غربت پر مضمون

ہم غربت (Poverty) کو ایک ایسی حالت کہتے ہیں جہاں ایک خاندان کی بنیادی ضروریات جیسے خوراک، رہائش، لباس اور تعلیم پوری نہ ہوں۔ ایک غریب شخص پیسے کی کمی کی وجہ سے تعلیم حاصل نہیں کر پاتا اور اس وجہ سے وہ بے روزگار رہتا ہے۔ ایک بے روزگار شخص اپنے خاندان کے لیےغذائیت سے بھرپور خوراک خریدنے کے قابل نہیں ہوپاتا اور یوں ان کی صحت کا معیار بھی گر جاتا ہے۔ ایک کمزور شخص کے پاس کام کرنے کے لیے درکار توانائی کی کمی ہوتی ہے اور اس طرح بے روزگار شخص غریب ہی رہتا ہے۔ اس لئے ہم کہہ سکتے ہیں کہ غربت دیگر مسائل کی بھی جڑ ہے۔

غربت کی وجوہات

پاکستان میں غربت کی بڑی وجہ بڑھتی ہوئی آبادی، کمزور زراعت، بدعنوانی، امیر اور غریب کے درمیان بڑا فرق، بے روزگاری، ناخواندگی، متعدی بیماریاں وغیرہ ہیں۔ عام طور پر خراب زراعت اور بے روزگاری کی وجہ سے لوگوں کو خوراک کی قلت کا سامنا کرنا پڑتا ہے۔ پاکستان میں بڑھتی ہوئی آبادی بھی غربت کی بڑی وجہ ہے۔ زیادہ آبادی کی ضروریات کو پورا کرنے کے لئے خوراک، پیسہ اور گھر کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے اور جب یہ بنیادی ضروریات پوری نہیں ہوتیں تو غربت جنم لیتی ہے۔ اس کے علاوہ، امیر اور غریب کے درمیان کا فرق بھی غربت کی بہت بڑی وجہ ہے۔

غربت کے اثرات

غربت غریب خاندان کی زندگی کو متاثر کرتی ہے۔ ایک غریب آدمی مناسب خوراک اور غذائیت نہیں لے پاتا اور اس کی کام کرنے کی صلاحیت کم ہو جاتی ہے۔ کام کرنے کی صلاحیت میں کمی اس کی آمدنی کو مزید کم کر دیتی ہے جس سے وہ غریب تر ہو جاتا ہے۔ غریب خاندان کے بچوں کو کبھی بھی مناسب تعلیم اور مناسب غذائیت نہیں ملتی۔ انہیں اپنے خاندان کی کفالت کے لیے کام کرنا پڑتا ہے اور اس سے ان کا بچپن تباہ ہو جاتا ہے۔ ان میں سے کچھ چوری، قتل، ڈکیتی وغیرہ جیسے جرائم میں بھی ملوث ہو جاتے ہیں۔ ایک غریب شخص ان پڑھ رہتا ہے اور کچی آبادیوں میں غیر محفوظ حالات میں زندگی گزارنے پر مجبور ہوتا ہے۔ کچی آبادیوں میں صفائی اور پینے کے پانی کی کوئی مناسب سہولت نہیں ہوتی جس کی وجہ سے غریب انسان اکثر بیمار رہتا ہے اور اس کی صحت بگڑ جاتی ہے۔ چنانچہ تمام سماجی برائیوں کا تعلق غربت سے ہے۔

غربت کو جڑ سے ختم کرنے کا حل

اس زمین پر انسانیت کی بھلائی کے لیے غربت کے مسئلے کو فوری طور پر حل کرنا بہت ضروری ہے۔ کچھ چیزیں جو غربت کے مسئلے کو حل کرنے میں بڑا کردار ادا کر سکتی ہیں درج ذیل ہیں:

  • کسانوں کو منافع بخش بنانے کے ساتھ ساتھ اچھی کاشت کاری کے لیے مناسب اور ضروری سہولتیں ملنی چاہئیں۔
  • ناخواندہ افراد کو زندگی کی بہتری کے لیے ضروری تربیت دی جانی چاہیے۔
  • غربت کے خاتمے کے لیے بڑھتی ہوئی آبادی کو روکنا ہو گا۔
  • غربت کے خاتمے کے لیے بدعنوانی (Corruption) کا خاتمہ بھی بہت ضروری ہے۔
  • ہر بچہ سکول جائے اور مکمل تعلیم حاصل کرے۔
  • روزگار کے ایسے راستے ہونے چاہئیں جہاں ہر طبقے کے لوگ مل کر کام کر سکیں۔

نتیجہ (Conclusion)

غربت صرف کچھ لوگوں کا مسئلہ نہیں ہے بلکہ یہ ایک قومی مسئلہ ہے۔ اسے فوری طور پر کچھ موثر طریقوں کے ذریعے حل کیا جانا چاہئے۔ حکومت کی جانب سے غربت کے خاتمے کے لیے مختلف اقدامات کیے گئے ہیں لیکن اب تک کوئی واضح نتائج سامنے نہیں آئے۔ غربت کا خاتمہ عوام، معیشت، معاشرے اور ملک کی مسلسل بڑھتی ہوئی اور جامع ترقی کے لیے بہت ضروری ہے۔ غربت کو جڑ سے اکھاڑ پھینکنے کے لیے ہر فرد کا متحد ہونا بہت ضروری ہے۔

غربت پر دس جملے

1) غربت دنیا کا ایک اہم مسئلہ ہے۔

2) غربت خوراک اور رہائش کی کمی کا نام ہے۔

How can we meaningfully teach historical skills like writing and argumentation if our students can have ChatGPT draft an essay for them in seconds? And how can we assess our students’ understanding of course content if ChatGPT can conjure up instant answers to essay prompts with no learning required? Unsurprisingly, universities, departments, and individual instructors are in a mad scramble to formulate AI policies addressing these urgent questions.

When I first encountered ChatGPT shortly after its November 2022 launch, I admittedly felt a knee-jerk impulse to ban it and forget about it. Like many of my colleagues, I was deeply worried about its potential for academic dishonesty (and I still am). But it was obvious that AI is here to stay. More importantly, as I practiced using ChatGPT, I realized that effective AI use is a learned skill, one today’s students desperately need to learn as chatbots proliferate. If we envision history courses as opportunities to teach the historian’s skill set, we would do well to incorporate new technology like AI into our courses. So, I decided to figure out how I could effectively use ChatGPT in the classroom for my students’ benefit.

Conversations with my students about the chatbot revealed their curiosity about both its uses and limitations . So, I created a classroom experiment to test ChatGPT’s ability to generate authentic, accurate historical essays. I chose to do this experiment live and in person in a spring 2023 upper-level undergraduate history course, but the exercise could also work as a take-home assignment. This particular class, Frederick Douglass’s America, familiarizes students with the life and times of the famous 19th-century abolitionist and introduces the historical research skills that students will need to complete an undergraduate capstone. As we were approaching the semester’s midpoint, I also designed the exercise as an opportunity for students to reflect on what they had learned about Douglass’s life thus far.

Effective AI use is a learned skill, one that today’s students desperately need.

To that end, I asked ChatGPT to “write me an essay about Frederick Douglass and the Civil War.” The program generated a relevant, if basic, biographical sketch of Douglass without “ hallucinating ” any fake information, a notorious shortcoming of ChatGPT. The essay lacked an argument or references, but I didn’t ask for either, so no harm done. Then I graded the essay, which earned a D by my rubric.

Next, I shared the essay with students via Google Docs. (It can be read in full here , along with the lesson plan.) In groups, I asked them to read the essay and identify any sections that needed editing—additions, deletions, or revisions. For 20 minutes, students tackled this assignment in groups and focused on a theme of their choice: Douglass’s life under slavery, his wartime experiences, or his Reconstruction-era activism. Students added their responses in the document using comment bubbles.

Finally, we debriefed. I asked students to describe a factual error they identified and an edit they made to correct or contextualize the essay. Then I asked students to reflect on their biggest takeaway.

This exercise was a smash hit, with terrific student engagement and clear payoffs. Students jumped at the chance to showcase the knowledge they had learned in class to fact-check the essay. Ultimately, they made a few deletions, some additions, and, most importantly, used their higher-order thinking skills to evaluate the essay and add much-needed context to its key points. For example, where ChatGPT matter-of-factly stated that Douglass was born in 1818, students observed that, like many enslaved African Americans, Douglass spent most of his life without knowing his birthdate. This and other legacies of slavery are all too often overlooked by chatbots, which lack contextualization and fine-tuned historical research skills.

Students jumped at the chance to showcase the knowledge they had learned in class to fact-check the essay.

Instead of merely regurgitating information on a midterm exam, students enjoyed probing the limits of what ChatGPT can realistically do—and not do—hopefully disincentivizing future academic misconduct. In their reflections during the debrief, students described how ChatGPT generates essays that seem human-produced and authoritative, but the significant factual errors and lack of analysis in its text often make a poor substitute for how students themselves have learned to write. They also sharpened their writing and editing skills in an engaging activity that felt more pragmatic than a midterm exam.

I learned a lot from this exercise too, which can be adapted readily for a variety of course formats. I came away recognizing that if I had given into the initial impulse to ban ChatGPT, my students would have been robbed of a crucial learning experience to prepare for a world that is rapidly embracing AI. Instead, by incorporating the chatbot into the classroom, my students gained a better understanding of what AI can (and can’t) do, while also sharpening their historical skills and applying their content knowledge.

After all, AI is not disappearing anytime soon, and our students are already using it. Many historians likewise have embraced digital literacy as one of the most essential skills we can teach students, but if educators bury our heads in the sand and attempt to ban AI from the classroom, crucial learning opportunities are lost. So why not bring AI into the classroom and harness its potential to reinforce historical skills and content?

2024 ALC Graduation and Awards Ceremony

On May 2nd, 2024, faculty, staff, students and family members gathered in the Vandenberg Room of the Michigan League to celebrate our 2023-2024 graduates and awardees. The event was hosted by the Asian Languages and Cultures Department Chair, Ben Brose, and the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Juhn Ahn, with faculty members joining to present departmental awards.

The ceremony began with a greeting from Dr. Brose to welcome parents and students to the ceremony, and then moving on to highlighting the great accomplishments of all our students that were recognized. Our first awards acknowledged achivements within each of our language programs. These awardees stood out amongst their peers in both their academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Following the language awards, Director of the South Asian Language Program, Dr. Syed Ali, took the stage to present the South Asian Language Video Awards. Sponsored by the Center for South Asian Studies , these awards were given to students who created an original video project in Hindi or Urdu. The Best Picture Award went to Eshan Barhing, Mili Vij, Kanika Verma, and Simran Guliani for the video project "The Last Day Party."

Additional departmental awards were then presented by members of the department faculty to honor hard work and passion among undergraduate and graduate students.

The twelfth annual  Philip Thomas Lincoln, Jr. Memorial Endowment  was presented by Dr. Christi Merrill to  Shekha Kotak , a Doctoral Candidate in Asian Languages and Cultures. This fellowship is named for a 1964 LSA graduate who was a career diplomat with the U.S. State Department from 1966 to 1996. Lincoln dedicated his life to the betterment of relations between the United States and the countries of Asia, especially China. The Lincoln Fellowship is given to one ALC graduate student a year to assist with funding a proposed research trip abroad. Shekha will be using this award to conduct archival research in New Delhi annd in-person interviews in Gujarat this summer, to benefit her proposed dissertation  Revealing Translations: Caste and Trauma in Dalit Literature.

The  Charles and Myrl Hucker Essay Prize  is a tribute to the scholarly and collegial legacy left behind by Charles O. Hucker, a Professor of Chinese in the department from 1965-1983. It also recognizes the great support and friendship he received from his wife, Myrl. This prize is given annually for the best China-focused essay written in an Asian Languages and Cultures course. Dr. SE Kile presented this award to ALC graduate  Nadir Gerber  for his essay entitled  Repaving the Silk Road: Chinese Cultural Production in Xinjiang.  This essay, written for Dr. Brose's 300-level research seminar, considers the artistic culture, particularly music and dance performance, of Xinjiang as a practical case study of how cultural policies of the Chiense government interact with practical transnational relations.

The seventh annual  Kristin Carosella Memorial Fellowship  named in honor of a 2013 graduate in Asian Studies and Anthropology who, following graduation, pursued a career teaching English to school-age children in China before her death in September 2014. Through generous donations from the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies; the Center for Japanese Studies; the Nam Center for Korean Studies; the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures; the Department of Anthropology; and the Dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, this fellowship has been established in perpetuity to honor her life and to inspire other students to pursue service to others through teaching in Asia. Teaching Professor of Japanese, Yoshihiro Mochizuki, presented the award to  Kerra Hinrichs , who was recently selected as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) for The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). Excelling in all the qualiies essential to teaching and mentoring in her Japanese language classes, Kerra hopes to move to Japan very soon to teach English as a second language.

Following the presentation of awards, our Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Markus Nornes, recognized the hard work of the six students graduating from the Asian Studies major with Honors. Graduating with Honors not only requires completing the major with stellar grades, but also working closely with a faculty member to complete an Honors thesis. The 2024 ALC Honors graduates were:

Scientific research isn’t just about laboratory work. With just a few quick photos or observations, anyone who is interested in working with others to improve their community can be a citizen scientist. 

Citizen science is a form of research that uses crowdsourced knowledge. This often involves community data-gathering for interpretation and use by researchers, which Stanford’s Our Voice  citizen science research initiative refers to as citizen science “for” or “with” the people.

By contrast, their work, which focuses on health equity, enables citizen science “by the people” through engaging community members not only in data collection but also in analysis and use of their collective findings. The Our Voice method emphasizes collaboration with community-engaged researchers and community-based organizations to support residents in becoming agents of local change during their projects and beyond.

The team has found that their approach elicits critical local wisdom (in the form of data) that may not be accessible through traditional research methods. In many cases, data from citizen science projects can also be leveraged by the community itself to inform changes that are both relevant and sustainable.

Here are tips from  Our Voice for engaging with and understanding citizen science:

1. Anyone can be a citizen scientist

Every person has valuable lived experiences that can inform research, educate others, and drive meaningful change. These lived experiences can include insights from daily activities, like picking up the kids from school or crossing a busy street.

Becoming a citizen scientist starts with recognizing that people already use observation in their everyday lives. An example is when you observe things that make it harder or easier to walk to your local community center. These observations, when combined with the observations of others, can help groups to identify high priority concerns that can be improved upon relatively easily.

Citizen science opportunities

Land Talk Land Talk is a citizen science and environmental history project that collects and presents conversations with observers about changes outdoors over time in places they know well. The observers are usually older people who describe changes in a place they have observed for a long time, at least 20 years. Volunteers submit audio and/or video of their conversation with an observer, along with writing about the themes discussed during the conversation, and photographs or drawings of the changes through time. The goal is to provide an opportunity for conversations between generations, and a chance to learn from observers about changes they have seen.

Abuzz: citizen-based mosquito monitoring system Worldwide, over 3 billion people are at risk of contracting mosquito-borne infectious diseases, such as malaria, dengue, and Zika. A simple recording of a mosquito’s buzz on a cellphone could contribute to a global-scale mosquito tracking map that addresses the public health crisis rapidly spreading across continents with devastating consequences. All that’s required to participate is a cellphone to record and submit the buzz of a mosquito, which means almost anyone from around the world can take part in this work. Foldscope – the paper microscope Bioengineering Professor Manu Prakash and his students have designed a paper microscope – the Foldscope – that can be assembled easily and inexpensively. The Foldscope beta instrument has been distributed all over the world. There are many kits to choose from, including individual kits and the Basic Classroom Kit, which includes 20 Foldscopes. Each Foldscope comes with a cellphone attachment module, a nylon carrying pouch, and a set of reusable paper and tape slides. The kit costs $35 plus shipping.

Folding@Home Folding@Home is a distributed computing project. People from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world to help calculate how proteins fold (or misfold). Every computer that participates brings the project closer to its goals.

Investigating ant colony searching Join a citizen science project to investigate how ants work together, without a plan, to explore new areas. Replicate a simple, easy experiment with inexpensive materials that was done in microgravity on the International Space Station. In addition to instructions for running the experiment, this website includes a lesson to help students explore ants and their behavior, ask scientific questions, collect and analyze data, and develop explanations about ant colonies.

2. No observation is too small

The Our Voice team advises citizen scientists to err on the side of capturing more data – even what may initially seem insignificant. The team has found that when citizen scientists share their findings with other residents and discuss them together, the result is often more than the sum of its parts.

Through group discussions and analysis of collective experiences around specific local environments and settings, community members can meet other like-minded individuals and work together to broaden community impact. Community change comes from uniting together, and this type of process can also support new understandings and group connections.

3. It’s a win-win for individuals and their communities

Citizen scientists often report gaining new knowledge about their communities, new ways of activating change, and new connections that they can carry into the future. Our Voice projects have not only led to changes in local life, such as better traffic safety or improved health programming; they have also led to increased community cohesion, policy-level change, and individual-level changes in feelings of agency and connectedness. 

The Our Voice team also has found that after completing an Our Voice project, citizen scientists may generate ideas for additional projects to address other issues that they deem important to their community.

One example of this phenomenon comes from a San Mateo County Our Voice project called FEAST, Food Environment Assessment using the Stanford Tool , which was initiated in 2013 by Stanford postdoctoral fellows Jylana Sheats and Sandra Winter. The initial FEAST project focused on barriers to food access in older, culturally diverse seniors living in San Mateo County. Then, during the next several years, this group of seniors initiated several more citizen science projects on their own, which focused on additional health and well-being issues, including pedestrian safety and senior affordable housing.

4. Citizen science can contribute to better health care

The Our Voice team has found that citizen science can act as a “gateway” for communities to pinpoint important issues and identify relevant stakeholders to drive positive change. For example, the team has seen how this type of community-engaged citizen science can lead to improvements in health care delivery. 

A recent health clinic success story has been a project led by Holly Tabor of the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford Medicine. The project is part of  IDD-TRANSFORM , which strives to prioritize the perspectives and needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across different aspects of health care. Through this work, individuals with IDD have been able to team up with caregivers and health care providers to collect data on what makes it harder or easier for people with IDD to have successful experiences with their health care provider or clinic.

Such efforts to bring together clinics and communities to advance a more comprehensive perspective on health is a priority area for  Stanford Medicine’s Department of Epidemiology & Population Health , where Professor Abby King’s Health Equity Action Research & Technology Solutions (HEARTS) Lab and Our Voice are located.

5. Consider how involved you’d like to be

With projects in more than 25 countries, the Our Voice team notes that a key to their success is to let the community take the lead. 

This community-driven attitude allows a citizen science project to center the unique cultural contexts in which people live, as well as tailor their approaches to different levels of understanding of health equity. The Our Voice team also emphasizes the need for community-specific goals and methods to create effective and lasting change.

Often, citizen scientist data and the resulting analysis are handed over to people or groups in authority – what the Our Voice team refers to as citizen science “with the people,” which has led to important advances across a number of scientific fields. Our Voice works a bit differently by empowering community members to collectively analyze, interpret, and use their own data to drive change in partnership with decision-makers. That is what they mean by citizen science “by the people.” People interested in participating in citizen science should consider what kind of project they prefer, since all forms of citizen science are scientifically important and useful.

6 . Citizen science works

Like other types of science, citizen science efforts should also be reviewed to assess how successful they are and can be. In the case of Our Voice ’s innovative research method, it has received recognition at the local, national, and international levels, and the team has been awarded several major grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue to evaluate the Our Voice method. Dozens of scientific publications have been generated from this participatory action research method, which can be found at the Our Voice website .

The team has been awarded a 2024 Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) seed grant to pilot the use of artificial intelligence as a tool for generating ideas for positive change in communities. They are also exploring new ways of visualizing and analyzing Our Voice data in combination with more traditional “big data” sets as well as information from wearable sensors.

Our Voice is always on the lookout for new ideas and issues that can advance both the science and community impacts of this method, which then can be shared with communities both locally and around the world through the team’s Our Voice Global Network. So, keep an eye out for an Our Voice project coming to a community near you!

Harvard dean’s essay arguing for limiting faculty speech causes uproar

Dean of social science lawrence bobo recently argued that faculty should face the possibility of punishment if they arouse "external intervention into university business.".

After a chaotic year at Harvard University , a dean drew the ire of many with a recent essay arguing that the free speech of faculty should be limited. 

Dean of Social Science Lawrence Bobo made the case in an op-ed that appeared in The Harvard Crimson , the student newspaper, last week. 

“Is it outside the bounds of acceptable professional conduct for a faculty member to excoriate University leadership, faculty, staff, or students with the intent to arouse external intervention into University business? And does the broad publication of such views cross a line into sanctionable violations of professional conduct?” Bobo wrote. “Yes it is and yes it does.”

The ideas in Bobo’s op-ed do not reflect the official position of Harvard, a spokesperson told The Boston Globe . 

The Oct. 7 Hamas attacks and Israel’s subsequent military campaign in Gaza ignited multiple waves of controversy at Harvard that attracted enormous outside attention over the past eight months. Allegations of antisemitism and Islamophobia have been frequent. Former President Claudine Gay stepped down after disastrous testimony at a congressional hearing and allegations of plagiarism . A Pro-Palestinian encampment set up by student demonstrators on campus lasted 20 days, and other acts of protest have been frequent. Harvard was the subject of multiple federal investigations. The topic of necessitating diversity, equity, and inclusion statements provided more fodder for debate. 

Last month, Harvard announced that it would no longer make public statements on issues that don’t immediately affect the “university’s core function.” This is a reason for faculty to use their voices “responsibly,” Bobo wrote. 

He advocated for the benefits of internal discussion and wrote that the expression of diverse opinions is crucial in creating a healthy intellectual community. Academic departments, faculty meetings, town halls, and campus publications should be used regularly to facilitate participation in university governance, he wrote.  

But there are some faculty members who have large external platforms that they can use for “potential advocacy.” Bobo referenced a few by name: Raj Chetty , Henry Louis Gates Jr. , Jill Lepore , and Steven Pinker . 

“Would it simply be an ordinary act of free speech for those faculty to repeatedly denounce the University, its students, fellow faculty, or leadership? The truth is that free speech has limits — it’s why you can’t escape sanction for shouting ‘fire’ in a crowded theater,” Bobo wrote. 

It is problematic for faculty members to encourage students to violate university policies even after they have received official notification of a potential infraction, Bobo wrote. 

“Such behavior should have sanctionable limits as well,” he wrote. 

One professor, who was granted anonymity by the Globe , said that it represents an “authoritarian mindset” to suggest that members of an institution should be punished for criticizing that institution. 

Ten members of Harvard’s Council on Academic Freedom, including Pinker, published a response in the Crimson Wednesday. Bobo’s op-ed represented an “unprecedented repudiation of the principle of academic freedom,” they wrote, while declaring that they strongly reject his arguments.

Bobo’s op-ed is made all the more problematic by the power he has on campus, they wrote. 

“It is downright alarming that such a stunning argument would come from a dean who currently wields power over hundreds of professors — without indicating that he would refrain from implementing his views by punishing the faculty he oversees,” the members of the Council on Academic Freedom wrote. 

In the initial op-ed, Bobo wrote about the “appallingly rough manner” in which some affiliated with Harvard have denounced the university’s students and current leadership. This includes “one former University president,” apparently an oblique reference to Lawrence Summers. 

Summers criticized the university for its silence in the immediate aftermath of Oct. 7, publicly blamed Harvard’s leaders for not doing enough to combat antisemitism, and said that campus protests could encourage adversaries of the U.S.

Summers responded to Bobo’s op-ed on social media.

Walter Johnson, the “Israel demonizing faculty” mentioned by Summers, is a history professor and former adviser to the Palestine Solidarity Committee at Harvard. In a statement to the Globe , Johnson called Bobo’s essay misguided. 

“Look, I also wish I could turn down some of my colleagues,” Johnston told the paper. “I’m sure some of them wish they could turn me down. But expanding the already abused disciplinary apparatus of the university to punish faculty for speaking out about the issues, even if in ways that one group or another might view as counterproductive, seems, at the very least, counterproductive.”

After Affirmative Action Ban, They Rewrote College Essays With a Key Theme: Race

The Supreme Court’s ruling intended to remove the consideration of race during the admissions process. So students used their essays to highlight their racial background.

Bernard Mokam interviewed dozens of high school students, parents and counselors about preparing college applications in a new landscape.

Astrid Delgado first wrote her college application essay about a death in her family. Then she reshaped it around a Spanish book she read as a way to connect to her Dominican heritage.

Deshayne Curley wanted to leave his Indigenous background out of his essay. But he reworked it to focus on an heirloom necklace that reminded him of his home on the Navajo Reservation.

The first draft of Jyel Hollingsworth’s essay explored her love for chess. The final focused on the prejudice between her Korean and Black American families and the financial hardships she overcame.

All three students said they decided to rethink their essays to emphasize one key element: their racial identities. And they did so after the Supreme Court last year struck down affirmative action in college admissions, leaving essays the only place for applicants to directly indicate their racial and ethnic backgrounds.

High school students graduating this year worked on their college applications, due this month, in one of the most turbulent years in American education. Not only have they had to prepare them in the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war — which sparked debates about free speech and antisemitism on college campuses, leading to the resignation of two Ivy League presidents — but they also had to wade through the new ban on race-conscious admissions.

“It has been a lot to take in,” said Keteyian Cade, a 17-year-old from St. Louis. “There is so much going on in the world right now.”
