IMPORTANT: The original release of WordPerfect 11 (i.e., version 11.0.0.233 as shown in Help>About...) introduced a bug that causes some macros created/edited/played in it (no matter who created them) to fail to terminate properly when played in WP11.0.0.300, and vice versa . These macros appear to play but do not return to the main document screen and appear to "hang," or else they go into an endless loop. This problem also affects Corel shipping macros and template macros inside various Corel Projects. For solutions, see here .

  • Auto-suggest filename - When you save a document for the first time or as a new file, WordPerfect automatically inserts a suggested filename.

  • With every new version of WordPerfect, certain items are enhanced, others are renamed, and still others are found in a new location. The following table shows the items that have changed in WordPerfect 10.

  • Application bar - You can now display the current language in the application bar (for example, English-U.S. (US)). You can change the language by accessing the application bar.
  • Comments - The enhanced comment bubble is less intrusive, fitting the length of the text only, and leaving no empty space in the bubble.You can also apply formatting to text, as well as insert a graphic, a table, and so on, within the comment bubble.
  • Corel RealTime Preview - This feature has been extended to include QuickFonts, underline, drop caps, and other formatting features.
  • Merge - The Merge feature now allows more fields for each record and an improved keyboard merge dialog.
  • Navigation - The Go to feature now includes bookmarks, hyperlinks, redlined text, equations, graphics, and other items.The Browse by feature has been expanded, and a flyout allows you to select a browse method more quickly.
  • Publish to PDF - Supports hyperlinks and watermarks.
  • Ruler - Elements (for example, left margin adjust) have been redesigned and enlarged.
  • Tables - A Table menu has been added to the menu bar.Cells containing formulas are marked with a colored indicator. You can also copy cell formulas by dragging.The QuickSplit columns and rows button on the property bar lets you split a cell into four cells (columns and rows).The Shadow Cursor now works in table cells.
  • Text selection - You have more flexibility in selecting text with your mouse or keyboard.
IMPORTANT:  A new feature introduced in WordPerfect 10 affects [1] the way text is selected and [2] the way the cursor moves — and it can also produce serious problems with some macros in WordPerfect 10 and later versions . This is the result of a new check box setting in Tools, Settings, Environment: " Use WP9 text selection ". The factory setting is OFF (check box un-ticked) by default — presumably for the convenience of Microsoft Word users so the program acts the same way when selecting text. Most users of earlier versions of WordPerfect will probably want to turn it ON. ( See here for more information.)

Initial release: May 1999. Important: WPO9( sp4 ) was released in September 2000 and only available directly from Corel. This was an almost complete rewrite of the program — i.e., it was not a typical "patch" — so it could not be downloaded and used to update the initial WP9 release (even if that version was already patched to SP3). 

What's new in WP9:

Performance and productivity features

  • Corel RealTime Preview lets you scroll through and preview several different formatting options, such as fonts, lines, tables, borders, and shading, to see what they look like, without applying those changes to your document.
  • Install-As-You-Go helps you minimize the hard disk space required by WordPerfect Office 2000 applications by including only the bare necessities. If a non-installed item is selected, you will be asked if you want to install it.
  • WordPerfect 9 lets you use the Embedded Font feature. If you choose Embedded Fonts when saving your document, your fonts will be compressed and saved with the file data. Now your favorite fonts will go wherever your file goes for the presentation that you expect.
  • Autoscroll lets you scroll through a document without using the arrow keys or the scroll bars. When you point the Autoscroll arrow in the direction you want to move, you can scroll through the document. The scrolling speed increases when you move the arrow further from the Autoscroll tool and slows when you move the arrow closer to the Autoscroll tool.
  • WordPerfect 9 enhances the Make-It-Fit feature available in previous versions to allow you to fit sections of your document into a specified number of pages without affecting other areas where fitting specifications may be different.
  • The enhanced charting module provides additional chart types and capabilities.
  • WordPerfect 9 continues to work towards accessibility requirements, including the support of High-Contrast mode, providing keystrokes to the majority of features, using standard user interface controls which make Third Party accessibility tools compatible with Corel applications, supporting large font mode, and providing options under settings to provide flexibility in functionality.
  • WordPerfect 9 provides over 100 new shapes. You can choose a shape from any of the new shape palettes or use the Basic Shapes, Arrows, Stars, Banners, and Flowcharting tools. Action buttons prompt the assignment of an action; Call out shapes have pointers that can be anchored anywhere in the document. All shapes have the new Text In Shapes feature, which allows text to be added into the shape on the fly.
  • Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) lets you develop VBA applications to control WordPerfect 9 through the OLE Automation Type Library. The main object exposed by WordPerfect 9 is the PerfectScript object, which consists of all the functions currently available in the PerfectScript language, making it easier for those familiar with PerfectScript to modify existing scripts and to understand the syntax and parameters required to program the PerfectScript object's methods. These VBA projects are stored within the application document and are easily distributed.
  • You can skew the top row or the left or right column of a table. Unless you specify otherwise, any text that you type in a skewed cell will be skewed as well. You can also change the angle of the skew and specify other skew options.
  • WordPerfect 9 includes additional options for printing multiple pages. You can specify the number of copies you wish to print and whether you want the copies collated. Collating is useful when printing multipage documents. When you enable the Collate check box, a complete copy of each document is printed before the next document is printed; when collating is disabled, all the copies of the first page are printed before the copies of the second page are printed.
  • Although WordPerfect 9 creates documents in a WYSIWYG environment, many users have requested a Print Preview option. WordPerfect 9 lets you view your document as a single page or double pages. Print Preview is fully compatible with Corel RealTime Preview, which lets you experiment with formatting options, such as fonts, lines, tables, borders, and shading, without applying them to your document. Print Preview is also fully editable; therefore, you do not have to switch back to regular view to make changes to your document.
  • The browse buttons make navigation within a document more intuitive. WordPerfect 9 lets you navigate through a document in the same way that you navigate through an Internet document.

Compatibility and integration features

  • WordPerfect 9 continues to use the same file format as its predecessorsCorel WordPerfect 6, 6.1, 7, and 8without requiring any conversion from these previous versions. Keeping the same file format lets you convert Microsoft Word and Lotus AmiPro documents while retaining all document data from open to save.
  • In-Place Editing lets you edit an object without switching to a different window. Buttons and list boxes temporarily change to work specifically with that object.
  • WordPerfect 9 now uses the new In-Place Activation feature to help further integrate 3rd Party applications into WordPerfect Office 2000. By double-clicking on an OLE object, the editing or development environment native to that object is initiated inside WordPerfect, providing seamless integration of 3rd Party applications.
  • XML (eXtensible Markup Language) provides a platform and application-independent environment for defining document architecture and document markup. WordPerfect 9 lets you create, validate, and save XML documents in a familiar WYSIWYG environment. A structured tree view, shown in a separate window, provides an easy-to-read layout of the full document. WordPerfect 9 automatically inserts and maintains tag pairs to create XML files. WordPerfect 9 provides an editing environment that includes wizards, automatic element insertion, and automatic generation of documents, which makes document creation quick and easy. You can customize menus, toolbars, and keyboard mapping to create your own working environment. WordPerfect 9 incorporates the Document Type Definition (DTD), layout information, and mapping files into a single WordPerfect template.

  • SpeedLinks lets you create Internet linkshighlighted text in a World Wide Web document that helps you jump to another part of the same document or to another document on the World Wide Web. When you type text that begins with "www," "ftp," "http," or "mailto," SpeedLinks automatically converts the text to an Internet link.
  • Trellix 2 Integration lets you create and organize professional, effective documents that can be published to HTML. Trellix can make long, complicated documents easy to understand and navigate; the integrated navigation map lets you visualize and access any part of your document quickly. Trellix documents resemble web pages, with easy-to-create links, and you can add spreadsheets, graphics, and other files.

What's different in WP9:

With every new version of WordPerfect certain items are added, others are renamed, still others are found in a new location. The items renamed or moved in version 9 are:
  • QuickSpots provided direct access to editing features for certain objects in a document, such as paragraphs or tables. WordPerfect 9 improves on this idea by including more than 20 different Property Bars that appear when you click on a particular object. Property Bars change to fit your immediate needs. For example, click a table, and the Property Bar displays buttons for table editing tools. Click a graphic, and the Property Bar displays graphics editing tools.
  • WordPerfect 9 comes with its own built-in expert, which is ready to help you with any task. The PerfectExpert includes the best features of Quick Tasks, templates, and Coaches, combined with information from online Help and the power of a natural language interface to help you with everyday tasks. The PerfectExpert lets you quickly create complex documents using professionally designed templates.
  • The Tables and Graphics menus are not available any more; the editing features for tables and graphics are now available on the Property Bar. Click a table or graphic to display the Tables or Graphics Property Bar.
  • The File, Publish As and File, Send menus are consolidated as File, Send To.
  • The Outline and Bullets & Numbering features are consolidated in Insert, Outline/Bullets & Numbering.
  • The abbreviations feature is renamed QuickWords and is moved to Tools, QuickWords.
  • Help Online, which was used to access additional technical and product information, is renamed Corel Web site.
  • Initial Document Style is renamed and is moved to File, Document, Current Document Style.
  • Initial Document Font is renamed and is moved to File, Document, Default Font.
  • Editing level styles When you organize text using bulleted lists, numbered lists, and outlines, you can create a level style. For example, you can create a style that formats all level two headings in bold italic. In WordPerfect 9, you can edit a level style that you have created, but you cannot edit any of the preset styles provided with WordPerfect.

The Corel PerfectExpert can guide you through a detailed project such as creating a resume (even if you want to use other suite applications to create parts of the document), or it can guide you through a smaller task such as inserting a clipart image. The Corel PerfectExpert provides you with galleries of professionally-designed documents to choose from, and you can change the layout and content in any number of ways to match your needs.
  • With the addition of HTML forms support, Corel WordPerfect continues to lead the industry in Internet publishing technology. Using the Internet Publisher, you can add form fields to your web document. These fields include radio buttons, check boxes, selection lists, and text boxes, making the gathering of information easier than ever. You can insert sound clips, image maps, and even Java applets to make your page exciting and easy to navigate. Corel WordPerfect supports HTML specifications 2.0 and 3.2, and includes some additional browser-specific tags recognized by Netscape Navigator 3.0, Netscape Communicator 4.0 and Internet Explorer version 3.0 and higher.
  • Corel WordPerfect pioneered the ability to link text to documents and bookmarks with the Hypertext feature. Corel WordPerfect 7 added the ability to link to a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) on the Internet. Corel WordPerfect 8 continuesto improve this capability with the QuickLinks feature. When you type text that begins with "www," "ftp," "http," or "mailto," QuickLinks automatically converts it to an Internet link. You can even modify QuickLinks to convert the link to more meaningful terms. For example, when you type "www.corel.com," QuickLinks can replace the visible text with "Corel" and create a link to the Corel home page at URL http://www.corel.com.
  • Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 is the first software suite to support the Intel Pentium with MMX technology. You do not need to have a computer equipped with MMX technology to run Corel WordPerfect 8. However, an MMX-enhanced computer can improve the performance of Corel WordPerfect by reducing the time it takes to redraw bitmap and vector graphics and improving speed in other areas.
  • The new Drawing Layer lets you draw graphics objects directly on top of text, group graphics objects, and set the order of graphics objects. Create lines and shapes with arrowheads, polygons, circles, and more. Add color, gradient fills, and patterns to give extra polish to your documents. You can even draw over the top of clipart or a chart you've inserted into your document.
  • Tables have always been a hallmark of Corel WordPerfect. You can insert tables that span the full page width, or just a portion of it. When you a click on a table, the table Property Bar appears giving you one-click access to size rows dynamically within a table and quickly join or split cells with a single click and drag. Formatting is easy using QuickFormat for tables. Simply select the table cell that contains the formatting you like, choose QuickFormat, and apply the format to the cell you want to modify.
  • Corel WordPerfect 7 added Spell-As-You-Go, a timesaving feature that lets you correct spelling errors as you type. Corel WordPerfect 8 adds Grammar-As-You-Go, another timesaving feature that lets you recognize and fix common grammar problems as you type. For example, a phrase such as "they is home" is marked in the document. Right-click the marked phrase and choose from a list of possible suggestions, or ignore the marked phrase and move on.
  • Archive previous versions of your files
  • Retrieve any archived version of a file
  • View any archived version of a file
  • Compare archived files to see the differences between them
  • Attach meaningful information to each archived version that can be viewed in the document history window
  • Track multiple users of a common file
  • Delete any archived file from the history list
  • Specify how many versions to keep in the document history list
  • Protect a specific archived version from being discarded from the history list
  • A structured view of the document providing the WYSIWYG view of the document on one side and a tree view on the other.
  • Improved graphics support so that graphics and the markup associated with the graphic can be imported and exported with the SGML document.
  • Automatic mapping for ISO characters during the DTD compiling process so multi-national characters are mapped to the appropriate characters in the editor. (Characters that do not fall within the ISO character sets can still be mapped by hand.)
  • Improved importing and exporting to handle white space in SGML documents better.

Where did it go?

  • QuickSpots provided direct access to editing features for certain objects in a document, such as paragraphs or tables. Corel WordPerfect 8 improves on this idea by including over 20 different Property Bars that appear when you click on a particular object. Property Bars change to fit your immediate needs. For example, click a table, and the Property Bar displays buttons for table editing tools. Click a graphic, and the Property Bar displays graphics editing tools.
  • Coaches walked you through small tasks, such as creating a header, and demos showed you an overview of a particular feature. But they didn't take into account the work you were trying to do right then. The PerfectExpert combines the best features from QuickTasks, templates, Help, and Coaches to help you accomplish your work more quickly. The PerfectExpert provides you with galleries of professionally designed documents to choose from, and you can change the layout and content in any number of ways to match your needs. Novices will appreciate the way the PerfectExpert provides a task-oriented approach to a sometimes overwhelming and complex application. More advanced users will like the flexibility and immediate help the PerfectExpert provides as they use the various features in Corel WordPerfect to create complex documents.
  • QuickFinder is directly available through the Open dialog box. Click File Open, then specify the drive or folder you want to search. In the Filename text box, specify a file type (such as *.wpd) or the file content (such as "Corel WordPerfect"). Then, click Find. Click About QuickFinder for more information.
  • The Insert menu has grown to include several types of document objects such as tables, graphics, watermarks, equations, headers and footers.
  • The Tables and Graphics menus are gone and the editing features for tables and graphics are now available on the Property Bar. Click a table or graphic to display the Tables or Graphics Property Bar.
  • The File>Publish as and File>Send menus are consolidated as File>Send to.
  • The Outline and Bullets & Numbering features are consolidated in Insert>Outline/Bullets & Numbering.
  • The abbreviations feature is renamed to QuickWords and moved to Tools>QuickWords.
  • Help Online, which was used to access additional technical and product information, is renamed to Corel Web Site.
  • Initial Document Style is renamed and have moved to File Document>Current Document Style.
  • Menus The menus in Corel WordPerfect 8 have undergone significant restructuring to improve access to the most frequently used features. The menus are also standardized across the suite applications to make learning each application easier. Right-click the menu to select a menu similar to one you used in a previous version of Corel WordPerfect. Initial Document Font is renamed and moved to File>Document>Default Font. [ Page top ]

Corel WordPerfect Office X3 Standard: A Review

Introduction

Corel WordPerfect Office X3 Standard is an excellent alternative to the Microsoft Office 2007 software which includes one of the best presentations products as well as a competitive spreadsheet product. Corel WordPerfect Office X3 is comprised four main software products:

WordPerfect X3 - Word processor. [See Image 1]

Quattro Pro X3 - Spreadsheet software. [See Image 2]

Presentations X3 - Presentations software. [See Image 3]

WordPerfect Mail - Email client. [See Image 4]

Corel WordPerfect Office X3 has all the features and tools you need for your day-to-day work, yet it is available at a price much lower than Microsoft Office 2007. Moreover, WordPerfect X3, Quattro Pro X3, and Presentations X3 all have features that you won’t find in that other office software suite. The highlight of these products lies in its highly interactive graphics user interface. You don’t have to keep on going to the menu bar again and again, as almost all features are accessible from the window pane located at one side of the main window.

The Presentations X3 software is the strongest product in the suite. This is probably due to the fact that Corel has developed some of the best graphics software, including CorelDraw and Paint Shop; this legacy shows in Presentations X3. The weakest product of the suite is WordPerfect Mail, which in no way could compete with Microsoft Outlook 2007 or even Thunderbird.

Alhough Corel WordPerfect Office X3 is cheaper than Microsoft Office 2007, bear in mind that the Corel WordPerfect Office X3 Standard version doesn’t include other valuable software like a database product, an HTML editor, and so on. There is always the option of the Office suite available absolutely free to consider also.

What’s Hot:

After getting habituated to using MS Word 2003, I found using WordPerfect X3 more convenient. The credit for this goes to the “Perfect Expert” located in the extreme left or right side. I never expected that finding and using various functions could be so quick and easy. Using Presentations X3 is a delight for me. Since the tools are available right in front of your eyes, you tend to be more creative and productive.

Price to Value (2 out of 5)

Corel WordPerfect Office X3 Standard is available for $299.99. Microsoft Office 2007 Standard is available for $399. The WordPerfect Office X3’s components, WordPerfect X3, Quattro Pro and Presentations X3 are indeed worth the cost. They all offer excellent features and a highly interactive user interface, which makes using the software easy.

What’s Not:

I would have expected Corel to sell WordPerfect Office X3 Standard at a much lower price considering the fact that excellent office software exists in OpenOffice, which is free. I would suggest that the company bring down the price level to around $200, as this would surely boost its sales.

To be frank, if I had to purchase an office suite I would spend the extra $100 and purchase Microsoft Office 2007 Standard over the same product from Corel, though even Office 2007 is also over priced. If you can’t afford to spend that much, the best option is OpenOffice, which carries most of the functions of these costlier products.

Installation & Setup (4 out of 5)

Corel Office WordPerfect X3 Standard is 242MB in size, which is quite small considering that these days office software can suck up to a 1GB of space. Installation was easy and there were no hiccups or complicated questions during my installation and setup.

User Interface (5 out of 5)

The highlight of Corel WordPerfect Office X3 is its highly interactive and easy to understand user interface. While creating your project you don’t have to keep on crossing large distances across the screen as all the menus are available on screen.

The best thing I found in Corel WordPerfect Office X3 is the “Perfect Expert.” In fact I would consider this to be the greatest asset in WordPerfect Office X3, and makes it worth buying. It opens in the form of thin side pane when you choose to display it. It performs two important functions:

  • It displays all menus and functions, which makes choosing any you need easy. Within the main headings of the menus there are other sub-menus, and selecting them was also smooth. [See Image 5 and 6]
  • As the name “Perfect Expert” implies, this feature explains the meaning of prominent menus and features. Whichever function you select you will see its meaning explained at the bottom, in the form of tips. If a certain function is what you are looking for you can immediately select it without traveling here and there across the screen searching for that function. If you need the detailed information about the feature you can even get more help. [see image 7]

“Perfect Expert” performs the dual function of training you and also easing navigation through the program. It is available on all the software products in Corel WordPerfect Office X3 Standard except WordPerfect Mail. This highly creative feature helps lessen any learning curves and increases your creativity and productivity.

Another important aspect of Corel WordPerfect Office X3 is that you can open your document in various modes like Microsoft or WordPerfect.

I would have expected rich graphics in the user interface with modern looks and colors. When you open Corel WordPerfect Office X3 the first feel you get is that you have opened some older product. The looks of the icons and even the arrows of the “Perfect Expert” seem old fashioned. This is in contrast to highly rich and ultra modern looks of MS Office 2007. In fact the greatest difference between WordPerfect Office X3 and MS Office 2007 is in their look and feel. Corel WordPerfect Office X3 offers excellent features and a cool user interface but it’s lagging behind in appearance.

Product Features (4 out of 5)

Most Office Suites provide many of the same functions, although each has improved on their previous versions. At this stage the attention seems to have shifted from providing more features to creating your documents easily with minimum navigation across the screen. This is clearly visible in “Perfect Expert” in Corel WordPerfect Office X3.

Corel WordPerfect Office X3 has numerous features. Some of which I found quite new, interesting, and productive are described below:

  • While creating your word document if you wish to search for something or open Yahoo mail, for example, you don’t have to leave your document and go to the related software. In WordPerfect X3 there is a toolbar below the standard toolbar (this terminology is taken from MS Office) which carries various Internet related options. [See Image 9]

When you are typing your document in WordPerfect X3, you will see the words appearing in a small window in a toolbar below the menu bar. When you type a few initial letters the words related to it open in this window and they can be selected for our document.

Selecting any function or the tools from “Perfect Expert” is very easy and convenient. [See Image 11]

One of the interesting tools is the “Draw Picture” that helps you draw the picture right within your document.

  • Another useful feature is the “TextArt” which enables you insert text with various shapes including 3D. [See Image 13]

You can create the PDF files from WordPerfect Office X3.

Creating the spreadsheets with Quattro Pro X3 is very convenient. Using functions and adding effects from “Perfect Expert” are a breeze.

Of the four software products within Corel WordPerfect Office X3, the best software is Presentations X3. In this software there is a thin window towards the extreme right in the main window that carries the tabbed options of: Slide Editor, Slide Outliner, Slide Sorter and QuickPlay. This makes it easy to edit the slides and see the slide show.

In Presentations X3, clicking the “Perfect Expert” window activates another thin window that carries various drawing tools making it easier for you to insert various shapes and fill colors.

One interesting feature within Presentations X3 is creating the bitmap image within your slides. [See Image 14]

Even in Presentations X3, adding various effects and using functions from “Perfect Expert” is easy and convenient. It greatly enhances your creativity and productivity.

Within WordPerfect Mail saving various types of searches in the folders can be very useful.

Apart from this, Corel WordPerfect Office X3 has many other excellent features which are easy to comprehend and utilize.

WordPerfect Mail X3 is very ordinary software. There are a number of better email clients available for free. Maybe Corel should think of tying-up with software like Thunderbird, to include it within WordPerfect Office X3 instead. Considering the high price of the software I would have expected an excellent email client from Corel, but this one is disappointing. This convinces me more that the price of the software should be reduced.

At the price-tag that the company is offering Corel WordPerfect Office X3, it could have included more software in the suite, like that of database.

WordPerfect X3

Suggested Features

Reduce the price of Corel WordPerfect Office X3 to a more reasonable $200.

Enrich the graphics further with more colors and modern looks.

Corel WordPerfect Office X3 is an excellent alternative to Microsoft Windows 2007. Corel has been a specialist in creating world-class graphics and it shows in its Presentations X3, which is better than PowerPoint. The other two products in the suite, WordPerfect X3 and Quattro Pro X3 are highly competitive.

The highlight and the strength of WordPerfect Office X3 Standard is its highly interactive user interface with “Perfect Expert.” It makes using various features within each product easy to use and convenient, thus increasing your productivity.

Corel WordPerfect Office X3 Standard hits most high marks except in its price. I think around $200 would have been appropriate for this suite. All these major companies seem to increase the price of their popular products well beyond the reasonable limits. Corel should take initiative to reverse this trend.

Creating graphics for a full screen PDF presentation

This tutorial will show you how to create great looking presentation graphics with CorelDRAW X3. Take advantage of the more powerful design features of CorelDRAW to make polished, detailed, professional presentations. You can easily create great-looking presentations with CorelDRAW by exporting your document as a full screen PDF. You make your presentation stand out by creating eye-catching master pages, using charts to get your message across, and adding navigational buttons. For best results, start with a new document with a landscape orientation.

You can make change an open document’s orientation by clicking the  Landscape  button on the property bar.

The size of the document doesn’t matter, as the end result, the full screen PDF, will fit to the screen.

Creating the master page

Now, you’ll create a master page, which contains all the design elements — such as backgrounds, logos or titles —  that will be shown on all pages.

1. Click  Window > Dockers > Object Manager.  The Object Manager docker opens at the right side of the screen.

2. In the Object Manager, right-click  Master Page , and click  New Master Layer  (all pages).

3. Rename this layer  General , and a new layer,  General (all pages),  is created.

4. Next, import an image for the background by clicking  Window > Dockers > Connect , and dragging the desired image or clipart onto the page.

5. Scale the image to fit the page by dragging the midpoints on the top and side of the image.

Regardless what image you chose for the background, it will likely interfere with text and other messages. To make the text and messages stand out, you should create some information boxes.

6. To insert the information boxes, create two rectangles as shown below by using the Rectangle tool from the toolbox.

7. To round the corners of the rectangles, select the rectangle, and then choose the Shape tool from the toolbox.

8. The rectangle has four anchor points, one in each corner. When you drag one of these points, you can round the corners. Notice that the property bar is context-sensitive, so it displays controls directly related to what you’re doing.

To the right of these fields, there’s’ a lock icon. When you disable this lock, you can round the corners separately.

9. Now, fill the rectangles using the  Fill  tool in the toolbox with 50% gray, which is works well for white text.

10. Next, create a black area at the top of the rectangles that will contain text, by drawing a horizontal line using the  Bezier  tool.

11. Click the  Smart Fill  tool, select black, and fill the area.

12. The rectangle to the left will be used as a navigational area, and the one to the right will be used for the actual information. You might want to draw a darker grey line to separate a headline of text from the sub-information using the  Bezier  tool.

You can draw a perfectly horizontal line by pressing the Ctrl key and clicking the start and endpoint of the line.

13. You can change the thickness of the line on the property bar by selecting the line with the Pick tool. You can change the line color simply by right- clicking a color in the Color palette.

Now you can put a company logo into the top-right frame by clicking File > Import, browsing your computer to find the logo, and clicking the  Import  button in the Import dialog box.

Insert header text using the  Text  tool to complete the master page:

Now you have the master content, which will be consistent throughout all pages.

Feel free to experiment with the different information containers. The previous image shows another example, in which the left bottom frame will contain navigational buttons.

Now you can start to work on the content of the individual pages. To switch from the Master page to the individual pages, double-click the page icons:

Creating pie charts

On this page, you will draw a pie chart of five pieces.

  • Draw a circle with the  Ellipse  tool, and fill it with a light orange color.
  • Copy the circle, and paste it 4 times.
  • Select the top circle, and select the  Shape  tool.

The outline of the circle will appear with a dotted line and an anchor point at the top of the circle. When you drag this anchor point counter clockwise, you create pie slices by dragging inside the circle, and line-segments, when you drag outside the circle.

  • Drag the anchor point to an angle 36 degrees to create the first pie slice.

  • Darken the orange color by pressing  Ctrl  and clicking black in the Color palette once or twice. For every click, you add 10% of black to the orange color.
  • Repeat the steps with the other circles, making the slices bigger and darker in colour as you go along.
  • Add some white text next to the slices.

Creating flow charts

Flow charts are another way to communicate complex information. CorelDRAW has many ready-made symbols designed specifically for flow charts. And you can connect the symbols with lines that snap to the symbols. When you rearrange the symbols in the chart, the lines will automatically follow the symbols.

In the toolbox, you will find the  Basic Shapes  flyout.

This flyout contains many tools for adding a variety of ready-made to your drawing, including the  Flowchart Shapes  tool. When you click any of these tools, you can click the  Perfect Shapes  button on the property bar to access the available shapes.

To add a shape, just select it, and and click the in your drawing. You can enhance a shape by adding a shadow using the  Drop Shadow  tool from the  Interactive Tools  flyout

  • Using the Drop Shadow tool, click the shape that you want to apply the shadow to.
  • Drag from the center or side of the object until the drop shadow is the size you want.

To add finishing touches to the flowchart, you can add connector lines between shapes. You can customize connector lines by modifying their thickness and adding arrowheads.

The Connector Tools flyout offers tools for creating a variety of connector lines, such as straight, right-angled, and more.

Creating interactive navigational buttons

You might have noticed navigational buttons in the bottom left box in the sample image. These are a series of triangles that offer document navigation opitons.

You can make any shape in your drawing interactive by right-clicking it and clicking  Internet Links,  which provides a list of the pages in your document. Just select the appropriate page for your button.

Publishing your presentation as a full screen PDF

Finally, it’s time to publish your document as a full-screen PDF.

Click  File > Publish To PDF.

In the  Publish To PDF  dialog box, click the Settings button.

In the  PDF Settings  dialog box, click the  Document  tab, and enable the  Full Screen  and  Include   hyperlinks , and click the  OK  button.

When you open the PDF, it opens in full screen.

The X3 does a better job than most presentation projectors with both standard definition and high definition signals. Deinterlacing is certainly good enough for conference room and classroom video applications. Creating graphics for a full screen PDF presentation in CorelDRAW® Graphics Suite X3

1. First steps

You can create great looking presentation graphics with CorelDRAW X3 . To show your slide-show in full screen, you just have to export your document as a full screen PDF.

Here is how to create your slide show, step by step:

Open CorelDRAW X3 and start a new document.

Click the Landscape button in the Property bar.

The size of the document doesn’t matter, as the end result, the full screen PDF, will fit to the screen.

2. Creating the master page

First, you need to create a master page. A master page contains all the design elements that will be shown on all pages, e.g. the background, a logo, a title etc.

Select Window | Dockers | Object Manager. A Docker opens at the right side of the screen:

Right click on the Master page, and select New Master Layer.

Rename this layer “General”, and a new layer, “Master General”, is created.

Select a suitable image for the background from the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X3 CD number 3. Insert the CD. Select the Window menu | Dockers | Scrapbook | Browse. Select the desired image or clipart and drag it from the docker on to the page, and it will be inserted in your document. Scale the image until it fits the page, by dragging the midpoints on the top and side of the image.

No matter what image you have chosen for the background, it will always interfere with text and other messages. Therefore you should create some information boxes that will make the text and messages stand out.

To create the information boxes, insert two rectangles like shown in the picture below by using the rectangle tool from the tool bar.

To round the corners of the rectangles, select the rectangle. Select the Shape Tool from the tool bar.

The rectangle has 4 anchor points, one in each corner. When you drag one of these points, you can round the corners.

Notice that the Property Bar follows your move with the mouse, indicating that you can type the rounding in those fields.

To the right of these fields, you will find a lock icon. When you disable this lock, you can round the corners separately.

Fill the rectangles with 50% grey by using the Fill Tool. This colour is good for white text.

To create the black area at the top of the rectangles, draw a horizontal line using the Bezier Tool (see screenshot below). Click on the Smart Fill Tool and select black to fill the area.

The rectangle to the left will be used as a navigational area, while the rectangle to the right will be used for the actual information. You might want to draw a darker grey line to separate a headline of text from the sub-information.

To draw the line, select the Bezier Tool in the row of Freehand Tools.

Click on the page, press the Ctrl key, and click on the right side of the page. You have now created a horizontal line.

Select the Pick Tool and you can change the thickness of the line in the Property bar.

Right click a colour in the Colour palette, and you will change the colour of the line.

Put your company logo into the right top frame by selecting the File-menu | Import. Browse your computer to find the logo, and click the Import button in the Import dialog box.

Insert the header text with a slightly subdued colour (e.g. 30% black) by using the Text Tool:

Now you have the master content, which will be consistent throughout all pages.

Feel free to experiment with the different information containers. The previous image shows another example, in which the left bottom frame will contain navigational buttons.

Now you can start to work on the content of the individual pages. To switch from the Master page to the individual pages, double click the page icons:

Use the clipart on the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X3 CD no. 2 or your own images to reinforce your messages. See the first picture in this tutorial.

3. Creating pie charts

In the second page example you will see a pie chart. CorelDRAW X3 doesn´t contain a chart program feature, so you will have to create the pie chart manually. Here is how:

Add a new page by clicking the “plus” button at the bottom of the page.

On this page you will draw a pie chart of five pieces:

Start by drawing a circle with the Ellipse Tool. Fill it with a light orange colour. Copy the circle, and paste it 4 times.

Each of the circles must be sliced in order to create a pie chart like the one shown in the picture.

CorelDRAW X3 has a feature that makes it possible to transform a circle into pie-pieces or line-segments. You can control this feature with the Shape Tool.

Select the top circle, and select the Shape Tool. Now the outline of the circle will appear with a dotted line and an anchor point at the top of the circle. When you drag this anchor point counter clockwise, you create pie slices by dragging inside the circle, and line-segments, when you drag outside the circle.

Drag the anchor point until the angle show 36 degrees in the Property bar.

You have created the first pie-slice.

Give the piece a darker orange colour, by Ctrl-clicking the black colour in the colour-palette once or twice. For every click you add 10% of black to the orange colour. Or use whatever colour you like.

Repeat the steps with the other circles, making the slices bigger and darker in colour as you go along.

Write some text, e.g. in white, and place the text next to the slices.

4. Creating flow charts

Another way to communicate complex matters is by using a flow chart. CorelDRAW X3 has many ready made symbols that you can use to create a flow chart. And you can also connect the symbols with lines that snap to the symbols. When you rearrange the symbols in the chart, the lines will follow the symbols.

In the Tool box, you will find the Basic Shape Tool.

This line of tools contains many ready made shapes for you to use. Among the tools are the Flowchart Shapes. When you click this tool, the Property Bar will reveal the available shapes, when you click the Perfect Shapes button.

Select one of the shapes, and drag your mouse to create the chosen shape. Create further shapes to finish the flowchart. Add text and shadows.

How do you add shadows? In the Tool Box, you will find a line of Interactive tools, just below the Text Tool. In this line of tools, you can find the Interactive Drop Shadow Tool.

Select the shape that you want to apply the shadow to, and then select the Drop Shadow Tool. Drag the mouse out from the shape and you have created the shadow.

Finish the flowchart by creating lines that connect the shapes. You can change the thickness of all the lines in the Property Bar. You can also add arrow heads to the lines.

When you use a special Line Tool, the Interactive Connector Tool, the lines snap to the shapes. This means, that if you decide to change the order of the shapes, the lines rearrange accordingly.

5. Creating interactive navigational buttons

As you can see in the pictures of this tutorial, there are some navigational buttons in the bottom left box. These are in the form of triangles, that points to the first page, the previous page, next page and the last page.

You can make everything in your drawing interactive. The easiest way to do this is to select the button (symbol) and then right-clicking, and selecting Internet Links in the drop down menu. You then have a list of choices including a list of the pages in your document. You just have to select the appropriate page for your button.

6. Publishing your presentation as a full screen PDF

Finally, you can post these pages on the Internet, or as a full screen PDF. To publish your presentation as a PDF , select the File-menu | Publish To PDF.

The Publish To PDF dialog box opens, requesting you to save the file. In the right bottom corner of this box, click on the Settings button and another more complex dialog box opens:

Click on the Document option, and select Full Screen and Include hyperlinks. Finish by clicking the OK button.

When you open the PDF, it opens in full screen.
