Speech writing is the art of using proper grammar and expression to convey a thought or message to a reader. Speech writing isn’t all that distinct from other types of narrative writing. However, students should be aware of certain distinct punctuation and writing style techniques. While writing the ideal speech might be challenging, sticking to the appropriate speech writing structure will ensure that you never fall short.

• Verb – A verb is a term that implies activity or ‘doing.’ These are very vital for your children’s grammar studies, as a sentence cannot be complete without a verb.
• Adjective – An adjective is a term that describes something. An adjective is frequently used before a noun to add extra information or description.
• Prepositions- A preposition is a term that expresses the location or timing of something in relation to something else.
• Conjunction- Because every language has its own set of conjunctions, English conjunctions differ from those found in other languages. They’re typically used as a connecting word between two statements, concepts, or ideas.
• Interjections- Interjections are words that are used to describe a strong emotion or a sudden feeling.

• Introduction : Greet the audience, tell them about yourself and further introduce the topic.
• Body : Present the topic in an elaborate way, explaining its key features, pros and cons, if any and the like.
• Conclusion : Summary of your speech, wrap up the topic and leave your audience with a compelling reminder to think about!

After the greetings, the Introduction has to be attention-getting. Quickly get people’s attention. The goal of a speech is to engage the audience and persuade them to think or act in your favour. The introduction must effectively include: 

• A brief preview of your topic. 
• Define the outlines of your speech. (For example, I’ll be talking about…First..Second…Third)
• Begin with a story, quote, fact, joke, or observation in the room. It shouldn’t be longer than 3-4 lines. (For Example: “Mahatma Gandhi said once…”, or “This topic reminds me of an incident/story…”)

This part is also important because that’s when your audience decides if the speech is worth their time. Keep your introduction factual, interesting, and convincing.

It is the most important part of any speech. You should provide a number of reasons and arguments to convince the audience to agree with you.

Handling objections is an important aspect of speech composition. There is no time for questions or concerns since a speech is a monologue. Any concerns that may occur during the speech will be addressed by a powerful speech. As a result, you’ll be able to respond to questions as they come in from the crowd. To make speech simpler you can prepare a flow chart of the details in a systematic way.

For example: If your speech is about waste management; distribute information and arrange it according to subparagraphs for your reference. It could include:

A Speech is a formal talk that a person delivers to his audience. It must have the capacity to hold the attention of the audience with a proper choice of words, expressions and examples. At the same time care should be taken not to deviate from the main subject. You must keep in mind that it is a speech and you need to begin the draft with addressing the audience and conclusion should be with a sentence thanking the audience.

♦ Remember:

WHO you are writing the speech for (i.e., who your audience is). WHAT your speech is going to be about (its topic) and the main points in order of importance.

♦ Note: It is important to note that the written speech should consist of small sentences having not more than 10 to 12 words in a sentence.

♦ Value Points:

• Greet your audience and introduce the topic you are speaking on.
• The introduction part of the speech is the most important part.
• It is this part which decides the impact of the speech.
• Do not give a separate title for the speech.
• Keep in mind, as already stated, the occasion of the speech and the nature of the audience.
• The introduction should not be very lengthy.
• The main topic should be taken up as quickly as possible.
• Use concrete terms and tangible examples.
• Avoid abstract phrases which are quite vague.
• Use simple and familiar language.
• The conclusion plays a very important role in the success of a speech.
• Give your own conclusion on the topic in a telling manner.

Today’s youth is faced with many problems which include a high level of competition in studies, career and jobs. This leads to accidents, sometimes even fatal ones. However, this wonder device may cause major distractions and leads to fatal accidents. Road safety researches have shown that people, especially youngsters, risk their lives by listening to music on their earphones while crossing the road. Unlike driving, which is completely under regulations and usage of earphones is strictly banned, walking with earphones is not covered by the law and thus for many of us listening to music on our mobile phones is an everyday part of life.

We all are aware that all road crossings require pedestrians to use their eyes and ears and make judgements of speed and driver intention and then decide when is it safe to cross. When you are listening to music, your attention and reflexes are majorly diverted. This distraction can interfere with your decision-making and sometimes even prove fatal. Apart from this, overexposure to radiation emitted by mobile phones may cause cancer and other serious problems. I would like to conclude my speech with the hope that my students will ensure their own safety in this regard and will spread this word of advise to others also.

Recent news of the students’ aggressiveness within the educational institution makes everyone think over it, how violent today’s students are. Why do these students have such hostile and antagonistic approach? There are so many reasons. The ‘low self-esteem’ among the students gives way to ‘fear of failure, as a result, they become frustrated and adopt a combative attitude. They want to be the centre of attraction by showing their authority, covering their deficit in other areas of skills. They don’t know how to manage their anger. These are the students classically regarded as ‘Problem Students’. They often have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and show verbal aggression as arguing, cut-down, threats, bossing, sarcasm and teasing.

On the other hand, they show physical aggression exhibiting actions like kicking, lifting, fighting, hurting others, and destroying things and objects as well. This problem can be curbed by teaching them how to manage anger through introspection, meditation, and counselling. Focus should be on moral science and anger management for these students. Parents of these students should be given tips on how to deal with patience and love. They should be taught to adopt a helping attitude. They should be appreciated for the task given to them rather than reprimanding and insulting them before other students. They should be made to come out of their shell of violence through love and care, and giving them what they desire.

But I feel that if used judiciously, its benefits outweigh its negative points. These days, it has stopped being only a toy for entertainment and has in fact gained momentum as a learning tool. Students are more motivated to finish lessons on mobile devices than through traditional textbooks and workbooks. Using mobile technology makes students get more involved in classes. They correct mistakes in real time and are more excited to do the task. It is also cost effective for schools who need not purchase technology for students.

Teacher authority might be undermined when mobile technology is allowed in classroom. But at the end of the day, the job of the teacher is to be the simulator and to guide the students. The only thing that changes is the traditional books. When used the right way, mobile technology has the potential to help students learn more and comprehend that knowledge. Though in India, not every student has a mobile at home. We can use this technology to make learners aware of how mobiles can be used for more than just to play games or to listen to music. Privacy issues should be considered and tracking of cookies should be done. Ail this will facilitate proper learning and help learners not deviate from the goal.

Simple measures like closing the tap when not in use and saving water from contamination would help. We can save water at home by making smart choices like rainwater harvesting and recycling of water.

Everyone should be aware of the water shortage rules and restrictions and strictly follow in their own area. A few students also dirty the walls by making pencil or ink marks on the walls of the classrooms. Many students don’t observe a decent toilet culture. They don’t help in keeping the campus and the classrooms neat and clean. It is the duty of each and every student to keep the school and its surroundings neat and clean.

The school is a temple of learning. And this temple of learning must maintain its sanctity and cleanliness. We should not litter the school compound, verandas and classrooms with rubbish and left-overs. Let’s make and maintain our school a pleasant place which reflects cleanliness, decency and decorum.

Next door to it was Miss Miller’s school, equally large and popular, and with a yard behind it also. Only a high board fence separated the two playgrounds; and a feud raged constantly between the two schools as to the several merits of the respective teachers and their methods of teaching.

(2) Mrs. Knight’s had one great advantage over the other; it possessed a wood-shed with a climbable roof, which commanded Miss Miller’s premises, and upon this roof the girls used to sit in rows, turning up their noses at the foe in the next yard.

(3) One morning, Katy was late for school. She could not find her things. Her algebra, as she expressed it, had “gone and lost itself” and the string was off her sun-hat. She ran about searching for these articles and banging doors, till Aunt Izzie was out of patience.

(4) “As for your algebra,” she said, “if it is that very dirty book with only one cover, you will find it under the kitchen table; and here is the hat-string. Now, stand still and don’t fidget! You shan’t stir till I have sewed it on properly.”

(5) It was not easy to do so, but Katy bore it as well as she could, only shifting perpetually from one foot to the other. The minute she was released, she flew into the kitchen, seized the algebra, and rushed like a whirlwind to the school.

(6) She ran as fast as she could, but time ran faster, and before she was half-way there, the town clock struck nine, and all hope was lost. She marched into school in a very cross mood.

(7) A day begun in this manner is pretty sure to end badly, as most of us know. All the morning through, things seemed to go wrong. Firstly, Katy made errors in her grammar lessons. Then her hand shook so much when she wrote her composition, that the writing could hardly be read and Mrs. Knight said that she had to do it all over again. This made Katy crosser than ever; the tears came into her eyes from vexation, and she made a bolt for the yard as soon as the bell rang, climbing up all alone to the wood-house roof, where she sat with her back to the school, trying to get her face in order before the rest should come.

(8) Miss Miller’s clock was about four minutes slower than Mrs. Knight’s, so the next playground was empty. It was a warm, breezy day, and as Katy sat there, suddenly a gust of wind blew, and seizing her sun-hat, which was only half tied on, whirled it across the roof. She clutched after it as it flew, but too late. Once, twice, thrice it flapped and Katy saw it lying in a crumpled little heap in the enemy’s yard.

(9) This was horrible! Not merely losing the hat, but to lose it so! In another minute, the Miller girls would be out. Was it to be endured? Never! Katy set her teeth, and sliding rapidly down the roof, seized the fence, and with one bold leap, vaulted into Miss Miller’s yard.

 Being the youth of the society, we should act fast to make our nation corruption-free. The movement led by Anna Hazare for Jan Lok Pal Bill is one of the biggest movements against corruption in the nation’s history.

Corruption starts from the bottom and reaches the top, thus it needs to be curbed at the ground level. There should be a monitoring committee with excellent vigilance to keep a check on corrupt officials and activities. There should be strict penalty and punishment for corrupt people. We need to make more and more people aware and help them to raise their voice and curb corruption.

Sample 1: Emphasizing the Importance of Cleanliness

According to John Wesley, “Cleanliness is next to godliness”.

Hello, respected principal, teachers, and my dear colleagues. I (Name of the Student) is here today to draw attention to the value of cleanliness to all of you.

Being or maintaining cleanliness is a quality or condition of being clean. Everyone needs to be educated on cleanliness, hygiene, and the various diseases that result from poor hygiene. It is crucial for maintaining a healthy environment at home, at school, and for physical well-being. An unclean atmosphere encourages a lot of mosquitos to breed and spread harmful diseases. On the other hand, inadequate personal hygiene lowers immunity and contributes to a number of skin conditions.

We should encourage children to wash their hands before and after meals, brush their teeth, and take regular baths. The "Swachh Bharat" campaign, launched by the Indian Prime Minister on October 2, 2014, aims to provide every family with access to sanitation services such as toilets, solid and liquid waste disposal systems, village cleanliness, and safe and appropriate drinking water sources. 

The "Clean India Campaign" is being actively supported by teachers and students in schools.

Healthy bodies and minds promote broader productivity, higher living standards, and economic growth. As a result, a healthy environment is one that is clean and green. Cleanliness is thus regarded as a symbol of mental purity.  

Sample 2: Corruption

Honorable principal, respected teachers, and my dear friends: I'm going to share my thoughts on the subject of "Corruption is an Evil and the Need to Crush It" today.

Corruption is the act of bribery and fraud committed in order to achieve personal objectives by engaging in unfair activities. This evil has existed in civilization from the beginning of time. This evil has spread to every industry and has evolved into a widespread practice.

What might lead somebody to engage in corruption? These could include a need for fame, wealth, power, and possessions. It is a ladder of achievement that people climb to the top of by abusing the rules and rules and regulations, employing improper favors, and strategies.

Many different kinds of corruption are common, including nepotism, carelessness of duty, theft of public resources, and fraud. The rights of the common man are being decreased because of corruption, which also hurts the image of our country. 

Since we are the society's youth, we must get rid of our country of corruption. One of the largest anti-corruption movements in the history of the country is the one led by Anna Hazare for the Jan LokPal Bill.

Since corruption spreads from the bottom to the top, it needs to be stopped there. A monitoring committee should be in place with good monitoring to keep an eye on corrupt officials and their actions. Corrupt individuals should face severe penalties and punishment. We need to promote awareness among people, support them in speaking out, and help eliminate corruption.

The two main objectives of speech writing should be to communicate with the audience, and to encourage them to agree with what we have presented. A speech should usually include the following.

Introduction

The first thing to address in speech writing is what the speechwriter expects to accomplish. The goals will influence the structure and speech of the language, leading to more detailed insights.

• The speech should be appropriate for the intended audience.
• The most important sentence in a speech is the first sentence because it determines whether the audience will read it or not.
• Depending on the topic and the purpose of the speech, the writer can captivate the audience with happy, sad, frightening or unexpected stories.

The majority of the speech writing format should be written to present ideas and supporting information. Students should concentrate on one idea at a time, and then fully examine it before moving on to the next. 

• They must provide smooth, logical flows from one information to the next. 
• When writing an informative or provocative speech, the writer should use the problem-and-solution and solution approach to structure it. 
• As a result, they should start out their speech by outlining what is wrong before moving on to how to fix it in the part that comes next.
• Students must be careful to create a consistent tone for the speech. 
• The speech's overall tone communicates its original idea, which might range from sad to positive, humorous to demanding. 
• The language used and delivery manner will have an impact on the speech's tone.

While writing a conclusion for speech writing, students must highlight the primary reasons by summarizing key takeaways or providing one last example that perfectly supports what students have written in their speech. 

• Once the writer has finished writing their speech, they should go back to it several times to identify areas for improvement. 
• The conclusion should be written such that the viewers should take away something from the conclusion. 
• It might be a message, an appeal for support, or a summary of a speech.
• Analyze the speech from top to bottom once students are done writing. 
• By doing this, the writer can assess whether it seems logical and identify if any difficult parts can be cut, worked out, or better explained.

Tips for Speech Writing 

Some of the tips that students can follow while in speech writing are given below.

• Make sure that the language that the students are using is appropriate for the audience they are speaking to. 
• Using references is suggested. Examples and references can be used as an opening statement or a closing sentence. Students can also add a quote in between the speech.
• Students must make sure to use paragraphs when writing.
• Study last year's question papers to get a brief idea of what topics students can expect in their coming exams..
• Read editorials or opinions in the newspaper. They offer different perspectives and thoughts that could be useful in exams.
• Students can write a list of all the important points on the rough sheet to ensure that they don't miss anything important while speech writing. This helps you in keeping a pattern, which is essential.
• Presentation quality is important.
• Make sure you check the content of the speech twice for spelling and grammatical errors. 
• Students must make sure there are enough lines in between paragraphs to make it look neat.
• Always keep a few general phrases ready that can be added to speech writing. They act as a supporting factor to your speech.

My Adventure in the Kitchen

The older generation frequently complains that families are not what they used to be. Families have split, they do not live together. There is not enough warmth among family members.

Most of these feelings are true. The main reason for the change is the breaking up of the joint family system. Delhi government has banned the use of polythene bags as they are a hazard to human beings, and to the environment.

In the last twenty years, the use of polythene bags has spread like wildfire. From the smallest to the biggest sale in villages, towns and metropolitan cities, plastic bags are being used without a thought about their effect on the environment. Polythene is non- biodegradable, therefore, it cannot be thrown away and forgotten. Polythene bags form about 40% of a city’s garbage. They choke drains and cause flooding of colonies. From the garbage dumps, they find their way into the stomachs of cows and cause death by constriction of the intestines.

If attempts to recycle polythene are hazardous, the chemicals used in the process are extremely toxic and can cause cancer. Foodstuff carried or stored in recycled bags gets contaminated and harms human beings.

Innocent youngsters need to protect themselves against this onslaught. It is sensible to protect oneself against this avoidable life threatening evil.

When he was the president, on an official visit to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram where he once worked, he took time off to visit George, a cobbler, whom he used to chat with while George repaired Kalam’s shoes.

‘True greatness resides in humility.’ A.P.J. Abdul Kaiam is an example of this truth. High position did not rob him of humanity and humility.

Remember reading stories of King Vikramaditya or Caliph Haroon A1 Rashid going out among the people in disguise to find out how they lived and what problems they faced. Today, where can one find such love and concern among the great ones?

Fortunately, India always produces a few individuals who are unique in their greatness and in humility. Ex-President, A.P.J. Abdul Kaiam is one such who while working, took time off to visit cobbler George in Thiruvananthapuram with whom he used to chat while George repaired his shoes.

Gandhiji was a true lover of humanity. He felt a bonding with the poor and often stayed in the sweeper colony. He did not like the derogatory terms used for them and coined the word ‘Harijan’ or ‘People of God’ for them.

True essence of greatness lies not in spectacular achievements alone. It resides in recognising the other human being as an equal and embracing him, shedding one’s arrogance.

Question 2. Recently, the CBSE asked for suggestions from students to bring about educational reforms. In the picture you see some suggestions given by the students of classes XI and XII.

Changes Suggested by Students in Current 10 + 2 System It is a good move by the CBSE to ask students’ opinions for education reforms. I wish to make some suggestions that will make learning enjoyable as well as useful for us students:

• Content should be more need-oriented.
• Teaching may be done in more modern ways-more use of the internet, modern equipment for labs mandatory for schools.
• Prevent cheating and use of unfair means in exams by computerized examinations.
• Fair evaluation.
• Textbooks should be error-free.
• Frequent updating of textbooks should be done.
• Textbooks may be accompanied by audio-visual material to make teaching more interesting and relevant.

♦ Visual Input: Argumentative Composition

Question 1. On 26th January 2009, four police officers of Mumbai and two NSG commandos were awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously. They Said down their lives fighting terrorists in Mumbai from 26th to 29th November 2008.

On 26th Nov., 2008, India’s financial capital, Mumbai was under siege. Terrorists came by the sea and occupied key locations in the city. City’s top hotels, the Taj, Oberoi and the Trident, were held to ransom. Nariman House, the Jewish Centre of the city, was another target where the terrorists held Jewish families hostage. In addition, the terrorists opened fire at V.T. Station killing several passengers.

Almost immediately, Mumbai police swang into action. With old fashioned weapons, policemen drove away the terrorists from V.T. Station, Cama Hospital, Girgaum and Chaupatty. In the process, many policemen lost their lives. But their valour foiled the evil designs of the terrorists to take hostages. Meanwhile NSG commandos were called and they entered the hotels and Nariman House. After grim fighting for almost four days, they were able to kill the terrorists and free the people trapped inside.

The security forces had to pay a heavy price. Mr Hemant Karkare, Anti-terror Squad Chief, Mr Ashok Kamte, Additional Police Commissioner, Mr Vijay Salaskar, Police Inspector and Mr Tukaram Omble, Assistant sub-inspector sacrificed their lives. Of the NSG commandos, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Havildar Gajender Singh died in action. All three valiant men were honoured posthumously by the President, Mrs Pratibha Patil on 2,6th January with Ashok Chakra.

Clean Up or Perish! by Sheela Ranee

One of Mahatma Gandhi’s major quarrels with Kasturba took place over the issue of cleanliness. He was enraged at her refusal to do the cleaning chores herself. Finally, she had to bow down to his wishes.

How beneficial it would have been if the people generally had bowed down to his wishes on the matter of cleanliness ! With Gandhiji, cleanliness was a passion; with the average Indian, it is the usual omission.

The lack of a sense of cleanliness in Indians is amazing, particularly when one observes the fuss made about personal cleanliness, or the cleanliness inside one’s home. We throw our rubbish on the streets. Our neighbourhood stinks due to human and animal waste. We throw litter wherever we wish. Our rivers are dirty due to animal bathing, clothes washing and throwing waste in them. This is the prime reason for the poor health of Indians. Skin, respiratory, stomach ailments and other diseases result from filth.

How to Write a Speech Format?

Speech writing gives you a chance to leave an everlasting and meaningful impression on the audience. You might have always believed that you are not good at public speaking. And speech writing may bring you out in cold sweats, but this is different.

Step 1 - Decide the Purpose of Your Speech 

To understand the purpose of your speech, consider these queries:

• What is the main motive behind it?
• Is it to inform or persuade? Is it to entertain or demonstrate? Or is it a combination of these?
• What do you want to achieve with your speech?
• Do you want your audience to act upon something, or do you want to convince them to believe what you are saying?

Identify your listeners and decide which type of speech is suitable for your targeted audience. If you are going to deliver a speech at a wedding, write a special occasion speech . Similarly, if your motive is to persuade the audience, you’ll have to write a persuasive speech .

Step 2 - Choose a Speech Topic 

Choose an effective speech topic that catches the audience’s attention immediately. A good speech topic is your first step to impress the audience.

You can select any topic according to the type of speech you need to deliver. Pick a motivational speech topic if you want to get the audience to act upon your message. If you want to make your audience laugh, decide on an entertaining speech topic .

Step 3 - Conduct Research 

Conduct thorough research on your particular subject to collect relevant material. Finding credible and updated material is crucial, as good research is the backbone of sound speech. 

Before you write your speech, you need to know what your speech will be about exactly. And how long it needs to be, i.e., 5 minutes or 30 minutes long. So, always collect the data according to the time limit. 

For a 5-minute speech, you only need a brief material. Your speech should revolve around the central idea. If your speech is 30 minutes long, you need to collect enough details to cover in 30 minutes. 

Step 4 - Create an Outline

Now that you have the material for your speech, craft an outline to organize your material. Drafting an outline at first always saves precious time. 

Write keywords in the outline that prompt you to remember what you’ll include in your speech. Having an outline for your speech is like having a road map that guides you throughout the speech delivery.

Briefly tell your audience what you are going to share so that they have an idea of what to expect from your speech.
