Hong kong exam authority urges respect for others as netizens criticise michelle obama on social media.
23rd April 2023 – (Hong Kong) On the first day of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exam, which began on 21st April, students took the English Language exam , which included a reading comprehension section featuring a passage from an article and autobiography written by Michelle Obama , the former First Lady of the United States . However, some students found the questions difficult and took to Michelle Obama’s inactive social media platforms to criticise the exam, with some comments containing offensive language and discriminatory remarks.
In response to the criticism, the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) stated that it understands the importance of exam performance to students, but urges individuals to express their opinions in a respectful and courteous manner.
The HKEAA explained that the exam questions are designed in accordance with the curriculum and assessment guidelines, and that the selection of reading materials takes into account the language proficiency of students, the relevance of the topics to daily life and experiences, as well as the educational significance and interest of the content.

Eunice Lam Dozens of candidates left disrespectful comments on former US first lady Michelle Obama's Instagram page after an extract from her book was used in the English language exam of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education. The comments prompted the exams authority and others to tell students to be respectful. Friday's English reading exam - the first paper of this year's university entry exams - had one question featuring a personal essay written by the wife of former president Barack Obama as well as an extract from her memoir Becoming. The memoir was published in 2018 and was later released in 24 languages. But some Hong Kong students found passages in Becoming difficult to understand and took their frustrations to Obama's social media page. Some left comments with foul language and racist and sexist connotations while others attacked the Obama couple. One wrote: "While Barack ruined [lots] of young lives in the Middle East, Michelle followed her husband's footsteps by ruining the lives of 2023 HKDSE peeps by ruining our grades! Good job Obamas." Some went to Michelle Obama's Instagram with "BOOOOOOOOMMMM" - a phrase that appeared on another passage in the reading exam. They also blamed her for ruining their university dream. One candidate posted: "Michelle, if my [Joint University Programs Admissions System] results [are low] it's on you." Some Hongkongers later apologized to Obama on her page and urged exam candidates to calm down. "She wrote the book but [was] not the one [who] designed your DSE paper," one commenter said. "DSEers for 2023, please leave her alone." Another wrote: "Though Michelle probably doesn't read any of the nonsense just wanna say this is so crazy. Blaming one's failure on others is that the future of HK?" When selecting materials the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, a spokeswoman said, considers the language ability of candidates, the interest and educational significance of the topics, and the relevance of materials to the candidates' daily lives. And candidates "should remain polite and respectful when expressing their opinions." This year's English reading paper was one of the most challenging in recent years, teachers said. In the passage, Obama wrote about her childhood and growth under the nurturing of her mother Mariam Robinson and her aunt Robbie, who taught piano. Speaking after the reading exam, an English teacher from CMA Secondary School in Sham Shui Po said it would have been challenging for some students to understand the cultural differences. "Most of us would know who Michelle Obama is," Fiona Pang said. "But some students may not understand the parenting style and family values." Ng Po-shing, a student consultant for the Hok Yau Club, told students to focus on upcoming exams as "it is indeed a waste of time to look back on exams that have already finished as we can't change the answers." He added that perhaps only a few students had commented at first, but after the issue hit forums more people went to Obama's Instagram. "I don't think those commenting were all DSE candidates." | ||

Michelle Obama Shares Her Lessons on Motherhood in a Moving Personal Essay
Former first lady Michelle Obama has always had sage advice to share in speeches; in her best-selling book, Becoming ; and now in a new personal essay in People . In honor of Mother's Day, Obama penned a deeply personal essay in which she describes the important lessons her own mother, Marian Robinson, passed onto her.
"My mother is a woman who chooses her words carefully. She’ll sometimes speak in clipped sentences, her wisdom packed into short bursts and punctuated with an infectious smile or a wry laugh. It’s a style that makes her a favorite of everyone she meets—a sweet, witty companion who doesn’t need the limelight," Obama wrote.
Obama added that as she grew older, she realized just how important that manner of conversation really was and how it truly reflected her mother's parenting style. "Because when it came to raising her kids, my mom knew that her voice was less important than allowing me to use my own," she wrote.
According to Obama, that meant her mother "listened a lot more than she lectured" when answering all the questions a younger Michelle threw her way.
"Why did we have to eat eggs for breakfast? Why do people need jobs? Why are the houses bigger in other neighborhoods? She didn’t chide me if I scrapped with some of the neighbor kids or challenged my ornery grandfather when I thought he was being a little too ornery," Obama wrote. "She listened intently to the lunchtime conversations I had with my schoolmates over bologna sandwiches and nodded patiently along to tales of my contentious piano lessons with my great aunt Robbie."
Obama continued that in today’s world, it may be easy to see her mother's actions as "negligent" because she allowed her children to "rule the roost." But, she noted, the reality was far from that.
"She and my father, Fraser, were wholly invested in their children, pouring a deep and durable foundation of goodness and honesty, of right and wrong, into my brother and me. After that, they simply let us be ourselves," she wrote.
Obama added that now, as a mother of two nearly grown women, she sees just how important that freedom is.
"I see now how important that kind of freedom is for all children, particularly for girls with flames of their own—flames the world might try to dim," she wrote. "It’s up to us, as mothers and mother figures, to give the girls in our lives the kind of support that keeps their flame lit and lifts up their voices—not necessarily with our own words, but by letting them find the words themselves."

Hong Kong teachers say pupils should not have been surprised by questions on former first lady Michelle Obama’s book extract used in English exam
- One expert says the passage was not too tough, but the questions were ‘most difficult’ in DSE history
- Teachers react after pupils turn their anger at too tough exam on former US first lady
Use of extracts from Michelle Obama’s memoir in the English reading paper of this year’s university entrance exams should not have been a surprise for candidates, Hong Kong teachers and tutors said after scores of pupils who found the test too tough turned their anger on the former US first lady.
Scores of pupils flocked to Obama’s Instagram account to show their frustration since the exam last Friday after excerpts on how her mother and great-aunt shaped her from her bestseller Becoming were used for the reading comprehension part of the exam.
Some said it would be Obama’s fault if they did not get a good mark for the test.
They suggested candidates should read across different subjects and genres to ensure they had mastered the subject.
But one teacher said the reaction of pupils was “extremely shameful” and insisted exam candidates should have been aware that any type of English texts could appear in the reading paper.
“I don’t see how students can find it shocking for such a popular book to appear in the exam. They should have worked on their reading skills before sitting for the English exam and mastered the subject through exploring different cultures,” Lily*, an English teacher from a secondary school, said.
There are no compulsory reading list for pupils to familiarise themselves with for the reading part of the paper.
There is also no rule of thumb for how the reading passages were selected and that they could be drawn from any source, including news articles, reputable websites or extracts from books.
She emphasised that the DSE English examination’s goal was to test the ability of pupils to understand and interpret the purpose and meaning of a broad range of texts, not just what they had studied in textbooks.
“English is a vibrant, fluid language and the DSE exams reflect that,” she said.
Becoming, published in 2018, was the biggest-selling book published in the United States that year and more than 17 million copies were sold worldwide.
The book was available in 24 languages and also adapted into an Emmy-nominated Netflix documentary.
Lily said each year’s DSE English paper was decided on by the subject committee.
“The members usually comprise a representative from the Education Bureau, English teachers from various secondary schools and at least one member of teaching staff with a doctoral degree in the subject,” she explained.
Alan Chan, an English tutor at the private King’s Glory Education Centre, said a memoir by Clive James, an Australian writer, TV personality and critic, was featured in 2019’s English reading paper.
“The questions that year were not easy either, but I didn’t hear students complaining,” he said.
He added he believed the outrage expressed this year was because Obama was an easy target for pupils.
“Michelle Obama is a very famous person and they can have a channel to vent their anger and dissatisfaction about the DSE exams,” Chan said.
Lily admitted that each paragraph of the Obama extract was difficult for pupils to comprehend if they were not familiar with the slang and language used.
“Students really had to exercise their inference skills this year to interpret the passage,” she said.
Chan added that, rather than blaming the text for being difficult, it was the questions that made pupils stumble.
“I don’t think the passage is the most challenging one, but the questions were the most challenging in DSE history because there are so many inference questions and so many questions that need students to have a deep understanding of the passage of the contents and then write it in their own way,” he said.
Tom*, another secondary teacher, said this year’s paper would have been an advantage for pupils who had developed English reading habits, especially those at schools which offered English literature elective courses.
“They are used to reading these genres so they would have the ability to interpret, understand and answer open-ended questions,” he said.
Chan added that any pupils who had read Obama’s book might have an advantage over those who had not, but insisted it would not have given them a major edge.
“When it comes to answering questions, they also need exam skills and some English knowledge,” he said.
Tom said he often gave his students reading work from The New York Times or the South China Morning Post, but they barely had enough time to finish all the material.
“As such, students’ reading ability is genuinely based on their self-discipline or motivation,” he said.
Tom said teachers usually prepared a variety of texts designed to expose pupils to as many different genres as possible, but added the Obama excerpt was not typical of reading materials used.
Chan said pupils should read more in English to avoid problems with exams in the future.
“They can watch some documentaries from Netflix or Disney+ with English subtitles. They can mute the sound and read just the subtitles.”

Harris Responds to Trump’s Comments About Her Identity: ‘Divisiveness and Disrespect’
The vice president’s calibrated rebuttal was perhaps an early indication of how she will respond to racist and crude attacks from Donald Trump.

Reporting from Houston
- July 31, 2024
Vice President Kamala Harris carefully hit back at former President Donald J. Trump after he questioned the legitimacy of her identity as a Black woman, saying on Wednesday that he had put on the “same old show” of “divisiveness and disrespect.”
“The American people deserve better,” Ms. Harris said at a convention of Sigma Gamma Rho, one of the nation’s most prominent Black sororities. “The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth, a leader who does not respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts. We deserve a leader who understands that our differences do not divide us — they are an essential source of our strength.”
But she did not directly quote or refer to Mr. Trump’s comments earlier on Wednesday in Chicago, where he had asked of Ms. Harris: “Is she Indian or is she Black?” He had also falsely claimed that Ms. Harris used to identify as Indian and then “all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she became a Black person.”
The vice president is of Jamaican and Indian heritage, and attended Howard University, a historically Black university.
Ms. Harris’s precisely calibrated rebuttal was perhaps an early indication of how she will respond to crude and racist attacks from Mr. Trump. Former President Barack Obama largely ignored Republicans, led by Mr. Trump, who falsely accused him of being born in Kenya.
Her remarks on Wednesday came after she has sought to place her campaign on the continuum of racial progress in America, referring to it in the same breath as abolitionists and civil rights activists.

Michelle Obama's writings are stylistically comparable to the examination texts in 2019 and 2020, which had a distinct personal voice and a good deal of sarcasm, etc. Since the writer is recounting her own childhood experiences, the language is naturally more flowery than an article's.
