Combatting Trauma in Undocumented Children with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Personal experience fuels briana dominguez's research on using trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy with undocumented, unaccompanied children.

female student standing facing camera against Touro backdrop holding two framed awards

Briana Dominguez graduated from Touro University’s Graduate School of Social Work last month. She was awarded the school’s Special Recognition Research Award for her research project examining the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with undocumented children in New York City. She presented her findings at the National Academy of Medicine’s annual Social Work Student Night, where graduate students from NYC social work schools present their work that addresses physical, mental, or public health issues.

What did you learn in your research about therapy for undocumented children?

I learned that, unfortunately, there is very little research on Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) with undocumented, unaccompanied children (UUC). This is unfortunate, since these children are moved about from one place to another until they are placed with a sponsor, and then they are forgotten about. There are attorneys willing to assist them pro bono with immigration legal issues; however, the children become even more traumatized because they have to talk about their experiences without a chance to process their trauma.

Why go to Touro’s Graduate School of Social Work and study resources for this population?

I came to the U.S. with my mom from Mexico when I was a toddler, so I have experienced many of the challenges immigrants face here. In college I volunteered as an interpreter at a law school clinic that represented minors in Special Immigrant Juvenile Status cases (SIJS) in immigration and family courts. Learning about the minors' life experiences, I realized how fortunate I was to come with a parent and to become documented. I wondered why there weren't more resources for them and felt I needed to do something. So I decided to pursue graduate school in social work and now I think I was destined to be part of Touro. Touro taught me there is more to social work than just case management. Touro's clinical focus put me on the right track for my career.

What lessons did you take away from researching unaccompanied children?

Unaccompanied children come to the U.S. mostly from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. They have experienced trauma, dislocation, and loss. Without a parent or legal guardian they are at greater risk of having post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other symptoms, such as depression and anxiety from events related to their migration. They may have passed through regions considered the most dangerous, with violence from cartels that target children for kidnapping and ransom. In New York City, these children are suffering and at risk, but there are few studies on trauma work and evidence-based intervention models with this population. Policy and services in New York City, or recommendations to improve their mental health through social work interventions are sorely lacking.

What are your future plans? Do you expect to work with children and families?

Children are resilient and with the right services you get to see them heal and thrive. Most children want to be heard and have someone there to believe them. I want to use  TF-CBT with undocumented children and am very lucky to be working now at the Family Wellness Program at Children’s Aid, where I use this model to provide trauma-informed services to parents and children affected by intimate partner violence. I serve mostly Spanish-speaking families. This is a great opportunity to use the TF-CBT model in both English and Spanish. Eventually, I hope to open an organization to serve unaccompanied undocumented children. I imagine a community center where the children can feel safe, wanted and cared for, but also receive therapy and legal help.

Already applied?

If you’ve applied for the first intake of 2025, here are some key milestones you’ll need to be aware of.

Industry supporting PhD research

Shoulder injuries can be devastating when it comes to an elite swimmer’s career, causing costly time out from training and sometimes even spelling the end of a sporting journey. But that’d a problem that Alec McKenzie hopes to be able to prevent, with his PhD research that's in partnership with the Queensland Academy of Sport and Swimming Australia. “I don’t think what I’m doing would be possible without that industry funding and support, Alec says. Alec explains that to complete his research without the partnership with Queensland Academy of Sport would be nearly impossible. “I’m going to need 100-plus elite swimmers, the higher level, the better,” he says.

Australian Government Research Training Program

The Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) provides funding to Australian universities to support both domestic and international candidates undertaking a PhD or research degree program. Support provided may include tuition fee offsets, stipends and allowances.

Inclusive leadership keeps child welfare workers on the job

Concept of inclusive leadership featuring diverse figures shaking hands.

By BERT GAMBINI

Published July 29, 2024

Qi Zhou.

Child welfare systems have historically dealt with the challenges of high employee turnover, but developing a workplace characterized by inclusive leadership is one way to keep workers on the job and maintain uninterrupted services for children and their families, according to a new study by researchers in the School of Social Work.

When leaders are more inclusive, child welfare workers are less likely to experience workplace racial discrimination and more likely to stay in their positions and with their agencies, according to Qi Zhou, a social work graduate student at UB and the corresponding author of the study published in the Journal of Social Service Research.

“The compounding impact of high turnover of child welfare workers makes improving workforce retention a priority,” says Zhou.

The study’s novel approach looks at the issue of high turnover by investigating how administrators can contribute to improving retention, a view not widely taken in previous research that instead has surveyed employees rather than their managers.

High turnover increases workloads, decreases productivity and disrupts services, as agencies assign new workers — from a reduced staff — to additional cases. Turnover also hinders development of a diverse child welfare workforce that’s serving an increasingly diverse population of children.

“Individuals with minoritized social identities may be ignored and marginalized,” says Zhou. “But when employees work with inclusive leaders, they are more likely to have perceptions of inclusion and fewer perceptions of discrimination.

“Inclusive leaders respond to and manage discrimination by treating all group members in equitable and supportive ways,” Zhou adds. “These leaders also serve as role models, as employees learn inclusive behaviors from inclusive leaders.”

Zhou says managers can work toward inclusive leadership by satisfying within their agencies two basic human needs: belongingness and uniqueness.

Those needs extend from research conducted in social psychology. When workers become immersed in a group they feel a sense of belongingness, but that feeling should come with an appreciation for an employee’s unique personality.

Words and actions are critical to inclusive leadership, according to Zhou.

“Leaders should be proactive and welcome different perspectives,” she says. “An open office, seeking employee input and creating forums to share viewpoints are all important components to inclusive leadership, but similar steps can lead to an equally important inclusive climate, such as modifying policies across the organization in ways that enhance inclusive leadership.”

The study was conducted with Jangmin Kim, assistant professor of social work at UB, and Annette Semanchin Jones, associate professor of social work who also directs the school’s PhD program. Researchers analyzed secondary data collected from nearly 2,500 child welfare workers across three public child welfare agencies and examined the direct and indirect impacts of inclusive leadership on workers’ intentions to remain with their agencies.

“This research can serve as an important addition to previous studies that have proposed models using job rotation and talent management as methods that support inclusive leadership building,” says Zhou.

On your way to a satisfying career, you will study specialized social work courses, society and social arrangements, human behaviour and development, human services provision and counselling approaches and techniques to name a few core study areas.

You will be supervised by a qualified social worker for the duration of your field placements.

In some situations, it may be possible to negotiate a workplace-based field placement.

Placements will be sourced in your area of choice where possible.

Students living in remote or rural areas may have limited choices depending on the availability of organisations within their local area and may have to travel.

You will become highly proficient in all core areas of social work theory and practice, develop critical thinking and reflective skills and be prepared for practice grounded in the values and ethics of the profession - social justice, diversity, equity and a commitment to the rights and needs of the people with whom you work.

Note: Progression to the Honours program is dependent upon satisfying eligibility requirements.

Attendance information

If you intend to study part-time, it must be noted that the workplace placements are to be completed within a full-time study load. Students will need to be available full-time to attend 1000 hours of professional practice education placements in Years 3 and 4 as follows:

  • 3012HSV Social Work Field Placement 1 (30 credit points)
  • 4012HSV Social Work Field Placement 2 (30 credit points)

The field placements must be completed over two calendar years in accordance with Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (AWSEAS). The two compulsory field placements are completed in full-time mode and students must complete a minimum of 1000 hours of placement through the entirety of the program. In the case of extenuating circumstances only, placement days per week may be negotiated but must still fit within AASW accreditation guidelines. This will not change the number of hours in total that are required to be completed overall - therefore, placement may end after the scheduled University trimester end date.

Some of the courses in this program may be run in an intensive block format. It is important to check course profiles and your timetable carefully to ensure that all course requirements are fully understood.

Note the campus offerings for core social work courses in third and fourth year:

  • 3005HSV Social Work in Health and Mental Health - offered at Logan campus and Gold Coast blended only
  • 3023HSV Working with Family Violence - offered online. An on-campus offering will be available at Gold Coast or Logan campus
  • 3036HSV Social Work 1 - offered online only
  • 4002HSV Critical Reflective Practice - offered online only.

This program includes compulsory study in Trimester 3 of Year 3.

The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) is offered full-time on-campus at the Gold Coast and Logan campuses.

Distance Education

All social work students are required to attend at least 20 days on campus throughout their full period of study. This is a non-negotiable requirement of all AASW accredited social work programs in Australia. Students can enrol into the Distance Education offering of the program and will be able to complete the program off-campus by distance learning via our online learning management system with the exception of field placement and four compulsory five-day face-to-face intensive on-campus courses.

As a Distance Education student, your online studies may include coursework, readings, research, discussions and other course related study. You should check the minimum computer specifications for studying online before considering applying for the Distance Education offering of this program.
