Indian Music

Music has always been an important part of Indian life. The range of musical phenomenon in India extends from simple melodies to what is one of the most well- developed "systems" of classical music in the world. There are references to various string and wind instruments, as well as several kinds of drums and cymbals, in the Vedas. Some date the advent of the system of classical Indian music to Amir Khusro. Muslim rulers and noblemen freely extended their patronage to music. In the courts of the Mughal emperors, music is said to have flourished, and the Tansen was one of the jewels of Akbar's court.

The great poet-saints who chose to communicate in the vernacular tongues brought forth a great upheaval in north India and the Bhakti or devotional movements they led gained many adherents. The lyrics of Surdas, Tulsidas, and most particularly Kabir and Mirabai continue to be immensely popular. By the sixteenth century, the division between North Indian (Hindustani) and South Indian (Carnatic) music was also being more sharply delineated. Classical music, both Hindustani and Carnatic, may be either instrumental or vocal.

Hindustani Gharanas

There is a rich tradition of Gharanas in classical Hindustani music. The music Gharanas are also called styles. These schools or Gharanas have their basis in the traditional mode of musical training and education. Every Gharana has its own distinct features.

Hindustani School

Hindustani classical music is an Indian classical music tradition. It originated in North India around 13th and 14th centuries. In contrast to Carnatic music, the other main Indian classical music tradition from South India, the Hindustani classical music was not only influenced by ancient Hindu musical traditions and Vedic philosophy but also by the Persian elements.

Music Glossary

Achal Swaras are the fixed swaras of the seven musical notes. Sa and Pa are the achal swaras of the Indian classical music. The term Arohi, also known as Arohana and Aroh, is used to define the ascending melody in music.

Indian Music Instruments

Sitar is of the most popular music instruments of North India. The Sitar has a long neck with twenty metal frets and six to seven main cords. Below the frets of Sitar are thirteen sympathetic strings which are tuned to the notes of the Raga. A gourd, which acts as a resonator for the strings is at the lower end of the neck of the Sitar.

Carnatic Music

Carnatic music or Carnatic sangeet is the south Indian classical music. Carnatic music has a rich history and tradition and is one of the gems of world music. Carnatic Sangeet has developed in the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Indian Film Music

One of the most popular Indian music forms is the Filmi music. Hindi film industry, popularly known as Bollywood, along with Indian regional film industries, produces thousands of films a year, most of which are musicals and feature elaborate song and dance numbers.

Indian Fusion Music

Fusion is not a very old trend in Indian music. Fusion trend is said to have begun with Ali Akbar Khan's 1955 performance in the United States. Indian fusion music came into being with rock and roll fusions with Indian music in the 1960s and 1970s.

Ghazal is a common and popular form of music in Indian and Pakistan. Strictly speaking, it is not a musical form at all but a poetic recitation. However, today it is commonly conceived of as an Urdu song whose prime importance is given to the lyrics. Ghazal traces its roots in classical Arabic poetry.

India is a land of cultural diversities. Every region in India has its own form of folk music. This rich tradition of folk music is very much alive in not just rural India, but also in some metros. Though one may say that music has acquired a totally different definition with the arrival of pop culture and new age cinema, there are many who would beg to differ.

Shayari or rhyming poetry basically comprises of a couplet known as Sher. This is the way that this unique and beautiful form of poetry derives the name Sher O Shayari. Most of the forms of Shayari are found in the Urdu language. However, one may find Shero Shayari in Hindi, Punjabi, etc.

Ustad Bismillah Khan

Ustad Bismillah Khan was undoubtedly a gem that India is proud of. This Shehnai maestro of India was a Bharat Ratna awardee and also has been awarded all the top four civilian awards namely Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan along with the Bharat Ratna.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is a very famous classical musician who has acquired international fame by playing the classical instrument, Santoor. The Santoor is a trapezoid-shaped hammered dulcimer often made of walnut wood and has 72 strings, which are struck with two delicate carved wooden mallets.

Ustad Zakir Hussain

Popularly known as Tabla Maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain is the son of the renowned tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha. He was born on 9th March, 1951 and showed much interest in tabla since a very young age. This child prodigy started touring by the time he was twelve and started to perform at concerts and gain much recognition and fame.

Pandit Ravi Shankar

Pandit Ravi Shankar is a living legend who is a genius Sitar player. Born on 7th April, 1920 in Banaras, his family was a Bengali Brahmin family who named him Ravindra Shankar. Shyam Shankar, his father, was a barrister. He had an elder brother Uday Shankar who was a famous Indian classical dancer.

Indian Classical Singers

The art of classical singing is being practiced in the Indian subcontinent since ages. The art is popular, not as a form of entertainment, but as a means of connecting with the Divine Being. Infact, it is considered as one of the basic ways through which a human being can connect with God. The distinct forms of melodies sung by classical singers are known as 'Ragas'. Some of these Ragas are said to have a divine quality in them, which helps an individual in meditating. In this section, we have provided a brief biography of the famous classical singers of India.

Indian Singers

Indian subcontinent is home to some of the best talents in every field, be it music, singing, painting, acting, and so on. These famous personalities have made the country proud at not only the national, but also international level. They have taken the rich art and culture of India beyond geographical boundaries. Special mention needs to be given in case of Indian singers, who have made Indian music famous throughout the world. Their soothing voice and poignant performance has stirred many hearts. Music of India An exploration of Indian music

The music of India is as diverse as its many cultures. India has over a billion people and hundreds of dialects and languages spread across the seventh largest country in the world, but there is still an undeniable “sound” that makes Indian music unmistakable.

In this series, PBS journalist Hari Sreenivasan explores different aspects of Indian music: Indian musical instruments; the styles of music across India; and what makes Indian music unique—and where it is going.

  • Before you get started, think of what you already know about Indian music. What are some of the sounds or instruments you associate with this type of music? Have you heard music from the Arab world before? Who were the artists/groups/styles, etc? What do you remember about it? Keep these things in mind as you listen to the audio series.
  • As you listen, think about the fact that “Indian music” can mean many different things (styles, practices, etc.) and reflect on the diversity of music from India.

Lesson Content

  • For Educators

The Musical Instruments of India

Do you know which drum can speak? Or what instrument is made from a pumpkin? In this segment, we’ll learn about the many instruments that define the sounds of Indian music, and how they are played: the tabla, sitar, tanpura, sarangi, mizhavu, naal, dhol, pung…and the double-flute sitara, whose players can perform without stopping to breathe!

maximum india the styles and types of indian music.png

The Styles and Types of Indian Music

The geographic, linguistic, and cultural diversity of India contributes to a broad range of musical styles within Indian music. Certain folk styles and traditions of music important to one region may be virtually unknown in others. In this segment, we’ll learn about many common elements of Indian music—ragas, drones, improvisation, and the celebrity of being a Bollywood playback singer.

maximum india what makes indian music unique.png

What Makes Indian Music Unique?

Indian music typically contains no harmony, can be completely improvised, and is rarely written down. So how do Indian musicians manage to play together? In this segment, we’ll learn about rhythmic patterns called taal, music unique to certain communities and even times of the year, and if deep-rooted musical traditions can continue as India undergoes fast-paced growth and modernization.

Comprehension

  • What are some of the key instruments used in Indian music? Do they have counterparts/similarities to instruments in Western music?
  • What are some of the unique elements of Indian music?
  • What are some of the common musical roots of the diverse world of Indian music?

Critical Thinking

Describe the effect regional differences on Indian musical styles. Do other types of musical traditions from other parts of the world have this? Describe and then compare and contrast these practices.

What are some of the predictions the musicians make about where Indian music is going? What are some of their reasons for this?

Think of music from your own cultural tradition. Do you see some of the same shifts occurring?

Additional Indian Music Videos

The music and dance of India provide students with a window to the vibrant culture and traditions of one of the world's largest countries. As part of the Kennedy Center's maximum INDIA festival, Ragamala Dance introduces students to Bharatanatyam, a traditional dance form from south India. Combining virtuosity and aesthetic beauty, the dancers, accompanied by live music, demonstrate how basic body positions, rhythms, gestures, and facial expressions are woven into each piece. Acclaimed sitar and cello duo, Shubhendra Rao and Saskia Rao-de Haas, perform their own compositions blending European and Indian styles and also perform with Ragamala Dance. Rao-de Haas will show how she adapted the western instrument to create the 'Indian cello'—the only such instrument in existence (recorded in 2011 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC).

Featuring classical music from India, these three musicians showcase the traditional styles of Indian culture.

Charanjit Singh takes the Indian musical style of Ragas to a different dimension by combining the iconic Indian sounds with the futuristic synthesizer.

From the Kennedy Center Education Archives: A faculty member at the University of Oregon at Eugene, Sreevidhya Chandramouli plays the vina (plucked Indian lute) in the Karaikudi tradition, combining voice and vina in her performances.

As part of The Kennedy Center's 2011 Maximum India festival, this free session introduces participants to Bhangra. Instructor Rina Shah leads the class in the basic movements of Bhangra dance, while DJ Rekha introduces traditional instruments like the alghoza, chimta, tumbi (or ektar), and dhol, then demonstrates how they are incorporated into modern dance music.

Combining the roots of Bollywood music with big band style, the Bombay Royale brings a unique sound to every performance.

Performing on the anniversary of Sri Lankan independence, the Channa Upuli Dance Ensemble mixes traditional dance routines with modern influences.

As part of the Kennedy Center's Maximum India festival, a panel discussion on the portrayal of Indian women in film (Recorded in 2011 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts).

India is known for its diverse culture, food, dresses, and more. Along with these, it is also known for its music!

Classifying Indian music as a genre is problematic, as there are many forms of Indian music. Many Indian artists have been inspired by many world-renowned musicians and have combined Indian classical music  with genres from the west  like jazz, or R&B, creating some amazing music.

There are two main traditions of classical Indian music – Carnatic music (practiced predominantly in South India) and Hindustani music (found in Northern, Eastern and Western regions of India).

Raga or raag is a melodic framework for improvisations or compositions which plays an important role in Indian music theory. It is based on the natural law of vibrations. It expresses the vibrations of the laws of nature. It is a scale with a basic set of notes that a performer/artist uses to create music.

There are several hundred ragas, each with its own mood and name. There are specific ragas for different times of the day and different seasons. There are morning ragas, afternoon ragas, evening ragas, night ragas, spring ragas, and more.

Hindustani :Indian Classical Music

Hindustani music comes from Northern India Southern India has a different tradition, called Carnatic music

Master / Student tradition Student / Guru

Hindustani music is built on 3 elements: Drone Tala: rhythmRaga: scales/melody

DroneThis is the basis for all harmony, a constant or repeating tone.Usually played on a tambura, or a harmonium or shruti box

Tala or TaalThis is the rhythmic basis of the music. It is a repeating pattern, similar to a rhythmic ostinato. The constant beat is called a MANTRA – over this, there are rhythmic patterns known as BOLS They are often played on the TABLA drums

Tala or TaalEach Tala is unique, with different patterns and emphasis Often, the Tala contains clapping. When a beat is missing, players wave their hand to indicate an empty beat (Khali)

Tala or TaalEach Tala can be divided into sections called VIBHAGS – they are roughly equivalent to BARS in Western music. Vibhags can often be uneven, combining patterns for emphasis. In this example, the emphasis is 4+2+3+3

Raga or RaagA Raga is the rough equivalent of a SCALE in Western music – it is a pattern of notes used to create a particular mood. There are hundreds of raga, each with their own name and mood/association. A raga has a ascending and a descending pattern, usually different.

Raga or RaagRag Yaman (early evening raga) From this Raga, you can create a fixed, short melody called a GAT

Structure in Hindustani Music • North Indian classical music is built around improvised sections of music. It usually has 3 sections: • The Alap • The Jor • The Jhalla

The Alap 1st section : The Alap The Alap is a slow, meditative introduction which sets the mood of the piece. A drone is used as accompaniment The notes of the Rag are explored, and the rhythm is free - no regular beat. The notes usually move from low to high, and there is a slight speed up as you move towards the next section…

The Jor 2nd section : The Jor The Jor is another improvised section, usually at a moderate tempo. The drone still provides accompaniment. A regular pulse is introduced here, although is it not usually complex.

The Jhalla 3rd section : The Jhalla The Jhalla is the final section, and it is marked by the entrance of TABLA playing the Tal. It also begins with a GAT - a fixed melody. The Gat forms the basis for more improvisations, getting steadily more complex and faster. The tempo increases to an exciting pace, and the Gat is usually repeated to finish the performance.

Made in late 1830's (1835-1838) Chopin -Born in Poland 1810- -Died in Paris 1849- -Virtuoso Pianist- Romantic composer famous for piano music Music Presentation The Prelude No. 15 in D-flat major, known as the "Raindrop" Prelude, is the longest of the twenty-four that Chopin wrote. The weather during their stay in Majorca was apparently very wet and Chopin is said to have composed the piece there where the note repeated throughout the work represents the raindrops, hence the nickname. However, Chopin did not give it this nickname. The idea came from George Sand who told of the sound of dripping water falling on the roof where they were staying in Majorca. Sostenuto is an Italian term used by Chopin. It means a passage of music that is to be played in a sustained or prolonged manner. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/music/western_tradition/chopin2.shtml Although Chopin was born in Poland, he later settled in Paris. He had a famous love affair with the French novelist Amantine Dupin, best known by her pseudonym, George Sand. Frédéric Chopin Chopin's 24 Preludes, Op. 28, are a set of short pieces for the piano, one in each of the twenty-four keys, originally published in 1839 and dedicated to Joseph Christoph Kessler, a composer of piano studies during Chopin's time. Ten years earlier, Kessler had dedicated his own set of 24 Preludes, Op. 31, to Chopin. Although the term prelude is generally used to describe an introductory piece, Chopin's stand as self-contained units, each portraying a specific idea or emotion. Chopin wrote them between 1835 and 1839, partly at Valldemossa, Majorca, where he spent the winter of 1838–39 and where he had fled with George Sand (His lover) and her children to escape the damp Paris weather. Like many short piano pieces of the Romantic period, this prelude is in ternary form – a three-part form (ABA) where the second A section is the same as, or very similar to, the first A section. Chopin composed during the Romantic period (roughly the 19th century). Music of the Romantic period was highly emotional and expressive with strong lyrical melodies and rich harmony. Most Romantic composers, including Schubert, Brahms and Liszt, wrote short piano pieces. Nearly all of Chopin’s compositions are for piano. Raindrop Prelude (Background) The main melody is repeated three times; the melody in the middle, however, is much more dark and dramatic. The key signature switches between D-flat major and C-sharp minor. This prelude is one of the 24 Chopin preludes. Usually performed between five and seven minutes in length, the sostenuto is also the longest of the preludes.

Transcript: Music Final Powerpoint By: Zack Horvath Song Information and Background Song Information and Background Michael Jackson is the composer and lyricist of the song Billie Jean. Billie Jean is considered an R&B classic. The instruments playing are drum set, drum machine, electric bass, guitar, synthesizer, strings, and voice are present. Instruments are introduced at the beginning of new sections, such as the pre-chorus and chorus. Arrangement and Instruments Composed and Larger work The song was composed on January 2, 1983. Although it wasn't part of any larger work such as a play or film. Micheal Jackson's music videos were in itself the first to be called "Mini-movies" as Billie Jean's music video lasted about 5 minutes long Micheal Jackson himself is a large historic Figure. Michael Jackson is one of the biggest influencers, motivators, and success stories to ever be. He still holds major records, even years after his death. Micheal Jackson created a language through his music that allowed people of all races to look at the world in a different perspective. He was one of the first artists of his time to use his platform to hit these issues head on. His lyrics, dancing, and music videos, known as “mini movies”, used emotion and metaphors that helped advocate for things like world peace, and racism. "Billie Jean" and “Thriller" were two of the first music videos by an African-American artist to air on MTV. Micheal Jackson paved the way for other African-American artists such as Prince, and Whitney Houston to receive air time on MTV, as well. Historic Significance Inspiration and Meaning This song is about a girl who claimed Jackson was the father of her child. Jackson based it on a woman who used to stalk him, writing him letters about a son she thought was his. Jackson rarely spoke about this woman, but he had a very hard time dealing with this unwanted attention and became more reclusive as a result. The song was his way of expressing his feelings without addressing her directly. Form The form of this song is divided into several sections, which we see a lot through Michael Jackson's music. We first start of with an introductions, simply giving the beat. We then go to the first and second verse, the pre chorus, verse 3 and 4, pre chorus, chorus, interlude, chorus then lastly, the coda. The shift between chorus and verses helps differentiate the harmony and melody Michael Jackson was simply ahead of his time, captivated anyone who listened. he revolutionized his time as a artists in his own ways. He leave a huge impact on the industry and how it’s viewed today all while influencing some other amazing artists that will forever continue to change. He wasn't afraid to change the view of modern music reforming any strict technical rules, and i believe we need more musicians like that today. Meaning to Me Rhythm Rhythm The rhythm from the beginning is a simple constant beat. After about two measures of the rhythm being played on the drums. We then enter the bass line and Micheal's voice to create the melody. The bass guitar has the most activity as it sets the tone hitting the beat to create the rhythm to contrast with Michael's voice. The bass gives clarity to the low strick beats created. It has a a tempo of 116 BPM and a time signature of 4/4. It's a mix of big and small beats such as quarter notes and eight notes. Melody Melody Throughout the song Michel creates and carries the melody with his reverb voice throughout the verses of the song. This song has a wide range of melody usage as the instrumental use tends to stay at the same regarding range, but Micheal's pitch ranges from high and low voice Micheal likes to create vocal interjections to create transitions this allows phase breakdowns allowing a transition from melody to harmony from the verses to the coras Harmony Harmony The harmony is found mostly within the chorus. I would consider Harmony to be simple. It has a way of being a simple harmony, but also very captivated. We can clearly identify 6 cords in the song and stays in the same key of f# Each verse starts at a mezzo piano and increases gradually to a mezzo forte. We can also hear a small crescendo to forte from the pre-chorus to the chorus. Dynamics Dynamics Billie Jean Music Video
