ImmunoSensation2 aims to continue the success story of the existing ImmunoSensation cluster. While the emphasis so far has been on fundamental research in particular of the innate immune system, now the mechanisms of immune intelligence are to be uncovered, i.e. the question of how the body succeeds in adapting immune responses to specific situations and then remembers this in order to be optimally prepared for similar challenges in the future. The cluster's graduate school, the Bonn International Graduate School Immunosciences and Infection offers a structured, three-year doctoral program.

Over the last few decades, computer hardware has become smaller and smaller, but their technology remains more or less the same. Slowly, this development is reaching its limits. Thus, we need new technologies that satisfy our growing hunger for even more powerful hardware.
Quantum physics could be a solution.
Together with the University of Cologne and the RWTH Aachen, Bonn researchers want to work on making this new technology usable. To achieve this, quantum bits or even qubits - the quantum counterpart to our previous bits - quantum communication channels that build networks and error correction methods have to be explored from the ground up. As part of the Excellence Initiative, the Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy (BCGS) offers a doctoral program with an integrated honors program.

The ECONtribute researches the functioning of markets as well as reasons for their failure. In doing so, the cluster goes beyond traditional analyses by systematically combining model-based theoretical approaches and behavioral explanatory models while incorporating legal and political frameworks. Within the cluster, the Bonn Graduate School of Economics (BGSE) offers doctoral students a tailored structured doctoral program that includes an internationally recognized research network.

Sachin Gupte, M.D., Ph.D., has more than 25 years of education in medicine and the basic sciences. His formal training in cardiovascular medicine and vascular physiology/biology as well as his expertise in redox signaling have prepared him to generate novel hypotheses with immediate translational relevance and to motivate, instruct, and graduate students and fellows. Dr. Gupte has trained more than 29 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows who have successfully pursued careers in research, academia, the pharma industry and/or clinical practice.
- Ph.D., Physiology, Juntendo University School of Medicine
The focus of the ongoing studies in Dr. Gupte's laboratory is elucidating the role of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-derived NADPH in regulating vascular function (mechanics) and the vessel wall structure. In that context, the lab studies regulation of epigenomic (genes) and phenomic modifications of vascular smooth muscle cell by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-dependent redox signaling in a variety of in vitro and in vivo systems using state-of-the-art tools in next generation sequencing, molecular biology, and physiology. Another major project that his lab is involved in is to model the human G6PD variants in cell culture and animal models using the revolutionary CRISPR-Cas9 system of genome editing to study their role in regulation of cardiovascular function. At present, his lab is actively elucidating the cellular mechanism(s) through which glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-dependent pyridine nucleotide signaling regulate vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype in normal and disease conditions such as pulmonary hypertension (PH), metabolic syndrome-associated coronary artery disease (MS-CAD) and heart failure.
Particularly, Dr. Gupte's lab is examining the role of pyridine nucleotide signaling in regulating extracellular matrix remodeling and autophagic or apoptotic death of cardiomyocytes during the development of PAH and MS-CAD. Overall, the aim will be to study the metabolic adaptation-cardiovascular function relationship using biochemical, molecular, pharmacological and genetic approaches in novel animal models and in vitro systems that mimic human diseases and to explore novel therapies for PAH and MS-CAD.

Jeff Wilson MD, PhD, and Corinne Keet, MD, PhD, Were Awarded a $4.1 Million Multi-PI Grant to Study Food Allergens’ Potential Association with Cardiovascular Disease
September 17, 2024 by [email protected]

Jeff Wilson MD, PhD, an assistant professor in the UVA Department of Medicine Division of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, and Corinne Keet, MD, PhD, from the University of North Carolina, were awarded a $4.1 million multi-PI grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study common food allergens and their potential association with cardiovascular disease.
Food allergies that result in allergic symptoms, such as hives, swelling or anaphylaxis, are relatively uncommon in adults. However, nearly 1 in 5 adults are ‘silently’ producing IgE antibodies to food allergens without showing any overt symptoms. Recent work by Dr. Wilson and colleagues discovered a previously unrecognized link between IgE antibodies to cow’s milk and other common food allergens and an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. This association was found by measuring antibodies in banked blood samples from over 5,000 adults who were followed longitudinally for about 15 years. The strength of the relationship with cardiovascular mortality was similar to well known risk factors for heart disease, including smoking, diabetes and hypertension and was most pronounced in those who ate the foods that were targeted by their IgE antibodies. The finding suggests an opportunity for precision nutritional prevention of cardiovascular disease and was recently covered by 125 new outlets, including U.S. News and World Report.
The new NIH funding allocates $1.7 million of the award to support Dr. Wilson’s work at UVA as he takes the next critical steps to understanding the relationship between food specific IgE and atherosclerotic plaque resulting in cardiovascular disease. Dr. Wilson’s research is also supported by a UVA Strategic Investment Fund Prominence to Preeminence Award: Immunology, Imaging and Informatics for Precision ImmunoMedicine ( iPRIME) , which provides investigators an ecosystem of support personnel — from the clinical side of consenting patients and reading complex imaging to banking the high-quality samples at the bench. Over 600 samples from the Coronary Assesssment in VA (CAVA) cohort will be used to examine the relationship between IgE to food allergens and atherosclerotic plaque.
Additional UVA collaborators on this project include Coleen McNamara, MD, Todd Villines, MD, Ani Manichaikul, PhD, and Thomas Platts-Mills, MD.
