The PhD program in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology at WVU is recognized as one of the premier training programs in the world.

It provides students with a comprehensive curriculum delivered by highly qualified faculty. The program combines academic rigor, extensive research experiences and applied consulting opportunities to train highly competent, well-rounded future sport, exercise and performance psychology professionals.

Students initiate their own line of research, work with faculty to produce publishable manuscripts, and complete three research benchmarks in addition to their dissertation. Furthermore, students take part in supervised applied experiences working within a range of different sport, exercise and performance settings, including Division I, II and III athletic programs.

This PhD program, which includes a concurrent master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling , allows individuals to sit for counseling licensure upon graduation. With this combination of research and applied aspects of sport, exercise and performance psychology, the program prepares students for careers as sport psychology consultants, researchers and future faculty members. Students may also apply for a science track with more emphasis on research, which does not include the master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Many students work 20 hours a week during the semester as a graduate assistant, either teaching, providing service or conducting research. In return for these contributions, graduate assistants receive a tuition waiver and stipend.

This program is delivered in-person and requires full-time residency in Morgantown for the majority of the 3-4 year program.

Your Degree Plan

The PhD program in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology combines academic rigor, extensive research experiences and applied consulting opportunities to train highly competent, well-rounded sport, exercise and performance psychology professionals.

The program combines academic rigor, extensive research experiences and applied consulting opportunities to train highly competent, well-rounded future sport, exercise and performance psychology professionals. The comprehensive curriculum represents the science-practice model of psychology.

Foundational Courses Students complete 65-75 credit hours that cover traditional SEP coursework, professional practice courses and research methods. They will have individual plan of studies meetings to finalize their doctoral curriculum with all courses needed to complete the requirements for the SEP doctoral degree.

Dissertation Throughout the program students select a line of research that coincides with their area of interest. The SEP doctoral degree program culminates with a dissertation research project, exploring an important topic in the field of sport, exercise and performance psychology. The dissertation will be in the form of two or three publishable papers researching the chosen topic, which will be presented in a public forum. The dissertation committee must approve of the dissertation to be fully accepted.

Earn a Dual Degree in Counseling Once admitted into this program, students can opt to dual enroll in the master's degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling . Courses for these two programs are completed simultaneously. Upon completion students are eligible to sit for licensure as a licensed professional counselor in most states.

Applied Experiences Students have the opportunity to gain applied experience working with a range of performers, including student-athletes of Division I, II and III athletic programs. As a result, most students accrue more than 400 hours of supervised service provision allowing them to meet the requirements for AASP certification (CMPC). In addition, the dual enrollment in a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling allows individuals to sit for counseling licensure upon graduation.

Research The program boasts seven faculty members trained in sport, exercise and performance psychology. These faculty members have different training backgrounds and research specialties (see faculty profiles) allowing them to supervise students with various research interests. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with those faculty members and are expected to produce publishable manuscripts. In their research, students are encouraged to identify topics that align with their own interests and will help them reach their professional goals.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission into a graduate program at WVU an applicant must submit official, bachelor's degree transcripts from a regionally accredited institution and hold a GPA of at least 2.75. WVU operates decentralized admissions. Decentralized admissions allows each graduate program to set its own application requirements in addition to the University requirements.

To be eligible for admission into the Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology graduate program an applicant must submit the following documentation:

Application Requirements

Applicants can seek admission to the doctoral program in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology with either a baccalaureate degree or master's degree. To be considered for admission, applicants must upload the following documentation within the graduate application :

• Résumé or CV
• Transcripts from all previous institutions
• Official GRE scores
• Personal statement (1-2 written pages on professional background, goals and reasons for pursuing doctoral degree at WVU, and rationale for potential faculty advisor)
• Two (2) Letters of recommendation

Once the application is submitted and (unofficial/official) transcripts are received, your application will be reviewed for an admission decision. EdD in Sport and Performance Psychology with Clinical Mental Health Counseling Specialization

Who is the CMHC specialization for?

The doctorate of education in sport and performance psychology, clinical mental health counseling specialization (EdD-SPP, CMHC) is uniquely designed for students who are simultaneously seeking counseling licensure and advanced sport and performance psychology training to open the door to a wide array of career options.

What does the program cover?

Using a comprehensive and integrated approach, through the lens of sport and performance, the EdD-SPP, CMHC degree develops professional competencies in two distinct areas:

The clinical mental health counseling curriculum covers eight core counseling content areas: (1) ethics and professional identity; (2) multiculturalism and advocacy; (3) human growth and development; (4) career counseling; (5) helping relationships; (6) group counseling; (7) testing and assessment; and (8) research and program evaluation. It also includes five terms of clinical counseling field placement (one practicum and four internship courses). Additional required courses provide content required by state licensing boards.

In the sport and performance psychology curriculum, students complete the core sport and performance psychology (SPP) EdD curriculum and may elect to participate in the sport and performance psychology consulting concentration (see section below) to prepare them to apply for the Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) credential. During the final year of the degree, students will complete an individual research project (i.e., dissertation).

Applicants who have already earned a clinical counseling degree are not eligible for this integrated program and should apply to the EdD-SPP program instead.

Program graduates work as counselors, consultants, administrators, educators, performance coaches, researchers, clinical coordinators and clinical supervisors.

This program prepares students to sit for the National Counselor Exam (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCHMCE). Passing the NCE/NCHMCE exams are required for licensure in one’s state. It is the responsibility of the individual student to understand and comply with all state licensure requirements. As state licensing boards do not review programmatic content prior to application for licensure, UWS makes no representations or guarantee that completion of UWS coursework or programs will permit an individual to obtain state licensure. How is the degree completed?

This 148-credit degree can be completed in four years of full-time enrollment or 4.5-5.5 years of part time enrollment and is completed 100% online with consistent and engaging interaction with program faculty who have experience in both fields. This degree is completed with face-to-face internship requirements within students’ communities. Five terms of clinical field placement (one term of practicum and four of internship) allow students real-life application of their skills with live clients. Faculty assist students in finding these field placements, contract with local supervisors and include university-based supervision. Strong student engagement makes the program feel like a cohort model, but students can request flexibility in their program plan to accommodate work and life responsibilities.

For those who have demonstrated success in a previous bachelor’s or master’s program, this degree gives you the opportunity to complete two degrees (master’s-in-passing in clinical mental health counseling and the doctorate of education in sport and performance psychology with clinical mental health counseling specialization) without having to apply to two different programs. Students earn a master’s in clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) upon completion of the CMHC required credits (90) and the EdD in SPP with CMHC specialization at the completion of the entire program.

The master’s in clinical mental health counseling is earned prior to starting the doctoral portion of the degree so that students can begin working as a professional counselor while completing their doctorate.

Standardized Patient Program

One of the features of this program is the standardized patient component, which provides unique and personalized learning for students. Faculty design specific case studies, which create opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in simulated real-world scenarios with specially trained actors. Students also have the opportunity to design their own case studies to demonstrate conceptualization skills and process understanding.

Sport and Performance Psychology Consulting (SPPC) Concentration

The SPPC concentration within the EdD-SPP, CMHC specialization requires four quarters of continuous mentorship enrollment (16 credits). The SPPC concentration curriculum has been designed specifically to allow students to complete mentorship hours in partial fulfillment of the requirements to obtain the Certified Mental Performance Consultant® (CMPC) credential through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). Students are advised to remain informed of current CMPC standards and work directly with program faculty to assure compliance with both graduation and CMPC requirements. Students in this concentration are required to attend virtual weekly meetings with their UWS faculty mentor, as well as 3-5 virtual meetings at a designated time for group mentorship during each term of enrollment. Each week students will complete readings and assignments which will be reviewed with classmates during virtual classroom and live video conference group and individual mentorship sessions. Additionally, students will share consulting experiences and discuss case formulations with the small group.

Note: All components of the SPP Mentorship program, including client consultations, individual mentorship meetings, group mentorship meetings, and recorded client sessions must be conducted entirely in English, regardless of students’ and clients’ geographic location or preferred language. A student with a disability that limits their ability to complete the program requirements in English may request a reasonable accommodation via the Office of Student Success . A student with an approved accommodation must contact the Mentorship Coordinator prior to beginning the SPPC concentration to discuss how the accommodation will be implemented within the Mentorship program.

Graduation Requirements

The EdD in sport and performance psychology is conferred upon the student who has fulfilled the following requirements:

• Maintenance of enrollment eligibility through satisfactory academic performance, professional development and behavior.
• Successful completion of all required courses and program requirements or approved equivalents in a student’s EdD program path with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on all required coursework.
• Successful completion of minimum graduation requirements as officially communicated to students through the university catalog, student publications, and other official documents of the university.
• Freedom from all indebtedness and other obligations to the university.

Master of Science Learning Outcomes: During the first 90 credits, your courses will focus on the following program learning outcomes.

Students begin working on their dissertation in the very first course of this 60-credit-hour program. The program is available online, which allows students to continue working while pursuing a degree. These online courses frequently begin, allowing students to begin their education without delay. Working professionals who prefer to learn in-person can also take GCU’s evening programs, which are held one night per week.GCU was chartered in 1949 and is a private Christian university with campuses in Phoenix and Northwest Phoenix. Students who enroll in the Doctor of Psychology in Human and Organizational Psychology program through Touro University Worldwide can complete the program entirely online with no residency requirements. Students can focus on three areas: Organizational Psychology, Leadership Psychology, or Industrial Psychology. They can also complete a dissertation in an area of their choosing. Program applicants must have a master’s degree and a cumulative master’s GPA of 3.4 or higher. No GRE scores are required for admission to this program, but students must submit a biography, career plan, and statement of their goals in pursuing this degree. The Touro education system incorporates Jewish-sponsored, non-profit educational institutions. Touro University Worldwide’s parent institution is the Touro College and University System. Touro offers students a network of both on-ground and online campuses that create a global-minded approach to a liberal arts education. Through TUW, students can access cutting-edge technology, highly-qualified faculty, and excellent administrative services throughout their education. TUW offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. 12. Capella University

Capella University’s online Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology program prepares students to pursue their licensure as clinical psychologists. During this program, students will focus on areas including mental disorders, psychotherapy, and clinical training. The courses are offered both online and in-person, and students attend face-to-face residencies that allow them to connect with their peers and faculty. Additionally, students complete internships, a clinical practicum, and research, all of which prepare them for the challenges they will face in a real-world clinical setting. This degree’s curriculum has been designed around APA guidelines, ensuring it prepares students to pursue licensures in many states. Capella was established in 1993 to provide education programs tailored to the unique needs of adult learners. Today, Capella offers 53 degree programs. 13. Northcentral University

Northcentral University offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology degree program. The 60-credit-hour degree takes approximately 48 months to complete. Students can choose from specializations such as Healthy Psychology, Gender Diversity Studies, and Trauma and Disaster Relief. This online program features courses that start every Monday, allowing students to begin their degree program almost immediately. Classes are just one student in size, so students can gain excellent advice and information from their mentoring professors. Students may also be eligible for one of the six new full-tuition Legacy Scholarships awarded in the fall. Founded in 1996, Northcentral offers degree programs to working professionals all over the world. These degree programs have no physical residency requirements and are built on the power of mentoring. Northcentral offers masters and doctoral degrees in marriage and family therapy, technology, health sciences, business, education, and psychology. All Northcentral faculty have doctoral degrees, and with class sizes of one, students have unique access to faculty. Northcentral’s programs are designed with the scheduling flexibility that working professionals need, allowing them to progress toward their degrees while still maintaining family and work commitments.

14. California Institute of Integral Studies

The California Institute of Integral Studies offers an Integral and Transpersonal Psychology Online Ph.D. Program . This 36-unit program takes approximately three years to complete and is provided online with twice-yearly intensives. The degree program’s whole-person approach to psychology prepares students with the skills and research experience they’ll need for professional positions. Students have access to a peer-reviewed journal partially produced by interns, senior field scholars who help to guide research, and more. In addition to online study, students also attend residential intensives in the San Francisco Bay area, which allows them to engage with both their peers and faculty. Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri founded CIIS in 1968 as a branch of the Cultural Integration Fellowship. Over more than 40 years, CIIS has offered cross-cultural studies with an emphasis on Asian religions and cultures. Today, CIIS offers programs in subjects such as art, religion, cultural anthropology, and health studies. In the fall of 2018, CIIS’ enrollment was nearly 1,500 students, 9% of whom were international students. At CIIS, students can earn bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees and have access to a library housing more than 158,000 books and over 14,000 electronic journals.

15. Alaska Pacific University

At Alaska Pacific University, students can pursue a Doctor of Psychology in Counseling Psychology degree. This program is designed for students who have a master’s degree and who wish to become licensed psychologists in Alaska. During the program, students complete synchronous work through online classes in the evenings.Additionally, students attend on-campus intensives every six weeks that help to prepare them for internship placement. APU also offers a variety of scholarships for psychology students, including the James C. Parsons Memorial Scholarship, the Cook Inlet Region Inc. Scholarship Fund, and the Chenega Corporation Scholarship. APU is located in Anchorage, Alaska, and offered its first classes in 1960. APU offers associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees as well as certificate programs. Program areas include Alaska Native Governance, Nursing, Community Health, and Alaska Rural Management. For students who aren’t yet sure which path they would like to pursue, APU’s Non-Degree Seeking admissions option allows students to take college classes without enrolling in a full degree program.

16. University of Arizona Global Campus

UAGC’s Doctor of Psychology program is an online degree that prepares students to improve the emotional and mental health of others through their professional work. Students progress through this 62-credit-hour program in courses between six-to-nine weeks in length. During the program, students can choose from six specializations, including Educational Leadership, Industrial Organizational Psychology, and Sport and Performance Psychology. In addition to core and specialization courses, students also complete a capstone seminar and an Applied Doctoral Project. UAGC works to provide students with accessible, affordable, innovative, high-quality degree programs. Currently, the university offers more than 80 online degree programs that students can access anywhere, with no on-campus residency requirements. Courses are delivered in five- or six-week terms, rather than following a semester format, allowing students to progress through their coursework quickly. 17. Fielding Graduate University

At Fielding Graduate University, students can earn a Clinical Psychology Ph.D. degree delivered uniquely. Students attend National Sessions, which are week-long events that take place throughout the country. During these sessions, students attend workshops and seminars, hear from guest speakers and forums, and attend student-led learning events and dissertation committee meetings, alumni presentations, guest presentations, and more. Often, graduation ceremonies also occur at these sessions. This program is only available to students who live in the United States or Canada. The university was founded in 1974 by three higher-education administrators and educators who realized that changing demographics was also changing the higher-education field. As a result, Fielding’s degree programs are designed for adult students who are already mid-career and who learn differently than youth. Fielding’s faculty have extensive real-world experience and scholarship that allows them to create quality-learning experiences and cross-program collaboration opportunities for students.

18. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology’s Ph.D. in International Psychology with a concentration in Trauma Services program is delivered online, making it suitable for students balancing a full-time job with their education. Students progress through the program in online cohorts, which helps to create a supportive network. In addition to online coursework, students participate in two nine-day international Field Experiences during years two and three of the program. Program graduates will have the skills needed to create programs addressing mental health issues resulting from trauma. Graduates will be prepared to work in a variety of settings, including nonprofit, education, government, international help organizations, and more. Founded in 1979, TCSPP offers over 20 degree programs today as well as many international experiences for its 4,300 students. TCSPP has campuses in Chicago, New Orleans, Dallas, Southern California, and Washington, D.C., and also offers courses online. TCSPP has 20 global academic partners and is, therefore, able to offer its students many valuable international and study abroad opportunities, helping them to develop a global perspective within their education. 19. Saybrook University

Saybrook University’s online Ph.D. in Psychology degree program prepares students for professional careers in education, community health centers, prisons, non-profits, and other settings. The Master of Arts in Sport & Performance Psychology (MASPP) at the Graduate School of Professional Psychology is a pioneer in innovative training, applied research and practice. The program is designed to develop individuals in the sport, performing arts, health and fitness, and mental health fields who want to improve the performance and lives of the people they work with. Our program focuses on the psychological factors that influence human performance while practicing assessment and intervention strategies that enhance an individual’s performance and personal growth.

Students in the program will learn:

Program Structure

The two-year course of study is designed to provide training in principles of performance, quality practice and learning, coaching/leadership, team development and consulting in a variety of contexts. 

Students are required to complete 72 credits of coursework.

A supervised practicum as well as a master’s project is required.

Master's Project

The Master's Project requirement is designed to serve as a capstone achievement demonstrating students' comprehensive knowledge of SPP theories, concepts, applications and professional and ethical guidelines. Consistent with our practitioner-scholar model and goal of training competent SPP consultants, the Master's Project highlights reflective practice. In conjunction with the field placements students are completing through CPEX and receiving supervision for through Practicum, students will engage in weekly reflective journal writing. The final Master's Project will be submitted as a Portfolio, compiling the students’ reflections from their time in the program.

Featured Courses

Theoretical aspects of sport and performance psychology, about this course.

This course is an in-depth exploration of selected aspects of the theories of sport psychology along with applications of these theories to other performance domains. An advanced understanding of the field of sport and performance psychology is pursued in relation to psychosocial aspects involved in both the preparation and performance processes among adults, youth, and children who represent all skill levels. The explored areas include: (a) motivation, confidence, and anxiety in sport and performance, (b) selected topics in social psychology and psychobiology, (c) psychological skills training, and (d) special topics (e.g., personality, flow, injuries, burnout).

Theories of Performance Excellence

This course is designed to familiarize students with theories of performance excellence developed by leading practitioners. Each week, students are exposed to a different practitioner's approach, which often includes an opportunity to observe the practitioner's style through video. Emphasis is placed on the role of theory in practice, theory-based conceptualizations utilizing a case study format, and comparing and contrasting the different theories.

Sport and Performance Psychology Interventions

This course is designed to familiarize students with the application of sport and performance psychology interventions. Students experience the building of a sport and performance psychology program. This program includes the cardinal skills of relaxation, concentration, imagery, self-talk, and mental routine; followed by broader topics such as goal setting, motivation, confidence, cohesion, engagement, and mastery. The instructor briefly reviews relevant theory and research followed by demonstrations of techniques and strategies, after which students learn by doing. Specific attention is given to blending the science of peak performance with the art of applying science.

Hands-On Experience

Throughout their time in the MASPP program, our students provide a variety of services to the community. This service has included over 80 consulting placements and over 140 coaching placements with children, youth, and adults in various sport and performance domains.

The Center for Performance Excellence (CPEX) is a MASPP student-led, faculty-supervised consultation service. Students and faculty are committed to the service and development of underserved, vulnerable and minority populations. The goal is to ensure that these communities have access to adequate social, educational, ad vocational resources, as well as positive youth development through participation in performance-based activities. Consultation topics include motivation, team building, goal setting, energy management, confidence, conflict resolution, return from injury, stress management and improving team effectiveness.

How to apply

What are the phd in psychology admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

• Admission application – no application fee required
• A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
•  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• A valid, government-issued form of photo identification

GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.

International student requirements

If you completed your most recent academic coursework, degree, or credential at an institution outside the United States, regardless of your citizenship or where you currently live, you are considered an international applicant.

Explore jobs and outcomes for an online bachelor’s in psychology

Earning a psychology degree means becoming a psychologist, right?

Not necessarily.

You may be surprised to learn that 50% of psychology bachelor’s degree-earners don’t wind up working in health care at all. The skills gained in a psychology degree program are widely valued by employers and applicable to a variety of settings.

According to Oregon State University senior instructor Kristen Yax, psychology is “the Swiss Army Knife of degrees” — one that can lead graduates in countless rewarding directions.

“First and foremost, it’s a direct path to many career opportunities in the field – from clinical or social to research or education,” says Yax. “But psychology is also relevant if not critical in almost every profession imaginable, and a psych degree opens many doors in many industries that more specialized degrees of study often do not.”

And as someone interested in studying psychology, you likely want to learn what drives people, whether that’s in the workplace, social structures, or through their purchasing habits or technology usage.

So, with a core focus on human behavior, what can you do when you earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology online from Oregon State University? Let’s explore.

Social services

Perhaps most related to health care work is the field of social services. While social services could include mental health therapist and psychologist roles (with a master’s or Ph.D. under your belt), helping people in your community can reach far beyond those two roles.

With skills like counseling techniques, problem-solving, communication aptitude and strong empathy responses, psychology graduates are primed for helping roles.

“Social services work revolves around a shared set of values and combines insights from cognitive science, advocacy, psychotherapy, and public policy,” according to The Best Schools social services career guide .

Jobs in the field of social services for psychology bachelor’s graduates include social and human service assistant , probation officer or correctional treatment specialist , community health worker and social and community service manager .

Human resources

One adjacent outcome for a psychology bachelor’s graduate is working in the field of human resources. This career path requires interpersonal skills, data analysis and ethics and diversity knowledge — all competencies that you can gain through your coursework as a psychology student.

According to Learn.org , “Individuals with a psychology degree have diverse career opportunities in human resources.”

This category of work includes a variety of entry-level and advanced positions, including  HR generalist ,  recruitment coordinator , compensation and benefits manager , human resources manager and even career coaching.

Oregon State grad Tracey Campion said this of her experience gaining the skills needed to become a career coach: “A bachelor’s degree in psychology could not be a more fitting education for a coach, and I am so appreciative that the OSU Ecampus [psychology] program was available for me to return to school online as an older, working student from outside the country.”

Marketing and communications

Another field psychology graduates are qualified to enter is marketing and communications. At first glance, psychology and marketing may seem unrelated. But with core knowledge in areas like behavioral motivation, research skills and statistical analysis, the parallels shift into focus.

“Psychology majors are well-suited for careers in marketing. The courses you take in your undergraduate studies, such as social psychology, human behavior, research design and statistics, directly apply to many roles within the umbrella of marketing,” according to a report published by Psychology.org .

Career opportunities in marketing for psychology bachelor’s graduates include advertising, promotions or marketing management , public relations and fundraising , or market research analysis .

Psychology and technology ? Minus the final five letters, you may wonder what these two fields may have in common. The short answer is people. The more precise answer is knowledge in topics like cognitive processes, evaluation development and the building and coding of qualitative assessments.

“UX designers make products and services more intuitive, enjoyable, and streamlined for users — often in a digital environment, like a business’s website or app,” according to Psychology.org . “An understanding of psychology fits well with this profession. Concepts like memory limitation, cognitive load, and the psychology of colors all make for a better designer.”

In the field of technology, psychology bachelor’s graduates can look for job opportunities as a UX designer , a cognitive scientist , or an AI ethics specialist .

If you decide to go on to graduate school, you can put a master’s in human-computer interaction to work in the field of research.

What about graduate school?

Graduate school is a common next step for students who earn a psychology bachelor’s degree. Because the knowledge gained in an undergraduate psychology program is so broad, students often choose to pursue a more specific master’s or Ph.D. after graduation.

How did Raygun qualify for the Olympics? Is she really the best Australia has to offer?

Since Australian breaker Rachael "Raygun" Gunn failed to score a single point in any of her Olympic bouts, many have asked how she qualified for the Games.

Fellow breaker and anthropologist Lucas Marie says she won her qualification "fair and square" last year, but African American man Malik Dixon has criticised the Olympic body for letting her in.

What's next?

Breaking will not be an event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games — a decision made before Raygun's performance.

The 2024 Paris Olympics marked breaking's debut as a sport at the global event, with 36-year-old lecturer and breaker Rachael "Raygun" Gunn representing Australia for the first time.

Having failed to win a single point in any of her Olympic bouts, Raygun quickly became a viral sensation.

The question on many people's minds now is: How did she even qualify?

Lucas Marie is a breaker who has competed, performed, taught and judged breaking competitions over the past 25 years. He's also an anthropologist who recently co-authored an article with Gunn.

He says the answer to that question is simple.

"There was an Oceania qualifier in which any B-boy or B-girl from Australia [or] New Zealand could enter, and that was in Sydney in October 2023," he told ABC News.

"And leading up to that, there were a lot of other events in which breakers were competing.

"She won those battles fair and square and won the qualification in Sydney.

"And it wasn't really a surprise to anyone. 

"She's been fairly consistent, winning or coming second or third at a lot of breaking events in Australia for the last five to 10 years."

Marie said there was nothing out of the ordinary about Raygun's performance.

"It's not like gymnastics where there's this kind of agreed-upon standard," he said.

"It's always had a rawness to it. It's always had an improvisational kind of quality. And I think looking different and trying different stuff has always been celebrated.

"And I think Raygun, in a way, was just expressing a core kind of hip hop trait in a way a lot of breakers do."

He described her efforts as bold.

"I thought — and this is how I judge a lot of breaking events — I thought, 'Oh, she's making some really interesting choices to mimic Australian animals.' And you can kind of see the choices that she's making in the moment."

Is she the best Australia has to offer?

"It's sometimes just who's performing better on the day," Marie said.

"And at the qualification event in which she won, and other events in which she's won, she performed better on that day and won the ticket.

"That doesn't mean she's the best. It doesn't really work like that.

"I think she's a great breaker. She won the qualification. She's won other events in the past, and she was a good representative for Australia at that competition."

Asked whether there were B-girls in Perth, regional Victoria or rural Brisbane who might have qualified but could not afford to travel to Sydney for the tryouts, Marie agreed this was possible.

"Of course, there's breakers all over the country that maybe should have been in that event, but they weren't."

Breaking will not carry over to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, a decision made before Raygun's battle.

Marie described this as sad.

"Maybe, based on the ratings, they'll reassess that and maybe allocate some medals to breaking," he said.

"I really hope that's the case, and I hope that for other breakers who want to compete in it as a dance sport."

Marie said that at the end of the day people should remember they were dealing with a human.

"As a friend of Rachael's, there's a human being who's getting a lot of negative attention," he said.

"I think people kind of miss that sometimes and forget the human aspect of all this."

'Toying with the culture'

Malik Dixon is an African American who has been living in Australia for more than a decade and is a Sydney University graduate.

He said Raygun made a total "mockery" out of breaking at the Olympics.

"She was dressed like a member of the cricket team or an Australian PE teacher, and from that point it just seemed like satire," Mr Dixon told ABC News.

"It just looked like somebody who was toying with the culture and didn't know how culturally significant it was being the first time in the Olympics and just how important it was to people who really cherish hip hop and one of the elements of hip hop, which is breakdancing.

"It made me think, was Borat her breakdancing coach?"

Mr Dixon said too many people felt entitled to African American culture.

"The African American space has been one where we've shared our community so much and without any restraints, any barriers, roadblocks, obstacles, any gatekeepers, that essentially what should have been African American cultural capital is just shared, which is cool," he said. 

"We like to share, right? 

"We shared 400 years of free labour.

"To see Rachael in her attempt to be a part of the culture just be grossly underwhelming made it seem like she didn't take it seriously."

Olympics body criticised for Raygun qualification

Mr Dixon criticised the body that qualified Raygun, saying she devalued breaking with her performance.

"Whatever governing body nominated her as Australia's entrant into the Olympics either did not understand the assignment or didn't really believe in the integrity or significance of breakdancing, because if they did they would just say, rather than disrespect the culture, we're just not ready to send an applicant this year."

He said Raygun was extremely audacious and not self-aware.

"You've got to know your role, know your position, know your limitation," he said. 

"And I think that part of privilege is saying that there are no limits to what I can do. 

"Part of privilege is having the authority to say that there are no limits and there are no requirements, there are no prerequisites to what I can do."

Raygun's degrees do not hold much water with Mr Dixon.

"Due to consumerism, this Foundational Black American product, which is hip hop, is global," he said.

"And even people who have no connection to any African Americans or any local or regional things that come out in these songs, they have become a part of the whole experience now.

"If I came in and said that I was an authority on Greek music and I was going against the grain of what the mainstream Greek musicians thought, or the school of thought, and I've said that I was the authority, people would check me on that.

"If I had a PhD in sprinting, does that qualify me to go against Noah Lyles? No, it doesn't."

He also doubts Raygun was the best breaker Australia had to offer.

"[There's] got to be somebody out here that's better than that! The kangaroo! The sprinkler! She did the sprinkler out there, man!" he said.

Should everybody just lighten up?

Should we lighten up? Mr Dixon does not believe so.

"Larrikinism is used as a get-out-of-jail-free card and to escape responsibility of how words or actions impact a hurt person," he said.

"But when the majority culture is offended, there's no playing around.

"This is a part of my culture, and I don't think Australians are in a place to tell me how I should feel about breakdancing being mocked on an international stage.

"People who don't have any or limited access to black people or hip hop culture now may see Rachael and her buffoonery as a representation of hip hop and black culture.

"People who were already side-eyeing breakdancing as an Olympic sport, Rachael Gunn has put the nail in that coffin.

"This might be the most viral clip of the whole Olympics. From a comedy standpoint, she's got it, but from an Olympics perspective, its regressive."
