Don’t leave it till the last day

A marketing strategy is a long-term plan for attaining a company's goals through consumer understanding and the creation of a distinct and sustainable competitive advantage. Marketing strategies are very important to any business organisation in order to achieve business goals. Different organizations used different marketing strategies and it depends on their industry. Many industries faced difficulties in Sri Lankan context and global context due to the COVID-19 pandemic and they had to used different types of marketing strategies to survive in the market. The objective of this study is to identify different types of marketing strategies used in Sri Lankan and global context industries during COVID-19 era and how they used these strategies to survive in the market. This study mainly focuses on tourism industry, FMCG industry, apparel industry and banking industry and how they used marketing strategies and suggestions were indicated.

Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean.

Key industries.

The key industry in Sri Lanka is tourism. The country has many major tourist attraction sites. For example, the Golden Temple of Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved. Colombo Lotus Tower is another primary attraction site. The tower is 1,168 feet tall and overlooks the entire city of Colombo.

The textile industry is another leading sector in Sri Lanka. There are several factories around the country, which serve large, well-known global clothing brands.

Sri Lanka is a South Asian island lying in the Indian Ocean. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the legislative capital in the southwestern part of the country, about five miles southeast of Colombo (the commercial capital). There are government offices and many people also live in this city.

Furthermore, Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. It is also the most populous city. Colombo is a port city in the south of the country, which has one of the largest man-made docks in the world. This city is where most of Sri Lanka’s foreign trade takes place. One of the outstanding buildings in Colombo is the Clock Tower. Others include the Galle Face Hotel, St. Lucia’s Cathedral, and the Town Hall.

Sri Lanka faces many challenges. For example, it has high public debt that it must service. Still, the forecast is that the country will rebound. Global and domestic activity is strengthening. This turnaround is due to increased private consumption and low-interest rates. Exports will grow as demand increases in most major markets.

Money sent home from abroad and garment exports are Sri Lanka’s biggest foreign exchange earners. Tourism follows. The industry was in a slump due to recent terror attacks and the pandemic, but it has potential to grow and blossom over the next decade.

Also, the World Bank has been supporting Sri Lanka for a long time now. With private sector investments, the government will be in a better position to take care of the needs of the people.

Sri Lanka has also launched new deals with China in the Belt and Road Initiative, potentially opening up new infrastructure and trade deals.

Benefits and Strengths in the Market

Sri Lanka is a developing country where many people farm for a living. This sector contributes one-fifth of the GDP. Also, a quarter of the country’s people have jobs in that sector. Tea export and rice production are other income earners in Sri Lanka.

Consumer Base

Consumer spending has increased over the years in Sri Lanka. The personal saving of persons has also increased. People of Sri Lanka would rather have new and foreign products. Domestic goods and services are not as popular. Still, coming with a new and fresh entity can be a good move if marketed properly.

Sri Lanka is one of the emerging global centers for business trade. Here are some reasons to consider doing business in this market.

Firstly, Sri Lanka’s location is excellent. It is at the midpoint of two major shipping routes: Asia and Europe. This location is great for doing business, and it is also useful because it enables companies to enter newer markets. They benefit from ease of shipping their products.

Behavioural marketing just does that. It gives great insights into the actual behaviour of consumers by learning their various activities. This enables us to have a more realistic and meaningful engagement. Online marketers are truly lucky in this regard; they can easily track and measure the whole customer journey.  The other part to this is learning human emotions. This is not something new; psychology in marketing has been there throughout. In an increasingly sensitive world, emotional marketing is something one cannot afford to ignore today. It’s important to know how consumers evaluate brands and what makes that special connection. It goes beyond just storytelling. It touches one’s heart and not the temporary mind.  

Digital and social media will require niche thinking The whole digital landscape especially social media is overcrowded with new technologies, new media, and new tools. This new virtual world only keeps expanding exponentially. It’s very unlikely to plan and executive a unified digital marketing strategy. Luckily every social media network or sharing site out there today stands for something; it has a specific audience for brands to target.  Then there are various hyper-focused niche social networks that we haven’t even heard of. Using the right platform at the right time with the right messaging is key to success, whether you simply want to sell your product or convince an entire group to buy into an opinion or policy your brand is trying to achieve.  Brands will have to get onboard with those who are experts in either one or two or more of these platforms, and not just have one person overlooking the entire digital marketing aspect which is the case with many local companies here.

Content marketing will always be king How you create and distribute your messages in a meaningful and impactful way continue to be a priority. Increasingly, the ‘content’ in content marketing seems to dominate everything else. It’s all about being clever at this point.  Today many brands measure their success in just how many million views on a video they acquired in just a few days, or how many share or mentions that goes around for a particular topic. Again, psychology plays a major role here. They say that everyone is a content creator today, but only a few are content marketers. 

Reputation will stir boardroom discussions Companies are now giving importance to what their reputation among various stakeholders look like. They understand that having an in-depth knowledge about their character and identity is just as important or probably more than their revenues and plans.  Strategic communications have become an integral part of the boardroom today, with more weight given towards digital. Brands that have suffered a crisis know this, but with the recent coronavirus pandemic, it’s likely that every brand- regardless its size, origin and type- know the true meaning of reputation and just how important it is to manage all elements that make up their reputation.

Collaborations will be a strong marketing strategy With many brands looking at spending less yet gain more sales and traction, pursuing a collaborative marketing strategy has proved to be highly successful. Leaving individualism and selfishness aside, brands are now teaming up and creating something very exclusive and appealing.  We see entrepreneurs and startups taking a lead in this regard, and we also see the countless number of co-branding, mergers and partnerships among corporations. It’s definitely a commendable attitude. Some brand personalities complement so well with each other.

Thinking and acting social is no longer an option CSR and sustainability isn’t just another fancy tactic used today. Consumers are increasingly conscious of how the brand thinks and act socially, in other words, its social purpose. Many consumers especially the younger generations make brand choices purely based on social aspect. They expect the brand to have many social efforts. It’s very obvious that a brand that doesn’t have this isn’t likely to succeed in the long term.  This is not another strategy to pursue like societal or social marketing, the social aspect need to be embedded and firmly rooted in each and every aspect of the business. This is never an easy task to achieve especially when it doesn’t meet the financial interests of investors and other stakeholders.  Stakeholder acceptance is crucial to its success, and marketers will have to make this happen. There are many brands that have succeeded in connecting their goals with societal needs.

Employees will turn into intrapreneurs Many companies are recruiting those with good entrepreneurial traits and skills who challenge the company’s status quo way of thinking. They are called intrapreneurs, and are primarily and directly responsible for driving innovation or a project within an organisation.  They have excellent problem-solving and decision making skills. They’re particularly noticeable in many large corporations that find it hard to sustain the entrepreneurial spirit it once had, avoiding any stagnation. Regardless the size or type, many companies are now grooming their employees to be intrapreneurs. 

Direct sales will turn to human-to-human marketing Door-to-door sales is a concept that is probably dead today. It’s rather fascinating to learn that some are leveraging this as an opportunity as people continue to stay back and work from home during this pandemic. The same goes to traditional cold calling or the old-fashioned direct mail.  A majority of the population in many countries still aren’t familiar with various technology. Let’s face it, no connection could compare to that of meeting in person and building relationships face-to-face. We are humans, it’s our basic instinct. Surprisingly these so called old-school methods are not quite dead. It has only been rephrased to human-to-human (H2H) marketing, and this is increasingly important in a digital world where there isn’t much of human touch.

Marketing automation will continue to rise Big data automation is happening almost across all industry sectors today, enabling one to increase operational efficiency, sales, and an enhanced customer experience. The technology continues to evolve rapidly. Robotics, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) especially machine learning are reshaping the business landscape.   With increased innovations and competition, marketers are increasingly challenged to make evidence-based decision making faster. They are investing in these technological advances than never before. Various recent surveys show that automation is more important as a skill. 

Marketers will be strategic leaders Traditionally, marketing has always been about sales whether we like or not. And this sadly continues to be the truth in many companies here. This is changing. We see many marketing professionals leading the organisations today.  They’re not just responsible for the overall sales, profitability and health of the organisation but also for its innovation, reputation, sustainability and creating entrepreneurial change. They are increasingly required to be an all-rounder with the ability to lead and give directions. Many marketers recently have also shown keen interest in acquiring skills in other related disciplines such as finance, people, supply chain and so on.

What has the Internet done to the Sri Lankan Marketing Industry?

As a Sri Lankan, I have spent more time on TV and radio during the civil war. If there is a program on a TV  for 30 minutes, 10-15 minutes would be allocated for advertisements, in other words, promoting brands and products. Sometimes, they used to attract me quite well, but then such ads interrupt my favorite TV or radio shows.  It was after the civil war I got introduced to the internet and social media. My gradual attraction to the internet made me realize that the brands I have seen on TV are more often seen over there too.  I couldn’t understand why I see this. And I wanted to know why, which made me read about it further. I learned that it is the new trend called Digital Marketing. Wait! If Digital Marketing in Sri Lanka is new, then what was the old pattern? I wanted to know it. What I found out as a result of my curiosity is presented below. 

Marketing trends in Sri Lanka

Marketers in Sri Lanka quite well understand how much their internet marketing techniques are dragging the users towards the brand. But the freshers don’t. Marketing and the Internet have got along more often these days than they have been in the earlier stages of digital marketing in Sri Lanka. The record of InternetLiveStats shows that the “internet penetration” rate was 8.8% in 2009 (the year the civil war ended). But, the stats drove up after 2010,  and the recent report announces that the penetration rate has reached 29.3%. This improvement puts Sri Lanka in 57th place among the 201 countries in 2015, according to the InternetLiveStats . Sri Lanka is still a developing in the field of e-commerce. But with the surge of internet penetration, the digital marketing ecosystem is growing too.

What was marketing like during the Civil War?

Due to civil war , (before 2009) the internet access was pretty down.  The locals used t raditional marketing methods like printing and broadcasting about products and brands as their marketing strategies. Although it was costly(when compared to the cost of digital marketing now), they had to make use of it, while the world was developing in digital marketing.

Printed media  was one of the primary source used for marketing and advertising. The marketers focused on commercializing their products and brands through newspaper advertising, magazines, and leaflets given randomly or during events like an exhibition. Also, to attract the travelers, marketing through huge banners on empty lands was another trend of the time in Marketing.

The next traditional method of marketing was broadcasting or telecasting the promotions. Here more frequently marketers used the celebrities, like cricket players and local cinema stars, to promote their new products or brand. The number of TV watchers and radio listeners were high at that time, at least to get know the conflict updates, which also helped the marketers in promotions to advertise their products.  

Remember when you had to fill up a coupon when you did quite a  big shopping at a shopping mall or supermarket? M obile number and address are the details you had to fill in such coupon.  Ever got promotion notifications from them later? Well, the shopping centers and supermarkets were handling it as another technique to send promotions to its customers. Marketers also dealt with cold calling to convince customers about the products.

Final method was that some companies employed sale representatives. While cold calling was an another way to promote beyond boundaries, sales rep of areas had to take samples of the brands to doorsteps of everyone in the particular range. And, these were all used as marketing methods before  Digital Marketing started to penetrate into Sri Lanka.

What influence does digital marketing have in Sri Lanka?

The end of Civil War made several opportunities open to the marketers. As the statics   above has shown about the internet penetration in Sri Lanka, marketers have started to take advantage of it. Online advertising started parallel to the advertising and marketing through the simplex mode. Some websites started rising, and marketers began to realize the worth of online marketing. Still, only a very few people engaged in that new pattern, maybe because it was the beginning of the era of digital marketing.

For the start, the companies have only been looking to posting ad banners on the websites. For them, it was like posting an advertisement on newspaper. But the actual substance started to click as they began to get to know more about it. Then the companies began to move on to other marketing platforms available on the internet. Also, this new marketing world provided new entrepreneurs an idea. Bang! It gave a few individuals an idea on starting a digital marketing agency.

Why should the Marketers focus on it?

Firstly, the Sri Lankan marketers would fall for its uniqueness: duplex. Digital Marketing helps the marketers analyze the effect their skills have on customers. This uniqueness helps them adapt according to the user experience.  It also helps them to get real-time reviews from the product users, like Cinnamon Air for example, which would attract other customers towards their product.

Digital marketing is wide open; this is another possibility. How open is it? Digital marketing is wide open around the world. With the e-commerce sites like Amazon and eBay, imagine how one would be able to know about them, without marketing it online? Like you wouldn’t bother about getting to know it if such sites have been advertised or sold on the traditional method of marketing: through printed media or TV and radio. One-click check-ins have made it very easier and simple. This feature of digital marketing is quite supportive to the enterprises that are focusing on global market, attracting international customers.

Digital Marketing is quite cost effective. When compared to the cost of traditional marketing methods, online marketing is pretty cheap. This online marketing would more likely replace some of the traditional methods like cold calling, advertising on television and radio. Although there is still some attention to the simplex mode of marketing, the number has reduced when compared to the ‘during the war’ stats.

What type of digital marketing trends do the local companies handle.

Although there are several methods like the website, social media marketing, PPC, video marketing, email marketing, remarketing, the local marketers only managed to catch up with a few. Mainly, the website, social media marketing, PPC, and SMS marketing.

There are around 20 digital marketing companies in Sri Lanka which delivers Search, Social, Local and complete e-Commerce strategies to the global brands through an online platform, which includes Prime One Global LLC , Loops Solutions, Orix marketing and others. And according to Mike Berry has foreseen in 2012, the marketing trends in the year 2016 in the digital commercialization of Sri Lanka has grown.

The objective of the content and PPC marketing is to rank the company’s site on the top, or near the top lists while been searched. Since the company’s site would be quite new, or haven’t been in the required state for the search engine to display it while being searched, the digital marketing companies would polish it up for it to be ranked. According to the ranks, the company’s brand and the product get promoted. Also, PPC is another method where the companies ‘buy visits’ through the advertisements on search engines and on other sites.

While these two techniques are on the top in digital marketing environment of Sri Lanka, there is another big world for marketers waiting — the world quite big and equal to the Internet — social media. With the landing of smartphones, Sri Lankans spend more time on the social media (and the internet) . Readme and Loop Solution conducted a survey in 2013, in which 58% of respondents access Facebook and Twitter through mobile. Almost 71% of the local respondents answered that the marketing done through social media has been quite effective than the traditional media marketing. Also, 49% of the respondents said that they watch TV less than one hour daily, while only 28% of them read the newspaper daily.

 Also, according to the survey 85% of them answered that they have been following local brands. Also, marketing through Facebook has influenced 79% of the users to purchase the products. This force has made marketers focus more on social media marketing than on the other methods available.

The latest trend the marketers are focusing on is SMS Marketing. Since the number of mobile phones users is quite high, rather than cold calling, dropping a text about their product or brand is getting trendy these days. And, most of the companies focus on making much out of this growing style of marketing in Sri Lanka.

What should the marketers focus on for the future.

There are many other digital marketing activities which our marketers need to focus. Digital Marketing trends like Remarketing , Google Tag Manager , email marketing and so on are not very actively used among the local marketers. Since the industry is still developing one, we could expect the marketers to get into this trend in future.  Within the short period, Sri Lanka has got adapted to the digital marketing world. There is a long way to go because this digital world is changing day by day. If focused on the newly turning up digital marketing environment as well, the prospect of the domestic market to be a part of the global market would be rising. If the marketers are already focusing on the global market, it is advisable to concentrate on the broad range of social media. Social media doesn’t stop with Facebook and Twitter but extends to Snapchat, Instagram and so on. So focus on the rest of the available global platforms that would attract the global users.

I’ve couple of questions to understand how you are defining Digital marketing in terms of Sri Lankan marketers perspective! Hope you don’t mind elongating below questions.

1) Why Sri Lankan brands ( Especially FMCG) paying great attention for the traditional marketing rather than Digital marketing strategies ? 2) As you mentioned Dialog, Sampath Bank are fastest growing Brands on social media! How legit is the data metrics ? 3) I can see the Government and politicians clearly understand the potential about the digital marketing, But, are they really encouraging the Sri Lankan startup’s and Brands to step in with proper Digital marketing process?

Hi, Sharanyan. 🙂 Thank you for taking your time to read and comment on the post. Unmistakably, local marketers think that digital marketing means social media marketing, while it is not.

Remember the proverb: “old is gold”? I think most of the FMCG companies are still holding to that and are quite scared to adapt to the change. Thoughts and myths like ‘no other competing companies are onto this industry’ prevent the local marketers from focusing more on digital marketing. Also, there is a question on how much do such enterprises know about the statics on the change.

FB page likes and followers have determined the statistics provided above. Mobile service providers like Dialog are more into technology and are willing to compete in the global market. Therefore such companies, focus on ‘where to catch customers’.

The politicians and the government seem to encourage the startups to make use of digital marketing. You know there have been so many digital marketing promotions during the election campaigns, a year back, and the result of it has become quite a motivation for the brands to attract customers through the virtual world. Although the government has taken not many direct steps in motivating the brands in digital marketing, indirect motivations have always been a key. Still, they small companies or the companies that are reluctant to see the vastness of the digital world, still hold on to traditional marketing methods that seem to attract a few customers.

I think the locals recruit HR more in marketing because there is a need to take the companies to digitally inverted places. I believe that their decision on hiring more HR for marketing is because they’re focusing on competing with the global market as well. As always, marketing needs more creativity, which is what such companies are willing to achieve through a huge number of marketers. Also, digital marketing came into light for Local marketers a few years ago. It means that they still have difficulties in giving up the traditional method of marketing totally.

Should the local marketers give up on the traditional marketing pattern and switch totally to the digital marketing world, is an interesting topic to argue on. 😉 Hope I write a post on that too. 🙂

Hi, happy to see your first article. You have done total justice to your first attempt. My view on digital marketing is, there is lot to be developed in Sri Lanka on this scope. Digital marketing is something which is established to help out people. But here in Sri Lanka it is considered as an annoying thing rather an advantageous thing. You will get a sms during a busy schedule, you will get a pop out when going through internet. These things annoy people, because i used to face these situations. There are many ways to do digital marketing. So i would much appreciate if you could elaborate on negative sides and how to overcome those negative sides in your upcoming articles. CFA Society Sri Lanka Announces the Launch of the Ravi Abeysuriya Memorial Award at Capital Market Awards 2024

CFA Society Sri Lanka is proud to announce the launch of the Ravi Abeysuriya Memorial Award for Best Stock Brokering Research Team, unveiled at the 2024 Capital Market Awards. This award pays tribute to the indelible legacy of Ravi Abeysuriya, CFA, a pioneering force in Sri Lanka’s financial sector.

Ravi Abeysuriya, the first CFA charterholder in Sri Lanka since 1995, played a pivotal role in the formation of CFA Society Sri Lanka in 2001. Under his leadership as the founding President, the society began with just 16 members and has since grown to support nearly 300 members and over 400 candidates, with more than 1000 CFA charterholders from Sri Lanka taking up influential positions globally.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ravi was a tireless advocate for financial literacy in Sri Lanka. He co-authored "Financial Literacy to Achieve Your Financial Wellbeing," a landmark publication by CFA Society Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. His frequent appearances on business TV programs and public forums made financial education accessible to the general public. He was also known for his outspoken stance against unethical practices, such as pyramid schemes, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to integrity in finance.

Ravi’s contributions extended beyond national boundaries as he served as a goodwill ambassador between CFA Society Sri Lanka and the CFA Institute, USA. His efforts to maintain a continuous dialogue and nurture this relationship earned him high regard within the global CFA community. In recognition of his lifelong dedication, Ravi was honored with the inaugural ‘Lifetime Achievement Award laureate’ by the CFA Institute in 2017.

“Ravi was a special individual who possessed a large heart, immense passion, and a high level of commitment. He was a mentor to many young professionals and a steadfast advocate for the highest standards of ethics, education, and professional excellence in the financial industry,” said Rachini Rajapaksa, CFA,  Past President of CFA Society Sri Lanka.

In remembrance of his remarkable contributions, CFA Society Sri Lanka unveiled Ravi’s portrait in its local office last year. The renaming of the gold award as the Ravi Abeysuriya Memorial Award for Best Stock Brokering Research Team at the 2024 Capital Market Awards stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. This honor symbolizes the society’s gratitude and reverence for Ravi’s larger-than-life impact on the industry.

CFA Society Sri Lanka invites all members, partners, and stakeholders to join in celebrating Ravi Abeysuriya’s legacy through this prestigious award. National Consultant - Mercury and Health Project

Purpose of consultancy

The global project on elimination of mercury containing skin-lightening products is being implemented in three countries including Sri Lanka. The project is under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Global Mercury Partnership and is jointly being implemented by the Ministry of Health Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Environment Sri Lanka in close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI).

Under the proposed project, the consultant will support the Ministry of Health to develop and implement a national plan to update national legislation and strengthen surveillance of mercury in skin-lightening products in Sri Lanka. The project is expected to help country move towards elimination of mercury containing skin-lightening products from the market, in compliance to the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is actively leading and working to eliminate the use of mercury Skin Lightening Products (SLPs) and to discourage the use of SLPs overall. In response to the health-related issues or activities and articles of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the Sixty-seventh World Health Assembly adopted and approved Resolution WHA67.11 (2014): Public health impacts of exposure to mercury and mercury compounds: the role of World Health Organization (WHO) and ministries of public health in the implementation of the Minamata Convention. The Resolution calls on WHO Member States to address the public health aspects of mercury and mercury compounds in the context of the health sector by identifying measures and preparatory actions to be taken by their health ministries for implementation of the health-related articles of the Convention.

To protect the public from negative health effects of mercury in SLPs, the proposed project seeks to support Parties in implementing the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Sri Lanka is Party to the Convention since 2017.  The Convention requires Parties to phase out the manufacture, import, and export of mercury-containing products subject to the provisions of Article 4. The phase out is also related to other articles, including Article 16 (health aspects), Article 17 (information exchange), and Article 18 (public information, awareness and education). These also apply to products including cosmetics containing mercury, including skin lightening creams and soaps.

Deliverables

  • To implement the project, the consultant, in close consultation with the relevant national stakeholders and international partners, is expected implement the national plan to phase out mercury-added skin-lightening products from the market. The consultant is also expected to hold national consultations and capacity building to improve stakeholder and public awareness on mercury in skin-lightening products and the Minamata Convention, and draft technical products to achieve the objectives of the project. 
  • The consultant will work with the Directorate of Environmental & Occupational Health of the Ministry of Health, Government of Sri Lanka as primary responsible agency of the project. A national project activity plan agreed by the national stakeholders will need to be implemented, in close consultation with the National Project Steering committee, other national stakeholders, and in collaboration with global SLP project partners. The following key activities would be completed in the assignment period.
  • Facilitating the process of establishing or improving existing regulations and revision of of standards for mercury containing cosmetics (SLP).
  • Evaluating existing laboratory capacities related to mercury assessment in SLPs.
  • Planning and conducting SLP sampling and testing for mercury content and finalizing analyses and reports.
  • Developing recommendations and guidance on enforcement and compliance to strengthen surveillance of mercury in SLPs.
  • Participating in meetings of Technical Sub-Committees as established the Ministry of Health under the project.
  • Planning and conducting awareness and training workshops with identified national stakeholders. E.g. Government officials, health professionals, producers, traders importers.
  • Developing education and awareness materials for varied target audience on mercury in SLPs and their health impact.
  • Preparing policy briefs, communication products, and project reports, targeted to policymakers, consumers, health practitioners and tailored to the products found in the national marketplace as required during the implementation phase of the project.
  • Preparing regular project updates and supporting evaluation of country’s participation and contribution to global project efforts.
  • Participating in project coordination and progress review meetings, held virtually or physically, develop minutes and follow up on agreed actions throughout the assignment period.

Qualifications, experience, skills and languages

Educational Qualifications

Essential: Bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental health, or biological sciences, from a recognized university

Desirable: Master’s degree in public health

Essential: At least one year of experience in developing, supporting, or managing environmental health related projects.

Desirable: Experience of working in public health or environmental health within the government sector. Frequent contacts inside and outside government agencies and international organizations involved in environmental health and/or product safety. Experience in collaborative programmes supported by bilateral or multi-lateral international agencies would be an advantage. Experience of working on heavy metals in the environment will be an advantage

Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures on environmental health and/or product safety.
  • Experience and proficiency in working with government and other partners in an effective and culturally competent manner.
  • Ability to work effectively in health and non-health sectors, with government and non-government partners.
  • Ability to analyze issues and formulate conclusions and recommendations.

Languages and level required (Basic/Intermediate/Expert):

Essential: Expert knowledge of English

Desirable:   Expert knowledge of Sinhala or Tamil

Off site : Directorate of Environmental Health, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environment, with occassional attendance at WHO Country Office Sri Lanka for required coordination.

The Consultant may require to travel within the country to hold meetings with relevant stakeholders. Dates and venues to be decided as and when required.

Remuneration and budget (travel costs are excluded):

Remuneration: LKR 450,873.00 per month

Living expenses: Not applicable

Expected duration of contract: 8 months – 100%

USA TODAY is joining broadcast, streaming, and cable networks like Fox News and ABC to show the CNN Presidential Debate Simulcast next Thursday.

The first presidential debate of the 2024 cycle is breaking with tradition: Instead of being organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) and presented across different networks, the candidates decided to bypass the commission and instead participate in two network-produced debates.

Tune into the ‘ CNN Presidential Debate ’ on Thursday, June 27, at 9 p.m. ET on CNN, or watch it simulcast on USA TODAY via YouTube .

Fox News announced it would present “ extensive live coverage ” of the CNN presidential debate across all its platforms, including the “FOX News Democracy 2024: CNN Presidential Debate” from 9–11 p.m./Eastern Daylight Saving Time. ABC News announced it would be showing “‘Battle for the White House’ and ABC News’ Presentation of the CNN Presidential Debate” on ABC New Live and streamed on Hulu on Thursday from 7 p.m.-12 a.m. Other networks like  NewsNation  will also show the debate with pre- and post-debate analysis. 

While networks won’t be able to add their commentary during the debate, many plan to have programs before and after where they can provide their own color. Fox News, for example, has already taken a disapproving tone of the debate, with host Sean Hannity telling debate moderators and CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash to “get their network in check,” referring to it as “Fake CNN.”
