experimental film festivals to submit

I have officially embraced the realm of experimental filmmaking, and have totally fallen in love with the process. In 2022 I shot one narrative short film called Stuffer , and two different experimental short films— Dear Kevin , and TBD, in post-production now. The processes are so different being narrative and experimental that they kind of feel like different art forms entirely. Of course, they have similarities—there’s the structure, the camera, the pitch deck—but there are also so many differences.

Where my narrative project Stuffer included a full cast, cinematographer shooting on 4k, colorist, and heaps of time spent perfecting an edit (among other things), my experimental films are mostly just me—save for the actor on screen. I shot mine on Super 8 film, then edited and did all of the production myself. In Dear Kevin , I had one actress on screen, then recorded the non-linear voice-over myself at my kitchen table. I did all of the sound design, then had someone make the final mix.

There are infinite ways to make an experimental film, and in fact, there is no wrong way, which I think is partly what makes it very appealing to me. That’s also why I wasn’t sure if Dear Kevin was the type of project that I could submit to film festivals. I mean sure I love it, I wrote it, and it means something to me. I got into the magic creative flow while making it and I’m proud of how it turned out. But would anyone else want to watch it?

I decided to find out by first sharing it with friends and family and next submitting it to some film festivals that specifically focus on or have categories for experimental filmmaking. Here are some of the experimental film festivals that I found.

Crossroads is San Francisco Cinematheque’s annual film festival, which has been running since 2010. But the San Francisco Cinematheque itself was founded back in 1961 by filmmaker Bruce Baillie. It’s still considered the Bay Area’s premier venue for “avant-garde/experimental, underground and personally expressive film, video and performance work.”

As far as I know, you can only submit to Crossroads on their actual website as opposed to sites like FilmFreeway.

Experimental Forum

Experimental Forum is a festival based in Los Angeles featuring “moving image[s] from auteur filmmakers and innovative video artists from around the globe.”

They welcome experimental cinema (abstract, narrative or documentary), video art works, essay films, artists’ moving image and media art, and documentary and narrative films that “seek to expand, redefine or reconfigure the means and ends of their respective fields.” The festival has been running for seven years.

Blow-Up Arthouse Film Fest

Chicago’s Blow-Up Arthouse Film Fest was named after the Michelangelo Antonioni’s film “Blow-Up”. They feature chosen works in categories like narrative, documentary films, shorts, animations, experimental films, and student work.

Their goal: to introduce more people to the arthouse film.

The Vast Lab is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit creative collaboration. It’s a creative incubator run by artists in: V isual,  A udio,  S tory, and  T echnology Arts. They hold a weekend of experimental films once a year, and accept submissions via FilmFreeway.

Short Film Factory

The Short Film Factory is an experimental film festival that is held in Romania. They have a monthly contest, where awarded projects are then shown live at Foto Summer Garden, an open-air cinema in Transylvania. (So cool.)

This is the first festival I heard back from during my own submission process. My short film Dear Kevin was awarded “Best Imagination.”

Torino Underground Cinefest

The Torino Underground Cinefest has a category for experimental film, as well as slow (ambient) content, which seems to be rising in popularity. (At least in the sense of being identified as an art form in a more mainstream fashion. Is that the same thing as rising in popularity? I don’t know. Anyway.)

Torino is of course in Italy, so if you get into the festival you have a really great excuse to go.

Boundless Film Festival

The London-based Boundless Film Festival isn’t specifically focused on experimental film, but they accept short film content of any type, including experimental film. This is an online-only festival “dedicated to celebrating bold, original, provocative and thought-provoking shorts.”

Video Hackers

Video Hackers—another Italy-based film festival—has no genre requirements for their multi-days showcase of cinema and multimedia arts. In addition to short films, they accept animation, and micro shorts, which are categorized as under 90 seconds long.

FENDA-Experimental Festival of Film Arts

FENDA is “an international encounter dedicated to experimental film arts.” It’s held yearly in Brazil. This is a newer festival. From their website:

“FENDA is interested in experimental and avant-garde audiovisual work in a broad sense. We can adopt a definition made by experimental pioneer Germaine Dulac in 1932: ‘any film whose technique, used for a renewed expressiveness of image and sound, breaks with established traditions to search out, in the strictly visual and auditory domain, new emotional chords’. We want works that other people might consider ‘too weird’, ‘too small’, or ‘too difficult’. We especially want those works that might raise the question: ‘Is this cinema?’.

I will keep you updated on my own progress, and feel free to loop me in on yours too! Do you have other experimental film festivals that you would suggest submitting to? Let me know!

When it comes to showcasing creative and innovative cinema, the best art film festival for celebrating experimental filmmaking can make all the difference for both filmmakers and audiences alike. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore five top film festivals that are renowned for their commitment to experimental cinema, providing unique platforms for artists to share their work with the world.

Founded by actor and director Robert Redford in 1978, the Sundance Film Festival started as a modest event to showcase American independent films. Over the years, it has evolved into a global platform for cutting-edge cinema, including some of the best art films that celebrate experimental filmmaking. The festival has played a significant role in the careers of renowned directors like Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, and Darren Aronofsky, who all debuted their early works at Sundance.

If you're considering submitting your experimental film to Sundance, here's what you need to know:

  • Submissions typically open in May with deadlines in August and September, depending on the category.
  • You can submit your film through their official website or partner platforms like FilmFreeway.

Where To Submit Your Experimental Film?

Photo of Mehdi Balamissa

We have rounded up a selection of the best film festivals in Europe to present your experimental films.

Experimental film, experimental cinema or avant-garde cinema is a mode of artistic filmmaking that rigorously re-evaluates cinematic conventions and explores non-narrative forms and alternatives to traditional narratives or methods of working. If you are into pushing artistic boundaries, we have curated a selection of film festivals that would be ideal for showcasing your experimental works .

While many of the major international film festivals ( Berlinale , IFF Rotterdam , RIDM …) exhibit an interest in experimental cinema, we’ve curated a list of festivals that specifically dedicate themselves to this avant-garde form of filmmaking . These festivals provide vital platforms for experimental filmmakers to showcase their visionary works and engage with audiences who appreciate the innovative and boundary-pushing nature of experimental cinema . Here are some of the most prominent festivals around the world that focus on experimental films:

Through the length of the festival, we want to make it possible for participants, both performers and audiences, to get to know each other and create connections that last for a long time.

Stuttgarter Filmwinter – Festival for Expanded Media (Germany)

For over 30 years, the Festival has been devoted to crossing the border between cinema and media art with an adventurous international programme comprising films, workshops, Expanded Media exhibition and performances for people of all ages. The Festival’s core are the international competitions for short film, Media in Space and Network Culture – flanked by a comprehensive programme. Every year, the Filmwinter Stuttgart has a new motto that is reflected in the design, supporting programme and the whole aura of the festival.

  • February 20, 2019

Short film festivals are a great way to find funding, gain exposure, and network in the film industry . In fact, most filmmakers start their careers making shorts and entering film competitions. Doing so allows you to practice your craft without spending lots of money.

Film festivals can also pave the way for your film career. By winning one, you can then approach studios to fund a feature film or even win a major industry award.

Best Short Film Festivals

Short film festivals run throughout the year. However, new ones are always appearing, often from some of the most surprising sources. Let’s look at some of the best ones that you can enter this year.

US Short Film Festivals

Sundance short film festival.

  • Deadline:  August
  • Festival:  January
  • Fee:  $65

Sundance is the longest-running short film festival, having been active for over 40 years. It has many categories, including one for US shorts and another for world short films.

You can enter a short film in any genre, but it must run under 50 minutes in length. There are also no restrictions on short films shown at other festivals and online.

Being accepted into the prestigious Sundance Film Festival shows your talent for filmmaking. Award winners will receive plenty of promotion for their short films. It’s also an Oscar-worthy festival, meaning you can submit your film to compete for an Oscar.

Plus, you will also be invited to attend networking events with prominent producers and studios, giving you the chance to sell your next film project.

So, a major festival like this is a good idea if you tackle a feature film after your short film. Still, let’s look at some smaller festivals and other short film competitions.

Boston Short Film Festival

  • Deadline:  February
  • Festival:  July
  • Fee:  $25

The Boston Short Film Festival wants to empower the next generation of artists. This festival has been running for nine years and aims to screen up to a hundred films yearly.

The festival focuses on unconventional, unusual, and underground cinema. So, if you have something a little different to show, then this one is for you.

Enter your short film, up to 55 minutes in all genres, including animation. You are also fine to enter your short film if it has had it shown at other festivals.

All selected filmmakers will receive The Tarkovski Grant, a film festival submission fee package with an average value of about $500.

In addition, all films enter Producer’s Night, an opportunity for independent filmmakers to have their work screened by a group of Hollywood producers. For many directors, it could mean their ticket to the mainstream.

Shore Scripts Feature Contest

  • Fee:  $40

This film competition is for scriptwriters and the selection is based entirely on your script. Feature films, TV pilots, and short films all have their own competitions and prizes.

Enter your script, it’s as simple as that. Every script is read by two separate readers, all of whom have won either an Oscar, BAFTA, Emmy, or Golden Globe.

Scripts should be between 2-30 pages and written in size 12 courier, formatted like a professional script .

If you are truly the next Aaron Sorkin and your script wins, then you can look forward to receiving $10-15k. In addition to free camera equipment rental from Arri, full production support from Shore, and some online scriptwriting subscriptions.

What makes this competition worthy is that it suits both writers and writer/directors. If you’re a writer, they’ll even provide a director and team to help you make the film.

Hot Docs is an organization dedicated to advancing and celebrating the art of documentary filmmaking . They do this by holding programs, classes, and contests for filmmakers.

'Conclave,' 'The End' 'Hard Truths'

Two Netflix Originals and new movies from Mike Leigh , Joshua Oppenheimer , Gia Coppola and Edward Berger will vie for San Sebastian’s top Golden Shell this September.

The festival features a main competition that is stronger than usual on both bigger-name directors and ‘A’ list stars, such as Tilda Swinton in Oppenheimer’s “The End,” Jamie Lee Curtis and Pamela Anderson in Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” and the ensemble cast of Berger’s “Conclave” that includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini.

Festival in Focus: Revamped Edinburgh Film Festival Launches With Strong Competition Strands Focused On World Premiere Titles & Attracting New Audiences

All official communications from the 2024 Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) organizers have described this year’s edition as “revamped” or “revitalized” — a pointed note to signpost that new management is at the helm. The declaration is perhaps odd for an event that has often trumpeted its heritage, self-styling as the world’s “oldest continuously running film festival.” For the past two years, however, Edinburgh has been at the center of a significant period of turbulence within the Scottish film industry.

Edinburgh Film Festival: Alex Garland And 'Trainspotting' Producer Andrew Macdonald To Headline Industry Programme

The EIFF brand, however, was retrieved by Screen Scotland, a national funding body, allowing for a scaled-back 2023 edition under temporary programme director Kate Taylor. Veteran Scottish producer Andrew Macdonald ( Trainspotting ) was later drafted in to lead a new executive board responsible for the festival, and their first move in the post was a popular one. Paul Ridd , a well-regarded, long-time acquisitions exec at Picturehouse Cinemas, was named festival director.

“We’re inheriting this very illustrious, complicated history of 70-plus years of the festival,” Ridd tells Deadline from his new base in the Scottish capital. “The festival has been through some difficult times recently. It’s been down to us, our board, and my team to make it feel like we’re truly reigniting this thing and making people feel confident that what we’re delivering is an exciting event that is sustainable for the future.”

“We had 2500 films submitted to us, including shorts and features,” Ridd explains. “Hundreds of films were also submitted directly to us through our relationships with producers and filmmakers.”

The festival’s international feature competition, now dubbed the Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence, will screen 10 films, all world premieres — a strategic decision by Ridd and his programming team.

“We set out early on with the principle that all our competing shorts and features would need to be world premiers,” Ridd says.

“There’s two reasons for that. One is that we want our audience to feel like a good portion of the selection from competition to out-of-competition is completely new work that hasn’t been screened elsewhere. So there’s a sense that when you see a film with us, you are potentially some of the first public eyeballs to see it. And then, from an industry perspective, it is useful when attracting press and industry folk.”

experimental film contest

The competition features a bold mix of international arthouse fare alongside what could be described as more traditional, audience-friendly movies — a mix that could also be used to describe Ridd’s house style during his tenure at Picturehouse. Titles include Nina Conti’s comedy Sunlight , Kurdish political documentary All The Mountains Give, and American filmmaker Kelsey Taylor’s To Kill A Wolf , a reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood set in snowy Oregon.

All competition premieres and headline screenings will take place at Cameo 1, the 250-seat main screen at the Picturehouse-run Cameo Cinema on Home Street. The Cameo will serve as the festival’s hub. The century-old cinema is one of the original EIFF venues and has hosted some of the festival’s most seminal moments, including a 1953 lecture by Orson Welles. Films will then go on to screen at what the festival has described as “non-traditional cinema spaces” across the city like the Summerhall arts venue and Inspace, a contemporary events and exhibition space tied to the University of Edinburgh. The new venues are part of the festival’s new partnership with the Fringe Festival, the Scottish capital’s historic performing arts event, which we announced back in March.

“With something like our opening film, The Outrun , we’re thrilled that Saoirse and the film team will be coming. So they will first go and screen the film at the Cameo,” Ridd explains. “And then they will move around our additional satellite venues, Summerhall, Inspace, and 50 George Square. So they’ll be showing the film in radically different spaces on the same night.”

Those plans will come with obvious logistical concerns, particularly in a busy, cobble-stoned city in Edinburgh. But they also best display the ambition at the center of Ridd’s “revitalization” project.

“We’re trying to make it so that as much as possible, every film in our selection screens once in each venue,” Ridd says.

“Many of the competition films are coming from completely new voices and don’t have the obvious traditional hooks,” Ridd explains, “But there are titles like Sunlight by Nina Conti, a very well-established Fringe performer. So there are hooks there within even the competition itself. Plus there are films like Lilies Not for Me that have cast members that are familiar from Netflix shows and Prime shows.”

Ridd continues: “Around the competition, we’ve also got films that have those hooks like The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan. We’ve also got stuff like Between the Temples , which stars Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane. Then there’s Armand , which has Renate Reinsve from The Worst Person In The World . And because of the renewed Fringe collaboration we consciously targeted films that feature stars who are familiar with the Fringe comedy scene, so you have stuff like Alice Lowe’s film Time Stalker. ”

The titles Ridd mentions here will be screened in the festival’s out-of-competition slots. There are 18 out-of-competition films, the most high-profile being A24’s Sing Sing, starring Colman Domingo, which screens as a European premiere, and Sky Cinema’s The Radley’s , a world premiere title starring Kelly Macdonald and Damian Lewis. Adapted from Matt Haig’s novel by comedian Jo Brand and writer Talitha Stevenson, the pic tells the story of a seemingly ordinary family with a dark secret: they are vampires. They choose not to drink blood despite their natural cravings until one day they are exposed.

“I was so thrilled that they agreed to give us the world premiere,” Ridd says of Sky Cinema, which is releasing the film in the UK. “We’ve received so much trust and goodwill from the industry with big films like this coming to us and having a discussion about world premieres. It’s been incredibly encouraging because we’re a new entity.”

experimental film contest

Alongside the crowdpleasing titles, there are also some challenging films out-of-competition like the 2024 Cannes Un Certain Regard main prize winner Black Dog by Guan Hu and Bogancloch , the latest from experimental British artist Ben Rivers. The same can be said for the festival’s inaugural midnight madness section, which opens and closes with two buzzy UK premieres, Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus and Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance . Other Midnight Madness films include Kit Redstone and Arran Shearing’s Rotterdam title King Baby and Damian Mc Carthy’s Oddity .

The winner of the Sean Connery Prize will take home £50,000. The award, rebranded earlier this year, is a collaboration between the festival and the Sean Connery Foundation.

“Jason Connery has a strong relationship with the festival going back years,” Ridd explains. “And, of course, his father had a strong relationship with the festival.”

Edinburgh’s new shorts competition, now named after legendary editor Thelma Schoonmaker, carries a £15,000 cash prize. Both competitions, however, will be decided by an audience vote rather than a jury.

“It was important for me personally for the prizes to be awarded by audience votes rather than by jury because it’s a vote of confidence in the film,” Ridd says.

“We’re trying to give all of these films the best possible opportunity to be seen for the first time by audiences in the UK, with the hope and belief that they go on to have a life beyond the festival, in cinemas or at home or wherever it is.”

Does a Fighter Pilot Have to Be Human?

Artificial intelligence proves it can dogfight. What’s next?

Mark Strauss

A sleek jet aircraft painted red, white, and black flies over an air base in the desert.

Science fiction took another leap toward becoming science fact this past spring, when an aircraft piloted by artificial intelligence (AI) engaged in a dogfight against a human-piloted F-16.

“The potential for autonomous air-to-air combat has been imaginable for decades, but the reality has remained a distant dream up until now,” said Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall. “This is a transformational moment.”

The unprecedented achievement is the result of a collaboration between the U.S. Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) that has, over the decades, overseen the development of transformative technologies such as the computer mouse, GPS, and even the internet itself. DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution program pitted an X-62A Variable In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA) against an F-16 to begin evaluating autonomous AI systems that could move beyond computer simulations and soar into the air. The scenario harks back to when earlier generations of programmers taught computers to play chess—except now the chess pieces are $60 million aircraft flying at one another at 1,200 mph. The objective of the AI flight exercise wasn’t to explicitly create a robot fighter pilot. Rather, programmers see air-to-air combat as a highly complex problem for an artificial intelligence to solve, pushing machine learning to new limits. The AI team made over 100,000 lines of flight-critical software changes across 21 test flights that began last September, culminating with the successful air-to-air combat demonstration in mid-April. The aerial battle began with defensive maneuvers before switching to offensive nose-to-nose engagements.

The Air Force is planning for an AI-enabled fleet of more than 1,000 unpiloted warplanes, the first of them operating by 2028. But officials stress that there will always be human oversight when weapons are involved. During tests, for example, the X-62A is flown with onboard safety pilots, who have the ability to disengage the AI.
