Calculating market demand means answering questions about your target audience, their purchase behaviors, and factors that may affect their preferences and habits. Ahead, learn the basics of determining demand for a product or service before you go all in on your big idea.

What is market demand?

Market demand refers to the total quantity of a product or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at a given price within a specific market. It represents the collective desire and purchasing power of all potential customers. Market demand is influenced by factors such as consumer preferences, income levels, population demographics, and overall economic conditions.

Total market demand can fluctuate over time—in most cases, it does. This could be due to a variety of factors, some seasonal and predictable, others more out of our control, like a natural disaster or even a pandemic. Sometimes the entire demand curve shifts.

When more people want a specific type of product, the quantity demanded increases, and retail prices typically go up. When market demand decreases, prices typically follow suit. With any truly competitive market, there will always be ebbs and flows of supply and demand.

Why is market demand important?

One common business mistake is not considering market demand for your venture, especially when it comes to product development . You don’t want to invest too much in products that no one will buy—sitting stock eats at your profits and takes up warehouse space. You also want to account for economic growth as well.

On the flip side, you want to make sure you always have enough to serve your customer base. Out of stocks are costly issues and could spoil your chance to snag a new lifelong customer.

What is the difference between individual and market demand?

Individual demand refers to a single person or household, while market demand generalizes trends for many individuals in a particular segment. An individual who is passionate about dogs is more likely to pay more for a dog product than someone who has an average or minimal interest level. That individual’s preferences might not reflect the trends of your entire target market. General market demand is also often referred to as aggregate demand.

The distinction is important to note while doing your own market research . To estimate demand, you need to survey many individuals—not just the individuals who have the most passion for your industry or product. If you forecast based on individual demand, you might have skewed data and make yourself vulnerable to significant losses.

What’s a market demand curve?

The market demand curve is a visualization of demand based on product pricing . You map all of the individual demand inputs onto a line graph to create the market demand curve.

On the Y axis, you have different price points. On the X axis, you have the number of times the product has been purchased in a given time period at that price point. You’ll have several lines, one for each individual, that typically slope downward. This is because when a product is priced higher there’s usually a shift in demand, as people are likely to buy less of it. On the flip side, the supply curve slopes upward.

It’s critical to keep an eye on the demand curve over the course of the year so you can adjust your business strategy appropriately. When demand increases, this is often an opportunity to raise the price of your products, but you don’t want to raise prices so much that your customers opt for your competition.

How to identify market demand

While one-to-one conversations with real people can provide a ton of valuable insights, there are ways to get additional data and make this process more valuable and streamlined. There are two great places to “listen” to consumers: search engines and social media.

1. Use keyword research tools

SEO tools are great places to start as you seek to determine market demand. Keyword Surfer is a free Google Chrome add-on from Surfer SEO that provides insights from search engine result pages (SERPs) directly—no dashboard or login required.

It gives you search volume, keyword suggestions, and estimated organic traffic for all ranked pages. You can get a lay of the land before doubling down on a product idea inspired by search trends.

You can also find inspiration in Google Trends , another free tool to help you find market demand. Use it by typing in keywords, phrases, and topics to see how frequently users search these and related terms. You can filter by time period, country, and even city.

Much like the trending countries, the specific cities searching for your potential product give you insight into the distribution of interest and inform where you should focus your marketing efforts. Also check out Google’s Trending Now page for emerging topics.

Google Keyword Planner is another free SEO tool to help you with your discovery. You’ll need to open a free Google Ads account to access it. Keyword Planner allows you to determine the average monthly search volume on Google for a search term and related terms. If you type “iPhone accessories,” Keyword Planner gives you a list of similar keywords that can serve as inspiration for product ideas and validation for market demand.

For your own market demand research, use the targeting settings to get data from your intended market. You want to make sure you’re targeting the countries you plan to sell to.

In your list of results, there are three things to pay attention to:

  • Long-tail keywords. Long-tail keywords are keywords that are made up of three or more words. You’re not just looking for long-tail keywords, but long tails that are closely related to your product and niche. 
  • High search volume. Look at long-tail keywords that have a decent search volume each month. Higher search volume means more people are looking for your potential product. This can start to give you a good understanding of how in-demand your product is.
  • Competition. This column refers to how many other people are actively bidding for and competing to show up in queries related to that keyword. Low competition generally means that it would be easier to rank for these keywords and cheaper to purchase ads based on these keywords.

There is no minimum number of relevant searches per month, but it’s important to recognize the current potential. It’s also relative to other product ideas and keywords.

2. Use social listening tools

Social listening involves aggregating data from social media conversations about products, industries, and brands.

Many tools allow you to filter conversations, target specific geographic locations, and pull summarized analytics reports you can use in combination with other data. Each tool works differently but they all accomplish the same thing when it comes to researching market demand.

Essentially, you’ll enter a few keywords and the tool will pull social media posts that mention or are relevant to that keyword. You can see what the sentiment is, where people are talking about it, and even what they’re actually saying about it. This will give you valuable qualitative data to support your keyword research .

3. Look at data and market trends

Market demand is about more than just calculating interest in a product. It’s also about understanding how much product your target market will purchase and at what price point.

Refer to industry reports, case studies, and market publications to get information about product sales. A good old-fashioned Google search is also a great starting point. If you search “how many people purchase dog food?” several reports will be returned, giving you an indication of spending in the pet category.

If you’re looking to start a pet business selling dog food, you could use this data as a starting point to estimate the potential market demand, and then drill down further into pet categories relevant to your idea to get a better estimate.

Understanding the effects of pricing on market demand is also a critical step. Competitive analysis during your research will help you determine the retail prices of products in your market. 

Calculate market demand for your product

Ready to put all this information to work? In this hypothetical example, say you want to sell “Taylor Swift iPhone cases,” which was a long-tail keyword found in Google’s Keyword Planner when you searched “iPhone accessories.”

A quick look on Google Shopping shows these phone cases go for anywhere from less than $3 to as much as $64 each. Now, look at individual demand. How many Taylor Swift iPhone cases do people buy and at what price level? 

Sample customer Riley likes to switch out their phone case frequently—and they also break it a lot. They typically buy a new iPhone case every month—over the course of a year, six of those feature Taylor Swift. The second customer, Sandra, makes her cases last longer, so she only buys two a year. Both of those are Taylor Swift cases.

However, as the price is adjusted, this influences both Riley and Sandra’s behavior. As prices rise, both will likely purchase iPhone cases less frequently.

Here’s what the market demand schedule looks like for a full year:

Notice how as prices go up, demand goes down. That’s pretty much universal for all products and all markets (though there are always exceptions).

Now you figure out the market demand function, which is the total quantity of a product demanded by all individuals at each price. In this case, for every dollar you increase price, the demand decreases by 0.6 units. 

To get an idea of total market demand, repeat the above process for each customer type.

As a great example of how market demand can be impacted by world events, take Encircled’ s experience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, demand spiked for non-surgical masks.

“We got involved in some products where we wouldn’t have necessarily launched them previously, but there was so much market demand,” says founder Kristi Soomer.

The product was a fit for Encircled’s operation, which was already producing sewn accessories in comfortable fabrics. And, because they acted quickly, the move paid off. 

“We were one of the first brands to move on that in Canada, and it got us the number one placement in SEO on Google for face masks,” says Kristi.

Yami and Anthony Rosemond took several approaches to validating their business idea and assessing market demand for French macarons in America. The couple used SEO tools to check keyword volume and competition in their target market but conducted additional market research to confirm their findings.

“We needed to see and meet people to observe the market and what people like,” says Anthony.

When Yami and Anthony launched Pastreez , they used farmers markets as a way to understand their customers.

“The farmers market was a test to see: Is there enough demand to focus only on the macarons? And if so, what are the flavors we should come out with?” says Anthony.

When you’re building a business plan, market research needs to happen pretty early in the process. It’s where you learn about your audience’s wants and needs and the financial trends in your industry, and where you combine the data, and uncover trends that tell you what customers want and how to provide it most effectively.

The results of that research and analysis will shape aspects of the rest of your business plan. Assessments of your market and competition inform critical decisions in areas such as product design or service offerings, price, marketing methods, and business location.

That means accurate and comprehensive market research matters. To be comprehensive, your information and analysis should answer every possible question about the market you plan to enter and the consumers you believe will buy your product or service, including (but not limited to):

• Demand: Do consumers want what you’re offering?

• Economic indicators: Do they have the money to buy your product/service?

• Pricing: How much will they pay for your product/service?

• Location: Where do they live, and where are they likely to make their purchases?

• Saturation: How many other options do they currently have for that product/service?

First Steps: Budget

You can spend a lot answering these questions. Many large businesses hire firms to do the research and analysis, employing large-scale surveys, focus groups and statistical models, among other methods. However, for entrepreneurs just starting out, marketing budgets are typically too slim to cover that kind of research.

So, the work needs to stay in-house and fit a small marketing budget. Affordable, effective market research is possible. It may not be as specific to your market as the big-budget stuff, but it can get you the information you need to work out a solid understanding of your market.

First Steps: Market-Research Objectives

Before you start your research and analysis, determine your objectives. Decide what you want to learn from the process. It will guide the data you search for and how you use it, so be specific. Write down actual goals – what would give you the most accurate, comprehensive and useful picture of your market? This could include areas such as demographics, competitor offerings and customer pain points.

First Steps: Research Terminology

In market research, you’re basically dealing with two types of research and two types of data:

• Primary research: This is research you perform yourself in order to get very specific insights into your very specific business. It includes methods such as surveys, interviews and direct observations (by visiting competitor locations, for instance). It can help you gather qualitative data. This is data that goes beyond statistics and market trends. It can tell you what your consumers want, what they don’t want and how they feel about your offerings.

• Secondary research: This is research other people have performed and analyzed. To conduct secondary research, you can visit government websites such as the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as private data collectors such as Google and market-research companies. It can help you gather quantitative data. This is generally statistical data and can reveal insights on consumer demographics, spending patterns, market trends and earnings projections.

Where To Start Your Market Research

There’s a ton of existing research out there, and a lot of it is totally free. The Small Business Administration website has a list of free government sources for various types of quantitative data, such as industry statistics, consumer demographics, consumer demand and spending, and sales indicators. Much of it comes from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A simple search will turn up enough places to start gathering secondary research to build a picture of your market.

With a good understanding of your market from secondary sources, you’re in a good position to know which types of primary research, if any, would be worth an investment of your time and energy. Maybe a well-designed survey completed by everyone you know could help fill in some holes.

You can also conduct primary research by visiting and speaking with your would-be competition and their customers; through crowdsourcing forums such as Quora, where you can glean raw data from comments and responses and post questions related to your product, service and market; on social-media websites such as Facebook, where you can parse conversations in relevant interest groups; and by reading product and service reviews on sites such as Amazon or Yelp.

Analyzing Your Market Research

Armed with all your data, you’ll draw conclusions that will help guide many of your business decisions.

But first, make sure all of your data will benefit those decisions. Don’t start analyzing until you weed out extraneous information that will waste your time and hinder focused insights. If it doesn’t relate directly to your business and your market, set it aside.

Then organize the relevant data into tables, graphs, lists and pie charts, and see what trends emerge. What do those trends mean for your business? Your product? Your location? Your planned promotions?

Be open to whatever the data tells you. Even if your research findings are unexpected, embrace them, and make any necessary adjustments. Listening to good market research can save you a lot of headaches down the road: The better you know your consumers, the better your chances of successfully selling to them.

  • Use the Internet : Since much of the market analysis section relies on raw data, the Internet is a great place to start. Demographic data can be gathered from the U.S. Census Bureau. A series of searches can uncover information on your competition, and you can conduct a portion of your market research online.
  • Be the Customer : One of the most effective ways to gauge opportunity among your target market is to look at your products and services through the eyes of a purchaser. Understanding your customers is the key to success for any startup. If you don’t have a deep understanding of who your customers are, you’ll have trouble developing products that truly fit their needs, and you’ll struggle to develop a successful marketing strategy.

This is where a market analysis comes in. It may sound like a daunting and complex process, but fortunately, it’s not.

What is a market analysis?

A market analysis is a thorough qualitative and quantitative assessment of the current market .

It helps you understand the volume and value of the market, potential customer segments and their buying patterns, the position of your competition, and the overall economic environment, including barriers to entry, and industry regulations.

Why you should conduct a market analysis

Whether you are writing a one-page plan or putting together a detailed business plan for a bank or other investor, a solid market analysis is expected. But, don’t just do a market analysis because you’re developing a plan. Do it because it will help you build a smarter strategy for growing your business.

Once you have in-depth knowledge of your market, you’ll be better positioned to develop products and services that your customers are going to love. And while diving into market research may seem like a daunting task it can be broken up into four simple elements:

  • Industry overview: You’ll describe the current state of your industry and where it is headed.
  • Target market: Who are your actual customers? You’ll detail how many of them are there, what their needs are, and describe their demographics.
  • Competition: Describe your competitors’ positioning, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Pricing and forecast: Your pricing will help determine how you position your company in the market, and your forecast will show what portion of the market you hope to get.

How to conduct a market analysis

Now, let’s go into each step in more detail so you know exactly what you need for your market analysis.

1.  Industry overview

In this step, you’ll describe your industry and discuss the direction that it’s headed. You’ll want to include key industry metrics such as size, trends, and projected growth.

Industry research and analysis is different than market research . When you’re researching your industry, you’re looking at all of the businesses like yours. This is different than market research, where you are learning about your customers.

Your industry overview shows investors that you understand the larger landscape that you are competing in. More importantly, it helps you understand if there’s going to be more demand for your products in the future and how competitive the industry is likely to be.

For example, if you are selling mobile phones, you’ll want to know if the demand for mobile phones is growing or shrinking. If you’re opening a restaurant, you’ll want to understand the larger trends of dining out. Are people eating at restaurants more and more over time? Or is the market potentially shrinking as consumers take advantage of grocery delivery services?

If you’re in the United States, the U.S. Census has excellent industry data available . I’ve also found Statista to be useful. You should also look up your industry association—they often have a wealth of information on the trends in your industry.

2. Define your target market

Your target market is the most important section of your industry analysis. This is where you explain who your ideal customer is.

You may find that through the course of your analysis, that you identify different types of customers. When you have more than one type of customer, you do what’s called market segmentation. This is where you group similar types of customers into segments and describe the attributes of each segment.

You’ll need to start broadly and refine your research by defining the following elements.

Market size

Unlike industry size, which is usually measured in dollars, your market size is how many potential customers there are for your product or service. We’ve got a great method for figuring out your market size that you can read about here .

Demographics

Describe your customer’s typical age, gender, education, income, and more. If you could paint a picture of your perfect customer, this is where you’ll describe what they look like.

Where are your customers located? A specific country, region, state, city, county, you’ll want to describe that here. You may even find that your customer base is segmented based on location which can help you determine where you’ll be doing business.

Psychographics

It’s here that you need to get inside the mindset of your customers, know their needs, and how they’ll react. What are your customers’ likes and dislikes? How do they live? What’s their personality?

This piece can even help you better approach analyzing the competition.

This is essentially an extension of some of your psychographic information. Explain how your customers shop for and purchase products like yours.

Customer behavior is always changing. If there are trends that you’ve noticed with your target market, detail them here.

3. Competition

Your market analysis isn’t complete without thinking about your competition . Beyond knowing what other businesses you are competing with, a good competitive analysis will point out competitors’ weaknesses that you can take advantage of. With this knowledge, you can differentiate yourself by offering products and services that fill gaps that competitors have not addressed.

When you are analyzing the competition, you should take a look at the following areas.

Direct competition

These are companies that are offering very similar products and services. Your potential customers are probably currently buying from these companies.

Indirect competitors

Think of indirect competition as alternative solutions to the problem you are solving. This is particularly useful and important for companies that are inventing brand new products or services. For example, the first online task management software wasn’t competing with other online task managers—it was competing with paper planners, sticky notes, and other analog to-do lists.

How you’re different

You don’t want to be the same as the competition. Make sure to discuss how your company, product, or service is different than what the competition is offering. For a common business type, such as hair salons, your differentiation might be location, hours, types of services, ambiance, or price.

Barriers to entry

Describe what protections you have in place to prevent new companies from competing with you. Maybe you have a great location, or perhaps you have patents that help protect your business.

The best way to research your competition is to talk to your prospective customers and ask them who they are currently buying from and what alternate solutions they are using to solve the problem you are solving. Of course, spending some time on Google to figure out what else is out there is a great idea as well.

4. Pricing and forecast

The final step in a market analysis is to figure out your pricing and create a sales forecast to better understand what portion of the market you think you can get.

Pricing your product or service

First, think about your pricing . Of course, you should ensure that your price is more than what it costs you to make and deliver your product or service. But, beyond that, think about the message that your price sends to consumers.

Customers usually link high prices to quality. But, if you are pricing on the higher end of the spectrum, you need to make sure the rest of your marketing is also signaling that you are delivering a high-quality product or service. From what your business looks like to its logo and customer service experience, high-prices should come with a high-quality experience during the entire sales process.

On the other end of the spectrum, maybe you’re competing as a low-priced alternative to other products or businesses. If that’s the case, make sure your marketing and other messaging are also delivering that same, unified message.

Forecasting for initial sales volume

Once you have an idea of your pricing, think about how much you expect to sell. Your industry research will come into play here as you think about how much of the overall market you expect to capture. For example, if you’re opening a new type of grocery store, you’ll want to know how much people spend on groceries in your area. Your forecast should reflect a realistic portion of that total spend. It’s probably not realistic to gain 50 percent of the market within your first year.

However, don’t make the mistake of assuming that you can easily get 1 percent of a very large market. 1 percent of a 3 billion dollar market is still $30 million and even though 1 percent seems like a small, attainable number, you need to understand and explain how you will actually acquire that volume of customers.

When you build your forecast, use it as a goal for your business and track your actual sales compared to what you had hoped you would sell. Imagine your dream is to own a diner.

You have restaurant experience and a great location in mind – you just need the bank to approve your loan to get started.

But the bank has questions. A big one it wants answered is: who is your target market?

It might be tempting just to say, “hungry diners.” But you’ll need to dig deeper to truly define your target market . 

In this article, we’ll use this diner scenario to walk through the market research process and illustrate what the final result could look like.

  • Questions about your target market

Before you even set foot in the bank, you should already have asked – and taken steps to answer – several key questions about your target market.

Let’s call our example business the Bplans Diner. Where is that perfect location you’ve found for the diner? Is it in a densely populated urban area, suburban neighborhood, or rural?

What are your hours of operation? Some diners cater to a breakfast crowd, while others might offer 24-hour dining to be a favorite among night owls. When you expect your peak hours could help determine whether you should expect to sell more omelets or hamburgers.

What’s the area’s median income, and what types of businesses or institutions are nearby? This information will help you determine pricing and marketing strategies for your diner. For instance, if your diner is located in a business district, you may want to offer lunch specials. But if it’s near a college or university, you might want to offer student discounts.

This is what a thorough target market analysis looks like, providing key insights and data to pinpoint the specific groups of customers most likely to patronize your diner. Gathering all of this information may sound intimidating, but it’s really just a matter of doing research. Let’s look at an example of a target market analysis for this diner. Then, we’ll break it down and discuss each element in detail.

  • Example of a target market analysis

As you can see, the target market analysis follows the basic market segmentation process of splitting out potential customers into their demographic, geographic, psychographic and behavioral traits.

Next, let’s take a look at each in more detail. Afterward, we’ll look at how you can harness your target market analysis into actual business strategies.

  • Demographic

You may have noticed that the demographic analysis in our example is very broad – 18 to 65 years old, including students, workers, and some seniors.

Finding your target market isn’t always about identifying a narrow demographic to cater to. In the case of a restaurant, it makes sense to focus on the geographic location and who currently frequents the area (more on that in the next section).

A different approach may be needed for a technology product that’s sold online. In that case, narrowing the demographic focus to specific age ranges or needs would be much more important than where the business is located.

In the case of the diner, we reached our decision by conducting a demographic analysis, examining the age ranges, occupations, and other concrete data points about potential customers near the proposed location (Reminder: we didn’t do this for the Bplans Diner, we’re just providing an example). 

There are several ways to go about collecting this information for your business. The most straightforward is to get out in the neighborhood, take a look around and talk to people. Are you mostly seeing students, or families? Are there a lot of office workers in the area? 

You can also look up data from the U.S. Census Bureau , which includes population, age, income and other useful information, often down to the neighborhood level.

After conducting this research, one valuable step is to create a detailed customer persona that represents the typical customer you expect for your business (we provide an example of a customer persona for the diner further down in this article).

While the demographic analysis considers the type of people who might frequent your business, the geographic analysis considers the characteristics of the neighborhood itself. 

Our target market analysis for Bplans Diner noted that we plan to operate in an urban area near a university with heavy foot traffic and expect a fair amount of late-night diners.

A key reason for examining the geographic makeup of your businesses is to size up your competition. If there’s already a popular diner in the area you plan to target, getting customers could be a major challenge. But if there’s a lack of dining options or no one is serving diner-style food, you’re more likely to be successful. Determining the size of your market will help you create reasonable revenue projections. 

We also mentioned the plan for Bplans Diner to cater to a late-night crowd. Examining the geographic makeup of the neighborhood will help you determine if there are the kinds of businesses – bars, music venues, or businesses such as hospitals where people are working all hours – to justify targeting this group.

  • Psychographic

You know the demographics and geographic characteristics of your market. Now it’s time to consider the attitudes and values of your potential customers.

The psychographic analysis helps to understand the lifestyle of potential customers and how that might affect their preferences as consumers. If many of your potential customers are health-conscious, for instance, you’ll want to ensure your diner provides options like salads or gluten-free menu items. But if most customers are families looking for a place to bring their children, it may be important to keep classic items like hamburgers and french fries on the menu.

The best way to understand your potential customers’ attitudes is to get out and talk to them. Customer interviews are among the most powerful methods of validating a business idea , since you’ll get honest, real-time feedback from the kinds of people your business would depend on.

Finally, the behavioral analysis expands on customer psychographics by examining what customers do, given their values. This is another place where it’s worth considering the broad demographics of the diner’s target market – 18 to 65 years old, split among students, workers, and seniors.

They may all want the diner’s food, but their behaviors will vary widely. College students might be looking for a late-night study spot, or a place to meet up with friends for dinner before a concert or sporting event. But workers and seniors might be more interested in breakfast or lunch specials. 

Each of these behaviors gives a business owner valuable information to target individual segments of their target audience. For instance, you might want to play popular music in the evenings to get young diners ready for a night out on the town. But you’ll want a quieter ambiance at the time of day when seniors are most likely to come in. The environment can be adjusted based on when certain customers frequent the business.

Addressing behavioral aspects like buying motivations and concerns of your potential customers will also help you effectively market your diner. For example, you could create marketing campaigns based on student discounts, late-night specials, or a family-friendly atmosphere, depending on your customers’ behaviors.

This is the part of your business plan where you really get to shine and show off that awesome idea you have. Of course, your product or service is the best! Now, let’s talk about how you know it’s a hit. Be prepared to show you know your market AND that it’s big enough for you to build a sustainable, successful business .

In writing up your market analysis, you’ll get to demonstrate the knowledge you’ve gained about the industry, the target market you’re planning to sell to, your competition, and how you plan to make yourself stand out.

A market analysis is just that: a look at what the relevant business environment is and where you fit in. It should give a potential lender, investor, or employee no doubt that there is a solid niche for what you’re offering, and you are definitely the person to fill it. It’s both quantitative, spelling out sales projections and other pertinent figures, and qualitative, giving a thoughtful overview of how you fit in with the competition. It needs to look into the potential size of the market, the possible customers you’ll target, and what kind of difficulties you might face as you try to become successful. Let’s break down how to do that.

What Goes Into A Business Plan Market Analysis?

Industry description and outlook.

Describe the industry with enough background so that someone who isn’t familiar with it can understand what it’s like, what the challenges are, and what the outlook is. Talk about its size, how it’s growing, and what the outlook is for the future.

Target Market

Who have you identified as your ideal client or customer ? Include demographic information on the group you’re targeting, including age, gender and income level. This is the place to talk about the size of your potential market, how much it might spend, and how you’ll reach potential customers. For example, if women aged 18 to 54 are your target market, you need to know how many of them there are in your market. Are there 500 or 500,000? It’s imperative to know. Similarly, if your product or service is geared toward a high-end clientele, you need to make sure you’re located in an area that can support it.

Market Need

What factors influence the need for your product or service? Did the need exist before or are you trying to create it? Why will customers want to do business with you, possibly choosing you over someone else? This is where you can briefly introduce the competitive edge you have, although you’ll get into that in more depth in following sections. Focus on how the product or service you’re offering satisfies what’s needed in the market.

Market Growth

While no one can predict the future, it’s important to get a possible idea of what business may be like down the road and make sales projections. Have the number of people in your target market been increasing or decreasing over the last several years? By how much per year? To make an intelligent forecast, you have to start with current conditions, then project changes over the next three to five years.

Market Trends

You need to take a look at trends the same way you look at population and demographics. Is there a shift to more natural or organic ingredients that might impact your business? How might energy prices figure in? The easy availability of the internet and smartphone technology? The questions will be different for every type of business, but it’s important to think about the types of changes that could affect your specific market. In this section, you can cite experts from the research you’ve done-a market expert, market research firm, trade association, or credible journalist.

Market Research Testing

Talk about what kind of testing and information gathering you’ve done to figure out where you stand in the market. Who have you spoken to about the viability of your product? Why are you confident of its success? Again, if you can, cite experts to back up your information.

Competitive Analysis

There’s no way to succeed unless you’ve examined your competition. It might be helpful to try analyzing your position in the market by performing a SWOT analysis. You need to figure out their strengths and the weaknesses you can exploit as you work to build your own business. You do need to be brutally honest here, and also look at what the potential roadblocks are-anything that might potentially stand in your way as you try to meet your goals and grow your business.

Barriers to Entry

Lenders and investors need to have a reasonable assurance they’ll be paid back, so they’ll want to know what would stop someone else from swooping in, doing what you do, and grabbing half the available business. Do you have technical knowledge that’s difficult to get? A specialized product no one else can manufacture? A service that takes years to perfect? It’s possible your industry has strict regulations and licensing requirements. All of these help protect you from new competition, and they’re all selling points for you.

Regulations

As we touched on above, you should cover regulations as a barrier to entry. If your field is covered by regulations, you do need to talk about how they apply to your business and how you’ll comply with them.

Six Sources for Market Analysis Information

The Market Analysis section of your business plan is far more than a theoretical exercise. Doing an analysis of the market really gives YOU the information you need to figure out whether your plans are viable, and tweak them in the early stages before you go wrong.

So, where do you start? Research is the key here, and there are several sources available.

1. The Internet

Some of the first information you need is about population and demographics: who your potential customers are, how many there are, and where they live or work. The U.S. Census Bureau has an impressive amount of these statistics available. USA.gov’s small business site is another good source for links to the U.S. Departments of Labor and Commerce, among others.

2. Local Chamber of Commerce

A lot of local information can be gotten from the chamber of commerce in the area where you plan to operate. Often, they can provide details into what the general business climate is like, and get even more specific about how many and what type of businesses are operating in their jurisdiction.

3. Other Resources

When actual statistical information isn’t available, you’ll often be able to put together a good picture of the market from a variety of other sources. Real estate agents can be a source of information on demographics and population trends in an area. Catalogs and marketing materials from your competition are useful. Many industry associations have a great amount of relevant information to use in putting your analysis together. Trade publications and annual reports from public corporations in your industry also contain a wealth of relevant information.

4. Customer Mindset

Take yourself out of the equation as the owner and stand in your customer’s shoes when you look at the business. As a customer, what problems do you have that need to be solved? What would you like to be able to do better, faster, or cheaper that you can’t do now? How does the competition work to solve those issues? How could this business solve them better?

5. the Competition

If you have a clothing store, visit others in your area. If you’d like to open a pizzeria, try pies from surrounding restaurants. If you’re a salon owner, park across the street and see what the store traffic is like and how customers look when they come out. Check out websites for pricing and other marketing information. Follow their Facebook pages. If you can’t be a customer of the competition, ask your customers and suppliers about them. Always be aware of what’s going on in the market.

6. Traditional Market Research

While you can gather a lot of data online, your best information will come from potential customers themselves. Send out surveys, ask for input and feedback, and conduct focus groups. You can do this yourself or hire a market research firm to do it for you.

What to Do With All That Data

Now that you’ve gathered the statistics and information and you’ve done the math to know there’s a need and customer base for your product or service, you have to show it off to your best advantage. You can start the market analysis section with a simple summary that describes your target customers and explains why you have chosen this as your market. You can also summarize how you see the market growing, and highlight one or two projections for the future.

If your information is dense with numbers and statistics, someone who reads your business plan will probably find it easier to understand if you present it as a chart or graph. You can generate them fairly easily with tools built into Google docs and free infographic apps and software .

Don’t assume that your readers have an understanding of your market, but don’t belabor simple points, either. You want to include pertinent, important information, but you don’t want to drown the reader in facts. Be concise and compelling with the market analysis, and remember that a good graphic can cover a lot of text, and help you make your point. It’s great to say you project sales to increase by 250% over the next five years, but it makes an even bigger wow when you show it in a graphic.

1. Start with a problem, not a product

As a leader on our research team, Chelsea analyzes how Mailchimp can help small businesses, as well as what small businesses are doing to help themselves. She's an advocate for market research that begins by identifying a problem rather than a product.

"We go out into the field to talk to small businesses, entrepreneurs , startups, and our service partners who work with small businesses, startups, entrepreneurs, and such. And we just listen," she says. "A lot of times, that uncovers a demand or a signal of demand for a challenge they have or a frustration point, maybe not just with our product but in doing their job."

This research informs the products that Mailchimp builds, and that's been the case from the beginning. The founders actually began as a web design company called the Rocket Science Group, and their focus was on serving big, corporate clients. But as they sought work, talked to people, and started to collect data on what they were doing, they noticed a glaring gap in the market. What they discovered was market demand for an accessible email marketing software that small businesses could use. Mailchimp was born. The business grew steadily, and now we offer way more than email in response to the market's evolving demand.

So once you've identified a problem you think your business could solve take a look at what already exists in your potential market. You need to know:

  • Is there evidence for a problem that your concept might solve?
  • Who else is trying to solve this problem?
  • Who is doing it well?
  • Within your market, what doesn't seem to work?

2. Gather qualitative insights

When you know what exists in the market, if there is one, you can start to collect more qualitative data. Start within your own network—try talking with friends or colleagues about the solution you hope your business offers, as well as their own experience with the identified problem. Their reactions can help you develop your concept, and they may point you in the direction of other people with valuable insights.

Outside of your personal relationships, you can also use social networks to find people who you think are in your target demographic. "You can find a captive audience on social media ," says Chelsea. During this qualitative analysis, you'll listen for a challenge or frustration point that your business could solve, as well as some indication of what it would need to do so.

Tip: Don't do focus groups. Chelsea suggests talking to people 1-on-1 or in small, comfortable groups. That way, they'll be more inclined to share. Also, by asking open-ended questions you can avoid confirmation bias and get a more honest insight into what matters to them.

3. Back your narrative with numbers

As you conduct interviews, a narrative about market demand should emerge. You can begin to imagine and describe your product or service based on those conversations. After that: You need quantitative data. "You always want to quantify market demand," says Chelsea. "It can't just be a series of conversations. It can in the early days—but eventually you want to know numbers."

At Mailchimp, numbers around market demand are often generated through surveys.

Send a survey to as large a targeted sample as you can find—meaning, as many people as you can access who have demonstrated interest in this market or niche. Ask them to rank on a scale of 1-5:

  • How important is finding a solution to this problem?
  • How much would it help you?
  • How upset would you be if this solution went away?
  • How willing are you to pay for a solution to this problem?

Chelsea recommends tools like SurveyMonkey , which make it easy to conduct these surveys, as well as to analyze the results. The hope, of course, is that your hypothesized problem and solution will stand out as the highest ranking. 4. Create an offering that sells

Once you've collected qualitative and quantitative data, it's time to develop your product. That might begin with a sketch, prototype, or a trial of some sort.

And with each more fully developed iteration of what you plan to sell , check back in with your audience. Ask:

  • How close is this to what you're looking for?
  • How likely would you be to buy it?
  • How much would you pay for it?

Business Plan Demand Analysis, Four Things to Consider

Small businesses and entrepreneurs use demand analysis to:

  • Consider substitute products and services
  • Get input from (potential) customers
  • Determine what “drives” demand
  • Understand what variables affect demand and to what degree

Demand analysis is about challenging your preconceived notions regarding your product/service. A stress test, if you will. A demand analysis will take your idea and start molding it into something that has even higher potential.

As an entrepreneur, you can’t be too stubborn. You have to be flexible. After going through this process, the hope is that you’ll come out the other end with an even more refined idea and a greater chance at success.

Business plan demand analysis of the total market

When first thinking about the market for your product/service, don’t define it too narrowly. Try to think of substitutions that you might not have otherwise considered. No, you might not compete directly with these substitute products, but the presence of substitute products will have an impact on your pricing and demand.

Pricing too high could push customers to these substitute products. Even if that pricing seems in line with your value proposition when compared to direct competitors. But, theoretically, the amount demanded changes (inversely) with the price. A higher price will push customers to consider alternatives. A lower price should result in a higher volume sold.

Further defining the market for my product

As I mentioned in my first business plan post on the topic of demographics, I am working alongside you. I have a prospective product that I would like to explore the viability of, and I am creating a business plan for this product as I write these posts. As a reminder, my potential product is an all-natural hair-thickening topical supplement.

Anyhow, in the previous post, I used “customer avatars” to roughly ascertain the size of my market. I think I was fairly liberal in that estimation. The three of my avatars that were the most detailed totaled approximately 5.2 million people. The avatar that was broader included 6.5 million people.

Substitute products

As mentioned above, I have to keep in mind that not all of these people will pursue hair loss treatment. Many, will just accept it as a normal part of aging. Others will choose to address the problem but will pursue an alternative treatment method to topical supplements. Some of these alternative treatment methods include:

  • Biotin, vitamin D, Viviscal, Nutrafol, Finasteride (Propecia), collagen powder, nutriceuticals, Spironolactone (Aldactone)
  • Toupees, hair fibers
  • Laser treatments, microneedling, hair transplants, protein-rich plasma injection
  • HairMax LaserComb, light treatment

In addition to substitutions, I have to consider the direct competition. The alternatives that are also topical. Those include:

  • Minoxidil (Rogaine), rosemary essential oil, pyrithione zinc shampoo, scalp tonic/serum

Obviously, there’s no shortage of alternatives to my prospective product. However, many of these treatments are ongoing and the potential exists for customers to combine them.

After listing these potential substitutions, it dawned on me that there are a couple of different classes of hair loss. I would probably target individuals that are in the early stages and are merely looking for help to slow down and, hopefully, somewhat reverse the initial effects of hair loss.

Another thing that dawned on me when researching substitutions is that it might be a mistake to only consider men when ascertaining the market for this product. Most of the results I found when searching “hair loss treatments” were articles targeted at women.

As I said, I’m taking this journey right along with you. So, I’m refining my idea and picking things up as I go along.

Gathering survey information for your business plan demand analysis

The next steps are mostly statistical. That might give you pause if numbers aren’t your thing.

I really do wish I could provide you with the handiest spreadsheet imaginable to manage the information you find. There are just too many variables, though. Different surveys asking different questions. Not to mention, every industry is going to address unrelated topics. I just couldn’t figure out how to make a one-size-fits-all tool.

What we’re going to do is compile whatever relevant statistical information we can get our hands-on, and interpret what we find. You can input this information into your own spreadsheet if you like

Statistical information, hopefully, can be obtained from a simple internet search. “[your topic/industry] survey results”, or something similar should yield some useful information. If you can’t find relevant info, then you might have to reach out to industry trade magazines or organizations.

As far as how much survey information to collect – there’s no clear answer. It depends, first and foremost, on the abundance of such information. If there is plenty available, then I guess I’d recommend collecting it until you’re tired of doing so. You can always circle back around and search for more specific results if you need to in the future.

What to focus on

Right now, focus on demographics information, substitute product information, and information about motivation (drivers).

This is where having it in a spreadsheet will come in handy. With the numbers in a spreadsheet, you can combine survey information and break it down as needed. Check out my example below to see what I mean.

Survey information about my product

There was no shortage of survey results regarding hair loss. In fact, I grew tired of collecting information well before I was able to read it all.

I must admit, I learned something on this step. I learned that it probably makes more sense to do this research before creating customer avatars rather than after .

This research showed me that hair loss in women is a considerably more prevalent problem than I knew. So, I should definitely not exclude women when trying to calculate the size of my target market. Additionally, I learned a lot more about the age that hair loss starts to affect men and women. Not to mention, a lot of other interesting tidbits related to marketing and substitute products.

I simply typed the figures I found into the cells and tried to organize it in a somewhat easy-to-read format.

To make this information as useful as possible, I also included a link to the survey – in case I wanted to reference it again. Also, I thought it would be useful to make note of the year the survey was conducted. That way, I could note trends, if any existed.

Finally, to top it all off, I put in some charts. Charts can help to illustrate ideas in a way that numbers can’t, sometimes.

Now, I have a nice little foundation of data to build my business plan off of. I also know that there is plenty of other information out there if I want to delve further on a specific topic.

Divide total industry demand into its main components.

Now, you want to start to organize the information you found in a logical manner.

First, isolate the information related to demographics or that which otherwise describes your potential customers to you. You want to break this information up so that you can get an idea of what your potential customers might look like. You should, hopefully, begin to see customer “avatars” take shape.

Yes, I asked you to create avatars in the previous post. As I said above, that was probably premature. It would make more sense to create the avatars with this survey information, then use the census/demographic information to estimate the size of the market based on what you found.

Live and learn…

After you have the demographic information in good order, move on to the “solution” information – if available. This is information that specifies how customers are solving their problem(s) now.

If you’re lucky, this information will join seamlessly with the demographic information you organized above.

Start with the simplest questions (those with the fewest variables) and expound from there.

What if my survey data is inconsistent?

You might run into a situation where you have conflicting information. Or you might find yourself in the fortunate situation where different surveys seem to corroborate the same statistics.

If your information sources don’t jive, you have a couple of options. First, you can move forward with the information you deem to be the most trustworthy. Or, alternatively, you can average what you found. This works well if the differing results are relatively close together. Finally, you can choose to use the data source that is most recent – particularly if your industry is especially dynamic.

All of your numbers aren’t going to jive up perfectly. However, at this point, you are armed with a lot better information than when you started. Better information will ultimately lead to better decisions.

Industry components for my product

Demographics.

For my part, I like to start simple and divide my demographics based on the variable with the fewest options. In this case, the simplest variable only has two choices – men and women.

From there, I used information that I found regarding the percentage of men and women that have had hair loss and have tried treatments.

Next, I break things down further based on the age that men and women started experiencing hair loss. I was fortunate to find information for both genders.

That’s the extent of demographic information I was able to obtain. I would have liked to have found some information regarding income or socioeconomic status. If that information proves to be critical as I move forward with my business plan, I’ll have to circle back around to see if I can track it down.

Once I felt good about my (revised) customer avatars, I moved on to “solution” information.

Again, thanks to the abundance of information I was able to find, I found similar questions for both genders. The first question was the simplest. It asked if the person with hair loss had done anything to address the problem.

From there, I had a couple of survey questions that explored the alternatives that hair loss sufferers had tried in the past. Additionally, I found results that gave insight into how effective these alternatives were.

When all was said and done, I had the groundwork laid for the ability to know how many potential customers I might have, their demographics, what they have tried so far, and how well those alternatives had addressed the issue at hand.

Here’s what my worksheet looks like after sorting my information into industry components:

Hopefully, in your search for survey results, you came across some information that provided insight into the “why people buy” question.

In particular, we’re looking for drivers of sales here. Specifically, what circumstances compel a customer to buy your product/service (or a substitute)? Hint: people usually buy to solve a problem. To avoid pain, not seek pleasure. Or, so I’ve been told…

Insight into what compels your customers to buy will not only be valuable in the drafting of the remainder of the business plan but in all your marketing efforts once you are up and running.

The information about who your customers are (from the previous step), why they buy, and what steps they are currently taking to solve their problems (also from the previous step) will hopefully paint a clear picture for you. A picture that will guide you to a point where you can position your strengths in a manner that will help other people’s weaknesses.

Understanding the drivers of demand for my product

Again, I was fortunate to have an abundance of survey information to draw from. A couple of my surveys not only touched on how hair loss made people feel but also on specific actions that they had taken before the hair loss started.

This information tells me an angle I can take when marketing my product, plus where a lot of my potential customers are going before they start to experience this problem. That place…the hairdresser.

Of course, that’s for women. Though there’s no rock-solid proof that it’s hairstyling that is contributing to hair loss in women, there is enough correlation to make a compelling case. For men, on the other hand, hair loss just seems to be the hand that most are dealt.

But, before we get into that, let’s look at some of the emotional drivers that might compel customers to purchase a topical hair loss supplement…

Drivers for men

On the “men” side I got information about how “worried” men were about hair loss. This told me that most men were, at least, “somewhat” worried about hair loss.

Beyond that, there was valuable information about how hair loss had affected them negatively.

Finally, the most valuable information, to me, was a question of what they would give up to solve this problem (men & women). The answers were encouraging for someone who was hoping to build a business in this industry. Almost half would rather have more hair than more money. Three quarters would give up a prized possession for more hair.

While I acknowledge that I’m not marketing a guaranteed cure to hair loss, that tells me that people are willing to try anything to fix this problem. As I know from my market segmentation analysis, supplementation works for about 1 in 17 people. Not great odds, by any means. But good enough, I hope, to at least try a new product. Especially when the ingredients are all-natural and offer no downside.

Drivers for women

About half had stress prior to experiencing hair loss. That’s a coin flip. It doesn’t mean that the hair loss was caused by the stress (though it surely didn’t help). But it provides insight into what women are feeling prior to and while they are experiencing this problem.

I also included the “What they’d give up” question on the women’s side of the analysis because my source for that information didn’t specify either gender. Plus, it seems feasible that women would feel the same or even stronger. It’s my opinion that society values female attractiveness above male attractiveness.

Finally, we get down to the brass tacks. A potential cause-and-effect situation for the problem I’m attempting to address. The number of women that are currently experiencing hair loss are also (possibly) straightening/heat processing or getting their hair colored on a semi-frequent basis.

This tells me that hairstyling might play a part in a lot of women’s hair loss (this goes back to the pressure to be attractive thing). Therefore, I should consider marketing my product in salons and other establishments that focus on women’s hair.

There’s still a lot of analysis to be done. But, two steps into the process of drafting my business plan, I feel a lot more confident about my understanding of the environment.

To this point, the goal has been to make assumptions and get answers. We want to have a better understanding of the environment in which our business will operate. Hopefully, you feel that you’ve accomplished that.

But, we don’t do ourselves any favors by lying to ourselves.

Well, yes. But probably not willingly.

You start off excited about your business idea. So excited that you decide to take the first step (something that the vast majority of people won’t do). You begin to write a business plan. You can feel your idea taking shape. You’ve already refined your idea a bit and feel that by the time this whole exercise is over, there’s no way you can fail. You’ve got momentum and your confidence keeps increasing.

That is all very good. Confidence is key. But, if everything looks rosy, you might be blind to a risk that could put your baby in jeopardy.

So, I don’t want to be a killjoy. But, for the sake of our businesses, let’s take a step back and play devil’s advocate. We need to ask ourselves some tough questions and challenge our assumptions. If we can rise to these challenges, and address them with confidence, our chances of success are that much greater.

Go back through your segmentation and demand drivers and think critically about this information. Some statistics might be a given, without much wiggle room. Others might be misrepresentative of reality. In these instances, tap into your inner cynic.

Make notes of what the worst-case scenario might look like. If you’re using a spreadsheet, like me, maybe use a different colored text. Address things like survey questions that might have been misinterpreted or alternative explanations for results.

Don’t get too down-and-out here and don’t dwell on this step too long. You don’t have to necessarily plan what you would do if these worst-case scenarios came to be. You just need to imagine them so that when the time comes for serious planning, you can take these risks into consideration.

Demand sensitivity for my product

I think my categorization by demographics is pretty safe. It’s rather well established how many men and women experience hair loss. The only thing that I might tweak is the number of men and women who have had hair loss and tried treatment. I lowered those estimates by 20%. It could be that the respondents’ interpretation of “treatment” is to comb their hair a different way or to shave their heads rather than to buy a product to battle hair loss.

Furthermore, what if the number of people that have “done anything” is lower? What if I misinterpreted the question for women that asked: “Do you take medication to prevent hair loss?” Maybe it was 20% of women who actually had hair loss rather than all women? The effect of that would be dramatic.

What if the alternative treatments were more effective than I’ve been led to believe? It could be that the respondents only consider “effective” to be a restoration to a full, thick head of hair? Also, just because they consider them ineffective, it doesn’t mean that they’ll stop using them. They might think that all of their hair will fall out if they stop (which could work in my favor, though). Perhaps they were overly optimistic when it came to supplements? It could be that supplements gave them other benefits, but didn’t make their hair loss any worse – so they considered them “effective.”

Could it be that fewer men are really “(very) worried about hair loss” than I’m led to believe? Are more are “Not worried at all?” Plus, it might be that those who are only “somewhat worried” aren’t motivated to do anything about it.

As far as confidence (love life, making friends, professional life) goes, it might be that that hair loss is a contributor to low confidence, but not the primary driver. Maybe they’re overweight or socially awkward and that’s why they lack the confidence they desire?

As far as “what they’d give up” it could be that the respondents were primed by the hair loss questionnaire to be more self-conscious than they usually are. If it came down to it, perhaps not so many would be willing to part with valuables to solve this problem.

Finally, as far as hair styling being a cause of hair loss in women, it could be that I am wrong. Maybe hair styling has no effect on hair loss. Or, maybe women overestimate how often they heat process or color their hair. It only feels like every day/once every 2-3 weeks. When, in fact, they do it a lot less often.

Okay, that’s enough pessimism. It seems unlikely that every worst-case scenario would be true. But, there’s probably a mix in there between my initial interpretations and the not-so-great ones.

What is a Business Plan?

A business plan is a document that contains the operational and financial plan of a business, and details how its objectives will be achieved. It serves as a road map for the business and can be used when pitching investors or financial institutions for debt or equity financing .

A business plan should follow a standard format and contain all the important business plan elements. Typically, it should present whatever information an investor or financial institution expects to see before providing financing to a business.

Contents of a Business Plan

A business plan should be structured in a way that it contains all the important information that investors are looking for. Here are the main sections of a business plan:

1. Title Page

The title page captures the legal information of the business, which includes the registered business name, physical address, phone number, email address, date, and the company logo.

2. Executive Summary

The executive summary is the most important section because it is the first section that investors and bankers see when they open the business plan. It provides a summary of the entire business plan. It should be written last to ensure that you don’t leave any details out. It must be short and to the point, and it should capture the reader’s attention. The executive summary should not exceed two pages.

3. Industry Overview

The industry overview section provides information about the specific industry that the business operates in. Some of the information provided in this section includes major competitors, industry trends, and estimated revenues. It also shows the company’s position in the industry and how it will compete in the market against other major players.

4. Market Analysis and Competition

The market analysis section details the target market for the company’s product offerings. This section confirms that the company understands the market and that it has already analyzed the existing market to determine that there is adequate demand to support its proposed business model.

Market analysis includes information about the target market’s demographics , geographical location, consumer behavior, and market needs. The company can present numbers and sources to give an overview of the target market size.

A business can choose to consolidate the market analysis and competition analysis into one section or present them as two separate sections.

5. Sales and Marketing Plan

The sales and marketing plan details how the company plans to sell its products to the target market. It attempts to present the business’s unique selling proposition and the channels it will use to sell its goods and services. It details the company’s advertising and promotion activities, pricing strategy, sales and distribution methods, and after-sales support.

6. Management Plan

The management plan provides an outline of the company’s legal structure, its management team, and internal and external human resource requirements. It should list the number of employees that will be needed and the remuneration to be paid to each of the employees.

Any external professionals, such as lawyers, valuers, architects, and consultants, that the company will need should also be included. If the company intends to use the business plan to source funding from investors, it should list the members of the executive team, as well as the members of the advisory board.

7. Operating Plan

The operating plan provides an overview of the company’s physical requirements, such as office space, machinery, labor, supplies, and inventory . For a business that requires custom warehouses and specialized equipment, the operating plan will be more detailed, as compared to, say, a home-based consulting business. If the business plan is for a manufacturing company, it will include information on raw material requirements and the supply chain.

8. Financial Plan

The financial plan is an important section that will often determine whether the business will obtain required financing from financial institutions, investors, or venture capitalists. It should demonstrate that the proposed business is viable and will return enough revenues to be able to meet its financial obligations. Some of the information contained in the financial plan includes a projected income statement , balance sheet, and cash flow.

9. Appendices and Exhibits

The appendices and exhibits part is the last section of a business plan. It includes any additional information that banks and investors may be interested in or that adds credibility to the business. Some of the information that may be included in the appendices section includes office/building plans, detailed market research , products/services offering information, marketing brochures, and credit histories of the promoters.

Here is a basic template that any business can use when developing its business plan:

Section 1: Executive Summary

  • Present the company’s mission.
  • Describe the company’s product and/or service offerings.
  • Give a summary of the target market and its demographics.
  • Summarize the industry competition and how the company will capture a share of the available market.
  • Give a summary of the operational plan, such as inventory, office and labor, and equipment requirements.

Section 2: Industry Overview

  • Describe the company’s position in the industry.
  • Describe the existing competition and the major players in the industry.
  • Provide information about the industry that the business will operate in, estimated revenues, industry trends, government influences, as well as the demographics of the target market.

Section 3: Market Analysis and Competition

  • Define your target market, their needs, and their geographical location.
  • Describe the size of the market, the units of the company’s products that potential customers may buy, and the market changes that may occur due to overall economic changes.
  • Give an overview of the estimated sales volume vis-à-vis what competitors sell.
  • Give a plan on how the company plans to combat the existing competition to gain and retain market share.

Section 4: Sales and Marketing Plan

  • Describe the products that the company will offer for sale and its unique selling proposition.
  • List the different advertising platforms that the business will use to get its message to customers.
  • Describe how the business plans to price its products in a way that allows it to make a profit.
  • Give details on how the company’s products will be distributed to the target market and the shipping method.

Section 5: Management Plan

  • Describe the organizational structure of the company.
  • List the owners of the company and their ownership percentages.
  • List the key executives, their roles, and remuneration.
  • List any internal and external professionals that the company plans to hire, and how they will be compensated.
  • Include a list of the members of the advisory board, if available.

Section 6: Operating Plan

  • Describe the location of the business, including office and warehouse requirements.
  • Describe the labor requirement of the company. Outline the number of staff that the company needs, their roles, skills training needed, and employee tenures (full-time or part-time).
  • Describe the manufacturing process, and the time it will take to produce one unit of a product.
  • Describe the equipment and machinery requirements, and if the company will lease or purchase equipment and machinery, and the related costs that the company estimates it will incur.
  • Provide a list of raw material requirements, how they will be sourced, and the main suppliers that will supply the required inputs.

Section 7: Financial Plan

  • Describe the financial projections of the company, by including the projected income statement, projected cash flow statement, and the balance sheet projection.

Section 8: Appendices and Exhibits

  • Quotes of building and machinery leases
  • Proposed office and warehouse plan
  • Market research and a summary of the target market
  • Credit information of the owners
  • List of product and/or services

Students in the Daniels College of Business are no strangers to using case studies to learn, but Michael Myers, associate teaching professor and academic director of the MBA program, decided to take it a step further: Why not give students the chance to collaborate with DU researchers on marketing real-world products created right here on campus?

For two students in the Professional Master of Business Administration (PMBA) program , that led to working with Mohammad Mahoor, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science , to help him market a robot he developed to benefit children with autism spectrum disorders.

Much of Mahoor’s research focuses on computer vision, machine learning and algorithm development with the goal of developing social robots—automatons that can socially interact with humans, potentially offering a wide range of beneficial uses. Previously, Mahoor and his fellow researchers developed Ryan, a companion robot designed to assist patients with Alzheimer’s .

When Myers partnered with Mahoor to bring the project into his classroom, it drew the attention of Jacquelin Lalor, who has a background in school nursing, and Ashley Hill, assistant director of Equity Labs at DU. Both were immediately interested, says Lalor. “ I think it was a perfect fit . It touched on some things that were important to us.”

The two were tasked with developing a marketing plan and began by researching the existing market, potential demand and competing products, among numerous other factors. “Then, we did a lot of research around the audience—who uses the product that you're developing the marketing plan for? The user drives a majority of the way that the rest of the plan is set up,” says Hill. With a thorough understanding of the market, the product and the audience, they developed and presented a go-to-market plan in the spring quarter.

The opportunity to do real, meaningful work with researchers across the disciplines made the project even more impactful, Lalor says. “The integration and collaboration between different segments in the university was really exciting as an MBA student,” she says. “We do a lot of case studies, but this is personal. We met these people; we know what their work is—that's very different than reading and responding to a case study.” And for Hill, balancing the needs of a multi-faceted audience and user base was both interesting and challenging. Compared to other coursework, she says, “this was very multi-dimensional in a lot of different ways.”

Beyond gaining practical skills and real-world experience, Hill adds, collaborating with faculty whose research is focused on the public good was rewarding. “They want to help people and do research that is meaningful, important and generative. They’re looking for a better future. It was really refreshing and inspiring for me to be in conversation with this internal team and with Dr. Mahoor’s folks and to know that that alignment is out there,” she says.

For Myers, the project was part of a push to provide students opportunities to work with intellectual property, gaining valuable, real-world skills and knowledge, which he says is crucial for preparing students for their careers. “In the business school, we fight to bring reality in—because abstraction doesn't help,” he says. “That's what this type of project brings to students.”

Myers hopes to continue providing his students with these types of experiences. “The buffet is open. We would like [faculty] to come and bring projects in—and we will help you execute,” he says. “If you have a need, I've got a small army of brilliant students who will do great work.”

The global oil market could run into a supply shortage as peak demand is still a decade away, according to Goldman Sachs analysts.

The investment bank estimated the world's oil demand would continue to rise for at least the next 10 years, with crude demand peaking at around 110 million barrels a day in 2034. That's due to rising oil demand in Asia and increasing demand for petroleum products, the analysts said.

Rising demand could spark a supply shortage, especially if companies continue to dial back on capital expenditures, the bank added. Spending by six major oil producers, including ExxonMobil and Chevron, could fall as much as $3.8 billion this year, according to a survey conducted by Oil & Gas Journal .

"We think peak demand is another decade away, and more importantly, after the decade it takes to peak, it plateaus, rather than sharply declines, for another few years," Nikhil Bhandari, a managing director at Goldman, and Amber Cai, an analyst at the bank, said in a recent report. "While peak oil demand is still a decade away, capital is slowing for the production of crude oil and oil products, contributing to constrained supply in the medium term," they later added.

Oil prices slumped at the end of 2023, in part due to booming crude production in the US and other countries . But US production is set to see a slowdown , with the US Energy Information Agency forecasting domestic crude production to grow by just 2% from levels in 2023.

Other oil producers are continuing to pull back on production, too. OPEC+, the oil cartel led by Saudi Arabia, has decided to extend its 2.2 million barrel-a-day supply cut into 2025, according to a release from its last meeting.

Oil prices have climbed higher over the past month as markets weigh the supply and demand outlook. Brent crude has surged 8% from its low in early June, trading around $84.51 a barrel on Monday.

Home prices have held up better than expected amid high interest rates. But that doesn’t mean the housing market is healthy.

When the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates in 2022, most economists thought the housing market would be the first to suffer the consequences: Higher borrowing costs would make it more expensive to buy and to build, leading to reduced demand, less construction and lower prices.

They were right — at first. Construction slowed, but then picked up. Prices hiccuped, then resumed their upward march. Higher rates made homes harder to afford, but Americans still wanted to buy them.

The result is a housing market that is different, and stranger, than the one described in economics textbooks. Parts have proved surprisingly resilient. Other parts have seized up almost completely. And some seem perched on a precipice, at risk of tumbling if rates stay high too long or the economy weakens unexpectedly.

It is also a market of stark divides. People who locked in low rates before 2022 have, in most cases, had their home values soar but have been insulated from higher borrowing costs. Those who didn’t already own, on the other hand, have often had to choose between unaffordable rents and unaffordable home prices.

But the situation is nuanced. Homeowners in some parts of the country face skyrocketing insurance costs. Rents in some cities have moderated. Builders are finding ways to make new homes affordable for first-time buyers.

No one indicator tells the full story. Rather, economists and industry experts say understanding the housing market requires looking at an array of data shedding light on different pieces of the puzzle.

Lumber prices have plunged 24% as this year's home builder season fails to meet expectations

  • Lumber prices are down 24% from their mid-March peak amid subdued home-building activity.

Lumber prices have plunged this year as the peak home-building season falls flat amid subdued demand.

The essential homebuilding commodity has seen futures pricing plunge 24% from its mid-March peak to $473 per 1,000 board feet.

The sharp decline is an about-face from the start of the year, when lumber brokers were excited about 2024 prospects for the commodity due to a US housing market that is sorely in need of new homes.

"We entered 2024 with optimism for the year to come with a housing deficit that needs to be filled, commodity lumber and structural panel prices reset to a pre-covid range, and a Fed that stopped raising interest rates with hopes of many cuts to come," Sherwood Lumber senior vice president Josh Goodman told Business Insider.

That optimism drove a build-up in lumber inventory at the start of the year, and that inventory is still getting worked through as the home building season appears to not be as strong as it was expected to be, according to Goodman.

US housing starts and new building permits have been steadily falling this year, declining 4% and 6% in May, respectively.

Home builders have been slowing down new construction projects because sales of new homes have also been steadily declining this year as consumers grapple with lingering affordability issues driven by high mortgage rates and stubbornly high home prices.

Putting added pressure on lumber prices is that the commodity is experiencing a period of oversupply.

"What many did not recognize is that new demand has been declining faster than the sawmill production. Commodity Forest Product markets continue to be oversupplied," Sherwood Lumber COO Kyle Little told Business Insider.

And falling demand combined with rising supply can be a powerful dynamic that puts downward pressure on prices.

"Last week's housing report provided confirmation for many that demand is somewhat worse that most realized. Current supply needs to be consumed and the market is indicating that it will….albeit at a lower price," Little said.
