Thesis Title: Examples and Suggestions from a PhD Grad

When you’re faced with writing up a thesis, choosing a title can often fall to the bottom of the priority list. After all, it’s only a few words. How hard can it be?!

In the grand scheme of things I agree that picking your thesis title shouldn’t warrant that much thought, however my own choice is one of the few regrets I have from my PhD . I therefore think there is value in spending some time considering the options available.

In this post I’ll guide you through how to write your own thesis title and share real-world examples. Although my focus is on the PhD thesis, I’ve also included plenty of thesis title examples for bachelor’s and master’s research projects too.

Hopefully by the end of the post you’ll feel ready to start crafting your own!

Why your thesis title is at least somewhat important

It sounds obvious but your thesis title is the first, and often only, interaction people will have with your thesis. For instance, hiring managers for jobs that you may wish to apply for in the future. Therefore you want to give a good sense of what your research involved from the title.

Many people will list the title of their thesis on their CV, at least for a while after graduating. All of the example titles I’ve shared below came from my repository of academic CVs . I’d say roughly 30% of all the academics on that page list their thesis title, which includes academics all the way up to full professor.

Your thesis title could therefore feature on your CV for your whole career, so it is probably worth a bit of thought!

My suggestions for choosing a good thesis title

• Make it descriptive of the research so it’s immediately obvious what it is about! Most universities will publish student theses online ( here’s mine! ) and they’re indexed so can be found via Google Scholar etc. Therefore give your thesis a descriptive title so that interested researchers can find it in the future.
• Don’t get lost in the detail . You want a descriptive title but avoid overly lengthy descriptions of experiments. Unless a certain analytical technique etc was central to your research, I’d suggest by default* to avoid having it in your title. Including certain techniques will make your title, and therefore research, look overly dated, which isn’t ideal for potential job applications after you graduate.
• The title should tie together the chapters of your thesis. A well-phrased title can do a good job of summarising the overall story of your thesis. Think about each of your research chapters and ensure that the title makes sense for each of them.
• Be strategic . Certain parts of your work you want to emphasise? Consider making them more prominent in your title. For instance, if you know you want to pivot to a slightly different research area or career path after your PhD, there may be alternative phrasings which describe your work just as well but could be better understood by those in the field you’re moving into. I utilised this a bit in my own title which we’ll come onto shortly.
• Do your own thing. Having just laid out some suggestions, do make sure you’re personally happy with the title. You get a lot of freedom to choose your title, so use it however you fancy. For example, I’ve known people to use puns in their title, so if that’s what you’re into don’t feel overly constrained.

*This doesn’t always hold true and certainly don’t take my advice if 1) listing something in your title could be a strategic move 2) you love the technique so much that you’re desperate to include it!

Why I regret my own choice of PhD thesis title

I should say from the outset that I assembled my thesis in quite a short space of time compared to most people. So I didn’t really spend particularly long on any one section, including the title.

However, my main supervisor even spelled out for me that once the title was submitted to the university it would be permanent. In other words: think wisely about your title.

What I started with

Initially I drafted the title as something like: Three dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration . Which I thought was nice, catchy and descriptive.

I decided to go for “correlative imaging” because, not only did it describe the experiments well, but it also sounded kind of technical and fitting of a potential pivot into AI. I’m pleased with that bit of the title.

What I ended up with

Before submitting the title to the university (required ahead of the viva), I asked my supervisors for their thoughts.

One of my well intentioned supervisors suggested that, given that my project didn’t involve verifying regenerative quality, I probably shouldn’t state cartilage regeneration . Instead, they suggested, I should state what I was experimenting on (the materials) rather than the overall goal of the research (aid cartilage regeneration efforts).

With this advice I dialled back my choice of wording and the thesis title I went with was:

Three dimensional correlative imaging for measurement of strain in cartilage and cartilage replacement materials

Reading it back now I’m reminder about how less I like it than my initial idea!

I put up basically no resistance to the supervisor’s choice, even though the title sounds so much more boring in my opinion. I just didn’t think much of it at the time. Furthermore, most of my PhD was actually in a technique which is four dimensional (looking at a series of 3D scans over time, hence 4D) which would have sounded way more sciency and fitting of a PhD.

What I wish I’d gone with

If I had the choice again, I’d have gone with:

Four-dimensional correlative imaging for cartilage regeneration

Which, would you believe it, is exactly what it states on my CV…

Does the thesis title really matter?

In all honesty, your choice of thesis title isn’t that important. If you come to regret it, as I do, it’s not the end of the world. There are much more important things in life to worry about.

If you decide at a later stage that you don’t like it you can always describe it in a way that you prefer. For instance, in my CV I describe my PhD as I’d have liked the title to be. I make no claim that it’s actually the title so consider it a bit of creative license.

Given that as your career progresses you may not even refer back to your thesis much, it’s really not worth stressing over. However, if you’re yet to finalise your thesis title I do still think it is worth a bit of thought and hopefully this article has provided some insights into how to choose a good thesis title.

My advice for developing a thesis title

• Draft the title early. Drafting it early can help give clarity for the overall message of your research. For instance, while you’re assembling the rest of your thesis you can check that the title encompasses the research chapters you’re included, and likewise that the research experiments you’re including fall within what the title describes. Drafting it early also gives more time you to think it over. As with everything: having a first draft is really important to iterate on.
• Look at some example titles . Such as those featured above!
• If you’re not sure about your title, ask a few other people what they think . But remember that you have the final say!

We’ve all been there: you’re sitting in English or Social Studies, and suddenly your teacher announces those dreaded words: “I’d like you all to pick a topic for your upcoming research paper.” Your stomach lurches as your mind races to think of good research paper topics. Should you write about octopuses or the New York Yankees? Should you write about the history of Barbie and her uber-pink Dreamhouse , or perhaps the evolution of Taylor Swift ’s music career?

But First…the All-Important Question: What Makes a Great Topic?

We’re glad you asked! When selecting a topic for your academic research paper, you want to select a compelling topic that immediately grabs the reader’s attention. Just like when choosing a persuasive speech topic or argumentative essay topic , you want to be sure to select a topic that intrigues you personally. This is pivotal for multiple reasons. If you find your topic intriguing, you’ll likely spend more time delving into the subject and gathering information to strengthen your arguments. Additionally, if a topic sparks your curiosity, odds are that your enthusiasm will pique someone else’s interest, too!

The Key to a Good Research Paper: Research

Regardless of the topic you choose, ensure it’s researchable . This means that the subject has sufficient resources for research. Even the most intriguing topic won’t make for a good paper if there’s not much research material out there. Remember: your typical research paper is longer and more in-depth than a regular academic essay. While this means you have more time to explore the topic at hand, it also means that the research paper will rely on more information and analysis of the existing material out there. Before finalizing your topic, make sure to do a preliminary search to guarantee there’s plenty of information out there to help you construct a comprehensive argument, filled with multiple perspectives and facets.

Following Guidelines

Lastly, and most importantly, follow the guidelines your teacher has laid out. If you focus your paper on pop culture, it certainly won’t meet a historical research paper’s requirement! Before embarking on this thrilling intellectual journey, double-check what type of research paper your teacher wants you to write. To prevent future headaches, clarify any rules or conditions upfront.

The Format for a High School Thesis Paper

A high school thesis paper is an independent project in which you establish a claim that you then debate and prove with logic, examples and research. It culminates all your school work, proves your ability to gather data and write effectively and may even be a graduation requisite. English is a humanities discipline that typically follows Modern Language Association guidelines, so the typed paper should include an abstract, evidence, documentation and a works-cited page. As always, you must avoid plagiarism.

Writing the Abstract

The abstract is a brief summary that provides the essential elements and claim of the thesis paper. It is placed at the beginning of the paper and uses key words so that the paper can be categorized and searched, allowing readers to locate it and decide if they want to read the longer work. The components of the abstract will vary according to discipline.

Supporting Your Purpose

Quotations are one type of evidence that you can use to support your argument or purpose. In your thesis paper, you must properly document quotes and other evidence such as paraphrases, data or statistics in order to give credit to the sources you used. Properly documenting your sources prevents plagiarism and allows your readers to locate your sources for further reading.

Listing Your Sources

In addition to citing your sources within the thesis paper itself, a works cited page at the end of the paper should include a properly formatted list of your sources. If you didn't use some of your sources in the paper, do not list them on the works cited page. For each source on the list, use a hanging indentation, where the first line is flush with the margin and all subsequent lines are indented 5 to 7 spaces. Accurately providing and citing sources establishes authority and integrity, so give this step due attention.

Typing the Report

Type and format your thesis paper according to Modern Language Association style guidelines. Margins are set at 1 inch, and the body of the paper is double-spaced with the first line of each paragraph indented one half-inch. At the top left of the first page, include your name, teacher, course and date. Double space again and center the title on the first page, not on a separate page. Each page contains a header at the top right with your last name and page number. Formatting guidelines such as font may vary according to instructor preferences, so ask him or her about any specific questions you may have.

Avoiding Literary Theft

Plagiarism is literary theft of someone else’s work, words or ideas from printed or online sources. Directly quoted information as well as information that is paraphrased or summarized must be credited to the sources from which they came. Plagiarism can be deliberate or accidental, so avoid being penalized by learning how to properly cite and reference sources.

First, none of these papers are perfect and not all earned As. On the first one, I left in the comments I made so you can also get a sense of how I review papers and what are important points to me. Still, please don’t look at these as exemplars and duplicate their errors; instead, look at them as guides of varying abilities that will each help in different ways but where no one helps you in all ways.

Second, some of the papers are the final product after the first semester and some are the final product after the second semester. I’m not sure I should have mixed them together like this, but figured it should be pretty clear which is which and thus to show you the differences between the two. Remember that after the first semester, you will not have any results or a well-developed discussion section, so those papers without those two parts are from the first semester.

Third, yes, you can use these as guides in your own research. If you are interested in a topic similar to any of these, you can use the articles they cite to help you in your own thesis. (Note that a few of them have too few articles: I increased the minimal number needed at one point.)

25 Thesis Statement Examples That Will Make Writing a Breeze

Understanding what makes a good thesis statement is one of the major keys to writing a great research paper or argumentative essay. The thesis statement is where you make a claim that will guide you through your entire paper. If you find yourself struggling to make sense of your paper or your topic, then it's likely due to a weak thesis statement.

Let's take a minute to first understand what makes a solid thesis statement, and what key components you need to write one of your own.

A thesis statement always goes at the beginning of the paper. It will typically be in the first couple of paragraphs of the paper so that it can introduce the body paragraphs, which are the supporting evidence for your thesis statement.

Your thesis statement should clearly identify an argument. You need to have a statement that is not only easy to understand, but one that is debatable. What that means is that you can't just put any statement of fact and have it be your thesis. For example, everyone knows that puppies are cute . An ineffective thesis statement would be, "Puppies are adorable and everyone knows it." This isn't really something that's a debatable topic.

Something that would be more debatable would be, "A puppy's cuteness is derived from its floppy ears, small body, and playfulness." These are three things that can be debated on. Some people might think that the cutest thing about puppies is the fact that they follow you around or that they're really soft and fuzzy.

All cuteness aside, you want to make sure that your thesis statement is not only debatable, but that it also actually thoroughly answers the research question that was posed. You always want to make sure that your evidence is supporting a claim that you made (and not the other way around). This is why it's crucial to read and research about a topic first and come to a conclusion later. If you try to get your research to fit your thesis statement, then it may not work out as neatly as you think. As you learn more, you discover more (and the outcome may not be what you originally thought).

Additionally, your thesis statement shouldn't be too big or too grand. It'll be hard to cover everything in a thesis statement like, "The federal government should act now on climate change." The topic is just too large to actually say something new and meaningful. Instead, a more effective thesis statement might be, "Local governments can combat climate change by providing citizens with larger recycling bins and offering local classes about composting and conservation." This is easier to work with because it's a smaller idea, but you can also discuss the overall topic that you might be interested in, which is climate change.

A quick note that these thesis statements have not been fully researched. These are merely examples to show you what a thesis statement might look like and how you can implement your own ideas into one that you think of independently. As such, you should not use these thesis statements for your own research paper purposes. They are meant to be used as examples only.

• Vaccinations Because many children are unable to vaccinate due to illness, we must require that all healthy and able children be vaccinated in order to have herd immunity.
• Educational Resources for Low-Income Students Schools should provide educational resources for low-income students during the summers so that they don't forget what they've learned throughout the school year.
• School Uniforms School uniforms may be an upfront cost for families, but they eradicate the visual differences in income between students and provide a more egalitarian atmosphere at school.
• Populism The rise in populism on the 2016 political stage was in reaction to increasing globalization, the decline of manufacturing jobs, and the Syrian refugee crisis.
• Public Libraries Libraries are essential resources for communities and should be funded more heavily by local municipalities.
• Cyber Bullying With more and more teens using smartphones and social media, cyber bullying is on the rise. Cyber bullying puts a lot of stress on many teens, and can cause depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. Parents should limit the usage of smart phones, monitor their children's online activity, and report any cyber bullying to school officials in order to combat this problem.
• Medical Marijuana for Veterans Studies have shown that the use of medicinal marijuana has been helpful to veterans who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Medicinal marijuana prescriptions should be legal in all states and provided to these veterans. Additional medical or therapy services should also be researched and implemented in order to help them re-integrate back into civilian life.
• Work-Life Balance Corporations should provide more work from home opportunities and six-hour workdays so that office workers have a better work-life balance and are more likely to be productive when they are in the office.
• Teaching Youths about Consensual Sex Although sex education that includes a discussion of consensual sex would likely lead to less sexual assault, parents need to teach their children the meaning of consent from a young age with age appropriate lessons.
• Whether or Not to Attend University A degree from a university provides invaluable lessons on life and a future career, but not every high school student should be encouraged to attend a university directly after graduation. Some students may benefit from a trade school or a "gap year" where they can think more intensely about what it is they want to do for a career and how they can accomplish this.
• Studying Abroad Studying abroad is one of the most culturally valuable experiences you can have in college. It is the only way to get completely immersed in another language and learn how other cultures and countries are different from your own.
• Women's Body Image Magazines have done a lot in the last five years to include a more diverse group of models, but there is still a long way to go to promote a healthy woman's body image collectively as a culture.
• Cigarette Tax Heavily taxing and increasing the price of cigarettes is essentially a tax on the poorest Americans, and it doesn't deter them from purchasing. Instead, the state and federal governments should target those economically disenfranchised with early education about the dangers of smoking.
• Veganism A vegan diet, while a healthy and ethical way to consume food, indicates a position of privilege. It also limits you to other cultural food experiences if you travel around the world.
• University Athletes Should be Compensated University athletes should be compensated for their service to the university, as it is difficult for these students to procure and hold a job with busy academic and athletic schedules. Many student athletes on scholarship also come from low-income neighborhoods and it is a struggle to make ends meet when they are participating in athletics.
• Women in the Workforce Sheryl Sandberg makes a lot of interesting points in her best-selling book, Lean In , but she only addressed the very privileged working woman and failed to speak to those in lower-skilled, lower-wage jobs.
• Assisted Suicide Assisted suicide should be legal and doctors should have the ability to make sure their patients have the end-of-life care that they want to receive.
• Celebrity and Political Activism Although Taylor Swift's lyrics are indicative of a feminist perspective, she should be more politically active and vocal to use her position of power for the betterment of society.
• The Civil War The insistence from many Southerners that the South seceded from the Union for states' rights versus the fact that they seceded for the purposes of continuing slavery is a harmful myth that still affects race relations today.
• Blue Collar Workers Coal miners and other blue-collar workers whose jobs are slowly disappearing from the workforce should be re-trained in jobs in the technology sector or in renewable energy. A program to re-train these workers would not only improve local economies where jobs have been displaced, but would also lead to lower unemployment nationally.
• Diversity in the Workforce Having a diverse group of people in an office setting leads to richer ideas, more cooperation, and more empathy between people with different skin colors or backgrounds.
• Re-Imagining the Nuclear Family The nuclear family was traditionally defined as one mother, one father, and 2.5 children. This outdated depiction of family life doesn't quite fit with modern society. The definition of normal family life shouldn't be limited to two-parent households.
• Digital Literacy Skills With more information readily available than ever before, it's crucial that students are prepared to examine the material they're reading and determine whether or not it's a good source or if it has misleading information. Teaching students digital literacy and helping them to understand the difference between opinion or propaganda from legitimate, real information is integral.
• Beauty Pageants Beauty pageants are presented with the angle that they empower women. However, putting women in a swimsuit on a stage while simultaneously judging them on how well they answer an impossible question in a short period of time is cruel and purely for the amusement of men. Therefore, we should stop televising beauty pageants.
• Supporting More Women to Run for a Political Position In order to get more women into political positions, more women must run for office. There must be a grassroots effort to educate women on how to run for office, who among them should run, and support for a future candidate for getting started on a political career.

But instead, with a resilient effort from sophomore Greg McGrath and senior anchor Chris Larnard to make up the lost time, the Boston Jesuit Eagles – renamed from BC High because of MIAA policies – saved a 17:15.79 mark to win the school’s first national title.

Junior Shamus Larnard led the pack on the first leg and junior John Wilson came around in third on the second leg, setting a strong tone to eventually beat a field of 60 qualified teams.

They also set all-time school, state and New England records in the event.

“It’s, I guess, just intense gratitude and appreciation (I feel),” said BC High cross country and outdoor track and field coach Seth Kirby. “Beyond being the most talented group, I just feel like they do this sport the way a coach would really want them to. … To say ‘We’re going to do this as a team and set records,’ and to know that it worked out, it just made me feel just intensely grateful to have this group of people I’m coaching.”

“When I crossed the line and realized that we’d won, it was just shock that we had actually done it,” Chris Larnard added. “Now that it’s set in, (I feel) just gratitude looking back over my entire high school career, how much I’ve grown as an athlete, how much I’ve grown as a person because of my teammates and coaches. Being able to do that with a group of guys that we did, it’s just gratitude that I can call myself a national champion now.”

The team didn’t treat the feat as an expectation, but winning the event was certainly a lofty goal they felt was possible if everything in their control went perfectly.

Yet, it didn’t.

Younger brother Shamus Larnard ran a 4:16.73 mile on the first leg, and Wilson’s leg had BC High still in a great position. The team practiced its handoffs a few times before the event started, but McGrath and Wilson couldn’t cleanly execute theirs. McGrath dropped Wilson’s handoff, and as he went to pick it up, he got trampled by the rest of the field and dropped the baton again.

“It was dramatic,” Kirby said. “If the baton goes off the track, you’re disqualified. … He just gets run over, has to run back for the baton, and now we’re in fifth. Then there was a whole comeback thing.”

Chris Larnard was on the infield, watching it unfold. He didn’t see McGrath waver, still handing the baton off in 4:21.17 to keep the Eagles in striking distance.

The University of Pennsylvania-bound senior took care of the rest, quickly running past the runner in second and finished his mile in 4:10.46 to help the team beat the top seed by less than a second (0.83) for the gold.

“I think that really lit a fire for (McGrath) and he was able to make a lot of it back and he gave me the baton (in third place),” Chris Larnard said. “He didn’t choose to let it bring him down, he stayed positive and wasn’t discouraged or anything. So I kind of just took the same mentality into my leg.”

Normally in track and field meets, relays come at the end of the day after individual track events have wrapped up. But in this one, the 4-by-mile was on the first day – which meant the Larnard brothers, Wilson and McGrath would need to risk fatigue in the individual events they qualified for if they decided to go through with it.

Between coming up short of a title in cross country together, and knowing their chances in the relay versus as individuals, they all comfortably committed to the team.

Other programs did not, swapping out top runners while still liking their chances for a strong result.

“For me, it was an easy decision just because it was my last race ever,” Chris Larnard said. “I wanted it to be something special to end with, something to end with my team. … The other guys, they really made the ultimate sacrifice, giving up their individual races for me. I think it is because we didn’t get it in cross country and we know this is our last chance that the four of us will be together.”

“It says a lot about the character of our guys,” Kirby added. “This is like a college showcase. So they were kind of putting their one last stab at attracting D1 interest, they were willing to put that at risk to do what we did.”

BC High competed in the same event last year, but Chris Larnard was the only runner left from that group. The four of them worked at it all summer together in hopes of reaching the stage again.

“My sophomore year, no one from our team went to nationals,” Chris Larnard said. “Even going to nationals was like a crazy big deal. So being able to not only go to nationals, but compete for a national title and ultimately win it, it just shows so much growth from our program. And a lot of people that have been a part of the program for many years, like alumni, they’ve kind of been reaching out. So, it’s been cool.”

Walk-offs and no-hitters: How the four IHSAA baseball state championship games were won

The IHSAA baseball state finals were this weekend at Victory Field .

Here's how the four state championship games were decided:

Class 4A: Lake Central 2, Mooresville 1, 12 innings

▶ Mooresville's Hogan Denny, the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year , was nearly perfect in relief, striking out 12 batters and allowing only one hit in 8.2 innings. But after getting the first two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning, Denny walked Lake Central's Brenden Smith. Hunter DeVaughan, a sophomore committed to Alabama, came in to relieve Denny and walked the next three batters to force in the walk-off winning run for the Indians.

▶ Lake Central's Griffin Tobias struck out nine batters over 8.1 innings, allowing five hits and one walk. Blake Sivak got the win in relief, throwing 3.2 perfect innings.

▶ Hogan Denny was named the Mental Attitude Award winner.

Class 2A: Providence 9, Illiana Christian 0

▶ Providence's Gavin Jackson threw the first no-hitter in state championship history (57 years). Jackson struck out 10 batters over seven innings, while walking three.

▶ Senior Jack Beyl knocked in three runs to leave the Pioneers' offensive attack. Sophomore Blake Straub added two RBIs.

▶ Providence's Luke Kruer was named Mental Attitude Award winner.

Class 3A: New Prairie 7, Brebeuf Jesuit 2

▶ New Prairie won its first IHSAA baseball state championship, while Brebeuf finished runner-up a third time.

▶ Reed Robinson and Jordan Davis both went 2-for-3 and each knocked in two runs for New Prairie, who used a four-run fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

▶ New Prairie's Tyson Greenwood got the win after striking out seven batters in six innings, allowing five hits and just one earned run. The senior was also named the Mental Attitude Award winner.

Class A: Barr-Reeve 6, Lafayette Central Catholic 1

▶ Barr-Reeve wins its first IHSAA baseball state championship.

▶ Seth Wagler went the distance on the mound for the Vikings, striking out five, while allowing six hits, two walks and just one run.

▶ Tyler Graber went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI and Jake Pauw added two hits and two RBIs for Barr-Reeve

▶ Barr-Reeve's Ethan Graber was named Gardner Mental Attitude Award winner.

Jordan High School ultimate Frisbee team to compete for national title in Illinois

DURHAM, N.C. — Ultimate Frisbee is one of the many unconventional sports on the rise in not just the United States, but also in North Carolina.

In Durham, one of the nation's best teams doesn't just practice, but it dominates.

The Jordan High School club ultimate Frisbee team, the Dirty Birds, is in Rockford, Illinois this weekend, and is looking to win its first national title.

What You Need To Know

Ultimate frisbee is one of the many unconventional sports on the rise in north carolina the jordan high school club ultimate frisbee team is competing this weekend for a national title the team has won three consecutive state championships.

The Dirty Birds won North Carolina state titles for each of the last three years and have won five total since the team was created in the 1990s. 

"It's sort of little bit of an expectation right now that we're able to do well, but it's just the hard work we put in, in practice," Jordan High School junior Devak Coltrane said.

Coltrane is like many of the kids who attend Jordan High School, taking part in extracurricular activities supported by the school, while also competing for the non-affiliated ultimate Frisbee team.

In fact, 95% of the team is made up of Jordan High School students, and they support themselves when it comes to club dues and equipment, which can range from $50 to $100.

The current Jordan High School club team actually has so many players, that it has three different teams: a starting competitive team, which is currently in Rockford, an all-female team and a developmental team.

When head coach and Jordan High School class of 2012 graduate Michael Avila joined the club as a player, he remembers there were only around 20 people total.

"It's been really cool to see with Jordan like a lot of growth that's happened over the years," Avila said. "I think at one point, back when I first started, we had a group of like maybe 18, 19 people, and now we got three different teams amongst this team, our development team and the girls team"

Coltrane, who also plays tennis for Jordan High School, is the ultimate Frisbee team's spirit leader. While he is vocal and supportive of his teammates, this position does not mean he is in charge of cheering.

With ultimate Frisbee there are usually no referees. It is ultimately officiated by the players themselves, which means high school kids who are trying to win, have to be honest and mature enough to call a game fairly.

When the game gets too physical or chippy, it is up to each team's spirit leader, in this case Coltrane, to meet during a game and figure out how cooler heads can prevail.

"With any sport, like sometimes, you'll get someone that gets a little too frustrated, but overall, they do a really great job of maintaining a lot of integrity, and that's kind of like throughout all the different teams across the country and in the state," Avila said. "Like everyone's super, really really good about it. Really thoughtful, and even if they want to win and beat the other team, they're still looking out for each other."

The Dirty Birds adopted their current name in 2016. The name in no way represents a sense of cheating or playing dirty. It's a motto the players have adopted of not being afraid to put their bodies on the line. 

"Just our motto, dirty on the field, play good, get dirty, stuff like that. Always putting our body on the line, just working hard out there is what it means," Coltrane said.

The Dirty Birds are always willing to take on new players, and the sport's free flowing style allows for numerous players to see playing time every game. Seven players from each team play on the field at once, and in a game where you are constantly running and going from offense to defense, fresh legs are always needed to keep up the fast pace of play.

But take it one step further, and the sad fact of the matter is that not every high school has an affiliated club ultimate Frisbee team. Despite the Triangle being the hotbed for ultimate Frisbee in the state of North Carolina, many schools don't have an organized club. That's why you'll occasionally find players on the team who come from neighboring schools. It's a responsibility teams like the Dirty Birds must take on if they want the sport to continue growing. 

The Dirty Birds are ranked second in the entire country and sit behind only a team from Seattle. The two teams will meet up this weekend in Rockford and compete with other teams for the national title. Michigan high school softball: Evart needs just one hit to win D-3 title, first in history

EAST LANSING – Evart only managed one hit against Ottawa Lake-Whiteford’s super pitcher, Unity Nelson, but that was all that the Wildcats needed to win their first MHSAA championship in school history.

Mattisen Tiedt singled in the bottom half of the sixth inning to drive home Allyson Theunick from second base, producing the only run of the game in the Division 3 softball final at Michigan State University’s Secchia Stadium.

Theunick reached first base when she was hit by Nelson (a North Dakota signee), and stole second base before Tiedt drove her home.

“I went up to the plate thinking either she’s going to hit me inside, or I’m going to have to crack it outside and get a double or something. Then I hit it outside,” said Tiedt, a sophomore.

“I told Mattie she had her timing down the previous at-bat – she had two balls that just missed being fair, and I told her there’s nobody else I’d rather have up there than her,” first-year coach Shaun Gray said. “She came through for us.”

Whiteford (30-6-1) had a chance to pull out the victory in the top of the seventh, placing runners on second and third with one out, but sophomore pitcher Kyrah Gray bore down and struck out the next two batters to end the game.

“I just knew to pitch my pitch, not get overwhelmed, be confident, and know I’m a good pitcher and I can get these people out, and just don’t worry about it,” she said.

“My goodness. It was a roller-coaster,” said Shaun Gray, the pitcher’s father. “We struck the first batter out and it was easy, and then the next two batters made us work our butts off – I think both of them fouled three or four pitches off, found their way on base before Kyrah came through with the second out of the inning on a strikeout. I think we probably got a fortunate call on strike three in the end, but I ain’t complaining about it.”

Kyrah Gray allowed just five hits all afternoon, and 78 of her 100 pitches were strikes.

D-2 SOFTBALL FINAL: Michigan high school softball: Gaylord tops Vicksburg in 8 to repeat as Division 2 champ

Before Theunick was put on first, Evart only had three other baserunners all day – Kiera Elder and Katelyn Gostlin were both walked, and Tiedt had been hit by a pitch.

“Off the mound, I knew it was going to be a battle to get runs,” Kyrah Gray said. “We knew that we weren’t going to get 10 runs, we were going to be happy if we did, but we knew it was going to be a dogfight, so we just kept fighting until that one pitch came and we got it.”

Whiteford, meanwhile, threatened to take the early lead with back-to-back doubles in the second inning from Kaydence Sheldon and Koralynn Billau, but since Billau’s was down the left-field line, pinch-runner Ava Stevens didn’t advance past third base.

The game was also notable because it was a match-up between the teams that were defeated in the past two Division 3 finals. Standish-Sterling beat Whiteford, 1-0, last year with a run in the bottom of the seventh despite a 5-hitter from Nelson. Evart lost an extra inning game, 3-2, to Millington in 2022.

“There’s four or five of them on this team when we were runners-up,” Gray said. “They battled this all season long. The hardest part of this season was trying to get us not to look to this point, and I thought we did a heck of a job. The proof is in the pudding, I guess.”

“We came into this game thinking it was going to be a bigger score because it’s a state championship,” Tiedt said. “We thought maybe it was going to be 5-4 or 6-5, but both teams shut each other down and it came down to one hit.”

Taylor Farrell of Corning captures second national title in racewalking

Corning-Painted Post senior Taylor Farrell became a two-time national champion with a record-setting performance in the girls 1-mile racewalk at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Farrell dominated a field of 17 competitors Saturday morning with a winning time of 7 minutes, 7.31 seconds to break the meet record of 7:16.97 set last year by Ashlyn Poylin of Gardiner Area High School in Maine.

Her Corning teammate, Sofia Scouten, placed 14th in 8:36.78.

The title followed an indoor track & field season in which Farrell won the 1-mile racewalk at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in Boston . Her winning time of 7:05.14 was also a meet record.

Farrell was the New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor champion in the 1,500-meter racewalk in March with a Section 4-record time of 6:40.09. There is no state competition in racewalking in New York during the outdoor season.

Elsewhere at the meet, Ithaca's Tsadia Bercuvitz placed 36th in the girls 1-mile run in 4:52.45 and 38th in the girls 2-mile seeded run in 4:33.02.

Other Corning results:

• Sarah Lawson placed 11th in the girls 5,000 run in 17:20.13.
• Douglas Cornfield placed 13th in the boys 2,000 steeplechase in 6:02.52, 25th in the boys 5,000 run in 15:41, 45th in the boys 2-mile unseeded run (9:22.22) and 58th in the boys 3,000 in 8:44.75.
• Sadie Beres finished 22nd in the girls 2,000 steeplechase in 7:19.38.
• The team of Beres, Ella Grinnell, Olivia Martinec and Faith Tubbs took 17th in the girls 4-mile relay in 21:31.31.
• The girls distance medley relay of Tubbs, Cella McLaughlin, Leila Ianovici and Lawson finished 34th in 12:31.6.
• Sophia Cimo finished 29th in the girls hammer throw with a top effort of 41.08 meters.

Tkachuk's old high school classmate Tatum helps Celtics win NBA Finals

Boston forward tells Panthers forward to 'make it 2 tomorrow' shortly after title-clinching victory Monday

SUNRISE, Fla. --   Matthew Tkachuk is focused on winning the Stanley Cup for the Florida Panthers, which they can do on Tuesday in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers (8 p.m. ET; ABC, ESPN+, SN, TVAS, CBC).

But the Panthers forward has also been keeping an eye on his good friend and fellow St. Louis native Jayson Tatum, who won his first NBA championship with the Boston Celtics on Monday against the Dallas Mavericks.

After the Celtics' 106-88 win at TD Garden on Monday that clinched the title, Tatum has a message for his old friend.

"Tkachuk, yo, get it done tomorrow," Tatum said. "One kid from St. Louis won a championship today, let's make it two tomorrow."

During Stanley Cup Final Media Day earlier this month, Tkachuk said he was keeping an eye on Tatum.

“Yeah it’s actually really cool when you think about it," Tkachuk said. "Everyone from St. Louis, whether they were going to watch or not, with having both of us in, I’d say there’s a lot of people, especially the kids we grew up with and families and people who know us, they’re pulling for both teams. It’s super cool to have that support back home for not only myself, but for the Celtics as well."

Tkachuk and Tatum each attended Chaminade College Preparatory School, an independent Catholic school for boys in grades 6-12, in St. Louis. Tkachuk left there after the ninth grade for the United States National Development Program. Tatum graduated in 2016 and his No. 22 was retired by the school two years later.

“I know I’m watching the games. I think it would be unreal for Chaminade and all of St. Louis if we can both win it,” Tkachuk said. “Yeah, I’m definitely cheering for him. Definitely."
