Most noteworthy, Almora is situated in the Himalayan mountain region. Due to this, trains cannot travel directly to Almora. Consequently, Kathgodam is the last town station accessible by trains before the mountain range begins.

The trip from Lucknow to kathgodam is quite a lively experience. I have always ensured the reservation of my seats beforehand. So, my train journey begins from Lucknow railway station. As the train undergoes motion and leaves the Lucknow railway station, my excitement begins to rise. Moreover, as the train gathers speed, a thrilling feeling overtakes me.

My train journey from Lucknow to Kathgodam is probably 8-10 hours duration. However, I enjoy every minute of it in spite of the journey being so long. Furthermore, all along the journey, one can purchase items of food and drinks. I almost always purchase meals and refreshments at least twice in the journey.

When slumber overtakes me, I make use of the sleeping berth. I personally find sleeping on the train berth very comfortable. When I wake after a deep sleep, mountains are visible from a distance. Moreover, as the train approaches Kathgodam with menacing speed, the view of mountains gets bigger and bigger. Also, my amusement greatly rises as I see the Himalayas draw closer. Finally, as the train stops at Kathgodam, my delightful train journey comes to an end.

A Journey by Train Essay/Paragraph

During last summer vacation, I went on a family trip to Puri with my family. This was my first long journey by train. We reached the Howrah railway station with all our luggage quite early. The train departed from Howrah at around 9 o’clock in the morning. When I looked outside everything was running behind, I loved that scene. The train was moving quite fast. The whole train was crowded.

After boarding, we had our breakfast. I always prefer a window seat, because I can enjoy beautiful nature from there. I was impressed by the beauty of the landscape. Watching the beautiful natural scenes outside gave me extreme happiness. The train finally reached the Puri station at 6 o’clock in the evening. It was an exciting train journey.

Short Essay on A Journey by Train

Train journeys are always very exciting. We get to meet a lot of new people. Two weeks back had a train journey. The name of the train was Howrah-Dhanbad Black Diamond Express. My destination was Asansol. The train departed from Howrah around 6.40 in the morning. The weather was pleasant and I took a window seat.

Most of the passengers inside the train compartment were either reading a newspaper or sleeping. I started reading one of my favourite novels. The constant yelling of the hawkers forced me to close the book and look out of the window. Around 8.30 in the morning I bought a cup of coffee and a packet of biscuits from a hawker. Having small sips in the coffee concentrated on the visuals and images that changed rapidly outside the train compartment.

I noticed that concrete jungle have paved its way to lush green fields and ponds with trees surrounding them. Farmers were tilling children were going to school through the mud track. The ambiance outside was serene and in complete contrast with the atmosphere inside the train.

Introduction:

Once I read a poem. I still remember some of  its lines as follows:

“All of the sights of the hill and the plain Fly as thick as driving rain; And ever again, in the wink of an eye Painted stations whistle by.” (From A Railway Carriage-RL Stevenson)

A journey by a speeding train is an exciting experience. The modern age seems to be obsessed with speed. So people prefer to travel by the railways than by road.

Description of the Journey:

One day, my father announced that we were going to visit Shantiniketan during the winter holidays. I was simply thrilled. On the scheduled day, we reached Howrah station in the morning. The Shantiniketan Express stood majestically at the platform. The station was humming with the din and bustle. There were rings of people before the ticket counters. We entered a compartment and settled down for the journey. I managed a seat beside a window. Soon the signal was green at the far end of the platform. Within a minute, the train began to move. We glided out of the station. Then it picked up speed.

As the train thundered on, I surrendered my ears to the rattle of the train wheels. They were making rickety-rackety sounds when they rolled over the tracks. I looked outside through the window to get a view of the Nature outside. The train was passing by harvested fields, meadows, brooklets, and small ponds. Through the window, the world outside looked like a motion picture. Everything looked very bright and pleasant in the morning sunshine.

I looked about my compartment. Father was flipping through a magazine. Mother was chatting with an elderly couple. The hawkers and vendors were selling various foodstuffs. A beggar was singing a song while begging. In the meantime, the train reached at Guskara station. After half an hour it reached Bolpur.

My Feelings:

I got spellbound to see the fantastic wild beauty of nature through the window. The greatness of God manifested in nature’s creations. I remembered some lines of a poem-

“The true pleasing spirits sight’s That may breed true love’s delights” (Nicholas Breton)

The breeze was gentle, fresh, glorious, and a pleasure to breathe. It was pouring into our compartment from outside. I sometimes lost my sense of individuality and seemed to expand through the window. Thus, I wanted to establish a magical link with nature.

Conclusion:

Thus ended my first train journey. This journey was so pleasant that l experienced an intense high.

Essay on My First Journey by Train in 500 Words

Travelling by train is so much fun, cosy, and interesting. Indian railways have made intercity and interstate journeys so interesting and smooth. My first journey by train was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget.

My First Journey by Train

My first journey by train was from Delhi to Dehradun. This was a 6-hour 20-minute journey with my family, where we all laughed, ate lunch, and watched the beauty of the Ganga Plains.

When I saw the New Delhi Railway Station, I had a mixed feeling of excitement and anxiety, nervousness and exhilaration. Everyone at the station was in a hurry, the platform was filled with passengers waiting for their train, and the classic Indian Railway announcement was over the speakers.

As I stepped off the train in Dehradun, a sense of achievement swept through me. I was amazed not only by the destination but also by the amazing journey. My wanderlust was sparked by this first train trip, which was a treasure trove of experiences that left me with lifelong memories.

Advantages of Journey by Train

  • Trains let you stretch out and sleep on long journeys, unlike buses or cars.
  • There isn’t a luggage limitation. Unlike flying, where there is a weight limit, travelling by rail allows one to bring as much luggage as they desire.
  • Long trips are made more comfortable by the restrooms on trains.
  • On a train, one can work or study in comfort using a laptop. As a result, the time spent travelling can be used effectively.
  • Trains are much more cost-effective than taxis and aeroplanes. It is possible to travel large distances at a low price.

Disadvantages of Journey by Train

  • The requirement to arrange the trip and purchase tickets several days in advance is one of the main drawbacks of taking the train. This is not like travelling by bus or vehicle, where one can make plans and start the journey the next day.
  • Purchasing a ticket might be rather demanding. When purchasing tickets at the train station, customers must wait in queue for hours. Purchasing train tickets online also takes a lot of time because the railway booking website might occasionally become quite slow owing to high usage.
  • Although there are restrooms and washrooms on the trains, they are not as sanitary and clean as they ought to be.
  • There are several reasons why trains are frequently delayed. This can be very tiresome and irritating.
  • Train travel takes far longer than aeroplane travel. For people who have an urgent need to get somewhere, it is not a good alternative.

Travelling by train has its benefits and drawbacks. While making advance plans, purchasing tickets, and adhering to rigorous train schedules might be annoying, they also have certain benefits, such as comfortable travel and efficient use of time. I truly enjoy taking train trips, having taken several of them.

Travelling the train is always fun. They’ve always thrilled me. I have travelled by rail ever since I was a small child. My mother’s folks lived in Bihar, while we stayed in Delhi. We always travelled to Bihar by night train. We made the twice-yearly trip to see them, and I always looked forward to it since I liked the train ride just as much as I loved spending time with my grandparents. My sister and I had a terrific day together, and she was equally as happy about it.

Long and Short Essays on Journey by Train for Students and Kids in English

We have given below one brief essay on the topic composed of 500 words and another brief piece comprising 100-150 words.

Long Essay on Train Journey 500 words in English

Journey by Train essay is usually given to classes 7, 8, 9, and 10.

A train journey is one of the most exciting travel experiences. It can usually be of two types, short trips and long, overnight tours. Children are very fond of train journeys because of the pure pleasure of getting window seats. These days, people prefer traveling via airplanes because it is time-saving. But going by plane gets boring and monotonous. Train journeys are a relief from the monotony.

On local trains which are meant for covering short distances, children lustily crave for the variety of available snacks. Regional trains in India are overcrowded and hardly offer any place to sit. Despite the apparent lack of comfort, they are life-sustaining forces for many people. Not only are they the cheapest but also the fastest mode of transport for many routes.

Local train journeys are every day for almost every stratum of society. The crowd is so universal that one can spot people belonging to the most meager professions and people belonging to high-paid jobs. Beggars, managers, midwives, and maidservants, everybody avails the local trains because of their sheer advantages.

Local trains have their attractions. We often marvel at the scenery fleeting past us, the ever inconspicuous crowd, and the vendors who never cease boarding the train with delicacies. They sell salted peanuts in small pouches, toffees of varied tastes and flavors, and other “namkeens.” Children often pester their parents to buy them goodies because they can hardly control their urges.

Coming to overnight journeys, trains are the safest mode of transport for that purpose. While traveling within the country, one must avail of passengers because they are affordable and comfortable. Traveling with infants and kids becomes more accessible in trains. Train journeys offer the serendipity to stare outside the windows for countless hours. It is indeed a source of great joy as we watch the moving sceneries. Hills, mountains, rivers, and fields rush past us, and all we can do is marvel at their beauty.

It is a familiar feeling to run outside and enjoy the luscious fields and grasslands. Children often tell their parents that they wish the train would stop and run miles on the green rice and cornfields. The urban set up has deprived most of us the fortune to appreciate greenery, and train journeys are a welcome retreat from pollution and noise in the cities.

At night, we are mesmerized by the starry sky outside our windows and the dark alleys that seem to lure us into exploring them. Youngsters find it very adventurous and wish they had one opportunity to explore those mysterious streets. Sleeping on trains is a task the children do not like. However, the mild motion lulls them to relax, and they get their much-awaited rest.

Certain trains offer food to their passengers. The quality of the food varies, but mostly, it is good. However, the excitement to rush to the platforms to buy food when the train halts at designated stations is both nerve-wracking and enjoyable. Train journeys are thus the sweetest and most exciting travel experience, and one must try it at least once in a lifetime.

Essay about Journey by Train

Short Essay on Train Journey 150 words in English

One should preserve their fond memories about train journeys, and it is bound to bring a smile on his face later in life. Apart from snacks and beautiful vista, trains offer co-passengers who become friends. There is nothing more marvelous than having a pair of friendly co-passengers who accompany us, talk to us and laugh with us.

The journey teaches us valuable lessons. The co-passengers show us how in the mission of our lives, we come across some kindred souls who make the distance bearable and accompany us. We lose them to the everlasting flow, and in the end, we walk alone.

The Scenic Beauty

One of the most captivating aspects of a train journey is the stunning scenery that unfolds outside your window. Whether you’re crossing vast landscapes, traversing rolling hills, or gliding alongside rivers, the views are often breathtaking. For example, a train ride through the Swiss Alps offers panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks and lush valleys.

Experts in travel and tourism highlight the scenic beauty of train journeys as a major attraction. Many travelers choose train travel specifically to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the regions they pass through.

The Historical Significance

Trains are more than just a mode of transportation; they are a symbol of progress and history. The construction of railroads played a pivotal role in shaping countries and connecting distant regions. For instance, the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia is a marvel of engineering that spans thousands of miles, linking Moscow to Vladivostok.

Historians emphasize the historical significance of train travel. Trains have been central to the development of nations and the movement of goods and people.

The Nostalgia Factor

There’s something nostalgic about a journey by train. It harks back to a time when travel was more leisurely, and the journey was as important as the destination. The sound of the train’s whistle, the clickety-clack of the wheels, and the cozy compartments evoke a sense of nostalgia for days gone by.

Literature and art often romanticize train travel, capturing its nostalgic charm. Films, books, and songs have celebrated the allure of trains and the emotions they evoke.

The Sense of Connection

A train journey provides a unique sense of connection to the places you pass through. Unlike air travel, where you often land in large airports far from the heart of a city, trains take you right into the heart of towns and cities. You can witness daily life unfolding outside your window, from bustling markets to serene countryside.

Travel enthusiasts praise train travel for its ability to create a deeper connection to the regions and people you encounter. It allows you to engage with local culture and experience the authentic essence of a place.

Environmental Benefits

Trains are also an environmentally friendly mode of transportation. They produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile compared to cars and airplanes. Trains are energy-efficient and contribute to reducing air pollution and congestion on the roads.

Environmental experts emphasize the sustainability of train travel as a way to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation. Choosing trains over other modes of travel can have a positive impact on the environment.

Conclusion of Essay on Journey By Train

In conclusion, a journey by train is more than just a way to get from one place to another; it’s a captivating experience that offers a window into the world’s beauty, history, and nostalgia. The scenic beauty, historical significance, and sense of connection make train travel a unique adventure. Moreover, the environmental benefits of train travel make it a responsible choice for those who care about our planet. So, next time you have the opportunity, consider embarking on a journey by train, and let the rails take you on a magical ride through both space and time.

A Paragraph On A Journey By Train For Children

Essays on train journeys are an interesting topic that can be composed by students of all classes. But, students of smaller classes need guidance in smaller sentence concentration. Here is a small paragraph on a journey by train for children:

Different modes of transportation provide unique experiences, but nothing beats the thrill of a train ride. Most people prefer train travel because it is a less expensive mode of transportation. Train rides are my favourite mode of transportation because they are so comfortable. Some people enjoy night train rides because they allow them to arrive at their destination overnight. I enjoy day-train rides because I enjoy looking out the window at the scenery. It’s a completely different experience to read a book or listen to music while sitting near the window. Train rides are always enjoyable for me.

Train journey essays are one of the most common topics given to students as holiday homework. Below is a journey by train paragraph that can give you ideas as to how to write a train journey essay for your school assignments:

Train rides, no matter how short or long they are, are something that we all look forward to. Last week, I had the opportunity to travel by train from Howrah to Bandel to meet one of my friends. I had planned to take the 10:30 a.m. train, but when I woke up on the day of the trip was pouring heavily. I had given up hope, but the rain god showed mercy on us, and it stopped raining.

One of my other friends and I managed to board the 11:00 a.m. train. It was not rush hour, so the train was not crowded. I quickly got myself a window seat to enjoy the greenery of Kolkata’s outskirts. The rain had made the weather pleasant, which was a bonus and made our journey more enjoyable. We arrived at our destination after nearly an hour, though I was sad to see it end soon.

Experiencing new things and being able to write those experiences in words is a very important skill that everyone should learn. Below is a train journey essay for class 3, which gives you a brief idea about the topic:

We’ve all travelled by train at some point in our lives. Since India is a developing country with a large middle-class population, train travel is the most convenient and safest option for them. Almost all routes have trains, making it easier for people to get to their destination in one trip.

Pros and Cons Of Train Journey

Train journeys have certain advantages as well as disadvantages such as:

Pros of Train Journey

  • Relaxing journeys : Trains are known for their spaciousness and comfort. We don’t have to sit in an uncomfortable position for the longer duration of the journey, as we would on a bus. We can book an entire berth to ourselves to comfortably sit or even lie down.
  • Beautiful scenery : Train rides on hilly routes have enchanting beauty. Whether a regular train or a toy train, the view of hills all around is sure to captivate everyone.
  • Unlimited luggage : There is a limit to the amount of luggage that can be carried on a plane. Train travel, on the other hand, is not the same.
  • Long journeys : Train journeys are usually preferred over car and bus journeys because they are more comfortable. Furthermore, train travel is ideal for people suffering from motion sickness, as driving or taking a bus is inconvenient.

Cons Of Train Journey

  • Ticketing : Even though bookings open four months before the date of travel, popular destinations’ tickets are always on a waiting list, causing inconvenience. Furthermore, because the majority of the process is now done online, it becomes difficult for people who do not have access to a system.
  • Excess time : If you have an emergency and need to get somewhere quickly, taking the train is not the best option. Train journeys can take up to two days to reach some destinations, making them unsuitable for working professionals.
  • Inadequate sanitisation : Train washrooms appear perfect when the train leaves the boarding station, but as the journey progresses, the condition of the restrooms and basins are quite questionable!

These train journey essays will assist your child in making their content flow. They will be more aware of what to write and how to structure their thoughts in such essays. They will be more aware of their surroundings and interested in everything around them the next time they go on a journey like this.

1. Why are train journeys the best?

Rail travel is both comfortable and exciting for children. If you are travelling to a hill station, they can get a better look at the mountains and hills, making it a memorable experience. Train journeys come under an inexpensive mode of transport also.

2. What makes train journeys so comfortable?

Train rides are very comfortable because we can sit or even lie down comfortably on our berth. Furthermore, it does not feel like being stuck in a chair with no freedom of movement, as in a plane or bus.

3. What precautions should you take while travelling on a train?

Some people have been seen standing near the train’s gate, which is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. One should not smoke inside the train compartment. Now, taking COVID precautions is mandatory in every kind of journey. Check your luggage before boarding and deboarding a train.

Train journeys are amazing in many ways, and kids enjoy them thoroughly. Making kids write an essay on a train journey is a good way to stir them creatively. It will make them well-versed with the nuances of sentence construction also.

Train journeys are both exciting and memorable. My first train journey was when I was in the 2nd standard, traveling to my aunt’s wedding in Dehradun. It was a night journey, and we boarded the train with eager anticipation. With family and relatives, the journey was filled with laughter, games, and delicious train food.

As morning broke, I gazed out of the window, captivated by the picturesque scenery. The lush green fields, the rising sun, and the distant hills created a mesmerizing view. This train journey left an indelible mark on my memory, combining the joy of travel with the beauty of nature.

Short essay on ‘a journey by train’ – essay 1 (200 words).

Train journeys are super fun, especially when traveling by train with a group of friends. One of my most memorable journeys by train was my journey from Delhi to Jaipur. It was a school trip, and we were all really excited about it. We had numerous plans for the trip and were especially looking forward to having a great time on our way.

We all reached the railway station by 6 in the morning, and the train ride started within a few minutes. I occupied the window seat to see the view outside. The view of the green fields, muddy roads, and huts on the way was delightful. My best friend sat beside me, and we chatted as we looked outside.

Soon, it was time for breakfast. I loved the cutlets and bread served on the train. We also had hot tomato soup after having a plate of bread and cutlets. After breakfast, we all decided to play antakshari . Playing antakshari in large groups is always fun. Our teachers also joined us, thereby adding to the fun. We played antakshari for the rest of the journey, and before we even knew it, we had reached our destination. It was a great experience. The company of my friends made this train journey all the more gleeful.

Essay on ‘A Journey by Train to Shimla’ – Essay 3 (300 words)

Train journeys hold a unique charm, especially when they lead to enchanting destinations like Shimla. However, what makes the journey even more captivating is the special toy train that runs from Kalka to Shimla, winding through breathtaking landscapes. A trip to Shimla remains incomplete without experiencing this iconic train ride. Thus, we planned our Shimla trip well in advance and secured our tickets for this much-talked-about train journey.

Our Journey to Shimla by Toy Train

During last year’s autumn break, we embarked on a memorable journey to Shimla. We began our travel by bus to Kalka, the starting point of our adventure with the toy train. Initially, I expected it to be just another train journey, offering glimpses of mountains and valleys. However, it turned out to be an exhilarating and extraordinary experience. Throughout our journey, we found ourselves immersed in the lap of nature, not merely observing the mountains, valleys, and lush greenery, but feeling like an integral part of this natural wonder as the train gracefully traversed the mountains.

Spanning a duration of 5-6 hours, this journey was filled with thrills and excitement. The route featured a multitude of tunnels and bridges that added to the allure. There were more than 100 tunnels and approximately 800 bridges along the route. I remained glued to the window seat, relishing the splendid vistas outside. At one point, the train made a brief stop at a quaint station, affording us a brief ten-minute break to explore.

Throughout the journey, my parents and brother shared in my delight, finding it as enjoyable as I did. We chose the same train for our return journey, unwilling to miss out on a second opportunity to savor this captivating experience.

Undoubtedly, this train journey stands out as the most remarkable one in my life. My deep love for nature made this journey even more special. I sincerely hope for a chance to traverse this enchanting route once more, as it left an indelible mark on my heart.

Essay on ‘My First Train Journey’ – Essay4 (400 words)

My First Train Journey

My very first train journey was an unforgettable experience that I embarked on when I was in the 2nd standard. It was a special trip to attend my maternal aunt’s wedding in Dehradun. As soon as the news of the wedding spread, excitement and joy filled our home. My mother began planning her outfits, while my father organized our travel arrangements. We decided to travel by train, accompanied by a few relatives, marking my maiden voyage on a train.

Planning the Train Journey

Train journeys require meticulous planning for a smooth and enjoyable trip. My parents carefully studied the available trains on our route to select the most convenient option. We booked our tickets well in advance, packed our bags, and ensured that all necessary arrangements were in place for our journey.

The Journey Begins

Our train journey commenced as a night voyage. We arrived at the railway station on time, settled into our seats, and, within a few minutes, the train began its journey.

Fun on the Way

As we greeted our relatives and settled in for the long journey, there was an air of excitement. Many of us hadn’t seen each other in months, so there was plenty to catch up on. I sat with my cousins, and we eagerly planned to make the most of this train journey. They had brought along board games, and we engaged in an entertaining one.

After a few rounds of the game, it was time for dinner. The food served on the train was surprisingly delectable. Following dinner, I found a cozy spot by the window. Despite the darkness of the night, I enjoyed the rhythmic sounds of the moving train, a novel experience for me.

As everyone finished their meals, we decided to play antakshari . Our relatives enthusiastically joined in, and we sang songs and played antakshari for an hour before it was time to rest.

A Scenic Morning

The next morning, I awoke early and was greeted by a stunning view outside the window. The lush green fields, the rising sun, the distant hills, and the charming huts along the way — everything appeared exceptionally beautiful. This scenic morning view was the highlight of my train journey.

In hindsight, my first train journey was incredibly exciting and fascinating. I cherished every moment of it, and the delightful company of my cousins added an extra layer of enjoyment to the experience.

Long Essay on Journey by Train

Essay on ‘a memorable journey by train’ – essay 4 (500 words).

Introduction

I have gone on many train journeys with my family as well as friends. Travelling by train is comfortable and enjoyable. I always prefer train journeys over road trips for the experience they offer. I have made great memories on these trips. While I have enjoyed all my train journeys, my train travel from Delhi to Goa is the closest to my heart.

Journey from Delhi to Goa

I went for a trip to Goa with my classmates when I was in seventh standard. The trip was planned by the school. After much persuasion, my parents agreed to send me on the trip. Most of my friends also got the consent from their parents. We planned to do a lot of fun things on the trip.

Besides, site-seeing and having fun with friends on the trip, I was also excited about the train journey. The train journey from Delhi to Goa was for around one and a half day. This was the longest journey I had ever gone on. I was really looking forward to it.

My parents dropped me to the station. They were a bit anxious as this was the first time I was travelling so far without them. My mother gave me last minute instructions and I nodded obediently as I eagerly awaited the train. We left from Delhi at around 5 in the evening. I sat by the window with one of my friends by my side.

Travelling with Friends

Travelling with friends is always fun. I had been to Jaipur, Nanital and Shimla with my friends. All these trips were planned by our school. We travelled by train on all these trips and had a lot of fun on the way but none of them involved so much travelling. Most of these were overnight journeys. But on our trip to Goa we spent one night and one and a half day in the train.

I kept sitting by the window for the first two-three hours of the journey. I loved the view outside. As it started getting dark, I joined my friends who were playing dumb charades. We kept playing this game until it was time for dinner. After having our dinner, we chatted until late night. We shared our experiences, narrated interesting stories and mimicked our teachers. It was all great fun. I slept comfortably at night and woke up late.

The breakfast was served almost immediately after I woke up. After having the breakfast, I went and stood by the train door which was half opened. The view outside was beautiful. I love nature and I can watch the trees, hills and the water bodies for hours. It soothes and pleases my senses and offers a delightful experience.

I kept standing there for a long time. One of my friends joined me there. We enjoyed the view and spoke about our love for travelling and nature. During the rest of the day, we played games, had food and chatted with each other. We reached Goa at around 11 at night.

This train journey was an awesome experience. I enjoyed it thoroughly and made several beautiful memories on the way.

A Journey by Train Essay

Experience of a Journey by Train

As a young kid, I usually jumped with enthusiasm whenever my parents planned a trip, as I loved travelling, especially by train. My journeys by train were always comfortable and unforgettable. I always looked forward to my vacations because that was the time when I got to visit my father’s ancestral home located in a remote village. Due to my father’s job, we were stationed in a town, and it was during my 10-day vacation that I was able to journey by train to meet my grandparents.

Normally, we start early in the morning as our train will leave at 7.30 am from Hasanpura station. Inside the train station, many porters circled my parents, demanding to carry our luggage. But we used to get past them to reach our platform and wait for a few minutes before the train arrived. Nonetheless, the wait is not dull as I get to observe many people around and listen to their chitter-chatter.

We kept our bags ready as we heard the announcement of the train arriving. After boarding the train and sitting near the window, I heard the station master blow the whistle and wave the green flag. Slowly, the train started moving, and once it left the platform, it sped up. From here begins my joyous ride on the train. The most exciting part of my train journey was the number of vendors that passed our berths, where I could eat some delicious snacks and buy some colouring books. The seat was spacious, and yet I jumped to the top berth to enjoy colouring or get a good sleep.

After some time, I sat by the window and took in the beautiful sights of the village. With blooming trees and working people on the fields, it was truly an attractive sight outside. If I were to travel by car or bus, I wouldn’t have been able to see these wonderful places as I easily became travel sick. But a journey by train enables me to enjoy each moment and experience.

A Journey by Train: Essay (500 Words) for College Students

The journey is always a pleasure, but the train journey is too much pleasure for me. I love the train journey a lot. I have traveled a lot with trains and found it’s really good for the body; it’s not boring at all. There is a minimum level of accident risk and high security for people. These are the top reasons that are why I love traveling on a train. Today I will share my last train journey experience with you. I was traveling from Sylhet to Chittagong, a long way.

My college got closed in the summer vacation and I decided to visit my sister’s home with two of my friends in Chittagong. Chittagong is a very beautiful beach and port city in Bangladesh. According to the plan, we hired a taxi and reach Sylhet railway station at 8 AM on a specific day. We bought three tickets for the next express train from Sylhet to Chittagong. We waited for about two hours on the platform for the train. We were lucky that we bought the ticket faster; otherwise, I found lots of people who had not got the ticket. They bought a standing ticket rather than a seat. The reason is that was a vacation and people were leaving cities to spend holidays with their family.

When the train came into the platform, it took almost ten minutes to find out seats. The seating plan was pretty much confusing. I took the window seat. Finally, the strain started with a whistle. I was really happy about it. We were gossiping about sports and current vacation planning. We were having a few plans for what to do in Chittagong. We planned to stay there for three days and enjoy the Patenga Beach and top spots in the city. We left the urban area within ten minutes and I was impressed to see the beauty outside.

Sylhet is a land of beauty and lots of tea gardens. If you visit the train, you can see the real beauty of this division. The government has set up the train route between a national park with huge natural resources and beauty. I just love to travel across this area with the train. After two hours of gossiping and talking. One of my friend’s sleep and one started reading a book. I was still watching the beauty outside. Then finally I was tired and thought to take a nap. I asked my friend to take care of our goods. I slept for about an hour.

Finally, after nine hours of a long journey, we reached in the Chittagong station. We hired a taxi and went to my sister’s home. This journey by train was really impressive for me. I will remember this day for a long time. I didn’t travel a lot with my friends that are why this journey was remarkable for me. I suggest everyone journey with a train and enjoy the real fun of traveling.

Journey by train is the most common thing in our ultra-modern civilization. It is also an enjoyable experience. Indeed, journey is always a pleasure to me. Whenever I go on a journey, my heart is filled with joy. But my greatest pleasure is a journey by train. It is ever exciting.

During the last autumn vacation, our school was closed for ten days. My uncle lives in Sylhet. He came home on leave. I requested him to take me to Sylhet. He agreed at this. My heart danced with joy to hear this because of I always like a journey by train.

The day was fixed. We reached the station in time and bought two tickets. The train was not yet in. The whole platform was a scene of great confusion and noise. It was crowded with passengers. Some were sitting near their luggage. Some were moving about Rickshaws; motor cars and all other conveyances were coming to the station with passengers. Coolies were running behind them. Vendors were crying out loudly to sell their goods. Then the train came in. We got into the second-class compartment. We occupied two comfortable seats in the compartment.

The time for the departure of the train was drawing near. Soon the warning bell rang. Just at 9.00 a.m., the second bell rang. The guard whistled and waved his flag. Then the train whistled loudly and slowly moved on. We now felt a great relief. My mind was full of joy. I looked outside through the window. The train ran at moderate speed. Then it crossed a bridge over a river with a clattering noise. Inside the train, the passengers were talking and hawkers were selling their goods. But outside there was the beauty of nature all around. I was thrilled to see the vast paddy fields. It was a great fun to see houses and trees slip backward from the moving train. Sometimes the train stopped at railway stations. The passengers got down and got into. Then the train started and passed through some villages. I saw the people doing something. All these things charmed me greatly.

At about 5.00 p.m. we reached our destination. Then we alighted from the train & went out of the station. My uncle's private car was waiting for us. We got into the car and reached my uncle's house in a few minutes,

I enjoyed the journey most. The journey gave me immense pleasure. It was really interesting. I shall never forget the sweet memory of this journey.

Composition on A Journey By Train

Introduction: Train is the longest vehicles on land. Its line is quite different from other roads. On the land journey, the train journey is both cheap and pleasant.

Occasion: One day my uncle asked me to spend the summer vacation at his residence in Jessore. Then I got a chance of making a journey by train from Khulna to Jessore.

Journey: On the 3rd day of the vacation I reached Khulna Railway Station at 8 am. I saw many passengers moving to and fro in the platform and waiting for the train. I stood in the queue to book a ticket. Fortunately, I booked a ticket for the second class compartment. When the counter master blew a whistle, the train arrived, I got into the second class compartment and took my seat beside the window.

Description: I was waiting when the train began to move. In time and with another signal the train started moving slowly. There I heard a hue and cry of the passengers. The terminal situation was a new experience for me. It was an Intercity Train which was bound for Rajshahi. It was the most speedy vehicle in the line. Passengers of different classes and tastes were traveling by train.

Sights enjoyed: When the train started running, some hawkers came to our compartment. Some passengers bought various things from them. I only bought a pocket comb. I saw some passengers in my compartment gossiping, reading newspapers, laughing and sitting silently. I thought of walking from compartment to compartment. I saw passengers of different cultures and traditions doing so. But the activities of all passengers were not my liking. In the next compartment, I saw a blind man singing a religious song with an old patterned harmonium. The passengers in that compartment were spell-bound to hear or listen to the song. The passengers gave him one or two takes as alms.

Sights outside the train: Coming back to my seat I kept casting my eyes outside the window. The speed of the train was not less than 45 km per hour. The trees and villages beside the train line seemed to be running backward at a great speed. I saw men, women, and children working together in the fields. The IRRI field looked charming. Some farmers were cultivating the land with pairs of bulls/cows.

An unlawful act in the train: Suddenly, there came the IT. or ticket collector. Every passenger showed him his respective ticket. Two teenagers failed to show their tickets. The T.T. out of rage rebuked them. They did not protest against it but bore it with tolerance. Then the T.T. cashed them saying. "Ticketless journey by train or any kind of vehicle is very offensive. You should not practice this sort of malpractice. Be obedient to law and lead a legal and lawful life, my boys." This advice came up to no help. When the TT. left, the so-called teenagers began to burst into laughter.

Charms: The train journey is more comfortable because the passengers receive no jolts in it. The train runs smoothly. Among the charms of traveling by train, I should mention the brief halts at wayside stations. The character of a station changes with the character of people. Speech and dress, manners and food are different as I pass from one place to another.

Destination: At about 10-30 am. the train reached Jessoremy destination. When the train stopped, I got down gently. Then I hired a rickshaw towards my uncle's residence. And thus my train journey ended.

Conclusion: I enjoyed the journey happily. I did not face any trouble on the way. So, the journey gave me an immense pleasure. Hence, the impact of the journey will remain ever memorable.

Want to see the best of Turkey? Try one of these 7 incredible train journeys

Turkey’s rail network remains one of its best-kept travel secrets, offering everything from scenic day trips to long-distance sleepers.

Train passing through a rural mountainside town

Turkey’s rail network remains one of the country’s best-kept tourism secrets, still rarely utilised by foreign travellers. A fast YHT (high-speed) network connects Istanbul with Eskişehir, Konya, Ankara and Sivas, but it’s the network’s older routes, cutting through rural Turkey, where it really shines for scenic, slow-travel journeys. Most routes open for bookings 30 or 15 days in advance.

1. Roses Express: İzmir to Isparta

This daily train is the prime route for classical history lovers. In total, it’s a 10-hour chug across the coastal Aegean plains and into the hill country of western Anatoli — but the joy is in hopping off periodically to explore the region’s ancient ruins. The train calls into Selçuk station, three miles east of the   UNESCO-listed Ephesus ruins, and Denizli station, jumping-off point for Pamukkale’s travertine terraces and Hierapolis ruins. Its final destination, Isparta, is the gateway to the   mountaintop ruins of Sagalassos. Tickets 320 TRY (£7.60).

2. Eastern Express: Ankara to Kars

The daily Eastern Express runs for 814 miles across high plateaus and the mountainous countryside of northeast Anatolia. During winter, when snow blankets the peaks and plains, this is one of Turkey’s most beautiful journeys. Most travellers board with their own picnic rather than using the basic dining car, settling in for the 26-hour journey in either Pullman seating or four-berth, shared-couchette sleeper compartments. From December to March, there are also three pricier Touristic Eastern Express departures a week, which only have two-berth private sleeper compartments and include stops for excursions in historic cities. Eastern Express tickets 400 TRY (£9.50), Touristic Eastern Express tickets from 6,000 TRY (£143).

3. Taurus Express: Konya to Adana

This passenger train uses the historic railway line blasted through the Taurus Mountains between 1904 and 1918, which scythes across the Cilician Gates mountain pass once crossed by Alexander the Great. Laid out originally to be the northern section of the Baghdad Railway, the line is rimmed by steep, forested slopes and deep gorges, via multiple tunnels, and travels over the 320ft-high stone Varda Viaduct, which featured in the 2012 Bond film Skyfall. The seven-hour, daily Taurus Express connects Konya with Adana, a good springboard for the castles and ruins of Turkey’s eastern Mediterranean. Tickets 200 TRY (£4.80).

3. Pamukkale Express: Eskişehir to Denizli

Connecting the vibrant arts-hub city of Eskişehir with Denizli for Pamukkale and Hierapolis, the nine-hour Pamukkale Express is a ringside seat for the rural heartland of northwest Anatolia. The northern section trails through valleys once ruled by the Iron Age Phrygian kings, while continuing south the landscape unfurls into wide areas of farmland backed by fir-forested hills. There are daily morning departures in both directions. Tickets 280 TRY (£6.70).

5. Lake Van Express: Ankara to Tatvan

There are two long-distance routes that make the most of southeast Anatolia’s vistas of raw, rock-pitted plateaus, rolling hills, vast lakes and sprawling orchards and farmland. Both cross the Karakaya Dam section of the Euphrates River via the 2,030-metre-long Euphrates Railway Bridge and are at their most scenic in spring and autumn. As on the Eastern Express, the dining car is basic, so most passengers pack their own food supplies for onboard picnics.

The twice-weekly Lake Van Express rolls for 775 miles on its 26-hour journey between Ankara and Tatvan, on the western edge of Lake Van. The lake (Turkey’s largest) sprawls for 1,435sq miles. Head to the city of Van, the springboard to exploring the country’s southeastern corner, and visit Lake Van’s prime attraction, the Armenian artistic masterpiece that is Akdamar Church. Travellers can choose between Pullman seating, four-berth shared couchette compartments and two-bed private sleeper cabins. Tickets from 420-1,590 TRY (£10-38).

6. South Express: Ankara to Diyarbakır

Meanwhile, the South Express meanders for 653 miles between Ankara and the walled city of Diyarbakır, which, with its ancient monuments, Kurdish culture and historic bridges spanning the Tigris River, serves as an excellent introduction to the rich heritage of the south east. The regular 22-hour version, which runs five times a week, costs a fraction of the price of the Touristic Diyarbakır Express — a 24-hour train running the same route, which departs once a month and includes stops for excursions — in the city of Malatya when heading east; and at Yolçatı (to visit Harput Castle), and the city of Kayseri when heading west. South Express seat tickets 355 TRY (£8.45), or 1,525 TRY (£36) for a two-bed private sleeper compartment; Touristic Diyarbakır Express tickets from 8,000 TRY (£191) for a two-bed private sleeper compartment.

7. Sivas-Samsun Railway

This eight-hour route connects the city of Sivas — studded with some of Turkey’s most glorious examples of 13th-century Seljuk-era architecture, with the Black Sea port of Samsun, where the Pontic tomb-haul of golden artifacts known as the Amisos Treasures are finally on display, in the new Samsun Museum. Running three times a week in both directions, the train lazily traverses hills patchworked with farms before winding its way past the Canık Mountains. Slow down and complete it in two stages, stopping in Amasya, where a cliff face dimpled with the tombs of Pontic kings watches over Ottoman houses lining the Yeşilırmak River below. Tickets 275 TRY (£6.50).

On the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, All the Train's a Stage

Martini in hand and pursuing another, I stumble to the bar—not because I’m drunk but because the bar itself is moving. I’m on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, Europe; specifically, in Bar Car 3674, swathed in sapphire velvet and buzzing with passengers in their black-tie best for cocktail hour. Outside, the landscape unfurls gradually, the industrial tableaus of France ’s heartland fading into fields baking under the summer sun. Golden hour has hit; onboard, cufflinks and jewels catch the light and shine. There’s a mirthful sparkle to the crowd, guests and crew alike, made even more apparent by our close quarters on the train. As I sidle past a woman in a sequined dress, our crystal coupes meet by chance in a delicate clink . She and I exchange introductions and share a proper toast: We’re finally here.

Here is the inaugural journey of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express (VSOE, for short) from Paris to Portofino, christened “ Two Legends Meet .” For this new itinerary, to become an annual summer affair, passengers spend one night aboard the iconic train as it rolls southward through the French countryside and along the Italian Riviera, and check in for a two-night stay at the princely Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino . This is the first time the VSOE is traveling to the Ligurian coast, and the occasion is well-commemorated onboard. Earlier that afternoon, I was presented an array of souvenirs, among them an amenity kit decorated with artwork of both the Eiffel Tower and Portofino Bay; inside were a schedule-slash-scrapbook outlining the long weekend plus a Kodak instant camera. We’re here to make memories.

With historic cabins and plush suites, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express stands at the pinnacle of luxury rail travel.

The historic train carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express are color-coded; the navy blue cars are the sleeper cars.

The train’s other fine touches, I was pleased to learn, are not exclusive to our trip, but staples of many other VSOE routes: the phalanx of white-gloved stewards who escorted me and my luggage to the handsome navy-and-cream carriages parked at Gare de l’Est; the elegant afternoon tea service and chilled bottle of Veuve Clicquot waiting for me in my cabin; the gleaming all-day bar captained by good-time ragazzi who cajoled me into a third espresso martini; and the baby grand piano where musicians Luigi de Gasperi and Filippo Cuomo Ulloa set the evening’s playful mood, serenading us with standards from the great American, French, and Italian songbooks, inviting one and all to join in.

At luxury hotels bolted into the ground, I’ve come to expect these crossed t’s and dotted i’s, sometimes so baseline as to be boring. But the five-star service aboard this sumptuous auberge on wheels, the novelty and literal ride of it, can make even the most worldly travelers feel giddy. (As I explored the sleeper cars, I overheard a passenger: “Caviar! On a train!”) It’s a very slick production, executed with aplomb by the train’s staff, 47 people strong and stylish in their azure blue livery. All the stewards I met were uniformly friendly, game for anything: Simone practiced his Filipino with me as I fumbled my Italian with him; Vanessa expertly directed me in an Instagram video before we departed Paris. “Lean outside the train,” she said. “We have to get the shot!”

Assigned to my carriage was Eduardo, a chipper Venetian who explained the features of my cabin—the plush couchette that becomes a bed; the wash basin stocked with fragrant Officine Universelle Buly toiletries—and penciled into his notebook when I’d like my wake-up call (a knock on my door) and oat milk cappuccino in the morning. For cocktail hour, I changed into my tuxedo and Eduardo greeted me, “Buona sera, Mr. Bond.” He took my photo using the Kodak instant camera. The crew fluently speaks the universal language of good vibes.

As part of the VSOE’s “Two Legends Meet” itinerary, guests check into a two-night stay at the princely Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino.

I finish a fourth martini just as I’m called to L’Etoile du Nord, one of the train’s three dining cars, for supper at 9:30 p.m. (After all, this is France .) The night’s fabulously fishy Franco-Italian menu is inspired by the itinerary, composed by Paris-based star chef Jean Imbert , who has been the VSOE’s culinary maestro since 2022. He’s onboard tonight too, traveling with everyone else to Splendido, where he’ll conduct the gala dinner that will welcome us to Italy. Also spotted, in the bar car: the French artist and photographer JR who is designing the interiors of L’Observatoire , a to-be-unveiled private carriage joining the rake in 2025 as the train’s latest upgrade. However, while feasting on plump langoustine and delicate sea bass, washing it all down with more Champagne as our chariot rollicks past the lights of Dijon and Avignon twinkling in the inky night, I think to myself, It can’t get better than this.

After dessert and coffee, we all pile back into Bar Car 3674, the train’s thrumming heart. The mingling and revelry wears on into the wee hours. To the tune of much laughter, the piano, and percussive cocktail shakers, I meet an array of characters from the world over: a very merry couple from South Dakota , on their second journey aboard the VSOE in two months; a patriarch celebrating his and his twin’s 70th birthday, with the whole clan from Las Vegas in tow; a German wedding and events planner on a scouting trip for clients, who asks me, winking, “Do you love your job too?”

The glee is plastered onto my face, I know. My cheeks hurt from grinning. I have dreamed of riding the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express for years. From what I gather, many others onboard can say the same. Maybe that’s the source of that mirthful sparkle I spotted earlier. Gratitude glitters. At nearly three in the morning, as the musicians and barmen reprise “O Sole Mio,” I return to my compartment. I fall into bed, still smiling, and wake up to a knock on my door and the smell of buttery croissants. The dream continues.

Life onboard the VSOE is a very slick production, executed with aplomb by the train’s staff, 47 people strong, all polished and friendly, ready to show you a good time.

“This is a dream of mine too,” says Pascal Deyrolle, the general manager of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, as we discuss what it took to make “Two Legends Meet”—the equipment, the timetables, the permits, the stars that had to align. Tall and gregarious, Deyrolle is onboard to ensure the inaugural journey to Portofino goes smoothly, taking notes for a fine-tuned follow-up next year (a finer guardian of the VSOE, they have yet to invent; he began his three-decade career with Belmond as a steward on the train).

But Deyrolle is also here to simply enjoy it. He pushed for this new route during its development, he explains, having sentimental attachments to both Splendido and the night trains he took in his youth, traveling to the South of France with his family in the summertime. That kind of slow travel, he says, disconnecting from the whirl of daily life and reconnecting with loved ones, moves us to appreciate the little things we experience on our journeys, whether simpler or finer. “C’est la douceur de vivre,” he says, the sweetness of living—that’s what you find on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

As we chat over pre-lunch espressos, the train crosses the border between France and Italy and makes a maintenance stop in the town of Ventimiglia. Travelers at the station, walking to their high-speed rides, stop to admire and photograph the VSOE. We’re part of the museum, I say to Deyrolle, and he agrees. This train becomes a part of you, just as much as you become a part of it. To be on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, he says, is to take part in a 24-hour play. Everyone fulfills a role, whether as staff or guest, knowingly or not. We’re all passengers, dressing the part, bringing to life what feels like a golden era of rail travel . After all, what is luxury travel if not a bit of immersive theatre?

Image may contain Cup Plate Couch Furniture Adult Person Bed Cushion Home Decor Glass Bread Food and Linen

On the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, pastries and coffee for breakfast are served in each guest’s private cabin.

Image may contain Food Food Presentation Cup Plate and Bread

Menus onboard are designed by Paris-based culinary star Jean Imbert, who was appointed the train’s chef in 2022.

But every play must end, and so does the curtain fall when we pull into the two-platform station in Santa Margherita Ligure, salt-washed and sun-kissed on the Ligurian coast . There’s a sting to leaving our beloved train, but what a salve Splendido is, adorned with hot-pink azaleas on every balcony, granting postcard views of Portofino Bay , glimmering and viridian, looking just as it did in the 1960s when the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner first checked into this seaside hideaway. The rooms have been updated since then though, and a floor-by-floor renovation led by designer Martin Brudnizki is ongoing, to be completed by the following summer season. The redesigned pool glimmers with new tile, color-matched to the sea, and the terrace restaurant is a perfect spot as ever, serving up trofie al pesto and spritzes on its unbeatable perch high on the hill.

And yet, throughout the weekend in Portofino, I find myself standing still once or twice to imagine the ground moving, gently rumbling, beneath my feet. I smile when I do. In my heart and dreams, at least, I remain on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. I have a feeling I won’t disembark for a very long time.

What to know before you go

The inaugural journey of Paris to Portofino: Two Legends Meet took place this year, on June 20 to 23. The trip for 2025 is in the works . For a similarly Franco-Italian affair, there are overnight journeys from Paris to either Rome, Florence, Venice, or Verona with availability for the rest of the year; the reversed itineraries are also offered, traveling from those Italian cities to the French capital. On August 23 , the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express departs from Paris and makes its way to Istanbul for its signature five-night journey, with overnight accommodations in Budapest and Bucharest. The same itinerary in reverse, Istanbul to Paris, departs on August 30 .

The service

On the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, there are three tiers of accommodations. The historic cabins ( from £3,530 / approx. $4,500 per person ) have daytime couchettes that become nighttime beds, and a personal washbasin; shared restrooms are located at the end of each sleeper carriage. The suites ( from £7,260 / approx. $9,255 per person ) offer more space, with sofas that become either a double bed or twin beds, a sitting area, and a small bathroom equipped with a toilet and a shower cubicle. The Grand Suites ( from £10,165 / approx. $12,959 per person ) are at the zenith of indulgence, offering everything the suites do, plus 24-hour butler service, free-flowing Champagne, the option for private in-cabin dining, and spacious marble en-suites bathrooms.

Best time to travel

Any time is the best time to travel on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Its journeys are scheduled from March to December annually. With various routes, origins, and termini tied to the seasons, you’d do well to pick not only a journey that works with your schedule, but also destinations that suit your tastes and interests. With stops at cultural capitals throughout Europe like Paris, Vienna, Prague, and Venice—and even Amsterdam and London—the options are plentiful. See the full schedule of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express here .

What to pack

For the one-night journeys on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, guests are permitted to keep in their cabins only one small suitcase and a bag per person. Think of it like a carry-on bag and a personal item when boarding a plane. Your larger items (big suitcases, trunks, ski gear, etc.) are checked into the luggage car and inaccessible during the trip, so be sure to keep all your essentials like medication, valuables, and travel documents with you. As far as the onboard dress code goes, “smart daywear” is the watchword . For dinner, black tie is not a requirement but certainly the norm.

What comes after

Depending on your destination, you can always extend the la douceur de vivre by checking into one of Belmond’s hotels, like the Hotel Cipriani in Venice, Villa San Michele in Florence, and of course Splendido in Portofino. Transfers are covered by the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

Prices start from £7,920 / approx. $10,100 per person based on two guests sharing a Historic Cabin on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and a Garden View Room at Splendido. The price includes an overnight journey on the train, two nights at the hotel and breakfast each day, a bespoke dinner by Chef Jean Imbert at La Terrazza, and transfers in Paris and Portofino. Teenager Accused of Derailing Train and Posting Crash Video Online

Investigators said a 17-year-old charged with intentionally causing a freight train derailment in Nebraska had recorded the crash, which he then posted on YouTube.

A BNSF train with an orange locomotive pulling cars of coal.

By Amanda Holpuch and Hank Sanders

A 17-year-old in Nebraska has been accused of intentionally derailing a train, recording the crash and then posting the footage online, according to court documents.

The teenager, who was described by investigators as a train enthusiast, or “railfan,” faces two felony counts of criminal mischief for intentionally damaging or tampering with property, according to documents filed last week in the district court of Lancaster County, Neb.

The BNSF Railway train was carrying coal and traveling east when it derailed around 6:10 p.m. on April 21 at a crossing in Bennet, Neb., which is about 17 miles southeast of Lincoln, according to a search warrant affidavit filed this month.

The derailment, which happened after the train drove through a misaligned switch at a railroad crossing, caused about $200,000 in damages to BNSF locomotives and property and at least $150,000 in damages to Omaha Public Power District property, the affidavit said.

The teenager approached an investigator at the crash scene and asked what had happened, according to the affidavit. The investigator said the cause of the derailment had not been identified, to which the teenager replied, “Obviously, a switch was flipped the wrong way.”

The investigator also asked the teenager about railroad switches and the teenager was able to describe how they work.

Forget Midjourney — Flux is the new king of AI image generation and here’s how to get access

Multiple ways to try Flux

Flux AI image

New AI products and services come in two ways; like a bolt of lightning with no warning, or after months of constant hype. Flux, by startup Black Forest Labs, was the former.

The AI image generation model is being dubbed the rightful heir to Stable Diffusion and it quickly went viral after its release with direct comparisons to market leader Midjourney .

The difference between Flux and Midjourney is that Flux is open-source and can run on a reasonably good laptop . This means it is, or will, also be available on many of the same multi-model platforms like Poe, Nightcafe and FreePik as Stable Diffusion .

I’ve been using it and my initial impressions are that in some areas it is better than Midjourney, especially around rendering people, but its skin textures aren’t as good as Midjourney v6.1 .

What is Flux and where did it come from?

Flux AI image

Flux came from AI startup Black Forest Labs. This new company was founded by some of the people responsible for most modern AI image generation technologies.

The German-based company is led by Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann and Dominik Lorenz, all former engineers at Stability AI, along with other leading figures in the development of diffusion-based AI models. This is the technology that also powers many AI video tools.

There are three versions of Flux.01 currently available, all text-to-image models. The first is a Pro version with a commercial license and is mainly used by companies like FreePik to offer its subscribers access to generative AI image technology.

Sign up to get the BEST of Tom's Guide direct to your inbox.

Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.

The next two are Dev and Schnell. These are the mid-weight and fast models and in my tests — running on a laptop with an RTX 4090 — they outperform Midjourney, DALL-E and even Ideogram in adherence to the prompt, image quality and text rendering on an image.

The company is also working on a text-to-video model that it promises will offer high-quality output and be available open-source. Branding it: “State-of-the-Art Text to Video for all.”

Where can I use Flux today?

We are excited to announce the launch of Black Forest Labs. Our mission is to develop and advance state-of-the-art generative deep learning models for media and to push the boundaries of creativity, efficiency and diversity. pic.twitter.com/ilcWvJgmsX August 1, 2024

If you have a well-equipped laptop you can download and run Flux.01 locally. There are some easy ways to do this including by using the Pinokio launcher. This makes it relatively trivial to install and run AI models with a couple of clicks and is free to use. It is a large file though.

However, if you’re machine isn’t up to the job there are several websites already offering access to Flux.01 and in some cases, this includes the largest commercial Pro model.

NightCafe , which is one of my favorite AI image platforms, already has access to the model and you could quickly compare that o images from other tools like Ideogram and Stable Diffusion 3.

Poe , the AI model platform, has access to Flux.01 and lets you generate the images in a chatbot-style format similar to creating pictures using tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E.

You can also get access through platforms more typically targeted at developers including Based Labs , Hugging Face and Fal.ai . FreePik, one of the largest AI image platforms on the market says it is also working to bring Flux to its site.

New timetable from Monday 26th August

08 August 2024

Extra services for Galway, Waterford, Wexford, Cobh and Midleton confirmed in new timetable, with extra Belfast services to follow. DART and Commuter times to change, Kishoge Station to open, Broombridge stop added to all Sligo line services.

More Intercity train services to/from Galway and Waterford – with later final departures to/from both cities; a move from a two-hourly to an hourly service on Dublin/Belfast and additional weekend trains on the Cork commuter network are the highlights of a new Iarnród Éireann rail timetable from 26th August, confirmed today.

The timetable was confirmed following public consultation in May / June, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority, in which 1,930 customers participated.

All improvements and changes will take effect from 26th August 2024 (except for hourly Belfast services, which will commence later in the year).

To accommodate hourly Dublin/Belfast services and improve punctuality performance, customers are also asked to note that departure times are proposed to change on many DART, Northern Commuter and Maynooth Commuter services.

Amongst stopping pattern changes, customers on the Sligo/Dublin Connolly route will benefit from interchange with the Luas Green line with the proposal to stop all services at Broombridge, as opposed to a limited number of services currently.

Additionally, Kishoge Station on the Heuston Commuter line will open on Monday 26th August.

Highlights of the proposed new timetables are:

Public consultation overview

A total of 1,930 submssions were made during public consultation on the new timetable in May/June 2024.

As advised during the consultation, suggested alterations which cannot be implemented at this timetable change will be retained in a database for consideration at future timetable reviews.

Below is a summary of the top 50 topics highlighted by customers during the consultation process.

Summary
  Topic Number % IÉ Response
1 Disagree with some PPT services terminating at Connolly 283 14.66% With the re-design of the timetable through Connolly, designed to enhance punctuality, the available slots for services to operate between Connolly and Grand Canal Dock in both directions has changed.
With Heuston services relatively unchanged for most of the day, the times of operation for Phoenix Park Tunnel services are effectively locked in between Newbridge/Hazelhatch and Drumcondra.
As a result of all of this, there are a number of occasions throughout peak periods where a Phoenix Park Tunnel Commuter service is due at Connolly around the same time as a Northern or Maynooth Commuter service.
In determining which service is to operate across to Grand Canal Dock and return, the latest passenger demand figures were used, which on many occasions sees a large multiple of customers travelling on the Maynooth or Northern Commuter service compared to the Phoenix Park Tunnel. It is also the case that there would not be adequate capacity on PPT services to accommodate customers transferring from Maynooth or Northern Commuter services.
2 Increase service level to Clongriffin 95 4.92% ADDRESSED: The existing morning and evening peak services will continue to serve Clongriffin as before. Their omission from the draft timetable was a compilation error.
In addition on Mondays to Fridays all Northern Commuter services after 20.00 from Dublin will additionally serve Howth Jctn, Clongriffin and Portmarnock. All Northern Commuter services in both directions on Saturdays and Sundays will now additionally serve Howth Jctn, Clongriffin and Portmarnock.
Unfortunately it is not currently possible to add any additional services in the peak periods Monday to Friday due to capacity constraints on existing Commuter services or no more available fleet on DART.

What Tim Walz has shared about his family’s 7-year IVF journey

Vice President Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate Tuesday morning — and he spoke at a Pennsylvania rally just hours later. One of the very personal topics he discussed was his family's experience with in vitro fertilization (IVF).

"When my wife and I decided to have children, we spent years going through infertility treatments," he said in a video of the rally shared by AP . "And I remember praying every night for a call for good news."

He went on to describe "the pit in my stomach" and "the agony" when the treatments didn't work. "So it wasn't by chance that when we welcomed our daughter into the world, we named her Hope," he said, looking thoughtful as the crowd burst into cheers.

"So it wasn't by chance that when we welcomed our daughter into the world, we named her Hope."

Walz and his wife, Gwen Walz , endured a seven-year struggle with infertility, according to his interview with the Star Tribune in March. Today, as a result of reproductive medicine, they have two children : their daughter Hope, born in 2001, and son Gus, born in 2006.

Although Walz described his very personal experience with IVF and reproductive medicine, he noted that infertility affects almost everyone in some way.

In March, he posted on Facebook: "Gwen and I have two beautiful children because of reproductive health care like IVF. This issue is deeply personal to our family and so many others."

The post was in response to a Alabama Supreme Court ruling that said embryos created by IVF are considered children, stoking fear about legal repercussions for unused embryos in the state.

He continued this train of thought when he wrote on X recently, "Even if you’ve never gone through the hell of infertility, someone you know has. When Gwen and I were having trouble getting pregnant, the anxiety and frustration blotted out the sun."

At yesterday's rally, he also cautioned people from judging others.

"In Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and their personal choices that they make, even if we wouldn't make the same choice ourselves," he said at yesterday's rally. "There's a golden rule: mind your own d--- business. That includes IVF."
