1. Content check

Before investing too much time and energy into rehearsing your speech say it through in front of a few trusted friends or colleagues. It is much, much easier to change text prior to practicing it than after you've begun working with it. Ask them to listen:

to make sure you've included everyone you should, in the right order and thanked them for the right things.

Edit as needed, and then have your test audience listen again.

Introduction.

Congratulations! You’ve won an award. Maybe you’ve been selected for the prestigious National Speakers Association’s Speaker Hall of Fame . Maybe you’ve been named volunteer of the year for your local service club. Whatever you’ve won, now you may be wondering: how do I give an award acceptance speech? what kind of a speech am I supposed to give? Where can I find award acceptance speech examples ? How do I make sure my speech is memorable in a good way?

Maybe you’ve never given a speech before, and after toiling for years far from the spotlight, being put on stage is a nerve-wracking prospect for you. One of the best ways to minimize those nerves is to do your homework beforehand so you know exactly where you’re going with your talk, and reading this article is a great start! Even if you’re a seasoned speaker, the structure and format of an award acceptance speech may not be what you are used to. To master the shortened format and time limits you may have, you’ll need to structure your speech in a more specialized way. For more on how to do so, read on.

Determine the goal of your speech

First of all, what is the goal of your acceptance speech? The starting point for most, if not all, acceptance speeches, should be a humble “thank you” for whatever they have received. It may also be appropriate to highlight particular experiences or individuals who helped you to get where you are. But this can be overdone; fake modesty and a long list of thank-yous to people the audience doesn’t know can cause your audience to tune out just as much as a braggy or even vindictive diatribe. How do you strike the balance?

One way to start could be watching others’ acceptance speeches, and ideally not just speeches from the Academy Awards. Award acceptance speech examples can be found on Youtube, Vimeo, and other video-sharing sites. Learn from others but don’t mimic – You’ve probably watched a lot of speakers before haven’t you? You know the things they do that work. It’s easy to want to just duplicate what you saw them do since you know it works. But don’t do that. Learn from why it worked and how you can incorporate a similar (but not copied) methodology into your own talks.

Structuring your speech

Another tip: figure out from the event organizer what the time restrictions are for your talk. You don’t want to plan a 20-minute overture when the event organizers expect you to speak for just a minute or two! This will also set the tone for your talk.

Remember that your speech is supposed to be shorter than your typical speech. You shouldn’t have that much to write out. Once you’ve determined a few people you’d like to thank, maybe a story you’d like to tell, and determined the overall goal or vibe of your talk, you should start structuring your speech.

Perhaps you could begin by breaking down your speech into a few sections. For example, you could structure the speech as follows: Introduction, thanking a few specific people, telling a story or an anecdote, and conclusion. This should all take no more than 3-5 minutes. And it will fly by .

Consider telling stories

Want to tell a story in your acceptance speech? It’s a good idea. Humans relate to stories. We connect to stories. Funny stories. Sad stories. Inspirational stories. We love stories. So tell them. Lots of them. Stories will keep your audience engaged and are also easier for you to memorize.

There’s nothing wrong with telling a 3rd person story or using some case study or example. But especially for an award you’re receiving, telling a story that you lived and experienced generally makes the story better for you and the audience. For the audience, they can oftentimes find themselves in your story. For you as the speaker, it’s much easier (and more powerful) to tell a story that you lived versus one you read in a book.

What kind of story to tell

In an award acceptance speech, any such story should be short and sweet. One way to keep an eye on the length is to try timing yourself telling the story out loud. As Harriet Turk discusses in our podcast on creating your talk , “If you practice out loud, you learn a whole lot more about what the story hits on and what parts need to be told.” Turk goes on to say that sometimes we find that we try to tell a story the way we wrote it, but authoring a story is much different than presenting a story. A story that reads well in a book may not work as well on stage.

Some examples of stories or anecdotes that you could do well to include would be about a setback you overcame in your role, or how someone helped you in a particularly meaningful way. If that person who helped you is one of those you want to thank, it would serve as an incredibly powerful testament to their character to include such a story. Of course, if something about that story is sensitive, it would be prudent to notify them in advance that you plan to tell that story. Even if not, it could be polite to give them a heads-up, particularly if they will be in the audience for your acceptance speech.

Using humor: advantages and pitfalls

You might wonder whether or not humor is appropriate in an award acceptance speech. Generally, humor is not a bad thing to include if you want to liven up your talk. However, keep in mind that you are being spotlighted as an individual accomplishing something in an award acceptance speech, and harsh joking about other people, in particular, may reflect poorly on your deserving the award. Negative jokes about the organizer, your collaborators, or others in the audience are no-nos.

On that point, as we cover in our 100 speaking tips article, you don’t need to be crude or inappropriate just for a laugh. It’s not worth it. If you deliver a killer keynote and are flawless throughout, but you make one inappropriate remark, nobody will remember anything else you said. There’s nothing wrong with using humor or making a strong point on something, but don’t do it at the expense of crossing the line and turning people off.

On the other hand, a dash of humor, such as light self-deprecation, can be perfectly good at keeping your speech from sounding sanctimonious or stuffy. When you tell a joke or deliver a punchline, give the audience time to laugh. Sometimes speakers like to rush to the next point, but don’t do that. You need to give the audience a chance to respond to what you just said (in this case to laugh), but also if you rush on to the next thought while the room is still laughing, nobody will hear what you’re saying.

Practice makes perfect

You’re not going to have a Powerpoint. You’re probably not going to have any visual aids. So how are you going to stay focused and find cues for your award acceptance speech?

Consider writing your speech out and timing yourself to ensure you don’t go way over any time allotments you might have. And if you don’t have time limits, consider your audience – they will almost certainly tune out after 15+ minutes of seemingly-endless acknowledgments…

Remember: Professional speakers don’t just make stuff up. They don’t write a few thoughts on a notecard and then shoot from the hip for an entire presentation. They take the time to write and carefully craft their material.

As Harriet Turk discusses in our podcast on creating your talk , bullet points can be one way to succinctly outline a talk in a way that you can rely on, even when you’re on stage and nervous. “Bullets are easy because they trigger what it is that you’re really wanting to do,” she said, “Whereas if you write it out and then you memorize it, you could have stage fright, or you’ve practiced it so much that you get to a point that you’re nervous and you forget.”

Although you shouldn’t just be reading from a page the whole time, writing out specific names of people you want to thank can help keep you from forgetting anybody.

When you’re on stage

So you’ve written, practiced, and are headed to your acceptance speech venue to give your killer talk. What should you remember when you’re standing on the stage?

As we outline in our 100 speaking tips piece, remember that on stage, you can be an amplified version of yourself. The bigger the venue, the bigger you need to be on stage. The way you would communicate to a group of 10 people is very different than how you would need to communicate to a room of 10,000. Both should be an authentic version of you, but simply amplified to the setting. The bottom line is don’t try to be something you’re not on stage. Be you.

Keep it slow and steady. When you are talking really fast, it becomes difficult for the audience to follow. It’s hard to keep up and process. Plus the faster you talk, the harder it is to understand what you’re saying. So slow down and enunciate. Give the audience the chance to keep up with where you’re going.

Don’t be afraid of the silence. Silence, to a speaker, can feel deafening but it can be powerful. Silence shows confidence that you’re in control of the talk and the room and you’re continuing to guide them towards a common purpose. When you make a strong point, don’t rush to the next line. Stop and let it hang there. The silence is your friend.

Being honest, the journey towards the project accomplishment and subsequently towards this award was not easy; in fact it was very long. Right from the moment when the idea was conceived to the outline of the project which was initiated later on and until today, a lot of work has been done. Transforming the idea to the real output required a good deal of efforts and various challenges came in the way. I was not alone though, I had my colleagues who walked along with me and my managers and supervisors who provided unconditional support to me. Above all, I am thankful to the Board members, CEO and the management who showed so much of trust and faith in me, which was the constant energy boost for me.

Together, we overcame every problem and challenges which have now become the milestones for us. The project was also very close to my heart because it’s about innovating means and methods to save energy and water and ultimately support sustainability. I am very glad to announce that we did it!

Initially, I assumed, it was really difficult to accomplish the desired result within the time that we had stipulated to ourselves. But, I would say, it was all team work and the never-ending belief in our hard work and honest objective. I would like to utilise this platform to express my deep gratefulness to the members of the project who worked relentlessly on this project for one year. Needless to say, every participant of the project has contributed equally to the project.

Being the Project Manager, I am greatly honoured to say that the team had converted into a family; our project being our child. I still remember the brainstorming sessions and the candid and ferocious discussions, sometimes at odd hours which ultimately resulted into the fruitful decisions. I am sure all my colleagues and team members do remember the time spent in the office after the working hours as and when an inspiration came in. Despite all the odds, we were certain about one thing that we were going to achieve success. The most memorable part of this project was to convince the higher management to introduce changes in manufacturing processes and methods. Though it was challenging, but I am glad that the management understood the essence of the proposal and thus our project was born.

The entire journey was a learning experience for me and with the success of this project; I am more energised and charged up to take up new and challenging projects which would work in the benefit of my organisation and the environment.

Being awarded with the best employer award means a lot for me because it means our employees love our organization and they are happy with us. Every year, we internally conduct a bi-annual employee survey to determine what we are lacking at and what we are good at. The employees are only asked to fill the survey without mentioning their name or department. We maintain this fairness so that we can actually work upon the weaknesses. I especially thank all the employees who had been very honest with the survey in sharing their feelings with us, because it motivated us to do better for them and thus, we are here today receiving this award.

Since last 5 years, our company has not only worked upon enhancing the product and services we offer, but the management and HR have also worked upon making the work culture better for our internal employees too. Our company works upon 5 basic philosophies: Stability, Compensation, Respect, Health Benefits and Work-Life Balance for the employees.

I would like to take some moment today to especially thank the Human Resource Department and the Management who have worked with much dedication and formulated policies that not just work for the benefit of the customers, but also helps employees maintaining their work-life balance and thus meeting the company’s common objective.

The last 5 years have been a great journey for us and we have also seen our due share of ups and downs in the company. Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan added another accolade to his illustrious career at the 77th Locarno Film Festival , where he was presented with a career achievement honor on Saturday. The superstar, known for his wit as much as his on-screen performances, delivered an acceptance speech that blended heartfelt reflections on cinema with his trademark humor.

Addressing the packed 8,000-strong crowd in Locarno’s Piazza Grande, Khan began by acknowledging the warm reception he received. “Thank you all for welcoming me with such wide arms – wider than the ones I do on screen,” he quipped, referencing his famous open-armed pose.

Khan’s speech took a more serious turn as he delved into his thoughts on cinema and creativity. “I truly believe cinema has been the most profound and influential artistic medium of our age,” he said. “I’ve had the privilege of being part of this for many years, and this journey has taught me a few lessons.”

The actor emphasized the universal nature of art and filmmaking, stating, “Art is the act of affirming life above all. It goes beyond every man-made boundary into a space of liberation. It need not be political. It need not be polemical. It need not sermonize. It need not intellectualize. It need not moralize.” He continued, “Art and cinema only need to say what it feels from the heart, to express its own truth. And that, to me, is the biggest creativity, honestly.”

Khan also spoke about the intrinsic connection between creativity and emotion. “There is no creativity without love, which is a language which transcends all languages and is comprehended by everyone around the world,” he said. “So creativity, love, and giving joy to me, is one and the same thing.”

The actor’s humorous side emerged again when he struggled to pronounce the name of his award – the Pardo alla Carriera Ascona-Locarno Tourism. “This award here, which, for the life of me, I’ve been trying… I can’t pronounce,” he joked, before playfully renaming it “the Leopard award for being the most awesome in the world, in the history of humility and kindness and goodness.”

Khan’s presence at the festival underscored Locarno’s commitment to celebrating popular cinema alongside arthouse fare. Festival director Giona A. Nazzaro explained the decision to honor Khan: “The reason why we wanted to award Shah Rukh Khan is because he’s a great artist. He’s been carrying the dreams and the hopes of so many people through his wonderful work ethic, discipline. He made all the dreams of many, many, many of us come true.”

As he concluded his speech, Khan promised to continue pushing his boundaries as an actor. “With the promise that awards like this encourage me to keep on trying to embody all the facets of life, to embody all the emotions, and to try to give that one more take, one more shot, one more emotion, and hopefully a little bit of love, so that all of you feel a little joyful,” he said.

As the crowd cheered, Khan made one last attempt at pronouncing the award’s name, before laughing and saying, “Can you keep a shorter name? Just like, ‘arrivederci.'”

Remarks as Prepared for John Podesta at Third Way on Inflation Reduction Act’s Two-Year Anniversary

Thanks so much, Josh, and thanks to Third Way for hosting today’s event and for your years of advocacy for a clean energy future. It’s great to be here with all of you.

We’re gathering during a summer that’s been defined by the climate crisis.

July 21 st was the hottest day ever recorded by humans.

That title lasted for exactly one day. July 22 nd was even hotter.

The consequences of a rapidly warming planet aren’t just about the loss of faraway places like the Great Barrier Reef or the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica.

It’s about the daily impact on people’s lives…from Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm Debby that have already pummeled the Gulf and East Coasts this summer…to the extreme heat affecting workers in the Southwest…to the wildfires that are raging in California.

To combat this existential threat, President Biden and Vice President Harris set a bold vision to build a clean energy economy by creating good-paying, union jobs and spreading opportunity to every corner of America.

And two years ago, they took the biggest step yet to turn that vision into reality by passing and signing the Inflation Reduction Act.

That law makes the largest investment in climate and clean energy in not only the history of America…but the history of the world.

It tackles climate pollution in every economic sector—power, transportation, buildings, industry, agriculture and forestry.

And it does all this by investing in workers, communities, and families.

The IRA invests in workers by catalyzing a clean energy boom that’s creating good-paying, union jobs all across America.

The law does this with a government-enabled, but private sector-led approach…providing ten-plus years of certainty through expanded and enhanced clean energy tax credits…signaling to businesses that they can think big and make long-term decisions.

Treasury guidance is now available on 21 out of 24 tax credit provisions.

That’s given the private sector the certainty it needed to announce more than $415 billion in new clean energy investments since President Biden and Vice President Harris took office.

$265 billion of that investment has been announced since the IRA passed…creating more than 300,000 jobs.

President Biden and Vice President Harris are working to make sure those are good-paying jobs you can support a family on. 

 Jobs that offer a free and fair chance to join a union and the right to organize and bargain collectively. 

The IRA effectively makes strong labor standards an offer the private sector can’t refuse by providing five times the value of tax credits when developers pay prevailing wages and hire registered apprentices.

In addition to investing in workers, the IRA is aiming to build more clean energy—in the right places — by investing in underserved communities.

Woven into the fabric of the law’s tax credits are game-changing incentives for companies to invest in low-income communities and energy communities. And they are working.

According to Treasury analysis, since the IRA passed, 75% of clean energy investments have been in counties with lower than median household incomes.

Clean energy investments in traditional energy communities have doubled in the past two years.

And federal dollars are directly flowing into communities through the grant side of the law.

$118 billion of the grants, loans, and rebates in the law are considered covered programs under President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, which aims to ensure 40% of the benefits of specific federal programs flow to disadvantaged communities.

Federal agencies have already awarded nearly two-thirds of all available grant, loan, and rebate funding.

And of the grant dollars that can be spent this year, 84 percent have been awarded or are in a pending Notice of Funding Opportunity.

Some big examples are EPA’s $27 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which made awards this spring…and $4.3 billion in Climate Pollution Reduction Grants they announced last month.

In March, DOE announced awards across 20 states through the Industrial Demonstrations Program—the largest investment in clean manufacturing in U.S. history.

And HUD has now awarded 70% of its IRA funds through the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program…which translates to more than 20,000 cost-saving home energy upgrades for seniors and low-income families.

That brings me to the third category of people benefitting from the IRA: American families.

Through the law’s consumer programs, families are already saving money on solar panels, EVs, heat pumps, and more…helping them save hundreds or even thousands every year on energy.

Since January 2024, more than 250,000 Americans have claimed the IRA’s EV tax credits, saving about $1.5 billion total. Nearly all of these buyers claimed the incentive at the point of sale.

Families in New York and, as of last week, Wisconsin can get rebates off electric appliances and energy efficiency improvements at home…and more states will launch their programs later this summer and fall.

Consumers are also benefitting from tax credits that offer up to 30% off heat pumps, insulation, rooftop solar, and other home energy technologies.

Last week, the Treasury Department and the IRS released the first public data on the IRA’s consumer clean energy tax incentives.

The new analysis shows that in 2023, more than 3.4 million American families benefitted from $8.4 billion in tax credits to lower the costs of clean energy and energy efficiency upgrades to their homes.

That’s millions of Americans that are now saving money every month on their energy bills…on top of the millions of Americans whose communities are benefitting from IRA grant dollars or seeing new clean energy projects bringing good-paying jobs and opportunity to their hometowns.

Have we solved every challenge facing the clean energy economy? Of course not .

But the bottom line is this: Two years in, the largest climate investment in history is working.

So, understandably, people are asking if that investment can really stick regardless of who is in power here in Washington.

My answer to the question of whether the Inflation Reduction Act has staying power is yes.

No Republicans voted for the IRA—but they know their constituents are receiving the benefits.

According to Climate Power, 58 percent of the new clean energy jobs created since the IRA passed are located in Congressional districts represented by Republicans.

Those jobs come from over 300 new clean energy projects totaling $282 billion in investment.

Some Republicans—especially governors—know that all this activity is a good thing.

Take Governor Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma. Today, he’s celebrating the end of construction in his state for the largest direct air capture facility in America.

Last week, Governor Gianforte of Montana applauded a $700 million investment from the Department of Energy—funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law—for the North Plains Connector transmission project that will link three regional grids and boost clean power capacity.

Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina has welcomed clean energy investments for many years…from the EV supply chain…to the Columbia solar inverter facility by Enphase and Flex that President Biden and I visited last summer.

And last week, 18 House Republicans wrote a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson urging him not to repeal the IRA’s energy tax credits.

The letter says, “Prematurely repealing energy tax credits, particularly those which were used to justify investments that already broke ground, would undermine private investments and stop development that is already ongoing. A full repeal would create a worst-case scenario where we would have spent billions of taxpayer dollars and received next to nothing in return.”

These guys get it.

But there are others who are trying to claw back jobs, raise costs, and take away opportunity—and hoping the American people won’t notice.

In the past two years, House Republicans have attempted to repeal all or parts of the Inflation Reduction Act 42 times.

Now, they’re at it again in the latest round of federal appropriations bills for the next fiscal year.

House Republicans pay lip service to clean air and clean water.

But they’re proposing the lowest funding level for the EPA in over 25 years…

Attempting to block EPA standards and programs to reduce pollution, from particulate matter to methane…

And trying to slash funding for our national parks and the Arctic…clean energy on our public lands…and meeting our commitments to Tribal nations.

House Republicans say they care about jobs.

But they’re trying to prevent funds from being used for the American Climate Corps…which is already supporting 9,000 young people serving their communities in climate and environmental jobs.

House Republicans say they want to speed up permitting for infrastructure and private sector projects.

But they’re trying to prevent the Council on Environmental Quality from enforcing its updated NEPA rule…which actually implements the permitting efficiencies Congress directed them to make.

House Republicans say we should be tough on China.

But they want to slash DOE funding that supports clean energy demonstration projects and the Loan Programs Office…a key program that boosts America’s competitiveness and gives us a leading edge over China.

House Republicans say that prices are too high.

But they’re proposing to raise costs by preventing DOE from enforcing energy efficiency standards for home appliances, which are projected to save families nearly $73 billion on their utility bills over the next 30 years…

And trying to divert money away from weatherization, which would prevent more than 55,000 low-income households from receiving assistance to reduce their energy costs.

On top of all that, House Republicans have added riders to these appropriations bills that attempt to block the implementation of nearly every executive action on climate and clean energy that President Biden has taken.

If that’s not climate denial, I don’t know what is.

These attempts to undo our climate and environmental progress—including many of our bedrock environmental laws—will only take our country backward.

They will hurt our economy and our communities.

They will undermine the good work the Inflation Reduction Act is doing to build a clean energy economy across America.

And they will send our efforts to rebuild clean energy manufacturing back overseas.

It’s why the White House issued veto threats last month for four House appropriations bills.

President Biden and Vice President Harris will continue to fight these bad-faith attempts to roll back the clock on our growing clean energy economy and undermine the fight against climate change.

But they need your help.

We need the private companies that are claiming IRA tax credits to tout the jobs you’re creating…the investments you’re making…the facilities you’re opening.

Don’t take it for granted that elected officials or the public know about the work you’re doing.

We need families that have saved money on clean energy to tell their friends and neighbors how easy it is to access the IRA’s consumer tax credits. You can visit energystar.gov/homesavings to learn more.

And we need elected officials from red and blue states alike to recognize the opportunity the law is bringing to their communities—and to continue to embrace it.

We’re talking about two very different visions of the future.

One takes us forward…giving families more breathing room and bringing jobs and opportunity to every corner of America.

The other takes us backward…raising costs…killing jobs…and stifling opportunity.

It’s up to every single one of us to move our collective work forward…for the benefit of workers, communities, families, and our planet.

A novel candidate neuromarker of central motor dysfunction in childhood apraxia of speech

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is conceived as an impairment of the central motor system s ability to program multiple speech movements, resulting in inaccurate transitions between and relative timing across speech sounds. However, the extant neuroimaging evidence base is scant and inconclusive and the neurophysiological origins of these motor planning problems remain highly underspecified. In the first magnetoencephalography study of this disorder, we measured brain activity from typically developing children (N = 19) and children with CAS (N=7) during performance of a speech task designed to interrogate function of the speech areas of primary sensorimotor cortex. Relative to their typically developing peers, our sample of CAS children showed abnormal speech-related responses within the mu-band motor rhythm, and beamformer source reconstruction analyses specify a brain origin of this speech rhythm in the left cerebral hemisphere, within or near pre-Rolandic motor areas crucial for the planning and control of speech and oromotor movements. These results provide a new and specific candidate mechanism for the core praxic features of CAS point to a novel and robust neurophysiological marker of typical and atypical expressive speech development; and support an emerging neuroscientific consensus which assigns a central role for programming and coordination of speech movements to the motor cortices of the precentral gyrus.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Update (August 2024)

Location of "i have a dream" speech in washington, d.c..

August is the month during which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech to a crowd of 250,000 people (August 28, 1963.)

Outreach and Recruitment

From August 4-6, because of a collaboration between the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Medicine (ODEIM) and the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, a YSM and Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) delegation of 10 faculty members showcased graduate medical education and faculty opportunities at the National Medical Association (NMA) national conference in New York City. The NMA is a predominately Black or African American physician organization founded in 1895 when Black physicians could not join the American Medical Association. We showcased over 70 open faculty positions across several clinical departments at Yale—a big thank you to Cat Gomez-Stafford, who seamlessly organized our participation.

Additionally, I want to thank our faculty members who showed up to represent Yale, including Emmanuel Akintoye, MD, MPH ; Vivian Asare, MD ; Aba Black, MD, MHS; Jacquelyne Gaddy, MD, MSc; MSCR ; Darin Latimore, MD ; Ruby Lekwauwa, MD ; Faye Rogers, MD ; Sangini Sheth, MD, MPH, FACOG ; and Kwame Tuffuor, MD, MBA .

I am happy to share that for the academic year 2024 to 2025, the Department of Medicine has awarded five visiting student elective scholarships to final-year medical students from Wayne State University, Oklahoma State University, Brown University, Rowan University, and Edward Via College.

Plans are underway for the third annual YSM and YNHH Historically Black Colleges and Universities HBCU Medical School virtual recruitment fair on September 11, 2024. Talking about outreach, we also plan to send a 22-person YSM and YNHH delegation to the Latino Medical Student Association from September 20 - 22, 2024.

The Minority House Staff Organization (MHO) members have been invited to join the Minority Organization for Retention and Expansion (MORE) Annual Welcome Event on September 15, 2024.

On July 22, ODEIM shared the executive summary of the Department of Medicine inclusion climate survey, its action plan, strategies, and next steps to make the Department of Medicine more inclusive and equitable in response to the report’s findings. You can access both via the links below.

The action plans represent a collaboration with all DEI vice chiefs across the sections.
