How to Write a Speech About Someone I Admire

Kimberley McGee

Tips on Writing a Welcome Address at a High School Graduation

It is an honor to be asked or to be able to write a speech about someone that you admire. When the task is to write a speech, it can feel like a daunting endeavor, particularly when the subject is someone you look up to or who had a large impact on your life. Whether it is for an award ceremony or a school assignment, family reunion or wedding anniversary, cobbling together a compelling speech about someone you admire can be a moving moment as well as an enjoyable experience.

Getting Started on Speech Writing

Before you reach for all the words, begin with just a few. Create an outline that will touch on your key points. Consider the person and jot down what comes to mind when you concentrate on the individual as well as how he or she has made an impact on you and others. If it is a family member, reach into the past and showcase some of his or her early experiences.

Once you have a relatively rough outline of what you hope to touch on, write your introduction. The introduction sets the tone and grabs your audience. Some ways to craft an attention-grabbing introduction is to start with a question, a well-known joke or anecdote. Make sure it is something that the entire audience can understand.

Person I Admire Speech Body Basics

When writing a speech about someone you admire, turn your attention not only to the person, but accomplishments, inflections of speech or other personal traits. There are two objectives when giving a speech, to make a good impression and leave the audience with a clear and informative understanding of your subject. Consider your audience before sitting down to write your speech. The missive should reflect the occasion, either light and jovial or stern and touching. Focus your audience’s attention on the main facts quickly by giving a preview in the opening descriptive paragraph. Establish goodwill from the beginning and grab the crowd’s attention with a pithy turn of phrase or poignant piece of literature.

Reach Out for Inspiration

Look at an example of a speech about someone who was admired for speech writing tips. Comedian and actress Maya Rudolph gave a gripping commencement speech in 2015 that focused on people that she admired. These included her family as well as people she admired in the industry, including Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce. If you need moments of inspiration while you are writing your speech about someone you admire, turn to those who have gone before you. Studying compelling speeches can help you understand how to convey emotion and impact through your carefully chosen words. If you are writing about family members, ask those who have given speeches in the past for encouragement.

How to Write a Speech About Someone I Admire

By lorraine ramirez / in science & education.

Tribute speeches are the time to recognise your subject's accomplishments.

Whether for a school assignment, an award ceremony, or a wedding or anniversary honouring a loved one or friend, you may be asked to make a tribute speech about a person that you admire. Prepare in advance, finding the right words to express your reasons for admiring your subject. Structure your written speech for the greatest impact and to make it memorable.

  • Whether for a school assignment, an award ceremony, or a wedding or anniversary honouring a loved one or friend, you may be asked to make a tribute speech about a person that you admire.
  • Structure your written speech for the greatest impact and to make it memorable.

Write an outline of your key points. Make a list of why you admire this person and others should too. Note their values, actions or accomplishments. For example, record ways your grandfather managed to become one of the first successful businessmen in his community or how your mother and father have stayed happily married together for 50 years while raising you and your siblings.

Write an introduction. Keep your audience in mind and adjust your level of formality depending on the situation. Start with an effective attention grabber - a question, anecdote, or joke - that introduces the subject of your speech. Use an attention grabber that your whole audience will understand and appreciate. Avoid inside jokes or obscure references.

Move along steadily. After the attention grabber, move into introducing your subject and giving some general overall reasons why this person deserves praise and recognition. Use a transition to bridge your introduction and body paragraphs, such as: "And therefore, I want to briefly mention a few reasons why I hold Mr. King in such high esteem."

  • Keep your audience in mind and adjust your level of formality depending on the situation.
  • After the attention grabber, move into introducing your subject and giving some general overall reasons why this person deserves praise and recognition.

Develop your general ideas in the body of your speech. Use your outline to guide you through your key points when writing your body paragraphs. Offer concrete supporting examples for each of your points. For instance, if you were talking about your English professor and wanted everyone to know how amiable he was, explain how on numerous occasions you would bombard him with concerns about your work and how he took the time and effort to help you, always with a smile. Be brief in your examples.

  • Develop your general ideas in the body of your speech.
  • Use your outline to guide you through your key points when writing your body paragraphs.

Add a conclusion. Don't re-list all your reasons, but briefly touch on your key points to reinforce them to your audience. Conclude your speech with as strong an impact as possible. For example, "Mr. King has been an invaluable resource to this company because of his many years of dedicated and loyal service, his incredible work ethic and innovative approach to generating exciting and new ideas for this company. It is with deep respect and gratitude that we honour him here tonight."

How to Write a Descriptive Essay About a Person You Admire

how do you write a speech about a person you admire

Writing a descriptive essay, or a “describe a person you admire” essay, can be a fantastic way to develop your writing skills. These skills will be particularly useful if you choose to write fiction.

This type of writing is very different from academic writing, but it is hugely rewarding, and doing it well can become a stepping stone into a career in writing in the United Kingdom. If you’re ever unsure about your work, using an essay writing service for UK students can provide valuable feedback and guidance.

Step One: Choose Your Subject/Brainstorm

The essay about someone you admire could focus on, for example, your father, your mother, a friend, a grandparent, a celebrity like UK favorite Kate Middleton, a public figure like Mahatma Gandhi, or your favorite teacher.

Write a paragraph about the person you admire as you brainstorm. Think about what message you want to get across.

Step Two: Write Your First Draft

Your first draft is exactly that—a first draft. Don’t worry too much about everything being perfect. The most important thing at this point is getting all your thoughts down on paper.

Remember, this is a descriptive essay about a person you love and feel admiration for—you want the reader to feel as though they know the person after reading your piece.

A good writer can make you feel as though you know a person. A great writer makes you care about the person.

Show, Don’t Tell

I’m sure you’ve come across this term before. It’s the mantra of most creative writers and their teachers. But what does it actually mean?

It’s simple, really. Use words to build up a picture in your reader’s mind. Don’t just tell them things; let them see it in their mind.

For example:

  • Telling – The man was angry.
  • Showing – The man jumped to his feet, his face red and frowning. He gave an unintelligible roar, spraying spittle in front of his face. He crossed the room in three quick strides, wrenching the door open and slamming it shut behind him.

Do you see the difference there? You can show the reader that the man is angry without even using the word. I’m sure I don’t need to explain why showing is a better writing technique.

Use the Senses

To really bring your piece to life and make the reader feel a personal connection to your writing, use all of the senses:

  • Sight – Describe the physical attributes of the person.
  • Sound – What does their speech sound like?
  • Touch – What do they feel like—for example, are their hands rough from years of hard work?
  • Smell – What smells do you associate with the person? Did they always wear a certain scent?
  • Taste – Do you associate any tastes with the person? Did they have a signature cake recipe that no one can match?

Step Three: Edit

Reread your work, concentrating on the following:

  • Does the essay flow well? If not, re-order your paragraphs until it does.
  • Try to imagine you are reading about a stranger. Have you included enough details to make you feel like you know them? Do you know what they look like? Do you feel as though you understand their character and motivations?
  • Have you shown rather than told?

Of course, check your spelling, punctuation, and grammar too. Have you used clichés? Too many adjectives? If you’re still unsure, you might wonder, "Can I write my essay for me safely with professional help?" The answer is yes, by choosing a reliable service.

If, at the end of the piece, you feel something toward the person, you have done a good job!

250 Words Essay on The Person You Admire the Most

Admiration is a profound emotion that stems from the recognition of someone’s exceptional qualities. The person I admire the most is not a global icon or a multi-billionaire, but a humble educator: my high school English teacher, Mrs. Smith.

Inspiration in Education

Mrs. Smith’s dedication to her profession was unparalleled. She embodied the essence of an ideal teacher, always going the extra mile to ensure every student understood the subject matter. Her innovative teaching methods, combining traditional and modern pedagogical tools, made learning engaging and enjoyable.

Empathy Personified

Beyond her professional commitment, what truly sets Mrs. Smith apart was her empathetic nature. She was always attentive to the emotional wellbeing of her students. She created a safe space where students could express their fears and anxieties without judgment.

Unwavering Belief in Potential

Mrs. Smith had an unwavering belief in her students’ potential. She encouraged us to push our boundaries, to dream big, and to never let failures deter us. This faith she had in us often made us believe in ourselves, even in the face of adversity.

In conclusion, Mrs. Smith is the person I admire the most. Her dedication, empathy, and belief in her students’ potential left an indelible mark on me. She taught me more than just the nuances of English literature; she taught me the value of empathy, the importance of perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself.

500 Words Essay on The Person You Admire the Most

Early life and struggles.

Albert Einstein, born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany, is a testament to the fact that academic brilliance does not always predict future success. He was a late talker and performed poorly in school. Yet, his curiosity about the mysteries of the universe was unquenchable. He pursued knowledge with a passion that eventually led him to become one of the most influential scientists in history.

Scientific Achievements

Einstein’s contributions to science are unparalleled. His theory of relativity revolutionized the way we understand the universe. His equation, E=mc², which describes the equivalence of energy (E) and mass (m), has been dubbed the world’s most famous equation. These achievements are not what I admire most about him, though. It’s his relentless pursuit of knowledge and his ability to think beyond the conventional that truly inspire me.

Character and Values

Einstein’s legacy extends beyond his scientific contributions. He has become a symbol of genius and creativity. His life story encourages us to question, explore, and never stop learning. His perseverance in the face of adversity serves as a reminder that success is not always a straight path but often a winding journey filled with challenges.

Albert Einstein’s life and achievements embody the characteristics that I admire the most: resilience, curiosity, humility, and a deep respect for all humanity. His relentless pursuit of knowledge, despite the obstacles he faced, inspires me to approach my own challenges with the same determination. His humility and respect for all individuals, regardless of their status, remind me of the kind of person I aspire to be. It is for these reasons that Albert Einstein is the person I admire the most.

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

How to Write a Descriptive Paragraph About a Person (With Examples)

4-minute read

  • 7th January 2023

Describing a person or character is difficult for even the most successful authors. It requires a balance of words to make sure they shine through without the language being too heavy. In this article, we’ll look at how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person, share some examples, and talk about different strategies.

1.   Brainstorm Your Ideas

Brainstorming is crucial to any writing process. It’s the process in which you think of ideas for what you’d like to write about. In this case, you’re writing a descriptive paragraph about a person. It’s important to use adjectives to describe the features or characteristics you want to focus on.

One way to come up with ideas for a descriptive paragraph about a person is to go through the five senses. Use the questions below to get some ideas for what you want to highlight about your person.

Appeal to your reader’s senses – smell, taste, sound, sight, and touch

Smell: How does the person smell? Do they wear perfume? Are they doing an activity that would make them have a certain smell?

Taste: Do you associate a certain food with this person? Does it make you think of a specific taste? Can you taste something due to a certain smell they have?

Sound: Do they have a unique voice or laugh? Are they doing an activity that has distinctive sounds?

Sight: What prominent features do they have? For example, think about their dressing style, their smile, or their surroundings. What do you see them doing in your mind when you see a photo of them? What memories do you have of this person? Does this person remind you of something or someone?

Touch: What textures do you see? For example, imagine their skin or clothing. How does it feel if you hug them?

2.   Begin With a Short and Snappy Sentence

Like with any type of writing, you want to hook your reader so that they want to continue reading. In this case, you can use a topic sentence, if appropriate, to introduce your reader to the person. For example:

Or, if you want to be more creative, you can reel them in with a short and snappy sentence about this person. This is called a writing hook . This sentence should focus on a stand-out detail or characteristic about the person you’re describing. For example:

3.   Describe the Person

Now, this is the hard part. But, if you’ve brainstormed plenty of ideas and know which ones you want to focus on, it will be easier. Let’s look at some examples to get a better idea of how to write a descriptive paragraph about a person using the prompt “describe a person you admire.”

Comments: This paragraph is pretty typical of most students. It gives lots of visual details of the person and uses a simile or two (“ Her eyes are like the color of honey” and “Her smile shines like the sun” ). While this strategy gets the job done, it’s not very exciting to read. In fact, it can be quite boring!

Let’s look at how we can rewrite this to make it more exciting.

Comments: In this example, we focused on one defining characteristic of the person we are describing — her laugh. This strategy places more focus on the person you’re describing, rather than the adjectives you use to describe them.

4.   Edit and Revise

After you write your descriptive paragraph, be sure to read it over. Read it out loud. Read it in a funny voice. Doing this will help you to hear the words and identify which parts do not work or sound awkward.

5.   General Tips for Descriptive Writing

●  Avoid using too many descriptive words.

●  Remember to show the reader, not tell.

●  Appeal to the reader’s five senses – smell, touch, taste, sight, and sound.

●  Focus on a striking or defining characteristic.

●  Use contrasting details from other people or surroundings for emphasis.

●  Use literary devices (metaphors, similes etc.) sparingly and with intention.

●  Use a hook to reel your reader in.

●  Use a variety of short and long sentences.

●  Practice creative writing exercises to improve your descriptive writing skills.

●  Always edit and revise your writing.

Sample Responses — “Describe a Person You Admire “

“More often than not, if you ask people this question, they might mention a celebrity, a politician, or someone famous. But for me, the person I most admire is a family member.

Family is priceless. It’s where we find unconditional support and love. That’s why the person I look up to the most is my father. He’s the pillar of our family, my hero. His remarkable qualities make him someone I deeply admire.

He has guided me through life, helping me excel both personally and professionally. From my earliest days to adulthood, he’s been there, offering gentle guidance and teaching me to make my own decisions. Crucially, he’s never imposed his will on me; instead, he’s empowered me to choose wisely. It’s thanks to him that I’ve become a respected writer in our community. When he learned of my passion for writing, he selflessly supported me, ensuring I had the tools to pursue my dreams.

Now retired, my father spends his time cherishing family and friends. He and my mother enjoy outings together, reliving their youth. His love for gardening is another passion; he tends to our front garden with care, often asking me to capture moments with his beloved flowers.

I admire my father for his integrity, compassion, and unwavering sense of duty. He never shies away from responsibility, whether it’s caring for a sick family member or quietly aiding those in need. I feel incredibly blessed to have such an incredible father in my life.”

Follow-up Question 1:

Does your father know how much you admire him?

“Yes, I have told him before and I would definitely continue to let him know how much I admire and respect him not just as my father but as a person as well. He deserves to know the kind of impact he had on me and my siblings.”

Follow-up Question 2:

Do you think you would also become a good father in the future?

“It’s really hard to know what the future holds, but if I would be like my father, even half of what he has accomplished, I’d be extremely grateful. He has become a good father to me and my siblings and a good husband to my mom and we couldn’t ask for anything. I sure hope to be like him when the time comes. “

“I admire a lot of people, but today, I’d like to share a story about one of my high school instructors. She had a big influence on me and was someone I looked up to as a role model.

Her name is Mrs. Lou, and she was my Math teacher for three years in high school. She was in her fifties and had a lot of experience as a teacher. She was also my form teacher, so we saw each other almost every day. She adored us and treated us as though we were her sons and daughters. For example, she always brought some medicines with her so that if any of her students developed a cold, coughed, or had any other illness, she could treat them right away.

Above all, the way she taught us in the class had the greatest impact on me. Her dedication to teaching inspired me to pursue Math, despite my previous lack of interest in the subject. I was able to ace the entrance exam in college with an excellent Math grade, thanks to her effective teaching technique. I was also impressed by her way of life, which was so modest and deserving of respect that I wanted to emulate it. She always gave us advice regarding whatever challenges we had because she is a warm-hearted person. I had the impression that she was a friend with whom I could share everything.

Despite the fact that we have all graduated from high school, my friends and I still visit her on weekends to tell her about our university lives.”

Do you ever think she’d be someone you would admire when you first stepped into her class?

“To be honest, I had no idea she’d be someone who would have a great impact on my life. Mathematics is one of those subjects that I do not like. It’s something I have struggled in even in grade school. But as time goes by, and the fact that she has made everything about Math so simple just for me and my classmates to learn about it, is something I would always remember about her.”

What else about her do you like the most?

“She has a lot of qualities about her that make her stand out from the rest of my previous teachers. She takes an extra effort to assist me and my classmates with lessons we are having difficulties with. Sometimes, she would stay in school late just to give us extra lessons. That’s something we admire about her because during those times, she didn’t get any extra pay. She did it because she was passionate about her profession.”

Speaking part 3 sample questions for ‘the person you admire the most.’

What qualities, according to you, are required for any person to be admired?

Do you think people who are famous are more admired than others?

  • What do people see when they admire people?
  • Which celebrities, according to you, should be admired more? Politicians, authors, sports person or movie star?

In general, people listed above are admired more. Do you think that scientists or army men should be admired more?

Do you think people also see the weaknesses of the people they follow or they just avoid them?

  • In what ways can people be similar to each other?
  • Do you think daughters are more similar to mother than to male relatives?
  • What about sons and fathers?
  • In terms of personality, are people more similar to their family or friends? In what ways?

Speaking part 3 sample questions with answers

Well, there are many qualities a person should possess to be admired such as bravery, kindness and helping nature. But the single most important quality is the helping nature of that person which makes him admired among other people.

In one sense, yes. People who are famous have accomplished success in their life. This success can transfix so many people and they get flattered by these famous people.

However, to get flattered by famous people and admire them are totally different. Even famous people should have the qualities such as compassion and honesty to get admired.

Which celebrities, according to you, should be admired more ? politicians, authors, sports person or movie star?

I think the person should not be admired because of certain talent he has got. He should be admired for the human qualities. If a movie star is highly popular and successful but does not have helpful nature.or a politician who does not possess compassion for poor people should not be admired.

There is no doubt that scientists and army people should be admired more because they are far superior in each of the facet than any movies star or cricketers.

It depends on people, some people blindly follow famous people irrespective of what they are in their real life. Sometime people forgive small misbehavior or weakness of the people they admire. They think that they are also human being.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card

how do you write a speech about a person you admire

Describe a person you admire the most

Who is this person?

How you know him/her?

What qualities he/she has?

And explain why you admire this person?

Many people have inspired me in my life, but the person I admire the most is my mother. She is a strong woman who held me close and safe even in the most difficult times. Not only is she a great parent but also a remarkable teacher. She teaches science to high school students and has conducted many workshops to demonstrate the use of eco-friendly products in our daily lives. Moreover, she believes in reuse and recycling methods; she makes flowerpots out of used bottles and grows plants in them.

She is a kind-hearted lady who always lends a helping hand to anyone in need. She conducts scholarship drives to help students who cannot afford tuition fees which I find inspiring. Besides, she has a great sense of humor and can turn a bad day into a good one. I share all of my  woes  with her as she has a  jovial  nature and always tries to understand a situation from my perspective instead of jumping to conclusions. This has helped me not to lie about anything in general and to be upfront about my thoughts and feelings.

Although we sometimes have disagreements, we have an undying bond that connects us. I have learned to be compassionate and patient because of my mother and I am proud to have such an inspiring woman in my life. I aspire to be independent and have my own identity as she does.

Vocabulary:

  • Remarkable- exceptional
  • Woes- troubles
  • Jovial- cheerful and friendly
  • Compassionate- showing sympathy for others

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. do you think people who are famous are more admired than others.

On an average, I think you're likely to find that you consider at least most of them good, generous, hospitable, caring people. You might be tempted to think those people really are just ‘better’ people, because maybe being a ‘better’ person makes you more likely to be rich and successful. You would be wrong. The truth is that being successful makes people see you as a better person. Why? Because our brains are hard-wired to indiscriminately make the assumption that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people.

2. Which celebrities, according to you, should be admired more? Politicians, authors, sports person or movie star?

In my perspective, if any celebrity is genuinely concerned about the well being of his fellow humans and goes out of the way to contribute towards their welfare, then he or she deserves to be admired irrespective of the field he or she is in.

3. Do you think that scientists or army men should be admired more?

Both scientists and the army men deserve to be admired and recognised for their selfless service to their countries. Only men and women of high calibre can be in theses positions and hence we need to be indebted to their services.

4. Do you think people also see the weaknesses of the people they follow or they just avoid them?

As human beings each and every one of us has got our own strengths and weaknesses. The same is true in the case of celebrities too. If a person has attained celebrity status through his good nature, then his or her fans try to overlook his or her weaknesses too and don’t make a big deal out of it.

A person you admire

Powered by RedCircle

Hello and welcome to Learn English Vocabulary. My name is Jack and I’m making this podcast for you to learn or revise English vocabulary. You can find a transcript of this podcast on LearnEnglishVocabulary.co.uk. There’s a page for this podcast with the transcript, an activity and a task for you to do in the comments section.

Today, I want to talk about people I admire. You see, a little while ago, I made a podcast about negative adjectives , adjectives you can use to describe people you don’t like and I thought I should make a podcast that focuses on positive characteristics . So I’m going to focus on adjectives that you can use to describe people you like, adjectives you can use to describe a person’s character and not their appearance.

I’m going to present this language in five short interviews. In each interview, I’m going to be answering questions about a person I admire. The verb admire has two main meanings. The first means to find something attractive to look at. So you might admire a friend’s new car or perhaps on a trip to Rome, you admire the architecture and all the historic buildings. However, if you admire a person, it means you respect them and like the way they behave. The five people I want to talk about today are all people I respect and I admire them because of their personalities and characteristics.

After the podcast, I have created some speaking activities that you can do on Learn English Vocabulary that will help you practise using the language and that will help you develop your fluency and speaking skills. There is a link on the Learn English Vocabulary website on the side of this page where you can sign up to join the speaking lessons.

OK … let’s get started.

Here’s interview one.

Tell me about a person that you admire., who are they and how do you know or know about them.

OK – someone I admire. Well, the first person that I admire is my grandfather. He was a very old fashioned man in many ways, but he had some characteristics that I think are quite rare these days.

Why do you admire him? What characteristics do you admire?

Well, he had integrity. He knew his own mind and was not prepared to compromise or change his principles. This was very important to him. He was straight-talking and completely honest. He was honourable in a way that you don’t often see these days. He was also a very intelligent man who managed to earn a degree without going to university. At least, that’s the story I was told. He managed to teach himself the knowledge required to sit the exams and passed, while working a full-time job.

Why do you think he was honourable?

This might sound strange, but he wasn’t ambitious and at work, he refused to suck up to his bosses. He did his job to the best of his ability, but at the end of the day, he put his pen down and went home. He would never have dreamed of lying or cheating anyone. But when he had done a fair days work, he stopped and went home to his family. I think he may have missed out on promotions because of this attitude, but I have always had a lot of respect for him because of it.

Interview number two

One person that I’ve always admired was a teacher at my school called Mrs Evans. She was my religious studies and theology teacher and she really taught me how to think. That sounds strange when I say it now, but it’s true.

Why do you admire Mrs. Evans? What characteristics do you admire?

Mrs Evans was a great teacher. One of the things I admired was that she was really open-minded. If anyone brought up a strange or new idea in class, she would always treat the ideas with respect and consider them, even if they seemed silly. She never dismissed anything without thinking about it first or at least gave me and my classmates the chance to discuss it first. She was also really flexible.

Why do you think she’s flexible?

Well, there was never a classroom situation that seemed to trouble her. If we were having a discussion and it went off in a strange direction and it would during most lessons, she would gently nudge and make suggestions until we were discussing the class material again. I think part of this was that she was very understanding. She could sense how people were feeling and offered help when they needed it and also challenged them when they needed it. She really challenged me a couple of times and it was difficult when it happened, but she was understanding enough to know that I needed it and could cope with it so I learnt a lot from the experience.

Interview number three

This time, I want to talk about a man called Michael. This is someone I have worked with for a long time now. Michael is a colleague of mine who actually interviewed me for a job almost 10 years ago.

Why do you admire Michael? What characteristics do you admire?

Michael is a really kind guy. He’s very open emotionally and is genuinely warm-hearted. He makes friends easily – he must have hundreds of friends, and he genuinely cares about all of them. He’s really generous with his time and money and loves being out with people.

Why do you think he’s kind?

This is quite difficult to say. It’s not like he’s into charity or grand acts of generosity. But when you are with him, he talks about himself openly, he’s not guarded or closed and he asks about me and my family with real interest and concern. And later, he remembers what I have told him and always asks with concern after my family. He’s just a really kind person.

Interview number four

OK – a person I admire is my wife. How do I know her? Well, I married her and we have two children. Being a parent with someone teaches you a lot about them.

Why do you admire your wife? What characteristics do you admire?

There are lots of characteristics that I admire. My wife is probably the bravest person I know. She has very protective instincts I think. She is also really sensitive. She’s a teacher as well, but mostly teaches young children and she has an incredible way of sensing how her pupils are feeling and getting on. She’s also incredibly supportive of me in my work and really patient.

Why do you think she’s brave and sensitive and supportive and patient?

Ha ha – OK. Years ago, we were living in Cairo in Egypt. We had been on holiday in Dahab on the Red sea and had just got back to Cairo. One of my colleagues had been there at the same time with her mum. As we were getting off the bus, we were crossing the street and My colleague’s mum fell over. Me and my colleague both looked up the road to see if any traffic was coming and there was a bus heading straight towards us. I looked back to my friend’s mum and my wife was already there, picking her up. While I was assessing the situation and the danger, my wife hadn’t hesitated. This might not sound like a big deal, but the streets in Cairo are scary and at the time I felt shame that I had not reacted sooner but also huge admiration for my wife.

I think I explained why I think she is sensitive. She has a way with people, especially children and I think this is because she can sense or understands their feelings and needs.

She’s supportive of me – I’ve been working in different places and on different projects and this has meant moving away from her family and just being there for me when I have been having problems with my own work

And she’s patient because … well, she has put up with me and wait for me and deal with my problems and she very rarely complains. I think she has to be really patient to do that.

Interview number five

The last person I want to talk about is an old friend. I’ve not seen or spoken to him for a very long time now and he’s a very private person so I’m not going to use his real name. Instead, I’m going to call him Eric.

Why do you admire Eric? What characteristics do you admire?

Eric is possibly the best company I’ve ever had. He’s incredibly charming. When he wants to, he can make a room full of people like him. Everybody wants to be his friend.

He’s funny, he’s like a comedian. He doesn’t really tell jokes, he just has a funny way of looking at the world and he’s witty. This is like being funny, but it’s related to intelligence. So he makes clever funny comments and responds really quickly to funny situations.

Why do you think he’s charming?

I’m not sure. He’s not suave and sophisticated like James Bond, though he might like to think so. He’s got a bit of an attitude of not caring about things, like he’s a bit cool about most things so when he pays attention to you and wants to entertain you it makes you feel important or special in some way.

In these interviews, I have described people who are intelligent , honest and honourable , open – minded , flexible and understanding , kind , warm – hearted and generous , brave , sensitive , supportive and patient and funny , witty and charming .

I’m going to put an activity on the lesson page and a speaking activity together for people who want to join Learn English Vocabulary. These speaking classes are a new part of the Learn English Vocabulary website and at the moment, I’m going to offer some memberships for free, but in the future, there will have to be a small cost if they are popular as the platform and tools I’m using are not free. I would also really like to be able to work on these resources fulltime.

If you have enjoyed this podcast, please leave me a comment or a rating or a review. I love to hear from you and any comments or suggestions you have. If there are any topics or songs or scenes from a film that you would like me to talk about or anything else you would like to hear, I would be delighted to make a podcast for you. So please visit LearnEnglishVocabulary.co.uk and say hello.

Thanks for listening.
