Will Nediger’s Sunday puzzle evolves as it’s solved.

A big, tan mastiff with a black muzzle snuggles its face against the face of a person with short brown hair.

By Caitlin Lovinger

Jump to: Tricky Clues | Today’s Theme

SUNDAY PUZZLE — Will Nediger is a professional crossword constructor from London, Ontario. This is his 47th puzzle in The New York Times since a 2006 debut, and his 23rd Sunday grid. He likes puzzles that violate standard crossword rules and conventions — by including the same clue and entry twice in one puzzle, for example — as a way of making solvers think twice about the reasons behind them.

This puzzle’s subject is a philosophical conundrum that dates back more than 2,000 years; its presentation is deceptively simple, as well as graceful and thought-provoking.

Today’s Theme

The duplicated clue and entry in this grid come at the beginning and end of the theme, at 22- and 121-Across, bookending another seven entries at 33-, 48-, 51-, 71-, 87-, 90- and 107-Across. The first four letters of each of these entries are shaded in the grid, and that’s where the trick lies: It’s a word ladder game, in which a single letter of those four letters changes in each entry as you move down the grid, forming a series of different four-letter words. Although each of those short words is part of a longer entry, it’s not hidden; it’s part of a multi-word phrase, term or name.

The first and last entry explain this action neatly, once you solve it (and learn about it, perhaps, as I did): “Thought experiment that asks whether an object remains the same object if its parts are replaced one by one.” This solves to SHIP OF THESEUS, with S-H-I-P in those shaded squares. You may remember Theseus as the slayer of the Minotaur of Crete ; he arrived there, to do the deed, via a ship that figured in other exploits and required repair after repair. It was ultimately deemed worthy of display in Athens. Plutarch described this in “The Life of Theseus,” in the first century C.E.:

“The ship wherein Theseus and the youth of Athens returned from Crete had thirty oars, and was preserved by the Athenians down even to the time of Demetrius Phalereus, for they took away the old planks as they decayed, putting in new and stronger timber in their places, insomuch that this ship became a standing example among the philosophers, for the logical question of things that grow; one side holding that the ship remained the same, and the other contending that it was not the same.”

As you navigate the theme entries, notice the shaded letters undergo their transition. At 33-Across, the “Acorn-loving duo” is CHIP AND DALE; SHIP becomes CHIP. At 48-Across, the “Restaurant pick-up option?” is CHOP STICKS, and the “Hong Kong action hero who frequently collaborated with John Woo,” at 51-Across, is CHOW YUN FAT.

At this point, I expected a four-letter word without a single letter in common with SHIP at 71-Across, which is the fifth and middle theme entry “Ostentatious behavior.” Instead, the entry is SHOW BOATING, which I took as a jokey reference to the vessel behind the theme, although that might be a stretch. It took finishing the rest of the run — which, as we know, ends where we started — to understand why this entry marks the return of the letter S in SHIP. We’re working our way back to where we started — SHIP OF THESEUS, again, at 121-Across — and once we get there it’s as if nothing ever happened. Or is it?

Tricky Clues

42A. I love this: “The artist François Boucher said that it was ‘too green and badly lit.’” This 18th-century master of Rococo stuffed his paintings with the most extravagant, ornamental flowers, foliage and rolling clouds — over-the-top depictions of NATURE.
