65+ Real-World Project-Based Learning Ideas for All Ages and Interests

Find and implement solutions to real-world problems.

Collage of project based learning ideas, including a school garden and volunteering with seniors

Project-based learning is a hot topic in many schools these days, as educators work to make learning more meaningful for students. As students conduct hands-on projects addressing real-world issues, they dig deeper and make personal connections to the knowledge and skills they’re gaining. But not just any project fits into this concept. Learn more about strong project-based learning ideas, and find examples for any age or passion.

What is project-based learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) uses real-world projects and student-directed activities to build knowledge and skills. Kids choose a real-world topic that’s meaningful to them (some people call these “passion projects”), so they’re engaged in the process from the beginning. These projects are long-term, taking weeks, months, or even a full semester or school year. Students may complete them independently or working in small groups. Learn much more about project-based learning here.

What makes a good PBL project?

In many ways, PBL is more like the work adults do in their daily jobs, especially because student efforts have potential real-world effects. A strong PBL project:

  • Allows students voice and choice throughout the project
  • Combines elements of many disciplines
  • Includes collaboration with public partners, such as universities, community organizations, or businesses
  • Produces a public product that is seen by those outside the school community
  • Covers a complete process, including activities like research, design, production, marketing or public awareness, and enlisting supporters or investors

Connect learning to the real world, 100+ project-based learning ideas for every age.

“Everything begins with an idea.” – Earl Nightingale

When I started on my Project-Based Learning journey, I always wondered what other teachers were already doing with PBL in classrooms around the country and world. I remember joining Ning sites and finding other teachers who were doing PBL, it was like a dream come true to chat and discuss and learn.

With the growth of Twitter, blogging, and conference I was able to meet educators from around the world who have inspired me to go deeper into Project-Based Learning. Their ideas were what got me started documenting projects and step-by-step practices that would enhance any PBL experience.

PBL is growing because it engages and empowers students to learn experientially and share that learning in new and unique ways that go well beyond the classroom. Yet, many teachers are asking: How do we plan and implement PBL? How do we “fit it in” our current curriculum? How do we assess it using our current grading guidelines? How do we manage this type of learning?

These are all real concerns and questions that cannot be dismissed. PBL takes time to plan, implement, manage, and assess. Then it takes time to tweak, improve, and highlight.

If you asked any teacher, administrator, parent, school board member, student, or community member to list their top goals for an academic program, you would see achievement, 21st-century competencies, equity, and motivation all at the top.

Project-based learning is shown to work in all kinds of schools, in all different grade levels, with students of varying backgrounds and abilities.

So, if this is what the research says about PBL, then why do we still have so many schools falling into the test prep trap? Why do some many teachers feel like they cannot make the jump into PBL? Why haven’t we seen a nationwide movement towards PBL as a best and effective practice for all students?

It comes back to HOW to do PBL in the midst of standards and curriculum. I’ve put together a free workshop to show you the 5-step process to do just that.

I’m holding three workshops this week (for K-5, 6-12, and school leaders):

  • For Elementary Teachers (K-5 Workshop)
  • For Middle School and High School Teachers (6-12 Workshop)
  • For School Leaders (Admin and Central Office Workshop)

How School Leaders Can Support Student Voice and Agency

Administrators can empower students to take a hands-on approach to learning by creating opportunities for them to make meaningful decisions about their school.

Photo of middle school student painting wall mural

Many educators say, “Students are at the heart of everything we do.” As a school leader, I want to make sure this is a lived truth. We make so many decisions each day, all of which impact students: programming teacher schedules, planning professional development offerings, staffing extracurricular activities, organizing enrichment trips.

These tasks require many hands to ensure that students’ experiences are fruitful and authentic and shape their growth. However, traditional education often places students as passive recipients of these experiences.

My leadership team works to ensure that students have a more hands-on approach to learning. Shouldn’t students have a voice, platform, and presence in decisions that impact them? Empowering students to take ownership has elevated my school culture and created the next generation of leaders. Here’s what student-led systems might look like in your school.

Student-led conferences

In recent years, we’ve seen a shift from traditional parent-teacher conferences to student-led conferences (SLCs). As educators, regardless of where we come from, we value empowering young people to become autonomous, take ownership, and develop leadership skills.

I’ve seen a variety of SLCs across school settings; the commonality is that students have a platform to share their growth with parents and guardians. For insight on how to get started, I recommend Paul Emerich France’s Edutopia article titled “ Getting Started With Learner-Led Conferences .”

As administrators, it’s our role to ensure that teachers understand how best to support students and create effective systems. SLCs not only empower young people and allow them to engage in reflection; they also help families to garner a sense of how their child is doing and to hear it from their child—with the support of a teacher, adviser, or administrator.

Student Tribunals

Many schools have adopted more restorative approaches to discipline. In 2019, reports showed that schools across the U.S. experienced significant decreases in suspensions and in disorderly conduct. Another student-led system, the student tribunal, gives students an opportunity to evaluate their peers’ infractions.

This system doesn’t work for serious, high-stakes incidents, but I’ve found tribunals, or peer courts, wonderful for lower-level infractions—such as when students repeatedly call out in class.

Giving students a platform allows them to take a vested interest in the development of their peers and helps peers learn how to self-regulate. I’ve found Sean Sauro’s writing about the benefits of a student-led youth court process particularly helpful when thinking about this model.

Just as students value working in groups in the classroom, they similarly value learning from their mistakes by hearing from their peers. One student in my school articulated the following after being “tried” by her peers: “It was a little scary because you have kids you know with their eyes on you. I do feel like the punishment they gave me was fair. It’s different when you have kids your age speaking to you about [something you did wrong]. It makes me reflect more, like I really don’t want to [do that] again.”

Getting started requires careful planning:

  • First, it’s important to establish the “what.” For which infractions will students go before their peers? Which are not on the table for peer review?
  • Next, have a group of students who are trained to weigh in on the tribunal system. You may pull from your student government club or another space where students are interested in this work.
  • Have a few practice runs with faux infractions, and revise your system as necessary.

We run a student tribunal twice a month, which gives students time to review the discipline issues at hand, confer with peers on potential repercussions, and elicit feedback from teachers who supervise the system.

When school leaders support teachers and staff who are interested in supervising this work, they can build capacity, shift school culture, and empower students’ voices.  For more information on what this system might look like, check out these resources: the Teaching Channel Video on Youth Court and this class-designed school justice system in Massachusetts .

Student-led Projects

I’ve seen student-led projects change school culture. For example, a student-led newspaper empowers students to make their voices heard, surface issues of importance to them, and share their perspectives with their school—all while reinforcing literacy skills.

Students choose what they want to write about, interview school and local community members, and provide valuable data points. I’ve seen newspaper clubs lend tremendous insight about school issues, highlighting areas for growth that may otherwise have gone unheard.

Community service projects also amplify, not only students’ voices, but their actions. Giving students opportunities to give back, demonstrate leadership, exhibit compassion, and invoke change in their world is powerful.

I saw students organize over the summer to determine a high-stakes, schoolwide community service project they wanted to initiate the following year. Each grade had a role, a timeline, and benchmarks designed by the community service team. That year, students raised funds and improved access and resources for a school 2,000 miles away.

Projects can be as low-stakes as sending cards to veterans, raising money, or organizing a campaign to raise awareness for a cause. As a school leader supporting this work, consider which teachers/staff members you might empower to lead these initiatives. You may provide coaching to build capacity around community service, professional development opportunities, or surveys for students (from which to glean what initiatives are of interest to your community). So long as students have voice and choice, it’s a win.

Whether you’re adopting SLCs, student tribunals, a service project, or a new club, make sure students are at the forefront. Ask them what they want and need, and provide opportunities for them to share their lived experiences and perspectives. Consider: How can you ensure that your school culture reflects the diverse backgrounds of its students?  It’s our responsibility to ensure that our schools are spaces where students learn not only from teachers, but from, and alongside, their peers.

Understanding Project-Based Learning (PBL)

What is project based learning.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an educational approach that goes beyond textbooks and tests. It’s where students actively explore real-world problems and challenges, gaining knowledge and skills through hands-on projects. Project Based Learning is not just a teaching method; it’s a journey into the heart of learning, fostering critical thinking , creativity, and collaborative skills.

Key Principles of Project-Based Learning

Diverse students engaged in Project-Based Learning activities in a modern classroom.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is built on a set of core principles that distinguish it from traditional educational methods. These principles are the bedrock of creating a dynamic and effective Project Based Learning environment:

  • Student-Centered Learning: Project-Based Learning puts students at the heart of the learning process. They take the lead in their projects, making decisions, solving problems, and directing their learning paths. This autonomy builds confidence and a sense of ownership over their work.
  • Inquiry and Exploration: At the core of Project Based Learning is the spirit of inquiry. Students are encouraged to ask questions, seek out new information, and explore different perspectives . This approach fosters a deeper understanding and a more meaningful connection with the subject matter.
  • Real-World Relevance: Project Based Learning projects are often tied to real-world scenarios, making learning more relevant and engaging for students. By tackling issues that matter in the real world, students see the practical application of their studies and are more motivated to learn.
  • Collaboration: Project Based Learning often involves group work, where students collaborate , share ideas, and learn from each other. This collaborative environment helps develop communication and teamwork skills, which are vital in both academic and professional settings.
  • Reflection and Revision: An integral part of Project Based Learning is reflecting on what’s been learned and how it’s been learned. Students are encouraged to think critically about their work and make revisions, learning that iteration is a key part of the creative process.
  • Presentation and Sharing: Sharing their work with others is a common end-goal in Project Based Learning. This aspect helps students develop presentation skills and also allows for feedback from peers and teachers, which is crucial for learning and improvement.

For School Systems: What to Know about the Master’s in Public Education Management

Students at table talking conference room

The  Master’s in Public Education Management is designed for high-performing, dedicated mid-career professionals working in large urban school systems across the country. The 14-month, tuition-free program fosters the skills, knowledge and perspectives for outstanding leaders in mid-level leadership positions to deepen and strengthen their impact on schools, students, and communities.

Students in the Master’s program continue to work full-time in their roles in eligible urban school systems, including school districts, charter management organizations, and state education agencies. By continuing to serve their school systems full time for the duration of the program, students are able to directly apply their learning to their work, benefitting their organizations and the students they serve.

For school systems, having an employee in the Master’s program at TBC at Yale SOM is not only a way to invest in a specific individual’s development and build internal talent pipelines – it also means the school system gains from their new perspectives, applied learning, and growing network of other education leaders across the country.

What to Expect

Master’s program calendar and schedule.

Students travel to the Yale SOM campus in New Haven for five one-week sessions throughout the 14-month period of the program (from July through August of the following year). Throughout the program, students engage in monthly virtual sessions and independent work that bridges their in-person experiences. Students are expected to continue meeting the obligations of their professional roles, as well as the requirements of the program.

Independent Capstone Project

Professor Heidi Brooks presenting

The final requirement for successful completion of the program is an independent capstone project, allowing students to demonstrate their ability to apply new learning from the TBM coursework to drive improved and more equitable outcomes within the student’s school system.

Capstone projects are an opportunity for students to tackle a persistent challenge or bring new solutions to bear that ultimately benefit schools and students, with the benefit of structures and supports along the way, including a capstone adviser, faculty consultation, peer consultancy, and more. Students are asked to work with their manager to define a project that will be meaningful for the school system, in addition to meeting the requirements of the project.

Previous capstone projects have included:

  • Ensuring that students with disabilities have access to career and technical education (CTE), and that special education and CTE teams are collaborating to support students with their post-secondary plans.
  • Developing an innovative staffing and leadership structure to provide greater support to under-enrolled schools while remaining budget-neutral.
  • Creating a network-wide school operations dashboard to ensure clarity and aligned expectations on key metrics for operations staff, and school and network leaders.

Tim Walz’s Class Project on the Holocaust Draws New Attention Online

Mr. Walz, now the Democrats’ vice-presidential nominee, asked his high school students in 1993 which country was most at risk for genocide. Their prediction came to pass: Rwanda.

Tim Walz, wearing a suit and tie, gestures with his hands as speaks to a class of students.

By Neil Vigdor

  • Aug. 9, 2024

The prediction was spot on: Rwanda was barreling toward a devastating genocide.

It did not emanate from a think tank, but from a high school geography class in western Nebraska. The year was 1993. The teacher? Tim Walz, now the Democratic vice-presidential candidate and Minnesota governor.

Thirty-one years later, the class project is drawing new attention. Mr. Walz, a geography teacher at the time, had asked his students to take what they had learned about the Holocaust to predict which nation was most at risk for genocide.

“They came up with Rwanda,” Mr. Walz said, talking about the project at a conference last month . “Twelve months later, the world witnessed the horrific genocide in Rwanda.”

The project was reported on in a 2008 On Education column for The New York Times that has been widely shared in recent days. Mr. Walz had drawn the attention of the reporter, Samuel G. Freedman, for an earlier column because Mr. Walz was the only K-12 teacher serving in Congress at the time, Mr. Freedman said.

“While I was interviewing Walz for the initial column, he told me how the genocide project was one of his proudest moments as an educator,” said Mr. Freedman, who is now a journalism professor at Columbia University . That sparked Mr. Freedman to revisit the story later.

Mr. Walz, when he delivered the lesson plan, had been teaching global geography in Alliance, Neb., and had been chosen for a Belfer fellowship to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum that was opening. Speaking at the conference last month, held by Esri, a company that makes G.I.S. software widely used in mapping, he said the project had a profound effect on his students and bred some cynicism.

“How could a bunch of students in western Nebraska, in Alliance, use a computer program and some past historical knowledge to come up with this?” he said. “Why was nobody doing anything about that?”

Several years later, when he was studying for his master’s degree in experiential education at Minnesota State University, Mankato, Mr. Walz wrote his thesis on Holocaust education, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported .

As governor, Mr. Walz signed a bill last year that requires high schools and middle schools to teach about the Holocaust, along with other genocides.

Engage Gen Z students by integrating TikTok into your teaching

A diy guide to starting your own journal, relieve student boredom by ‘activating’ lectures, emotions and learning: what role do emotions play in how and why students learn, can academic prenups help overcome barriers to interdisciplinary research.

Social media provides online spaces where individuals and communities can interact and share photos, videos, opinions and interests related to their daily lives, academic or work achievements, and social activities. This makes it a powerful educational tool.

Our current students are particularly interested in TikTok, which hosts short videos, covering everything from comedy, news and recipes to tutorials on computer repair. Educators can harness the popularity of TikTok to encourage students to generate and exchange their own ideas and acquire and evaluate new knowledge and skills.

Here are four simple ways to use TikTok in your teaching.

1. Personal presentations

At the beginning of the semester, tutors can ask students to record personal presentations, guiding them as to what key information should be included. What is covered in the introductory videos should be aligned to what criteria will be evaluated, such as the student’s interests, their major and their expectations for the course.

Once all the videos are published on TikTok, we can ask students to watch their classmates’ videos and comment on those they find interesting or have something in common with, encouraging students to form connections with one another.

2. Break topics into short simple segments

TikTok’s videos address concepts, explanations and demonstrations very concisely. They are ideal for breaking up topics into component parts that can be explained in just one- to three-minute segments.

Taking art history as an example, a series of short videos could be created, where each one explains the main characteristics of a different art movement such as the Renaissance, Realism, Impressionism and so on.

Tutors could develop a series of videos that summarise all the key concepts in a single unit or module so that these can be reviewed by students in the future.

  • Promoting learning with TikTok: 10 tips for engaging students
  • What I learned from spending three years researching TikTok
  • Resource collection: Social media: how to make it an academic friend not foe

3. Reflections of learning

Students can share their reflections on recent course materials or class activities through videos. For example, after discussing a topic in class, students may be asked to provide a personal reflection about their position or the conclusion they would draw regarding the topic discussed.

Such videos could also be used as a way to check reading comprehension. Instead of writing a summary, students can be asked to create a video about the assigned reading ahead of class.

For example, before a pedagogical theories class, the teacher may share a reading list covering different pedagogical theories such as constructivism, cognitivism, humanism, behaviourism, traditionalism, among others. Before the class, students must read the material and create a TikTok video where they discuss the main characteristics of the theories. These videos could be reviewed at the beginning of class to provide context for further detailed discussion about these theories and how they might be applied.

4. Presenting projects

TikTok videos can be used to evidence students’ work such as final projects.

Tutors could ask students to create a video pitch relating to their project, meeting set characteristics or evaluation criteria, such as: clear and engaging communication, keeping to a three-minute time limit, crafting a compelling introduction and conclusion, demonstrating how the project works.

For example, as part of the final project in a professional communication course, students record a TikTok video pitch in which they have to sell a product they have designed for the course. This provides a valuable learning experience for students but also gives the teacher additional evaluation evidence.

An alternative option is a video explaining the process of completing the final project, with similarly specified evaluation criteria, such as the input of all team members, reflections on what worked, what proved challenging and how the team found solutions, and explanations of the initial, middle and final sequences of the project's construction.

It is important to decide if your TikTok learning community will be closed, offering privacy to students, or open, allowing wider outreach and engagement . This will depend on the nature of the work or content you plan to share, on your students’ preferences, your teaching profile and your institution.

If the content you post is designed for public use, you can keep your community open. However, if the content you present contains intellectual property or personal details that you and your students do not wish to share, keep your community closed. If your students want the content they produce to be available for public use and public display, they can share this on their own public profiles.

To build a learning community , we recommend that students follow their classmates and teachers on TikTok.

The possibilities for using TikTok in our teaching are endless, so get creative and think about how you can adapt it to your needs.
