Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Season 1 of The Case Study of Vanitas anime and up to Chapter 23 of the  manga.

The Case Study of Vanitas  will be returning in January 2022, with Noé Archiviste and Vanitas on the trail of the Beast of Gevaudan. Eight volumes of the manga have been released so far, so it's the perfect time to get reading if you want to spoil yourself a little on what's coming up.  The Case Study of Vanitas has followed the manga closely thus far. There have only been a few small changes during Season 1 that likely won't affect the plot going forward; however, some details about Vanitas' past were omitted entirely, as well as some pretty significant facts about Jeanne. The manner in which the relationship between Noé and Vanitas was approached also set the two on a different level of relationship than currently features in the manga.

Vanitas' past is the big mystery of Season 1, and it's still not entirely clear. While infiltrating Doctor Moreau's lab, it is revealed that Vanitas was a child test subject there who was rescued by the Vampire of the Blue Moon along with another child. In the manga, Vanitas has a flashback of vowing to steal her power and kill all vampires , yet also has a flashback to being taught about the 'prédateur' by the Vampire of the Blue Moon, which saves their lives. While the anime shows Vanitas being rescued, it fails to show that Vanitas learned from the Vampire of the Blue Moon.

the case study of Vanitas

Leaving out these flashbacks changes Vanitas' past in an important way since, oddly enough, it makes him more similar to Noé, both rescued out of terrible situations by a very powerful teacher . Although Vanitas claimed that rescuing the vampires was his revenge on the Vampire of the Blue Moon, it would seem that she was his caretaker for a while, and now he vows to save the vampires instead of killing them all, making his history with the Vampire of the Blue Moon in the manga much more complex than in the anime. He also continues to have flashbacks regarding the other child who was rescued, who goads him about promises.

Jeanne is another character whose entire story is not laid out. The anime does reveal Jeanne going to Dominique de Sade for aid in getting Vanitas to dislike her, but it doesn't show how Jeanne has grown close to Dominique as a whole, and Dominique even once refers to Jeanne as 'hers.' Dominique reveals why Jeanne has such trouble in pushing Vanitas away -- borreaus are vampires whose ancestors committed great crimes, so they are punished by being the ones who must kill their own kind. It is a borreau who always kills a curse-bearer. Because of this, borreaus are hated by the rest of vampire society , so Jeanne has difficulty breaking away from anyone even remotely kind to her.

She is also almost certainly a curse-bearer who has been forbidden to speak of it, and while it's fairly obvious even in the anime, the manga confirms that it's Lord Ruthven who did so, adding to the growing list of why Ruthven is the greatest threat to Vanitas' goal. Jeanne does allow herself to lean on Vanitas more in the manga, who promises multiple times to kill her if she is a threat to her master, again comparing Vanitas to Noé, who could not kill Louis de Sade years ago.

The Case Study of Vanitas

However, perhaps the biggest change is how the anime emphasizes Noé and Vanitas' relationship. While some anime create opening and ending sequences that show the entire cast, the opening for  The Case Study of Vanitas is a portrayal of the two happily exploring Paris in a way that never actually happens. The ending sequence is even more blatant. The song used in the sequence, "0 (zero)" by artist LMYK, is a love song and tells of a much deeper relationship than the two characters have as of the end of Season 1.

The result is that, while already the most important relationship in the show, the bond between the two is stressed even more through the opening and ending sequences. Whether this will have a purpose in later seasons or is simply to increase the drama behind knowing that Vanitas is now dead by Noé's hand can't yet be determined. Still, it does work to efficiently inform the audience of where their attention ought to be.

While the final episodes of Season 1 switched up the order in which events were presented and pushed back a character reveal, there's no doubt the hunt for the Beast of Gevaudan is on for everyone. With new characters to meet and secrets to uncover, Season 2 of  The Case Study of Vanitas is being impatiently awaited upon so the good doctor can get to work.

The Case Study of Vanitas can be streamed on Funimation .

Centuries prior to the French Revolution, the " World Formula " theory was proposed by Paracelsus which posited that the world was governed by mathematical formulas whose variables could be identified and altered. He aspired to change these variables in an attempt to erase suffering and bring happiness to humanity, which resulted in the event known as " Babel ." Innumerable calamities rocked the world to its core, causing massive amounts of death, and once it subsided new entities came into being in the world, primely the Vampire species . Deemed abominations before God, normal humans attempted to wipe out these new beings, and a race war ensued. This attempted genocide failed and Vampires began to hide their existences which came to be believed as no more than myth and legend, despite dwelling only one step beyond the human world.

Noé Archiviste , a young vampire living in late 19th century France, is sent by his Teacher to Paris to find the Book of Vanitas and discover its true nature. Supposedly, the Book of Vanitas is a cursed grimoire created by the Vampire of the Blue Moon from which the incurable disease Malnomen originates. Noé successfully discovers the Book on his way to Paris, as well as the person possessing it—a human calling himself Vanitas who uses the grimoire to cure Malnomen. Vanitas declares his goal to be the salvation of the entire race of Vampires, and Noé accompanies him for his entire journey, wishing to understand the true nature of not only the Book but also the enigmatic owner who wields it.

The story consists of Noé's memoirs on how he would come to eventually kill Vanitas with his own hands.

Terminology [ ]

Vampires [ ].

Though referred to as "vampires," the Vampire race within The Case Study of Vanitas are distinct from mythical vampires, and were in fact named after them for having certain similarities. The main distinguishing feature between Vampires and humans is the ability of Vampires to see and interact with the World Formula , allowing them certain superhuman abilities. Unlike mythical vampires, Vampires within The Case Study of Vanitas do not have to drink blood or harm others to survive, and the vast majority go their entire lives without harming humans. While most (but not all) Vampires do enjoy the taste of blood, it is not a biological need, and is compared to alcohol, smoking, or sex. Compulsive blood drinking only occurs in the case of blood addiction or Malnomen .

Most Vampires are born under the Crimson Moon, and have a natural fear of the Blue Moon. Those who are born under the Blue Moon, as in the case of Vanitas of the Blue Moon , are scorned and ostracized by other Vampirekind.

The Book of Vanitas [ ]

A cursed grimoire supposedly passed on to Vanitas by Vanitas of the Blue Moon themself. It is the originator of the disease Malnomen, created in revenge against Vampires for their prosecution of those born under the Blue Moon. The human Vanitas now has the Book of Vanitas within his possession and is the only person capable of using it. However, contrary to the Book's original purpose, Vanitas uses it to cure cases of Malnomen and desires to save the Vampire race.

Malnomen [ ]

A disease created by Vanitas of the Blue Moon . It attacks the True Name of vampires, causing their bodies and souls to warp. Those infected with Malnomen, usually called curse bearers, gradually grow insane and begin to obsessively search for blood, escalating until they assault and even kill others without hesitation. In addition, their bodies will corrupt, though the onset of physical symptoms appear to happen rapidly in the final stages of the disease. Once warping of the body occurs, the curse bearer will continue to attack others until it dies. Until very recently, there was no possible way to cure those infected with Malnomen, and thus all curse bearers would be sentenced to execution by decapitation once their condition was discovered. The human Vanitas reverse engineers the different forms of Malnomen to find and restore the curse bearer's True Name, curing them.

The Case Study of Vanitas is written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki and began serialization in Square Enix's monthly shōnen magazine Monthly Gangan Joker on December 2015. There are currently eleven tankōbon volumes collecting serial chapters released in Japanese. The series is licensed in English by Yen Press and published simultaneously with its Japanese release.

The Case Study of Vanitas is an anime television series adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. On March 28, 2021, Aniplex announced at AnimeJapan an anime adaptation for the manga, animated by the studio BONES. It started broadcasting on July 2, 2021.

Stage Play [ ]

Stage "Vanitas no Carte" is a stage play adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. Announced by the official Twitter account on October 28, 2021. The show was initially scheduled from January 21st to January 30th, 2022 at the THEATRE1010 (シアター1010), in Tokyo, Japan. An encore was performed from March 10th to March 12th, 2023 at the Sunshine Theater (サンシャイン劇場), in Tokyo, Japan.

Main characters of The Case Study of Vanitas first revealed in Pandora Hearts「There is.」

  • "Vanitas" is an artistic term referring to a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death. It derives from the Latin word "vānitās" which can translate to "emptiness," "nothingness," "falsity," or "vanity" in English. [1]
  • The furigana for 手記 ( shuki , meaning "note" or "memo") is "カルテ" ( karute ), which translates to a patient's card or chart in a hospital on which is recorded any illnesses, treatments, and general medical history.
  • Vanitas first appears in the final Pandora Hearts artbook 「There is.」 , shown waving to the main cast of Pandora Hearts as he passes by alongside Noé who had his back turned so that he remained unidentifiable at the time.

Oh where to begin. My simple review is: It was made for people who haven't read the manga. The story was lacking. In the best way, it was too soft. Vanitas' issues were downplayed. Especially during the ball and he was reduced to "Silly looking Vani wants to play doctor." It's supposed to be bread crumbs. A slow fall. Important things were dropped. Things in the catacombs were dropped. Foreshadowing is a key player here. Animation was good. It kept the pretty boy style and didn't rob Jeanne of her shape. I really have nothing to say about sound. Characters, characters, characters. Yes I love the characters but not as much here. Vanitas went from angry at him self to sad boi. Domi had more to her character. Her obsession with Jeanne was not simply to dance and make Noe upset. Olivier... I won't start on him. Characters had corners chisseled off. They were ironed out. They were watered down. It's disappointing. What saves this and gives it a better review? Animation and sound. But a note to everyone getting upset about the ending being given away in the beginning: It's a history. That's why episodes and chapters are called memiors. Adding on as RIPAnime suggests: I find the characters watered down because there wasn't enough time to explain the issues they have. Parts that could help were skipped. Vanitas has issues with his past and he has those issues today. Dominique isn't upset simply because of Noe not returning her feelings. She likes and cares for Jeanne genuinely, but the affection isn't there enough. Character development does happen later, but it seems like it will be harder without these starting pieces. While we don't get to the bottom of their past at the beginning, we haven't gotten far from the surface when we should be digging a hole.

this shit is fucking amazing. good job bones for doing the manga justice.

Vampires in Paris, The City of Flowers, beware, something evil lurks, hunting for your true name. Child or elder, it matters not. Parade of Charlatan will twist you, make you a monster. You're own family will be your feast.   Your only salvation is the infamous clockwork grimoire, The Book of Vanitas or death. Noé Archiviste searches for the book, only to have it come to him via a charismatic, unhinged young man calling himself Vanitas, a vampire doctor. Whitty, bloody, and sexy (but not ecchi); it's quite the fun ride. As the series progresses we learn more about the characters' dark, blood splattered pasts all with beautiful art and comedy mixed in.  If you like this series, I recommend reading the manga of the same title to get deeper into these characters. The anime is nearly all canon, but there are a few things that are glossed over.   I rate it 16+. A child is beheaded right in front of their friend. Lots of blood and thoughts of suicide.

Vanitas and Noé Archiviste head out to the town of Gévaudan in search of the "Beast," an enormous wolf-like creature that has slaughtered hundreds of people. Suspecting that the Beast is a curse-bearing vampire, Vanitas primarily aims to heal it using the powers of his grimoire.

Along the way, the two get separated and suddenly travel back to the past—to the exact moment the Beast is lurking in the woods. After a battle against the gigantic wolf and a vampire hunter, Vanitas decides to team up with Jeanne in order to find Noé. Despite being allies, Jeanne's goal is the opposite of Vanitas', as she was tasked to kill the Beast—suspecting it may be someone she used to know.

Meanwhile, a severely wounded Noé is picked up by the mysterious Chloé d'Apchier and her servant. Like Noé, Chloé is a vampire whose existence was erased from the public's knowledge. She has been a guardian for future generations and once tried to find a way to become human again. While Noé is grateful to Chloé for her hospitality, little does he know that she might be siding with forces far more dangerous than the Beast itself.

The Case Study of Vanitas Manga Volume 1

There once lived a vampire known as Vanitas, hated by his own kind for being born under a full blue moon, as most arise on the night of a crimson one. Afraid and alone, he created the “Book of Vanitas,” a cursed grimoire that would one day take his vengeance on all vampires; this is how the story goes, at least.

Vanitas no Karte follows Noé Archiviste, a young man who is traveling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé’s surprise, an entirely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. But behind his kind demeanor lies something a bit more sinister…

How Did the Previous Episodes' Conflict Get Resolved?

The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2 Ending Explained

Just as the battle with Mikhail seemed hopeless, or at least impossible to end without serious and irreversible injury, an unexpected revelation came in. Noe's teacher, in the form of a young man, appears and admits he was the one who saved Mikhail. The Teacher now goes by the name of Count of St Germain - an actual historical figure.

St Germain's intentions seem less than pure, but at least he helps diffuse the situation for the moment, by taking Mikhail away. The next day, Mikhail seeks out Vanitas again. While Mikhail's plan was very twisted, his motivations were childlike and informed by his early trauma.

In fact, Mikhail was afraid that he was to blame for the fact that Vanitas killed Luna, the vampire who raised them. Vanitas is able to reassure Mikhail that this isn't the case, but he still refuses to join his former foster brother, stating that he would rather die because of Noe - likely a cruel foreshadowing, given that Noe kills Vanitas in the end - or so he says.

Vanitas and Noe have now reached a renewed understanding. Noe has still not drunk Vanitas' blood, so he does not know everything about his past but the two are still closer than before - and know that they will have more enemies to deal with in the future.

Vanitas will keep curing vampires - which we know that he's doing partly to find out what corrupted the true name of his vampire foster parent. Along the way, they are likely to come across more enemies and malnomen, while Teacher might have a sinister role to play.
