Prince movie review: Sivakarthikeyan’s absurd comedy drama works in parts

Prince movie review: director anudeep’s brand of comedy is unique and might not be for everyone..

prince tamil movie review in tamil

I should perhaps put a disclaimer that I haven’t seen Jathi Ratnalu , and so I found the comedy of director Anudeep pretty unique and largely silly in Tamil. Mind you, you don’t end up laughing at the film. The absurdity of it all is very much intended. Many stretches are laugh riots – especially the one around the bottle gourd. The heroine Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka) asks the hero Anbu (Sivakarthikeyan) to take her to a good vegetable shop. They end up in a neighborhood store run by a couple. The wife proudly claims that she married the guy because he is well-versed in English. Yet, when Jessica asks for a bottle gourd, he doesn’t know what that vegetable is supposed to be. Neither does our hero. Now, the whole sequence is about two guys trying to save their faces in front of their loved ones. The exchanges are mindless, ludicrous, and silly… but they are outrageously funny. However, we don’t get those bits a lot in Prince, which is otherwise a mediocre fare.

The brain of Anudeep should be an exciting place. It is hard to articulate his sense of comedy, and harder to come up with things like how Anbu’s voiceover introduces his father Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj): “ Ivar thaan enga appa. Enna vida moothavaru (This is my dad. He is older than me).” I was caught off guard. I had to turn right and left to make sure that what I heard was right. A few more minutes into the film, I understood the brand of comedy. There’s nothing funny about the lines, the humour stems from how incongruous and absurd they are with the situation. How do you explain this emotional dialogue from Anbu towards the end of the film that tries to soothe his estranged dad: “ Pechu pottila jeichapa kuda, Appanu naan un pera thaanae sonane (When I won in speech competition, I proudly called you as my father).” What’s funny in stating the obvious, you might ask. Still, it’s hard to figure out why you are laughing at it. The moment you try to explain Anudeep’s sense of humour, you will end up missing the point. It’s neither sophisticated nor pedestrian… I would like to call it ‘ingeniously silly’.

prince tamil movie review in tamil

All said and done, Prince as a film fails to keep you engrossed. It is so obvious that the hilarious stretches are connected by a generic thread about a love story between a Tamil guy and a Brit girl. Anbu’s father Ulaganathan is an anti-casteist villain. Son of a slain freedom fighter, he takes pride in denouncing caste, creed and religion, but when his daughter marries someone in the family, he is shamed. So, he warns Anbu that he should never marry anyone from the same caste. Anbu, a social science teacher, exceeds his father’s expectations by falling in love with his colleague Jessica, an English teacher. Not just caste, he transcends race, ethnicity, country, etc with his love. So, the conflict arises when Ulaganathan realises that Jessica is British. He doesn’t want someone from the country that enslaved Indians for two hundred years and who also killed his father.

However, ‘conflict’ is a strong word for a film that doesn’t take itself seriously even for a nanosecond. There’s only a semblance of a story that doesn’t move forward at all. You keep waiting for the next good stretch. If you were to watch the film on OTT, you would have skipped the customary bridges that connect the good stretches, and you would still not miss anything. Another redeeming factor of Prince is Sivakarthikeyan. Just his affable presence sets a good mood, and one should give it to him for experimenting with this unique humour. Perhaps, this is the most experimental movie in his career yet. When the film ended with the end card ‘Subam’, an obsolete practice in Tamil cinema, I realised that I won’t remember Prince for a long time. But that doesn’t seem to be the intention. The point is to make you laugh for those few stretches, and maybe it’s a win… after all.

Prince movie review: Sivakarthikeyan's charm makes this silly, quirky comedy fun

Prince movie review: sivakarthikeyan's charm and his chemistry with sathyaraj elevate this quirky but silly comedy to a fun watch..

Sivakarthikeyan ’s Prince could be described as an experimental comedy film. I use the word experimental because it isn’t wholesomely entertaining as some of his other films but at the same time it works as a quirky attempt at bringing forth a different style of humour. You could even call it silly humour, which worked beautifully in Anudeep’s last film, Jathi Ratnalu. In Prince, too, it works to a large extent and that’s what makes the comedy refreshing, if not wildly entertaining. The film works when you don’t take it seriously. Also read: Don review: Sivakarthikeyan’s film is a predictable but likeable coming-of-age drama

Prince is a romantic comedy that stars Sivakarthikeyan and Maria Riaboshapka.

The plot is simple. It’s about a Tamil boy (Sivakarthikeyan plays Anbu) from a fictional village near Pondicherry falling in love with a British girl (Maria plays Jessica). Sathyaraj plays Anbu’s father (Ulaganathan) and he’s a staunch anti-casteist, who wants his son to marry outside their caste. When Anbu, a social science teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (British), an English teacher, he hopes that his father would be proud of him to fall in love with someone from a different country altogether. Instead of extending his support for their love, Ulaganathan opposes the idea because his father was killed by the British during the independence struggle. Therefore, he doesn’t want someone from that country in his family.

The film relies a lot on quirky one-liners and wordplay. Anudeep’s style of comedy is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you loved what he did with Jathi Ratnalu, Prince won’t disappoint you. Even though the film is not consistently as funny as Jathi Ratnalu, the jokes do work wherever they’re used.

Nobody else but Sivakarthikeyan could’ve made Prince work to this extent. He holds the film together with his charming screen presence and his knack of doing comedy is unmatchable. Sathyaraj is equally good as the father and complements Sivakarthikeyan well in so many scenes. The chemistry between them really comes alive on the screen and it’s a treat to watch.

Prince, as the promos promised, ends up as a harmless romantic comedy. The comedy stretches work and generate ample laughs to keep you invested. The dull stretches do serve as a roadblock in an otherwise breezy story that touches upon the theme of fake nationalism.

PRINCE MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Prince is a romantic comedy film written and directed by Anudeep KV and produced by Suniel Narang, Suresh Babu and Puskur Ram Mohan Rao under the banner Suresh Productions. The film has Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj and Maria Riaboshapka in the lead roles while Premgi Amaren, Sathish Krishnan, Prankster Rahul, Bhaarath and others play supporting roles. The film has music by Thaman and cinematography by Manoj Paramahansa.

Anbu (played by Sivakarthikeyan) is a social science teacher for a mid-grade school in Pondicherry and falls in love with Jessica (Maria Riaboshapka), an english teacher but the entire village is against their love because she's from a British origin. On the other side, Premgi plays the role of a cunning real estate person who grabs the land of people. What does this have to do with Anbu's romance and how Anbu deals with this problem and the conservative villagers form the rest of the plot.

The biggest positive of the film is Sivakarthikeyan's terrific expressions and his dance has also improved tremendously. His natural timing and chemistry with co-actors elevates the comedy scenes really well. Maria Ryaboshapka does what is expected of her. Among the supporting cast, Sathyaraj holds every scene he appears in with great control.

It is well known from his previous films that director Anudeep KV can handle humour extremely well and has a niche sense of comedy. His characters are usually innocent and realise the gravity of the situation very late. This innocence is where the comedy is derived from, and the same is the case with Prince as well.

Anudeep's sense of humour is niche. But a set of audience might not relate to this brand of comedy. At the same time, the nature of jokes and the plot are predictable. The initial school portion and the climax comedies work better. For instance, one of the killer lines is a voice over introducing Sathyaraj. The voice over goes, "Ivaru dhan enga appa, vayasula moothavaru" (meaning - He's my father, he's older than me).

However the issue with Prince is that the film leaves the story hanging just to get that extra laugh or clap. Till the interval, the film either moves at superfast pace or lags heavily. This means the scenes progress really fast and then stagnate for the next few minutes, but saved by consistent one-liner comedies that keep you entertained.

Overall, the writing of the film could have been better, which would have made the actors performances even better. The characters needed better sketching, but the clean nature of content will certainly entertain the family audiences and could also end up as a perfect Diwali treat.

‘Prince’ movie review: Where’s the laugh riot that Sivakarthikeyan promised?

‘prince’, starring sivakarthikeyan, has a few funny stretches and some great dance moves but nothing more.

Updated - November 01, 2022 04:47 pm IST

Published - October 21, 2022 03:04 pm IST

Srinivasa Ramanujam

A still from ‘Prince’

A British girl is sitting inside a Tamil household, and speaking with who could possibly be her future father-in-law. The warm, Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj), is telling her (Jessica, played by Maria Riaboshapka) that he knows everything and that she could ask him any doubts, especially if it has to do with the Tamil language.

At that exact moment, Anbu's ( Sivakarthikeyan ) phone rings. The ringtone? 'Gumuru Tupuru', from Sivakarthikeyan's earlier hit, Namma Veetu Pillai . Jessica asks Ulaganathan what that means, and...

Prince is a collection of such 'jokes'. Strike that. It has two or three funny lines - most of which have anyway been packaged in the trailer - but the irreverent laugh riot that the makers promised in the promotional interviews seems to have gone missing.

Anbu is based out of a village near Pondicherry but the place isn't real; it's a fictional place where everyone is simple and irreverent. There's a school student who writes a love letter based on a subtitle text he once saw. There's a vegetable vendor who proudly says he knows what bottle gourd is, but he doesn't. And then, there's our protagonist, who actually writes and signs a letter promising his father that he would marry only out of his caste. All these are good ideas on paper, but when it translates to actual scenes on screen, the silly irreverence doesn't hit you as well as it should.

Anudeep KV, who earlier gave us the Telugu hit Jathi Ratnalu , does have a different sense of humour when writing. The jokes aren't meant to pull someone's leg, as is usually the case. They are just simple, silly lines, and mostly out of context, which is supposed to be its USP. But his Prince comes across as just a collection of jokes that belong to a comedy serial.

The core storyline revolves around Anbu’s love for Jessica, but there’s no emotional investment there. The love scenes hardly work; they dangerously veer into humour territory. Maria Riaboshapka’s scenes are passable, and her dance moves in a song show promise, but there’s no meat in the romantic track. Sathyaraj has a commanding presence, as usual, but Premgi Amaren hardly makes an impression. As for Sivakarthikeyan, coming off fresh from the success of Doctor and Don, this is a film he could have done in his sleep. It doesn’t tap into any of his newfound confidence or skills, and rather, is content with highlighting his standard stock of funny expressions and counter dialogues.

What it does explore, though, is his dance skills, which have indeed come a long way since his initial days in the film industry. Watch his feet dart swiftly in the catchy ‘Jessica’ song (music by Thaman), or the fast moves in the ‘Bimbilikki Pilapi’ track. Now, what on earth is ‘Bimbilikki Pilapi’? That’s probably for Prince 2 , a film we hope will never get made.

Prince Movie Review (2022)

Anudeep kv's 'prince', with sivakarthikeyan and maria ryaboshapka, applies the 'jathi ratnalu' formula to a love story and falls flat.

Prince Movie Review in English

Prince Movie Cast & Crew

Anudeep KV's USP is silliness. In Jathi Ratnalu , he roped in three actors: Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna. And he used these actors as punching bags for his brand of brilliantly nonsensical one-liners. I took some time to warm up to the film, but once I got on its wavelength, it became a blast. Anudeep treats silly situations in a silly way. He also treats serious situations in a silly way. Even when we think we are in for major melodrama, he keeps undercutting the mood with humour. He goes for the same approach in Prince , but this time, it doesn't work. Why? The first reason may be Sivakarthikeyan. This is right up the actor's zone and he is excellent, but he is also too big a star. This film may have worked for him before Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga , but today, after his rapid ascent to the top, we expect something a little… substantial, something big-screen worthy.

That, sadly, happens only during the songs by Thaman, which are grandly staged. Otherwise, the film is an oddly small, TV-level affair. (Again, with a smaller actor at the centre, it might not have seemed so small.) And we come to the second reason Prince doesn't work. In Jathi Ratnalu , Anudeep's anything-goes sensibility was a perfect fit for an anything-goes story. Here, the story is actually about something – or many things. It's about the irrelevance of caste and borders between countries. It's about the importance of humanity, which is possibly why the Sivakarthikeyan character is named Anbu. It's about how the British still own Indian soil – or land. And it's about Anbu falling for a Brit named Jessica, and played by Maria Ryaboshapka. This romance is opposed by Anbu's father (Sathyaraj) because of, well, what the Brits did on Indian soil.

What surprised me – and not in a good way – was the earnestness with which Anudeep approaches these issues and messages. In a film with this tonality, who wants to hear (from Jessica) that the British left behind a legacy of good things, too? Who wants a borderline-serious subplot with Premgi Amaren as a shady real-estate dealer? Why inflate the self-importance of a meant-to-be-silly film with key events taking place on January 26 and August 15? Why get all melodramatic with the Sathyaraj character in the second half? Yes, a lot of this is intercut with silly lines – in the spirit of the overall film – but this technique doesn't always work.

The stretch with guest star Soori is a bomb. A bit woven around Charlie Chaplin is a bomb. A potential fight scene in a sports bar is a bomb. The flashback with Jessica's grandmother is a serious bomb. The strange characterisation of her father is a bomb. Jessica's "boy bestie" gag is a bomb. At one point, she asks Anbu why he loves her. Good question. The script is too lazy to think up an answer.

Prince is a chain link of missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Even the slapstick fight is not as slapsticky as it should be. I loved the sudden appearance of a cactus plant, but it doesn't do anything as crazy as it sounds. What's not bad? There's a not-bad sequence with Anandraj as a cop. There's a Monty Python-esque stretch (or Goundamani-Senthil-esque strech) about a vegetable. And like in Jathi Ratnalu , the hero gets to make a big, rousing speech that's filled with funny, nonsensical touches. This portion is the only one where the issues and the silliness come together organically, and the tricky mix is beautifully handled by the writing. And I loved the hero-entry scene. You think it's going to be one thing. It cleverly becomes something else – and you can't imagine anyone but Sivakarthikeyan pulling this off. But Prince is proof that likeability on screen is not enough to make a movie.

Prince Movie Review: A reasonably effective mindless comedy

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

Remember Mirchi Shiva's intro scene in Thamizh Padam 2 where he goes on a monologue about many things random? Did it make you laugh? Or did it make you roll your eyes? If it worked for you, you are in for a ride with Prince , which is a marathon of such humour. Is it unfair to judge a film based on the efficiency of one element? Perhaps not, considering this is the main takeaway of this film.

Director: Anudeep KV Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Maria Riaboshapka, Sathyaraj

The humour won't come across as a shocker to those who have watched Anudeep's sophomore feature, Jathi Ratnalu . Be it the naivete in romance, the over-enthusiastic body language, or even the floral print shirts, it is hard not to notice similarities between Sivakarthikeyan's Anbu and Naveen Polisehetty's Jogipet Srikanth.

The plot of Prince is generic and predictable. A Tamil boy from a family of British haters falls in love with a... Britisher! And naturally, a series of crazy events prevent them from getting together. Another film with a story like this--and an uninspiring screenplay--might have sunk without trace, but he tremendous focus on nonsensical humour keeps Prince afloat.

The non-stop jokes, however, don't always land as intended. A number of attempts do fall flat but not so much that the good parts get affected. When Sathyaraj's wife anxiously asks him, "Ungalukku enna dhaan venum?" , he replies, "Nee inga irundhu ponum!" Whenever the film shifts to this rhyme zone, the jokes fail. But a few minutes into the film, I became kinder, as the outlandish portions are brilliant. A case in point is the whole sequence involving a bottle gourd.

For 'mokkai' comedy to work, listeners must get used to context and the identity of the person cracking the jokes. This is why inside jokes among friends work, and why it feels absurd for outsiders. It also helps when celebrated stars (Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj) are cast humour. I really doubt if Prince would have been as efficient if not for these two actors. But sadly, the same can't be said about the rest. Even though Maria gets the lip-sync game almost right, her performance feels right out of a highschool drama. Premgi Amaren, in a non-Venkat Prabhu film, once again doesn't work.

As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally under-written screenplay and lacklustre staging. But the flaws become extremely glaring when the film focusses, for instance, on the romance. The story is stagnant, and interesting angles--like Jessica (Maria) asking Anbu why he falls for her--are not explored well.

Anudeep cleverly saves the best humour for the last act. The extended farewell speech of Anbu revives the film from a painful second act. Without giving away much, this last speech of Prince is absurdity in its most tasteful form.

The title Prince doesn't bear much relevance to the actual film, except as a tribute to its star actor. Had Anudeep stuck to just mindless fun, without getting distracted by angles like the bland romance, this Prince might have won everyone's heart.

The movie is the Telugu debut of Sivakarthikeyan and is made bilingual. SK, who was scoring back-to-back Rs 100 Crore hits is testing his luck with a direct Telugu film.

The story of Prince is about a teacher, played by Sivakarthikeyan, who falls in love with a British woman who works as an English teacher in the same school. The fun and frolic that ensues as the hero tries to woo the woman and the challenges they face to finally be married form the Prince.

According to the Overseas Censor Board member and self-proclaimed critic Umair Sandhu, the movie has nothing specific and is said to be a bottle of old wine in a new bottle. Taking to his Twitter, he wrote, "Old wine in a new bottle = #Prince 🙄" (sic). He further wrote, "Just watched Prince Tamil Film and it is just boring."

Prince Review: A Low Risk, Low Rewards Comedy With Moments Of Inspired ‘Mokkai’

Prince Review: A Low Risk, Low Rewards Comedy With Moments Of Inspired ‘Mokkai’

Director: Anudeep KV

Cast: Sivakarthikeyan , Maria Ryaboshapka, Sathyaraj

It might be a long shot to call Anudeep KV’s Jathi Ratnalu a comedy classic, but it had several inventive stretches where it married clever comic writing with a bucketload of pristine randomness. Which other word can you use to describe a film made with so much conviction that they believed they could pull off a five-minute-long gag where its protagonists discuss nothing else apart from the first man in their village to wear a “jeans pant”? Parts of Sivakarthikeyan’s Prince borrows generously from the same part of Anudeep’s brain that seeks poetry in the inane. Get a load of a similar stretch in Prince in which an entire sketch revolves around the Tamil word for bottle gourd. You know where they’re going with this idea, but Anudeep stretches this so far that it’s almost bizarre how sure he is of it.

It’s this sort of manic conviction that makes Prince tolerable, even when nothing’s going for it. Its entire screenplay could fit in the back of a chewing gum wrapper and it’s never really a screenplay as much as it’s an excuse to cue in the next comedic sketch. You might think this is hyperbolic, but trust me when I tell you that its biggest conflict arrives with a central character mistaking Cambridge for a city in France. It’s the kind of film that never takes itself seriously and in its subservience to that philosophy, it makes you feel like a fool for expecting coherence, finish or sense.

Sense, for instance, is so far removed from the world of Prince that the combined IQ of all the main characters is still in the low single digit. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing. Our defences are always down and you can consistently catch yourself laughing for one liners and setups that are embarrassingly silly. Which is why it feels so organic when you finally have a Tamil movie patriarch (an excellent Sathyaraj) who is actually heartbroken when his daughter elopes with someone from the same caste.

This is also in line with Prince 's central message, which prioritises humanity over caste, religion or regional boundaries. But who are we kidding with this message when the film uses it as an excuse to pack in as many jokes about all nationalities as it can? So when the film’s big climactic speech is being made to advocate a world without borders, the makers can also slip in a joke about women describing the beauty of the borders of their respective sarees. All of this is truly absurd and can only be thought off by a person for whom laughter is both the journey and destination.

prince tamil movie review in tamil

This also means that you’re simultaneously cherry picking at what jokes land and what don’t. Some, like a longish stretch involving Soori, is a glorious mess that comes from a very calculative approach for a gloriously random film. Another longish sketch involving Anbu (Sivakarthikeyan) and his three buddies fall flat when they’re trying to force the jokes rather than let it land it peace. You find the same kind of annoying overthinking in the way the songs have been placed as well. Not only do these dance numbers stick out when you’re simply waiting for the next big joke, but you can also sense how they’re being pushed into the film because it kinda, sorta has become a big selling point for its hero.

prince tamil movie review in tamil

But even this kind of strategy isn’t something you can blame the hero for in other portions. Sivakarthikeyan stars in perhaps his least heroic film after hitting superstardom, and he’s able to maintain the film’s funny-or-die attitude even through awkward romantic stretches and the slightly less awkward emotional scenes. Adding that he also doesn’t need a sidekick to keep the jokes flowing, you can also see how he’s able to distract us from the severe ineptitude of the foreign actors (the Tamil they speak is insufferable). With its clunky making and questionable production values, there’s nothing in terms of cinematic quality in Prince . Despite this sketch comedy-like polish and the many jokes that go nowhere, Prince is still very watchable. But if you’ve got a place in your heart for some old fashioned "mokkai", you’re likely to leave without worrying too much about how much your standards have fallen.

A clean absurd comedy that struggles with the consistency of laughs.

Prince isnt as funny or entertaining as it should have been. But a couple of stretches bring the roof down. It is a clean absurd comedy with an important message at its core. I really wish that a lot more jokes worked but this is a simple film that deserves respect for its intentions. (more)

This comedy falls flat despite quirky premise

There are a few stretches that offer a glimpse at the promise this subject might have presented to the makers. Like a scene involving bottle gourd, a go-for-broke pj-filled scene at a police station and the climax. But in between such moments of inspired silliness is not inanity but dead air. (more)

Prince review: Sivakarthikeyan’s attempt at romantic comedy is a cringe-fest

Sivakarthikeyan and Maria Ryaboshapka in Tamil movie Prince

Prince has lapses in logic that are larger than some of the potholes peppering Chennai streets right now, post the corporation’s work on the storm water drains. Actually, if you find anything that remotely makes sense in the film, it is most likely accidental. In a school somewhere in Puducherry, Anbu (Sivakarthikeyan) and Jessica (Maria Ryaboshapka) teach history and English, respectively. Jessica is British and lives in Puducherry’s French Colony. Anbu is the grandson of a Tamil freedom fighter or so his father Ulaganathan, played by a Sathyaraj leaning hard into his comedic chops, keeps telling anyone who will listen.

When Jessica and Anbu fall in love, Ulaganathan, portrayed so far as a ‘progressive’ father, has a meltdown. Because Jessica is British and not French as he’d assumed. Ulaganathan is okay with the French, “Karl Marx veetulaiye ponnu edhutha maadhiri” (It’s like we found a bride from Karl Marx’s own household). Marx was born in Prussia’s Trier (present-day Germany), but facts be damned.

Ulaganathan rails at his son about British colonisation in a sequence that you struggle to believe is not parody. Prince is set in and around Puducherry town — you know, that former French colony? The French colonisers were hardly less guilty of brutality. But, like I said, history, facts, logic none of that matter to the film. Not even to the protagonist Anbu, who you will recall teaches history. Unfortunately, Prince ’s entire premise revolves around Ulaganathan’s very specific dislike of only the British. Granted they stayed the longest of all the European colonisers, but for a film that takes pains to set up its story in Puducherry, the premise leaves you wondering at the filmmaker’s blissful lack of irony.

This is Telugu director Anudeep KV’s first foray into Kollywood. His and SK’s, as Sivakarthikeyan is popularly known, attempt at romantic comedy leaves you feeling second-hand embarrassment for them at the cringeworthy romance. The comedy works best, and only rarely so, when SK relies on self-deprecating humour and in turning Tamil cinema formula moments on their head. The Big Fight in Prince makes fun of the ‘mass’ sequences the industry’s heroes usually get. The slapstick comedy scene with a hilariously outnumbered SK offers overdue bursts of laughter. Similarly, the grand monologues that stars tend to give at the end of the film has a particularly SKesque delivery that recalls his early days as a stand-up comedian rather than a conventional Kollywood hero.

Also, the little quips about SK’s capabilities as a lyricist, such as the nonsense lines he wrote for ‘Arabic Kuthu’ from Beast , remind you that the actor is comfortable making fun of himself.

There’s not much else that can be said in favour of Prince . Sathyaraj’s screen presence, particularly in what is supposed to be a quirky role, falls flat in utter disservice to the talented actor. Though his father-son pairing works well with SK and they are able to play off each other’s comic timing, the poorly written script undoes this collaboration. Even cameos by Anand Babu and Soori barely contribute to the tone or comedy in the film.

Maria’s painfully exaggerated accent (whether her own or dubbed, it’s hard to tell) when speaking Tamil and her objectification as the aspirational partner in an industry obsessed with light-skinned women more or less summarises her part in the film. Like most Kollywood heroines, Jessica is a wide-eyed, two-dimensional female lead, with the only difference being that she is white. She delivers on the grating cutesiness expected of her. It’s difficult beyond this to credit or fault the acting of someone playing such a poorly written character. The actor also looks completely ill-at-ease in the kind of dance moves demanded of heroines in Indian cinema.

Music director Thaman’s songs, with the majority of the lyrics penned by SK, certainly don’t contribute much towards making anyone want to break out into dance. Rather, tracks like ‘Bimbilikki Pilapi’, ‘Jessica’ and ‘Who am I’ have you wistfully eyeing the nearest exit.

SK and Anudeep, in this unappealing mess of a film, make passing attempts to comment on the ideas of patriotism vs being branded anti-national. But so shallow is the effort, with care taken only to ensure no offence is given to the Hindu-right who actually throw those words around, the commentary has zero social impact.
