reynolds moustache, a partially masked hero like Vikram's Anniyan , Hrithik Roshan's deceiving disguises in Dhoom 2 to backstories that carry echoes of Bane, Batman and Joker and Atlee's own vision of a women-centric Wakanda.

Its influences may be from all over but Jawan 's heart is shuddh desi and gets its thrills from old-fashioned emotions and retaliation justified by an eye for an eye logic -- think Aakhri Raasta .

And so between unstoppable action pieces at India's unspecified (ostensibly north-eastern) border, Mumbai's metro and a conveniently accessed multipurpose women's jail, witness thousands of tears streaming from every character's lone, left eye while we gain a better understanding of why half a dozen women (Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, Lehar Khan, Aliyah Qureshi) are collaborating with a scruffily bandaged SRK in a hostage-like situation while giving roly-poly politicians sleepless nights and a hotshot cop (Nayanthara) much to fret about.

Throw in a bunch of retired army men and a precocious little girl to the mix along with Anirudh Ravichander's soundtrack and 169 minutes of Jawan wrangles to put all its ideas and ambition in place.

The songs, some catchy, some not so much, act as a speed breaker in a momentum that's delightfully accelerated by its rocking thematic title track alone.

SRK does most of the heavy lifting backed by his aurat -empowered army, it's an earnest touch if not pathbreaking. Though it is strange watching a brilliant actor like Sanya Malhotra reduced to a sidekick but kudos to Nayanthara for believably pretending she cannot identify THE voice, THE dimples and THE eyes the world would instantly recognise from miles away.

Once again, SRK finds a worthy companion in Deepika Padukone's brief but poignant presence. Her few dazzling minutes left me far more stirred, shaken and sobbing than all of Jawan 's guilt-tripping approach to society's rampant corruption.

Atlee's depiction of farmer suicides and shortage of oxygen cylinders triggering a state of death and despair is excessive to the point of deceit. Luckily for Jawan , its hero is not a witless peacock.

Shah Rukh Khan's sense of humour and savoir faire (bald, bandaged avatar, for the win) make it easy to look at the bigger picture even when he channels his inner Rajinikant and fights an equal nemesis in Vijay Sethupati's deadly, deadpan, die-hard ogre.

Sethupati's cacophony-free, chilling menace is mildly absurd, wholly wicked in its impact. He's like Amjad Khan, reborn with an accent.

Speaking of khalnayaks, Jawan has a jovial cameo if not jadoo ki jhappi in its trove of twists and tricks.

Where Pathaan was a celebration of his legacy, a moment of overwhelming reassurance from and for SRK, Jawan , where he's accompanied by a battery of women, reiterates he's got the audience wrapped around his finger in a high-octane political drama that compensates for its lack of sharps and slyness with oodles of swagger, style and soft barbs at the system.

Beyond its comic-book entertainment chronicling the age-old war between good and evil, Jawan springs a real surprise when it boldly and directly points fingers at the ineffective government and appeals to recognise the power of the finger and vote.

Just months before the next general Indian election, this is no coincidence.

Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara’s Jawan has hit the theatres (worldwide), and boy, if the first reviews are anything to go by, the film is already a blockbuster.

Early in the day, videos of fans with huge cut-outs of King Khan reaching the theatres in different parts of India made their way to social media.

Soon, people also started sharing visuals from inside the theatre. The scenes were absolutely magical, with both young and old dancing to the hit number, Zinda Banda.

In one of the first reviews on X, formerly Twitter, trade analyst Taran Adarsh called Jawan an "exhilarating blend of emotion and mass action", adding that director Atlee has delivered a masterpiece. "This year belongs to the Baadhshah Shah Rukh Khan," Adarsh said, urging fans not to miss it.

In her review for Film Companion, Sruthi Ganapati Raman lauded Shah Rukh, saying, "He is terrific in Jawan not just in moments of pure revelry but also when he is required to pair it back."

"The film is also surprisingly funny in oddest of times," she added in a detailed review here.

Journalist-YouTuber Sonup Sahadevan said that Jawan is "outstanding". She added, "Shah Rukh Khan is exceptionally brilliant."

"All hail King Khan…Shah Rukh Khan’s swag, aura, and magnetism is at another level," he posted on X.

Film critic and trade analyst Rohit Jaiswal said that Shah Rukh Khan's message to the world was loud and clear that he's the Baadshah. "Lady Superstar Nayanthara the new crush of Hindi belt, what a phenomenal actress, what a terrific performance," he added in his post on X.

"Overall Jawan is entertaining, engaging, filled with clap-worthy and seeti maar [whistle worthy] moments, extraordinary action sequences," Rohit wrote, giving the film 4.5/5 stars in his review.

Film critic Nishit Shaw was also all praises for Jawan, Shah Rukh's second release in 2023 after Pathaan.

"Riding high on elevation, Atlee emerges as a master storyteller. Shah Rukh Khan is the backbone, Nayanthara is brilliant, and Vijay Sethupathi is as usual fun to watch. Technical brilliance right from Colours to Sound Design," he posted on X, giving the film 4/5 stars.

Trade analyst Sumit Kadel has declared that Jawan is “GIGANTIC BLOCKBUSTER.”

As per fans, Jawan’s “cliffhanger before the interval is brilliant”.

"The cliffhanger before the interval is brilliant! Nayanthara is gorgeous and strong in every frame! Vijay Sethupathi fits the role like he was born to play it," wrote a fan in a detailed review of the film.

Another added that Jawan has “North-South magic.”

Some have said that Jawan is “a must-watch blockbuster that showcases the brilliance of SRK.”

“Jawan will set the box office on fire. SRK’s style, swag, looks and dialogue delivery are terrific. Excellent and Heart-thumping BGM! A theatrical experience not to be missed,” read a comment.

With ecstatic fans calling it the biggest blockbuster of Shah Rukh's career, Jawan is likely to rake in some serious box office numbers over the next few weeks. Fans and critics have thrown their weight behind Shah Rukh's mass avatar in this Atlee directorial, once again making him the undisputed King of Bollywood.

Just when everyone thought the era of mass entertainers was over, Shah Rukh Khan returns with Jawan and appears to be saying, "Picture abhi baaqi hai, mere dost."
