Degree Type: Masters

Degree Program Code: MSW_SOWK_OCO

Degree Program Summary:

The primary mission of social work is to enhance human well-being and to help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. Professional social workers are employed in schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, elected office, private practice, prisons, corporations, and in many public and private agencies that serve individuals and families in need.

Students leave our program as competent and creative social workers ready for advanced practice. The MSW program at Georgia is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and our school is ranked in the top 25 percent of social work graduate programs nationwide.

We invite motivated and dedicated students who want to work for positive social change to apply to our program. If you are accepted into the MSW program at UGA, you’ll choose from two concentration areas:

Family Centered Social Work Practice—your courses will have a clinical focus and will prepare you to work directly with clients.

Community Empowerment and Program Development—your courses will have a broad focus and prepare you to work with community programs and in community advocacy and administrative positions.

The MSW program also offers courses that lead to certificates in:

  • Marriage and Family Therapy

A new study by Zumper might help. It analyzed the country’s 100 most populous cities to find the best ones for new graduates based on several metrics (where adequate data was available). They include median one-bedroom rents and restaurants per capita, as well as U.S. Census Bureau data on the population of 18-to-34 year olds, the number of 25-year-olds with bachelor’s degrees, the number of single people, the median income of younger residents, and local unemployment rates.

Topping the list was Minneapolis, which had a reasonable median one-bedroom rent ($1,150 a month) and ranked 15th for its unemployment rate (5.2 percent). Oklahoma City’s median rent ($849) was the lowest among the top 15 cities, helping it rank 10th overall. San Francisco ranked fifth thanks to its high median income ($87,946) for people 25 and younger — which helps with its huge median rent ($2,895).

Laredo, Texas, fell to the bottom of the list with its small share of 25-year-olds with bachelor’s degrees. It also ranked low in median income and the number of restaurants per capita. Its higher scores for median rent ($850) and unemployment rate (5.5 percent) weren’t enough to make up for its downsides. Augusta, Ga., which ranked 91st for median income ($22,861) came in 99th overall. Providence, R.I., finished just one spot higher, ranking 31st for unemployment rate (7.1 percent), and much lower than that for its paltry population of young residents.

If you’re thinking about New York City, which finished 20th overall, it had the highest median rent of any metro in the study. But it also had the largest population of residents between the ages of 18 and 34 (more than 2 million), and scored well for median income.

Where to Take Your Degree

A study by Zumper ranked 100 U.S. cities on their suitability for recent college graduates based on economic, social and employment opportunities.

Ogden, Robert

OGDEN, Robert "Bob" Mr. Robert C. "Bob" Ogden, husband of Evelyn "Lynne" Fooshe Ogden, died Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at his home in Macon, Georgia. Born September 26, 1939, in Lakeland, Florida, he was the son of the late Bernice and Rebecca Cheshire Ogden. Mr. Ogden was a graduate of Lakeland High School, where he played the saxophone in the high school band. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy, where he was stationed in Antarctica and later served aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft carrier. Mr. Ogden then went on to attend Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, prior to his marriage to the love of his life, Lynne Ogden, one week after college graduation. He also earned a Master of Social Work at the University of Georgia before beginning his career in psychiatric social work working in Gainesville, Georgia, where he and Lynne welcomed their daughter, Alison Ogden-Bowles, into this world. Mr. Ogden then went on to continue his career working in Atlanta, Georgia; Shelby, NC; Augusta, Georgia, and finally Macon, Georgia. Mr. Ogden was a loving, kind man who dedicated his life to the service of others. Though work was important to him, he always found time for family as well as hobbies such as being a lifetime hunter and fisherman, reading and studying World War II history. He also had a passion for flying having taken flying lessons. A lifetime devout Christian, he was a member of Mulberry Street UMC in Macon, though he was raised as a Baptist in Lakeland. At his church, he thoroughly enjoyed singing in the church choir and serving on numerous church committees until his health began to decline due to relapsing MS. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Evelyn "Lynne" Fooshe Ogden, of the home; his cherished daughter, Alison Ogden-Bowles and her husband, Mike of Jonesboro, Georgia; and several of his first cousins from his mother's side of the family (Cheshire Family). Memorial Services were conducted graveside, beginning at 10 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2024, in the Ebenezer Cemetery located on Ebenezer Road in Yemassee, South Carolina 29945, with Military Honors. The family would like to extend a great thanks to Stephanie Greene and Shelia Goodwin for their skillful and encouraging help caring for Mr. Ogden the last several years. Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton is assisting the Ogden family during this time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the application deadline for the msw program.

The deadline to submit completed Graduate School applications to all MSW Program options is January 10, 2025 . Only complete applications will be reviewed. Applications submitted after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis. Applications received after July 1st will not be considered for admission. *Please let us know if your file remains incomplete due to transcript transfer problems that are out of your control. Do I need an undergraduate degree in social work?

No. We have a specially designed program for students who have an undergraduate degree in social work (BSW) called the Advanced Standing Program. For all others, they are welcome to apply to our other programs. However, we do require that applicants have a liberal arts background. We will consider applicants with backgrounds outside of liberal arts if they include liberal arts course work. The undergraduate curriculum should include the following:

  • Biological sciences
  • Social sciences

If you do have a BSW, please review the requirements for the Advanced Standing Program. You may be eligible.

Do I have to take the GRE?

No, GRE test scores are not required unless applicant deems they are instrumental in demonstrating academic promise.

What are other admission requirements for the MSW program?

  • An overall undergraduate GPA of no less than 3.0. (3.2 for Advanced Standing).
  • Three written letters of recommendation.
  • A narrative statement (average length 3-5 pages) explaining your reasons for seeking admission to the MSW program (see instructions on the application form).
  • Work experience or volunteer work in the human services is encouraged, as well as diverse cultural experiences.

All of these factors go into helping the admissions committee make a decision about each candidate. All are important. The application form itself explains the documentation of these additional requirements.

What is the typical undergraduate GPA of applicants?

Recently the overall average GPA for students admitted into the program is approximately 3.2. We do accept students with lower GPAs and welcome the applications of all qualified persons with a demonstrated interest in social work. The minimum undergraduate GPA for admission into the MSW Program is 3.0

The minimum GPA for Advanced Standing students is 3.2.

What is the purpose for the narrative statement and what is the committee looking for?

We are looking for individuals who exhibit strong potential for developing professional competence, whose personal value system promotes social work core values such as social justice and an appreciation for human diversity and who have demonstrated academic promise to be able to perform successfully at the graduate level. The narrative statement is your opportunity to provide the admissions committee members with a clearer sense of who you are and what has motivated you to pursue a career in social work.

Can I receive credit for life experience or previous work experience?

We do not grant social work course credit for these experiences.

When can I begin the MSW program?

Students with a bachelor’s degree in a field different from social work can only begin the MSW program in the Fall semester (beginning in August).

Students with a BSW earned from a CSWE-accredited program (within five years of admission) seeking admission into the Advanced Standing Full-Time program can only enroll in the Summer semester (beginning in June).

Do you have an off-campus or part-time MSW program?

Yes, the Extended-Time MSW Program (formerly the Part-Time MSW Program) at the UGA Gwinnett Campus in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and the Online MSW Program are geared especially for non-traditional students who for various reasons cannot attend class on a full-time basis.

Can I apply to two programs at the same time?

No. You must indicate which of the three programs (full, extended-time or online) you are applying for on the MSW application. You may only apply for admission to one program.

If I have a BSW degree, do I qualify for advanced standing in the MSW program?

In order for the BSW to qualify an applicant for admission into the advanced standing program, the following conditions must be met:

  • It must be from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education,
  • It must have been earned within five years of beginning the MSW program.
  • The required social work GPA for the Advanced Standing program is 3.2.

If your average social work classes do not meet this minimum, or if your BSW was obtained over five years ago you may still be accepted, but only to the Full-Time progam and not to the Advanced Standing program. Earning a BSW degree within the five year limit does not prevent you from admission to the regular program of study. However, you must specifically request this option. Exceptions to the five year rule are BSWs who have worked in a social work setting, which includes MSW staff and professional learning experiences. The limit for those applicants is ten years.

Information about funding opportunities can be found on the MSW Tuition & Funding webpage .

How many hours/classes per week?

  • Full-time Athens: About 15 hours per week, in the classroom/4 or 5 classes per week over 2-3 days. Classes typically begin around 9:15 am and end around 4:30 pm.

  • Online: 100 % asynchronous, but professors may offer optional office hours or other opportunities to enhance the learning experience.

*Practicum internship hours are required for all programs (see below).

How many hours of field practicum are required?

Practicum/Field Education is a signature pedagogy within the MSW program and is required for all CSWE-accredited MSW programs. The UGA MSW program of study includes two academic years of practicum placement:

Generalist Practicum Placement – 312 hours of practicum service; 8 hours per week during fall semester, along with the Field Practicum course, and 16 hours a week during spring semester. The generalist placement is to give you an overview of basic skills and how human service programs are developed, implemented and evaluated. Both semesters of the generalist placement will be completed at the same agency.

Specialist Practicum Placement – 600 practicum hours (300 per semester); 20 hours per week for both fall and spring semesters. Specialization practicum is compatible with the student’s concentration/area of interest. Both semesters of the specialization practicum will be completed at the same agency.

The Practicum Office will work to place you at an approved agency within the state of Georgia.

For additional information about MSW Practicum/Field Education, visit: https://ssw.uga.edu/academics/field-education/msw-field-education/

or email: [email protected]

Do you accept USG TAP students to the Online Program?

The School of Social Work is not currently accepting University System of Georgia TAP applicants for the Master of Social Work Online program due to limited space-availability. We review USG TAP applicants for the Athens and Gwinnett programs on a space-available basis.

When will I find out if I’ve been accepted?

Those who apply to the UGA MSW program prior to the Jan. 10 priority deadline should hear an admissions decision by the end of March.

Once admitted to a program, can I later transfer to another program/campus?

No, transfers between programs/campuses are not allowed. Due to the use of the cohort model, transfers to other programs make completion difficult and costly for the student. In addition, there are limited seats in each cohort. Exceptions to this rule are sometimes made when seats are open in the other program prior to confirming admittance into the program.

Do you accept transfer credits from other programs?

Students who wish to transfer from other CSWE-accredited MSW programs should apply through the regular application process. Applicants who wish to request an evaluation of transfer credits should provide their request in writing, their transcripts, and course syllabi to the SSW Admissions and Recruitment Coordinator. Transcripts and any additional course materials will be individually evaluated by the Director of the MSW Program and/or the Online and Gwinnett Campus Coordinator to assess which course requirements may be satisfied.

The School of Social Work (SSW) may accept the transfer of up to six approved graduate credits. Credits must be from a CSWE-accredited MSW program, cannot already have been used to complete a degree, and must have a final grade of B or higher. Practicum/field education course(s) will not be accepted for transfer credits. Please note that while generalist year curricula are similar across CSWE-accredited programs, there may also be differences which may result in a delay in completing an MSW degree at UGA. Please address letters requesting such transfers to: MSW Admissions, University of Georgia, School of Social Work, 279 Williams Street, Athens, GA 30602 or email [email protected]
