BoBoiBoy: The Movie
Spoilers for the original series are unmarked. you have been warned .
BoBoiBoy : The Movie is the first film in the BoBoiBoy series, occurring sometime after the original series finale .
BoBoiBoy has developed a superb reputation as Rintis Island's hero, but his habit of saving people puts strain on his friendships. His Robot Buddy , Ochobot, the Power Sphera who granted his superpowers, is especially disheartened when he forgets the camping trip that his friends had planned (for the 10th time already), so BoBoiBoy aims to make up for it. Unfortunately, Bora Ra and his gang of Power Sphera hunters, known as the Tengkotak, arrive and steal Ochobot in order to locate the very first Power Sphera, Klamkabot, who contacted Ochobot prior to then. The team's one clue to finding him is to locate a floating island, and with Klamkabot's help, BoBoiBoy and his friends make a daring rescue.
BoBoiBoy: Sfera Kuasa is a 2016 comic that uses the movie's footage as panels. It contains concept art as well as an exclusive hand-drawn prologue.
BoBoiBoy : The Movie provides examples of:
- BoBoiBoy survives the strike of Bora Ra's hammer and punches him away before using Blaze and Ice (the 2nd tier of Fire and Water) for the first time. When Bora Ra sets an Unrealistic Black Hole that threatens to swallow everyone from above, the hero splits into 7 and unlocks two new elementals, Thorn and Solar. Thorn uses spiky vines to secure Bora Ra before Solar deals the finishing blow with an Eye Beam right through him and the black hole.
- Gopal becomes able to transform himself into other materials, as he realises that he survived Gaga Naz's attack by turning into gold. He bounces around while made of rubber before turning his head into diamond for a rather effective head-butt .
- Yaya's gravity powers become strong enough to lift Gaga Naz and forcefully drop him on the ground in a "Maximum Gravity Crush", which is combined with Ying's newfound ability to reverse time, sending Gaga Naz flying and falling until some of his teeth get knocked out.
- Fang gains the ability to fuse with his shadow animals, wearing them like enhanced suits. He flies to Bora Ra with a "Shadow Garuda Fusion" and leaps across floating rocks as a "Shadow Bear Fusion" to attack him.
- Acoustic License : Subverted for laughs where Cici Ko (from a flying spaceship) reveals to the heroes (on the ground) that he was The Mole of the Tengkotak gang who was sabotaging the villains all the while to help the heroes , but no one can hear him. They do wave back when he waves at them though. Fang: Shouldn't we tell him we can't hear him? Papa Zola: No need! It's funnier this way!
- ...And That Little Girl Was Me : Klamkabot tells BoBoiBoy and his friends about a powerful Power Sphera who is hunted down by the main villains. Gopal can guess from the first sentence that Klamkabot is talking about himself and nobody pretends otherwise.
- Ascended Fanboy : Adu Du and Probe are big fans of the Tengkotak gang and are thrilled to be part of their crew after they help them capture Ochobot. However, their admiration ends when they laugh at Adu Du and Probe's friendship, and the former realises that they're too cruel, even for him .
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking : The robbers are halted by attacks from 3 of BoBoiBoy 's elemental forms, and one old lady. " Lightning Slash! " " Cyclone Whirl! " " Earth Golem! " " Ear Twist! "
- Bad Boss : Bora Ra is perfectly willing to abuse his own gang members if they don't deliver satisfactory results. He leaves the airlock open until Yoyo Oo gives him Klamkabot's exact location, and not even Gaga Naz is exempted from being yelled at for "losing to kids".
- Bequeathed Power : Both subverted and played straight. The titular hero's Robot Buddy Ochobot gives him and his friends the last of his energy after being fatally damaged by Bora Ra. This gives them all power upgrades to defeat the villains once and for all. After the battle, Ochobot turns out to be alive because Klamkabot transferred the last of his energy to him after he was convinced that Ochobot would be safe with BoBoiBoy from witnessing the strength of their friendship .
- Big "NO!" : In the beginning of the movie, Bora Ra yells "NOOO!" when Klamkabot escapes from him yet again.
- Bilingual Bonus : The alien cephalopod that the Tengkotak give Adu Du and Probe to feed is called "Kurita", which means "octopus".
- Bilingual Dialogue : In the factory chase scene, Ying and Fang share a brief exchange in Chinese, while the main language of the film is Malay. Ying: 喂 Fang, 为什么你不要 "helang bayang?" Translation Hey Fang, why didn't you summon Shadow Eagle? Fang: 我紧张吗! Translation I panicked okay!
- In his admiration for the Tengkotak gang, hearts float around Adu Du as he looks upon their signal on his radar, as it indicates that they are coming to Earth and he can meet his idols.
- Adu Du sees Kiki Ta for the first time in a heart-adorned Crush Filter , followed by an Imagine Spot where hearts come off both of them as they run across a beach. He then falls on the floor with hearts in his eyes.
- Mr. Mat, who saw the floating island pop out of the water, is met with skepticism when he tells the customers at Tok Aba's Cocoa Shop about it. Papa Zola in particular is the first to outcry it as a bunch of baloney, only to eat his words the next day when BoBoiBoy and his friends ask for his help to find it ( but he claims that he believed it the whole time ).
- BoBoiBoy catches a glimpse of Klamkabot's transmission to Ochobot, and the latter about to be taken away until BoBoiBoy interrupts the process. Ochobot was unaware of the message and thinks BoBoiBoy is talking nonsense about the robot going to leave with his grandfather (since he doesn't have one). Tok Aba figures that BoBoiBoy was just dreaming.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome : Ochobot prevents BoBoiBoy from seeing the broadcast of the police chasing some robbers because he knows he'll want to help them (and forget their camping trip yet again). This ends up happening anyway as the high-speed chase passes by them, and he runs off to help catch the crooks. BoBoiBoy may be well-praised by the city for his heroism judging by his wall of achievements , but his friends are dissatisfied that he keeps forgetting their plans because of his habit to save people.
- Comical Nap Drool : The night after he stops the Hot Pursuit and thinks of how to make it up to his friends for forgetting their camping trip, BoBoiBoy lies sprawled on his bed, a puddle of drool at the corner of his mouth as his snoring blows a bubble from his nose .
- Copycat Mockery : To demonstrate to BoBoiBoy how glum he's being, Papa Zola puts the boy's hat on his head and jokingly whines with exaggerated expressions, "Ooh, I have so many problems!" sticking in his catchphrase of "Awesome!" with the accompanying thumbs-up.
- Crush Filter : When Adu Du first sees Kiki Ta, his mug lands on the floor in slow-motion, and so does Kiki Ta turning her head, with a pink, heart-adorned filter appearing around her.
- Dead Hat Shot : Subverted twice with the hero's orange cap. Gaga Naz blasts the heroes off a platform and assumes they're dead when he sees BoBoiBoy's hat hanging off the debris. After he leaves, the cap flies off before being caught by its owner, who was hiding safely underneath the structure with the others. Then in the final battle, after Bora Ra strikes his giant hammer down on BoBoiBoy , his hat flies off and it seems that the villain has won. However, Ochobot had granted the heroes Eleventh Hour Superpowers , and a hatless BoBoiBoy scowls as he pushes back before sending a flying punch.
- Destroy the Villain's Weapon : Played with. Bora Ra delivers his most devastating attacks with a large black-hole-powered hammer, with which he absorbs BoBoiBoy into, seemingly sealing his fate. However, BoBoiBoy breaks out by splitting into 5 , destroying the hammer in the process.
- Ear Ache : After the 3 Robs wreck an old woman's groceries by almost running her over, she gets her revenge after BoBoiBoy defeats them by twisting Roberto Santanaz's ear.
- Even Evil Has Standards : The Card Carrying Villains Adu Du and Probe are not fond of their friendship being mocked. The Tengkotak gang were their idols until they laugh at the idea of befriending a robot, so much so that Adu Du calls Bora Ra, their leader, cruel.
- Eye Cam : BoBoiBoy is first shown getting out of bed from his perspective, as he wakes up to the sound of his alarm clock on his bedside table, turning his head to it before shutting it off.
- Face Palm : Bora Ra rolls his eyes and puts his palm to his head in disbelief when Adu Du goes goo-goo eyes for Kiki Ta.
- Fastball Special : When the giant Kurita flies towards their floating boat, Papa Zola instructs Gopal to close his eyes before lifting him up. The boy is terrified to find himself thrown towards the monster, but that's the point to activate Gopal's powers to the max and turn Kurita into calamari .
- Faux Affably Evil : Bora Ra briefly feigns kindness by asking to borrow Ochobot before he cuts to the chase by "forcefully borrowing him" and yanking him out of BoBoiBoy's hands.
- Floating Continent : The second half of the movie takes place on The Floating Island, which Klamkabot teleports to Earth along with himself to escape the Tengkotak. Its land pieces appear to be connected by vines, save for smaller pieces of rock. They carry alien wildlife (although besides constricting vines and red eyes glowing in the dark, nothing more is seen), and an abandoned Power Sphera factory is located further within. The prologue of the comic for the film explains that it was constructed by Kubulus aliens to make Power Spheras on, but when they got greedy and turned some of them into destroyer robots, Klamkabot dispersed the other Power Spheras via teleportation, and has been on the run ever since.
- Galactic Conqueror : Klamkabot tells the heroes that the Tengkotak gang have a planetary invasion campaign occurring in the far reaches of the galaxy with a hologram of several ships blasting at a defenseless planet. If they get the teleportation power, their conquest would be even faster.
- Giant Squid : When Kurita falls into the ocean, the contact with water enlarges the space octopus into a giant mechanical monster that tries to kill everyone, even by flying out of the water , but Gopal takes it down by turning the giant Kurita into calamari.
- Going for the Big Scoop : Ravi J. Jambul gets a live report on a high-speed chase by jumping onto the roof of the robbers' vehicle and interviewing them. As his catchphrase for the introduction of his program goes, "Wherever there's trouble, I'm surely there!"
- Heel–Face Turn : J-Rex, the Land Shark who was dispatched by the Tengkotak to hunt the heroes, joins the side of good after Papa Zola saves his life .
- Height Insult : Adu Du and Probe are thrown out of the Tengkotak spaceship and into the ocean with a baby squid called Kurita. After struggling to swim, they're raised above the water by Kurita growing multifold in size from contact with water . Adu Du notes that they're getting higher, which Probe remarks to be weird as well because Adu Du is usually short, earning a scowl from the latter.
- Heroic Second Wind : It seems that the cast is about to be defeated, as Bora Ra aims his giant hammer at BoBoiBoy while he mourns for Ochobot and his other allies also face impending peril. Then Ochobot grants the heroes some last-minute power upgrades to fight back against the Tengkotak.
- Hoist by His Own Petard : After BoBoiBoy defeats him, Bora Ra gets sucked into his own black hole that he activated to doom the island .
- Homing Lasers : Gaga Naz's back blasters can launch lasers that hone towards his targets.
- Hope Crusher : Bora Ra interrupts Ochobot's last words of "I hope..." to BoBoiBoy by yanking Ochobot out of his hands and declaring that he'll destroy that hope. He then kills Ochobot.
- Hope Spot : BoBoiBoy demands that he see his badly battered robotic friend, to which Bora Ra lets, allowing the boy to run past him towards Ochobot. Then Bora Ra smirks and teleports to whack BoBoiBoy from the left and right with his giant hammer.
- Hot Pursuit : BoBoiBoy aids the police after noticing their high-speed chase of the 3 Robs, (known here as "The Serial Laundromat Robbers"). When they catch them, the truck is found to contain 15 bags of laundry, 3 clothing irons and a flowery bedsheet.
- Imagine Spot : Adu Du briefly fantasises about lovingly chasing Kiki Ta across a beach when he first lays eyes on her, with hearts emitting from the two of them in the scenario.
- Insane Troll Logic : When Gopal tells Papa Zola that his father says that people only fish for squid at night, he asks him if his father sleeps at night. He replies yes, and Papa Zola suddenly shouts that surely the squids need to sleep at night too.
- "Just Joking" Justification : To prevent his friends from thinking he forgot about their camping trip again, BoBoiBoy claims that he was just messing with them when he wrongly answers on what day it is. Needless to say, they're skeptical, and that's even before BoBoiBoy shows up too late anyway (although it was because he was stopping criminals from escaping the police).
- Land Shark : J-Rex appears as a mechanical hybrid of a T. rex and a shark note (its name is a portmanteau of "jerung" (the Malay word for shark) and "T. rex") , with a shark's body and a T. rex's limbs. The Tengkotak gang dispatch it from their spaceship to dispose of the heroes who followed them to the floating island .
- Left the Background Music On : A variant. Gopal leaves a message in marker on BoBoiBoy's bathroom mirror, which appears to be read out in Gopal's voice as BoBoiBoy reads it. When he asks to himself aloud if this is necessary, Gopal replies, leading BoBoiBoy to find Gopal at his bathroom window.
- Kurita is a mechanical octopus made by Yoyo Oo. At first, it appears harmless, but when it turns into a Giant Squid , it's far more metallic-looking, with turning gears at its sides and a circular shredder-like maw surrounded by 8 yellow pieces to form the beak. Also, it can fly .
- J-Rex is a shark with robotic T. rex-like limbs attached to it, effectively making it a menacing Land Shark .
- Mourning a Dead Robot : Bora Ra kills Ochobot and mocks the hero for crying over him. Bora Ra laughs at the idea of befriending robots, let alone Power Spheres like Ochobot, who he hunts for their powers and collects as trophies, but the hero's love for his robotic friend (and the eleventh hour superpowers Ochobot grants the heroes) gives him the strength to beat Bora Ra. However, BoBoiBoy doesn't celebrate their victory immediately, still begging Ochobot to wake up . When Ochobot turns out to be alive, the heroes cry Tears of Joy instead.
- Mundane Made Awesome : An elderly woman twisting the ear of a criminal who ran over her vegetables , made awesome by it being a called attack and the last to follow three of the hero's elemental attacks.
- Never Bareheaded : BoBoiBoy , as per usual, even when he goes to the bathroom, as he wears a shower cap that's similarly colored to his signature hat. This serves as the basis of two subverted Dead Hat Shots , and a major turning point in the final battle, where he scowls at Bora Ra after his hat is knocked off (the first time that his hair is ever seen, which reveals his frontal skunk stripe) before harnessing his 11th-Hour Superpower .
- Orbital Shot : Papa Zola gives BoBoiBoy a pep talk of how he has to grow up and become BoBoiMan , in the middle of which he picks BoBoiBoy up by the shoulders and shakes him to hammer in the message, and the camera revolves around the two of them.
- Pass the Popcorn : The morning that BoBoiBoy invites his friends to go squid-fishing with Papa Zola, they're initially still angry at him for forgetting the camping trip the previous day, and the customer at Tok Aba's store says "Whoa! Morning drama!" and sips his drink in excitement.
- Puff of Logic : Adu Du and Probe are thrown out of the Tengkotak spaceship and into the ocean. Probe comments on how well Adu Du is swimming, but Adu Du remembers that he can't swim, and proceeds to thrash and sink. Probe dives to save him, and Adu Du is grateful that Probe can swim. Wouldn't you know it, Probe suddenly can't swim either, and they both thrash in the water.
- Reverse Telescopic Vision : When Papa Zola claims to see a familiar face at the end of his handheld telescope, BoBoiBoy asks to see, and Papa Zola shoves it into his face. BoBoiBoy sighs that the telescope is backwards, before he turns it himself and sees Adu Du and Probe.
- Running Gag : Papa Zola and his insistence of taking selfies from the boat ride onwards. He even takes photos during chase scenes and while being tied up by the bad guys. He lastly takes a wefie with everyone at the end.
- Save the Villain : Papa Zola saves J-Rex; who has been chasing him, Adu Du, and Probe, from falling off a cliff, even though they are also hanging on that cliff. After that, J-Rex becomes Papa Zola's pet . Papa Zola: Justice never lets anyone fall!
- Scared of What's Behind You : Before the heroes find out why Adu Du and Probe are swimming away, they demand them to tell where Ochobot is. Before Adu Du can warn them, he yelps in fear, and Papa Zola presumes that he intimidated him, but the others can see the Giant Squid rising from behind him.
- Teleportation : Klamkabot's special power is the ability to teleport himself and others, and the film starts with him teleporting a whole floating island to Earth to get away from the Tengkotak gang. He bequeathes this power to Ochobot to keep it safe from the hands of evil, initially telling him that he should stick to his strategy of being on the run forever, but seeing the lengths BoBoiBoy goes to protect his friends convinces Klamkabot that his power would be safe with them .
- Tendrils of Darkness : Fang stealthily grows tendrils of shadow from behind him while Bora Ra is busy talking in order to connect everyone for Ochobot to teleport them all out of harm's way. Unfortunately, Kiki Ta foils this by shooting Ochobot just before he can activate his power.
- This Cannot Be! : Fang and Bora Ra react in disbelief at the sight of BoBoiBoy's Penta Split, as this is the first time he's split into that many people before. Fang: Impossible. Bora Ra: Not... not possible!
- T. Rexpy : J-Rex is a portmanteau of "jerung" (the Malay word for shark) and "T-Rex." This Mechanical Animal appears to be a shark with T-Rex-like metal limbs like a T-Rex with a shark's head .
- Trophy Room : To showcase how far BoBoiBoy 's come as Rintis Island's superhero, he has a wall of newspaper clippings about his rescues and heroic endeavours in his room.
- Two Lines, No Waiting : BoBoiBoy and his friends split from the others to save Ochobot when his watch detects his signal, because Papa Zola wouldn't wake up and Adu Du and Probe are tied up. This makes two simultaneous threads, one with the heroes reuniting with Ochobot and the other concerning Papa Zola, Adu Du and Probe looking for the heroes. Action sequences of both are switched with each other at times, with the heroes being pursued by Bora Ra and Gaga Naz while the others are chased by the Tengkotak's J-Rex . They later become hostages that Bora Ra threatens to hurt should BoBoiBoy not meet his demands.
- Unrealistic Black Hole : Black holes are Bora Ra's superpower, yet they often appear as dark purple spheres that act like vortexes instead, causing objects to get sucked towards it or stuck orbiting around it. He can strengthen this ability by combining it with his giant hammer to trap BoBoiBoy in a black hole. That is until he breaks free, destroying his weapon in the process .
- Use Your Head : After Gopal gains the ability to transform his body into other materials, he bounces around like rubber before turning his head into diamond when he's headed for Gaga Naz's back, serving a solid head-butt from behind.
- Verbal Backspace : Yaya and Ying call BoBoiBoy and ask him if he knows what day it is today. He replies "International Canteen Day?" much to their anger, and he merely repeats what the girls say when they do tell him the answer. BoBoiBoy claims that he hasn't forgot, he was just goofing around. Yaya: Do you remember what day it is today? BoBoiBoy : Uh, of course. International Canteen Day, right? Ying: What "International Canteen Day"?! Yaya and Ying: Today is our camping trip! BoBoiBoy : Yes, yes I remember! Our camping trip!
- Villainous Breakdown : While Bora Ra is already livid ever since Klamkabot escaping to Earth, he completely loses it after BoBoiBoy defeated him using his upgrade powers and he final solution is to unleash a powerful black hole to kill everyone.
- Walk on Water : Ying uses her Super-Speed on the water to propel the group's boat. At first it's to catch up with Adu Du and Probe who are swimming away, then it's to get away from a Giant Squid .
- Water-Triggered Change : Bora Ra gives Adu Du and Probe a task; to feed the alien octopus Kurita, and not let it get wet. Probe questions how they'd get it wet - but is interrupted when they are ejected from the spaceship and into the ocean. Kurita turns into a Giant Squid as a result.
- When Elders Attack : In a high-speed chase , the robbers run over an old lady's groceries. Then she rides her scooter towards the robbers while angrily wielding a rolling pin, sped along by BoBoiBoy Cyclone on his hoverboard from behind. The elementals stop the robbers with their powers while the old lady gets the last attack of twisting their boss' ear .
Tropes specific to the comic adaptation BoBoiBoy: Sfera Kuasa :
- He Who Fights Monsters : The Kubulus aliens made Power Spheras to win against relentless hostiles that were invading their home planet of Ata Ta Tiga. After enough time went by for their society to be rebuilt better than before, the Kubulus became power-hungry and reprogrammed some Power Spheras to destroy, in order to conquer other planets and form an empire.
