The VALUE rubrics were developed by teams of faculty experts representing colleges and universities across the United States through a process that examined many existing campus rubrics and related documents for each learning outcome and incorporated additional feedback from faculty. The rubrics articulate fundamental criteria for each learning outcome, with performance descriptors demonstrating progressively more sophisticated levels of attainment. The rubrics are intended for institutional-level use in evaluating and discussing student learning, not for grading. The core expectations articulated in all 16 of the VALUE rubrics can and should be translated into the language of individual campuses, disciplines, and even courses. The utility of the VALUE rubrics is to position learning at all undergraduate levels within a basic framework of expectations such that evidence of learning can by shared nationally through a common dialog and understanding of student success.

5 Characteristics of an Effective School Team

Check out these tips for growing powerful leadership teams that can transform schools.

I've been thinking a lot about what makes a good team in a school context. I'll share some of these thoughts, but I really want to hear your ideas on this subject.

I'm going to admit that it's taken me a while to feel convinced by the power of teams. Until recently, I didn't have great experiences in teams. I felt that alone I could produce whatever needed to be created better, and quicker, than working with others. I often felt frustrated working in teams -- the process felt so slow and cumbersome. I felt like I was usually given (or took) the bulk of the work. I didn't really know what an effective team looked like, how one worked together, or what the benefits could be.

In the last few years, however, my experience in a couple different teams shifted these beliefs. Now, I'm compelled to figure out how to create and develop good teams -- and to identify the specific moves that a coach or facilitator makes in this process. I want to figure out how to grow powerful teams that can transform schools.

Why Does this Matter?

Here's why I think we need to articulate our beliefs and practices about good teams:

Strong teams within a school are essential to retaining and sustaining teachers. In schools with low staff turnover (even in challenging urban contexts), teachers report feeling connected to colleagues and supported by them. They also describe feeling that they belong to a team whose members are fulfilling a mission together. The emotions activated in this context are those which keep us engaged in a difficult endeavor for a long time. Public education is a hard place to be these days -- we need structures (such as strong teams) that cultivate our emotional resilience.

If a team is effective, then people learn from each other. They accomplish far more than would be possible alone. They inspire and challenge each other. An individual's strengths can be exploited, and we don't have to do the stuff we're not so good at. Again, this is an efficient approach to undertaking a huge project (transforming a school, for example), and it feels good.

What Makes a Good Team?

Here are some key characteristics that I believe make a good team:

1. A good team knows why it exists.

It's not enough to say, "We're the 6th grade team of teachers" -- that's simply what defines you (you teach the same grade), not why you exist. A purpose for being is a team might be: "We come together as a team to support each other, learn from each other, and identify ways that we can better meet the needs of our sixth grade students." Call it a purpose or a mission -- it doesn't really matter. What matters is that those who attend never feel like they're just obligated to attend "another meeting." The purpose is relevant, meaningful, and clear.

2. A good team creates a space for learning.

There are many reasons why those of us working in schools might gather in a team -- but I believe that all of those reasons should contain opportunities for learning with and from each other. I have met very few educators who don't want to learn -- we're a curious bunch and there's so much to learn about education. So in an effective team, learning happens within a safe context. We can make mistakes, take risks, and ask every single question we want.

3. In a good team, there's healthy conflict.

This is inevitable and essential if we're learning together and embarked on some kind of project together. We disagree about ideas, there's constructive dialogue and dissent, and our thinking is pushed.

4. Members of a good team trust each other.

This means that when there's the inevitable conflict, it's managed. People know each other. We listen to each other. There are agreements about how we treat each other and engage with each other, and we monitor these agreements. There's also someone such as a facilitator who ensures that this is a safe space. Furthermore, in order for there to be trust, within a strong team we see equitable participation among members and shared decision-making. We don't see a replication of the inequitable patterns and structures of our larger society (such as male dominance of discourse and so on).

5. A good team has a facilitator, leader, or shared leaders.

There's someone -- or a rotation of people -- who steer the ship. This ensures that there's the kind of intentionality, planning, and facilitation in the moment that's essential for a team to be high functioning.

This last point is what I've been contemplating for this fall: What does a good team leader do? How exactly does she facilitate? How can leadership rotate or be shared?

I currently work with a fantastic team of instructional coaches, and we're thinking about this together. I'm so grateful for this team! We're developing a facilitation rubric for coaches -- a tool that identifies and articulates the precise moves we make in order to develop a team that feels purposeful and safe for learning, and that leads to improved outcomes and experiences for the students we serve. We're hoping that this tool will be helpful in our own practice and that it could be useful to others.

Over a decade ago, in a previous edition of the International Research Handbook on Values Education and Student Wellbeing , we wrote about the effects of implementing what we then dubbed the “new” Values Education: the symbiotic effects between the explicit teaching of a school’s values and the enhancement of the quality of student learning and the effectiveness of teaching. As such, the “new” Values Education, more recently called Values-based Education (VbE), was essentially a novel conception of the craft of teaching and the processes of learning. At times, we also expressed the view, without much real elaboration, that VbE presented an approach to learning and teaching better suited to the times in which we were then living. We also suggested that it had the capacity to enhance students’ cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being without fleshing out details of the enhancement of spiritual growth. This chapter seeks to bolster those two claims in ways that suggest how VbE might help humankind address the life-or-death challenges it presently confronts around environmental degradation, widespread social and cultural disharmony, the escalation of youth suicide, domestic violence, child abuse, and neglect, to name just a few.

The Importance of Teamwork Skills in Work and School

Would you consider yourself a lone wolf when it comes to projects and planning? Does the thought of collaborating with others leave you with a sense of dread? If it does, then you might have a tough road ahead of you.

“Few jobs today don’t involve working with others in teams,” says Andrew Selepak, professor at the University of Florida. While the collaboration may look very different from industry to industry, it’s likely to form part of your job. This is precisely why teamwork skills are a vital element in today’s workforce. Whether you’ve had a bad experience working in groups in the past or you believe operating on your own is more efficient, there will come a time when working in a group will not only be helpful—but also vital.

Teamwork skills will serve you well in your future career, but it is also extremely beneficial during your time in school. Regardless of what program you’re enrolled in, teamwork skills will likely be incorporated in your coursework and could go a long way in helping you excel academically. It’s time to stop dreading group work and leverage these opportunities to hone a valuable skill set.

Teamwork skills in school

“I often hear the collective groan of my students whenever I announce a group project,” says VP of Magas Media Consultants and Pace University associate professor Jennifer Lee Magas. “Group projects seem to instill a horror in students like nothing else—and it’s understandable.”

Much of the dislike of group projects comes from students not trusting their peers to pull their weight and place an equal amount of time and effort into the work.

Magas says the best strategy to avoid negative group outcomes is to communicate. “It’s a simple fact, and it may not be all that comforting on the surface, but the secret to accomplishing work with others is to talk about it. Plan who is doing what, know what your role is, and if you’re shouldering too much work, then let that be known.”

“The benefit [of group work] is learning an openness to critique, which is essential for healthy working relationships,” says Heather Walker Peterson, English department chair at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul. Peterson advises students to practice having a voice in project management by discussing the process and initiating a plan for group meetings.

“In school and in work, everybody just wants to come out on the other side with a good product to show for their effort,” Magas says. “It’s best for everyone to know truthfully what your schedule is like, how you function, what your best assets are and what you think someone else could do better.”

This kind of communication is much easier to learn in a school environment then on your first project in a new job. And it can save you lots of frustration, or even costly mistakes, later on. Teamwork can also improve the outcome of a school project because you’re able to draw upon each other’s unique strengths. This ability, of seeking the expertise and ability of other people will serve you well in your academic pursuits—and throughout your career.

“Students need to realize that in the real world, they will have to work with and for others no matter what,” Selepak says. “Learning this while in school and dealing with different personalities and people with different abilities will only help them do it after school when their job is on the line.”

Teamwork skills in a career

While it’s true some jobs depend less on teamwork than others, the uses for collaborative skills in a career are still applicable and nearly endless. “Outside of school, the working world is all about communicating with other people,” Magas says. “But working with others can be hard. Managing time, planning meet-ups and functioning as one entity takes practice and loads of patience.” In this sense, the more practice you get in a group setting, the better.

“In software development and technology fields, the ability to collaborate and work as a team is critical a project’s success,” says Alan Zucker, founding principal of Project Management Essentials LLC . Zucker points out that two of the bigger trends in technology today—Agile and DevOps—both depend on teamwork in their core philosophy.

In this environment, team members interact constantly. “Research has shown that these small, collaborative teams are highly effective,” Zucker says. “Agile projects are, on average, three times more likely to be successful than traditional projects.”

The success of these models is likely to lead to a wider implementation of teamwork-dependent projects across many industries. Zucker says applicants who can demonstrate teamwork skills are more likely to land their jobs. “The ability to work with customers or other team members is a critical soft skill.”

“Teamwork is always an incredible lesson, and an excellent way to gather basic life skills that make you a better candidate for any position in the business world,” Magas says. “Beyond all traits, having good people skills puts you at the top of the ‘desirable’ list.”

Leveraging teamwork skills in the job hunt

The tricky thing about a job application and interview process is knowing how to represent your strengths and experiences. Our sources agree that an individual with excellent teamwork skills is an attractive candidate for most positions. But how do you showcase those soft skills to your potential employers?

“A common interview question is ‘Tell me about a time when you worked on a team,’” Zucker says. “Many students will talk about a group or team project.” If the project involved challenges, such as coordination difficulties or frustrating team members, your response to the problem is a good focal point to talk about. Zucker emphasizes that these challenges are also common in the workplace.

“The ability to work with others, which demonstrates high emotional intelligence, is a skill that transcends specific environments. So if you were the leader of a club or team and brought people together for the common good, then you have the experience,” Zucker says.

How can I improve my teamwork skills?

The answer is pretty simple—join a team! Whether it’s forming a study group for one of your classes or joining club or organization in your field of study, putting yourself in situations that force you to work with others will help you become more comfortable. If you’re not in school, that’s okay too. Start volunteering or begin planning a book club with your friends. Interacting with others in any setting will help you build your teamwork skills.

Having some experience under your belt can help you boost your hiring potential. Those real-life scenarios can help you highlight your competency in this area.

Psychologists are pinpointing the factors that make teams gel—research that has far-reaching implications for health care, education, research, industry and more

What makes teams work?

The lone wolf is becoming an endangered species. In fields from health care to hospitality, startups to big business, teamwork has become the favored way to get things done. "The world is so complex, no one person has the skills or knowledge to accomplish all that we want to accomplish," says Susan McDaniel, PhD, a psychologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center and 2016 APA president known for her dedication to team-based work. "Interdisciplinary teams are the way to make that happen."

While humans have always joined forces with one another to achieve shared goals, psychologists are zeroing in on the methods and processes that make those collaborations more efficient and successful. "What's changing is the understanding and appreciation that there is a science behind how to manage teams," says Suzanne Bell, PhD, an associate professor of industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology at DePaul University in Chicago.

Now, a special issue of American Psychologist (Vol. 73, No. 4, 2018) details what psychologists have learned—and need to learn—about working in teams. "The Science of Teamwork," co-edited by McDaniel and colleague Eduardo Salas, PhD, of Rice University in Houston, in cooperation with American Psychologist editor-in-chief Anne E. Kazak, PhD, offers 21 articles that delve into the theory, research and applications of team science.

Here, we look at some of the most significant findings in the special issue, particularly the ways that team processes matter for psychologists, whether they're working in health care, research, industry, the military or education.

Building a dream team

Sometimes teams seem to click without too much effort, working together seamlessly and producing great work as a result. Other collaborations crash and burn. A team's success often depends on its composition, as Bell and her co-authors describe in their contribution to the special issue.

Surface-level attributes of individual team members—such as age, gender and reputation—can be important to the team's overall function, but they aren't necessarily the factors that matter most, Bell says. Instead, it's the "deep-level" factors you can't see at a glance, such as the members' personality traits, values and abilities, that tend to have a much bigger impact on work teams, studies suggest.

Those deep-level factors shape what researchers call the ABCs of teamwork: the attitudes, behaviors and cognitive states that collectively influence whether a team achieves its goals. Those elements depend to some degree on the context and on the team's objectives, Bell says. If the goal is to design an innovative new digital device, it's a good idea to build a team with diverse thinkers who bring a range of knowledge, skills and abilities to the project. But if a team's goal is to be more efficient, diverse attitudes might be less critical.

Team success also hinges on some basic tenets of team composition, say Bell and her co-authors. One person's mood and outlook can spread within a team, so a pessimistic team member could negatively influence the way the whole group views its goals. Individuals who value working in groups tend to be both more confident and more cooperative in a team setting. When team members are high in conscientiousness, they are better at self-regulating their teamwork. And groups composed of high-ability members who are able to learn, reason, adapt and solve problems are more likely to work well together.

Researchers are working to design algorithms that help organizations create effective teams for specific goals. In a project with NASA, for instance, Bell and colleagues are developing algorithms to identify crew members suited to working together on long-distance space missions.

Ultimately, such tools can help organizations create the best possible teams from the outset and tailor interventions for the unique needs of a team with a specific composition. "Teams are complex systems," Bell says. "The more you can manage them using a scientific basis, the better your teams will be."

The secret sauce: Cooperation in the military

Using scientific methods to understand teams isn't a new trend. Military researchers have been studying teamwork systematically for more than half a century, as Gerald F. Goodwin, PhD, of the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, and colleagues describe in an article in the special issue. "The military has been really central in supporting and executing research on teams since the 1950s," he says. "That support has been critical to moving this science forward."

Research on military teams has led to several core ideas that inform our understanding of how teams work best in both military and civilian settings.

That distinction might seem obvious, says Goodwin, but understanding the elements that allow teams to function well—team cohesion and shared mental models, for example—is important for training teams as well as evaluating their performance. "How well people work together may be more important than how well they work on the tasks," he says. "The secret sauce comes from the teamwork."

Research from military settings has also clarified the importance of team cognition—what teams think, how they think together and how well synchronized their beliefs and perceptions are. Team cognition is what allows team members to understand intuitively how their teammates will think and act, whether on the battlefield, in a surgical suite or on a basketball court. "Team cognition is really important for teams that have to quickly adapt to dynamic circumstances without having the opportunity to communicate a lot," Goodwin says.

Many of the empirical findings from military research apply to civilian teams as well. From the earliest studies, military and civilian researchers have openly shared findings and worked together to grow the science of teamwork, Goodwin says. The military, for instance, has made use of results from team research in aviation. Meanwhile, findings from military-funded research have informed processes in many industries, health care in particular.

Teaming up for better health

Teams in the military and in health care share an important commonality: They can be operating in situations in which team coordination can be a matter of life or death. Some of the earlier research on health-care teams focused on hospital settings, where teamwork failures can lead to patient harms such as misdiagnoses, medication mistakes, surgical errors and hospital-acquired infections. In a paper for the special issue, Michael Rosen, PhD, an associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and colleagues describe how medical team coordination affects patient safety and the quality of patient care.

Unlike teams in a business setting that might collaborate with one another for months at a time, health-care teams are often fluid, especially in hospitals. Medical personnel including physicians, nurses, surgical assistants and pharmacists might have to jump into a new care team at each shift change or for each new patient. The fundamentals of good collaboration are the same no matter how transient the team, Rosen says: "It's about having clear roles, clear goals and a clear plan of care."

Healthcare team

Teams are also becoming increasingly important in primary-care settings. "I think the industry is recognizing that we don't have a choice. Health care has become too complex, and the current model isn't working very well," says Kevin Fiscella, MD, a professor of family medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center who co-authored a special issue article with McDaniel on the science of primary-care teams. "It's not a question of whether we adopt teamwork [in primary care], but how we do it—and how we begin addressing the barriers to teams."

Unfortunately, those barriers are not insignificant, Fiscella adds. One challenge is simply changing the way that many physicians think about primary care. "I graduated from medical school in 1980, and our whole training was that care is about me and the patient, and everybody else is there to support that relationship," he says. While that mentality is changing, it's not dead yet. "That unfortunate mental model of what it means to provide primary care can make it difficult" to move toward team thinking, he adds.

Systemic challenges also make collaboration difficult in primary-care settings. Clinicians such as family physicians, specialists and mental health professionals might be spread out in different locations. "It makes it harder to support other team members who are making important contributions," Fiscella says.

The traditional fee-for-service payment model also makes it difficult for medical professionals to prioritize teamwork, Fiscella and McDaniel add. Research has shown, for example, that when primary-care teams have short "huddles" before a visit to coordinate their care plans, they routinely report better teamwork and more supportive practice climates. Similarly, short team debriefings at the end of the day to hash out what worked and what didn't can boost learning and performance among team members and improve outcomes for patients.

Yet due to scheduling challenges, it can be tough for primary-care teams to find even a few minutes to come together for huddles or debriefings. "Time is money. If you take time out for a team meeting, that's lost revenue," Fiscella says.

Teamwork in the lab

Academia is famous for its departmental silos, but that, too, is changing as multidisciplinary research becomes the norm across all fields of science. Team science is gaining momentum for good reason, says Kara Hall, PhD, director of the Science of Team Science Team at the National Cancer Institute and co-author of a special issue article about collaboration in science.

Globalization and technology have made the pressing problems of society ever more complex, Hall says. Take the public health problem of reducing tobacco use, for instance. To address that challenge, you need an understanding of the genetic, neural, psychological and behavioral factors related to tobacco dependence, not to mention related social forces and the public policy context. "If you want to solve an applied global health problem, you need people who can bring their specialized knowledge to bear," she says. "Multidisciplinary teams can really [create] movement on these big problems."

Research on team science has found that collaborating across organizational and geographic boundaries increases productivity and scientific impact. And cross-disciplinary teams produce more academic publications and publish in more diverse outlets, Hall and her colleagues report.

Despite proven benefits, it can be hard for a researcher to wrap his or her head around team science. Most scientists were trained in an apprenticeship model, learning the ropes from a single mentor. "Historically, our scientists haven't been trained to work in teams or to lead teams," Hall says.

Even if scientists are prepared to take the leap to team-based research, their institutions might not be. Tenure and promotion are usually based on outputs such as academic publications, with more weight given to a paper's lead author and to articles published in journals in a researcher's own discipline. That model rewards competition, with the potential for tension as team members hash out who should be credited as first author. Team science is built instead on interdisciplinary cooperation—but so far, only a few academic institutions reward those cooperative efforts.

Because of the lack of team training and the institutional hurdles, Hall says, a research project may be technically and scientifically well-conceived yet fail to yield anticipated outcomes. If a cross-disciplinary team fails to meet its goals, was it because the topic was better suited to intradisciplinary science? Was it a problem with the way the team was composed? Or could the team have succeeded if members had received more institutional support and training?

Still, some early patterns are emerging to guide the way toward improved science teams, Hall and her co-authors report. Some studies have found that small teams are best for generating ideas that shake up the status quo, for instance, while larger teams are better at further developing those big ideas. And while cultural diversity can increase a science team's impact, diverse teams might benefit from more team science principles to head off challenges such as miscommunication.

Multicutural questions

The role of diversity in teamwork is a topic that needs a lot more attention, not just for scientific teams but in all areas of teamwork, says Jennifer Feitosa, PhD, an assistant professor of I/O psychology at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College. In the special issue, Feitosa and her co-authors describe the ways in which multicultural teams may function differently from teams in which all members share the same cultural background.

While multicultural teams can generate unique solutions, it can take longer for a diverse team to find its groove compared with a team made up of people with similar backgrounds and mindsets.

Individuals in multicultural teams are more likely to have different ways of doing things and might not understand where their fellow team members are coming from. "If you take a snapshot of a multicultural team at the beginning, it doesn't look so promising. They often need more time to all get on the same page," Feitosa says.

In both multicultural teams and more homogenous teams, trust is a key component for effective collaboration, Feitosa and her colleagues reported. But because of their differences, members of multicultural teams might have difficulty trusting each other at first.

"Focusing on shared goals can really help to develop that trust," she says.

In other ways, diverse teams operate quite differently from teams with cultural similarities. In the general teamwork literature, for example, research suggests that it's important to address and manage team conflict head-on. But when team members come from cultures that emphasize harmony and avoid conflict, calling out the elephant in the room can make people extremely uncomfortable and interfere with the teamwork dynamic, Feitosa says.

Differences in leadership style can also hinder multicultural teams. In North America, organizations are moving toward giving individuals greater autonomy and opportunities for self-management, Feitosa notes. "In very collectivistic and high power-distance cultures, people might rely more heavily on direction from team leaders and might rather be told what to do."

Fortunately, teams can prevent cultural differences from becoming obstacles by creating a "hybrid" culture, the authors report. "It's about establishing team norms that aren't entirely your culture or entirely my culture, but a little bit of everyone's," Feitosa says.

The research on multicultural teams can guide those looking to create collaborations that are both diverse and high-functioning. But to fully harness the value of cross-cultural perspectives and talents, Feitosa and her colleagues conclude, much more needs to be done to integrate findings from research on single-culture teams and multicultural teams. "Teamwork is a complex phenomenon, so we need to get more creative in how we look at this," she says.

Intervening to improve teamwork

Although researchers have more work to do to fully understand team processes, especially in multicultural contexts, it's not too early to apply what we know, Salas says. For the special issue, Salas and colleagues described evidence-based approaches for improving teamwork.

Organizations are clamoring for tools to make their teams more effective. "Team building is probably the No. 1 human resources intervention in the world," Salas says. Yet the results of such programs are mixed. If you send a group of executives into the wilderness for two days, they might have fun and learn something about one another—but it doesn't mean they'll magically develop new teamwork skills.

Put them into evidence-based team trainings, however, and the story is different. "Team training works," Salas says. "We know how to design, develop and evaluate it."

In particular, Salas and his colleagues describe four types of team development interventions that have been shown to benefit team performance: team training, team building, leadership training and debriefing.

Team training describes formalized learning experiences that aim to improve specific team skills or competencies. Structured team training has been shown to improve teamwork functioning and outcomes in industries such as education, engineering and health care. A prime example is TeamSTEPPS , an intervention to reduce medical errors by improving communication and teamwork skills among health-care professionals (see sidebar). Team-building interventions, meanwhile, aim to better teams by improving interpersonal relationships, clarifying roles and improving problem-solving. Such interventions might focus on increasing trust or setting challenging yet specific goals, for example. Leadership training targets a team leader's knowledge, skills and abilities, and improvements to these areas have been shown to support effective overall team processes. When leaders are trained in occupational safety, for instance, their teams exhibit safer behaviors on the job. Finally, team debriefings of the sort used in primary-care settings have been shown to improve performance in a variety of settings, including aviation and military teams.

There's power in numbers, and high-performing teams can be more than the sum of their parts. It's fortunate, then, that teamwork processes can be measured and improved with targeted interventions. But to keep sharpening the science, psychologists must continue exploring the conditions that allow teams to succeed, Salas says.

There's certainly no shortage of demand, he adds. "There's a tremendous amount of interest in trying to understand collaboration and teamwork—in health care, aviation, academia, the military, space exploration, the corporate world. I hope this special issue will inspire people to improve their teams, and to look for new ways of motivating their teams using psychological science."

The changing landscape of public education has had a significant impact on the roles of the personnel who serve in our schools. Teacher shortages, increasing numbers of English language learners, and the rising enrollment of students with disabilities and other special needs are just some of the factors that make the need for a dynamic school team more necessary than ever (Gerlach, 2002). To be successful, teachers and paraeducators must view themselves as teams and partners in the educational process.A common thread across definitions of teams is that teamwork can be defined as a process among partners who share mutual goals and work together to achieve the goals. Teamwork allows people to discuss their work together and, as a result, to grow professionally.Input from all team members needs to be solicited. Questions need to be asked and answered. Ideas need to be shared. Teamwork doesn’t happen by accident. It requires effort and commitment, and a willingness to accept the challenges of working together.Team effectiveness can be achieved by sharing expectations with one another, by allowing the paraeducator to participate in the planning process, by appreciating each other’s unique personality traits, by respecting diversity, and by demonstrating a positive attitude toward teamwork. Once a team works well together, the job is less stressful, more enjoyable, more rewarding for all team members, and results in greater benefit to students.

Characteristics of New Teams

According to a review of research on team effectiveness done by Abelson and Woodman (1983), a team that has just formed usually has some or all of the following characteristics:

  • There is considerable confusion as to roles that team members must assume.
  • There is confusion as to the social and professional relationships among members of the team.
  • Individuals have some assets or competencies relative to the team’s purpose. However, some people may be unaware of how their skills or knowledge relate to team goals. Perhaps more importantly, some individuals may be unaware of (or may not value) the strengths and competencies of others, or may not appreciate their relationship to team goals.
  • While there may be some understanding of short-range goals (e.g., why the team was brought together), understanding of long-range goals is likely to be more elusive.
  • In the absence of established norms, rules or policies, there is considerable confusion about how the team will operate, how decisions will be made, and so on.
  • Team members (and particularly leaders) do not pay much early attention to social and professional relationships, being more likely to focus initially on the task.

These characteristics are important for us to consider when focusing on the teacher-paraeducator team.

Goals and Effectiveness

If a team is to be effective, all members must have a clear understanding of and agreement on the team goals. The elements of a goal include (a) what is to be achieved; (b) a measure of accomplishment – how we will know when the outcome has been reached; and, (c) the time factor – when we want to have the goal completed. The goals of the team must be developed with input from all team members, and roles and responsibilities of both teacher and paraeducator in achieving the goals must be clearly defined. Several factors need to be considered in determining these roles and responsibilities. They include experience, training, comfort level, time constraints, and knowledge levels of individual team members. Together, the teacher and other professional practitioners and the paraeducator determine what needs to be done, by whom, and by when, clearly defining roles, responsibilities, and expectations.Leadership is a critical factor for team success in achieving goals. The leader is always the teacher or another school professional who has been designated as the paraeducator’s supervisor. The supervisor’s role is similar to that of a coach. It involves assessing the paraeducator’s skills and helping the paraeducator use them to the fullest. Paraeducators contribute more effectively when they are “coached” and encouraged to make optimal use of their strengths and resources. A supervisor provides direction and ideas, helps identify alternatives, raises questions, and supplies feedback. One way to understand that role is through the mentoring model.

The Supervisor as Mentor

The teacher who mentors paraeducators shares invaluable knowledge and skills. Mentoring is a process whereby teachers and paraeducators work together to discover and develop paraeducators’ abilities, and to provide paraeducators with knowledge and skills as opportunities and needs arise. The teacher as a supervisor, mentor, and team leader should do the following:

  • Set expectations of paraeducator performance.
  • Offer challenging plans and ideas.
  • Help build self-confidence of the paraeducator.
  • Encourage ethical and professional behavior.
  • Offer support.
  • Actively listen.
  • Lead and teach by example.
  • Provide growth experiences.
  • Ask questions and give explanations.
  • Coach the paraeducator.
  • Encourage the paraeducator.
  • Inspire the paraeducator.
  • Share critical knowledge.
  • Assist, observe, and demonstrate effective instructional practice.
  • Direct and delegate effectively.
  • Give clear, concise directions.

A mentor models and demonstrates effective practice; uses good communication strategies, showing both respect and recognition; and lays the foundation for building trust in teams.

Trust and Team Success

Trust between team members is necessary to a productive working environment, and trust is built in teams by promoting open communication, providing fair leadership, and supervising with sensitivity (Pickett & Gerlach, in press).It is essential for all team members to practice open, honest communication in order to increase awareness and build cooperation. Effective communication expresses a team member’s beliefs, ideas, needs or feelings. Communication must facilitate the free flow or exchange of ideas, information, and instruction that contribute to common understanding. When ideas are shared, there is opportunity for evaluation and input that can build even better ideas. From each new experience, more ideas can be developed and tried. All team members also need to develop listening skills so that they can obtain sufficient and accurate information necessary for an effective working relationship. Successful communication results in a mutual understanding of what was sent and what was heard. This component of trust promotes loyalty and commitment to achieve the goals of the team.Closely related to this is fair leadership. A fair leader gives open, honest feedback and sets the tone for constructive dialog among team members.Complementing fairness is sensitivity. A leader who supervises with sensitivity provides team members with leadership support that acknowledges the value of each paraeducator’s contribution to team success, as well as the diverse needs of each team member.

Tying together all these elements, the following questions can be used to assess the effectiveness of teacher and paraeducator teams:

  • Do all team members understand team goals?
  • Are all team members committed to these goals?
  • Are team members concerned about and interested in each other?
  • Do team members have the emotional maturity to acknowledge and confront conflict openly?
  • Do team members listen to others with openness and understanding?
  • Do all team members value one another’s contributions?
  • Do team members feel comfortable contributing ideas and solutions?
  • Do team members recognize and reward team performance?
  • Do team members encourage and appreciate comments about team efforts?
  • Are team meetings held at a specific time?
  • Is leadership effective?
  • Is constructive feedback given freely to improve decision-making?
  • Is information shared willingly?
  • Are team members willing to communicate their concerns?

The interdependent working relationship of today’s paraeducators, teachers, and principals is often like a jigsaw puzzle. Unfortunately, they don’t have a picture on the front of a box to know what the puzzle is supposed to look like when it’s finished. Sometimes they don’t even have all the pieces. That’s why, in today’s education climate, the most successful schools operate as a team. When paraeducators, teachers, and principals team up to connect the pieces of the puzzle, students are the ultimate beneficiaries.

The Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, is a magnificent monument. Although most people remember it as Shah Jahan’s token of love for Mumtaz Mahal, many forget it took several thousand people to build the 17th-century mausoleum.

It was the combined effort of stonemasons, sculptors, dome builders, calligraphers, carpenters and designers that went into creating the white marble monument.

New A&S dean relishes ‘life in a university’

Peter John Loewen grew up in a house surrounded by books, where politics was the principal topic of conversation around the dinner table. Though his parents hadn’t gone to college, they let him know throughout his childhood that they expected him to.

Loewen didn’t just go to college: he found “a life in the university.” He said his experience as an undergraduate at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick “opened my eyes to the world.” Today he is the new Harold Tanner Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

As the leader of Cornell University’s largest college, Loewen will be part of opening the eyes of thousands of students to their possibilities. The chance to do that – while supporting A&S faculty in their research and showcasing the value of a liberal arts education — is what brought him to Cornell.

“The university has a special mission of helping students to discover their future selves, to draw a picture of who they could be, and then helping them to get there,” he said. “And at this moment, when there’s growing skepticism about the public relevance and value of universities, we need to be ready to articulate the outsized impact that universities like Cornell have to change lives and change the world.”

A Canadian education

Growing up in North Bay, Ontario, Loewen was a “keen” and “bookish” student whose dad worked in construction management; his mom worked in the insurance industry before becoming a minister in the Church of England. Once Loewen arrived at Mount Allison, “I really took to all aspects of the university, wrote for the school paper, had a radio show, was in student government,” he said. “I felt that knowing my professors as people was important, that being involved in the community around the university was important, and it was thrilling.”

He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science (with a minor in economics) in 2002 and thought about going to law school or into business when he graduated, but eventually decided to follow the advice of a professor and go to grad school in the city where he wanted to live, Montreal, at the Université de Montréal.

He joined a lab focused on electoral and voting behavior. “That was my exposure to more systematic, quantitative political science that was survey based,” he said, which allowed him to pick up skills in econometrics and cemented his plans to become a professor. “I enjoyed that kind of puzzle-solving aspect of social science.”

He received his doctoral degree in 2008, moved on to postdoctoral fellowships at the University of British Columbia and the University of California, San Diego and joined the University of Toronto in 2010.

His research and teaching interests include the future of democratic societies and the politics of technological change. He is interested in how politicians can make better decisions, in how citizens can make better choices, and how governments can address the disruption of technology and harness its opportunities. He has also studied the political and social contexts and consequences of COVID-19.

At Toronto, he saw the opportunity to be involved in leadership and public engagement as well as research. He moved up through various positions at the university, eventually being named the Robert Vipond Distinguished Professor in Democracy in the Department of Political Science. He directed the Policy, Elections and Representation Lab (PEARL) and was associate director of the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. His most recent post was director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.

On the public engagement front, Loewen was a member of a three-person nonpartisan commission redrawing federal electoral boundaries in the province of Ontario; he served as an expert on cases surrounding the conduct of elections in Canada; and he also chaired a group that advises Canada on which parties to include in federal debates.

Supporting A&S faculty and students

At Cornell, he’s excited about the opportunity to recruit and retain the stellar faculty members who are part of the A&S community and also support faculty in their research. 

“The more people you work with, the more people you can help,” Loewen said. “Part of the magic of this job is that I always enjoy getting a paper published. I just had a paper come out this week and I’m so excited about it. But if you can play a little role in helping a colleague do this, then you can multiply that thrill by dozens or hundreds. That’s tremendously fulfilling.”

Loewen’s new paper, “From Gender Gap to Gender Gaps: Bringing Nonbinary People into Political Behavior Research,” uses data from 2019 and 2021 Canadian Election Studies to explore whether nonbinary people differ from men and women in their party identification and voting behavior.

At Toronto, he also enjoyed talking with students about their journeys and plans to do that here. “They’ve got an array of things they’re interested in around campus and a different course that is their favorite. By talking with them, you can learn about their incredible diversity of experiences,” he said.

During his first few months, Loewen will be meeting with chairs of the College’s departments to learn about their strengths and their challenges. “This is a very well-governed and well-run university, so I step into the role with strong senior associate deans and a thoroughly professional structure of people around me,” he said.

Because the world is becoming more multi-disciplinary, and its problems multi-dimensional, the College is in a privileged position to bring knowledge to bear to solve those problems and make discoveries, he said.

As Loewen settles in, his family is also getting used to Ithaca. His wife, Yvette, is joining Cornell’s alumni affairs and development team as a major gifts officer and his kids, Wolfgang, 9 and Dagny, 5, are exploring the area’s outdoor spaces and getting ready to start school in Ithaca.

“We’re moving to a great town with tons of resources, a bit removed from reality, but it’s a special place,” he said with a smile. “And for kids, it’s a remarkable privilege to grow up around a university.”

One burning question remains: will Loewen continue to be a fan of Canadian hockey or change his allegiance to an American team?

“I’ve been a Pittsburgh Penguins fan since I was 5 years old,” he said with a laugh. “They were terrible when I was 5, but great by the time I was 12, and when they won their first Stanley Cup against the Minnesota North Stars, I was a pretty happy guy. I’m a Big Red hockey fan now”

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the Education Ministry (MOE) to emphasise mastering Science, Mathematics and English to support the development of the country.

He said the mastering of the three subjects is very urgent following changes in the curriculum with the existence of new branches such as artificial intelligence (AI), green energy transition, digital technology and social media.

The Finance Minister explained that mastering of the subjects among students should go hand in hand with the use of the Malay language besides stressing on moral issues that include good values ​​such as respect.

"Mastering the National Language well is in accordance with the times and mastering English well especially with the development of technology and new knowledge (also) is important.

"You (students) must also ensure that you have a strong command of English. The Malay language should be strengthened while the English language should be developed," he said when speaking during a visit to SMK Tinggi Bukit Mertajam or better known as High School Bukit Mertajam (HSBM) here Friday (Aug 30).

Also present were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim and Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad.

The Prime Minister said if the country fails to master these fields, then Malaysia will lose in the increasingly challenging world competition, especially in new technology.

He said the assimilation of knowledge, which is gaining skills and instilling moral values ​​and truth are two important aspects that should be applied in education today.

"Why these two aspects cannot be abandoned because they will cause the country to be polluted by the supervision of corrupt powers. It is due to gaining knowledge without applying moral values ​​and principles of truth. So you have to remember, explore new knowledge without leaving tradition, culture, morals and religion," he said.

He said education is an important field for the country, therefore a large allocation is given in the Madani Budget in addition to the medical field.

Meanwhile, Anwar who is also a former HSBM school student announced an allocation of RM225,000 for the construction of the surau and RM275,000 for other maintenance in the school. - Bernama
