Why and How to Use YouTube Video Essays in Your Classroom

Tanner Higgin

Use this unique art form to build your students' media-literacy skills.

Why and How to Use YouTube Video Essays in Your Classroom

Like many of you, I've done a lot of thinking about how we can better prepare students to be thoughtful, responsible, and critical consumers and creators. While I don't have all the answers, I've come to one conclusion: Media-literacy education must deal with YouTube. According to a 2019 Common Sense study , 88% of teens use YouTube. And despite the fact that YouTube says it is only for those age 13 or older, 76% of 8- to 12-year-olds say they use the site as well.

I've come to one conclusion: Media-literacy education must deal with YouTube.

What's more, YouTube is a unique beast and can't just be tacked on. It has its own celebrities, culture, norms, and memes and has even given rise to the dreaded " YouTube voice ." But what I find particularly fascinating is that YouTube has its own genres and types of videos. One of these -- the video essay -- is something I think can be a great tool for media-literacy education. Here's why.

What Are YouTube Video Essays?

YouTube video essays are long-form (relative to many other internet videos) critical videos that make arguments about media and culture. They're usually meticulously narrated and edited, juxtaposing video footage, images, audio, and text to make an argument much like a writer would do in a traditional essay. As former YouTube talent scout Jeremy Kaye puts it , video essays "take a structured, in-depth, analytical, and sometimes persuasive approach, as opposed to the quick 'explainer' video style."

Pressing play on the YouTube video below will set third-party cookies controlled by Google if you are logged in to Chrome. See Google's cookie information for details.

Why Are They Great for Learning?

It's easy to dismiss a lot of what circulates on YouTube as frivolous, silly, or even obnoxious, but video essays are the opposite. They demand students' attention but not through cartoonish gesturing, ultra-fast editing, and shock value (which even some of the more popular educational YouTubers fall prey to) -- there's room to breathe in these essays. To capture attention, video essays use a time-tested trick: being flat-out interesting. They present compelling questions or topics and then dig into them using media as evidence and explication. This makes them a great match for lessons on persuasive and argumentative writing.

Video essays model for students how YouTube can be a platform for critical communication.

But what I really love most about video essays is that they have something at stake; they ground their arguments in important cultural or political topics, exposing the ways media represents gender or race, for instance, or how media evolves over time and interacts with the world at large. Most importantly, video essays model for students how YouTube can be a platform for critical communication.

How Can They Be Used in Classrooms?

First, a caveat: Most of the channels below offer content that'll work best in an upper-middle or high school classroom. Some videos can also be explicit, so you'll want to do some browsing.

1. Conversation starter or lesson hook : Many of these videos serve as great two- to 10-minute introductions to topics relevant to classrooms across the curriculum.

2. Active viewing opportunity : Since video essays present often complex arguments, invite students to watch and rewatch videos and outline their theses, key points, and conclusions.

3. Research project : Have students find more examples that support, or argue against, a video's argument. Students could also write a response to a video essay.

4. Copyright lesson : Video essays are a great example of fair use. Show students that by adding their own commentary, they can use copyrighted material responsibly.

5. Assessment : Have students create their own video essays to demonstrate learning or media-creation skills like editing.

Channels and Videos to Check Out

Image nerdwriter.

This is an eclectic channel that's hard to pin down. Basically, the video topics focus on whatever intrigues the channel's creator, Evan Puschak. There's everything from an analysis of painting to MLK's " I Have a Dream " speech to film to the history of the fidget spinner .

Vox runs the gamut of issues in politics, culture, and pop culture. Their explainer-style videos can serve as conversation starters, and since they publish multiple videos a week, there's no shortage of choices. Also, make sure to check out their playlists offering essays on everything from music to climate change .

Image Noisy Images

This channel does a masterful job of uncovering the layered meaning -- social, political, and cultural -- in hip-hop and other music. While most of these videos are mature and only suitable in very particular high school contexts, there's brilliant work on everything from the poetic rhythms of the hip-hop group Migos to music video minimalism . Any one of the videos on Noisy Images could inspire a great lesson or unit.

Image Lindsay Ellis

Video essays are just one thing Lindsay does on her channel, and she's really good at them. Her videos often deal with heady topics like " the other ," but she boils them down in accessible ways. She also isn't afraid to throw in a few jokes to keep things interesting.

Image Genius

There's tons here focused on music, with a specific emphasis on hip-hop lyrics. One of my favorite series is called Deconstructed . While Deconstructed videos aren't typical video essays, they present color-coded breakdowns of the rhyme schemes in hip-hop tracks. Students could apply this technique to their favorite songs or poems.

Deconstructed rap lyrics by Genius

Image Every Frame A Painting

This now-defunct channel has 30 videos with some of the best film analysis on YouTube. If you're looking to help students analyze the language of film, this is the channel to check out. One of my personal favorites focuses on the work of a film editor .

Image Kaptain Kristian

Kristian focuses a lot on cartoons and comics, which is a nice entry point for younger kids. Each of his videos touches on big ideas in storytelling. For instance, his examination of Pixar movies delves into their rich themes that break the often rote themes of other animated movies. This video would pair well with creative writing lessons or literary analysis.

Image CGP Grey

One of the more long-running essayists on YouTube, CGP Grey has a fast-talking style with a lot of animation but does a good job of answering head-scratching questions like, " What if the electoral college is tied? " or explaining complex issues like copyright in a digestible way .

Image Lessons from the Screenplay

While this channel focuses on how screenwriting underpins film, the lessons offered in each of this channel's video essays are broadly applicable to the craft of writing in general.

Image Kogonada

I saved this one for last because it's the least traditional. Kogonada is a former academic turned filmmaker who gained popularity through his Vimeo video essays that, for the most part, elegantly edit together film clips without any narration. These videos are great if you're teaching a video- and film-editing class or film appreciation/criticism. Creating a narration-less video would be an excellent final project for students.

Introduction

Advantages of youtube, disadvantages of youtube, works cited.

It is no secret that YouTube is one of the most visited websites in the whole world. This is because it is the leading website as far as video sharing is concerned. This paper traces YouTube back to the days of its inception and how it has evolved over time to be what it is today. I examine the advantages of this invention as well as the disadvantages

The 1920s: the first-ever display technology which was referred to as a cathode ray tube (CRT) is invented. This was the foundation of viewing videos of videos (Bug Club).

The 1970s: IBM Company comes up with a color display that had the first-ever color graphics adapter that rendered four colors. This meant that videos could now be seen in color (Bug Club).

2005: Youtube is co-founded by two gentlemen, Chad Hurley, and Steve Chen. The two were colleagues at PayPal. They worked as designers and engineers respectively. The two friends had met at a party and taken some videos. They experienced a lot of difficulty in trying to share the videos and that got them thinking about how many others on the globe found themselves in such a state. They decided to tailor a solution and it led to the birth of YouTube. The 15 th February 2005: The YouTube.com domain was activated 23 rd of April, 2005. Three months after the domain was activated, the first video “I at the zoo” is uploaded. Since then, YouTube has been responsible for transferring and sharing millions of videos the world over. The diagram below illustrates this:-

YouTube began with one video upload in 2005. Since then, the California-based company has seen major transformations and achievements. By December the same year of debut, YouTube’s pages received over million hits a day (Art). The groundbreaking video for YouTube was when the video entitled “lazy Sunday” was uploaded. The websites hits per day skyrocketed from 50 million to 250 million per day. The traffic to the website continued to skyrocket until they hit the 7000 million mark per day. Perhaps it was this success that made MySpace and Google come up with their versions of YouTube but they never saw the light of day. By May 2006, Google developed an interest in purchasing the company, and an agreement was realized. Google bought YouTube to the tune of 1,650 million dollars.

The diagram below sheds further light on the impressive growth of YouTube in the last five years.

sheds further light on the impressive growth of YouTube in the last five years.

One of the biggest advantages of YouTube is its critical role in entertainment. Whether it is a video of an event that you want to share with friends or a clip of a music video or a movie trailer, YouTube is the p[place to find that and more. This is the reason YouTube has become the third most visited website on the internet (Hardy).

Another important use for YouTube is helping Education. Even those that visit the website with only entertainment and leisure in mind learn something either through the video of a song or a video posted by an expert outlining the steps to follow in doing something. There are thousands of online video tutorials on almost any subject. Many students go to YouTube to access these education videos and tutorials.

Last but not least, YouTube has become a powerful tool for video marketing. As Jarboe explains in his book, a business entity can post a video on YouTube explaining the services and goods that it offers (26-42). The target audience is millions of potential viewers while it costs nothing at all to post the video. This is a very effective marketing tool for startups that may not have enough capital to invest in other forms of traditional marketing.

The biggest disadvantage has been the concern that YouTube infringes on copyrights of music, movies, and other types of videos. Despite the disclaimer of the company, users are still free to upload the videos at free will. Universal Music Group claimed that the company owed tens of millions as a result of copyright infringement. Youtube has had to tackle lawsuits in this regard (Zappone).

The other challenge YouTube has is revenue. While it attracts a lot of money through advertising on the website, the revenue collected is not seen enough to pay for the web sites maintenance alone. (Hardy)The company also faced a lawsuit that had nothing to do with videos. It was about their domain name. The issue was before youtube.com was registered, there was already another company by the domain utube.com. This company sued YouTube claiming that their choice of a name that resembled theirs had made them receive overwhelming traffic from people who were actually looking for YouTube.

If past performance is anything to buy, YouTube will no doubt continue growing in leaps and bounds. It is interesting to note that YouTube is only a few years old yet has managed to become one of the websites with the largest number of hits. YouTube has indeed impacted life both in the social as well as in the business aspects.

10 YouTube Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages and Disadvantages of YouTube

YouTube is an American online video sharing and social media platform. Owned by Google, it was launched in February 2005. More than one billion monthly users contribute to making it the second most visited website and the largest video search engine on the internet. Since its inception, the business model of YouTube has changed because of Google’s ownership. Apart from generating revenue from ads, it offers exclusive videos and movies that are paid content.

Google AdSense program has brought YouTube and creators together, making them beneficiaries. Evolution from small online video sharing to larger platforms, YouTube has bagged a revenue of $30.2 billion in 2022. As the subject is, advantages and disadvantages of YouTube, let us discuss the advantages first.

Advantages of YouTube

YouTube, as we know it, is growing day by day because of the way we are moving towards the visual form of content. It has been helping us in different ways for our entertainment needs. These are 5 advantages of YouTube –

1. YouTube is Free

YouTube gives you a platform to experiment or start without paying any fees. It is the video, that needs to be unique and creative, to make you stand out of the box. Startups also get a platform to advertise the product without adding to the initial investment. If one can invest some amount to market worldwide, YouTube has introduced YouTube premium-it is a paid subscription. Accessibility to YouTube Music Premium is an additional advantage of YouTube Premium.

A computer illiterate can also use YouTube because it is easy to use. Tutorials also help to develop a better understanding of this social media. Building a brand for startup businesses is feasible with YouTube. This platform allows us to connect to lots of people together and faster. Any kind of videos, music files, drawings, and animated clips can be uploaded. You can also interact with audiences by inviting their views. The good thing is, no special training or courses are to work with it. Other features include easy rating, privacy, quick feedback, and fast accessibility.

What can be expected if one can earn with entertainment or creativity or marketing. You can join hands with YouTube’s Google AdSense account and earn with uploaded videos. But before creating the account, you need to have your YouTube profile. The other ways of earning money through YouTube include selling digital products, sponsorships, merch and products, affiliate links, and many more.

4. Backlinks

Website owners having a YouTube profile page, on adding their website link, get backlinks from YouTube. That helps in boosting their SEO. While posting videos, you can add them to the description also. Thus, more and more people will come to know about your website as they visit it and this will give rise to your product. As good products or services on the internet can be marketed, so, are good videos. It is a stage of fame.

5. A diverse video platform

YouTube is probably the most diverse video platform in existence. With millions of creators working hard to deliver the best possible content to the viewers, you can find videos related to almost anything on YouTube. The types of YouTube channels you can consume is up to you. There is nothing preventing you from watching cooking channels, or a compilation of the goals from your favorite footballer. The sky is the limit. If you are into technology, you can check the best technology channels on YouTube . You can also livestream on YouTube if you want to.

Disadvantages of YouTube

Being one of the largest video hosting platforms doesn’t mean that YouTube is perfect. It still has a lot of flaws worth noticing. These are 5 of the disadvantages of YouTube –

1. Misinformation

Having said earlier, you can upload or watch videos without creating an account. In other words, it is an open public social media desk. Now, this creates a problem with copyright and privacy. YouTube has set many rules that should be followed while using it in a way, it tries to control in optimization terms. But still, there are chances of fake, misleading content that are uploaded, giving misinformation.

2. Copyright issues

A protection method that YouTube implements to protect exclusive content through various automated measures. These measures favor corporations for earning financial gains. In the case of content matching the already existing data, YouTube applies its matching policy as a warning. After four successful complaints, it deletes the content without informing.

3. Safety and well-being of children

Just throwing a warning that content is suitable for 18 years and above does not stop the children from watching explicit videos that are inappropriate for them. You might have seen teens posting and watching videos showing violence. Parent lock is the option to protect the children from such content. YouTube does not have any safeguard against such an act.

4. No said reasons for removal

YouTube exercises many rules for the starters. If any of it breaks, it disables your account. The reasons are many. This is one of the main reasons people go for a YouTube alternative . These are the reasons why YouTube bans your account –

  • If your content is not as per the Terms of Service and Community Guidelines, that should be agreed upon while creating a YouTube channel.
  • Repeated reports of a video, claiming copyright issues.
  • If your behavior towards people is incorrect, that includes sexual harassment, unacceptable comments, or spam, your content can be disabled or deleted.

5. YouTube wastes your time

Creating a YouTube account itself is not a time-wasting thing, but the endless supply of entertainment could be. If you create a YouTube channel and start using it responsibly by spending enough time outside the platform, this is not an issue for you. However, if you are a viewer spending hours scrolling through the endless YouTube Shorts, it could be a problem both mentally and physically. So, set a limit to the time you are on YouTube.

Each one of us has our parameters for weighing the advantages and disadvantages of any subject. There are many ways to judge the social media platform. In my opinion, these points were important to be studied, before any inference. And if you are interested, you may create a YouTube account .

Let’s take a look at the advantages and Disadvantages of Youtube:-

There are several advantages of YouTube:

  • It’s free to use: You can watch and upload videos on YouTube. However, to get the free services, now, you have to manage several advertisements, most of which can skip, but some of which need to play partially or wholly. YouTube Premium is a paid service that allows users to go ad-free.
  • Wide selection of content: There is a wide variety of content available on YouTube, including music videos, educational videos, movie trailers, and more, as we have mentioned above. The range is such that people have made entire careers by being YouTube content creators in several niches. For instance, for individuals seeking valuable insights on personal development and life guidance, the platform offers easy access to the best life coaches on YouTube .
  • Accessibility: You can access YouTube from any device with an internet connection, including your computer, smartphone, and tablet. It brings knowledge of the world, such as Ted Talks, to your room. You can even rent movies on YouTube.
  • Ease of use: YouTube has a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to find and watch videos. It even remembers your past viewing history and recommends similar videos.
  • Sharing: You can easily share videos from YouTube on social media and other websites. Additionally, while downloading videos from YouTube to your device is difficult, you can view downloaded videos offline on the YouTube platform and share their links with your friends and family. Moreover, you can also use a video downloader to save YouTube videos on your device for offline viewing. For creators, tools like a  YouTube timestamp generator  can be particularly useful for highlighting key moments in their videos.
  • Environmental Sustainability: YouTube has made efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by using renewable energy sources and increasing energy efficiency. However, it is still a large consumer of energy.

Disadvantages

However, there is nothing as a free lunch, and thus, it is only natural that there are also some disadvantages to using YouTube. Some of the disadvantages of using YouTube are as follows-

  • Quality and Copyright: The quality of videos on YouTube can vary significantly as not all videos create professionally, and some are pirated from other places and uploaded to YouTube.
  • Misinformation: Some videos on YouTube contain misinformation or false information. Fact-checking information you find online, including those on YouTube, is essential. Taking the lead from personal vlogs can be exceptionally dangerous as that information can be precise to the people involved and might not be the best for you as an individual.
  • Inappropriate content: While YouTube has strict policies to remove inappropriate content, some videos may not be suitable for all audiences. YouTube has a feature that helps keep children away from adult content.
  • Advertisements: Some users may find YouTube ads annoying or intrusive as these adverts often appear in the middle of a video and can take one away from the story involved.
  • Privacy: YouTube collects data from its users and may share it with third parties. It is a concern for users who value their privacy. Ads are also a concern of privacy issues, as some adverts that YouTube gets are from websites that have used cookies to remind users to return to their products.
  • Environmental Sustainability: YouTube uses significant energy to support its operations, including the servers and data centers needed to store and transmit video content.
  • Social sustainability: YouTube has faced criticism for its impact on its users’ mental health and well-being, particularly young people. While this remains a problem, YouTube has implemented policies and tools to address these issues from now on.
  • Paying Its Creators: While YouTube has been successful as a business, with solid growth in revenue and profits, there have been concerns about the fairness of the revenue-sharing model for creators. Furthermore, some people have expressed concerns regarding using algorithms to recommend content, which can have unintended consequences for creators and users.
  • Creating an echo chamber: Like many other apps and websites on the internet, YouTube works on an algorithm. This algorithm sometimes recommends to users the kind of content they have engaged with before, and this can sometimes lead to the creation of an echo chamber where you repeatedly hear the same rhetoric and the same creators. However, this only happens sometimes and is more expensive than YouTube.

Thus, you can see both advantages and disadvantages of using YouTube. However, it is improving daily, and few video platforms have become as popular, especially in India. Thus, we must agree that YouTube is here to stay as it has stayed for so long.

Top 10 Benefits of Using YouTube in the Classroom

Top 10 Benefits of Using YouTube in the Classroom

The accessibility of free, high-quality, and instructional internet films, available on websites such as YouTube, is a natural complement to contemporary educational settings. Everyone—teachers, students, and parents—agrees that watching videos on the internet may be a practical learning and teaching tool. YouTube’s most prominent feature is that its videos may be helpful in many other kinds of educational systems, particularly online education.

As a relatively recent development in education, video-assisted learning has quickly gained popularity by providing students with an engaging means of gaining insight into and understanding previously inaccessible or difficult ideas and topics. As a result of the recent worldwide lockdown caused by the coronavirus epidemic, educational and eLearning-related YouTube channels have acquired a significant number of followers. It is because students worldwide attend lessons from home.

YouTube is only one of many online learning resources to make getting a college degree more straightforward and accessible. YouTube is the world’s biggest video-sharing website and has 2 billion active users. Every minute, 500 hours worth of video material is posted to YouTube. It demonstrates that video material is viral and draws in more people than any other content.

Because of this, you might profit much from using YouTube as a terrific tool in your online study. It has the potential to play a big part in enhancing the efficacy and depth of the learning process. When students have a positive and memorable time studying online, their retention and participation rates rise, leading to a more successful course overall.

The utilization of YouTube videos in the classroom may be beneficial for instructors and entertaining for students. Students are more interested in exciting activities, and they’re more likely to pay attention when they watch videos instead of having read walls of text in books and notes. We have outlined several advantages of utilizing YouTube as a resource for learning materials in your online education, and we want you to be aware of these advantages.

  • Reduces the Expenses of Online Education

The production cost of an instructional film is often far lower than that of a Hollywood-worthy video. If you are a student or an instructor looking to reduce the cost of online education, YouTube may be a beneficial resource. Even the camera on your smartphone may help generate instructional movies, allowing you to avoid a significant amount of money while fulfilling your role as an instructor.

Once they are finished, you can post them on your YouTube channel at no additional cost. On the other hand, you may give your instructional track an immediate boost by purchasing subscribers on YouTube. Your channel’s videos may be effortlessly included in any online education platform, assisting students in gaining knowledge efficiently and costlessly.

On the other side, students have unrestricted access to all YouTube videos at any time and from any location. As a consequence of this, YouTube videos have the potential to play an essential part in lowering the total expenses of online education and in assisting students in learning even if they do not have sufficient funds.

advantages of youtube essay

  • YouTube Is a Wealth of Educational Resources Available to Users

Suppose a video from YouTube cannot be included in a learning management system (LMS) or an online class. In that case, instructors may connect students to other visual learning resources. Asking your students to search YouTube to uncover instructional films pertinent to their needs is another way to encourage students to engage in self-directed learning.

Students like watching videos on YouTube, which not only assists them in understanding challenging ideas but also improves their listening and punctuation abilities. On the other hand, instructors may devote more of their attention to the student’s capacity for learning rather than spending additional time explaining complicated ideas and subjects.

  • Microlearning and mobile technology

Using YouTube as part of your online education may also provide you with several advantages in the areas of mobile and microlearning. Because YouTube allows users to publish movies of any length, the best way to ensure that students get the assistance they need to have an easier time studying is to upload instructional films that are no more than ten minutes long.

Students who have trouble focusing on one thing for an extended period might also benefit from this online education. In addition, videos uploaded to YouTube may be viewable on various mobile devices, including computers, smartphones, and tablets. YouTube videos may be seen flawlessly on screens of any size, which does not negatively impact the video’s quality or cause the content to be misrepresented.

  • Providing Assistance with the Admissions Process as well as Other Procedures

YouTube, one of the most popular search engines on the internet, offers a wide range of instructional advantages to teachers, parents, and students of all ages and grade levels. It doesn’t matter whether you’re searching for an engaging “Crash Course” on the United States Constitution or a film to help your pupils comprehend the carbon life cycle; YouTube’s instructional material may assist in implementing any curriculum.

YouTube has more instructional videos than the LC. Because of COVID-19, our present educational system has transformed into a remote setting. As a result of this change, teachers find it challenging to deliver high-quality, exciting coursework, and many families are being forced to take on the extra responsibility of acting as their child’s teacher.

advantages of youtube essay

  • To get access to free and high-quality lecture material

Making the switch to studying via remote means is already a lot of effort. When you already have access to hundreds of films, you don’t need to make things more complicated by producing all of your material.AsapSCIENCE, BBC Teach, TEDx Talks, and Khan Academy are excellent information sources.

  • To facilitate the sharing of the work of students

Showcase the fantastic work of your kids. Create projects for your students to complete in which they will create instructional films on one of the subjects covered in your lesson plan. Students will be able to interact with one another while learning from the solutions their peers devise.

  • To make your material helpful with transcription

Due to the high manufacturing cost, printed products such as texts, worksheets, or other printed materials are often outdated. YouTube videos, on the other hand, by their very nature, are current and relevant from a cultural standpoint. If it does not happen, then they will not be successful. Your pupils will have a much easier time understanding the content when it is presented to them in the setting of the world as it is now if you use movies in their education.

Because people take in information in a variety of formats, including a transcript from a reliable source such as Happy Scribe’s youtube transcription’s software provides viewers with an additional means of processing the information presented in your video. Additionally, having a transcript makes it much simpler to analyze the video for certain terms or themes.

  • To reinforce the material

Learners who receive knowledge from several sources increase the likelihood that the information will “click” for them more quickly. Using YouTube videos in conjunction with various other modes of instruction, such as lectures, texts, or classroom discussions, will increase overall understanding and, consequently, grades.

advantages of youtube essay

  • To encourage participation from all forms of students

Gen Z members are more visual learners than members of any previous generation. As a result of having grown up with access to many forms of technology, including personal computers, television, and video games, among other things, utilizing technology to study them naturally. In addition, YouTube videos are well-suited for auditory learners, and teachers may include kinesthetic learning by having students engage in physical activities while viewing videos.

  • To display laboratories and experiments

In many STEM classrooms, teachers are having trouble providing their pupils with the same kind of hands-on experience that used to be accessible in person. YouTube allows teachers to fully demonstrate the whole experiment, from the beginning to the end, in a manner that is more interesting to students than looking at photos in a textbook.

  • To reward pupils

The bottom line is that viewing a video is entertaining! 59% of students say that viewing videos on YouTube is their preferred method of education; this is greater than either participating in live group activities or reading from paper books.

YouTube is a fantastic resource that should be useful in every classroom for various reasons, including the opportunity it provides for students to express their creativity and the ability to understand complex subjects better. Embrace the potential that our increasingly digital and disconnected society presents in the form of instructional technologies such as YouTube.

Conclusion:

There are many different ways that educational institutions may use the video material to facilitate online learning and make it more accessible to distant students. One of them is using video material to help students through admissions procedures.

Students go through enrolling in classes and gaining admission without ever having to set foot inside the institution by seeing a series of short yet informative films. In addition to helping prospective students feel enthused about the institution they will soon join, providing extra information through YouTube videos about the classes they will be taking and the places on campus they will be attending helps them get the necessary knowledge.

You may increase your visibility on YouTube and draw in more users by purchasing YouTube subscribers from reputable boosting service providers. It will allow your video to be seen by more people. If you work for a school or other educational organization, this might benefit you.

Positive and negative effects of YouTube

advantages of youtube essay

The impact of YouTube on society is undeniable, but is it actually good for society?

Availability and popularity of content aside, there are many great things about YouTube. But like all that’s good and great, there are some aspects - in a perfect world - you’d wish were tightened up a bit.

I should be more clear. This isn’t a blog about the pros and cons of YouTube, which of its features are good and which are bad, or even the best educational YouTube channels for kids . This is more about the effects, or outcomes of the video sharing behemoth.

And, while I was going to simply lay out all of the positive effects and then follow with a list of the negative, I found you can take every positive effect and counter it with a negative.

Especially when it comes to kids accessing the site, there are many concerned about the negative effects of YouTube on youth. Meanwhile, it’s an essential part of classrooms - both virtual and in-person- around the world, and more and more are finding it’s a legitimate way for kids to make money from home .

So, each point will be presented by looking at both sides of the coin. The way you interpret each depends on the lens you’re looking through...and I’ll leave such interpretation to you.

YouTube makes us smarter.

Like I said, there is a video for everything. Need to fix your toilet? You can learn how to do so in a matter of minutes. Digital marketing? Yeah! How to floss? Yes. How to floss your teeth? Gross, but probably.

I could literally go on and on.

For kids, this can mean help with homework, learning how to play an instrument, and how-to’s on everything from DIY projects to making Roblox parkour obby tutorials .

The bottom line is: if you have a curiosity, you can satisfy it immediately with YouTube. I mean, you may have gone your whole life not knowing how to replace your toilet’s fill valve, or learning to do so would have been a little more difficult had you not been able to easily pull up a video on your phone of someone showing you how to do it.

But we can also get misinformed with YouTube, and not even know it.

Now, just because a video exists doesn’t make it truth, right? It also doesn’t make the person in the video doing the teaching an expert. And it certainly doesn’t ensure you’ll fully grasp what is being conveyed.

This is a sticking point where many stop and ask themselves … “is YouTube bad for kids?” It’s a fair question and a valid concern. So much information is out there, and it’s not all high-quality or appropriate. The key lies in parental guidance and education; learning to navigate the internet safely is a critical skill in this day and age.

I was semi-joking earlier with the toilet example, but misinformation is something to keep in mind with YouTube. Unlike a TV show or movie that goes through an entire professional approval and production process to make it to the screen, a YouTube video can basically be put up by anyone over the age of 13 without any sort of vetting.

That said, policing and gatekeeping every single video that was going to be uploaded (beyond ensuring it’s not offensive or harmful in nature) would take away from a big part of what makes YouTube such a force. It’s up to the user to practice good judgement when consuming content.

Watching YouTube saves you money.

If you’re a believer that YouTube is a great teacher, and you’ve actually learned a thing or two from it, you’ve probably saved some money in doing so as well—or could have saved money had you consulted a video or two.

Real life example from the last couple of months:

My car windshield developed a pretty healthy crack that originated from a rock chip. Convinced that a footlong crack couldn’t be repaired and would require the entire windshield to be replaced, I checked YouTube first, just in case.

Turns out it could in fact be repaired!

I ended up spending $130 for the repair where the lowest windshield replacement quote I received was $600.

Sure, I could have arrived at the same conclusion with a Google search, but I wouldn’t have been convinced the crack I was researching was as bad as mine was, etc.

But watching YouTube costs you money.

For this one, I could easily go back down the toilet path, and that attempting to fix your toilet by watching a YouTube video could leave you underwater in more ways than one...but there is another angle here.

YouTube is an advertising platform dressed in a video sharing service’s clothing, just as your favorite show is being produced as a means to deliver ads to you. So, even if you don’t stick around to watch the ad clip you can skip in 3, 2, 1, the main video you’re watching could contain methods like product placement, or an advertising link that pops up during the video.

Now, does the presence of advertising make YouTube “bad?” Of course not. It needs to survive just like any other business. Some people have more issues with advertisements than others, but I believe it’s a little unfair to expect a business to operate without attempting to generate revenue.

YouTube leads to less boredom.

With YouTube on your mobile device, you can watch pretty much anytime and anywhere such devices are allowed. Waiting in the DMV? On an airplane? These experiences may have been guaranteed boredom in the past, but YouTube allows for easy entertainment on the go.

(On the other hand, if YouTube didn’t exist, would people not have the means to find entertainment in these instances? I don’t think much would change, do you? Thus, is this really a positive effect of YouTube , or can it be argued that it's more of a positive effect of having a mobile device?)

But people are spending more time glued to screens.

Those of us who believe that too much "screen time" is in fact a negative might partly blame apps like YouTube.

The point here is that yes, people are probably spending more time with their screens these days, and thus less time enjoying everything else this world has to offer.

(On the other hand, if YouTube didn’t exist, would people not be glued to their screens? I don’t think much would change, do you? Thus, is this really a negative effect of YouTube , or can it can be argued that it's more of a negative effect of having a mobile device?)

YouTube has led to the creation of many jobs and income.

YouTube began as a platform where you could upload spontaneous videos you captured by being in the right place at the right time. Now, people are dedicating their lives to creating content specifically for uploading.  All around the world, kids have created multi-million dollar YouTube presences .

Thus, becoming a YouTube personality is a full-time job for many, and a part-time gig allowing for additional streams of income for others.

Beyond that, these YouTube stars require specific equipment to be invented and sold to them in order to produce videos to the best of their ability.

Bottom line: This “ creative economy ” has opened a world of opportunity for many to earn an income, both in front of and behind the camera.

But YouTube is also a productivity killer.

How do you know I don’t have YouTube on a continuous play right now as I type up this blog? You don’t know (but I don’t, I promise).

My point here is, while YouTube is creating jobs, it might also be taking away from the efficiency of many others in the office or at home that are working other, non-YouTube related occupations.

Again, though, it seems that many of these “negatives” would still prominently exist without YouTube. Netflix and other streaming services, mobile games, apps, and more can all be said to contribute to a loss of productivity.

YouTube is inspiring

From TED Talks to Q & A with politicians, celebrities, and activists, the world’s 2nd most popular social media platform has countless hours of inspirational content.

Adults can connect with like minded people and get ideas for starting grassroots movements. Kids can get inspired by their favorite influencers to learn how to create a YouTube channel of their very own, or simply try their hand at video editing .

There are plenty of figures on the site who regularly use YouTube for good, even if it’s just to brighten someone’s day with a silly cat video. It’s a more or less unprecedented means of getting your voice out there, and the courage and skills necessary to do that can have a positive impact on kids grown-ups alike.

Not all content creators set a great example

It would be a wonderful thing if all content on YouTube, and the internet at large for that matter, was created exclusively by trustworthy, respectable people with good intentions, but that simply isn’t the case.

Like misinformation, there isn’t a perfect means of vetting the organizations and individuals on YouTube, no matter how many followers they have. Popularity is not necessarily an indicator of quality, and that’s something that can mislead people. And while YouTube has guidelines about disclosing sponsored content, the lines can definitely be blurred by less reputable sources.

Great, so everything is a wash?

Well, kind of! First, let's recap:

Positive effects of YouTube:

  • Educates and teaches
  • Saves money
  • Provides entertainment
  • Creates jobs
  • Inspires learning and positive change

Negative effects of YouTube:

  • Increases expenses
  • Increases screen time
  • Kills productivity
  • Not all content is advocates for good

As you can see, for every potential positive, there could be a related negative, and vice versa.

I didn’t intend for that to be the point of this blog post, but the more you look at it, it’s hard to take a concrete stance either way.

And that’s the beauty of opinions...we can each have one, and the person next to us could completely disagree. It’s an argument that will never end.

So, what can we do? As parents, if you think there are negative effects of YouTube, address them.

We can utilize parental controls to ensure only the content we want kids to see is being viewed. We can utilize apps to limit their screen time, and more.

We can also utilize our own eyes to be watchful of what is being consumed, and use our voices to have conversations when things need to be roped in. We must remain vigilant.

But just like video games and other technologies that parents might interpret as time wasters, these platforms offer more than “sit back and kick it” outlets, and can actually inspire creativity and curiosity. How is a video game made? How can I learn to film, edit, and produce my own videos?

When it comes to children and technology , the answer isn’t to keep them from it—it’s to keep them on the right side of it, instilling rules and balance, and encouraging them to evolve from simply consumers to creators.

YouTube can help boost your SEO by creating backlinks. These backlinks can be created when adding your website link onto your profile page and/or within the descriptions of each video you post on your channel. advantages of youtube essay

Social Media: YouTube essay

Today, social media play an increasingly more important role in the life of society because users spend a lot of time online and they view social media as an important source of information about issues which users are concerned with. YouTube, being one of the mainstream social media, allows users to share their videos online, create their channels and, thus, create their virtual communities united by common interests. YouTube also becomes a tool of the promotion of individuals and ideas because users can use the social media to promote themselves and their ideas. In such a situation, the distinct feature of YouTube is its performativity because users publishing their videos on YouTube focus on their performativity. Otherwise, they will not attract many users and become virtually useless for other users of YouTube but the authors of those videos (Lombe & Ssewamala 39). Hence, the performativity is not only the distinct feature of YouTube but also an essential condition of success of videos published on YouTube, whereas the public grows too concerned with the performativity that often leads to the failure of the audience to notice really significant and important issues, while perfomrability become prior to the cultural and social value of videos and messages published on YouTube. In such a way, the performativity of YouTube has a dubious effect, since, on the one hand, YouTube performativity makes it attractive and powerful social media allowing sharing visual data by users worldwide, while, on the other hand, YouTube performativity has a de structive impact on the existing legal and socio-cultural or ethical norms because often data published on YouTube violate basic rights, such as privacy or copyright, and offend existing ethical norms.

At the same time, social media became generators of the mainstream culture and new trends. In this regard, it is worth mentioning the fact that the development of social media, like YouTube, opens new opportunities for the development of virtual social communities united by their common interests. Users spend more and more time online developing their virtual social relations online. Social media become an important part of their life and virtual communities created with the help of and within social media play an important part in the development of socio-cultural norms and standards that affect the development of basic ethical and cultural norms of people and influence their lifestyle substantially.

YouTube has become a highly influential media which is extremely popular among users worldwide. Today, YouTube has millions or even billions of users worldwide. This is one of the most popular social media along with FaceBook, Twitter and others. The popularity of YouTube is closely intertwined with the publishing opportunity offered by the social media because users can publish their videos both documentary and featured ones. In such a way, users get ample opportunities to share their videos instantly. At the same time, the distinct feature of YouTube is its perfomrability because it is the performativity of videos that attracts users and the more performable a video is the more users will watch it, the more popular it becomes.

Even though YouTube focuses on sharing videos mainly, the social media still opens wide opportunities for users to share their creative ideas and make them performable. Users may be driven by different concerns, while publishing their videos and sharing information with others. Some of them may be willing to publishing some interesting facts recorded by them in the real world, while others manifest their creativity with the help of YouTube.

YouTube allows watching diverse videos and channels which may vary in their content. However, the popularity of videos determines their availability to the audience that influences the perception of information by the audience. For instance, the video that has the highest number of views becomes more and more popular and becomes mainstream, even though in its essence the video may have little cultural value or poor messages (Warr 291). In fact, the point is to make videos performable. The overwhelming majority of users publishing their videos on YouTube are concerned with the popularity of their videos than their content. Such a competition encourages users to focus on performativity of their videos above all.

What makes YouTube really popular and mainstream social media is its performativity because the audience receive what it wants and expects from the media, the performance, the show and entertainment with the possibility of the further communication and even interaction with other users of YouTube. For instance, users publishing the video on YouTube may expect the positive feedback from other users. If they receive a negative feedback, they may become interested in creating a new video to match the public interests. In such a way, videos become more and more performable to gain the positive feedback from the part of other users watching them on YouTube.

However, often the quantity of views determines the popularity of videos in YouTube and users erroneously associate the quality of the video with the number of views. In other words, they may believe that if the video has a large number of views, than it is good and mainstream.

Furthermore, users can leave comments after the video that also contributes to the formation of specific ideas because users may conduct disputes as they leave their comments.

Furthermore, videos published on YouTube may encourage users to publish their video responses that contribute to the further attraction of the users’ attention to the issue that has become the subject of controversy or dispute between users.

The popularity of YouTube is, to a significant extent, determined by the interest of the audience in visual information. In fact, it is not the interest proper. To put it more precisely, users prefer YouTube because this social media provides them with visual messages which are preferable for the public than print messages for instance (Warr 290). As people perceive the information about the surrounding world with the help of vision, they naturally choose YouTube in place of other social media because they have an opportunity to receive visual information that facilitates their perception of messages conveyed via YouTube.

At the same time, it is necessary to take the commercial background and opportunities offered by YouTube to its users. For instance, users can benefit from the cooperation with advertisers but they need to make their videos and channels popular to attract more advertisers. In such a way, YouTube offers business opportunities for users that stimulates the development of diverse channels to meet current demands of the public or create new ones.

An analysis of videos suggested by the site’s recommendation engine finds that users are directed toward progressively longer and more popular content

  • Methodology

Both Traditional and Digital Tools Help Scientists Stay Up-to-Date

A majority of Americans across a wide range of demographic groups are YouTube adopters, with younger Americans standing out as especially avid users of the site.

One-in-five YouTube users say it is very important for helping them understand things that are happening in the world

A new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults finds that these users are turning to YouTube for much more than entertainment. Roughly half of YouTube users say the platform is very important for helping them figure out how to do things they’ve never done before. That works out to 35% of all U.S. adults, once both users and non-users of the site are accounted for. And around one-in-five YouTube users (representing 13% of the total adult population) say it is very important for helping them understand events that are happening in the world.

The findings also highlight YouTube’s key role in providing content for children. Fully 81% of all parents with children age 11 or younger say they ever let their child watch videos on YouTube. And 34% of parents say their child watches content on YouTube regularly. It should be noted that YouTube explicitly states that the platform is not intended for children younger than 13, and that the site provides a YouTube Kids option for children that has enhanced parental controls.

But even as many users are turning to content on YouTube to help them understand the world and learn new things, large shares say they encounter negative experiences with content on the platform. Around two-thirds of users (64%) say they at least sometimes encounter videos that seem obviously false or untrue while using the site, while 60% at least sometimes encounter videos that show people engaging in dangerous or troubling behavior. And among parents who let their young child watch content on the site, 61% say they have encountered content there that they felt was unsuitable for children.

The survey also illustrates the prominent role the site’s recommendations play in its users’ consumption habits. These “up next” videos are selected by the site’s algorithm and appear alongside or below the video viewers are currently watching. Depending on a user’s individual settings, these videos may play automatically once the video they are watching has finished. Some 81% of YouTube users say they at least occasionally watch the videos suggested by the platform’s recommendation algorithm, including 15% who say they do this regularly, according to the survey.

Although the site’s recommendations drive a significant share of its users’ time on the site, the inner workings of the algorithm itself are largely opaque. To further understand the nature of the video recommendations on YouTube, the Center conducted a companion analysis of the videos suggested by the site’s recommendation algorithm. To do this, we conducted more than 170,000 “random walks” through the videos recommended to viewers of popular YouTube channels using the site’s public application programming interface (API) over a six-week period in summer 2018.

These random walks worked by:

1) Selecting a video at random from a custom list of more than 14,000 popular English-language YouTube channels (defined as those with at least 250,000 subscribers), based on one of four selection criteria also chosen at random.

2) Selecting one of the five recommended videos listed in the YouTube API for that video.

3) Repeating the above step until a total of five videos – the initial starting video plus four subsequent recommendations – had been collected.

All told, these 174,117 random walks resulted in 696,468 total encounters with 346,086 unique recommended videos. For more detail on how this analysis was conducted, see the Methodology at the end of this report.

A key finding of this analysis is that the YouTube recommendation system encourages users to watch progressively longer and more popular content. The videos selected in the first step of these random walks averaged 9 minutes, 31 seconds in length. The first recommended video tied to this initial choice ran, on average, nearly three minutes longer. By the fifth and final step in these walks, the site recommended videos that averaged nearly 15 minutes in length.

YouTube recommendations point users to progressively longer content

The recommendation engine similarly recommends ever-more-popular videos. The initial starting videos in these random walks averaged just over 8 million views. But the first videos recommended by the site average nearly 30 million views. And by the final step, these videos have an average of more than 40 million views.

This study of YouTube’s recommendation algorithm also reinforces the survey findings about the prominence of children’s content on YouTube. All told, 134 unique videos were recommended more than 100 times during this analysis. And of the 50 individual videos that were encountered most frequently, 11 of them – or about a fifth of the most-recommended videos – were determined by researchers to be oriented toward children, based on their content. Indeed, an animated video for children was the single most recommended video in this analysis.

The findings in this report are based on two different sources. The insights about YouTube users’ attitudes and experiences on the platform are taken from a nationally representative survey of 4,594 U.S. adults conducted May 29-June 11, 2018. The findings about YouTube recommendations are drawn from an analysis of more than 170,000 “random walks” through the platform’s video recommendations for videos posted by high-subscriber YouTube channels, performed July 18-Aug. 29, 2018, using the site’s public API.

The views and experiences of YouTube users

Although YouTube was not explicitly developed as a news platform, substantial shares of its users get news content from the site and use it to make sense of the world around them. A recent study by the Center found that the share of YouTube users who get news or news headlines there nearly doubled between 2013 (20%) and 2018 (38%). And this new survey finds that around half (53%) of YouTube users say the site is at least somewhat important for helping them understand things that are happening in the world – with 19% saying it is very important to them for this reason.

One-in-five YouTube users say it is very important for helping them understand things that are happening in the world

These users are also turning to YouTube for reasons other than news. Around seven-in-ten (68%) say the site is important simply for helping them pass the time (with 28% saying it is very important to them for this reason). Around half (54%) say it is important for helping them make purchasing decisions. Younger adults are especially likely to say that YouTube is important to them for passing the time. Four-in-ten users ages 18 to 29 say the site is very important to them for this reason, but that share falls to 30% among users ages 30 to 49, 20% among users 50 to 64 and 14% among users 65 and older.

At the same time, a large share of YouTube users say the site is important for helping them figure out how to do things they haven’t done before. Fully 87% of users say the site is important for this reason, with 51% saying it is very important. And the ability to learn how to do new things is important to users from a wide range of age groups. Roughly half (53%) of users ages 18 to 29 say the site is very important to them for this reason, and that view is shared by 41% of users ages 65 and older.

In some cases, users’ responses to these questions show substantial variation based on how frequently they visit the site. Most notably, people who use the site regularly place an especially high level of importance on YouTube for learning about world events. Some 32% of users who visit the site several times a day – and 19% of those who visit once a day – say it is very important for helping them understand things that are happening in the world. That compares with 10% of users who visit less often.

In other cases, more- and less-frequent users of YouTube have similar views of the platform’s importance. For instance, a 56% majority of users who visit multiple times per day say the site is very important in helping them figure out how to do new things. But that view is also shared by a plurality (46%) of those who use the site less than once per day.

It is common for users to encounter troubling or problematic content on YouTube

Majority of YouTube users encounter videos that seem false/untrue, or show people doing dangerous things

Even as many YouTube users say the site plays an important role in helping them navigate various aspects of their lives, it can also be a space where they encounter troubling or problematic content. Around two-thirds of users (64%) say they at least sometimes encounter videos that seem obviously false or untrue while using the site. A similar share (60%) say they at least sometimes encounter videos that show people engaging in dangerous or troubling behavior. A minority of users also say they see videos that are abusive or demeaning toward others – and 11% say they see this type of content frequently.

For the most part, users with various demographic characteristics tend to encounter these types of videos with similar frequency – although men are somewhat more likely than women to at least sometimes encounter videos showing people engaging in dangerous or troubling behaviors (67% vs. 54%).

A sizable majority of parents of young children let their child watch videos on YouTube

Around one-third of parents of young children regularly let their child watch videos on YouTube

These survey results also highlight the prominent role that YouTube plays in the lives of parents and children. Some 81% of all parents with children age 11 or younger let their child watch videos on YouTube, with 34% indicating that they allow their child to do this regularly. 1

Additionally, the survey shows that 61% of these parents say their child has encountered content on YouTube that they felt was unsuitable for children. However, it is important to note that the survey did not ask parents whether they allowed their child to watch the standard YouTube or YouTube Kids , which is a special product with greater levels of parental control and monitoring. YouTube provides parents with a YouTube Kids Parental Guide which describes how families can use the product.

An analysis of random walks through the YouTube recommendation engine

Majority of YouTube users across a wide range of age groups watch recommended videos

Much like the Facebook News Feed , YouTube’s video recommendation system is a prominent example of algorithmic content delivery. At the 2018 CES conference, YouTube’s chief product officer said the site’s recommendation engine is responsible for more than 70% of users’ time spent watching videos on the platform. These sorts of recommendation systems seek to draw viewers to content that is more engaging to them, potentially keeping them on the site for longer periods of time. But researchers such as Zeynep Tufekci, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina’s School of Information and Library Science, have argued that these systems can push viewers toward extreme content that they might not have discovered otherwise.

This survey finds that roughly eight-in-ten YouTube users (81%) say they watch recommended videos – with 15% saying they watch these videos regularly. And younger users are especially likely to regularly follow the algorithm’s recommendations. Some 22% of YouTube users ages 18 to 29 say they regularly watch the recommended videos suggested to them, compared with around one-in-ten users ages 50 and older.

To more deeply understand this phenomenon, the Center supplemented these survey findings with a separate “random walks” analysis of popular YouTube channels using the YouTube public API. Over a six-week period spanning July 18-Aug. 29, 2018, the Center performed 174,117 random walks through the videos that the YouTube platform recommends to viewers of English-language channels with at least 250,000 subscribers.

How the Center conducted the 'random walks' analysis used in this report

Each random walk worked as follows:

  • First, we used the YouTube API to randomly select a channel from a list of every English-language channel with at least 250,000 subscribers that researchers could identify (14,509 channels in total).
  • Upon selecting a channel, we then randomly selected one of the top five videos for that channel as ranked by either relevance, date posted, rating or view count. The criterion used for each walk was chosen randomly prior to selecting a video.
  • After selecting the starting video, a new video was then chosen at random from the top five recommended videos for that video, as listed in the YouTube API at that time.
  • The above step would then be repeated until a total of five videos (the initial video plus four subsequent recommendations) had been collected.

All told, these 174,117 random walks resulted in 696,468 total encounters with 346,086 unique recommended videos. We will discuss in more detail below that these figures are different because some videos were recommended more than once over the study period. Unless explicitly noted, all findings in this report include only those videos recommended by the site’s recommendation algorithm and not the initial starting videos.

Like other content delivery algorithms, the YouTube recommendation engine attempts to customize its suggestions based on an individual user’s prior activity and browsing behavior. Thus, different users watching the same video might be served different recommendations based on the system’s calculations of their interests. To maintain a consistent methodology built on the likely experiences of a baseline viewer of these popular channels, this analysis utilizes the base recommendations from the YouTube API. As such, these findings represent the recommendations a viewer of these channels might expect to see if they were viewing YouTube anonymously, and/or without being logged into their account.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

Certain popular videos were recommended repeatedly in this analysis

28% of the unique videos in this dataset were recommended multiple times over the study period. A majority of the recommended videos in this dataset were recommended just a single time. But 98,508 videos (or 28% of the total) were recommended more than once over the study period, suggesting that the recommendation algorithm points viewers to a consistent set of videos with some regularity. In fact, a small number of these videos (134 in total) were recommended more than 100 times.

The bulk of the videos recommended during these random walks were quite popular – 64% of the recommendations went to videos that had more than 1 million views at the time. At the same time, 5% of the recommendations went to videos that had fewer than 50,000 views when they were recommended. 2

YouTube recommendations point to progressively longer videos

YouTube tends to recommend progressively longer and more popular content to users. This analysis illustrates how YouTube’s recommendation engine encourages users to engage with progressively longer content. The videos encountered in the first step of these random walks (that is, the initial starting videos chosen at random) collectively averaged 9 minutes and 31 seconds in length. But the first videos selected by the recommendation engine were nearly three minutes longer on average. Average video length then progressively increased for each subsequent recommendation. By the fifth and final step in these walks, these videos were on average nearly 15 minutes long.

This analysis also illustrates how the site’s recommendation engine steers users toward progressively more popular content as measured by view counts. Collectively, the starting videos in this analysis had an average of just over 8 million views. But the first videos recommended by the algorithm were much more popular, with nearly 30 million views on average. And videos in the final step in these walks had an average of more than 40 million views.

Although the magnitude of the effect is slightly different in each case, this general relationship held true regardless of whether the initial video was chosen based on date posted, view count, relevance or user rating. Even when starting on one of a channel’s five most recent videos (which average fewer than 2 million views) the recommendation algorithm consistently suggested more popular videos. By the fourth recommendation on walks starting from a channel’s most recent videos, viewers were recommended videos with an average of nearly 33 million views.

Music videos, TV competitions and children’s content made up a large share of the 50 most-recommended videos in this analysis

A detailed content analysis of the more than 340,000 unique recommended videos in this dataset is beyond the scope of this study. Therefore, the analysis that follows focuses on the 50 individual videos recommended most frequently over the course of these six weeks. A full list of these 50 videos and a brief description can be found in Appendix A of this report.

Bulk of the 50 most-recommended videos in this analysis were music videos, TV competitions, children's content or 'life hacks'

Four specific types of content made up a sizable majority of the 50 most-encountered videos in this analysis. Fourteen of these videos were music videos by major commercial artists, typically the “official” video posted to the channel of the artist who created the work. Eleven were compilation videos showing highlights or surprising moments from televised competition shows. Titles like “Top 10 Most UNFORGETTABLE Singing Auditions ALL TIME” and “UNBELIEVABLE! Top 10 Shocking Blind Auditions the Voice 2018” are representative of this genre.

In keeping with the large share of parents who let their children watch videos on YouTube, a substantial share of these videos (11 in total) were oriented toward small children. In fact, the single video in this dataset with the largest number of total recommendations over the study period (615) was an animated song compilation titled “Bath Song | + More Nursery Rhymes & Kids Songs.”

These frequently recommended children’s videos also highlight the ways in which children’s content on YouTube can differ from more traditional programming for young people. Numerous researchers have noted that a great deal of children’s content on YouTube consists of simple, repetitive animated videos with modest production values and seemingly random titles designed specifically to appeal to the site’s search function and automated recommendation system. This list of top videos contained several examples of this genre of children’s programming, including titles such as:

  • “Learn Colors with Spiderman 3D w Trucks Cars Surprise Toys Play Doh for Children” (393 recommendations)
  • “Learn Shapes with Police Truck – Rectangle Tyres Assemby – Cartoon Animation for Children” (286)
  • “Kinetic Sand Ice Cream Making Learn Fruits with Toys Kinetic Sand Videos for Kids” (230)

Two of the children’s videos in the top 50 were so-called “ surprise egg ” toy-opening videos titled “GIANT Lightning McQueen Egg Surprise with 100+ Disney Cars Toys” and “HUGE EGGS Surprise Toys Challenge with Inflatable water slide.”

In some cases, it appears that the titles of these videos may also change over time, suggesting attempts at search optimization that are intended to attract more recommendations or views. For instance, one of the most-recommended children’s videos during the study period was titled “Learn Colors with Spiderman 3D w Trucks Cars Surprise Toys Play Doh for Children.” But following the data collection, that video was renamed to “Learn Colors with Spiderman w King Kong 3D Animals Play Fun Games for Kids | Cartoon for Children.” Although it is not outwardly apparent why this change was made, it may be that the creators were seeking to take advantage of certain popular search terms or elements of the recommendation algorithm that potentially give extra weight to certain subjects.

The final prominent type of video on this list (with seven videos in total) was so-called “life hack” videos. Nearly all these videos were compilations of short, thematically similar snippets and contain little to no human narration. They also highlighted the ways in which certain channels or producers can dominate the recommendation system: All seven were created by and posted to the same branded video channel.

All told, 43 of the 50 videos in this list were in one of the four categories listed above.

These 50 videos were typically already very popular at the time they were first recommended in this analysis, with an average of 456 million views. Forty-eight of them had at least 1 million views on their first encounter, and seven had more than 1 billion views. At the same time, one video in the top 50 (the children’s video titled “Oddbods Overload | All NEW Episodes | __LIVE | Funny Cartoons For Kids by Oddbods & Friends”) had just over 34,000 views when it was first recommended.

But regardless of their initial popularity, these videos collectively increased their view counts substantially (by an average of 38.5 million views) between the first and last time they were encountered. Indeed, the children’s video noted above had nearly 30 million views by the final time it was recommended. However, this analysis cannot say conclusively whether this was due to the self-perpetuating nature of the recommendation engine itself, or simply the fact that popular content tended to become more popular over time.

  • When asked how often they let their child watch YouTube videos, 8% of respondents indicated that they do not have any children age 11 or younger. The results reported here have been recalculated to exclude these respondents. ↩
  • The figures in this paragraph are based on all encounters with a recommended video over the course of the analysis, not just unique videos. ↩

Additionally, labour migration can strain social services and infrastructure in receiving countries, leading to concerns about overcrowding, pressure on healthcare and education systems, and cultural tensions. Another advantage of labour migration is its role in promoting cultural exchange and diversity. Migrants bring with them their traditions, languages, and customs, enriching the cultural fabric of their host communities. This diversity can foster innovation, creativity, and cross-cultural understanding, ultimately contributing to social cohesion and tolerance. Furthermore, labour migration can facilitate knowledge transfer and skill exchange, as migrants bring new perspectives and expertise to their workplaces, benefiting both employers and local workers. However, labour migration also poses challenges related to social integration and cohesion. Migrants may face difficulties assimilating into their host societies due to language barriers, cultural differences, and discrimination. This can lead to social isolation, marginalization, and tensions between migrant communities and the native population. Therefore, efforts to promote inclusive policies, support social integration initiatives, and combat xenophobia are crucial in harnessing the potential benefits of labour migration while mitigating its negative consequences. In conclusion, labour migration is a complex phenomenon with both advantages and disadvantages. While it can stimulate economic growth, alleviate labor shortages, and foster cultural exchange, it also presents challenges such as exploitation, social tensions, and integration issues. By addressing these challenges through comprehensive policies and initiatives, countries can maximize the benefits of labour migration while minimizing its negative impacts, ensuring a more equitable and sustainable future for all....

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Studying MBBS

Studying MBBS, or Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, is a dream for many aspiring medical professionals. This rigorous program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to become doctors and save lives. However, like any other field of study, pursuing an MBBS degree comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. One of the main advantages of studying MBBS is the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives. As a doctor, you have the ability to diagnose and treat illnesses, perform life-saving surgeries, and improve the overall health and well-being of your patients. This sense of purpose and fulfillment is a major motivator for many students who choose to pursue a career in medicine. Another advantage of studying MBBS is the potential for a lucrative career. Doctors are among the highest-paid professionals in the world, and the demand for qualified medical professionals is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. This means that studying MBBS can lead to a stable and financially rewarding career path. On the other hand, studying MBBS also comes with its own set of challenges and disadvantages. One of the main disadvantages is the long and demanding nature of the program. Medical school is known for its rigorous curriculum, long hours of study and clinical rotations, and high levels of stress. This can take a toll on students' mental and physical health, leading to burnout and exhaustion. Another disadvantage of studying MBBS is the high cost of tuition and other expenses. Medical school is notoriously expensive, and many students graduate with significant student loan debt. This financial burden can be a major source of stress for new doctors, especially as they begin their careers and work to establish themselves in the field. In conclusion, studying MBBS offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives and pursue a financially rewarding career. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges, including a demanding curriculum, high levels of stress, and significant financial costs. Ultimately, the decision to pursue an MBBS degree should be made carefully, weighing the advantages and disadvantages to determine if it is the right path for you....

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Widi

WiDi, or Wireless Display, is a technology that allows users to wirelessly stream audio and video content from their devices to a compatible display, such as a TV or monitor. This technology has gained popularity due to its convenience and versatility, but it also comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. One of the primary advantages of WiDi is its wireless nature, which eliminates the need for cumbersome cables and connectors. This makes it easy for users to connect their devices to displays without having to worry about cable clutter or compatibility issues. Additionally, WiDi allows for greater mobility, as users can move around freely while streaming content without being tethered to a physical connection. Another advantage of WiDi is its versatility. It supports a wide range of devices, including laptops, tablets, and smartphones, making it accessible to a broad user base. This versatility extends to the types of content that can be streamed, from videos and presentations to games and web browsing. WiDi also supports high-definition video and audio, ensuring a high-quality viewing and listening experience. Furthermore, WiDi offers convenience in collaborative settings, such as meetings or presentations. With WiDi, multiple users can easily share their screens and content on a larger display, fostering collaboration and communication. This can be particularly useful in professional settings where participants need to share visual information or data in real-time. However, despite its advantages, WiDi also has its disadvantages. One notable disadvantage is its dependency on compatible hardware and software. Users must ensure that both their devices and displays support WiDi, which may require additional investment or upgrades. Moreover, WiDi performance can be affected by factors such as distance, interference, and network congestion, leading to potential reliability issues. Another disadvantage of WiDi is its potential security risks. Since WiDi relies on wireless communication, it may be vulnerable to interception or unauthorized access. This could pose a risk to sensitive information or content being transmitted, especially in corporate or academic environments where data security is paramount. Users must take precautions such as enabling encryption and using secure networks to mitigate these risks. In conclusion, WiDi offers numerous advantages, including wireless connectivity, versatility, and convenience, making it a popular choice for streaming content to displays. However, it also has its disadvantages, such as dependency on compatible hardware, reliability issues, and security risks. Overall, users should weigh these factors carefully when considering whether to adopt WiDi technology....

Benefits of YouTube in education | LanSchool helps customize YouTube use

November 30, 2022

YouTube has become many students’ primary source of entertainment, information, and connection with the world. Around 69 percent of kids age 13-18 say they watch YouTube every day. And with 500 hours of video uploaded every minute, there’s always plenty of new content to make them return regularly.

Some of that content is educational, and even purpose-built for teachers to use in the classroom. But YouTube also houses a great deal of content that’s inappropriate for students, leading many school IT teams to block the site entirely.

These competing priorities can lead educators to wonder — does YouTube have a place in the classroom? And if so, how can teachers unlock the benefits of YouTube while also shielding students from its negative effects?

YouTube is a powerful tool

There are a number of reasons YouTube has become the powerhouse it is, and many of those translate to the classroom.

1. Supplements learning – There is a great deal of educational content available on YouTube, including entire courses. This can be invaluable for busy teachers who need supplemental resources for slow days, sick days, complex topics, or who just want to switch up their teaching style to keep students interested and engaged. Blocking YouTube on a schoolwide level removes the opportunity for teachers to lean on YouTube when it would otherwise be helpful.

2. Increases engagement  – The fact that students choose to engage with videos on a daily basis proves how enticing this format can be to young people. The combination of visuals and audio — along with YouTube’s content culture of simple, digestible messaging — makes YouTube videos a great tool for engaging students in learning. In fact, 91% of educational institutions say video increases student satisfaction.

3. Encourages creativity – One other benefit to enabling YouTube in the classroom is that it opens the door for student-led video creation. Video production is not only a viable future career choice for students but has also become a common skillset that students want and need to practice. Student videos don’t have to be slick productions — even a video journal or improvised essay response can be great uses for the format.

Common reasons teachers block YouTube

Of course, teachers wouldn’t block the use of YouTube if enabling it only brought advantages. YouTube can introduce a few hurdles to the classroom environment that teachers and IT teams will have to address with web limiting solutions. Here are a few reasons teachers block YouTube:

They want to block harmful content.

Not everything on YouTube is educational or appropriate for kids. This is the main reason schools sometimes block YouTube entirely — the convenience of avoiding harmful video content at the click of a button. Of course, a web limiting solution can enable schools or teachers to block harmful content without disabling YouTube altogether.

It can be distracting.

Teachers want to limit distractions in their classroom, and without the right tools in place, YouTube can fall into that category. Web limiting tools can enable teachers to set appropriate limits on YouTube when necessary, without having to block the entire site.

It’s difficult to verify the quality and accuracy of videos.

As educators strive to teach students about digital citizenship, one of their major focuses is ensuring students understand how to distinguish credible sources from the rest. Teachers will have to go the extra mile to determine the accuracy of the videos they’re sharing, but doing so is a good opportunity to teach students how to verify sources for themselves.

Streaming YouTube videos uses a great deal of network bandwidth.

Video streaming can hog a school’s bandwidth, slowing down digital learning for the other students. That’s why it’s important to have web limiting tools in place that enable IT teams and/or teachers to set limits on YouTube usage, such as enabling it only during certain classes or periods.

How LanSchool can help customize your YouTube use

LanSchool enables teachers to quickly customize YouTube access rules based on what they need in that moment.

Teachers can limit students’ YouTube browsing by enforcing Limit Web , which blocks the site completely until the teacher lifts the restriction. Teachers can enforce and remove restrictions with a few clicks and even set different rules for different classes. Alternatively, teachers can use LanSchool’s Push Website feature to push a specific video to students’ screens, eliminating the distraction of navigating past YouTube’s home page full of recommended videos.

YouTube can be teachers’ secret weapon for driving student engagement, creativity, and learning. Don’t miss out on one of the Internet’s best educational resources. Learn more about how LanSchool can help unleash the benefits of YouTube with a free demo .

These ‘Trash Trees’ Are Actually a Banquet for Wildlife

Three birds, called cedar waxwings, resting on a branch of a tree sprouting red berries.

By Margaret Renkl

Ms. Renkl is a contributing Opinion writer who reports from Nashville on flora, fauna, politics and culture in the American South.

Hackberries are native to Alabama, where I grew up, but I was a child born of the piney woods, and I don’t recall ever noticing a single hackberry in my youth. The trees also grow in South Carolina, where I went to graduate school, but they didn’t register with me there, either. I was a newly transplanted Tennessean before I learned about “trash trees,” as people here call them.

The common hackberry is widespread from New England across to the Dakotas and down through the Midwest and Upper South. The Southern hackberry, a species also known as the sugarberry , blankets the Southeast down through Florida and west into Texas and northeastern Mexico. The two species overlap — and sometimes self-hybridize — in Tennessee. The Nashville naturalist Joanna Brichetto, author of the new book “ This Is How a Robin Drinks: Essays on Urban Nature ,” calls Nashville “ the hackberry capital of the world .”

I don’t know if people call them trash trees in other places, but hackberries are widely disdained in the hackberry capital of the world. Their bark is a rough swath of warts. Their pocked, wrinkled, gall-infested leaves always look a little sick. In spring, their flowers drop to the ground and cover the sidewalks, and in fall their berrylike drupes do the same, without any gorgeous fall color to compensate for the mess.

One of the hackberries’ least desirable characteristics is not, strictly speaking, a feature of the trees themselves. Hackberries are targeted by the invasive Asian woolly hackberry aphid , which like all aphids excretes a sticky form of waste called honeydew. In wet summers, rain washes the honeydew away, but in dry years, the honeydew can accumulate and promote the growth of a soot-colored mold on whatever — car, sidewalk, patio furniture — happens to lie beneath the branches of a hackberry tree. “The mold is absolutely harmless,” Ms. Brichetto said when I asked her about it, “but people freak out.”

Unluckiest of all for a tree trying to survive the built human environment, hackberries have a growing habit that also freaks people out. Hackberries can grow giant horizontal branches that sprawl out across great expanses. Left unpruned, those heavy old limbs sometimes drop onto houses during storms.

By now you’re thinking, “Yeah, that’s totally a trash tree.” I spent my first years here thinking the same thing.

41 States That Don't Tax Social Security Benefits

  • States have been progressively eliminating their Social Security taxes.
  • Your combined income includes your AGI, nontaxable interest, and half of your annual Social Security benefit.
  • The federally taxable portion of your Social Security benefit is added to your regular income and taxed normally.
  • Motley Fool Issues Rare “All In” Buy Alert

Retirees in these states should be glad to avoid state taxes, but they must also consider the federal tax implications.

Some things in life are just unavoidable: traffic jams during rush hour, losing socks in the laundry, and taxes. Taxes, in particular, follow you throughout all your working years and well into retirement for many people, including your Social Security payments.

Although Social Security retirement benefits come from a social program, they're still income, so they're not exempt from taxes. The silver lining, however, is that most people won't be subjected to Social Security taxes on the state level. As of the start of September, 41 states don't tax Social Security benefits. Let's take a look at which.

A note reading "TAX TIME!" in front of a clock.

Here are the states that do not tax Social Security benefits

Along with Washington, D.C., the following 41 states do not tax Social Security benefits:

  • Massachusetts
  • Mississippi
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota

The newest member of this list is Kansas, which signed a law in June that eliminated its state tax on Social Security.

States where you may have to pay taxes on Social Security

Unfortunately, 41 states not taxing Social Security means there are still nine states remaining that do:

  • Connecticut
  • Rhode Island
  • West Virginia

The bad news is the tax. The good news is that retirees in these states may not always be subjected to taxes, as states progressively do away with it. For instance, Missouri and Nebraska both taxed Social Security benefits until Jan. 1 of this year, and West Virginia plans to phase out its tax completely by 2026.

Other states don't have definitive dates or legislation in place, but it's not farfetched to believe that they will follow suit in the future. No state Social Security tax is a great way to attract retirees looking for tax-friendly places to settle down.

You can't forget about Uncle Sam

The U.S. has taxes on the local, state, and federal levels. Unfortunately, living in a state without Social Security taxes doesn't mean you get to avoid Social Security taxes on the federal level. Uncle Sam is always out to get his share.

To calculate your tax bill, the IRS uses your "combined income," which includes the following:

  • Adjusted gross income ( AGI ) : Your total income from all non-Social Security sources (minus certain deductions if you have them).
  • Nontaxable interest : This is interest income that is not subject to federal tax. Common examples are interest earned from Treasury and municipal bonds .
  • Half of your Social Security benefits : This is 50% of your total Social Security benefits for the year.

Social Security uses your combined income to determine how much of your benefits are eligible to be taxed. Here how's it's broken down:

0% Less than $25,000 Less than $32,000
Up to 50% $25,000 to $34,000 $32,000 to $44,000
Up to 85% More than $34,000 More than $44,000

Source: Social Security Administration.

How federal Social Security taxes work

The key distinction with federal Social Security taxes is that these percentages don't tell you how much your benefits will be taxed; they just tell you how much is taxable. The portion of your benefits eligible to be taxed is added to your other income taxed at your regular income tax rate. That's a key difference that works out in retirees' favor.

Take a single person who has $10,000 of annual Social Security benefits that are subject to tax after going through the calculations above. They would not owe $10,000 in taxes. Instead, $10,000 would be added to their other income and then taxed at whatever tax bracket they're in. If they're in the 22% tax bracket, they'd owe just under $2,200.

Knowing the tax implications around your Social Security benefits is key to properly planning your retirement finances. It can help you avoid an unexpected tax bill or overestimate how much you owe (though the latter is the better option).
