Positive Messages

Though justice is said to be "worth fighting for," the world is so bleak and full of horror that this doesn't seem believable.

Positive Role Models

Though Seven aims to show that all people are capable of great sin, Detective Somerset is level-headed, wise, and kind.

Parents need to know that this film contains graphic depictions of the aftermath of grisly murders involving the seven deadly sins. While none of this takes place on-screen, the vivid descriptions prove to be nearly as chilling. For example, an obese man is forced to eat until his stomach bursts. A man is forced to kill a prostitute by stabbing her reproductive organs with an 8-inch knife. A beauty queen's face is cut off. A lawyer must cut out his own stomach. A police officer's pregnant wife is beheaded. In the end, the line between good and evil is blurred, with evil more or less coming out on top. "What's in the box?!"

Become vengeance, david, become wrath., what's the story.

SEVEN combines horror and film noir genres, with overconfident rookie David Mills ( Brad Pitt ) as the doomed detective of the noir tradition, and book veteran William Somerset ( Morgan Freeman ) as the desexualized, pedantic survivor familiar to slasher movie fans. The story follows the archetypal pair as they wind their way through a dark world of urban violence in search of a serial killer ( Kevin Spacey ). Mills and Somerset conclude that each murder corresponds to one of the seven deadly sins from the Bible, and that the killer is trying to preach his message of religious morality through his murders and the press they receive. Even after being willfully apprehended, the killer has one final trick up his sleeve -- a horrific gesture designed to goad Mills into crossing the line between lawful justice and sinful vengeance.

Is It Any Good?

Dark, disturbing and occasionally gory, Seven is a psychological thriller that, along with Chinatown , is among the bleakest films in mainstream cinema history.

The murders are not shown on screen, but the film has a morbid fascination with the pain inflicted on the victims. And it depicts a dark universe, where the lines between good and evil are blurred. There's no question that it aims to be more philosophical than other detective/horror films (namely The Silence of the Lambs ). Attempts at deeper meaning might be pretentious or profound, depending on how serious you can take Brad Pitt as an actor.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about horror movies. How is this movie different than a slasher film? What makes it disturbing? Is it any less chilling because the violence is not shown on screen?

Promising concept and was thrilling when it started! But the second half was written really bad and it felt like they wanted to just justify everything forcibly! The actresses were good, the main actor Havish did not act well! I wouldn't call it a wasted attempt, but the screenplay could have been tighter and believable! 👍👎⭐⭐

This thriller has a great content and the script itself has many gripping and intresting moments to open twists. All the actresses scored their best but Regina's performance was one of the highlight. The second half was laggy and the screenplay could be written in a more intresting way. Good script and good attempt!!!

Seven is a disappointing thriller. It has a good start but lost in building it up through the middle to end. A missed opportunity that doesn't deserve a watch. Skip it.

Now this is a thriller that's pretty engaging for at least the first half. Woman after woman claim to be married to a guy & accuse him of cheating. Rahman as the investigating cop & the audience are both in a frenzy. However everything falls like a house of cards with the flashback and the subsequent reveal.

Film: Seven Cast: Havish, Regina Cassandra, Nandita Swetha, Anisha Ambrose, Trida Choudary, Poojitha Ponnada, Aditi Arya, Rehman, Sunkara Lakshmi and others Dialogues: G R Maharshi Music : Chaitan Bharadwaj Editing: Praveen K L Art: Gandhi Stunts: Venkat, Magesh  Story, screenplay and producer: Ramesh Varma Cinematography and Direction: Nizar Shafi Release Date: June 5, 2019

What’s it about?

Ramya (Nandita Swetha) and Jenny (Anisha Ambrose) come to police station to report the missing of their husbands and it turns out that both their husbands is the same person Karthik (Havish). Intrigued by their case, a police officer (Rehman) investigates the case but soon finds a similar case was reported by another girl (Aditi Arya) in Chennai. Finally, they nab Karthik and put him in jail and on the same day Priya (Trida Chowdary) files missing case of her husband Karthik. Who actually is Karthik and what is this story? How is he linked to another incident that happened in 1980’s involving Saraswathi (Regina)? This is the mystery of this thriller.

‘Seven’ is based on the script written by Ramesh Varma, who directed several flops like ‘Oka Oorilo’, ‘Abbayitho Ammayi’ and ‘Veera’. On paper, this mystery seems interesting but on screen it has looked boring from the beginning. An ACP officer taking too much interest in the report of two girls reporting their husband missing from two days itself is silly. Moreover, all news channels in the city telecast this missing case of a random guy as if it is a national issue. And police paste pamphlets on the walls through out the city of this guy who is missing for two days! Added to this silliness, a constable who seems to have no other work in the world updates about this case minute to minute to the ACP and also finds that a deaf and dumb girl in Chennai is also ‘cheated’ by Karthik. Kya Re! Everything happens as per writer’s convenience! In the first half, we get to see two romantic threads with each girl who reported their husbands and a small romantic episode involving the Chennai girl. Post-interval, the movie focuses on the three other girls. The basic mystery of this movie is revealed. And what is that? The story goes back to 1980’s and a flashback drama involving Regina. This is highly implausible flashback.

The last 20 minutes are fairly better and watchable compared to the utter boring first half. But the movie’s basic mystery is too cinematic and silly.

The film has six actresses but it is Regina who shines in the film. ‘Seven’ basically is all about Regina’s character and she has done the role convincingly. Besides Regina, only Trida Chowdary makes some impression. Sunkara Lakshmi, the older version of Regina, needs appreciation for her sincere portrayal. Havish is just okay. Rehman plays the typical Hollywood-ish cop role.

None of the songs composed by Chaitan Bharadwaj of ‘RX 100’ fame gets registered. Cinematography is decent but the cinematographer Nizar Shafi’s direction is not competent.

Bottom-line: The only good part of ‘Seven’ is Regina’s performance and the final sequences. The rest is bore and bad.

Seven Review: Ludicrous Thriller

Seven Review: Ludicrous Thriller

Movie: Seven Rating: 1.5/5 Banner: Kiran Studios Cast: Havish, Regina Cassandra, Nandita Swetha, Anisha Ambrose, Trida Choudary, Poojitha Ponnada, Aditi Arya, Rehman and others Dialogues: G R Maharshi Music: Chaitan Bharadwaj Editing: Praveen K L  Story, screenplay and producer: Ramesh Varma Cinematography and Direction: Nizar Shafi Release Date: June 5, 2019

'Seven' has been in the news as six glamorous heroines paired up with Havish. Why did these six heroines agree to do lip-locks with Havish and has the film justified its buzz?

Let’s find out.

Story: An ACP officer (Rehman) in Hyderabad finds intriguing the stories narrated by two women Ramya (Nandita Swetha) and Jenny (Anisha Ambrose) who come to his police station to report their missing husbands.

He concludes that the husbands they are reporting is the same person Karthik (Havish), a software engineer in a MNC.

A mentally retarded old-man makes the case even more complicated by revealing that the guy in the photo is not Karthik but Krishnamurthy who was his classmate in his village in Godavari district. How would Karthik, a young guy, be classmate to this old man?

The mystery deepens with another woman coming to report her husband’s missing who also happens to be Karthik? What is the real mystery?

Artistes’ Performances: Havish got to play two shades of the role that of a young software guy and a person in the 80’s. Surprisingly, Havish is fitted in the role of a rural 80’s guy than the software professional. In both the roles, he is clueless and expressionless.

However, the real star of the movie is Regina Cassandra, who in the role of Saraswathi owns the proceedings in the second half entirely.

As an obsessive woman, Regina has made her portion more interesting and later the old woman who played Regina’s older self has gone overboard.

Rehman as ACP is just okay. Nandita Swetha and Anisha Ambrose appear in the first half with neat roles while Tridha Chowdhary makes her appearance in brief sequences in the second half.

Poojitha Ponnada and Aditi Arya have got roles that are generally played by junior artistes.

Technical Excellence: Nizar Shafi has directed this film as well as filmed it as a cinematographer. He gets marks as cameraman. Music is not appealing. Dialogues are plain. Editing is better in the second half.

Highlights: Regina Cassandra

Drawback: Boring first half Weak direction Unconvincing story Outdated romantic threads

Analysis “Seven” is directed by cinematographer Nizar Shafi but the story and screenplays is written by Ramesh Varma. This is more of Ramesh Varma’s work. The writer has come up with most unbelievable twist for this thriller.

The story’s twist and turns encompassing 1980’s to present day is hard to digest. This is the fatal flaw in this thriller that is less engaging and more boring.

“Seven” gets the proceedings wrong from the first two romantic threads involving Havish- Nandita Swetha and Havish-Anisha Ambrose. Had these two romantic threads been a bit engaging and told in cute way, the movie would have been different.

As these romantic episodes are clichéd, the entire first half never draws into it. The main mystery unfolds in the second half but even those portions look forced, twists look for the sake of twists.

When central point holds on the fact that a woman dreams the hero as her ‘man’, the hero ought to be very handsome personality or should have such ‘dream man’ persona off-screen.

If a woman dreams a personality like Mahesh Babu or Prabhas or Vijay Deverakonda and lives her life imagining them, it is believable.

Here Havish has played this role and his persona doesn’t fit for this aspect. This is why the film’s main point in the second half looks odd and unbelievable.

The film has many actresses but it primarily focuses on Regina’s character which is seemingly based on Farhan Akhtar’s role in Bollywood film “Karthik Calling Karthik”.

To be fair, the film’s final portions are a bit interesting compared to the rest of the mess. Regina makes them riveting with her performance but her thread is stretched beyond point and portions involving Regina’s old self (another actress has played Regina’s old woman character) have turned into laughable fare.

This is another example that Ramesh Varma's poor writing skills and Havish's expression-less action.

All in all, “Seven” has half dozen heroines but it offers little redeemable points but it sure provides head-ache.

Seven Movie Review: So Terrible It’s Awesome

Seven Movie Review: So Terrible It’s Awesome

Language: Tamil

Cast: Rahman, Havish, Regina Cassandra

Director:  Nizar Shafi

Can you still call it a thriller if you're laughing right through a film? I swear the last 30 minutes of Seven is the most fun I've had in the theatre this year. Period. Of course none of that was intentional but does it matter when such a serious film can make you laugh harder than most comedies?

Seven begins well enough when a drenched woman walks into the police station to tell the cops that her husband has gone missing. The cop interrupts the woman midway and completes the story for her stating how another woman had narrated the same exact scenario. After about 10 times another woman walks in and narrates (though she is speech-impaired this time) the same story of her husband going missing.

Naturally, all three husbands are the same person and three women are part of apparently the most elaborately confusing revenge ploy to get the guy into trouble. And suddenly, before the interval, we even get a ghost (only its hand) caressing the aforementioned police officer. We return after the interval to notice that the entire scene was just for shock value…it had no bearing on the script.

Much like most of what happens in the second half. But the real fun only begins with the flashback. Regina Cassandra makes an entry and wait for it…plays a woman that's bat-shit crazy. How crazy? When her father refuses to get her married to the guy she loves, she does to him what Shah Rukh does to Shilpa Shetty in Baazigar . It gets even better after. See how the Regina Cassandra has transformed into a fine old psycho, turning naughty at eighty. She even has a pet grey hound for company. Too many spoilers? I personally give you an assurance that you'll have the time of your life watching Seven . Leave so bad it's good, Seven is so terrible it's awesome.

P.S. There's also a cash reward for anyone who can guess why this film is called Seven .

Young hero Havish’s latest thriller, Seven, has made quite a buzz over the last few days thanks to the steamy video songs and a suspenseful trailer. Five young beauties acting in the film became the USP of Seven. The film has finally hit theaters worldwide this morning. Let’s see how it fared.

Seven’s story begins with an interesting premise, where Ramya (Nandita Swetha), a techie at an IT firm in Hyderabad, files a police complaint after her husband and colleague Karthik (Havish) goes missing. During the investigation, the inspector (Rahman) realizes that the Karthik-Ramya story is eerily similar to that of Jenny’s, who had already complained about her missing husband, Karthik again.

While an investigation for both the cases is on, a hearing and speech impaired girl (Aditi Arya), too, files a similar complaint in Chennai. By now, the inspector is sure that Karthik is the main culprit and that he cheated several women in the name of love and marriage. In a dramatic turn of events, Karthik surrenders himself to the cops and pleads innocence.

Then comes Priya (Tridha), who flies down from Mumbai to file a similar complaint. Now, a series of incidents lead to a flashback that takes place in a village, showcasing a triangle love story between Krishna Murthy (Havish), Saraswathi (Regina) and Bhanu (Pujita). The suspense in the story is all about the ‘Seventh’ person and how Krishna Murthy and Saraswathi’s story is connected to Karthik and all the girls.

Plus Points:

The suspense-filled story and the interesting flashback episodes are the major highlights in Seven. Timely twists and how one girl’s story is linked to the other one keep the audiences engaging at times. Mistaken identity, multiple personality disorder and doppelganger are some of the interesting elements the screenplay touches upon.

Also, Regina’s character and her performance are the surprise package. Havish gets his look right as a geeky techie and Krishna Murthy, the village theater artiste.

Minus Points:

After taking off in an interesting manner, the film begins to lose its steam due to the lackluster romantic scenes in the episodes featuring Karthik-Ramya and Karthik-Jenny. Thrillers usually work well with a taut narration, but that’s not the case with Seven, as a few unwanted songs spoil the experience to a great extent. The first half takes forever to gain pace.

While the actress who played the old lady’s role is good, Regina playing the role would have taken the film to the next level. The lip sync of almost all the actors, including Havish and Regina, leaves a lot to be desired as it also affected their performances.

Technical Aspects:

Although the basic premise of Seven is quite interesting, it’s Ramesh Varma’s partly engaging screenplay that fails to keep the audiences on their toes till the end. There has been no justification to the interval scene and the scenes featuring the man who escapes from the mental hospital. So, they end up only as mere gimmicks to keep the audiences intrigued. The main motive behind the first three girls helping the old woman is unconvincing.

Music composer Chaitan Bharadwaj’s background score is quite impactful and adds to the suspense factor in some key scenes. Cinematography by director Nizar Shafi is quite decent. Especially, Nizar’s lens showcases all the actresses beautifully. The production values are adequate since a major portion of the film is shot in Hyderabad and a village.

Seven has a promising premise and a few intriguing elements that suspense thrillers require. However, it’s the uninspiring narration, especially in the first half, that makes the interest factor fizzle out. The drama and mystery that unfold in the second half may not be everyone’s cup of tea. On the whole, Seven may end up as a below average and underwhelming watch this weekend. Those who enjoy thrillers may give this film a try, but keep your expectations in check.

Seven Review, What’s Behind?

Talented cinematographer Nizar Shafi turned director with Seven. Havish is seen romancing six hot beauties. Does this film restrict for glamour show or contains potential content one would expect from an engaging suspense thriller.

Seven Story Review:

Software employee Ramya (Nandita Swetha) files a police case of her missing husband Karthik (Havish). Inspector (Rahman) finds that, Ramya's story is pretty similar with another case filed by Jenny (Anisha Ambrose) whose missing husband is also Karthik. When the Inspector decides to file cheating case on Karthik, another similar case comes on his table by a speech-impaired woman (Aditi Arya) in Chennai. Even before inspector and his team comes out of third shock, another lady Priya (Tridha) also files similar case on Karthik. Who’s this Karthik? What’s his connection with these four ladies? How triangular love story of Krishna Murthy (Havish), Saraswathi (Regina) and Bhanu (Pujita) leads to many crimes in the past and present?

Seven Artists, Technicians Review:

Telugu audience hardly had films in psychological thriller genre. Rarely when makers had come up with engaging scripts and convincing stories, films in this genre work out because bringing in believability to such scripts require lots of intensity and depth. So writers don’t experiment as risk factor is very high relative to other genres. Proven cameraman Nizar Shafi took the risk for his debut directorial Seven which is written by Ramesh Varma. Idea of searching the mysterious person who’s behind several crimes is an interesting premise. Initial episodes build lots of curiosity to a certain point from where narration turned boring and exhaistive. As the main twist in story unfolds only the second half, it’s a real test for audience where a talented actress showing her acting prowess suffering from psychological disorder. The drama in climax episodes is no less than agony.

Given that, Nizar Shafi basically is a top class cinematographer, camera angles are intriguing. Interval episode is bang on because of his skilled camera work. Chaitan Bharadwaj’s background score complimented the scenes well and added mysterious mood. Production values are splendid for film of its range.

Onto artists, Havish still looks the same from his debut film. He sticks to single expression throughout. Even though his role has lots of scope to perform, Havish failed to utilize. Regina is the real surprise package. Her psychotic acts somehow will not connect to Telugu audience for sure. All the other heroines are restricted to fill glamour part. Rahman did his part quite efficiently.

Seven Review, Rating Analysis:

Suspense thrillers should offer sustained thrills and keep audience hooked, edge of seat as the plot builds towards climax. These nerve breaking moments usually arise when the main character is placed in an alarming situation in breaking the ice. Nonetheless, main reason for Seven to fall on its nose is tasteless writing and bad execution. Nizar Shafi is not a director material as he botched to present that mind-blowing twist intriguin. Graph dips down exponentially in second half where the real point in story is unveiled.

First half begins on interesting note with homicides of Havish’s family members by an anonymous person in 80’s. Story turns further interesting with three different women complaining about missing husbands. Excitement factor here is, they are married to one same person. However, slower-paced narration killed the interest. Interval episode is acceptable but Nizar Shafi's camera work enhance the frightening factor.

Second half too starts on tedious note with Tridha filing similar ‘husband missing’ case on Havish. In no time, story shifts to flashback where triangular love story is narrated in most uneventful manner. After this atrocious period centered on Regina closed off, then the last portions are further distressing.

All in all, Seven is a film without second thoughts you can escape for your own good. Although the film’s plot is intriguing, poor screenplay and worse direction played spoilsport. CJ goes with 1.5 stars and the film is unquestionably going to become a dud at box office.

‘7 (Seven)’ review: An ‘investigative thriller’ that will make you LOL

7' (seven) is what happens when you think you've written a gripping film, and then when it is adapted to the screen, you learn that it can be two different things.

Published - June 05, 2019 04:37 pm IST

Pradeep Kumar

A still from 7(Seven)

Caricature. This word kept popping up in my head as I watched cinematographer Nizar Shafi's debut directorial 7 (Seven) because a lot of what unfolds in the film is caricature...ish. The hero, the cop (Rahman), the women, and even the journalist's character (with a jolna bag, kurta and nerdy glasses) all exist to prove that point.

Where to begin? Well, credit where it is due, Shafi's camera work is bearable for its nearly two hour run time. Nothing exemplary about it, but it isn't jarring to prompt a quick exit from the theatre. The list of "pros" ends there.

The writing is a big letdown. One particular scene, early on in the film, where an old man meets Rahman's ACP Vijay Prakash to share vital info, helped me make my mind up about what was in store. Soon as he drops a bombshell — in other words, plot la twist — he is revealed to be a mental patient, and is dragged out of the cop's room by a doctor and a ward boy all in a matter of five seconds! Shafi, going forward, should consider deputing this responsibility to someone who understands the difference between scripting for a staged drama and a movie.

  • Cast: Havish, Regina Cassandra, Rahman, Nandita Swetha, Anisha Ambrose
  • Director: Nizar Shafi
  • Storyline: A man who is suspected of cheating many women after marrying them, is actually the victim of a cunning plot hatched by a psychotic woman

Then there's the romance. I can stand mokka comedy, but why present it as acceptable commentary between a couple in a relationship? Sample this. Nandita Swetha (as Ramya — a 'why did I do this role?') tells Havish that her family is urging her to get married soon. To which the hero responds, "Ponnunga na konjam freedom kudukkanum!"... and this revolutionary response is greeted with a "romba matured ah pesureenga!"

But what gripped me from start to end of this film was a feeling of 'What am I watching?' (minus the profanity). David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is name-dropped more than twice. Shafi himself appears in a blink-and-you-miss cameo to put forward the point that perhaps the mystery we're "investigating" in this film is something similar to what we saw in Fincher's. But when has a thriller ever been straightforward?

And so it proves, when Regina Cassandra is revealed to be the key. But wait! She is not. It is actually the older version of Regina. Credit to the elderly artiste who played that role, but when she yells at Havish... "Neeya sethuru, illana naa unna konnuduven!", the audience had a hearty laugh. I think it isn't too difficult to draw a parallel between the situations of the watching public and Havish!

Because 7 (Seven) is what happens when you think you've written a gripping film, and then when you adapt it to screen, you learn that it can be two different things.

The Penguin's Prosthetic Makeup Designer Reveals What It Takes To Transform Colin Farrell

The penguin episode 1 recap & ending explained [spoilers], whose hair is in agatha's locket in agatha all along.

2 years after The Batman brought a grungey new take on DC 's Dark Knight and reopened Gotham City for business, HBO's The Penguin is back to remind us all why we loved that movie so much. That episode 1 achieves that while expanding the world and turning the light of the Bat Signal onto Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb without Robert Pattinson's Bat is a hugely impressive start.

The Penguin episode 1 takes up a week after The Batman 's explosive ending , with the Falcone mob family picking up the pieces from the death of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). Farrell's Oz Cobb - shorn of most of his original DC comics surname - returns as an opportunistic and aspirational mobster, intent on exploiting any weaknesses he can. He's joined on The Penguin 's cast by some great newcomers who immediately make a mark in episode 1.

The Penguin

The first episode is all about reaffirmation and reassurance, and in the hands of showrunner Lauren LeFranc and director Craig Zobel, it's a very strong start. On the back of the season opener, there should be few concerns about the trajectory of the rest of the season. And for those inclined to read a full review of the season, you can read ScreenRant's The Penguin review here.

Colin Farrell's Performance Is Outstanding

The penguin is a complete transformation with subtle details.

It's a grand performance, marked by Farrell's stunning transformation - to the point that it's still shocking that it's even him under the make-up - and his exaggerated physical quirks, but Oz Cobb is a triumph of subtlety too. Hidden under layers of prosthetics and padding, Farrell is forced into using his eyes more, and with the slightest of looks, he reveals everything about Oz beneath his surface.

Like The Sopranos , which it's inevitably impossible to overlook as a comparison piece, The Penguin immediately sets out to get under the skin of its tough guy lead. In both Tony Soprano and Oz Cobb, we're presented with ideas about performative machismo and the contradiction of what's behind them . Even without the added depth that will come with later episodes, you immediately get a sense of who Penguin really is.

Everything about this messy, complex character feels intricately planned

There's always a danger with spin-offs dedicated to villains that you peel back too much and destroy their mystique - the Anakin Skywalker effect, let's call it - but The Penguin episode 1 sets its stall out clearly with a reminder of who Oz Cobb is and why he's not DC Comics' familiar Penguin. Oz is a fringe player, granted power because it's "good for business", who wears his insecurities just under his skin.

Thanks to Farrell's excellent performance in the first episode, you're immediately gifted that insight. It's in the way he dresses, how he holds himself around more powerful people , and in the briefest of moments like checking how he looks in his car window reflection before a mob meeting. Everything about this messy, complex character feels intricately planned, and exquisitely realized by Farrell.

The Penguin's New Characters Offer Mostly Very Strong Support

The penguin avoids a big spin-off issue.

The other danger with spin-offs is that they have to leave behind the main cast of the original by design. There is no Batman here, apart from a brief mention during the opening news reel that establishes how broken Gotham is. That's important, because it also gives Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight something of an alibi for not showing up as the criminal underworld jockies for position. Just about, anyway: there's enough going on in episode 1 that he's not much of a miss.

Into the vacuum left by Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis come the prominent figures of Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguillar, Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, and Michael Kelly as Falcone underboss Johnny Vitti. They're the most significant new figures, alongside Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), Deirdre O'Connell (Francis Cobb), Eve Karlo (Carmen Ejogo), and Milos Grapa ( Band of Brothers alum James Madio). Their impact varies, with some straying into the territory of under-nourished mob caricatures (the upstart heir Alberto and the Sopranos -lite Madio in particular), but Milioti and Feliz stand out.

The only other complaint with the cast, and the slightest issue with Farrell's performance too, is the accent work. At times, they can get a little cartoonish, and it's the only time the magic really slips. For Farrell, it's just about covered by the fact that Oz is projecting - peforming to fit in - but O'Connell's Francis Cobb (his mother) exaggerates a little too much.

Sofia Falcone & Victor Aguillar Promise Big Things

Close-up of Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, sporting a defiant gaze in The Penguin official teaser

Sofia arrives not quite fully formed, with the burden of her past (and an extended stint in Arkham Hospital for the Hangman Murders), and a barely concealed animalism that's hard to pin down at this stage. She offers an immediate and urgent threat to Oz's plans for criminal conquest , not least because of her name, but also because of her suspicions of him. Milioti is excellent, suggesting depth to the character that will come to be revealed.

Feliz arrives with all sorts of background warning alarms about Scrappy Doo syndrome, given he's presented as Oz's sidekick. But impressively, The Penguin handles his introduction very well by nailing his narrative function to the mast. He is a means for Oz to reveal his philosophy for success as well as being a stand-in for the audience. As he is drawn into Oz's world, so are we, irresistibly, and Feliz's subtle performance sells that well. His stutter - a vulnerability that ingratiates Oz - also feels very authentic.

The World-Building Of Gotham Is The Best In Decades

Wide shot of the Penguin contemplating a sunset in Gotham City through a large circular window in The Penguin official teaser

Say what you will about Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight movies, but they didn't do particularly well by Gotham. The most famous city in DC lore was a blank canvas behind Christian Bale's Batman, lacking the character of Burton's more grandiose architectural vision. The Penguin 's version lacks the gothic and baroque excess of Burton and Schumacher's design , but it is built to feel claustrophobic.

We're given a look at both sides of Gotham: the luxury of the rich communities, which Oz aspires to make his own, and the devastation of the poor communities that were most affected by Riddler's bombs in The Batman . The choice to set those sides in conflict, while painting everything in moody, muddy colors (which can get a little distracting) is a richly rewarding reintroduction to Gotham. There's an understated otherworldliness about how it's shown that redoubles all confidence in not only Matt Reeves' Batman universe, but in the creative team chosen to expand it.

The Penguin

Created by Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin is a crime-drama spin-off television series of 2022's film The Batman. Set shortly after the events of The Batman, Oz Cobb, A.K.A. the Penguin, begins his rise in the underworld of Gotham City as he contends with the daughter of his late boss, Carmine Falcone, for control of the crime family's empire.

  • The world-building of Gotham is subtly brilliant.
  • Colin Farrell's performance is once more shockingly good.
  • Cristin Milioti is an excellent new addition to this world.
  • The story already feels gripping.
  • Some characters feel like set dressing.
  • Some of the accent work is distracting at times.

The Big Picture

  • Collider's Perri Nemiroff sits down with writer-director Rachel House at TIFF 2024 for The Mountain , her feature directorial debut.
  • The Mountain is an adventure film that explores friendship and Māori culture as Sam, a young girl with cancer, sets out to make it to the top of Taranaki.
  • In this interview, House discusses casting her three leads, celebrating Māori culture, and how her previous experience supported her directorial debut.

Rachel House is a staple of New Zealand cinema. After debuting in the internationally acclaimed Whale Rider , House appeared in works by Oscar-winners Jane Campion and (almost every single flick by) Taika Waititi . Her acting career continues to blossom with memorable voice roles in Disney's Moana and Pixar's Soul , as well as with her appearances in mega-blockbuster films like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire . Now, House is celebrating the North American premiere of her debut feature as a director, The Mountain , at this year's Toronto International Film Festival .

Co-written by House and Tom Furniss, The Mountain tells the story of Sam played by Elizabeth Atkinson , a young girl raised outside of her Māori culture. As Sam bravely battles cancer, she makes it her mission to connect with her mountain, Taranaki Maunga, which she believes is the key to her cure, as well as a way to connect with her true identity. On her adventure, Sam befriends Mallory ( Reuben Francis ) and runaway Bronco ( Terence Daniel ) as they make their way together on a spiritual adventure off the beaten path.

In 2020, House was a guest on Collider Ladies Night with Perri Nemiroff , where she shared the plot for The Mountain and news that she was on the search for her leads. Almost four years later, the co-writer and director stopped by Collider's interview studio at the Cinema Center at MARBL to celebrate her directorial debut and share her enthusiasm for Atkinson, Francis, and Daniel's talent and the authenticity they brought to their roles. House also talks about her previous experience with directing theater, working as an acting coach, and how that enabled her to empower her cast on set. She also highlights the importance of spotlighting Māori culture in her work. You can watch the full interview from TIFF in the video above or read the conversation in transcript form below.

'The Mountain' Explores The Spirit of Friendship and a Deeper Understanding of Nature

The script was a "brilliant opportunity" to share the first nation peoples' culture..

PERRI NEMIROFF: The joy it brings me that we were talking about you wanting to make the movie — I don't even think you had the green light yet — on Ladies Night four or five years ago , and now here you are with an excellent finished film. It's just something else!

RACHEL HOUSE: I know. It's been a journey, and I feel like people have tried to push me into the role of a director of a feature film, and I just wasn't quite ready. Also, this was an opportunity to get involved in the script, as well, which I think I'm quite big on.

To catch our audience up, would you mind giving a brief synopsis?

HOUSE: The Mountain is about three young children who go to climb a mountain to help one of their friends, Sam, to cure herself from a terrible affliction — she has cancer. And on the way, they discover the spirit of friendship, and they also really get a deeper understanding of nature itself.

Many questions about this being your first feature as a director. Why particularly this material? What was it about it that made you say to yourself, “This is how I want to introduce myself as a director to this industry?”

HOUSE: Initially, the script was about three little boys. They wanted to conquer a mountain, and the mountain didn't have a name, and so, as an Indigenous woman reading that script, I didn't quite know where we were. I didn't know that it was set in our country, and I thought, “What a brilliant opportunity.” Thank you so much, Tom Furniss, who did a brilliant script and worked very, very hard for many years on his script, The Mountain . It was a wonderful opportunity to try and explain and share with the world how First Nations people see their mountains.

The other thing was something I wanted to follow up on that I was reading about; this script was brought to you to direct. Were you surprised when that happened, or did people know that you were seeking projects to direct?

HOUSE: I was fortunate enough that I had people bringing me projects, really for the last decade, but none of the scripts really sang to me or resonated with me personally. This particular script did because of those reasons, that I thought, “What a brilliant opportunity to share with the world how we see our mountains and how special they are to us.”

Rachel House Knows a Directing Secret for A+ Performances

Rachel House at TIFF 2024 for The Mountain

So you've had the itch to direct film for all that time and only now first pushed go?

HOUSE: Well, I directed theater for a really long time, and so I knew I really loved directing. I love working with actors, love working out story, but yeah, I knew that if I wanted to make a feature, it had to be something really special, and maybe it was something that I wrote myself. That never happened — spent too long procrastinating. And so when this came along, I thought, “Yeah, this is it. This is the way.”

Between theater directing and all the other experience you've had in this industry, what is a skill you gained that you found coming in handy when directing your first feature film, but then also, can you tell me about a learning curve, something about directing that you didn't expect and you had to adjust to?

HOUSE: So I think it was really all the acting coaching that I've done working with young, amazing kids that really came in handy for this film. I think that's why I felt confident, I suppose, because I knew how to work with kids, and I really enjoy it. So, that was something that I felt really good about. I think what was so interesting in terms of directing adult actors is that you really have to just let them go for it and just empower them to bring what they want to bring and only step in if they need help, as opposed to micromanaging a performance in any way. I feel like there are directors out there who kind of want to start changing you before you've even stepped on set. I noticed that when I work with directors who just empower you to bring what you can bring to the role yourself, that's often when the best work happens. Working on this feature film was definitely a way for me to experiment with that with the adult actors. And they all do. They bought their own game on day one.

Edward Burns was just in here talking about his new movie, and he explained it the same way. He mentioned how Steven Spielberg set the bar for him in terms of letting actors feel it out for themselves before giving notes, just so you don't box someone in or put any unnecessary pressure on someone before they've even had a chance to explore the material.

HOUSE: Absolutely. That's definitely when I've thrived as an actor, and when I've completely crumbled as an actor is when I've been micromanaged.

'The Mountain' Debuts an Exceptional Young Cast

Reuben Francis, Elizabeth Atkinson, and Terence Daniel in the woods with camping gear

I did want to go back to your young cast. The three of them are exceptional. Can you tell me something about each of them that signaled to you, they weren't just good fits for their particular roles, but they also had what it takes to headline a feature film as a young actor?

HOUSE: I should start with Terence Daniel because his audition tape was exceptional. He put it together himself; I thought it must have been done by his mom. But in there was sort of a montage of all of his skills, so it had him riding his bike, it had him playing rugby, kind of mid-flying across the field. He is in doing Kapa Haka, doing the Haka. He came in, and he basically was Bronco as soon as he stepped in the door. He was just very at ease in himself as a human being, but also in our culture, in Māori culture, which is definitely something that Bronco needs to have. He also had a very clear understanding of grief, and also the importance of nature.

He is phenomenal in that role. Every single time you open me up to a new layer of that character, all I kept thinking was, “I need to spend more and more time with him.”

HOUSE: Right?

I appreciated that.

HOUSE: And that's Terence. That's him. What you're seeing is actually Terence.

coming-of-age-films

From 'The 400 Blows' to 'Lady Bird': 9 Essential Coming-of-Age Films for a Heavy Dose of Nostalgia

These films all expertly explore the exquisite angst that is growing up.

How about your other two stars now?

HOUSE: Beautiful Reuben [Francis]. He went through a kind of ordeal just before he came in to audition where he was in the UK at school, he had friends, and then when COVID struck, him and his family moved back to New Zealand. They were from New Zealand. And so he came into the lockdown into his new life. He hadn't made any friends, and so he was feeling very much like an outsider. So when he came to audition, that was kind of where he was at in his life. He just started school, and he was just struggling a little bit to get into the swing of a new school and new friends. So, I sort of feel like he brought that beautiful vulnerability to his character straight away, as well.

And then, of course, our beautiful Elizabeth [Atkinson]. She was the hardest to find. We went through a lot of young actors to find her, and she came in with this absolute fierceness and determination, which I thought was essential that Sam had, as well.

It leaps off the screen in her work. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this makrs feature debuts for …

HOUSE: All three of them.

How 'The Mountain' Guides Audiences Through Māori Culture

Rachel House at TIFF 2024 for The Mountain

We were talking about this a little before and I said I wanted to bring it up. It's a really big question that might not have a simple answer, but it's something I really appreciated about your film. What is the key to respecting such a specific experience and cultural elements, but while making it feel like it's welcoming newcomers in? I thought you struck a beautiful balance with that.

HOUSE: When I reworked the script, I had to rewrite Bronco in particular because I thought Bronco was our key for everybody who didn't know a lot about Māori culture . It was imperative that he be our guide through our culture, so that was a complete rewrite. I think he does it really well, that character. I think that character kind of brings us in really well. Both those characters, the other two, struggle with that kind of knowledge themselves, so it really meant that we had to make Bronco our access point as much as possible.

But for us behind the scenes, we got in contact with these eight tribes that live around the mountain. I'm connected to two of them, which is really great. I wouldn't have made that mountain Taranaki unless I was personally connected to them. Me and Desray Armstrong and Carthew Neal did a lot of work with the Iwi before we even started filming. It was a long process, but one that couldn't be rushed.

Director Rachel House Started Each Shooting Day With A Prayer

"to uplift and uphold and respect each other in all of our jobs.".

Rachel House at TIFF 2024 for The Mountain

I have to wrap with you and I wanted to make sure to end on this particular question. For about the last year, it's the final question of Collider Ladies Night, so I didn't get to pose it to you in 2020. In this industry, we give each other awards and I think that's super cool. But, I find that few filmmakers say "good job" to themselves nearly enough, and making your feature directorial debut is one heck of an accomplishment. I want you to tell me something specific you did making The Mountain that you know you'll be able to look back on and say, “I am so proud of what I did in there.”

HOUSE: I think it was just the way every day we had a prayer. We started the day with a prayer, and we really infused our process with what we call Manaakitanga , which is to uplift and uphold and respect each other in all of our jobs. I think we had a beautiful family, and I think it was all of us who created that, but I'm glad that I was a leader in that process.

Your film made me so happy!

HOUSE: I’m so happy! I will never get sick of people saying that they like my film.

I assume the itch to direct feature films is still there, and perhaps growing?

HOUSE: Oh, yeah! Although maybe something in a different genre. A thriller. Horror.
