7th Grade Worksheets & Activities

Welcome to our 7th grade worksheets! As the middle school learners make their way through another year, they are journeying deeper into their skills and content matter.

In particular, seventh grade learners must write confidently about themes, nonfiction, and analyze readings to understand how they fit together and what they reveal. At this grade level, learners will need to show more command when organizing their writing and citing details to support their ideas in more extended responses. They will be writing with multi-page responses. These learners will also need to think more critically about their speaking and listening skills as they aim to meet the rising challenges of upper K-12 schoolwork.

Some teachers hate 7th grade students. They claim that 7th graders are awkward, annoying, and hormonal. That may be true. Nonetheless, I've always loved my 7th grade classes more than any of my other groups. (Don't tell my 8th graders.) I love my 7th grade students because they are helpful, malleable, and are still eager to please their teachers (for the most part). You can reason with them. They can be hilarious. And they know that they're going to see you around next year, so they're not going to do anything too crazy. This page has all of my reading worksheets that were written at or around the 7th grade level. I used this awesome website to determine the readability scores of each of these worksheets, but you'll want to read and approve them yourself before giving them to your students. If you teach students who are reading at or around the 7th grade level, you've come to the right place. Surely you can find something on this page to enrich your students' literacy skills.

Those 7th graders are a handful, but if you keep giving them work like this, you'll keep them busy while they learn. Everybody wins. Students love completing work that they know how to do. If you teach them these concepts, and then give them practice that is written at their reading level, they'll be chugging through these assignments. I can't wait to hear about your success using the activities on this page. If you have any to share, post them in the comments below. I also accept corrections, suggestions, and critiques. Please update the printing layout for the online test feature. The layout is perfect as a PDF and when taking the test online, but the layout when printing the results is scattered and not very orderly which makes it hard to underdstand. Is it possible to make the layout for the online tests results the same as the PDF version? If so, that would be great. Thank you!

What Do Students Learn in 7th Grade Math?

In seventh grade, students extend and apply many of the concepts they've learned in sixth grade in order to discover new types of relationships, new and efficient ways to solve problems, and new ways to analyze and look at data and associations. Students will investigate proportional relationships and use this understanding to solve real-world problems involving discounts, interest, taxes, and scale drawings. Building off of their sixth-grade understanding of integers, seventh-grade students will apply the properties of operations to all rational numbers in order to efficiently and thoughtfully work with the number system, including how it applies to expressions and equations. Lastly, students will learn to question what it means to be a representative sample of a population and how to effectively compare different populations.

Pacing Guide

Course Material Overview

Proportional Relationships

Students deepen their understanding of ratios to investigate proportional relationships, in order to solve multi-step, real-world ratio problems using new strategies that rely on proportional reasoning.

Operations with Rational Numbers

Students extend the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to include positive and negative rational numbers, and build fluency with evaluating numerical expressions.

Numerical and Algebraic Expressions

Students manipulate expressions into different equivalent forms as they expand, factor, add, and subtract numerical and algebraic expressions and face authentic real-world, multi-step problems.

Equations and Inequalities

Students solve equations and inequalities with rational numbers, and encounter real-world situations that can be modeled and solved using equations and inequalities.

Percent and Scaling

Students expand on and apply their understanding of percentages by studying percent increase and decrease, percent applications such as tax and simple interest, and scaled geometric drawings.

Students apply algebraic and proportional reasoning skills to investigate angle relationships, circle measurements, uniqueness of triangles, and solid figure application problems.

Students investigate how to use sampling to make inferences about larger populations of interest, engaging in hands-on activities to select random samples and to compare samples of different sizes.

Probability

Students have their first encounter with probability, as they develop their understanding of probability through calculating theoretical probabilities and designing and running their own simulations.

How Do Students Build 7th Grade Math Skills Across Units?

In Unit 1, Proportional Relationships , students begin the year by recalling familiar concepts of ratios and unit rates from sixth grade. They work with more complicated unit rates involving fractions and investigate the concept of proportionality. Using tables, equations, and graphs, students compare proportional relationships and nonproportional relationships and the contexts under which they arise.

In Unit 2, Operations with Rational Numbers , students learn that the properties of operations they use with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals apply to all rational numbers, including negative numbers. Developing a strong conceptual understanding and procedural ability to work with rational numbers is critical to students’ algebra progression in middle school. These standards are covered early in the year in order for students to continue to hone them and apply them throughout the year.

In Unit 3, Numerical and Algebraic Expressions , and Unit 4, Equations and Inequalities , students use their number sense skills learned in the previous unit to evaluate expressions, generate equivalent expressions, and efficiently solve equations and inequalities. Students become increasingly more adept at modeling situations, decontextualizing situations in order to represent them algebraically, and then recontextualizing to interpret their meaning.

Unit 5, Percent and Scaling , reengages students with the concept of proportionality from Unit 5, but this time they investigate and solve problems involving percent and scale drawings. This unit is placed later in the year, rather than immediately after Unit 1, in order for students to utilize and apply the skills they’ve learned in Units 2–4.

In Unit 6, Geometry , students further their study of measuring two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures by finding volume, surface area, and angle measures. They study triangles in depth and are introduced to constructions which they will revisit in high school geometry.

Lastly, students end the year with two units, Unit 7, Statistics , and Unit 8, Probability . In their Statistics unit, students find and use statistical measures to compare distributions and make inferences about populations. As students engage in probability concepts, they lean on their understandings of ratio and proportions learned earlier in the year.

Note that this course follows the 2017 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, which include the Common Core Standards for Mathematics.

7th Grade Math FAQs

What math skills do students learn in 7th grade.

In seventh grade, students extend their work with ratios to include varied types of proportional relationships, apply the properties of operations to all rational numbers, and deepen their understanding of equations and inequalities.

What Common Core Math Standards do students focus on in 7th grade?

The major work of the course focuses on the following Common Core State Standards:

  • 7.RP.A Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
  • 7.NS.A Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.
  • 7.EE.A Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
  • 7.EE.B Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

What are the fluency expectations and culminating standards for 7th grade math?

  • 7.EE.4.a: Solve word problems leading to equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q)= r, where p, q, and r are specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?
  • 7.EE.3: Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation. (Culminating)
  • 7.NS.1: Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram. (Culminating)
  • 7.NS.2: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers. (Culminating)

7th Grade Writing Assignments Worksheets

Related ela standard: w.7.10.

When you really want to know if students have internalized a work or concept having them writing extended assignments is a must. It is easy to answer a question but hitting on higher order thinking skills and sustaining a long-term argument is a different thing entirely. These types of activities take a large window of time to complete. They are also a good deal of writing endurance that 7th grade students are just starting to build upon. These worksheets will give students extended writing tasks to help them master the art of essay writing and build their ability to communicate in written form.

Extended Writing Worksheets To Print:

Talking about Technology - Should robots just run everything? What are they missing? It is all about writing in one sitting and done.

Writing In Stages - This is a great process to get yourself in. This is a three day writing project. Choose one of the pictures below as inspiration for a story.

Writing in a Single Session - Choose between the topic of privacy and homeschooling and write a piece in one sitting that fully answers the questions that you are presented with.

Prewriting Worksheet - See if you can bring yourself to use this sheets often and always. Think of a significant event in your life, and write one sentence that summarizes the experience.

Research | Reflection | Revision - Who has a past that you deeply admire? Choose someone that is no longer living who interests you or that you admire. You will be researching that person and writing their biography. The biography should be at least two typed pages long.

An Exploration of Poetry - There are many ways to write a poem. This might be a new form for you. m. Depending on how you use language, you can say exactly what you mean, in as many or as few lines so as you like, or you can NOT say exactly what you mean at all, but only hint at it using image words and sound words to create pictures or feelings in the reader.

What Happened? - Imagine that you arrive home to find that there has been a fire at your house while you have been at school and your parents have been at work.

Dear Principal, - If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? Would you abolish homework? Increase the lunch period? Shorten the school day? Think about how what you want to change would affect the student body, both in the present and in the future.

What Makes Good Parents? - People can be very, very different from one another, and there are all kinds of ways to be a good parent. What qualities do you think make a good parent? Of those qualities, which are non‐negotiable, and which are optional, nice to have qualities?

Hand To The Face Prompt - Describe what you think is happening in this picture. This guy is not having such a great day. Tell us all about it.

Creativity Prompts - Are order and creativity mutually exclusive? Are creative people naturally messy? Does neatness stunt creativity? Explain your position on the topic.

Mapping Family Constellations - For this project you will be creating a description of the constellations within your family, and compiling them into a booklet.

Read | Reflect | Write - The world has changed an enormous amount in the last 50 years. Think about it, then do a little research to help give both the prompt and your thoughts some context. Use what you learned from your research to answer the prompt.

Using History as a Setting - Conduct whatever research you feel is necessary. Then write at least one full page answering the prompt.

Rock On - Picture Prompt - Describe what you think is happening in this picture. This is a picture of a concert scene.

How to Approach Extended Writing Assignments

Extended writing assignments involve research and critical reading from multiple sources of information and ideas and the development of persistent argument within a fixed amount of time. It is also known as independent writing. Students are usually given extended writing assignments by their teachers to test their writing skills. Though the topic to write on is quite easy and students usually enjoy writing on it but the main problem faced but a majority of students is their inability to plan an extended writing assignment properly. Given below are some tips that will help one a lot in writing extended assignments:

Understanding The Topic

First thing to do while planning an extended writing assignment is to read the topic carefully. Try to grab the topic correctly and then make a list of as many words as possible that relate to that topic. As extended writing is time based, making a list will ensure that you do not have to spend time in thinking about the related words while writing the body of assignment.

Writing The Body of Extended Assignment

In the second step, decide the main idea and the topic sentence of your material and write them down. Include additional information that will explain your main idea and the topic. This explanation will be the first paragraph of your extended writing assignment. Second paragraph will provide other necessary information and the third will sum up your main points.

Summarizing

After writing the body of your assignment, write a sentence or a small paragraph that summarizes the main point and restates your topic sentence. This paragraph marks an end to your extended written assignment.

After you are done writing the whole assignment, take some time to revise and review it. Make sure that your extended writing assignment includes all the necessary information with correct punctuation and spellings and is free of errors.
